The 2018 Golden Globes Red Carpet Part I

8 Jan

The 2018 Golden Globes red carpet was a far different affair than what we have come to expect; this was in direct reaction to the Reckoning that has been taking place in Hollywood since October. The black dress code was spearheaded by the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements as a symbol of support for those, not just in the Hollywood industry that have experienced sexual harassment and abuse.

The merits of using fashion as a visual to show solidarity and as a way to use their position of privilege in this manner, has been much debated over the last week. It was incredibly striking seeing star after star wearing a take on a black ensemble.

And I will turn it over to Samantha Powell as she explained so eloquently on Twitter why the black outfit choice is a strong visual.

What became clear early into the E! coverage is how they seemed to think that by not asking “who are you wearing?” they were helping solve the bigger issue at hand. Instead this makes it seem like the designer is complicit and that we can’t be feminist AND care about fashion. Designers deserve to be credited for the hard work they have done. This is why I will make sure I do that here (where I have the information available). Updating to link to the excellent piece by Alyssa Vingan Klein for Fashionista on this matter.

There has been a lot of smart writing about this red carpet prior to the event including the Fug Girls talking to Vox—which I mentioned on here yesterday—and this piece by Leah Chernikoff about why Elle is still covering the red carpet. The Cut explains why they won’t be ranking the red carpet and this is also a valid take.

I am covering the red carpet because I believe that fashion has the power to tell a story, to mark a moment in time. At first I was a little dubious about how the whole black dress thing would work, but on the whole I think it was a success. Less striking was E! asking women about #MeToo and #TimesUp, while throwing soft ball questions about the projects the male attendees had been working on. Even though they were wearing #TimesUp pins.

Another high point was seeing activists accompanying A-list stars as their dates to the Golden Globes. In my post about Michelle Williams’ super candid interview in Harper’s Bazaar, I mentioned how she was trying to figure out how to use her privileged position for good and it wasn’t long before we found out how. Williams was the one who started the ball rolling on this, contacting #MeToo founder Tarana Burke about being her date for the show. Burke tells Elle, that in response to this she suggested getting more women involved instead of it being about one person.

So for my first post (there will be two more after this) I am focusing on the activists on the red carpet. They are the reason we are talking about this. They are the reason change can come about. One aspect that stood out when Williams was being interviewed with Tarana Burke is that every time Williams was asked a question she made sure that it went back to either Burke or the big topic of the evening.

Michelle is wearing Louis Vuitton (of course) with a simple, but elegant floral detail. I don’t have the dress credit for Tarana Burke’s fabulous sequin number; if/when I do I’ll make sure to update this post (which applies to all dresses I don’t have the credits for).

By the end of the night both Burke and Williams are barefoot, which is so relatable. Thanks Busy for this shot!

With Meryl Streep is Ai-Jen Poo, the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, an organization that is the “nation’s leading voice for dignity and fairness for millions of domestic workers in the United States, most of whom are women.”

Streep’s Vera Wang gown shows how striking an unfussy black frock can be while Ai-Jen Poo adds sparkle. Something that was a big trend of the night. Billie Jean King has been a big presence during the Battle of the Sexes press tour and I’m pleased to see her with Emma Stone at this event. It is a shame this movie fell out of the broader conversation because I thought it was pretty great. The final act was incredibly emotional for me.

And four very different approaches to black showing just how versatile it is; Billie Jean King takes the suit option, Emma Stone wears lace Louis Vuitton, sparkly Christian Siriano for America Ferrera and velvet Christian Dior Couture for Natalie Portman. Oh and Portman also did this.

[Source]

Damn Natalie! Cue everyone (myself included) adding gifs from the Natalie Portman rap to their Twitter. Saru Jayaraman is the co-founder and co-director of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United; ROC’s mission statement is “To improve wages and working conditions for the 14 million people who work in America’s restaurant industry.”

