Kicking things off with all the pretty from Gina Rodriguez and Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac. Plus Gina Rodriguez gives an all important beard smell related tweet.
A quick change from Taraji P. Henson makes a whole lot of sense because dancing with a train that long is just impractical. Serayah opts for one of the bold color looks that was on trend this weekend.

Carly Chaikin’s AFI luncheon dress is one of our ultimate faves from the sea of recent outfits we have discussed and we also highly approve of her selfie subject from this event.
Mindy Kaling has worn a lot of amazing things and her Instagram acts as an outfit archive, but I can definitely see why she is calling this one of her favorites. All the heart eye emojis.
Just wondering how many synthetic beauties there are among this collection of Keri Russell Americans costumes and my eyes are instantly drawn to the green (p)leather number.
TV themed issues of fashion magazines brings two of my big loves together (I am still mourning the end of the Nylon’s annual TV celebration even though I’m now way older than the target demo) and Elledoes one of the best. It has not been without a few issues in the past including the 2014 multi-cover selection that went in a different (albeit very beautiful) direction for Mindy Kaling as opposed to the other four (white) actresses. Last year saw them ditch this format opting to showcase only Lena Dunham, but thankfully for the 2016 issue they have returned to my preferred several recipients layout. And they have picked their cover stars well.
It is also interesting to note that while streaming platforms are definitely making their mark in a big way, when it comes to the shows these women represent network has three out of the five and cable has the other two.
Taraji P. Henson was on our favorite magazine cover of 2015 and this is another powerful image that doesn’t go down the obvious ‘dress as a version of Cookie’ route. Fearless, sexy and making me want to invest in red leather.
All of the covers demand the viewer returns the strong gaze of the woman featured and Quantico’s Priyanka Chopra is serving up so much face. Tyra would be proud.
More hair touching and Julia Louis-Dreyfus might have had her ‘last fuckable day’ in this Amy Schumer sketch, but this is proving she is anything but (even if Hollywood thinks Maggie Gyllenhaal at 37 is too old to play the love interest of a 55 year old).
In fact Olivia Wilde at the age of 31 is the youngest of the cover stars proving that TV is the place to find interesting roles for woman (see also Keri Russell’s comments here).
Last but most definitely not least is another fantastic Viola Davis 2016 cover and while the other woman are giving off oh so serious facial expressions with a hint of knowing smirk from Olivia Wilde, I love that Davis is a full on smile shot.
I am pretty happy that because I get the digital issue I’m not going to have to decide which one I want as I’ll get all five – if I had to choose Taraji would probably edge out the rest by the narrowest of margins – and the issue is available on select newsstands from today (January 13) and nationwide on January 19. Laverne Cox is gasp worthy in Elizabeth Kennedy serving all levels of drama from her gown to her makeup.
SO MANY CAPES THIS YEAR! All caps needed because Emilia Clarke’s Valentino gown is a vampy turn I did not expect from her.
And for a softer caped turn we have Saoirse Ronan in ethereal Yves Saint Laurent couture.
One of the ‘surprising not so surprising’ wins of the evening came from Lady Gaga (who thanked Matt Bomer first because who wouldn’t?) and she looks like a movie star from the 50s in custom Atelier Versace.
I know some were underwhelmed by Alicia Vikander’s apron style pleated Louis Vuitton, but I am so here for it as it matches her general super chill vibe. And I think she will go big at the Oscars.
This Alexander McQueen is a little witchy boudoir from Caitriona Balfe, but I am also enjoying this twist on a black gown.
A train looks incredible, but it can also cause logistical problems with people standing on it as Taraji P. Henson found out when she went up to collect Best Actress; so I can see why she changed out of this Stella McCartney wonder for the after parties. It looks incredible here as she poses with her Golden Globe.
Valentino featured big on our end of year “Look of the Week” posts and this is another excellent frock from this fashion house with Kirsten Dunst going full cleav. It is a shame she didn’t win for her Fargo role, but hopefully another project in the future will mean more Dunst on TV.
As 2015 comes to a close we should take a moment to think of all the TV we have watched and avoid dwelling on the ever growing list of things to catch up on. There is plenty to look forward to in the first few months of the new year including The X-Files revival (of which I have no chill about), Agent Carter (next week!), Broad City, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson (which looks like every level of ridiculous/amazing) and The Americans.
For now let’s bask in the best of 2015 and for your easy perusal here are all of our costuming, music and red carpet essays/posts in one place.
