Out of the Box: Look of the Week – A Black Panther Special

2 Feb

An early contender for best red carpet of 2018; my expectations were set to high for the Black Panther promo tour because the core cast always bring sartorial excellence, but they delivered and then some at the LA premiere on Monday night.* The red carpet was a regal purple, the theme of African royalty was interpreted in a variety of stunning ways. A celebration of all things Black pride, including a lot of nods to African heritage through dress, accessories and hair; something that runs through the costume design of the film.

*I’m late with this post as I’ve had stomach flu this week (fun!) so I wanted to give a dedicated “Out of the Box” rather than select a few images. So there will be two “Out of the Box” columns today. Scrolling through these photos and the Black Panther reactions definitely helped make me feel a bit better.

Plus a couple of other appearances from the Black Panther cast this week. And Happy Black History Month! Technically this red carpet was in January, but this post is in February as is the release of the film. In the color of royalty; a true fashion queen! Lupita Nyong’o is a vision in custom Atelier Versace. The gold metal bodice ups the regal levels and as per stylist Micaela Erlanger “There’s definitely a nod to her warrior character Nakia here, without being costumey. It’s a really glamorous take on our vision and it’s very fierce, certainly.” I would definitely agree with this sentiment. And because Lupita always picks a dress that looks good in motion. Yellow fringe is not an easy look to pull off, but Angela Bassett looks born to wear canary Naeem Khan. Lots of bold gold accessories add to the look, as well as nodding to the heritage that Black Panther celebrates. At the Black Panther junket, Angela Bassett put another fantastic spin on the bold accessory/bold jumpsuit theme. It is going to get a bit much if I keep using the word queen, but Janelle Monáe is serving up the royal dress code in a kufi cap that looks like a crown and tribal inspired necklace. The Christian Siriano gown, complete with ruffled sleeves is perfect for the occasion. Look for more Monáe in the other “Out of the Box” this week. Pleats! You know I have strong feelings about pleats and they are all good. Issa Rae is doing a great job of showing off the colorful aspect of her Rosie Assoulin frock. Danai Gurira brings the ruffled drama in pink and black Viktor & Rolf. Gurira plays Okoye, the head of the Dora Milaje—the all-women secret service agents for Black Panther—and her character isn’t one for wearing frocks (even if she ends up having to wear one). I spoke to costume designer Ruth E. Carter recently and I am looking forward to sharing what she said about the Dora Milaje and the rest of the costumes with you soon.  And at Jimmy Kimmel Live! Gurira wore a fabulous Diane Von Furstenberg red and silver geometric print dress that I now also want to see on The Good FightOne of the main talking points from the early reactions is that Letitia Wright’s Shuri (T’challa’s sister) is a highlight and I cannot wait to see her in action. Wearing a very pretty Bibhu Mohapatra floral gown that is a sheer delight rather than a nightmare. Now to some of the men of the evening; Daniel Kaluuya mixed his Ugandan heritage with his British. Wearing a velvet Burberry blazer over a traditional kanzu is a powerful look. Here comes the king! Chadwick Boseman looks like royalty in gold floral Emporio Armani.David Oyelowo always steps up on the red carpet, this is certainly no different. Wearing traditional African dashiki dress (and wife, Jessica also went strong on the pattern front) paired with Louboutin loafers shows how to mix designer with heritage. A visual feast. What a suit! Bold orange Gucci and Donald Glover continues his fabulous suit reign. Michael B. Jordan’s nod to the African royalty theme is more subtle, but the double-breasted Calvin Klein suit with gold collar tips and another pair of Louboutin loafers to drool over is just as effective.Sterling K. Brown is working that black turtleneck look while wife Ryan Michelle Bathe goes for a short pattern explosion in Kutula. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter showed that she doesn’t just make other people look good. Carter also summed up the vibe of the night to USA Today:

“I was hoping for this. All of the award shows I was watching on TV, I was like, ‘Oh, you wait until Black Panther’ red carpet rolls around. It’s a celebration.”Yara Shahidi’s Etro gown is an ethereal wonder; the embroidery and tassels nod to the occasion as does her natural hair. Shahidi is a regular fixture here and this is a new favorite look.Emily V. Gordon’s metallic Dress the Population frock and t-bar heels is also a new favorite ensemble in an award season filled with great looks. Kumail Nanjiani subtle check suit is bringing the purple. Sequins continue to be big and Cobie Smulders is bang on trend in Markarian.Ending this incredible red carpet event with the man of the hour. Director Ryan Coogler is set to deliver something very special and he nodded to the heritage that was being celebrated through a print scarf. And Taika Waititi went the purple accessories route. Seriously, I am a few days late but I couldn’t not dedicate an entire post to this celebration.