Jayaraman accompanied Amy Poehler, Poehler had one of the funniest moments in Seth Meyer’s opening monologue.

I can’t resist a caped sleeve. Plus Jayaraman nailed her statement earring choice.
Emma Watson has been working with Imkaan director Marai Larasi on a project for the past year. Imkaan is a UK-based organization that is “dedicated to addressing violence against Black minoritised women and girls i.e. women which are defined in policy terms as Black and ‘Minority Ethnic’ (BME).”

I love Larasi’s buckle flats. Watson goes for ruffles in custom Ronald van der Kemp.“To unify the struggle to promote farm worker women’s leadership in a national movement to create a broader visibility and advocate for changes that ensure their human rights” is the Alianza Nacional de Campesinas mission. Board President, Monica Ramirez was the guest of Laura Dern at the Golden Globes.

Dern also goes for black with a sparkle twist in Armani Prive, Ramirez’s adds a bold touch with her lip and pedicure color. Ashley Judd was one of the first people to break the Harvey silence that had been destroying careers and hurting women for decades. Seeing her on this red carpet where Harvey was once king is a welcome sight. Salma Hayek wrote a blistering op-ed for The New York Times about her own painful experience with Harvey.

A bold red lip and Elie Saab for Ashley Judd, Salma Hayek wears elegant long sleeved Balenciaga. To one of the moments of the night and the way to energize a room is to hear Oprah speak. Winfrey was this year’s recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille award and you can watch (and then rewatch) Oprah’s speech below.

Crushing it in every way conceivable in custom Atelier Versace.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

22 Sep

The Emmys red carpet delivered a number of standout looks including Tessa Thompson’s swishy rainbow dream and Lena Waithe’s gold-leaf jacket; the perfect style complement to go with her gold statue.

This is a pattern heavy time of year, much to my delight. So get ready for more fashion week looks, premieres, magazine editorials and one final 2017 Emmy Awards stunner.Alison Brie co-hosted Glamour x Tory Burch Women to Watch event and this entire Tory Burch look is the perfect look for a lunchtime shindig. Also, I need that bag in my life.More Tory Burch and a good week for pleats; if I worked in a fancy office, I would definitely want to borrow this outfit from America Ferrera. Dear White People’s Logan Browning gets the most ’70s of the Tory Burch looks and of course I love everything about this metallic floral number with a strong collar. Fabulous gold wedge sandals too. Kerry Washington was feted at the Women Making History Awards and gives great ’80s polka dot—see also this Zoë Kravitz in Vogue— wearing Carolina Herrera. For more in wacky fun outfits look no further than Zendaya in a Christian Siraino jumpsuit, serving up full flares. Love that she is wearing her specs to this event too. Gucci at Milan Fashion Week showcased so many wild patterns that continue to lean into my fave style decade—yep, the ’70s—and Dakota Johnson is in a dream of a dress. Continuing the theme of more out there dress choices and as with a lot of Louis Vuitton ensembles, I should probably hate this, but don’t. And I can’t even claim Michelle Williams blindness here. It kind of looks like a shirt/blazer hybrid giving me more reasons to scrunch my nose up and yet I find it charming. Also to be filed under charming is Domhnall Gleeson at the Goodbye Christopher Robin London premiere. He is everywhere at the moment and one of my favorite things about Gleeson is he plays so many different kinds of characters—last week I did a Domhnall double with mother! and American Made.

Of course he is in Burberry and of course he looks great. I do miss the beard though.Following on from the pink sheer socks Keri Russell wore and Kirsten Dunst is trying this style out in black as she promotes Woodshock. After all the fancy pants looks from the Emmys, this has been a great time for daytime sartorial delights and talk show outfits.