Our number one show of the year if we were to rank these things in list form and The Americans took everything from season 2 and kicked it up a gear from tension levels to secrets which were shared. The costuming was as intricate as ever balancing disguises with Philip and Elizabeth’s everyday attire with some shocking moments which featured the removal of some of these items. New levels of intimacy were reached in a scene which took at home dentistry to the extreme which had me both transfixed while also half covering my eyes.
This has been an incredible year for music on TV with final scenes and end credit offerings hitting sublime notes from many shows. You’re the Worst went big this year in their storyline choices and the music that accompanied the many crushing moments; adding to these highly emotive scenes in the way a soundtrack should. We’ve got the perfect playlist for you to end 2015 on.
#LadySuitWatch2015 was a big thing here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and Alana Bloom’s season 3 change of style on Hannibal took this trend to new and amazing heights.
The 1970s is my favorite fashion decade (for reasons) and Mad Men and Fargo captured the beginning and end of this period in very different ways. Two characters called Peggy both stood out and while they are worlds apart they both capture everything I love about the styling of this period.
There were so many fantastic costuming moments across a variety of genres and viewing platforms that we had to split this picture heavy rundown into two posts. From dragon necklaces to the discussion of male nudity on cable with denim, leather jackets and red lipstick all getting a look in. Plus ultimate cabaret performing attire and a whole lot more.
So many sartorial moments of excellence in 2015 on magazine covers, editorials, the red carpet and at a wide arrange of events. Out of the Box gave a weekly compilation of the best of these and now we have our favorites of the year including this jaw droppingly good Taraji P. Henson W cover. The second part of our costuming round-up includes a show I only started watching this week and ones I have been obsessed with for a long time. Hoodies, Hollywood glam, saying goodbye to some faves and many other clothing moments to salivate over and celebrate. This year really has been incredible for television.

We have written about a lot of outfits both on and off screen this year and the 2015 Best Of series turns its attention toward our Look of the Week column, which has featured a whole host of red carpet appearances, magazine covers/editorial styling and many other sartorially infused events. Here is the first part of our “Out of the Box” rundown showcasing our favorites from a very stylish year.
Best Magazine Cover
Taraji P. Henson has appeared on a lot of covers this year and this Diana Ross inspired shoot for W had my jaw on the floor and it is why this issue is still sat on my coffee table. What I love about this image is that it is so simple and yet so incredibly sexy in a way that is so far from Cookie (who is also incredibly sexy).
Best Cape
At the summer TCA CBS, CW and Showtime party Ruth Wilson wore a stunning caped flamingo Valentino frock and had me dreaming of sunshine and sipping on a margarita.
Best Gingham
For her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Lizzy Caplan not only looked super summer cool in a black and white gingham Lela Rose dress, but she also brought up the WB with fellow guest Jon Hamm. Switching out Birkenstocks for black pumps from the backstage walk to the show also showcases how to dress up/down this outfit.
Most on Point Dress
When the movie you are promoting is set in space it might be a tad on the nose to wear a dress this intergalactic, but I say go with it and Kate Mara did just that in this stunning Valentino number.
Best Leather Jacket
Olivia Wilde has been a regular in these parts for the last few months rocking a variety of styles and this leather jacket over floral Valentino (a brand doing very well in this end of year listicle) gives this an edge over the other outfit faves. Trusty red pumps have been worn on multiple occasions by Wilde and work with everything from 70s inspired to color blocking.
Best Leather Pants
Keri Russell favors leather in all forms whether skirts, jumpsuits or pants and as her Late Night with Seth Meyers ensemble demonstrates she looks cool as fuck mixing a show tee with heels, black blazer and these leather pants. The pop of lip color gives an extra kick and I am always thankful that makeup artist Tina Turnbow shares what brands she uses (and I was very lucky to be gifted this lipstick earlier this year).
Best Playsuit
Playsuits can be hard to pull off, but Kristen Stewart is effortless chic in sequinned Zuhair Murad with legs going for miles. At the time I mentioned how much I enjoyed the fact that she lost the heels and walked most the red carpet barefoot and I still do. A lady after my own heart.
Best Jumpsuit
Rebecca Ferguson was a revelation in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and she also stood out at the London Premiere in this stunning DVF Jumpsuit. This was just before I wore my very own DVF dress at my soon to be brother-in-law’s wedding and I was very excited about all of this (as you can tell).
