Out of the Box: Look of the Week

29 Sep

For all the ’70s inspired looks—of which there are still are many—the decade that follows is inching its way back in the style stakes. I am less thrilled about this turn of events because the ’80s feels a little overplayed, but that doesn’t mean I am completely immune.

September is almost at an end, but there is still A LOT going on including galas, premieres and other various events. This week there is also dominated by pattern, which I am so here for. Speaking of which, here is my interview with costume designer Lorraine Calvert talking all things 1970s menswear and Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House. Garish patterns are my fave.  Lupita Nyong’o gives great red carpet no matter the style code and at the 2017 Global Citizen Festival in Central Park she looks cool af in Gucci pink metallic bomber jacket, loafers and super round sunglasses. Also working the tee of the event to great effect. Vampire’s Wife is a brand that continues to deliver on the romantic infused ruffled delights and now January Jones is getting in on the action. This mini metallic floral number is one of the reasons I’m thinking a ’80s revival isn’t so bad. Also, Last Man on Earth is back on Sunday (October 1) and I cannot wait. Airbnb is getting into the tour business and for the ultimate SATC experience they’ve enlisted Carrie Bradshaw herself, for this one-off event. It is of course sold out (there were only four spaces) and at the launch, SJP gives the best in fall fashion in a floral frock and contrasting belt. Sparkly pumps are always a winner too.

And while I am on the topic of perfect floral frocks for fall; here is Yvette Nicole Brown looking fabulous at a screening of The Mayor, in a dress from Anthropologie that is the most autumn of color palettes. Anna Chlumsky is doing some wonderful things on a wonderful season of Halt and Catch Fire and at the Metropolitan Opera Opening Night she looks incredible in Christian Siriano. The peplum structure and window pane detail makes this a standout frock and the orange tone lipstick and nails are the perfect boost of color. From the opera to the ballet and Keri Russell in a look that is very Americans era appropriate and while Philip and Elizabeth don’t get to go undercover at fancy events, if they did then it would look a bit like this. But with more wigs. This is another frilled number from Johanna Ortiz and I was surprised that she didn’t wear this designer to the Emmys.More from the ballet and Michelle Monaghan ups the drama levels in a colorful and floaty Prabal Gurung dress.

Maggie Gyllenhall is up there with Tracee Ellis Ross and Elisabeth Moss for the best Instagram BTS shots of outfits she has been wearing and this red dress by Ryan Roche is a stunner. Also, I finally started watching The Deuce and Maggie does not disappoint. Also here is an interesting piece about why this show is getting it right. The thread that has given me the most joy on Twitter over the last few months is Fiona’s deep dive into the style similarities between Cate Blanchett and Harry Styles. It is truly the gift that keeps on giving and we haven’t even had the Thor promo tour yet.

Harry has of course been wearing some A+ suits this year and there isn’t a pattern he isn’t afraid to wear. Case in point; this very jester like Gucci (of course) ensemble at the iHeartRadio Music Festival is perfect for a performance and nod to the New Romantics.

Busy Philipps is My Friend: The Instagram Story Impact

28 Sep

The reason I started watching Instagram Stories was because of Busy Philipps. The reason I started doing my own Instagram Stories was because of Busy Philipps. And now Busy is getting the New Yorker ‘Persons of Interest’ treatment. Yes, I found out about this on Instagram.

Social media allows you to carefully curate what you want the world to see; there are aspirational influencer elements of brand building and giving a sneak peek into the lives of the rich and the famous mixed in with seeing a friend’s walk to work. Up to 15-second clips that last only 24-hours and can tell you absolutely nothing about what is really going on. And the amount of time you can spend watching and skipping through these videos/photos and Boomerangs (which I mostly despise, despite doing some on the odd occasion) can feel infinite. Just don’t hit the ‘Watch All’ option.

Snapchat did it first, but I found it mostly impenetrable and this is the first time an app has made me feel old. I downloaded and deleted in the space of a day.

The above photo was chosen after I came across this tweet, which is definitely on brand.

I was also always going to be susceptible to certain celebs using this format and while January Jones is still queen of Insta comments and captions, Busy had my heart in an instant with her almost daily updates. There’s the “Hey guys” greeting that adds an extra level of familiarity and because of where they take place there is a certain level of intimacy; in her bedroom, car, kitchen, while walking down the street, working out, in a restaurant.

