2018 Emmy Nomination Wish List

11 Jul

Emmy nominations are just a day away! But before the cheers and jeers after the names have been read, here is a rundown of who I would love to see among the nominees tomorrow. Some are definite locks, some are long shots; all turned in amazing performances. I have tried to keep it to one pick per show — with some obvious exemptions — and separated them into drama, comedy and mini-series.

Obviously this is my list and so some of your faves might not feature. There is just too much TV. And I’ve probably also forgotten a performance I love. But these are the ones that have stuck with me.

Drama Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys – The Americans

No shocker here. They have been first on the list on my Emmy nomination wish list since I started this annual tradition, there was no way they weren’t going to be first for this one last time. The final season delivered in every single way, right down to the devastating finale.

Both Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys gave a weekly master class in how to say so much, often without barely saying a word. The things these actors do with the silence. Or a gasp. For that moment alone, Keri Russell should be taking home the very pointy trophy. Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer – Killing Eve

Again, I can’t just choose one. There is something so magnetic about Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, both when they are facing off against each other and as part of the cat-and-mouse game. Killing Eve is one of the best new shows of the year; Oh and Comer are integral to keeping the narrative grounded when the action gets a bit more outlandish.Thandie Newton – Westworld

Maeve’s hunt for her daughter gave Thandie Newton the chance to show both vulnerability and fierceness in equal measure. Westworld is a show that I admire more than I love, but anytime Newton is on screen I feel less like the show is holding me at arm’s length. Maeve makes me care about the fate of these beings, more than simply intrigued about the puzzle element of Westworld.  Yvonne Strahovski – The Handmaid’s Tale

There are many standout moments from Yvonne Strahovski on season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale; the one I can’t stop thinking about isn’t from the roster devastating scenes where her face crumples or she actively partakes in this oppressive system. Instead it is the moment in “Smart Power” as they drive through the streets of Canada; this is the world how it was. A flicker of sadness at how her life used to be. Serena Joy attempts to act defiant while in Canada, to show she is unashamed and yet embarrassment is hard to hide when these reminders lurk at every elevator.

Serena Joy is complicit, but Yvonne Strahovski’s performance makes it hard not to feel some level of empathy. As with Serena Joy in that car, it is hard to look away.  Vanessa Kirby – The Crown

Withering looks, the perfect put down; I need Vanessa Kirby to show me how to get this level of sardonic perfection. But there is the other side to Margaret, the cracks in the facade. The loneliness and bitter feelings, the desperate desire to be loved. I am going to miss Kirby as the Queen’s little sister (even if I cannot wait to see what HBC brings to the table). No one smokes cigarettes quite as sulkily as Kirby.Sarah Steele – The Good Fight

From the first time I saw Sarah Steele in Please Give it was love. And I am so happy that she made the move from The Good Wife to The Good Fight. The second season perfectly captured the mood of this turbulent political time; Marissa managed to be the voice of reason, humor and major scene-stealer who kept her head when shots were fired.

Comedy

Bill Hader – Barry

For the Macbeth moment alone, which I realize should be filed under “quietly devastating” rather than hilarious. But I can’t stop thinking about it. Never has this play made me feel quite like I have been punched in the stomach.

There are many other very funny moments though, in which Bill Hader’s comic timing is pretty much perfection. As he tries to spill his innermost demons and everyone seems to think he is referring to acting. Also the whole wearing an outfit that Barry saw on a J. Crew mannequin is one of the best costume moments of the year.  Zazie Beetz – Atlanta

Season 2 of Atlanta is a gift. I could pick the entire regular cast, but I am going to single out Zazie Beetz for her work in “Helen.” As with a lot of “Robbin’ Season” there is something disorientating about the episode. They are in an entirely different location, pretty much everyone is in traditional German dress. There are actual demons. But ultimately it is about this central paring; Earn can’t give Van what she desires. He is getting in his own way. To see this relationship disintegrate over the space of half an hour highlights just how good Atlanta is as well as giving Beetz the chance to shine in Van’s disappointment.Betty Gilpin and Alison Brie – GLOW

Emmy voters will be looking at season 1 of GLOW, but it probably doesn’t harm the show’s chances that season 2 has just landed. Both Betty Gilpin and Alison Brie give standout performances as they grapple with their friendship fallout, the betrayal and having to work together. When Ruth asks Debbie if she wants to get a drink after the bitterness has cooled, the response that they might never be back at this place is a gut punch. And one that makes so much sense. It isn’t that easy to fix this.