And because you know I have strong feelings about this relationship. Plus, Kirsten Dunst’s mother also sounds amazing.Another week, another fabulous Maggie Gyllenhaal editorial as she talks The Deuce with Harper’s Bazaar. An office themed photoshoot and I definitely raised an eyebrow at their choice of headline. But the piece talks about the research Gyllenhaal did for The Deuce in a way that continues to show how much thought she put into her performance as Candy and her role as producer:

“What is the story you’re telling, and how can this be fit into it, and how does she shift and change? How is she empowered and disempowered? How do those affect each other? We talked about all of that. I think it was important to me—because it is such a delicate subject matter in 2017—to be a part of the storytelling, and to have a guarantee that I would be a part of the storytelling.”For Variety, Sterling K. Brown crushes his sock color choice and how to pose when you’ve won Emmys two years in a row.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

4 Aug

A very busy style week, which is why there is a separate TCA sartorial catch-up here. Although, as it is still in full flow there is more TCA below. Plus premieres and some September issue offerings that not only give great photos, but also deliver on the interview front. At the Defenders premiere Mike Colter looks suave af in custom Michael Andrews Bespoke – they also do a lot of the menswear tailoring on The Defenders – and this is how you wear a three-piece suit.

I’m very late to Luke Cage (I’m about halfway through the season) and am thoroughly enjoying Mike Colter in his mix of henleys and hoodies with the occasional suit. I don’t tend to love a cut out, but Krysten Ritter looking hot as hell in siren red Julien Macdonald. She stands out on her own and in the group shots with the guys. Love that she’s not toning it down on the lipstick front either.

Thankfully I am not left wondering what brand/shade it is because Ritter’s makeup artist, Nick Barose shares the Lancôme details on Instagram.Elisabeth Moss has gone all in on patterns while promoting Top of the Lake and super stylist Karla Welch is all about floral Kate Spade at the moment (see also America Ferrera below). And they are working like a charm.
Regular readers will know how much I obsess over yellow, so of course I am head over heels for Aja Naomi King’s Reformation frock that she wore to the HFPA Annual Grants Banquet. A strong week for strong lipstick. Also at the HFPA Annual Grants Banquet is Zoe Lister-Jones in a ’70s inspired Longchamp pattern dream that would look great in my closet. Lister-Jones also keeps with the lip color theme.  So much happiness in this photo of Rachel Bloom and Albert Tsai at the CBS TCA Summer Soiree. Also sadness because I miss Bert and Trophy Wife. Bloom is also wearing an ideal patterned frock for this event. As I mentioned yesterday, Louboutin red soles are perfect for TCA panels because you’re gonna see the flash of red. The same applies to striped socks for guys as Sterling K. Brown expertly shows at the This is Us session. Also, oh hey Sterling K. Brown. Looking good.America Ferrera gives great floral frock at the NBC TCA day, in a poppy covered Kate Spade and I am so here for this sleeve length. There’s a couple of looks this week that point to the changing season (yes I know it is still August, but fashion is very much thinking fall right now).September issues are being rolled out and magazines are gifting us this week with some amazing interviews/editorials. This really is my favorite time of year.

One of the best comes from Town & Country with Billie Lourd as the cover star. Lourd is about to star in the new American Horror Story and original Ryan Murphy muse Sarah Paulson is the one who conducts the interview. Murphy is not the main link between these women as Lourd’s mother Carrie Fisher, took Paulson under her wing when Billie Lourd was just 10-years old. The interview is funny, sad and insightful delivering a look into what it is like to grow up with such an iconic mother and grandmother. Plus dealing with the heartbreak of losing both women within a couple of days of each other.

It is very much worth your time and the accompanying shoot is just as fabulous. Paisley frocks and ladysuits; my ideal combination.Aziz Ansari is a stylish guy so it makes a lot of sense for him to appear on the cover of GQ Style and go to Paris Fashion Week as part of the profile. The interview itself covers everything from creative process to Ansari unplugging completely from the internet, which made me think of the Parks and Rec episode where Tom is banned from looking at screens. But a voluntary version. It goes to some very personal places and I do like an interview that doubles as an almost therapy session.