Best LadySuit
#LadySuitWatch2015 has been TV Ate My Wardrobe’s most used hashtag this year and when I saw Amandla Stenberg’s Dazed photoshoot in which she rocks this look I pretty much screamed in delight. Stenberg has been killing it all over social media with her super smart and observant takes on everything from cultural appropriation to how teenagers get discredited for their opinions just because of their age. I can’t wait to see what she does in 2016.
Best Floral Suit
This year has cemented the notion that Michael B. Jordan can wear suits in any color or pattern from Vivienne Westwood plaid to textured D&G at the Met Gala. And he graced the pages of Voguein another D&G floral suit; this time showing he could work something even bolder.
Best Polka Dots and Stripes
This is pretty much my platonic ideal of any outfit.
Best Co-Star Pockets, Patterns and Giggles
They haven’t spent any time on screen together since season 1 and photos like this of Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams have me longing for the day the Stark sisters will be reunited and then burn the place to the fucking ground. Thankfully due to all the Game of Thrones press commitments we get plenty of delightful off screen moments like this. Clothing wise Maisie Williams has pledged allegiance to dresses with pockets and Sophie Turner is doing strong patterned work here at the GoT premiere.

There is nothing not adorable about this Matt Bomer look.
Best Sweater – Part 2
If there is one sweater I coveted more than any other in 2015 it is this Coach space themed knitwear as worn by many including Cobie Smulders at Sundance.
Best Front Row Watching at NYFW
Two Nickis – one real, one fictional – at the Alexander Wang NYFW runway show back in February and I am always fond of the random groupings at fashion events.
Best Fashion Campaign
A campaign which still makes me gasp all these months later and Samira Wiley is crushing it for Christian Siriano.
Best Lady Hangout
Squad Goals is one phrase which has been used to an exhausting degree in 2015 (by myself included), but yeah I’m going to have to use it here because this is an ultimate lady hangout situation.

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2015” costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking; we want to celebrate the work of television’s best costume designers.
Now is the turn of a huge range of shows we have been watching this year from network, cable and streaming with comedy, drama and all those other hard to categorize scripted offerings. There has been so many fantastic individual moments that we have had to split this post into two otherwise the scrolling would be endless.
Here is Part 1 of the standout costuming moments in 2015.
Most On Point Accessorizing
What better way to appease the dragon that has done a runner than wear a necklace bearing a very familiar image and this comes in particularly handy for Daenerys in “The Dance of Dragons” when Drogon makes a very timely entrance. The influence of Daenerys’ heritage has been visible throughout the texture of her costuming which at times has been scaly in appearance. Yunus & Eliza designed this stunning piece (click here for a closer look) and it really is fit for a queen.
The Leather Jacket Award
As with last year there have been a whole slew of leather jacket wearing stunners, but there is one lady who takes wearing this garment to every outfit level and that is Jessica Jones. Not pictured are the very 90s looking jeans that are also glued to her body pretty much all of the time and this signature look makes sense when the show takes a deep dive into her backstory.
Who Rocks a Lot of Polka Dots
Cookie Lyon has gone through a style evolution since she was released from prison going from matching animal prints to high end garments as she has caught up with trends and got accustomed to her wealth. One of my favorites is this Dolce & Gabbana polka dot blouse; perfect for a dramatic exit and a fun take on the tablecloth party trick. Cookie’s always going to eat.
Best Mustache – 1980s Edition
Not only did Oscar Isaac take dancing in dad jeans to Bruce Springsteen to new levels, but he also worked this mustache in ways I did not think possible in Show Me a Hero. The mini-series from David Simon is terrific and devastating and not just for the 80s fashion. And even several months after watching it still makes my heart ache when I think about Oscar Isaac’s performance.
Best Mustache – 1970s Edition
Of all the Mad Men characters who would embrace a new decade with some additional facial hair it really makes sense that it would be Roger Sterling. It could easily be kinda skeezy (and of course Roger has entered this territory on more than one occasion), but there’s also something elder statesmen about it and that’s what he is. And I would happily watch an endless loop of Roger and Peggy hanging out in their now deserted office.
Top Hat Placement and Male Nudity on Cable
Alleviating the awkward of the first time with cute top hat parlor tricks is Bertie on The Knick and it is all around adorable. While this is the most of Michael Angarano that we get to see, cable has embraced male nudity this season on a level we haven’t previously seen with both The Leftovers and The Affair showing far more dudes naked than women this year. Game of Thrones you have some catching up to do.