The “Just Like Us” vibe isn’t restricted to location and the way Busy talks about her anxiety, frustrations, her skin—I too am a picker—and career ups and downs, the shit that is going on in the world and eating habits is also #highlyrelatable. See also the way she talks about the TV she watches including old reruns of Friends.

But the joy of Busy’s Stories also comes from getting access to places we are not so likely to experience; the bathroom at an award show, working on a movie set or making a music video. When else am I going to hear Michelle Williams jokingly swear after losing out on the Oscar to Viola Davis? The familiar is tangled up in the glamorous and while I have never been to the Golden Globes, I have been locked out of my house in the rain after a night out.

Busy is incredibly popular on Instagram for a lot of the reasons and if this is the 15-second equivalent to a sitcom then there is one regular guest star who I am always thrilled to see. This connection goes back almost twenty years—yeah now I really feel old—and the occasional appearance by Busy’s bestie, Michelle Williams, is an instant nostalgia trip that also points to how some relationships in Hollywood are forever.

I’ve written at length about hair influences and how much I heart this power couple and the pair couldn’t be more different when it comes to their social media habits. For starters, Michelle Williams doesn’t partake and even before personal tragedy, Williams came across as guarded. These appearances lack any kind of pretense; whether during award season or hanging out at a very Dawson’s Creek location, as they reminisce about the actors Williams kissed on the show. Sometimes actors get a little precious about where they got their start and thankfully there is no such BS here. Instead it is tales of smooching.

Between Busy at Lekfit and Gina Rodriguez’s pull up bar—another Stories fave—there is also a better living kind of motivation. Not that I have started either, but I have bought some workout clothes so edging ever so closer to this. I am nothing if not prepared when it comes to having the right outfit.

Plus there are these kind of top notch observations that you can expect as TV costuming intersects with my Insta viewing habits.

And while experiencing my own existential and career related woes there is something comforting and motivating about Busy’s own musings on these subjects. Also seeing her procrastinating when it comes to writing is perhaps the most relatable. She says while picking up her phone to see what is going on elsewhere.

You know, Kim Kelly is my friend and so is Busy.* And now I’m going to go rewatch some Freaks and Geeks and contemplate the pros and cons of buying a mini-trampoline.

*This sounds far creepier than intended

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

19 Oct

Jane the Virgin returned this week much to my teary eyed joy and this cast continues to deliver on the social media behind the scenes front. Plus we have a week of super stylish moments including Insta postcards from Cannes, costume secrets and more.

Kicking off again with Gil and George because I really want to see Oh, Hello again and because the guest stars keep on coming. Care Delevingne (just know I’m doing the Reese voice) is essentially wearing lounge wear including boob slippers, which actually feels entirely appropriate for this show.

The cast that watches their season premiere together, stays together.

From the Jane the Virgin season 3 premiere and what the cast looks like all aged up. Just let it be known that this was the part of the episode where I went from welling up, to single tear and quickly followed by double eye sobbing. This show.

While I am strongly Team Michael this is very flame emoji and I cannot wait for whatever fantasy sequence will deliver this costuming delight.

There’s a new Crazy Ex-Girlfriend theme and while I’m definitely going to miss singing along to “she’s so broken inside” I really love the aesthetic and vibe of this new one.

More Mad Men costume flashbacks from January Jones and the time Jones was pregnant meaning Betty had to put on weight.

Regular readers will know that I have major Stephanie Beatriz glasses envy and this collection really is everything. Saving this picture for when I get a new prescription.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

13 Oct

As I have been away for a couple of weeks some of these Instagram highlights are from during that time period.

Now for some behind the scenes of how I choose which pictures I include; while I’m scrolling through I’ll screengrab the ones that catch my eye and because I wasn’t on the internet all that much while on honeymoon/during wedding prep this will be a lighter week, but a fun collection nonetheless featuring a lot of my favorite shows/people.

Next time everything will be back to regular transmission.

Our first proper night in New York was spent in the company of Gil and George (charmed, I’m sure) and as a huge fan of the “too much tuna” sketch on Kroll Show this stage production was everything I hoped it would be and more. Funny and so dark in places, that I was equal parts laughing and picking my jaw up off the floor.

This fun photo collage of the evolution of this sketch is also a delight.

There is still time for some 2016 Emmy coverage and this photo Tom Cullen posted of Tatiana Maslany links nicely into Orphan Black and my desire to get drinks and go dancing with them.