The clothes are a lot of fun and considering how much I liked the coats on season 2 of Master of None it was impossible not to pick this mustard yellow dream.Jenny Slate always gives great interviews even when she is trying to be a little more guarded than in the past as you can see in this Marie Claire profile while Slate discusses Landline (I spoke to costume designer Elisabeth Vastola about the project here).

One of my favorite profiles from this year is this Slate’s unfiltered interview with Vulture and this is something Slate brings up in terms of when only a few soundbites from a long convo spread far and wide across entertainment/gossip sites:

“It seems so naïve: You’re just talking to a nice person, and you have a really honest, beautiful conversation, and she writes about it in an honest, beautiful way. But then, it goes through all these other outlets and gets distilled. And then it can be made to seem like you were being cheap.…I didn’t mean to do that. Especially not with an experience that was so precious to me.”

Also these matching REDValentino stripe shirt and shorts are fantastic.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

19 May

Ah, May. That time of year when EVERYTHING is going on including the Cannes film festival and TV upfronts. This means plenty of red carpet moments and I would usually break down each network with their own post. Unfortunately (or I guess fortunately) this week I have been stacked with other work (see herehere and there’s more exciting stuff to come) and so it all comes down to “Out of the Box.”

So this is a bumper edition that also includes Emmy FYC events, premieres, the BAFTA TV awards and more. Also continuing the trend of all the color and pattern.I’ve talked on numerous occasions about how thrilled I am when cast members remain friends long after the project has wrapped and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants ladies are a prime example of that. Often popping up on each other’s Instagram posts in a way that doesn’t feel phony or like they’re doing it just for the content boost. Basically it is their “just like us” moment and I never feel this way about Blake Lively.

They all turned out for Amber Tamblyn’s directorial debut Paint it Black and there’s no upstaging here; it isn’t a one black blazer fits all situation and three out of the four have gone this route. Alexis Bledel continues her super hot patterned streak and this whole situation is making me want to rewatch those movies.

Also whoa that I just found out two Twin Peaks links – yeah I’m late to this – as Amber Tamblyn’s dad is Dr Jacoby and Lively’s half-sister is Lana. Michaela Coel’s mother might be new favorite designer and at the BAFTA TV Awards she went mini in this very fun geometric number. Also going short is Michelle Williams at the Wonderstruck Cannes photocall and this is my favorite of her recent Louis Vuitton looks. The shape and pattern are fabulous; it manages to be the most Michelle Williams with a slight edge.

It has been too long since our last Michelle/Busy bathroom selfie, but Busy’s Alice + Olivia rainbow frock is a delight.

Sadly, there was no Busy Philipps at the upfronts and NBC are still yet to make a decision on her pilot Sackett Sisters so here is my obligatory #MustSeeSackett shout-out.At the ABC upfront, Kerry Washington gives great color blocking cuteness in Fausto Puglisi and nailing the whole daytime event styling.More ABC darlings and Tracee Ellis Ross also got the red memo wearing Ryan Roche (and styled by our fave Karla Welch). Ross’ TV husband, Anthony Anderson also looks super swish and I still need to catch up on Black-ish, much to my TV watching shame. At the EW upfront party, Yvette Nicole Brown is giving me so much jumpsuit inspiration in polka dot Corey Lynn Calter. Such a fun look and also pockets!

As a big Madewell fan it thrills me to see one of their clutches on the red carpet (because it is nice to see things I can actually afford). A floral explosion at NBC and more Karla Welch stylist delights (see also America Ferrera) with Amy Poehler in Warm NY. It also pleases me immensely that Poehler is wearing a colorful pump with this colorful frock.Double America Ferrera this week and she’s taking a page from her Sisterhood co-star’s book in Saloni.

