Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Jul

Game of Thrones returns this Sunday (July 16) and this week’s “Out of the Box” is dominated by the HBO juggernaut with both the big LA premiere and magazine covers (see also Lena Headey’s stunner for The Edit). It is not just all GoT and there’s more fashion shows, editorials and fun cover shoots. Love is dead for Jon Snow and Ygritte (quite literally), but it is still very much alive IRL for Kit Harington and Rose Leslie on the GoT blue carpet. Plus they’re doing a couples floral theme with Harington adding some flare in jacquard Dolce & Gabbana and Leslie in a dramatic Erdem.

A brief interlude because this collaboration is VERY exciting:

Leslie is also ticking those important pocket boxes and I know that YMMV when it comes to a guy not wearing socks on the red carpet, but it very much goes with Kit’s overall look here. Plus it is summer. And who doesn’t want to wear formal slippers when they can. This is a very fun (and slightly terrifying) Vivienne Westwood frock from Nathalie Emmanuel and she’s got the perfect red lipstick for this look. Love the floral metallic heels too.Keeping with the face theme is Sophie Turner in a sparkly Louis Vuitton Resort mini dress. Turner has been at quite a few LV events recently so expect to see more of her in this brand and this looks great on her. Also getting the shimmer memo is Gwendoline Christie in this ethereal plunging number that is straight out of The Great Gatsby. It is never too early for animal print and Amanda Peet is also bringing the red lipstick power to the GoT blue carpet. This looks very warm for this time of year, but Julianne Moore is working the Calvin Klein duvet as coat vibe at Raf Simons runway show. Contrasting plaid sleeves add to the slightly bananas cool. For a more classic approach there’s Matt Bomer at the Todd Snyder – who he wore to the CFDA Awards – and he’s also gone sockless. As with Kit Harington, it works with this ensemble. Polo shirt perfection. While watching GLOW I tried to work out where I knew Gayle Rankin (Sheila) from and because I am sometimes stubborn I didn’t turn to IMDb to answer this question. Enter Interview Magazine and this fabulous profile of Rankin, which informs me that she is so familiar because I saw her in the recent Cabaret revival back in May 2014.

This profile is less about GLOW and more about her current project as she is playing Ophelia to Oscar Isaac’s Hamlet and because I am pretty basic at times, this is my favorite Shakespeare play. And I love Rankin’s Ophelia interpretation:

“The reason she kills herself is because the world has proven to her that love doesn’t exist. I get that, I understand why she’s like “Well, what’s the point? If love doesn’t exist, what’s the point?”

The shoot is also fantastic with oversized menswear, sweaters and tailored suits with the look above capturing a lot of what I am looking forward to from fall fashion.Absent from the GoT premiere, but crushing it on the cover of the new August issue of Elle is Emilia Clarke. This Dolce & Gabbana frock is giving me strong early ’90s vibes and use of lipstick print works like a charm.

In the excerpt she discusses Daenerys’ “commanding sex scene with Daario” to which she says:

“That’s a scene I’ve been waiting for!’ Because I get a lot of crap for having done nudes scenes and sex scenes. That, in itself, is so antifeminist. Women hating on other women is just the problem. That’s upsetting, so it’s kind of wonderful to have a scene where I was like, ‘There you go!”

I’m gonna have to disagree with Clarke here in that it isn’t about women hating on other women, but objecting to scenes which use “sexposition” (to use a term coined by Myles McNutt). This isn’t to say she hasn’t experienced a level of unnecessary vitriol, but the objections to the amount of nudity in GoT is not antifeminist as it is directed at the creatives rather than the actors. Or at least it should be directed at those behind the camera. Another show returning soon is Broad City (August 23) and Abbi and Ilana are on the cover of the Nylon denim issue. There are a lot of out there denim pieces to enjoy and the interview discusses their partnership as well as the new season. One factor I am looking forward to is Broad City turning from a summer show that airs in winter to a winter show airing in summer. Something I have definitely thought about more than I should.

