Christine Baranski Talks ‘The Good Fight’ with Zac Posen for Interview Magazine

1 Feb

Spin-offs in TV can be very hit (Frasier) or miss (Joey) and it makes sense to use characters who still have plenty of story to tell. With The Good Wife it became very clear in the final season that there wasn’t much more to say about Alicia Florrick and when they announced the seventh would be the end of the road during last year’s Super Bowl it felt like a relief.

Now comes The Good Fight which will see the continuation of characters that do have more story to tell such as Diane Lockhart and Lucca Quinn; I couldn’t be more thrilled especially with each new promo and interview. christine-baranskiSpeaking to Zac Posen for Interview Magazine, Christine Baranski goes into depth about what we can expect from the new show as well as her feeling about playing a character like Diane Lockhart for such a long period:

“I said to my manager, because I was in my fifties, “It would be really great to do a dramatic role and play someone elegant and intelligent. There aren’t that many roles out there, but …” I have a kind of remarkable ability to, for want of a better phrase, get what I want. I kind of project. I guess it’s called dreaming.”

In terms of the current political climate/shitstorm* the pilot for The Good Fight was written before the election and they had filmed some of the pilot prior to this; including lines as if Hillary Clinton had won. Like a lot of us the Kings and Baranski thought this was a given “In fact, they wrote a line in the first episode where I announce that I’m retiring to the entire law firm at this beautiful, huge circular table, and I say that there are no more glass ceilings to break. I think that we’re going to have to loop it and they’re going to have to amend that line.” And Baranski reveals some details from the changed pilot (light spoilers ahead) explaining that we will see Diane watching the inauguration and how she feels distraught, but she is moving on with her life and then she loses everything financially. Her reputation also takes a very big hit.

*The Good Fight seems set up to tackle what is going on right now in this nightmare and I wonder how many rewrites they have done in the last week and a half.

This parallels with Alicia Florrick’s story at the start of The Good Wife and how she is finding it hard to get hired (as we saw with Alicia in “A Few Words“). Baranski explains that the only place that will hire her is Chicago’s only African-American firm “So this show will have the opportunity to address not only the feminist issues, ageism, and sexism, but it’s going to address racism in the workplace.” I view this latter aspect with caution as The Good Wife had a habit of exploring racism in the workplace on a very surface level and then dropping it. Hopefully the Kings have learned from experience and will go deeper. And I also hope this is a sign that Lucca Quinn will be just as front and center.

It is not surprising in an interview conducted by Zac Posen that fashion is a topic that comes up especially as Diane Lockhart is one of the best dressed characters on TV (the statement necklaces!) and Baranski always great IRL style.

“The power of fashion, and the power of what you present visually. Women would come up and ask me about a piece of jewelry, a brooch. People are really watching. And Michelle [King] came by. She loves fashion. She will wear Nina Ricci, and she just loves Alexander McQueen. She said, “The one thing we’re not giving up, even though you’re going bankrupt, is the way you dress, because that’s what women expect.” My first fitting was fantastic. Her fashion evolution—there aren’t a lot of power suits, there are a lot of dresses.”

Interview Magazine always gives great photo shoots and this is no exception. From the sequins and sunglasses rooftop delight in the first photo above to the leopard print charms of this one.christine-baranski-interviewWith The Good Fight there will be a slight change in style “because of her evolution where she’s about to retire, there’s a whole softening of her look.” As long as there are still brooches, necklaces and blazers I’m all good.

How Baranski escapes in real life is to head to her house on the lake and how do I get an invite to this?!

“I have had many famous actors on my dock, because we put wood in the fire pit and bottles of wine, and Cherry Jones and Allison Janney and Mark Rylance and his wife and lots of nude swimming. I got Meryl there.”

Circling back to the kinds of characters you get when you hit a ‘certain age’ and how she thinks this is changing in terms of both her career and others:

“I’m really having my cake and eating it, but what I mean by beauty as a shelf life, in terms of a woman’s life in front of a camera, you can be that beautiful woman. I do think the rules are changing. Witness Isabelle Huppert and her amazing career and this latest movie, but what I’m getting at is if your career is not predicated on just your physical beauty, you’re able to project a sophistication. You can take sophisticated to your grave. You can be that worldly woman, that woman who looks beautiful dressed up. Diane Lockhart walks in a room and she commands space.”

Oh wait! Now we got #murraybartlett

Welcome to the Looking feels portion of this week’s TV Insta and as the movie starts shooting this week most of the cast are back in San Francisco. It is bittersweet that this charming show is coming to an end so soon, but at least there will be one last final hurrah instead of just getting canceled into oblivion.

It’s not just the romantic pairings that I am heavily invested in and I want all the good things for long time besties Dom and Doris.

Back to the beginning and a super cute shot that is reinforcing my confused shipper feelings. Never have I gone back and forth this much on who I want a character to end up with.