Ferrera’s current co-star, Ben Feldman looks great – that shirt! – until you get to his shoes. I’m actually okay with sneakers with a suit (especially for a daytime event), but not these sneakers. Confession – I really dislike the bottom of Mandy Moore’s skirt and everything I love about this look is above the knee. The lace is too much and it distracts. However, the top of this DVF ensemble is amazing and ticks so many boxes – collar, pattern – and I am also feeling very emotional about Ron Cephas Jones standing next to Moore.

It wouldn’t be This is Us if I wasn’t getting teary.More florals and this time of the maxi dress variety from Gina Rodriguez in Milly at the CW upfront. What a delight.

It isn’t all flowers and stripes will forever take my heart; Constance Zimmer’s Tracy Reese frock looks like it is from the same collection as Susan Kelechi Watson’s sweater from earlier this year. Perfect panel attire. How much do I want to see Judith Light to guest star on The Good Fight wearing this caped dress? I think you can guess the answer. At the Paley Honors: Celebrating Women In Television event, Judith Light crushes everything, as always.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

28 Apr

After last week’s color and pattern extravaganza things are slightly more dialed back in this edition of “Out of the Box,” but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Plus there are still plenty of prints on display across various events this week and the Tribeca Film Festival is delivering on a number of sartorial levels.

Between award season faves and new shows getting the promotion treatment there’s a lot to celebrate this week. We also have 2/4 of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants cast, which seemed like something worth pointing out. Viola Davis shut everything down for the second week in a row and on the back of her incredible Time cover she wore this stunning purple Armani gown to the event celebrating this issue/list. Award season has not been over for long, but it is safe to say we’ve been missing the weekly dose of Ruth Negga in these parts. Luckily for us she took a break from filming the second season of Preacher (which I’m really looking forward to) and stopped by the Tiffany & Co 2017 Blue Collection Gala in New York wearing this fabulous Gucci ensemble.

This is ticking so many boxes including a strong collar and all things leopard print. Now entering the Tribeca Film Festival portion of the week and regular readers will know how much I love it when co-stars come out to support each others projects. The Mr. Robot crew seems pretty tight and Rami Malek was joined by his onscreen sister and sorta-BFF at the premiere of his film Buster’s Mal Heart.

They’re also doing a good job on the outfit coordination without being too matchy matchy with Carly Chaikin looking slightly more casual and I am coveting both her clutch and Portia Doubleday’s bag hard.Rami as ever is bringing it with his suit choice and what looks like a classic black take in the first shot is actually hiding the accents stripe down the sleeve; giving it that Rami edge. It is of course Dior Homme and Ilaria Urbinati is the stylist behind this great athleisure adjacent choice. How to do double polka dot by America Ferrera. While moderating a conversation with Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner as part of Tribeca Talks, America Ferrera delivers a great panel outfit and one with a fun 3D texture element. Great chunky silver platforms too. From fantastic shoes to ones I’m going to ignore as the rest of Rose Byrne’s Rag & Bone look is fabulous mixing feminine florals with leather. At the Flower premiere Zoey Deutch goes full Peter Pan collar in this super cute Chloé dress, which is everything I love about the ’70s influence that is still dominating.

I was just scrolling through the new arrivals at Chloé and I am maybe in love with these floral pants. Perhaps because this print is giving me flashbacks to a duvet cover my parents had. Another fun take on leopard print this week with Ruth Wilson in Alessandra Rich, which the belt helpfully points out and also nearly ruins this frock; can we do away with the very Calvin Klein ’90s actual labeling please. Thanks. Alexis Bledel doesn’t make a tonne of red carpet appearances, but when she does she hits all the right notes including this rainbow beaded halter Cushnie et Ochs frock at the premiere for The Handmaid’s Tale. Love, love, love the injection of even more color with the turquoise clutch and yellow sandals.

While I’m on the subject of promotion for the incredible adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale here is a striking cast shot with a guest appearance by author Margaret Atwood via Samira Wiley’s Instagram.

