Full Disclosure on The Good Wife: The Rules of Being The Presidential Candidate’s Wife

30 Nov

For someone who has known Alicia for as long as Eli has on The Good Wife, he is an expert in how to push her buttons and not in a good way. There has always been a bit of a push/pull between these two characters with Eli trying to work the best angle for the campaign while being more than aware that Alicia isn’t just going to drop everything and say yes. Some of this has been discovered the hard way and he knows better than anyone not to try and use the Florrick kids in any capacity without checking with their mother beforehand. It gets a little murky when Alicia’s love life comes into play and he has definitely overstepped his bounds long before “Discovery” with both Will and Finn. When Ruth comes to him regarding her Jason fears he does what Eli does and pisses Alicia off; ending the episode with a wordless reply and a door getting shut in his face.

The Good Wife 7.09 AliciaEli has intimate knowledge of Alicia and Peter’s complicated relationship; the affairs that both of them have had, their living situation and even their most recent hook-up. It is actually a very bizarre set-up when you consider all of this and when he tells Courtney that you have to be obsessed with your candidate he is skimming on the thorough and kinda creepy details. Okay the word “obsessed” has those connotations and he is maybe one step away from having a photo collage wall, except that wall is in his mind and files that they gather on the candidate and all their associates.

It is why it comes as a surprise to both Ruth and Eli that he missed the Jason thing (he has seen Jason, right?!). Ruth notices straight away and the way the camera lingers as Jason shows Alicia something on his phone and she puts on his glasses might as well have been Ruth seeing them going at it in the hallway; she is viewing it through salacious smut goggles. AKA what a lot of the audience (myself included) wants to see happen. Please don’t let this be a repeat of the Finn Polmar non-affair.

The Good Wife 7.09 Jason and AliciaTo give Eli some credit, I guess he is very reluctant when asking these awkward questions and maybe (okay definitely) a little intimidated by Jason, who also happens to have no time for Eli’s not so subtle attempt in telling him to back off. Although it does work because Jason goes from grufty warmness to grufty at a distance and Alicia is pissed. She’s still making homemade margs (and getting better) and alcohol is required to deal with this level of interference from Eli especially when he is giving his rules speech. It also doesn’t help that when he mentions hotel bars all I can think of is the season 2 finale and Will. And now I’m feeling a whole lot of things.

There are ulterior motives at play and full disclosure is not something Eli is offering as he is using the Courtney funded Alicia focus group as a way to see if she is a viable candidate for a Senate position, when Courtney just wanted to see if the Saint Alicia brand had been resurrected for this presidency campaign. Eli has moved beyond his sabotage plan, but the self interest level is still at play. One tactic he employs which is so dumb for everyone involved is sending Nora on an interference mission. When he sells it to her it sounds like it could be something which has a lot more value than cockblocking and after one awkward interruption Nora is no longer up for serving as Eli’s stooge.

Nora happens to interrupt a deep and meaningful about Jason’s previously uncomfortable life – flashback montage please – and now he likes to keep things simple. He is quickly learning that by spending time in Alicia’s orbit things are far from this state. Although he should have known that from the investigation he did on her and like Eli I don’t really buy his excuse of checking out his new boss. Alicia looks concerned by this discovery (drink because I just said the episode title) and it is unclear what she is going to do with this information. Probably start by drinking another margarita.

There are a couple of interesting Alicia costuming touches to note such as the leather and lace combo that comes after Eli’s chat; she certainly isn’t going to tone her wardrobe choices down and in fact this up the sex factor.

The Good Wife 7.09 Lucca and AliciaThe other thing is when she is filming her ‘wife of the candidate’ pieces she is wearing her very wifey pearls, which she then ditches for when she heads to court.

The Good Wife 7.09 Alicia Florrick The Good Wife 7.09 Alicia and LuccaOne person who doesn’t worry about pearls and politician’s wife associations is Diane who goes all out on her triple pearl necklace for court.

The Good Wife 7.09 Diane pearlsAnd I am definitely feeling this look both in the office and out on the street (I couldn’t pick which one I wanted to use so a double shot it is).

The Good Wife 7.09 Diane Lockhart - Copy The Good Wife 7.09 DianeLucca and Alicia are also both sporting fantastic outerwear and a whole lot of side eye.