Part of this change comes as a result of the current political climate and Ilana explains how this will impact the fabric of Broad City:

“We won’t be picking up exactly from November 9. But our timeline will be vaguely current. This season is infused with what they’re feeling—and what we’re feeling—which is something along the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Sometimes it may just be a joke, or something in the background, but we definitely want that feeling to be cohesive across the season.”

The interview also explores their creative evolution and why it is important for them to work on separate projects. While season 3 wasn’t my fave, I am excited to have these ladies and characters back soon.

Thank you, Beyoncé. This was the first image I saw when I clicked on Twitter this morning.

Best of the 2017 CFDA Fashion Awards Red Carpet

6 Jun

Awards they keep on coming and in New York last night it was time to honor the fashion designers. For a full list of the CFDA Fashion Award recipients head here and below you will find our favorite looks of the night; worn by the stars celebrating the designers who make them look so good.

This includes some award season favorites and other TV Ate My Wardrobe staples. Big trends of the night include a whole lot of shimmer, shades of yellow and ’70s inspiration continuing its recent domination. Award season wasn’t even that long ago, but we’ve missed the presence of Janelle Monáe’s in these parts. Elevating any black and white ensemble and making pretty much anything work including this Christian Siriano half jacket jumpsuit number.

Monáe was honored for her contributions to the Women’s March in February – along with Gloria Steinem and Cecile Richards – and she gave a blistering speech. Part of which you can watch below.

You can read the whole thing here.Rodarte delivers another delightfully eccentric creation and it is far from an easy outfit to pull off, but Gabrielle Union is doing just that.

The 1970s influence continues to be strong in the fashion world, much to my delight and Union’s curls lean into this trend. Bella Hadid in a fabulous fuchsia Off White blazer frock and this is giving me so many Sydney Bristow disguise feelings. I always have a soft spot for Diane Von Furstenberg and this triple offering on Haim is leaning into all the things I love about this brand. Plus stripes and polka dots. I’m not totally feeling these ankle boots, but that is a personal preference thing with white boots (unless they are on Kevin Garvey). Mary Elizabeth Winstead gives off an air of elegance in a chartreuse yellow Lela Rose, switching things up from some of the edgier looks of the night. Also adding some sparkle and a strong berry lip. Two of my favorite things.A metallic Grecian vibe for Lupita Nyong’o in Jason Wu and this dress manages to be both simple and exquisite. A touch of shimmer and Kerry Washington is on point in more ways than one in yellow Atelier Prabal Gurung.

Kerry Washington also gave great behind the scenes photos and choice of companions. Plus a close-up of Janelle Monáe’s earrings is the icing on the Insta cake.Rounding things off with the delightful Matt Bomer and yes he’s not wearing any socks, which I know can be a deal breaker when it comes to dudes in suits. And asides from some pant crinkles – even dudes need a steam station – this olive Todd Snyder suit is a hit.

2017 Costume Designers Guild Awards Winners and Red Carpet

22 Feb

Celebrating all things costume design at the 19th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards last night in LA at the Beverly Hilton with accolades getting handed out to the best in television, film and short form.

These awards are split into contemporary, fantasy and period, which means that a wide range of work is acknowledged as opposed to say the Academy Awards which tends to lean towards the more period costuming when it comes to which projects are nominated.

The award season juggernaut that is La La Land is one of the rare non-period contenders – it isn’t always period as Jenny Beavan won for Mad Max last year – and it also won last night. And for fantasy it was all about Doctor Strange.

Two of my favorite overall contenders this award season are Hidden Figures and Jackie; both were in the period category and while Madeline Fontaine recently won the BAFTA for her incredible work on Jackie it was Renee Ehrlich Kalfus who was honored by the Costume Designers Guild for her take on the early 1960s.

On the TV side there were some repeat winners with Game of Thrones and American Horror Story taking home the fantasy and contemporary accolades. The Crown’s debut season receiving the period award and the work on all three of these projects is incredible.