Best of the 2017 Tony Awards Red Carpet

12 Jun

Time for the Tony Awards or the final letter you need to get to spell out EGOT. It was a particularly hot day in NYC yesterday and probably not the best weather occasion for tuxedos and long heavy gowns. But the show must go on (I’m sorry) and the red carpet with its rose filled living wall did not disappoint.

For the full winners list head here.Last year Cynthia Erivo won for The Color Purple and she returns looking triumphant in a plunging custom beaded CG gown. This was Cobie Smulders first Tony Awards and she knocks it out of the park (or theater) in a stunning print Schiaparelli that mixes patterns while giving a fresh take on florals.Chrissy Teigen is giving me so many Art Deco feelings in custom Pamella Roland and in personal news I will be attempting to make some things from her cookbook this week.

Also, John Legend is working a larger bow tie and is now only an Emmy away from an EGOT after last night. This is fucking fabulous. Rachel Bloom hanging out with Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole; living her best life.Sutton Foster is also giving great plunging beaded black gown in Christian Siriano and the rose wall really is the best dramatic backdrop. It is impossible for me to see Mary Beth Peil and not think of both Jackie Florrick and Grams; this might be the Tonys and yet I will always view it through the lens of TV, because I am the worst. And she looks amazing here.

If only this was the year Michelle Williams was nominated because that would be the ultimate Dawson’s Creek reunion. Wearing what looks like the most comfortable dress is Jenna Lyons in snake print Voutsa x Paul Marlowe and I am enthusiastic about lounge wear adjacent formal attireDavid Oyelowo is always a GQMF and at the Tonys this is no different. Not only is his suit/pocket square game strong, but those embroidered slippers take it to the next level. Oh, Hello lands on Netflix tomorrow (Tuesday 13) and while I am far from a Broadway expert, watching this show while on honeymoon in New York last September is the most fun I have ever had in a theater. Safe to say I am looking forward to seeing it again and not being jet lagged this time.

Also John Mulaney and Nick Kroll look rather dashing, but I am missing their particular brand of Gil and George style. Elijah and Dorota: the spinoff we not only deserve, but also need.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Best of 2015 Part 1

24 Dec

We have written about a lot of outfits both on and off screen this year and the 2015 Best Of series turns its attention toward our Look of the Week column, which has featured a whole host of red carpet appearances, magazine covers/editorial styling and many other sartorially infused events. Here is the first part of our “Out of the Box” rundown showcasing our favorites from a very stylish year.

Best Magazine Cover

Taraji P Henson WTaraji P. Henson has appeared on a lot of covers this year and this Diana Ross inspired shoot for W had my jaw on the floor and it is why this issue is still sat on my coffee table. What I love about this image is that it is so simple and yet so incredibly sexy in a way that is so far from Cookie (who is also incredibly sexy).

Best Cape

Ruth WilsonAt the summer TCA CBS, CW and Showtime party Ruth Wilson wore a stunning caped flamingo Valentino frock and had me dreaming of sunshine and sipping on a margarita.

Best Gingham

Lizzy CaplanFor her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Lizzy Caplan not only looked super summer cool in a black and white gingham Lela Rose dress, but she also brought up the WB with fellow guest Jon Hamm. Switching out Birkenstocks for black pumps from the backstage walk to the show also showcases how to dress up/down this outfit.

Most on Point Dress

Kate MaraWhen the movie you are promoting is set in space it might be a tad on the nose to wear a dress this intergalactic, but I say go with it and Kate Mara did just that in this stunning Valentino number.

Best Leather Jacket

Olivia WildeOlivia Wilde has been a regular in these parts for the last few months rocking a variety of styles and this leather jacket over floral Valentino (a brand doing very well in this end of year listicle) gives this an edge over the other outfit faves. Trusty red pumps have been worn on multiple occasions by Wilde and work with everything from 70s inspired to color blocking.

