After Comic-Con it has been a pretty quiet on the red carpet front so it is a convention of a political kind that dominates “Out of the Box” this week and we’ll be taking a look at the celebrities who spoke at the DNC in Philadelphia. Angela Bassett working it on Day 3 wearing a sophisticated blue Karen Millen that wouldn’t look out of place on The Good Wife or Scandal; setting the right glam to serious tone. This is how you coordinate without looking matchy matchy and Lena Dunham’s Gabriela Hearst off the shoulder white frock is a style best and America Ferrara in a black and white Black Halo gown adds an extra punch with colorful pumps. When asked to stretch things out before introducing Paul Simon (and after giving a great speech) Sarah Silverman worked the camera giving the actual Look of the Week while Al Franken went peak dad on the joke front while they waited for Simon. Silverman also kept things classic and serious with her choice of ensemble. From the Day 2 walk through and I love everything about this shot of Elizabeth Banks and her fabulous paisley number. And for the actual thing Elizabeth Banks took a slightly more fun dress approach than some of the other celebrity speakers in a very cute Elie Saab, which works with the celeb filled and Pitch Perfect inspired “Fight Song” video that Banks helped conceive and introduced at the DNC. Switching out from the DNC to magazine covers and September issues are coming! UK Elle is taking this opportunity to give themselves a makeover with a re-design and September is the perfect time for this as it always strikes me as the month for new beginnings. All four covers go in close and look great, but it is Amandla Stenberg’s that really stood out and I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on a copy.
After the Comic-Con Instagram special we resume normal service and a fun mix of returning to set with iZombie, Barb from Stranger Things love, saying goodbye to Looking and celeb birthday wishes from some of our favorites. Pretty much a whole lot of dreaminess.
Amy Sedaris knows. #Barb4EVA.
A very cute dress and Amy Sedaris is also repping bestie Sarah Jessica Parker in a pair of her pumps.
@lookinghbo @lookinghbola #lookinghbo #latinopride
I haven’t watched the Looking movie yet as I’m saving it – sometimes I do this when I know there will be no more – but Frankie J Alvarez is giving me all the feelings as he documents the end of this special show.
Back from Comic-Con and the lab coats are back on for the iZombie autopsy team.
Everything about this is perfect.
Also in the category of best celeb birthday wishes.
And January Jones should continue to caption all Mad Men promo shots.
Elementary season 5 sneak peek; don’t think the landing will be quite this comfortable for Sherlock.
BrainDead is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows of the summer; the cast is great, it is fun and the costuming is highly covetable. Former Good Wife costume designer Daniel Lawson continues to hit it out of the park.
A reminder that I still need to watch BoJack Horseman. I don’t know how I have let it get to three seasons without seeing any (I know).
It shocked me to find this photo because I remember the day so well. I was respected enough to be honored at the Maui Film Festival – but not known enough to have a stylist or "glam squad". I found this Madewell dress in my closet. The most I knew how to do for grooming was pin half of it back and blink on a few coats of mascara. Before we went to the ceremony I felt flashes of embarrassment – I worried I was too fat, too ugly, too depressingly banal to be honored. I cringed to take photos. But today I see this moment and feel only love for myself. There is nothing wrong with this person. She is honest and beautiful and committed to showing up for this life. I wish I saw myself then as I see myself now. There is no need to waste your time working to be anything other than you. So hey, #tbt – thank you for the chance to honor all the hilarious ways we didn't know ourselves upon first meeting, and all the exciting new ways we get to know ourselves while we keep living.
An important look back from Brie Larson. We are so lucky to have her share this experience in relation to where she was and where she is now. And also that dress is wonderful. Sometimes what you have in your closet is all you need.
A special bonus “Behind the Insta-Scenes” column this week covering all things Comic-Con; from TV superheroes to movies. Plus casts from shows including iZombie, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Orphan Black descending on San Diego.
Kicking off with one of the most stylish moments from the whole convention and the Black Panther press tour and movie is already top of my Marvel most anticipated list.