Also the physicality of their work on GLOW is incredible.Yael Grobglas – Jane the Virgin

Mid-way through writing these comedy dream Emmy noms and I realize every single one has made me cry. But those are my fave kinds of comedies; the ones that make you feel all the feelings. Petra has been on a journey; on this season of Jane the Virgin she has softened, let herself be vulnerable and found love with JR (Rosario Dawson). This is one of several very good bisexuality storylines on TV this year and this essay by Caroline Framke on how bisexuality is no longer a TV punchline is very good.Rachel Brosnahan – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Again, I love a comedy performance that also makes me weep. I recently rewatched the finale of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and these were tears of joy. Rachel Brosnahan talks at one hundred miles per hour, but every word is worth paying attention to. And she is damn hilarious. Oh, and I would very much like all of her coats. Please and thank youThe Alvarez Family – One Day at a Time

Don’t make me pick one member of the Alvarez family, instead Rita Moreno, Justina Machado, Isabella Gomez and Marcel Ruiz are all here. Again, this show makes me cry a lot. And laugh. It is the perfect show for these times; it gets to the heart of working class issues as well as immigration, depression and sexuality. It is also hilarious.

Mini-SeriesCody Fern – American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace

There are a number of standouts in the second American Crime Story; Darren Criss dazzled, Queen Judith Light broke me in two as she took her makeup off, but it is relative newcomer Cody Fern that I want to single out. Over just a few episodes Fern crafted a performance that gave so much life to David Madson before his tragic death. Often in true crime it is the killer that gets the spotlight, the victims are just a footnote (see People v. OJ) and while this is clearly Andrew’s story, the time spent with Andrew coupled with Fern’s nuanced turn means David is more than just a name on a list.

A lot of it is conjecture as we’ll never know what happened in those days, but thankfully the show reinforces Madson’s innocence after the initial police investigation did the opposite. Sarah Gadon – Alias Grace

Sarah Gadon gives a captivating and magnetic turn as Grace Marks. Nothing is quite as it seems and I am in awe of everything Gadon does in this mini-series that wasn’t talked about as much as it should have been. Instead it is another Margaret Atwood adaptation that gets all the plaudits. There is enough awards love to share between the two. Taylor Kitsch – Waco

So it turns out I have been getting Waco and Jonestown mixed up, so while this wasn’t about drinking the Kool-Aid (or its cheaper alternative) there is something about Taylor Kitsch as David Koresh that has me buying into the whole thing. Was Waco too sympathetic toward the cult leader? Perhaps. But Kitsch delivered on the magnetic charm of things and the show made sure that neither side was painted as the innocent party. He also somehow makes serial killer specs and that mullet work.Kyle MacLachlan – Twin Peaks: The Return

This time last year was spent obsessing over Twin Peaks. Part of that was trying to figure out when the real Agent Dale Cooper would show up. Kyle MacLachlan had several different characters to play throughout the return of Twin Peaks; all completely different from the other. Give this guy the Emmy he deserves.

Emmy nominations will be announced tomorrow by Samira Wiley and Ryan Eggold at 11.30 am EST. The Emmy Awards will be hosted Monday, September 17.

Best of the 2018 SAG Awards: Bold Color and Florals

22 Jan

More SAG Awards red carpet treats to kick-start your week. For everything that sparkles head here, below you will find a lot of florals, some strong color, plenty of couple goals and a pair that made my shipper heart all the happier. What better way to start the second part of this round-up than with Mary Steenburgen in forest green with a floral sandals peeping out from the bottom.

Why yes I did get a little teary at the end of the recent Good Place. I love that Steenburgen and Ted Danson are currently starring in two of my favorite comedies at the moment. Velvet isn’t just for suits as Felicity Huffman demonstrates in a plunging Monsoori. William H. Macy won for Shameless and this pair continues to win my heart. Everything about this shot makes my heart feel fuller. Looking great to boot; Chelsea Peretti wears Needle and Thread, Jordan Peele is in Valentino. Sterling K. Brown and Ryan Michelle Bathe have become permanent fixtures on here during award season. From tuxedo twinning at the Golden Globes to this delicate Germy Maalouf floral bodice gown. Brown won Best Actor for This is Us and looks cool af in Armani. Check out young Randall’s amazing tux here.