My response to seeing Abbi as Val for the first time is pretty much the same as Ilana’s jaw on the floor expression:
Ladysuits of the shorts variety are classic cabaret attire and I am so here for this Judy Garland/Liza Minnelli style and singing mashup inspiration.
#LadySuitWatch2015 Patterned Shirt Winner
Denise is not only stylish as hell as demonstrated by her movie premiere ladysuit wearing ways, but she is also one of the best things about Aziz Ansari’s excellent Master of None helping make a citizen’s arrest in the stellar “Ladies and Gentleman” and offering up sound dating advice (even if she ends up ignoring it).
The Outwear and Boots Crime Fighting Title
Season 3 of The Bridge (Broen/Bron) lost one of its main stars, but didn’t lose any of its quality introducing a new partner for Saga who turned out to be just as compelling (if not even more so than his predecessor – sorry Martin). Style wise the pair complement each other rather well favoring classic coats and boots for their crime fighting attire; Saga is still all about the olive leather pants and Henrik also tucks his trousers into his boots because who wants those flapping in the wind while running after a suspect.
Best Reason to Invest in a Big Warm Coat
Fortitude is part X-Files like mystery, part exploration of the human condition in an extreme and isolated environment. It is also a very good advert for furry hoods and big coats; yes I even invested in my own.
Red Lipstick Queen
There is plenty to love about Peggy Carter and season 2 is just a couple of weeks away! Agent Carter also gets added to the How TV Ate My Wardrobe list in the makeup department as I invested in Peggy’s Besame 1946 lipstick and there is also the bonus of beautiful packaging along with fantastic red lips.
Denim Dream
1981 was a great year for denim and there is a residual 70s influence on fashion in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp with high waisted flares and dungaree delights. Also pairing anything with short shorts is fair game.
Best Future April Ludgate
2015 saw the end of Parks and Recreationprompting plenty of finale tears. This also means saying goodbye to one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s biggest style influences and I am happy to report that future April Ludgate is still very much in our sartorial good graces.
What to Wear on Your European Vacation
Traveling across Europe with Hannibal Lecter means packing your finest threads and Bedelia is up for that challenge with this blue 1940s spy looking ensemble even if this is the opposite of staying incognito.
Sunglasses I Need in my Life
Yes I am still highly coveting Gretchen’s round opal yellow Wayfarer sunglasses for the second year in a row.
Most On Point Accessorizing Part 2
Gina is not just the TV Ate My Wardrobe Sweater Queen (her turtleneck game has been strong all season), but she’s also the reason why I yell “Wolfie” at the screen whenever any of the direwolves pop up on Game of Thrones. So when Gina appeared on screen in the episode “Beach House,” which kicked off the new year for Brooklyn Nine-Nine in this hat/scarf/glove combo it also caused me to yell “Wolfie” on this occasion too.
Festive Relationship Goals
Looking is almost over (*sob*) and before its one final outing in the form of a TV movie next year, let us bask in Eddie’s Santa outfit and how Agustín went from loathsome narcissist to the dude (and ship) I was heavily invested in by the end of season 2. Good character development, show.
For once on “Out of the Box” we’ve got more pants than frocks and it’s not just ladysuits hitting those sartorial highs. It is fun to mix things up especially as there has already been a fancy shindig this week that featured plenty of fabulous looks.
Keri Russell loves aleather pant and this all black ensemble that she wore to the Sierra Club’s “Act in Paris, A Night of Comedy and Climate Action” is very much her signature fuss free style. That doesn’t mean to say it’s a boring outfit and the variety of textures elevate the look. A slightly darker red lipstick is very welcome especially paired with this up do. For a bolder Keri Russell color palette take a gander at these Americans season 4 filming photos. Actual screaming at those boots.
This is Olivia Wilde’s third appearance on “Out of the Box” in almost as many weeks and while each one has been distinctive in its own way; the choice of shoe color has remained the same. Red pumps have given each look an extra pop and I am in love with this 70s inspired spin on tailored menswear that Wilde chose to wear for the Hollywood Reporter’s Indie Contenders roundtable. Yes I am thrilled that another roundtable season is upon us. The windowpane check high waisted Houghton pants are pure Annie Hall and the Kate Spade New York blouse adds a feminine twist.