More Danai Gurira and this time with her Walking Dead co-stars. Not just an excuse to see Gurira’s amazing LWD again, but also for some Jeffery Dean Morgan beardie selfie goodness.
Comic-Con Instagram is awash with the mass group cast selfie; here is the Kong: Skull Island effort. A little on the blurry side, but points for the amount of people in it.
Behind the scenes on these group posed shots is also a big thing from Comic-Con Insta. Chris Pratt is looking in a whole different direction.
More casual style treats from Tatiana Maslany and the whole Orphan Black cast, which looks so tiny when you remember Maslany plays over 50% of the parts. Lovely to see Maslany’s double Kathryn Alexandre taking part in these festivities as she is just as vital.
When Donnie met Hodor.
One of my favorite things about Comic-Con is getting to see the Game of Thrones cast hanging with co-stars they have never had a scene with.
The CW superheroes fly in style (sans super powers). For a really thorough Comic-Con journey and behind the scenes then Grant Gustin has your more than covered.
Forever Spy Daddy feels. Plus Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist are wearing the same style of Ray-Ban; superheroes in style sync.
I heart this cast hard.
The above sentiment also applies here.
No Hannibal Panel (or Pannibal) and Comic-Con this year, but Bryan Fuller made sure Hannibal was in attendance.
James Wolk with coffee instantly makes me think of Mad Men and for that I am grateful.
For regular Behind the Insta Scenes check out this week’s other column here.
“Out of the Box” covered the start of the 2016 convention and now we have the best looks from the rest of the weekend. The Marvel casting department continue to crush it and this group shot from Saturday after the Brie Larson is Captain Marvel reveal is giving me so many feelings. This is a whole lot of talented women and I suddenly no longer have superhero movie fatigue (the new Wonder Woman trailer also helped).
Plus there is a lot of different style choices going on here and this means the focus is spread throughout; green in various shades is a the dominant color choice and there is a good mix of pants and frocks in varying lengths. Basically, the list of things I love about this photo is long.Let’s break down some of the individual looks from the group shot above.
First up Lupita Nyong’o wearing Givenchy Resort 2017 (instant Beyoncé playing in my head) striking the balance between casual and fancy in a frock which could do day or evening in equal measure. A green crushed velvet suit is not an easy ensemble to pull off, but for Tilda Swinton this is very much in her sartorial wheelhouse and once again she is adding even more color with a pop of pink lipstick. Also going for the pants/green approach or rather pants adjacent is Brie Larson in a Gabriela Hearst Resort 2017 jumpsuit; giving of a 1970s superhero vibe, which I am more than here for.Captain Marvel wasn’t the only Marvel casting news and Danai Gurira joining Black Panther as Okoye got me all in a fluster and not just because of how incredible the promo tour for this movie will be. Gurira’s gone for a knockout dress for this announcement and I wouldn’t expect any less from a TV Ate My Wardrobe fave.Double Danai Gurira and opting for simple chic at the Walking Dead panel (#Richonne4EVA) with a dreamy dress choice (except for those of us with a tendency to spill).T-Rex sweater is an instant hit – still coveting this Coach one – and Michael B. Jordan doesn’t change out of his Black Panther panel ensemble for the Entertainment Weekly panel because he is already looking pretty damn good. On the dressier end at this party is Jamie Alexander and I cannot resist something this sparkly. Bonus lipstick points too.More cute outfit with a leather skirt edge delights (as previously seen on Tatiana Maslany and various other attendees) and Nathalie Emmanuel ticks all the casual cool Comic-Con boxes while on SiriusXM’s Entertainment Weekly radio broadcast. Tatiana Maslany’s got sparkly shoes and a plaid playsuit on while hanging out on the IMDb yacht (she also wore this at the EW “Women Who Kick Ass” panel) and she continues her every day style reign. Double Maslany because clones and also I really like this second outfit (plus I have those sneakers!). Going the Michael B. Jordan chilled approach at the EW bash in skinny jeans, a varsity jacket and a funky blouse. A vibe I always get from Maslany at these events is she looks like she is there to have a good time and outfit restriction never factors in.