And he continues to give great speeches.
This is Us won Ensemble in a Drama in what was one of the big surprises of the night. While I think at times this show can be super emotionally manipulative (as the tears stream down my face), the acting is always top notch. Mandy Moore, Chrissy Metz and Susan Kelechi Watson are all in the same shade of blue, which can’t be a coincidence.

As far as speeches go this is also a very good one as Milo Ventimiglia makes sure he thanks the production team from top to bottom. Striking a stylish tone in white and matching her TV family on the sartorial scale is Tracee Ellis Ross in Ralph & Russo. And Gucci continues to deliver stylish whimsy as demonstrated by Brie Larson in this pretty floral number. Thankfully Jane the Virgin returns this Friday (January 26), but in the meantime feast your eyes on Yael Grobglas in shoulder ruffles and Gina Rodriguez mixing delicate florals with a severe dark bodice in Rasario Resort. Orangy lips to match the orange flowers on Zoe Kazan’s Miu Miu dress and this is a great look from H to T (always channeling my inner Tyra). Last Jedi fave, Kelly Marie Tran looks stunning in Mary Katrantzou. There are so many ways to do fancy florals. This is a knockout.Queen Ann Dowd looking super regal in Escada. Bow down. A jumpsuit? A dress? Either way Sally Hawkins in chevron Dior Haute Couture is a wacky treat on this SAG red carpet.Big Little Lies sandwich of happiness.
Be still my shipper heart. Exhibit A.

Exhibit B. Great lipstick too, Winona.

Jane the Virgin returned this week much to my teary eyed joy and this cast continues to deliver on the social media behind the scenes front. Plus we have a week of super stylish moments including Insta postcards from Cannes, costume secrets and more.

Kicking off again with Gil and George because I really want to see Oh, Hello again and because the guest stars keep on coming. Care Delevingne (just know I’m doing the Reese voice) is essentially wearing lounge wear including boob slippers, which actually feels entirely appropriate for this show.

The cast that watches their season premiere together, stays together.

From the Jane the Virgin season 3 premiere and what the cast looks like all aged up. Just let it be known that this was the part of the episode where I went from welling up, to single tear and quickly followed by double eye sobbing. This show.

While I am strongly Team Michael this is very flame emoji and I cannot wait for whatever fantasy sequence will deliver this costuming delight.

There’s a new Crazy Ex-Girlfriend theme and while I’m definitely going to miss singing along to “she’s so broken inside” I really love the aesthetic and vibe of this new one.

More Mad Men costume flashbacks from January Jones and the time Jones was pregnant meaning Betty had to put on weight.

Regular readers will know that I have major Stephanie Beatriz glasses envy and this collection really is everything. Saving this picture for when I get a new prescription.

Constance Zimmer and Shiri Appleby have been in Cannes for a television industry event and it was hard to narrow down my picture choice to just two as they have been crushing it.

I am so happy it is fall for knitwear reasons and this is very chic example. When in France.

Fall TV premiere dates inch closer – and You’re the Worst is back tonight! – and so plenty of behind the scenes promo is occurring. Plus fabulous guest stars, guest directors and one show is almost forever finished shooting.

A lot of beard to kick off this week’s Insta highlights with Kristofer Hivju and Michael Fassbender. Future Fassy in Game of Thrones possibilities are probably low, but this wouldn’t be his first HBO venture as he was in a couple of Band of Brothers episodes.

And then Zooey Deschanel under an umbrella wearing a headband and check shirt look that I will no doubt be after when this episode airs.

Also back the same week on Fox is Empire and Taraji P. Henson gives a little costume sneak peek featuring some very large hooped earrings.

From the summer TCA and the Mr Robot ladies continue to crush it.

To be filed under “this is kind of cool, but also creepy as fuck.”

Eva Longoria is directing an episode of Jane the Virgin this season and everyone is very pleased with this. Also the amount of Brett Dier popping up in these shots would suggest Michael is not going to be dearly departed.

And a ladies only version. I am thrilled to see Bridget Regan kicking it on set.

While we won’t get to see the final season of Girls until early next year, the show is currently wrapping up and these final days are getting the Instagram treatment.

And polaroids to mark Zosia Mamet and Jemima Kirke’s last day shooting.