The red carpet was also awash with fabulous outfits from designers and those there to celebrate with them. This included some of the actors they dress on a daily basis and I want to take a moment to shine the sartorial light on both.michele-claptonThis is now the third win for Michele Clapton and Game of Thrones (sharing this award with April Ferry this year) as this show continues to dominate all things fantasy. Clapton was behind the incredible Cersei revenge ensemble and she will be returning to Westeros full time this season. This means she has to depart her other winning project and Clapton also won for The Crown last night; I particularly love all things Margaret on The Crown.

Clapton’s geometric patterned gown is a big departure from either GoT or The Crown, but there is a hint of Daenerys with her choice of choker. Plus those all important pockets tick all those boxes.hala-bahmetHala Bahmet is currently working on This is Us and she is responsible for making me want to dress like Mandy Moore in the late ’70s/early ’80s. Here she is giving great black frock and accessories.helen-huang-and-lou-eyrichThis is now Lou Eyrich’s fourth win for American Horror Story and this year she shares this with Helen Huang. I don’t always make it through a whole season of AHS (I’ve only seen Coven and Hotel in their entirety), but the costuming is always next level. As Ryan Murphy’s main costume collaborator it is no surprise to see Eyrich working on Feud and the promo shots from this mini-series are already making me drool all over the keyboard in anticipation.

Eyrich delivers on the dramatic here in a fabulous green ladysuit, oversized glasses and earrings, whereas Helen Huang is going more classic all in black. ane-crabtree-and-jimmi-simpsonAne Crabtree looks like a host from the future in a Westworld park that has yet to be made and I love the high collar detail coupled with the texture and pattern of this frock. And Jimmi Simpson has left the hat at home, but scrubs up well.lily-collinsAt first I thought this was Valentino, but instead it is Alexander McQueen and it is just as intricately beautiful on Lily Collins.amy-landeckerAmy Landecker in another fabulous ladysuit and she injects even more color by pairing it with yellow pumps. Love this entire ensemble.matt-bomerHello, handsome. The composition of this shot is great with Jane Fonda looking on and the image from Hidden Figures showcasing this costume excellence in celebratory poses.

More from the classic black attire category from both Octavia Spencer and Renee Ehrlich Kalfus. mamie-gummer-and-meryl-streepMeryl Streep was presented with the Distinguished Collaborator Award and she wore hot pink Valentino to accept this honor. Daughter Mamie Gummer’s short blonde messy bob and glasses is everything I want right now.lily-tomlin-and-jane-fondaJane Fonda not only delivers on dramatic shoulder in Versace, but she is also serving dramatic face with co-star Lily Tomlin. Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Best of 2015 Part 1

24 Dec

We have written about a lot of outfits both on and off screen this year and the 2015 Best Of series turns its attention toward our Look of the Week column, which has featured a whole host of red carpet appearances, magazine covers/editorial styling and many other sartorially infused events. Here is the first part of our “Out of the Box” rundown showcasing our favorites from a very stylish year.

Best Magazine Cover

Taraji P Henson WTaraji P. Henson has appeared on a lot of covers this year and this Diana Ross inspired shoot for W had my jaw on the floor and it is why this issue is still sat on my coffee table. What I love about this image is that it is so simple and yet so incredibly sexy in a way that is so far from Cookie (who is also incredibly sexy).

Best Cape

Ruth WilsonAt the summer TCA CBS, CW and Showtime party Ruth Wilson wore a stunning caped flamingo Valentino frock and had me dreaming of sunshine and sipping on a margarita.

Best Gingham

Lizzy CaplanFor her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Lizzy Caplan not only looked super summer cool in a black and white gingham Lela Rose dress, but she also brought up the WB with fellow guest Jon Hamm. Switching out Birkenstocks for black pumps from the backstage walk to the show also showcases how to dress up/down this outfit.

Most on Point Dress

Kate MaraWhen the movie you are promoting is set in space it might be a tad on the nose to wear a dress this intergalactic, but I say go with it and Kate Mara did just that in this stunning Valentino number.

Best Leather Jacket

Olivia WildeOlivia Wilde has been a regular in these parts for the last few months rocking a variety of styles and this leather jacket over floral Valentino (a brand doing very well in this end of year listicle) gives this an edge over the other outfit faves. Trusty red pumps have been worn on multiple occasions by Wilde and work with everything from 70s inspired to color blocking.