Speaking of Orphan Black and they are back on set for the fifth and final season. Helena is coming to play and this always makes me very happy.

Also it just occurred to me that a lot of shows I hold close to my heart are getting the chance to wrap up on their own terms (see also The AmericansHalt and Catch Fire and The Leftovers). Sure, it is a bummer they will be over soon(ish), but also such a relief they will get a proper ending to their story.

Westeros 2015

Also on this list is Game of Thrones (although it was never in doubt that they would get to choose their end date unlike some of those shows listed above) and this is very fun flashback to 2015 from Carice van Houten.

Two more seasons of The Americans (*sob*) and day one of season five already has me excited for the skirt/boot combination Keri Russell is wearing (even in this is an out of focus shot).

To the woman who creates these Americans costumes surrounded by her work and this photo of costume designer Katie Irish is a stunner.

And to a show that is over, but not in our hearts or January Jones’ Insta and these costume shots from Janie Bryant are always a welcome sight.

Now for a closer look at the hair, makeup and costuming Shantel VanSanten wore on the Timeless premiere – a show that is tremendous amounts of fun from both a story and costume perspective – and I love the detail in her description here. Also so much lipstick coveting.

Constance Zimmer shared a piece of fan art that celebrates the many characters she has played on TV and it is wonderful.

No hot sauce required.

A couple of style highlights include Lupita Nyong’o on the Queen of Katwe press tour crushing it all over the place.

Followed by Jenny Slate going full vintage in this fabulous casual look.

Ending things this week with a couple of very important things from the Broad City Instagram including the best dog ever (Tom Hiddleston you look okay too).

As a Top 5 Americans disguise it feels right to finish this first “Behind the Insta-Scenes” post after being away with this joyous moment. Abbi and Ilana, I’m sure would agree.

Keeping with the sunglasses trend and adding a big dose of “holy crap this is adorable” from Lucy Liu with her son Rockwell on the set of Elementary.

Fun getting ready pictures of Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys’ trip to the White House last night from hair stylist Brian Magallones. Cue every Russian spy joke ever and it would appear that the Obamas are fans of The Americans as they scored a prime spot at the state dinner table. Excellent dress choice by Keri Russell and a nice prelude to the Emmys next month.

A reminder that I still need to watch BoJack Horseman. I don’t know how I have let it get to three seasons without seeing any (I know).

An important look back from Brie Larson. We are so lucky to have her share this experience in relation to where she was and where she is now. And also that dress is wonderful. Sometimes what you have in your closet is all you need.

It’s all fun and games in Maureen when things aren’t getting set on fire/people aren’t being stabbed.

After recently marathoning my way through the first two seasons of iZombie I’ve still got that post-watch emptiness (see also OITNB) so even though there isn’t a season 3 premiere date yet, it is good to see some of the cast back on iZombie duty.

There are lots of reasons to be excited about this new season of You’re the Worst and one of them is this amazing casting news.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BG5HHynGtsh/?taken-by=mewins&hl=en

On BrainDead Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Tveit danced together. It was magical. As is this prom style pic.

While a lot of the FNL cast were in Austin for the ATX Television Festival; Aimee Teegarden, Taylor Kitsch, Zach Gilford and Minka Kelly were taking part in the Spartan Race. Another reunion I can get behind. Even with Kitsch’s mustache.

This is from a couple of weeks ago (when I covered the outfits from this event), but somehow I missed it and I’m making up for that now.

Joshua Jackson and Kiernan Shipka doing their best January Jones pose might be my new favorite thing.

The way to get two entries is to quote from Overboard. Always an instant YES in my book/blog.

Best of the 2016 Upfronts Red Carpet: Day 1

17 May

Upfronts time and this means plenty of returning and new faces to network events as schedules are announced along with the trailers for shows that could either be here for a few episodes, multiple seasons or anywhere in-between. Day 1 includes Fox, NBC and the Entertainment Weekly and People Upfronts party. Let’s kick off this post with the new show I am most looking forward to from Fox and the return of Leighton Meester and Adam Pally to TV.