BrainDead continues to be my favorite show of the summer, but the last two weeks have been lacking any Gustav so hopefully the next episode will rectify this.

Happy You’re the Worst Day! I am so ready.

This sounds like everything I would ever want from a Marnie storyline. She would be so perfect for this.

Matthew Rhys and his glorious beard are guest starring on the final season of Girls. Sadly no details are available yet so time to conjure up your best pairing for him. I am not so secretly hoping he will have something to do with Adam. Fun connection time – Matthew Rhys and Adam Driver shared the stage back in 2012 in Look Back in Anger and this also happened to be the play that got the Americans casting director interested in Rhys for Philip Jennings.

TV Instagram is busy again with a lot of shows back from hiatus and this week’s behind the scenes highlights include Jane the VirginYou’re the Worst and iZombie. Plus we have TCA style, Rachel Bloom’s male gaze take on casting notices and a Sex and the City project I do want to see.

While we’re on the subject of changing hair and it will come as no surprise that I love a good hiatus beards, but there is not much that can be done to hide this level of grizzle. For Justin Baldoni the beard now only exists in the form of old photos and future hiatus dreams.

After posting a photo of the super depressing casting notices from Backstage, Rachel Bloom wrote some very similar sounding descriptions for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend characters but with a male gaze. “Singing a plus.”

Best of the 2016 Upfronts Red Carpet: Day 1

17 May

Upfronts time and this means plenty of returning and new faces to network events as schedules are announced along with the trailers for shows that could either be here for a few episodes, multiple seasons or anywhere in-between. Day 1 includes Fox, NBC and the Entertainment Weekly and People Upfronts party. Let’s kick off this post with the new show I am most looking forward to from Fox and the return of Leighton Meester and Adam Pally to TV.

And now for the best of the red carpet. As with PaleyFest, TCAs and Comic-Con there is a mixture of fancy to casual with some new additions to #LadySuitWatch2016 in the mix.Leighton MeesterA very chic and relaxed outfit from Leighton Meester and the one person who makes me want to do a Gossip Girl rewatch. Plus she will be getting to show off her comedy chops and for anyone who watched Gossip Girl you will already know what great comic timing Meester has. Last Man on EarthOn the Last Man on Earth finale Phil shaved off his very hairy side and Will Forte looks a whole lot less scary than the last time he graced these pages. I am very glad I returned to Last Man on Earth after ditching early in season 1 as it is a wonderful and often very bizarre show; it is good to see network TV embracing comedies of this kind.

January Jones looks great in a white ladysuit and red lipstick and Kristen Schaal’s giving me so many collar related feels. I also love that Schaal is a big fan of flats making her very much a woman after my own heart.Jussie SmolettJussie Smollett crushing it in a bold blue number and doing the top button done up/no tie thing with aplomb.Rami Malek and Christian SlaterAnother fan of this style choice is Rami Malek, but at the NBC upfront he is leaning much more into his casual preferences. Still top button done up, but in a patterned number with a Members Only like jacket.

Christian Slater also opts for something similar as this pair does the Mr Robot rounds and now might be a good time to tell you to watch the new season 2 promo.

The “infinite loop of insanity” continues and I really want Darlene’s heart shape glasses.Rami Malek and Portia DoubldayMoving on to the Entertainment Weekly and People party, but keeping on the Mr Robot track with Rami Malek changing his top half for this shindig. #LadySuitWatch2016 points for co-star Portia Doubleday in a classic looking black number. The only thing I would maybe switch out here is a more colorful pump.Tracee Ellis RossTracee Ellis Ross mixes business with party in a buttoned white plunging stunner.Vanessa Hudgens and America FerreraVanessa Hudgens goes full boho in a 70s inspired sheer and metallic Haney dress and a fantastic looking America Ferrera in red lace floral and strappy shoes at the EW and People Upfront event.

R U WATCHING!!?? #UnbreakableKimmySchmidt #netflix 😻

A post shared by Anna Camp (@therealannacamp) on

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is back and unlike Daredevil S2 I haven’t stalled at the halfway mark (I’ll get back to Daredevil, but there are just so many other shows taking priority right now). Kimmy starts off on the patchy side as one early plot doesn’t quite stick the landing, but the jokes are stacked and so wonderfully random at times. I am still thinking about the Rob Kardashian sock designer reference. Kimmy’s style has given me lots of inspiration for spring and Anna Camp is an A+ guest star choice.