Best Leather Pants

Keri Russell Seth MeyersKeri Russell favors leather in all forms whether skirts, jumpsuits or pants and as her Late Night with Seth Meyers ensemble demonstrates she looks cool as fuck mixing a show tee with heels, black blazer and these leather pants. The pop of lip color gives an extra kick and I am always thankful that makeup artist Tina Turnbow shares what brands she uses (and I was very lucky to be gifted this lipstick earlier this year).

Best Playsuit

Kristen StewartPlaysuits can be hard to pull off, but Kristen Stewart is effortless chic in sequinned Zuhair Murad with legs going for miles. At the time I mentioned how much I enjoyed the fact that she lost the heels and walked most the red carpet barefoot and I still do. A lady after my own heart.

Best Jumpsuit

Rebecca FergusonRebecca Ferguson was a revelation in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and she also stood out at the London Premiere in this stunning DVF Jumpsuit. This was just before I wore my very own DVF dress at my soon to be brother-in-law’s wedding and I was very excited about all of this (as you can tell).

Best LadySuit

Amandla Stenberg#LadySuitWatch2015 has been TV Ate My Wardrobe’s most used hashtag this year and when I saw Amandla Stenberg’s Dazed photoshoot in which she rocks this look I pretty much screamed in delight. Stenberg has been killing it all over social media with her super smart and observant takes on everything from cultural appropriation to how teenagers get discredited for their opinions just because of their age. I can’t wait to see what she does in 2016.

Best Floral Suit

Michael B Jordan VogueThis year has cemented the notion that Michael B. Jordan can wear suits in any color or pattern from Vivienne Westwood plaid to textured D&G at the Met Gala. And he graced the pages of Vogue in another D&G floral suit; this time showing he could work something even bolder.

Best Polka Dots and Stripes

Emma StoneThis is pretty much my platonic ideal of any outfit.

Best Co-Star Pockets, Patterns and Giggles

Maisie and SophieThey haven’t spent any time on screen together since season 1 and photos like this of Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams have me longing for the day the Stark sisters will be reunited and then burn the place to the fucking ground. Thankfully due to all the Game of Thrones press commitments we get plenty of delightful off screen moments like this. Clothing wise Maisie Williams has pledged allegiance to dresses with pockets and Sophie Turner is doing strong patterned work here at the GoT premiere.

Best Sweater – Part 1

Matt BomerThere is nothing not adorable about this Matt Bomer look.

Best Sweater – Part 2

Cobie SmuldersIf there is one sweater I coveted more than any other in 2015 it is this Coach space themed knitwear as worn by many including Cobie Smulders at Sundance.

Best Front Row Watching at NYFW

Natasha Lyonne and Nicki MinajTwo Nickis – one real, one fictional – at the Alexander Wang NYFW runway show back in February and I am always fond of the random groupings at fashion events.

Best Fashion Campaign

Samira WileyA campaign which still makes me gasp all these months later and Samira Wiley is crushing it for Christian Siriano.

Best Lady Hangout

Broad City premiereSquad Goals is one phrase which has been used to an exhausting degree in 2015 (by myself included), but yeah I’m going to have to use it here because this is an ultimate lady hangout situation.

Stay tuned for Part 2 next week and Happy Holidays!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

30 Oct

Welcome to another installment of “Out of the Box” and this week includes a fun mix of casual cool, fancy frocks and everything in between.

Jussie Smollet and Taraji P. HensonWhen not showing off their excellent resting bitch face Taraji P. Henson and Jussie Smollett are delivering great panel attire in polka dots and plaid at Entertainment Weekly’s “EW Fest.” Henson also continues the red shoes trend and I am thankful for colorful footwear.

Matt BomerStrong sweater feelings are working overtime courtesy of Matt Bomer’s patterned knit number at the “EW Fest” especially as it is paired with a shirt and tie. Also those horn rimmed glasses. Emma Roberts’ leopard print boots are sneaking into the shot and I actually really like them; the random strapping effect on her tights, not so much.