Best Leather Pants

Keri Russell Seth MeyersKeri Russell favors leather in all forms whether skirts, jumpsuits or pants and as her Late Night with Seth Meyers ensemble demonstrates she looks cool as fuck mixing a show tee with heels, black blazer and these leather pants. The pop of lip color gives an extra kick and I am always thankful that makeup artist Tina Turnbow shares what brands she uses (and I was very lucky to be gifted this lipstick earlier this year).

Best Playsuit

Kristen StewartPlaysuits can be hard to pull off, but Kristen Stewart is effortless chic in sequinned Zuhair Murad with legs going for miles. At the time I mentioned how much I enjoyed the fact that she lost the heels and walked most the red carpet barefoot and I still do. A lady after my own heart.

Best Jumpsuit

Rebecca FergusonRebecca Ferguson was a revelation in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and she also stood out at the London Premiere in this stunning DVF Jumpsuit. This was just before I wore my very own DVF dress at my soon to be brother-in-law’s wedding and I was very excited about all of this (as you can tell).

Best LadySuit

Amandla Stenberg#LadySuitWatch2015 has been TV Ate My Wardrobe’s most used hashtag this year and when I saw Amandla Stenberg’s Dazed photoshoot in which she rocks this look I pretty much screamed in delight. Stenberg has been killing it all over social media with her super smart and observant takes on everything from cultural appropriation to how teenagers get discredited for their opinions just because of their age. I can’t wait to see what she does in 2016.

Best Floral Suit

Michael B Jordan VogueThis year has cemented the notion that Michael B. Jordan can wear suits in any color or pattern from Vivienne Westwood plaid to textured D&G at the Met Gala. And he graced the pages of Vogue in another D&G floral suit; this time showing he could work something even bolder.

Best Polka Dots and Stripes

Emma StoneThis is pretty much my platonic ideal of any outfit.

Best Co-Star Pockets, Patterns and Giggles

Maisie and SophieThey haven’t spent any time on screen together since season 1 and photos like this of Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams have me longing for the day the Stark sisters will be reunited and then burn the place to the fucking ground. Thankfully due to all the Game of Thrones press commitments we get plenty of delightful off screen moments like this. Clothing wise Maisie Williams has pledged allegiance to dresses with pockets and Sophie Turner is doing strong patterned work here at the GoT premiere.

Best Sweater – Part 1

Matt BomerThere is nothing not adorable about this Matt Bomer look.

Best Sweater – Part 2

Cobie SmuldersIf there is one sweater I coveted more than any other in 2015 it is this Coach space themed knitwear as worn by many including Cobie Smulders at Sundance.

Best Front Row Watching at NYFW

Natasha Lyonne and Nicki MinajTwo Nickis – one real, one fictional – at the Alexander Wang NYFW runway show back in February and I am always fond of the random groupings at fashion events.

Best Fashion Campaign

Samira WileyA campaign which still makes me gasp all these months later and Samira Wiley is crushing it for Christian Siriano.

Best Lady Hangout

Broad City premiereSquad Goals is one phrase which has been used to an exhausting degree in 2015 (by myself included), but yeah I’m going to have to use it here because this is an ultimate lady hangout situation.

Stay tuned for Part 2 next week and Happy Holidays!

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

19 Feb

Saturday Night Live celebrated its 40th anniversary with a 3-hour plus show including many famous faces and it was well documented behind the scenes thanks to numerous Instagram posts. This is a SNL “Behind the Insta-Scenes” special with shots from during the show, in the audience and at the after party.

Maya Rudolph was on stage with Prince during that performance and I like to think this giddy shot is a delayed reaction to this. This also sums up how I feel about Maya Rudolph; she is magic.

This is one of many photos Taran Killam shared (and they’re worth checking out) from his SNL 40 experience and it is right in the midst of the action.

And here is an adorable one from when it was all over.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

30 Jan

Coats, tights, sweaters and boots aplenty this week with the Sundance Film Festival style. Plus party dresses, magazine covers and a slightly different approach to walking in the snow.

Greta GerwigAt the Mistress America premiere Greta Gerwig does the cute patterned dress, tights and ankle boots thing with aplomb.

Greta Gerwig SundanceAnd because I couldn’t choose which outfit I liked best here is a Greta Gerwig’s slightly more casual look for the Sundance portrait session with more incredible boots and an animal print top. Gerwig co-wrote Mistress America with Noah Baumbach and as Frances Ha was my favorite film of 2013 I have high hopes for this one. Kicking things off nicely in charming style.