Comic-Con is here! As I’m writing this there are still many panels to go and this is the tip of the Comic-Con style iceberg, which is a whole lot like PaleyFest and TCA in that it varies from super casual cool to the dressier end of the scale.
Today we have both in the menswear department from the open air IMAX world premiere of Star Trek Beyond kicking things off in San Diego this week. There is also a dash of politics and more movie screenings.I really miss Selfie and reading Jon Cho’s comments in this amazing and insightful interview with Vulture about this show only adds to this sense of sadness about its early cancellation:
“Selfie was a chance for me to be centered, confident. There was some kind of stillness to the character that I felt was much more me than any other person I played.”
Henry was also a suits kinda guy and Cho looks great at the Star Trek Beyond premiere in this blue number.Normally I might shake my head at how casual this look is for a premiere of a movie that someone is in, but Idris Elba has the best reason for shorts and sneakers as his suit was lost at the airport. Plus he still manages to crush it and look cool as fuck despite this wardrobe mishap. This week I cleaned out my closet and it was no surprise that stripes were the dominant staple; at the Star Trek Beyond premiere Christian Slater shows that dudes can do this style just as well and my only slight negative note is going sockless with loafers. The iZombie cast are taking a quick break from starting shooting season 3 and have headed to San Diego for Comic-Con and they presented at the MTV Fandom Awards last night (July 21). The split up the front of the dress is having a big revival this year and while I’m still not completely sold on this trend, I do really like the color, texture and floral print of Rose McIver’s frock and it is ideal for this event.
Looking forward to seeing more from the iZombie cast in San Diego and check back for more Comic-Con style coverage over the next few days.Co-stars supporting co-stars in other projects is my fave and Danielle Brooks is on hand at the screening of Uzo Aduba’s new movie Tallulah (which played at Sundance and I am looking forward to seeing). Brooks looks fabulous in another floral dream this week; wearing a Fuzzi frock and ASOS silver pumps and Aduba goes classic in a black dress and strappy shoes. A slightly different spin on the co-stars supporting each other format and Jon Stewart made a much welcome and needed return to late night with a couple of appearances this week on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Stephen Colbert shared this photo from last night’s show on his Twitter and this brings me so much joy in this bonkers political week/month/year.
Jon’s still working his fantastic post Daily Show beard and clip on ties are dangerous to chest hair and not a great sartorial choice, but everything about the above shot is wonderful. Plus Stephen scrubs up well even when he is poking out the side of his desk.
To watch Jon Stewart’s segment click on the video below and bask in his anger and blanked out swears.
Miss you, Jon.
Some Emmy nomination related posts, Instagram style highs and casts returning to set are all on the agenda this week.
The Wine Show is coming to Hulu August 13 and get ready for the Matthews in full cheeky scamp mode with a big dose of dad jokes and puns. It is wonderful.
The Looking movie airs this Sunday and while I am so not ready to be over (a thing I keep repeating in relation to this project) I am excited to feel all the feelings. Frankie J. Alvarez is doing a very good job in preparing me.
Chris Geere looks back to season 1 premiere of You’re the Worst and it isn’t too long until Gretchen and Jimmy will be back on our screens. *insert prayer hands emoji here*
Now to the present with Aya Cash eating and reading (great book choice).
Lots of fall show casts are back on set and Vincent Rodriguez III from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend gives good hot weather hydration reminders (my apartment is a sweatbox so I definitely need to do this).