The Good Wife 7.09 Lucca and Alicia ChumhumThe case this week has Alicia representing an old client with a new boss as Piper’s brother from Orange is the New Black is the new COO at Chumhum with Lockhart, Agos representing the opposition. This is a Canning case and they know it will look better with Lucca as part of the team because the case is about race, which she is obviously not so thrilled by. Somehow they find a way to have both sides win, but it leaves an unpleasant taste in the end because of a) what Alicia and Lucca had to do at the behest of the dude paying their bills (bury evidence) and b) Diane and Cary also kinda lost because the restaurant in question was failing before the app was launched.

We also get to hear Cary spout a whole lot of white male privilege and I’m not entirely sure if this was out of character or completely in line with what he actually thinks. Cary has been used so little this season it is hard to tell who he is in a post-Kalinda Good Wife as he was so defined by that relationship. Now he is going dancing with Lucca and I would be way more into this if there had been any sense of a build-up; they have gone from pretty much zero non-case based interactions to this in no steps at all.

This season is still trying to figure out exactly what it wants to be and as we near the halfway point it is a little concerning. With one episode left before the break (airing December 13) I hope it figures things out soon.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

27 Nov

A slightly quieter week what with it being Thanksgiving and all, but there are still plenty of end of year awards, talk show appearances and magazine covers delivering sartorial gifts. We’ve got ladysuits, fabulous frocks and a colorful spin on a classic item.

gillian AndersonBam! Gillian Anderson offering up a lesson in how to do simple and striking with a side order of super hot at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

Gwendoline ChristieMore accolades were dished out this week that also involved posing in front of green foliage at the 2015 British Fashion Awards. Gwendoline Christie gives a little taste of what we can expect from the highly anticipated Star Wars press tour killing it in Vivienne Westwood. I maybe bought the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar for this photo alone.

Victoria Beckham#LadySuitWatch2015 is almost at an end – don’t worry there will be a 2016 version – and Victoria Beckham does all black tailored chic at the British Fashion Awards with satin trim and lapels. It doesn’t quite top the leather lapels of Jessica Jones’ blazer in episode 5 of the new Netflix Marvel series of the same name, but runs a close second.

Krysten Ritter ladysuitSpeaking of which here is Jessica Jones herself; Krysten Ritter also entering the ladysuit fray in an impeccable Mugler white ensemble as she exits Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Krysten RitterSame day, different outfit and looking a little more like her Marvel character, except with a colorful twist on the choice of leather jacket.

Uzo Aduba Uptown magazineWhat a great cover shot from Uptown magazine of Uzo Aduba and I love how they’ve opted against the standard run of the mill smile or serious expression choice. The accompanying interview discusses Aduba’s Emmy wins, her very busy year and how she almost quit acting just before she landed Orange is the New Black. I am very glad she didn’t.

TV to be Thankful For: A Pre-End of Year List (of Sorts)

26 Nov

There is a lot of TV to be watched right now (#PeakTV) and like many I am in the process of compiling end of year lists (and as I have done in previous years I will be doing my ‘best of’ in a variety of ways) while trying to remember everything that I have watched this year. So this is a preview of what is to come in the following month and hopefully it will jog my very full TV related memory of anything I might miss.

So in no particular order here is what I am thankful for when it comes to TV in 2015:

  • The Hollywood Reporter TV Actress roundtable participants look like this and not this.
  • Comedy shows that explore a broad range of topics which not only make me laugh until I cry, but also invoke full on Claire Danes level of cry face. I am mostly looking at you You’re the Worst.
  • While I’m on the subject of comedies that make me misty eyed; Parks and Recreation ended this season on a high with an episode that pivoted on the Six Feet Under model and caused just as many tears.
  • Cable shows are embracing male nudity beyond just butts (special shout-outs to The Leftovers and The Affair) and all this after the The Comeback had a whole episode dedicated to skewering cable on this issue.
  • Everything Valerie Cherish.
  • Everything Abbi and Ilana.
  • “Looking for a Plot.”
  • Teen girls on The Americans avoiding the usual annoying teen trap many other dramas fall foul of.
  • And that every episode is a lesson in tension and an exploration on marriage and identity. It was my number one show in March and it still is in November (spoiler alert).
  • That Agent Carter got a second season and I now own the same lipstick as Peggy Carter.
  • The master class in acting delivered by Carrie Coon and Regina King on The Leftovers and for every insanely wonderful thing this show is doing. Also for Justin Theroux’s ability to look bewildered and devastated at any given opportunity.
  • The Villanueva women.
  • Getting to see Tatiana Maslany take on even more characters and make me forget she is playing everyone in a scene. And this wave.
  • Kroll Show going out on a high and creating this incredible universe where so many characters overlapped and intersected. And because I can’t say “Oh, hello” without wondering if there is too much tuna and I sometimes inadvertently say ‘Ameezing’ like I’m on PubLIZity.
  • The 12 Angry Men episode of Inside Amy Schumer.
  • Rob and Sharon on Catastrophe (even if the amount of things Sharon says that are like me is reaching a worrying level).
  • Shows that take will they/won’t they situations and turn them into yep they will. Oh hey there Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
  • All of Lady Gaga’s costuming on American Horror Story: Hotel.
  • Fargo indulging my love of all things 1970s clothing.
  • Daenerys’ dragon necklace.
  • The brief but amazing turn by Birgitte Hjort Sørensen on Game of Thrones.
  • Kit Harington Hair Watch.
  • Peggy’s cigarette smoking sunglasses strut.
  • Peggy roller skating.
  • The many times Mad Men made me cry.
  • Sally Draper.
  • Watching Felicity with Julie Hammerle and the time travel arc being even better than I imagined.
  • This Entertainment Weekly cover.
  • Master of None using THAT passage from The Bell Jar (which led to more tears – TV has made me cry a lot this year).
  • Jon Stewart’s last Daily Show (more tears).
  • All the incredible music I’ve ‘discovered’ thanks to shows such as GirlsOITNBMaster of NoneLookingYou’re the Worst and Togetherness.
  • No longer having “Drip Drop” stuck in my head.
  • The lighting on The Knick.
  • Oscar Isaac’s mustache/dad jeans and all the Bruce Springsteen used throughout Show Me a Hero. And, how the thought of this show hits me like a gut punch.
  • Every beautiful/fucked up thing they got away with on Hannibal this season.
  • Queen of ladysuits – Alana Bloom.
  • #LadySuitWatch2015
  • Superheroes on TV.
  • Jessica Jones’ leather jacket and her friendship with Trish.
  • Matt Murdock and this balloon.
  • Pre-emptive Mulder and Scully feeeeeeelings.
  • When Sherlock bought Joan the perfect outfit.
  • Every single one of Diane Lockhart’s statement necklaces.
  • Giving Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson more screen time on The Affair.
  • All the wardrobe inspiration from so many shows this year and the always growing Wish List.
  • That I got to talk to three amazing costume designers and write about it.
  • The range in costume design and shows covered on here includes everything from period to contemporary to fantasy; I am thankful there is a vast amount to discuss and get inspired by.
  • Season 2 of Transparent is almost here!

The list is long and there are probably some very obvious things I have missed. I will get mad at myself later, but for now Happy Thanksgiving!

If you’re looking for Thanksgiving episodes to watch maybe take a rewind and watch these offerings from Felicity and Dawson’s Creek.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

Talking TV friendships, real life unions, costuming and make-up behind the scenes snaps on this week’s Insta round-up. Plus previewing a couple of things for 2016.

The caption on this photo says it all really. Loving this lip color on Elisabeth Moss.

Halfway through Jessica Jones and the Jessica/Trish friendship is currently my favorite thing on a long list of things I really like about this show. There is a rich history and their relationship is so incredibly layered; it’s not always easy, but they can count on each other even when they disagree. Glad to see it looks just as fun on set.

Now for more Jessica Jones cast shenanigans. This time with hats.

The Scandal love interest web continues to spin ever on and while I was very much Team David and Abby, I could definitely get on board this new pairing. The regifting in the last episode was not a classy move though and David loses points for that one.

Celebrity weddings and the coverage of these events can range from no photos at all (see Jen and Justin) to a magazine deal (see Brad and Angelina). And then there is Sofia Vergara who decided to cut out the middle man and use social media to share plenty of photos of her special day with Joe Manganiello. This custom Zuhair Murad gown is stunning.

And there are plenty of Modern Family faces on hand to help celebrate the big day. For many more dancing and party pictures of the big event head here. Meanwhile I will be contemplating the politics of celebrity access particularly at an event like this.