Kathryn HahnTicking all the boxes – coat, dress, boots, tights – is Kathryn Hahn and I love Sundance fashion because we get to see a less flashy form of movie promoting style. And I love Kathryn Hahn.

Jessica WilliamsJessica Williams works the layering and an excellent pair of brown boots (pattern socks plus) in her portrait for People, Places, Things.

Mark and Jay DuplassCute brothers alert with Mark and Jay Duplass at the premiere for The Overnight (which I am looking forward to for many reasons). I have seen photos of Mark Duplass from this Sundance wearing a Henley in three different colors and it is a signature piece I am all for. They aren’t just for the guys on the CW.

Cobie SmuldersThis Coach sweater caught my eye back when I wrote a Robyn sweater wish list (pausing to take a moment to wonder once again where Robyn has gone) and now a Robin of a different spelling and show is wearing it. Cobie Smulders looks casual cool at her portrait session for Unexpected.

Keri Russell heelsThis might not be the best kind of footwear for the weather, but snow or not I would find it a challenge to walk in any stilettos. Luckily, Keri Russell is much more coordinated in this department as she heads to the Today Show and this is a super stylish (if not a little chilly) outfit. Very into the coat draped over the shoulders look and the color of this outerwear. Also eyeing up the divine floral Victoria Beckham skirt.

Maisie Williams EW partyThis week Maisie Williams championed dresses with pockets (which are my favorite kind of dresses) and at the Entertainment Weekly pre-SAG bash she wore another very cute pocketed ensemble in Reem Juan.

IMG_1224Bust is on a roll with putting ladies we love on the cover (and this is one reason why I am a subscriber) and now Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer are in the spotlight. The editorial has a Thelma & Louise theme and if you were wondering then yes I am still laughing about this week’s episode.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

4 Apr

PaleyFest is over and we’re keeping a focus on red carpet events with this edition of Out of the Box as a How I Met Your Mother star balances the series finale week with the release of Captain America: The Winter SoldierMad Men has its seventh season premiere and Rashida Jones celebrates a new writing venture.

Cobie Smulders Captain AmericaCobie Smulders looks like she knows how pissed off you are about the How I Met Your Mother finale at the Captain America premiere and putting aside all those feelings momentarily – I’m a very casual viewer and I’m annoyed by that ending – to bask in this fantastic red carpet look. The navy blue asymmetrical Sportmax gown throws in peplum and plunge detail that together look super elegant. Almost bonus points for the fantastic clutch and earrings, losing those points as she could do with another accessory or two. Smulders nails the role of Maria Hill once again and this Captain America sequel lets the female characters be good at their jobs, in appropriate non cleavy costuming and they don’t fall down the ‘damsel in distress’ incredibly lazy trope. All of these things made me very happy indeed, more of this please Marvel.

Mad Men castAs with the four women of Mad Men featured last week – this time Jon Hamm and January Jones enter the mix – there are many different style choices on display and I kinda love all of them. Kiernan Shipka continues to be on point and age appropriate in a metallic floral long sleeved, but super funky Nina Ricci frock. Also working the metallic angle is Christina Hendricks in a Wes Gordon silver skirt, paired to perfection with a simple but elegant black blouse.

The current and former Mrs Draper, Jessica Paré and January Jones are working the fashion forward angle; Paré rocking Antonio Berardi which for some reason made me think of the kind of gown Johanna in Catching Fire would have preferred to symbolize a tree. Jones is in Roksanda Ilincic and the bold gold belting detail brings it all together, not so sure about the side braid for this event. It’s a softer look for Jones who has a habit of going severe on the red carpet; maybe she’s less intense when it’s a Mad Men event rather than an awards show.

Elisabeth Moss has opted for an Alexander McQueen skirt with a super high daring thigh slit and while she looks pretty rock and roll, swapping the dramatically dark eyes for red lip color would really set this look alight. Jon Hamm’s blue suit makes a change from the influx of grey that has been dominating red carpets recently, but the women are the ones who stand out. This cast is still one of the best dressed and I can’t wait for all the costuming treats this year as we head into polyester and clashing patterns territory.

Rashida JonesRashida Jones is at event celebrating her new column for Glamour magazine (she is one busy lady) and this Adeam dress perfectly straddles the party/professional line. The shell pattern adds whimsy to the look and the silver heels help make this outfit pop, as does the dash of pink lipstick.