So Rachel Bloom didn’t get the acting nomination I was hoping for and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend missed out on Best Comedy, but they did score song and choreography nods for “Settle for Me” (and two other dance numbers).
in case anyone didnt hear my mom scream in Panera; that lil box in the top left means #TheAmericans got nominated for an #emmy!!! im still screaming internally and idk what to do w myself rn, so lucky to be on this show and congrats to everyone involved and everyone nominated! 😍😭💃🏼👑✨💥🍕🍪🏆🌈📺🎈🎉🎊❤️💕❤️💕💯
While we’re on the subject of Emmys; I was very excited for this and while I wasn’t in a Panera, I maybe did let out a bit (okay a lot) of a scream.
NOMMY EMINATIONS! Oh no wait…. I mean EMMY NOMINATIONS!!! Now THIS is what I call the definition of GIRL.POWER! So honoured to be with my QWEENS! 🙌👸🏽 (And yes that's me in costume standing by a teeny tiny porta potty in a field somewhere in Spain questioning if it could withstand allll.dis.dragon mamma) #ifiwasabettinggalidsayusladiesstandagoodchancewiththe3outta5…;) #gameofthroneswesalutethankpraiseyou ❤️
Emilia Clarke celebrates the Game of Thrones supporting actress category domination – sad to see no Sophie Turner – with a look at the not so glamorous nature of set life.
And Maisie Williams does so with this cute and terrifying video.
Also in the supporting category is Constance Zimmer (if only Shiri Appleby could have been nominated in the lead category too) wearing this fabulous dress from the UnREAL season 2 episode “Infiltration.”
Another returning to set photo and it is good to see Jonny Lee Miller back all buttoned up with Lucy Liu looking as flawless as ever on Elementary.
Any hot sauce for the iZombie cast?
Gina Rodriguez continues her summer of excellent hair changes while on hiatus going blonde and crushing it with those funky sunglasses.
Danielle Brooks wins the Best Style on Instagram this week with this beautiful look.
I know this barefoot walk so well. An unsurprisingly very fabulous outfit from Mindy Kaling.
Ending things this week with a fun one from Chelsea Peretti and Andre Braugher gives great flat cap.
Stranger Things is here for all your coming of age movie nostalgia needs and the new 8-part Netflix series delivers on the early 80s front on a variety of levels. The music is one thing that instantly stands out blending a tension building synth score with a variety of standout songs including The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” threading throughout. One standout moment comes at the end of the second episode when we smash to the credits just as the guitar kicks in on The Bangle’s version of the classic Simon & Garfunkel track “A Hazy Shade of Winter.” Simon & Garfunkel have a special place in my heart and I have been listening to them for as long as I can remember – they were a staple cassette choice in car journeys – and I am always thrilled to hear one of their tracks getting used; cover version or original.
Even though you will want to click straight on the next episode (because whoa that ending) and Netflix might even autoplay (as it rudely tried to do with me) take a moment to enjoy this song choice. Or click on the video below.
This intro is usually where I would complain about the lack of nominations for The Americans, but this is an Emmy miracle as Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys and the show all received nods today and I maybe blacked out after this so I’m catching up on everything else still.
It wouldn’t be the Emmys without some grumbles and only about half of my wish list made the cut – no Leftovers, Rachel Bloom, Aya Cash and more – but I am so surprised/amazed/happy about The Americans finally breaking through in its forth season that it somehow softens the blow of the other snubs.I’m here not to talk acting nominations, instead I want to take a quick look at the costume design nominees. There are three different categories for costume; contemporary, period/fantasy and variety/non-fiction/reality. Specific episodes are chosen to submit and some of my favorite costume moments from this year are featured including the incredible red gown designed by Terry Dresbach for Claire Fraser to wear to the fanciest of fancy parties on Outlander, the jaw dropping revenge/mourning/coronation outfits as worn by Cersei in the Game of Thrones season finale, everyone in white at the wedding that turned disaster on Transparent and Lady Gaga’s stunning American Horror Story purple number.
As with every category there are some notable omissions including Katie Irish taking us further into the 80s on The Americans with Elizabeth’s cover Patty, all the many covering up coats and the Princess Di inspired maternity wear. The Knick picked up some technical nominations, but I am disappointed this isn’t one of them.