The Leftovers and Costume Identity in “International Assassin”

24 Nov

The Leftovers took a strange and wonderful trip this week with “International Assassin” as Kevin Garvey experienced something that could be described as purgatory/the afterlife or even a drug induced descent into his psyche. There is no one definitive answer – on this show that is a rare – and your interpretation will vary depending on whether you think Kevin is experiencing a psychotic break or if Patti really is there talking to him. It is an incredibly trippy episode and these kinds of dream state outings can be divisive with some seeing it as an easy way to explore the inner workings of a character/story. I tend to like an existential journey if it is done well and The Leftovers hits all the right notes with their exploration of everything Kevin has been experiencing since this version of Patti came into his life.

Waking up naked in a bathtub essentially being spat up by the water we see Kevin surviving another near drowning. There are also rebirth connotations and the hotel room location further disorientates both Kevin and us as it is nondescript and could essentially be anywhere. The first test Kevin must face is picking an outfit or rather picking an identity with the closet offering up a riddle of sorts “Know first who you are, and then adorn yourself accordingly.” It all sounds very biblical and the presence of religious garb is not surprising, nor is Kevin’s immediate dismissal of this ensemble. Next comes the all white Guilty Remnant signature look and this gets a mere glance; I can see Kevin in the purple robes before he would ever contemplate wearing GR material.

The Leftovers 2.08 KevinMore time is spent perusing the uniform he used to wear, but this is not who he is anymore and he left that version of himself back in Mapleton. Kevin was always the reluctant police chief and while he is drawn toward this idea of order it is not the right look for wherever this place is.

The Leftovers 2.08 Kevin GarveyIt is also not very incognito and there are responsibilities that come with wearing this uniform; one of those isn’t killing the woman who has been plaguing your earthy existence. The black suit doesn’t come with the same set of pre-conceived notions, even if Kevin later finds out that it makes him the international assassin of the episode title (*drink*). It could mean one of many things and people wear black suits for various reasons; the other three outfits have specific roles and right now Kevin is pretty lost other than the mission at hand to vanquish his tormentor. Because Kevin isn’t privy to the secrets of this universe we are thrust into this same level of bewilderment as he is and Justin Theroux is nailing the desperation of these many WTF moments in what continues to be new and devastating ways; it isn’t just down to his magical and super expressive eyebrows either.

There is another Damon Lindelof show that springs to mind where this episode is concerned and that protagonist was wearing something very similar when we first met him; Jack Shephard is no international assassin.

Lost Jack ShepherdHe picked well and luckily this is a very quick drying suit after he took a swim to save what turned out to be a young Patti. Bonus points for being the perfect fit and woah does Jack’s suit look 90s level of baggy in comparison.

The LeftoversOverall it is probably best he didn’t go for his old uniform as things don’t look so good for this person (maybe the version of Kevin who went for the police chief look) who walked by Kevin later in the episode.

The Leftovers 2.08 policeAnd for those (like me) who were slightly disappointed that Kevin didn’t take a walk down clothing memory lane this is for you.

Kevin GarveyAt least those aviators have made the leap from Mapleton to Jarden.

Earlier this season I wrote about Nora’s change of look, while Kevin pretty much stayed the same other than losing his uniform and along with it some of his power/control. Not that this uniform protected him from the crazy back home – remember the dry cleaning incident and all of his shirts hanging in the woods?! In fact his handcuffs are now part of his daily routine to stop his sleepwalking rather than being part of his job. Plus he has put himself in danger thanks to the handcuffs when he stopped by the fire station to get them removed; now John (the self appointed man in charge) has his hand print which will place him at the scene of his daughter’s disappearance and there is no way John is going to believe any of Kevin’s sleepwalking reasoning.

The Leftovers 2.08 wellPatti dies for a second time with Kevin at her side and unlike the first version where she took her own life and he embraced her as she died, the embrace comes first and is followed by Kevin drowning her at the bottom of the well. It is all he can do to save himself and complete his mission (the suit did the trick), but what we don’t know is what got whispered in his ear Lost in Translation style on the bridge. What it comes down to is not killing an enemy, but understanding who Patti was and why the sudden departure gave her a twisted new lease of life. Who knew a story about Jeopardy could be this devastating and explain so much about a character’s journey.