Last week’s episode of You’re the Worst answered the Gretchen mystery in a way that managed to make me want to curl up and sob while still delivering on the laughs, which is an incredibly hard line to walk. Kether Donohue posted a tribute to Aya Cash’s stunning performance giving further insight into this episode and nails what makes this such a special show. Plus this photo delivers on Cash as my sunglasses queen.

And this is just super cute. Plus there are those Ray Bans again – get on my face. Sunday Funday Halloween tonight!

Dream aesthetic ahoy from Holly Taylor wearing what looks to be an excellent sweater and living the food dream on the set of The Americans. I’ve said it before, but it is easy to buy that Taylor could be Keri Russell’s daughter from her hair alone.

It is also easy to believe that Taraji P. Henson and Jussie Smollett could be mother/son from their excellent matching resting bitch face.

Family selfie! #janethevirgin

More impressive family casting similarities and this super smiley selfie, while hanging out in Jane’s favorite store is far too adorable.

All the heart eye emojis because I have strong feelings about bathroom hangouts both fictional and real life.

Ideal cute dungarees outfit ahoy from Jenny Slate.

These might not quite go with the spectacular dragon necklace and the other costume embellishments Daenerys wears on Game of Thrones, but they could hide quite nicely under her blonde locks.

👹my lil crushes👹 #season5 #newgirl

A post shared by Nasim Pedrad (@nasimpedrad) on

Nasim Pedrad will be back on New Girl next season much to my delight and the guys seem various amounts of pose happy.

It is hard to tell where Will Forte’s hair ends and Kristen Schaal’s begins in this intense The Last Man on Earth group shot.

There’s a lot Fitz has done wrong on Scandal, but his suits are always impeccable and designer Zac Posen is also a fan.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 Feb

A big pre-Oscar weekend style edition of “Out of the Box” with NYFW runway watching style, Costume Designers Guild Awards, Vanity Fair celebrating Young Hollywood and the Essence Black Women in Hollywood event.

Natasha Lyonne and Nicki MinajNicki Minaj and Natasha Lyonne at the Alexander Wang runway show this week pulling their best front row DGAF faces.

Allison WilliamsAllison Williams’ style leans towards the classic and she looks at home in matching Spring 2015 Michael Kors floral crop top and skirt at the Michael Kors runway show. With the current New York weather I suddenly turn into my mother and get concerned about how cold she must be,

Christina HendricksA super sophisticated look for Christina Hendricks at Zac Posen in Zac Posen. That is an excellent shade of red lipstick and I’m already getting weepy about the end of Mad Men whenever I see one of the cast members.

Alison WrightDitching the 80s frumpy sweaters for something with an air of relaxed cool at the Tracy Reese show is Alison Wright from The Americans and I am particularly eyeing up her necklace. Wright is also demonstrating how you can do cold weather legs and still look fashion ready.

Kiernan ShipkaMoving on to the Costume Designers Guild Award and Kiernan Shipka is a vision in Oscar de la Renta. This lady is incredible. Also *sob* (see earlier Christina Hendricks remark).

Nicole BeharieOf course we know that actresses are not going to mirror the style of the characters they play (see Alison Wright from The Americans), however as I am so used to seeing Nicole Beharie in a range of leather jackets, jeans and boots on Sleepy Hollow this color/pattern Luis Antonio explosion at the Vanity Fair Young Hollywood event is a fun change-up.

Uzo AdubaThe OITNB ladies have been doing the award and party circuit (deservedly so) and I might have the opposite problem when Netflix gifts us with the next season readjusting to seeing them in their prison beige. Uzo Aduba is a picture of sophistication at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon in this pretty floral L.K. Bennett dress and orange Stuart Weitzman heels.

Laverne CoxPleats are a clothing weakness for me and Laverne Cox does understated elegance which is perfect for this daytime Essence event wearing a Whistles skirt with a Theory top.

New York Fashion Week: Best of the Runway Watching Looks Part 2

10 Sep

New York Fashion Week continues to draw a plethora of famous faces to the front rows of runway shows and this gives us a whole lot of new looks to pour over. This is the second “Best of the Runway Watching” column and you can find the OITNB cast heavy first take here.

The Alice + Olivia show was a particularly big draw for TV/film starlets with a lot of them wearing items that have just hit Alicia + Olivia stores/online. We will be linking to those as you might want to add them to your wish list.

NYFW YvonneAt Naeem Khan the front row is all intricate pattern and bold designs much like the intricate beading and color on display on the runway. All decked out in Naeem Khan are Jamie Chung (she has been a heavy presence this week and she’s the only person to feature on both ‘Best of’ lists), Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Yvonne Strahovski, Connie Britton, and Padma Lakshmi. I am especially drawn to Strahovski’s stunning blue and yellow kaleidoscope-print frock and of course Connie Britton in general.

Kiernan Shipka in pantsIt’s a rare sight to see Kiernan Shipka at an event in pants, but here she is at Zac Posen in another sartorial delight. The structure of the top is unusual in its angles and yet it works with the patterned detail of her bottom half.