In the contemporary category I am thrilled to see Daniel Lawson recognized for his Good Wife costumes particularly after this one of my snubs from last year. As with last year I am sad to see some of the bold wardrobes from comedy not among the nominees with Salvador Perez for The Mindy Project and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Tina Nigro missing the cut. Girls had a stunning season and for Marnie’s red dress alone I would have loved to see Jenn Rogien on here.
The full list of costume design nominations are here and congratulations to all on this list!

A day earlier than normal, but lots of summer looks from daytime events and premieres as “Out of the Box” delivers bold color, pattern and pleats.
Enjoy! At the Glamour and Facebook luncheon to discuss Election 2016; Danielle Brooks and Uzo Aduba gave a lesson in how to dress for a day shindig in black and white pleats and not too sickly sweet pink. The Orange is the New Black cast also returned to set in the last week to start shooting season 5.Continuing in the fantastic day dress with pleats department is Zoe Kazan in this super cute patterned number and I am coveting those shoes hard.Keeping things casual and cool also at this Glamour luncheon is another TV Ate My Wardrobe fave and Jessica Williams’ patterned frock, denim jacket and white sneakers gives daytime outfit goals. This look also nicely doubles up for 2 Dope Queens performing attire. The Ghostbusters cast bring so much color and patterned joy to the LA premiere and this is how you co-ordinate without going matchy matchy. Also at the Ghostbusters premiere – and I am so looking forward to this movie – is Lizzy Caplan in floaty Erdem; an ideal summer look with contrasting Charlotte Olympia bag. There’s something a little witchy about Diane Kruger’s Jason Wu gown and this manages to have an element of sheer that doesn’t make me automatically recoil. A victory for this style, I think.
Lots of behind the scenes treats this week including soon to be returning shows such as You’re the Worst and Looking (in a one off movie form). Plus the first table read of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend season 2 and a whole lot of style highlights from Instagram.
Aya Cash gives an inside look into the different types of cover ups worn when filming sex scenes on cable and on network. Yes I googled (or rather Binged as I’m on my mother’s laptop and maybe on a CW show from two years ago) Shibue; they have a lot of products.
All the LOLs at Aya Cash and this not so subtle shade throwing.
I am already highly anticipating this episode. As I mentioned last week 2 Dope Queens turned my teary state into a much needed moment of laughter and this is one of many endorsements I have for this podcast.
Alrighty! Every day for the next ten days, leading up to our premiere next Saturday July 23 at 10p EST on @hbo , I'll be posting a fun pic from our shoot this past November. I'm so excited to share this beautiful film with all of you and I hope you'll stick with me with whatever I'm blessed to work on after @lookinghbo is over for good. In the meantime, here's us at Li Po, getting our drank on #chinesemaitais #lipo #agusteddie #lookinghbo
The Looking movie is almost here and while I am not ready to say goodbye, I am ready for all the behind the scenes photos like this.
BrainDead is a lot of fun and pretty much the ideal summer show. It doesn’t entirely know what it wants to be tonally, but I could watch Aaron Tveit and Mary Elizabeth Winstead heating up the screen all day long.
And the Orange is the New Black cast are back on set for season 5.
UnREAL hasn’t been hitting the heights of season 1, but this week’s episode was a turn in the right direction and the it happened to be directed by none other than Shiri Appleby who crushed it (and me) both in front of and behind the camera.
Busy Philipps is also killing it in the robes stakes and I’m gonna go ahead and add this to the robes I love list.
Jenny Slate delivers us a good example of a great cooking look.
I finished Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (which I love) and now I get to follow Rachel Bloom on Instagram! Season 2 table read time!
Also on the recently followed list and I am so ready to look back at the many varied costumes on Sex and the City.
Also looking back as yesterday was the fifteenth anniversary of Legally Blonde and Reese Witherspoon celebrated in style with an Elle Woods costume retrospective including this bikini number.