The warning that he will be forever changed is incredibly foreboding and no matter whether this is all in Kevin’s head or if he has experienced a version of the afterlife he is going to have a hard time explaining exactly what he has been through. Especially as we definitely saw him clawing his way out of the very real Jarden ground.

Understanding Motives on The Good Wife

23 Nov

In the battle of Diane Lockhart versus Diane Lockhart there are no winners and it is becoming increasingly clear that one very rich client may end up being detrimental to the rest of their business. Actually there was one person who did rather well out of this fight as Grace scooped up all of the clients who are unhappy with Diane’s role as Reese Dipple’s mouthpiece. It doesn’t matter how many times she mentions this is First Amendment case when the subject matter is one dealing with choice. Why does Diane go so hard line on it?

The Good Wife 7.08 Diane LockhartPart of this is down to being presented with a quote that came from her own speech to EMILY’s List and there is a certain amount of trying to keep bias out of the courtroom. But I also have to wonder if this is all there is to Diane’s motives and even though this video is against everything she believes in why does she take it as far as she does? Dipple is their most valuable client financially and he has already impacted the firm by laying down stipulations to stop Alicia from returning last season.

So there is this element of Diane bending to accommodate because of how much Dipple is worth. And because it is a First Amendment debate Diane can at least pretend she is arguing for something she does believe in. My main concern with this case and the Dipple relationship (which is being conducted through the always amazing Peter Gallagher) is how much it compromises Diane and what it looks like it might be setting up in the long run; a Diane versus Alicia showdown.

Don’t get me wrong I am thrilled to see Diane getting a story of her own – now can we find one for Cary please? – but I worry that it will result in more animosity between Alicia and Diane. Take last season when Alicia’s campaign got in the way of her job and she had what still feels like a very manufactured fight with her then partners followed by the blow up over the supposed Howard related sabotage. The latter was a misunderstanding and while Alicia and Diane have never been the besties I long for them to be (Alicia’s lack of friends is something I worry about more than I probably should) there has always been a strong level of respect. So it is a concern that the pieces are aligning to put them in conflict especially now Alicia potentially has four of Diane’s clients and the little matter of Jason moonlighting for Lockhart, Agos.

The Good Wife 7.08 Diane and JasonAh yes this is something Jason hasn’t disclosed and the surprised look on Alicia’s face when she heard Diane in the background during a Jason phone call is also steeped in displeasure; I don’t think Alicia wants to share.

When Diane utters “well that was easy” we know it is probably going to be the opposite and the resolution is pretty much Diane pulling a catch 22 and excusing herself from the case. Cary gives her kudos for this conclusion, but I’m not entirely sure what the overall point was other than to show that Diane is good at arguing against something she believes in and to create a rift with some of her clients.

Diane dresses for battle in the way we know and love from one her phoenix like pins to the double chain necklace of glory. Also delivering on the “Who the fuck are you face?”

The Good Wife 7.08 DianeThere is a certain element of feeling slightly unmoored this season and despite this being a creative leap from last season’s messy endeavor it still lacks direction. Every week has been fun and it definitely more enjoyable watching Alicia and her startup than Alicia and her SA campaign, but we are reaching the point of the year where the wheels needs to be doing more than spinning. Especially as this could be the last season (there has been no official announcement but all signs point to this could be the final outing).

In the Florrick, Quinn (not Florrick, Agos) the firm continues to explore their options in making this venture a success with varying results. Quinn meets with Canning in a move to find some clients to poach and this fails spectacularly; they are a formidable team in the courtroom, less so in a boardroom. Maybe talk to each other before these pitches. Meanwhile Grace solidifies her position beyond her mother’s lackey (what about school?) as she uses the many computers in their apartment to create what sounds like a busy office and ends up doing rather well out of Diane’s case. Part of this is luck and good timing, but Grace can’t just be dismissed as she does a much better job than her mom and Lucca.

The Good Wife 7.08 GraceGrace gets points for pattern clashing delights and then some get subtracted for that awful ‘famous’ cushion on her bed. She earns those points back for telling her mother how much she now owes her after scoring these new clients.

The Good Wife 7.08 LuccaIt also looks like Lucca has been taking jewelry tips off Diane and this necklace is like a less intimidating version of the chain link statement pieces Diane favors.