Oh hey there Brit Marling! You can join #LadySuitWatch2015 with this flamboyant Gucci Resort pink affair at the LACMA 2015 Art+Film Gala. The pants are perhaps a little on the baggy side, which is giving me nostalgic flashbacks to everything 90s, but it’s still working like a charm. And one thing all the ladies in pants have in common this week is interesting collar/tie/scarf details.

Henson is on the cover of The Hollywood Reporteras part of the annual Beauty Issue making it her third time this year (the other covers are here and here) appearing with her makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff. They talk about avoiding Cookie like makeup on the red carpet so don’t expect to see any purple lipsticks and Taraji’s favorite red carpet look (the last Emmys). That is one killer brow arch that Henson is giving and the different shades of blue outfits add to this striking image.

When not showing off their excellent resting bitch face Taraji P. Henson and Jussie Smollett are delivering great panel attire in polka dots and plaid at Entertainment Weekly’s “EW Fest.” Henson also continues the red shoes trend and I am thankful for colorful footwear.
Strong sweater feelings are working overtime courtesy of Matt Bomer’s patterned knit number at the “EW Fest” especially as it is paired with a shirt and tie. Also those horn rimmed glasses. Emma Roberts’ leopard print boots are sneaking into the shot and I actually really like them; the random strapping effect on her tights, not so much.
Such a delightful look from Judy Greer in Sachin & Babi Noir polka dots and stripes at the InStyle Awards.Simultaneously adding an edge while also staying true to her twee style is Michelle Williams wearing leather Louis Vuitton and I am seriously coveting those boots.
Combining two of this week’s trends – red shoes and leather – and looking all kinds of cool in floral Valentino is Olivia Wilde at the Lunchbox Fund Benefit Event.
Another patterned delight from Valentino and this one skirts the too sheer territory; Naomie Harris is working this look at the Berlin Spectre premiere and it looks like a map from a time long ago.
Masters of Sexfavorite and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford returns to the stage in a revival of Sylvia. Hitting the opening night red carpet in a fabulous black sequin frock and metallic pumps; Ashford also gets bonus bold lipstick points.

Welcome to the Looking feels portion of this week’s TV Insta and as the movie starts shooting this week most of the cast are back in San Francisco. It is bittersweet that this charming show is coming to an end so soon, but at least there will be one last final hurrah instead of just getting canceled into oblivion.
Back to the beginning and a super cute shot that is reinforcing my confused shipper feelings. Never have I gone back and forth this much on who I want a character to end up with.
Last week’s episode of You’re the Worst answered the Gretchen mystery in a way that managed to make me want to curl up and sob while still delivering on the laughs, which is an incredibly hard line to walk. Kether Donohue posted a tribute to Aya Cash’s stunning performance giving further insight into this episode and nails what makes this such a special show. Plus this photo delivers on Cash as my sunglasses queen.
Dream aesthetic ahoy from Holly Taylor wearing what looks to be an excellent sweater and living the food dream on the set of The Americans. I’ve said it before, but it is easy to buy that Taylor could be Keri Russell’s daughter from her hair alone.
These might not quite go with the spectacular dragon necklace and the other costume embellishments Daenerys wears on Game of Thrones, but they could hide quite nicely under her blonde locks.
Plenty of singing and dancing from this week’s TV Instagram highlights. Plus costuming sneak peeks and more shows going back into production while others are coming to an end. Ah the cycle of TV (and especially cable shows).
Queen of Dubsmash Hayley Atwell with co-star Enver Gjokaj doing the impossible and making “Uptown Funk” feel fresh again. She isn’t wrong about those hips.
Tatiana Maslany switched out her fantastic ruffled Roksanda ruffled jumpsuit (stay tuned for Look of the Week) for something a little more comfy post panel and Donnie himself, Kristian Bruun captured the look.
Alison Bennett wrote last week’s episode of You’re the Worst and the end of “Side Bitch” was just as emotionally devastating as the Gretchen’s trip in the middle of night a couple of weeks ago. Luckily for us Paul himself Allan McLeod has a bunch of sweet photos to soften the blow.
Of course the ChumHum office has a slide. Cush Jumbo’s video also indicates that Lucca Quinn will be sticking around, much to our delight and one of The Good Wife’s most challenging clients will be making an appearance.
The Americans won’t be back until the start of 2016, but in the meantime the Russian contingent are sharing some set photos and once again Nina has some fantastic knitwear.
It may not be a Mindy Project behind the scenes picture and yet it still makes the TV Insta cut as this scene made me laugh a whole bunch. And I continue to have Mindy pajama envy.