Best of the 2016 Emmys: Shimmer, Black and White

19 Sep

Continuing our Emmy style rundown and this second bumper post gives great sparkle. Plus the many different interpretations of how to wear black and white on the red carpet.constance-wuGetting 70s disco vibes from Constance Wu in J. Mendel and after Sarah Paulson’s Prada, this is my favorite look of the night.judith-lightJudith fucking Light. Always amazing. No exceptions. laverne-coxOrange is the New Black was pretty much shutout this year, but Laverne Cox is giving statuette realness is Naeem Khan.claire-danesClaire Danes might want to tone down the tan/bronzer, but her Schiaparelli super sparkly number is a stunner.taraji-p-hensonTaraji P. Henson changed it all up for presenting and I think I like this look even more than the yellow dress. Sequins and that hairstyle continue the nod to the 70s.stranger-things-kidsThe Stranger Things kids are adorable and need to be protected at all costs. Also continuing the trend of dressing better than a lot of adults, particularly in the tux department (see also Jacob Tremblay). Millie Bobby Brown put a bird on it in Red Valentino and this is the perfect brand for her.kristen-bellA very romantic looking Zuhair Murad floral gown for Kristen Bell and this is giving me all the heart eyes.yara-shahidiAnother knockout choice from Yara Shahidi and a Clara Rotescu dress that also gave great twirl/floating style.tracee-ellis-rossEverything about Tracee Ellis in this pose and Ralph Lauren dress is incredibly regal. holly-taylorThe Americans sadly didn’t win, but Holly Taylor combines great sparkle with white in custom Theia Couture. rami-malekRami Malek in a white Dior tux jacket is showing why he was on our most anticipated list.tittus-burgessRami’s not the only one crushing the white tux jacket look and Tituss Burgess also came with a strong shoe and bow tie game.sophie-turnerA sheer frock I don’t hate! Sophie Turner delivers a miracle in Valentino.jldAnd even more sheer that I like! Julia Louis-Dreyfus gave a heart crushing speech as her dad passed away on Friday, which left me pretty much sobbing into my wine.america-ferreraSequins really were the big style winner of the night and America Ferrera’s Jenny Packham frock is another evening high point.kerry-washingtonKerry Washington is never boring on the red carpet and she’s wearing a show stopping Brandon Maxwell number coupled with hair that takes me back to Olivia Pope hanging out on a tropical beach.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

4 Aug

After last week’s power dressing convention heavy “Look of the Week” we’re back on schedule with the TCA press tour dishing up the usual amount of cool/casual to slightly fancier looks. As this is the summer session it means there are plenty of floaty and floral numbers on display. Plus we’ve got a couple of other red carpet events including two TV spies infiltrating the White House.Mr Robot ladiesRami Malek and Christian Slater are great and all, but it was a really smart idea to focus this year’s Mr Robot panel on the women of this show shining a spotlight on newbie Grace Gummer, Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday and Stephanie Corneliussen as they are currently the most interesting aspect of season 2.