One place where motives take center stage is between Eli and Courtney Page. Eli has a crush and his eavesdropping is no longer about revenge. His desire to get Courtney to change her mind about how/what she pays her employees does relate to the campaign, but really it is an excuse to spend more time with her and seeing a vulnerable Eli always makes for a fun and rare change.

I’m not entirely sure what the purpose is of this courtship or where this storyline is headed and yet I’m thoroughly enjoying the change of pace; aka the perfect way to describe this season.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 Nov

After last week’s pants and ladysuits affair we are returning to a dress filled “Out of the Box” with plenty of bold color, pattern (SO MANY STRIPES) and statement frocks. The pitter patter of awards campaigning is upon us plus premieres and other end of year events are bringing these sartorial treats.

Krysten RitterHappy Jessica Jones Day! And Krysten Ritter looks phenomenal at the New York premiere in ethereal Zuhair Murad Resort 2016 demonstrating the ideal amount of sheer. I am very excited to start this new Netflix series and I’m sure I will have some thoughts on here in the next week or so (depending on how quickly I burn through it).

Lizzy CaplanAnother floaty white ensemble delight from Lizzy Caplan in Thakoon at the Night Before premiere, which manages to capture festive cheer in a subtle fashion. Plus another lesson in sheer that doesn’t make me sadness sigh.

Teyonah ParrisThe Academy events are here and at the 7th annual Governors Awards on Saturday, Teyonah Parris wore this stripe Pedram Couture beauty. Black and metallic silver are perfect for this time of year and Parris is always on top form on the red carpet.

Brie LarsonBrie Larson keeps it super simple in Calvin Klein and stands out in doing so. I cannot wait to see much more of her on the red carpet this award season. Still very much feeling her reaction to Cate Blanchett in a jumpsuit.

Ava DuVernayAnother flawless block color dress and Ava DuVernay’s blue peplum Elvira Jude is striking, as are the gold pumps which are peeking out the bottom.

Emily BluntEmily Blunt is a TV Ate My Wardrobe fave both on and off screen; she constantly makes interesting choices including this shimmery Marc Jacobs resort frock. Loving the leather collar.

Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington adds to the stripe joy in a matching Saloni top and skirt with thankfully not quite matchy matchy Nicholas Kirkwood chevron pumps at the inaugural WWD/Variety Stylemakers event. The work of Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo was recognized with Washington presenting her with the award and after ditching Scandal this season, I just watched the mid-season finale and those costumes really are everything. This one had it all from the fanciest of frocks to incredible coats and an all important wine cardigan, plus the episode was also really great.

Kirsten DunstNow this is pretty much a dream dress and Kirsten Dunst has been appearing a lot on here recently; I think this Gucci chevron-striped frock might be my favorite as it has a very 70s feel to it without looking like she has just come straight from the set of Fargo.

Elizabeth Banks MockingjayPretty Much the Dream Dress Part 2 with Elizabeth Banks in a colorful sequin stripe Dolce & Gabbana number at the LA Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 premiere and this has festive party written all over it.

Elizabeth BanksDouble Elizabeth Banks this week as I couldn’t resist this Giulietta fun play on the LBD at the VH1 Big in 2015 with Entertainment Weekly Awards.

Aubrey PlazaAnd now a twist on a white sporty style mini dress from Aubrey Plaza paired with stacked strappy heels giving this an overall retro feel.

Abbi, Ilana and AmyI just realized that season 3 of Broad City isn’t too far away (okay slightly further away than expected as yesterday it was announced its return will be February 17 instead of the usual January window) and I definitely don’t need an excuse to post a photo of these amazing ladies.

Attending the Worldwide Orphans Gala (of which Amy Poehler has served as an Ambassador of the Arts since 2013) they struck the balance between casual and fancy with Ilana’s matching crop top and skirt combo working like a charm and I am so here for Abbi’s floral wrap. Amy’s sparkly skirt is also super festive appropriate and this outfit also reminds me of how much I love/agree with Rachel Syme’s recent tights essay (although I would’ve gone with a different color pump).