Judy GreerSuch a delightful look from Judy Greer in Sachin & Babi Noir polka dots and stripes at the InStyle Awards.Michelle WilliamsSimultaneously adding an edge while also staying true to her twee style is Michelle Williams wearing leather Louis Vuitton and I am seriously coveting those boots.

Olivia WildeCombining two of this week’s trends – red shoes and leather – and looking all kinds of cool in floral Valentino is Olivia Wilde at the Lunchbox Fund Benefit Event.

Naomie HarrisAnother patterned delight from Valentino and this one skirts the too sheer territory; Naomie Harris is working this look at the Berlin Spectre premiere and it looks like a map from a time long ago.

Annaleigh AshfordMasters of Sex favorite and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford returns to the stage in a revival of Sylvia. Hitting the opening night red carpet in a fabulous black sequin frock and metallic pumps; Ashford also gets bonus bold lipstick points.

Maisie Williams looks far more in her comfort zone here dancing up a storm with onscreen sister Sophie Turner in a stripy tee which I’m coveting – Maisie killed it with her outfits over Comic-Con – and all I want is for the pair to be reunited onscreen so they can burn Westeros to the ground (well at least burn Ramsay to the ground).

Comic-Con Fashion Round-Up Part 1: The Entertainment Weekly Party

13 Jul

Going away the weekend Comic-Con is on means I have a lot of catching up to do this morning as this annual event continues to attract stars from a whole host of TV shows and movies, which means plenty of outfits to scroll through.

Let’s ease into the week with the Entertainment Weekly shindig and as tends to be the way at Comic-Con there are different degrees of dressed up; this variety of styling makes this a fun rundown as there’s everything from 50s style prom to funky summer dresses.

Maisie Williams EWThe texture of Maisie Williams’ dress suggests something from the ocean which ties in nicely with her oyster girl cover story from Game of Thrones as well as her recent conservation work.

Ashley MadekweAshley Madekwe could travel back to the Studio 54 heyday and blend right in wearing this amazing Saint Laurent gold dress.

Katie CassidyAs you can see from this party gold is on trend at the moment with Katie Cassidy working a glitzy floral pattern mini.

Lily JamesGoing for a slightly dressier look is Lily James in shimmery Altuzarra and she continues her fashion hot streak after a very strong Cinderella promo tour.

Sonequa Martin-GreenThe Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green is a bold pattern queen in this kaleidoscope print frock.

Matt Bomer, Sarah Paulson, Angela BassettNow this is a group I would want to hang out with at this party and Sarah Paulson’s Suno dress is rather understated for her and looks great. Angela Bassett continues to look the best in anything and Matt Bomer’s suit is far more interesting than all of his very safe Magic Mike XXL promo tour attire. Not quite sure how I feel about the super white sneakers as they instantly distract from everything else. But it also a relaxed affair so they also kinda make sense.

Danielle Panabaker EWA very cute purple frock from The Flash’s Danielle Panabaker and I love her messy fishtail braid to boot.

Candice AccolaFun summer florals from Candice Accola with her hot pink lipstick serving up an excellent extra pop of color.

Camren BicondovaCamren Bicondova from Gotham is wearing the skirt version of the Alice + Olivia dress that Aya Cash wore a couple of months ago and it looks just as great here especially when paired with a plain black tee.

Carice van HoutenCarice van Houten’s skirt looks like really fancy silk wrapping paper, but the simple blue blouse balances this look out and once again she is wearing killer lipstick.

Jennifer MorrisonThis is very much 50s fancy from Jennifer Morrison and while it is maybe a tad dressy for this event it is still rather fun. And maybe she is cosplaying Betty Draper or Libby Masters.

Music Monday: Matt Bomer’s “Untitled (How Does it Feel)” from Magic Mike XXL

6 Jul

Let’s start the week with a treat for the ears and Matt Bomer’s version of D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does it Feel)” from Magic Mike XXL. Both this final solo and his cover of “Heaven” are on the Magic Mike XXL soundtrack and while I will probably have “Pony” stuck in my head forever (which is fine) these are two of the standout musical moments from the film.

