Prints, Jumpsuits and Red Dancing Lady Dresses at Summer TCA

The Television Critics’ Association 2017 Summer press tour is currently in its second week and to stop “Out of the Box” from being super long, I’ve decided to do a separate post dedicated to the panel attire that has caught my attention.

One key thing when picking out an outfit for TCA is how it will look sitting down because that’s what you’re gonna be doing and most of the pictures will be from this angle. Occasionally there will be the entrance, arrival or party shots, but the only guarantee is that sitting down one.

Also you don’t want to be going too formal; think perfect daytime attire such as fancy office or even something that would be wedding guest appropriate. There aren’t strict rules for these kinds of events and there is plenty of scope for getting it right. As you will see from looks below.Outlander is back next month (!) with Jamie and Claire separated by time and at the panel they revealed when you can expect to see them reunited. Caitriona Balfe chose my favorite kind of look for TCA – see also here – in a fabulous print. This Marni frock looks great sitting down and a bold pattern is always a winner.Balfe’s onscreen Outlander daughter Sophie Skelton also went the print route and one issue with the whole sitting down panel wear is that it can be the ultimate tease; sometimes we only get a glimpse. But this is where Instagram comes in.

Because we get behind the scenes swishy shots like this one and it turns out what I thought was a blouse and skirt is actually this dress by Maje. Instagram really has made hunting down pieces of clothing/make-up that much easier.
Confession; I have never seen Everwood so the big reunion panel didn’t have the same emotional effect on me, but I do appreciate a cast that likes each other this much. And Emily VanCamp’s pajama-adjacent floral jacket paired with skinny jeans and heels gets two enthusiastic thumbs up from me.Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Vella Lovell gives great jumpsuit in this bold green number and yet I still haven’t acquired my first jumpsuit. Still a 2017 style goal.

I fell down a Crazy Ex-Girlfriend song hole on YouTube a couple of weeks ago and it was wonderful and after reading the panel highlights I am now even more excited for season 3. It feels like Sonequa Martin-Green is giving me that look because she knows I’m gonna moan about the color of her shoes, which I was going to. But also red Louboutin soles are great for sitting down shots because generally you will see that flash of color.

Also that floral dress is delightful and I would love to know what shade/brand of lipstick she is wearing.
Speaking of red soles and Hayley Atwell demonstrates my point perfectly at the Starz panel for the Howard’s End miniseries. A co-production with the BBC and this cast is fabulous; I will follow Atwell wherever she goes and Matthew Macfadyen and Tracey Ullman definitely make this an enticing project.

There is of course another very famous version of Howard’s End and while I’m not a huge Merchant Ivory fan it will be interesting to see if the mini-series can step out of shadow of the 1992 Oscar winning film. Girlfriend Experience co-creator Amy Seimetz shows how a bold color pump can brighten up any outfit and I’m very into the whole shirt buttoned all the way up thing at the moment. And of course ladysuits.First of all I think this shot is pretty funny in that it looks like Ioan Gruffudd and Joanne Froggatt are being proclaimed as liars.

This is of course the name of their new Sundance show and I also love that Froggatt’s red Johanna Ortiz frock is giving off serious dancing lady emoji vibes. Gruffudd scrubs up very well and his beard game is strong. Also I miss his show where he couldn’t die. That was fun.The women of Top of the Lake: China Girl did not coordinate as well Nicole Kidman’s other co-stars from The Beguiled and this covers the spectrum of panel attire with Elisabeth Moss leaning into pattern delights in Camilla and Marc, Gwendoline Christie wearing menswear inspired cool, Nicole Kidman doing her usual ruffled frock thing and Alice Englert leaning maybe a little too casual.