Kiernan ShipkaAt Tory Burch, Kiernan Shipka wore something more in line with her usual red carpet styling in a cute floral frock. Even though it’s entirely age appropriate I do have to remind myself that she is only 14 years old and then I feel all protective; Hollywood be good to her.

Anna ChlumskyIt might be due to the colors and pattern, but there is a little something Flamenco dancer about Anna Chlumsky’s outfit at Zac Posen. I’m swung by the texture of the red sweater (SO excited for sweater season) and Chlumsky’s striking red lip color. Plus she’ s pretty great so that helps me get passed the aspects of the outfit that are less pleasing.

Willow ShieldsThe rest of the “Best of” entries come from the Alice + Olivia event; up first is another teen delight with Willow Shields (Prim from The Hunger Games) striking a pose worthy of Wonder Woman in a very cute ballerina button down. The black and white patterned shoes peaking out are a cool touch.

Lynsey FonsecaThis might be my favorite from the Alice + Olivia clothes on display at this show and Lyndsy Fonseca deserves a dress this pretty after being subjected to the longest tale of how someone met their spouse (Fonseca is one of Ted’s kids on HIMYM). The bold green jacquard design also has the all important pocket detail.

Katie ChungAnother dress you could wear for day/night events and the only thing not quite working with Katie Chang’s outfit is her meh shoe color. The gold and black design of this gown and the cinched in waist make this another standout from Alice + Olivia.

Jamie ChungJamie Chung pairs an edgy leather cropped fitting tank  with the super girly lip covered skirt and scarlet ankle strap heals. It’s a fun, flirty outfit and I’m half expecting to see this skirt show up on either The Mindy Project or New Girl.

Holland RodenDoing classic black and white is Teen Wolf’s Holland Roden, adding flare with a pair of winking heels. Yep her shoes have faces on them and they are pretty awesome (and maybe 1% creepy).

Jennifer MorrisonA few weeks ago I went into a ridiculous amount of stores (10+) looking for a red belt like the one Jennifer Morrison is wearing and I did not find a single thin red belt. Luckily I got one for my birthday otherwise I would be giving this photo all the coveting side eye. I’m glad I don’t have to do this as it’s a really lovely outfit and another chance to see the red heels that I’m now after.

Jessica Lowndes A+OThis is one ornate gown complete with tassels, lace, beading and taffeta; while it might overwhelm the wearer, Jessica Lowndes looks resplendent.

Best of the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards Red Carpet

3 Jun

The annual CFDA Fashion Awards were held at the Lincoln Center in New York yesterday (June 2) celebrating those who have made an outstanding contribution to American fashion. Actors, models and singers attended the event dressed in creations designed by the winners and nominees and here is a look at our favorites from this event.

Greta Gerwig and Zac PosenGreta Gerwig poses with designer Zac Posen in a stunning long sleeve tangerine dress by Zac Posen and while her How I Met Your Dad project is no more (and really Gerwig was the main reason I would have watched this show) I am very excited to see what is next for her. I hope this bad TV experience won’t put Gerwig off future television projects, though I expect network TV has been soured for now.

SolangeSolange looks super sexy in shimmery silver Calvin Klein Collection, which is giving off Old Hollywood vibes with a dash of ’70s disco. I am super into bright pink lip color at the moment and this pop of color gives this look a contemporary feel.

Coco RochaBringing the drama is Coco Rocha in a Christian Siriano gown (and posing with the designer and I’m momentarily mesmerized by his shoes). This is a stunning and elegant design and the embroidered monochrome skirt is enhanced by the off the shoulder sleeved black bodice. Add a cigarette holder and this has Audrey Hepburn flashes.

Liya KebedeWearing a white Wes Gordon shirt and a skirt that makes me think of chemistry class (I might be the only who sees this print and pictures atoms and molecules) in the best possible way is model Liya Kebede. This is one of those looks that is super stylish and effortless; it’s happens to be on the least showy end and yet it is also one of the standouts.

Busy PhilipsBusy Philipps looks stunning and statuesque in a red Honor halter dress complete with a custom Irene Neuwirth necklace – Neuwirth won for accessory design – and matching ring. The ruffled neck sets this dress apart from other red gowns like this that tend to go for a bow option (see Nicole Kidman and Emma Stone).

Brie Larson DVFI have loved this gold star print Diane von Furstenberg dress since I first saw it on the runway back in February (it sadly didn’t fit in with this Alana Bloom fantasy costuming piece) and I’m so glad to see how good Brie Larson looks in this frock.

Keri RussellWhile this might look a tad like a mint-green sheet has found its way onto this Rosie Assoulin gown, I really like this ethereal Grecian touch and it goes beyond just another plain monochrome getup. Keri Russell tends to stick with simple designs and this is still in her usual wheelhouse with an added embellishment and she’s pulling this look off.