Magic Mike XXL Matt BomerYou will have to go watch Magic Mike XXL to see the actual performance (and it is well worth it) and here is an accurate representation of my face throughout:

[Source]

Just look at how great his all black outfit with a hint of sparkle is.

This isn’t the first time Bomer has sung on screen; he played Blaine’s brother on Glee and even though I haven’t seen the whole episode I did buy their version of Somebody That I Used to Know. And yes I do sing along in an enthusiastic (read terrible) manner whenever it comes on my shuffle. Plus there is this super adorable singing moment from the season 1 White Collar gag reel.

Matt Bomer discussed the reason why he ended up singing in the sequel on his recent Late Night with Seth Meyers appearance as well as his college days with co-star Joe Manganiello.

Listen to both “Untitled (How Does it Feel)” and “Heaven” below and for a very good time go watch Magic Mike XXL.

Plus here are a couple of essays which explore what makes Magic Mike XXL such a good experience from Anne Helen Petersen and Roxane Gay.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

26 Jun

Considering it is summer there is a whole lot of grey going on in this week’s relatively quiet “Out of the Box.” Not to say there aren’t some stunning looks, but there’s not a whole lot of events going on right now. Colorful bold prints including all the florals has been a big trend of late and while pattern is still on display, the tones are slightly darker and still just as striking. Plus an incredible magazine cover and a fashion campaign to make you swoon.

Taraji P Henson WSuper sexy henleys are not just for the guys on The CW and Taraji P. Henson is serving up super hot vibes in J Brand jeans and a short sleeve Theory henley (by pure coincidence as I write this I am wearing a very similar top – mine is Uniqlo – and that is where our similarity ends). This cover is stunning as are the rest of the Diane Ross inspired photos. Bonus shot and I don’t think I need to explain why.

Taraji P Henson W shoot

Speaking about why her Empire character has been a huge hit with audiences Henson explains “They see her heart. They see her intentions. And they love her style—her style is 17 years behind the fashion curve, which makes the clothes a character on the show. As Cookie grows, you’ll see her fashion grow. And people love that—she’s a work in progress. The only thing that never changes is her spirit: To me, Cookie is living, breathing, walking truth.”

Matt BomerOh, hello. Matt Bomer in the new Armani campaign and Channing Tatum accurately describes what it is like to look in Matt Bomer’s eyes on his Reddit AMA “no matter if you’re a man, woman, cat, hamster, you will get lost in matt bomer’s eyes. I don’t know what they are made of outside of dreams and rainbows and amazingness but it truly doesn’t matter. And when he sings. It’s like god gave with both hands and then grew a third hand and graced him with more. he’s crazy talented.”

Lizzy CaplanLizzy Caplan’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! was brilliant for a number of reasons including schooling both Jimmy and Jon Hamm on her greatness and also because this Lela Rose black and white gingham dress is everything. On the show Caplan wore black pumps and yet I am leaning in favor of the super comfortable sandals, because my feet are attuned to picking comfy cool. Gingham has been big on the runway this year and Caplan is delivering the ideal version of this look.

Kiernan Shipka CoachAt the 5th annual Coach and Friends of the High Line Summer Party Kiernan Shipka is decked out head to toe in well, Coach including a patterned bandana. This shouldn’t work with the patchwork nature of the frock and it might be Shipka fashion blindness but she is working all these pieces and looks charming in the process. The chunky ‘Harla’ wedges with the flash of red nail color gives this fall collection ensemble a much needed dose of summer.

Ideal summer vibes outfit and food choice from Jenny Slate.

I miss Jane the Virgin. Luckily most of the cast are big Instagram users and there’s a lot of pre-Emmy chat surrounding this show.

This drink looks really good and I love when TV friendships spawn into IRL forever BFFs (that’s a whole lot of caps).

Just remember to lock it up. Don’t want Hannah to lose another bike (after that episode last season I became extra paranoid every time I locked my bike up).