At TCA there are often just sitting down shots so you don’t always get a good look at the whole outfit (but you do get to see the shoes) and as with talk shows it is better to pick something that looks good seated. Pretty much don’t go too short. All four women look great and I particularly like that they are all smiling/laughing as this is something we rarely get to see on Mr Robot.Mr Robot TCANow for the stand up shot which highlights the mix of outfits including collared/blazer highs – even with the sheer aspect Stephanie Corneliussen has my fave look of the quartet – and textured frocks. Basically I am so ready for a lot more of these ladies on Mr Robot and this panel and this week’s episode is very encouraging.Issa RaeI’m really looking forward to Insecure (premieres Sunday, October 9) and star/creator Issa Rae looked fabulous at the HBO panel in a black dress with a colorful patterned trim. Plus Rae is giving me new glasses frames to covet. Sharon HorganWomen are leading the way with fall comedies at HBO and Sharon Horgan was there to discuss Divorce (also on my highly anticipated list) while giving me so many Sharon from Catastrophe vibes with her attire. Yeah things get a little confusing name wise as Sharon Horgan plays Sharon on the excellent Catastrophe and typically I want everything in her wardrobe, as I do in life it would seem.SJPIn a patterned Etro frock delight is Divorce leading lady Sarah Jessica Parker and this ideal Summer TCA wear is perfect for a post panel cocktail. Michelle DockerySometimes sitting down shots obscure what makes a great looking outfit take a turn for the worst or as Samantha Powell puts it the “sheer skirt surprise.” Case in point; Michelle Dockery at the Good Behavior panel in a lovely floral Self Portrait dress, which looks great sitting down. Michelle Dockery and Ana GasteyerAt the TCA Turner summer party Michelle Dockery switched her outfit out and the collar detail is enough to make me ignore some of the other aspects I am less keen on. Ana Gasteyer is every level of casual great with a pair of fantastic stacked shoes/red toenails.Ali ShawkatAlso at the TCA Turner summer party, Alia Shawkat is pretty much rocking my whole party aesthetic; drink in one hand and plate of food in the other. Love her very cute striped knotted shirt for extra casual vibes.America Ferrera and Ben FeldmanTwo weeks in a row for America Ferrera on “Out of the Box” and this is a much more casual setting as she promotes Superstore with co-star Ben Feldman. Both have got the casual/smart ratio down and I am especially into Ferrera’s geometric detailed pumps and pink blazer.Keri Russell and Matthew RhysNow for the fancy end of the scale as stars of The Americans Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys attended a state dinner at the White House; doing so in style and insert your Russian spy jokes here.

Russell wore an elegant draped Stephane Rolland black dress with a gold panel and it is her accessories that have caught my eye including the gold hand cuff. Going classic in a black tux and a strong hiatus beard is Matthew Rhys and for more BTS getting ready (beyond Instagram) check out People’s makeup rundown with TV Ate My Wardrobe fave Tina Turnbow.

Here is Keri Russell on The Tonight Show talking about that dinner and a white dress disaster near miss.

And for a slice of adorable and utterly charming check out their joint interview over at The Hollywood Reporter, which is pretty much, my new favorite thing. They talk their terrible ideas for how The Americans should end, why it is so great to have a character like Elizabeth Jennings, how The Wine Show came into fruition, Matthew Rhys guest starring in the final season of Girls, sex scenes on The Americans and Felicity’s hair. It is really good. Zosia MametMore black dress and strong eye makeup this week and Zosia Mamet is crushing it at the 2016 ACE Awards. And at an event celebrating accessories she has picked well on the jewelry front.Gina RodriguezBlack dresses for all in our non-TCA portion of “Out of the Box” and Gina Rodriguez goes super sexy in an off the shoulder BCBGMAXAZRIA at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Grants Banquet in Beverly Hills last night. Love the silver pumps too.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

29 Jul

After Comic-Con it has been a pretty quiet on the red carpet front so it is a convention of a political kind that dominates “Out of the Box” this week and we’ll be taking a look at the celebrities who spoke at the DNC in Philadelphia. Angela BassettAngela Bassett working it on Day 3 wearing a sophisticated blue Karen Millen that wouldn’t look out of place on The Good Wife or Scandal; setting the right glam to serious tone. Lena Dunham and America FerreraThis is how you coordinate without looking matchy matchy and Lena Dunham’s Gabriela Hearst off the shoulder white frock is a style best and America Ferrara in a black and white Black Halo gown adds an extra punch with colorful pumps.Sarah SilvermanWhen asked to stretch things out before introducing Paul Simon (and after giving a great speech) Sarah Silverman worked the camera giving the actual Look of the Week while Al Franken went peak dad on the joke front while they waited for Simon. Silverman also kept things classic and serious with her choice of ensemble.Elizabeth BanksFrom the Day 2 walk through and I love everything about this shot of Elizabeth Banks and her fabulous paisley number.Elizabeth Banks DNCAnd for the actual thing Elizabeth Banks took a slightly more fun dress approach than some of the other celebrity speakers in a very cute Elie Saab, which works with the celeb filled and Pitch Perfect inspired “Fight Song” video that Banks helped conceive and introduced at the DNC. Elle Amanda StenbergSwitching out from the DNC to magazine covers and September issues are coming! UK Elle is taking this opportunity to give themselves a makeover with a re-design and September is the perfect time for this as it always strikes me as the month for new beginnings. All four covers go in close and look great, but it is Amandla Stenberg’s that really stood out and I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on a copy.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