And now for the best of the red carpet. As with PaleyFest, TCAs and Comic-Con there is a mixture of fancy to casual with some new additions to #LadySuitWatch2016 in the mix.Leighton MeesterA very chic and relaxed outfit from Leighton Meester and the one person who makes me want to do a Gossip Girl rewatch. Plus she will be getting to show off her comedy chops and for anyone who watched Gossip Girl you will already know what great comic timing Meester has. Last Man on EarthOn the Last Man on Earth finale Phil shaved off his very hairy side and Will Forte looks a whole lot less scary than the last time he graced these pages. I am very glad I returned to Last Man on Earth after ditching early in season 1 as it is a wonderful and often very bizarre show; it is good to see network TV embracing comedies of this kind.

January Jones looks great in a white ladysuit and red lipstick and Kristen Schaal’s giving me so many collar related feels. I also love that Schaal is a big fan of flats making her very much a woman after my own heart.Jussie SmolettJussie Smollett crushing it in a bold blue number and doing the top button done up/no tie thing with aplomb.Rami Malek and Christian SlaterAnother fan of this style choice is Rami Malek, but at the NBC upfront he is leaning much more into his casual preferences. Still top button done up, but in a patterned number with a Members Only like jacket.

Christian Slater also opts for something similar as this pair does the Mr Robot rounds and now might be a good time to tell you to watch the new season 2 promo.

The “infinite loop of insanity” continues and I really want Darlene’s heart shape glasses.Rami Malek and Portia DoubldayMoving on to the Entertainment Weekly and People party, but keeping on the Mr Robot track with Rami Malek changing his top half for this shindig. #LadySuitWatch2016 points for co-star Portia Doubleday in a classic looking black number. All that is missing is some super red lipstick to really complete the ensemble.Samira WileySamira Wiley’s got the lipstick thing right and gives her cool LBD a color injection with a funky striped clutch. Orange is the New Black returns in a month and you can watch the promo here.Yael GrobglasMaybe this will be the summer I finally invest in a jumpsuit and my bravery levels will probably extend to a classic black number like this one worn by Yael Grobglas. The only thing I would maybe switch out here is a more colorful pump.Tracee Ellis RossTracee Ellis Ross mixes business with party in a buttoned white plunging stunner.Vanessa Hudgens and America FerreraVanessa Hudgens goes full boho in a 70s inspired sheer and metallic Haney dress and a fantastic looking America Ferrera in red lace floral and strappy shoes at the EW and People Upfront event.

What is probably going to end up as the musical event of the year took place over the weekend and this week’s Instagram round-up kicks off with this seminal moment. And what dinner looks like after winning an Oscar. The Converse change makes Brie a girl after my own heart (I have a mystery huge bruise on my ankle which I’m putting down to wearing heels for the first time in 6 months).

In other pre-Oscars prep Sophie Turner opts for this simple tea with lemon and her invite shot.

Jacob Tremblay continues his adorable reign with these past and present shots with Sofia Vergara and super charming caption to boot. At the Oscars and after parties he got to hang out with several more Star Wars stars. Also adorable.

Chrissy Teigen was one of our Oscar best dressed and here is another view of her dress as she gets sewn into thing (and once again the bathroom question springs to mind).

A really good ad for Neutrogena as both Kerry Washington and Jennifer Garner look amazing (and are both on our best dressed list). Excellent on brand synergy here.

Just like us Oscars edition.

Feeling groovy cuz Rogelio's got my back

Moving on from the Oscars and Yael Grobglas is serving up excellent OOTD in a 70s inspired look. Plus yes it always does help having Rogelio behind you.

A behind the scenes look at Gina Rodriguez hanging high up in the air filming one of this week’s fantasy sequences on Jane the Virgin.

A stunning photo from the recent Entertainment Weekly of Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o celebrating Eclipsed’s move to Broadway.

A blood covered Walking Dead cast looking a whole lot happier in this video than we are used to seeing them. It’s nice to see so many smiles.

Why it can be bad to nap on the job.

We’ve had Oscars getting dressed behind the scenes and now for a costuming one with Chloe Bennet getting help with her zip on Agents of SHIELD.

Max Greenfield’s hair is as high as it is wonderful. It might help that fellow passenger Bia Iftikhar is an award winning hair stylist.

A super busy time for Saoirse Ronan with award season and Crucible rehearsals with previews starting Monday. So the day after the Oscars. That really is no break for Ronan. Tavi Gevinson captures the group recording and after reading Stacy Schiff’s The Witches last month I really want to check back in with The Crucible as I haven’t read it since high school.