Claire Danes Covers Allure: Talks MSCL, 90s Style and Body Shaming

18 Nov

Whenever Claire Danes talks about My So-Called Life it lights up a very specific nostalgia spot and so this comment in the December issue of Allure feels like it could be directly referencing me “they loved the show, that it was really meaningful to them when they were going through a bad, chaotic, murky time of being a teenager” Yep all of that is very accurate and the MSCL’s pop culture position stretches far beyond its 18-episode run (it got to the final in Vulture’s recent High School TV Showdown) and Danes discusses how this has impacted her “I feel a real loyalty to my generation. I think your identity is sort of set in your teenage years. And my cultural identity was set at that same time.”

What struck me about the shot used here of Claire Danes and Winona Ryder from 1996 is how I had forgotten that I didn’t just model my hairstyle on Michelle Williams, but Danes was a HUGE influence too – I was too scared to go for the full Winona pixie cut – and this barrette/zigzag side parting became one of my signature looks. In fact I’m actually wearing a barrette right now while typing this as like Danes my hair constantly falls in front of my face and I really need a haircut. This whole slideshow is a delight going from on and off screen style from MSCL to now including some rather dreamy takes about her relationship with Hugh Dancy.

Claire Danes Allure coverThe cover image goes full 90s with a darker lip color (Winona would approve) and this silk Lanvin dress is a stunning shade of blue; even if I would love to see a photo shoot in Danes endorsed overalls. Or maybe a little bit of plaid. But as far as glam editorials go this one is good, if not a little run of the mill. And while one of the topics covered is the much discussed cry face phenomenon, my favorite shot is on the other end of the facial expression scale.

Claire Danes AllureI love a good cry face and one day I will set up the Cry Face Olympics of which there will many contenders from television and film. Danes will be a big hitter and even though I’m sure it is irritating to discuss this part of her acting style in every interview, she has softened her position from annoyance to yeah this is just what I do “I’m very vain about my performance. I want to give as honest a performance as I can. But I’m not so worried about being regarded as beautiful when I’m playing a character.” What she says about body image is also pretty inspiring and how there are all these different factors at play. We can be more than one thing.

“It’s just so ingrained in us, the idea that we should take up the right amount of space, literally and figuratively. I’ve wrestled with this my whole life, as just a person in the world and as somebody who makes images. It’s OK to want to look and feel your best. It’s OK to work at being attractive, whatever that means to you. And it’s also OK to not expect to be defined by that. It’s OK to be powerful in every way: to be big, to take up space. To breathe and thrive.”

New Agent Carter Season 2 Trailer and Peggy’s New Sunglasses

18 Nov

2016 will be kicking off to a good start when Agent Carter returns on Tuesday, January 5 to ABC with a two-hour premiere event. Peggy is making the move from New York to Hollywood and while she certainly could make an amazing film star there are matters of national security that she will be preoccupied with.

In the season 2 trailer we see several returning faces such as James D’Arcy as Jarvis and Enver Gjokaj as Daniel Sousa, plus new cast member Reggie Austin who looks set to be a new love interest for Peggy. Queen of the double cross Bridget Regan will be back as arch enemy Dottie although she isn’t in the new preview. Sadly it doesn’t look like Peggy’s bestie Angie will be making the trip west and while Lyndsy Fonseca was definitely in talks to appear in this new season there hasn’t been any confirmation of this.

Here is the first look at Peggy in Los Angeles courtesy of the official Agent Carter Twitter including plenty of fantastic costuming and red lipstick to gaze in wonder at. Get ready to swoon at all things Hayley Atwell.

And here she is in a first still disembarking from the plane looking cool as fuck in red sunglasses. Sunglasses which rival Gretchen from You’re the Worst for how much I’m coveting them (regular readers will know this is a big deal). The sunny climate calls for appropriate accessorizing and they also make an appearance in the trailer and red is an important color in Peggy’s lookbook.

Update! For anyone wondering what make the sunglasses are, Steve in the comments helpfully notes that they are by Celine.

Update Part 2! Thanks to Ashley in the comments the sunglasses have now been identified as coming from Old Focals and this has been confirmed by Agent Carter costume designer Giovanna Melton on Twitter.IMG_3144For more Agent Carter including key art for the new season (with Peggy in signature red and blue) head here and check back for more updates.

Update! Agent Carter will return later this month (January 19) and sadly not this week (because the State of the Union is happening earlier – thanks, Obama). But still not that long to go before we get to see Peggy in all her glory again. Get the red lipstick at the ready.