A day earlier than the usual Behind the Insta-Scenes posting time and that’s because it has been jam packed with the ATX Television Festival in Austin delivering on the TV reunion front. Plus the Tony Awards and other great TV related hangouts.

Posing up a storm and the UnREAL cast continues to crush all things on Instagram (also this week’s episode is SO great).

Danai Gurira was one of our Tony Awards red carpet faves and not only is she delivering on the excellent Insta multi group shots, but she’s also given us a getting ready photo diary over at Vogue.

This is also really wonderful and showcases the hell out of Busy Philipps’ amazing frock.

More in the Tony selfie stream and Lucy Liu was one of the yellow frock delights from the night.

Lupita gifts us with a Tonys dress and accessories still life; such exquisite and detailed work.

Glenn Close looks amazing and in a ‘stars they’re just like us’ moment she’s seen her clutching heels rather than wearing them after a big event (I normally last 2 hours, maybe 3 if/when the booze kicks in).

Busy Philipps has the Jane Eyre Olympia Le-Tan book cover clutch and this Bell Jar one (as mentioned in this Tonys post) is my ultimate clutch wish list item.

You’re the Worst is now shooting season 3 and I cannot wait for more. Love the slippers, Kether.

BrainDead started last night and I liked the pilot a bunch; the leads are great and former Good Wife costume designer Daniel Lawson is giving me a whole new blazer wardrobe to covet.

Behind the scenes of this fantastic New York Magazine Tracee Ellis Ross photo shoot gives the bonus of seeing Ross dancing to Beyoncé.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

8 Jun

Co-stars supporting co-stars, returning summer shows, crushes are all included in this week’s “Behind the Insta-Scenes.” Plus plenty of stylish moments, a very cute TBT and more from the CFDA Awards.

The Mr Robot season 2 promo train is gearing up with a dash of Emmy FYC and here is an adorably stylish photo of the cast being adorable.

OITNB returns in just over a week (!) and some of the cast were in Berlin giving off serious glam vibes.

Doogie and me #TBT

UnREAL returned this week with a strong and biting premiere; here is Shiri Appleby gifting us with a Doogie Howser flashback.

Back to the present and this pairing makes me so happy; great wcw choice.

Tonight is The Americans S4 finale and Holly Taylor not only plays one of the best teens on TV, but her notebook prop from the show is so spot on with detail even if we barely get to see this stuff on screen.

Lupita Nyong’o continues to get excellent backstage visitors and this week 12 Years a Slave co-star Sarah Paulson dropped by.

Keeping on this track; the Jane the Virgin cast are coming out to support Jamie Camil’s summer turn on Broadway in Chicago.

More Jane the Virgin co-stars supporting co-stars delights.

This week I found out that Kristofer Hivju is on Instagram and my Tormund crush continues to grow.

While I’m on the subject of crushes. Oh, hello. So excited to have Scott Speedman back on TV.

We're going to an awards show

A pre-awards look from the Broad City ladies.

From one awards show to another across the pond and another excellent group of ladies hanging out.

A whole lot of You’re the Worst feelings going on and so many heart eyes at every outfit.

Shopping while shooting the Trainspotting sequel.