Best of the 2017 Winter TCA Panel and Party Style (So Far)

Award season and the Golden Globes are not the only place for super stylish outfits this month/week as the 2017 winter TCA press tour is fully underway. The really great thing about this occurring during award season is getting to see outfits that are more like the things I would actually wear. Don’t get me wrong; I love the grand and opulent gowns that we get to see on the red carpet at this time of year, but it is also fun to mix things up. See also why I cannot wait for all the knitwear and coats from Sundance.

There are patterns aplenty and this is one trend that was lacking at the Golden Globes, but because of the whole panel element there isn’t always standing shots so some outfits don’t get their full moment to shine.The whole TGIT block got pushed back a week, but we have some sartorial delights from the cast of Scandal with Kerry Washington looking stunning in a floral Prabal Gurung frock and super cute purple ribbon Gianvito Rossi shoes.

Bellamy Young is also crushing it in patterns with leopard print really making a comeback (see also Keri Russell at the Globes) and pairing this bold skirt with a red short sleeve sweater adds a fiery elegance to the whole look.After The Good Wife ended in disappointment I was pretty sure I didn’t need any more from this world, but it turns out it was maybe just Alicia Florrick’s story that I was done with as with every promo and interview about this spinoff my excitement levels grow.

Plus more Diane (and a Diane who is allowed to swear) is everything I need right now. Same goes for Cush Jumbo and it will be good to see the super stylish Lucca Quinn step out from her ‘get-a-grip’ friend role.

Also this Carolina Herrera pink dress is super cute and Jumbo looks amazing both on the show in costume Daniel Lawson’s choices and IRL.And the full Good Fight cast with the creators. I am so ready. Sometimes an abstract print is what you need as Condola Rashad from Billions is demonstrating; it is like palm trees meets Pollack. At The Path session Michelle Monaghan is several levels of mesmerizing in this Mary Katrantzou frock delivering on both pattern and sparkle.

Dramatic shoulders at the Twin Peaks revival panel and Mädchen Amick delivers in La Petite Robe by Chiara Boni with bonus red lip. Confession time – I have still not watched Twin Peaks even though I got the DVD two Christmases ago and I am hanging my head in so much shame. This will be rectified by Sunday, May 21 when it returns to TV. April is going to be a great TV month with the last season of The Leftovers and the return of iZombie on April 4. And this is one good looking and super stylish cast with A+ suit choices and a fabulous Yigal Azrouel frock for Rose McIver. I would also love to know what point she is making here.Another confession – I have not read The Handmaid’s Tale, but I did buy it this week and it is next on my To Read pile after I am done with the short story detective anthology I’m reading right now. It is a book I am of course aware of and that it is very timely despite coming out over thirty years ago.

The cast is also incredible and this shot of Samira Wiley and Elisabeth Moss is delightful.Switching from pants to a dress and on the same Hulu day Elisabeth Moss gives me collar and color envy in this fabulous Ulyana Sergeenko frock. It was also announced on Saturday that Alexis Bledel is in The Handmaid’s Tale and hopefully she will be better received in this than Rory Gilmore’s writing career in the Gilmore Girl’s revival.

Great dress and I’m so happy Bledel’s shoe/manicure choice is summer when her dress is winter. Got to mix those seasons.Sometimes a black jumpsuit does the trick as Yvonne Strahovski demonstrates.Tara Lynne Barr is here to remind me that I still need to finish watching the last season of Casual and also that red boots are fabulous. Another good example of an outfit I would actually wear.As with Yvonne Strahovski’s black jumpsuit, Ari Graynor goes classic in a black sweater and pencil skirt (further research on Twitter revealed this wasn’t a sweater dress like I hoped it might be) as she talks “I’m Dying Up Here.”Conor Leslie of new Fox show Shots Fired delivers on winter botanicals and this dress skirts the right side of sheer (yeah there is one), but really it is her lipstick that is giving me so much life right now. Much to my joy Leighton Meester is returning to TV in March for Fox’s time travel comedy Making History and in jumpsuit news I am enjoying the turtleneck twist combined with the gold studs; this feels very business but you can also go to the club after.