And while we’re on the subject of amazing Kimmy Schmidt guest stars; I yelled WHAT?! so loud at my screen that I had to rewind the scene. Everything about this moment from the deconstruction of Dawson’s Creek to that haircut and costume is perfect.

Season 5 of Girls has been a triumph from Marnie’s wedding to Marnie’s one night adventure all the way to the two-part finale which got me misty eyed on several occasions. One surprise this season was how much they leaned into the Jessa/Adam pairing much to my delight and here Adam Driver definitely has his fighting face at the ready.

There has been a lot of Coachella on Instagram this week and Amandla Stenberg is avoiding all the fashion cliches of this festival looking cool as fuck in this very 90s look. Not a choker or flower crown in sight. And this could easily be a new print ad for Calvin Klein; it is that good.

Aya Cash and Kether Donohue’s version of Coachella is much more my speed.

Looking like the back of a gown on Say Yes to the Dress with Aaron Tveit on a photo shoot.

Alison Wright got to wear a wig on TV this week; nope Martha hasn’t gone undercover and instead this is for the HBO movie Confirmation. Here is Wright with co-star Wendell Pierce.

Another costume stunner from Salvador Perez on The Mindy Project.

This is all very exciting and I am so ready for season 2 of UnREAL.

Busy Philipps giving me so many Freaks and Geeks related feelings. The instant I see that blue coat it makes me so very happy. The caption here is also excellent.

While I’m dealing with feelings, here seems like a good place to end this week.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

30 Mar

If this week’s Instagram collection could be summed up in one emoji it would be heart eyes as there are plenty of co-stars hanging out treats on offer with a strong dose of cute.

Kicking off this week with a big scoop of adorable and Rami Malek hanging with co-star Portia Doubleday’s dog Logan.

Da fuck?

A post shared by Carly Chaikin (@carlychaikin) on

Keeping on the Mr Robot train and on set selfies from the new season that don’t reveal anything new, but I heart regardless. Heavy Darlene eyeliner is always welcome.

Everything about this photo is charming as hell and now I want this coupling to be a very real thing.

Girls is on a hot streak this season and this week’s Marnie-centric episode was as triumphant as Allison Williams looks in this photo.

Flashing back to simpler times and pre whatever happened that caused Christopher Abbott to leave Girls under a cloud. But he did return and boy did we get a much more beardy Charlie in the process and this episode really is top tier Girls. It was good to see him again even if it was tinged with the tragedy of what has since become of Charlie. I miss that awesome bed he made.

Praise is justifiably heaped on Jane the Virgin from so many different angles and visually it continues to be striking in fresh and new ways. Everyone here looks spectacular.

They also kill it in motion.

In exactly 12 weeks… #OITNBS4 #84days #comethru

A post shared by Samira Wiley (@whododatlikedat) on

The OITNB countdown has begun and I cannot wait to spend more time with these ladies.

One thing I spend more time thinking about than is maybe necessary is whether actors end up falling asleep during sleeping scenes or in this case in a pile of laundry after fake taking a lot of drugs. And the answer looks like yes.

Happy Easter. Love, #NewGirl #SingerSongwriters

A post shared by jake johnson (@mrjakejohnson) on

Album cover ready.

Basketball being played on set between takes gives me instant ER vibes and I’m also enjoying how these poses both resemble a superhero stance and shooting hoops.

This is very cute and I am happy Elementary has been renewed for season 5.

Keeping on the cute theme and sadly my request to keep this going for forever has been denied and the Room promo tour is officially over.

It’s not an Anthora coffee cup, but regardless I’m getting Bob Benson flashbacks.

Diane Kruger models this Coach sweater that I would like to see in my closet and also on TV Ate My Wardrobe sweater queen Chelsea Peretti.

Happy birthday to a most loving and devoted lady @amysedaris Xxx

A post shared by SJP (@sarahjessicaparker) on

Instagram is a platform used for many things including celebrities wishing each other happy birthday in picture form. Sarah Jessica Parker took this opportunity to post not one, but a whopping nine pictures celebrating the incredible Amy Sedaris and it only made me love SJP even more.

Justin Theroux went with a more sedate two, but this one is also fabulous.

It’s like Aya Cash reached into my brain with this picture/caption. The world needs more Melanie Laurent.
