Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 Apr

After last week’s pink suit extravaganza, Look of the Week and spring fashion is a bit more eclectic. Lots of bold patterns, some fabulous ladysuits and sequin delights. Behold! Regular (or even not so regular) readers will not be surprised to see me kick off this week with Busy and Michelle. At the I Feel Pretty premiere, Busy looks incredible in sparkly Christian Siriano. Siriano, as Busy shared on her Stories also provided the dress for her sister.

Meanwhile, I wish Michelle’s Louis Vuitton was a jumpsuit rather than a witchy dress. The collar is reminiscent of this LV dress she wore at the SAG awards last year, but I like this detail more on this occasion even if the sequin SAG frock is better.

Also while I’m on the subject of I Feel Pretty, this by Alison Herman is an interesting look at Amy Schumer’s career trajectory.
I am never not going to love a sequin mini dress, especially when Natalie Morales is the one in it. I just finished season two of Santa Clarita Diet, this show and Morales are so much fun. I liked season one, but it has really found its weirdo voice. I hope there is more to come.Evan Rachel Wood is Queen of the Ladysuits; she does not disappoint in this very beige, very ’70s looking Altuzzara ensemble. Also opting for a vibe from my fave style decade is Thandie Newton in patterned and peplum Osman.

Really looking forward to see these ladies tear show shit up on season two of Westworld.Hello, handsome. James Marsden is coordinating with the carpet and showing how to pattern clash in style.Carrying on the crush theme with Jimmi Simspon; I adore him and those clear frames. This is also a fun and different suit choice for spring.I finally saw A Quiet Place and I am thankful for Krasinski’s beard/knitwear in this movie, as it gave me something to focus on instead of the intense dread levels. What a movie. Emily Blunt delivered reactions to destroy me on every level and it is nice seeing them having a lovely time on the red carpet.

This is at Variety’s Power of Women‘ event, where Blunt was being honored. Blunt wears floral Prada, which has a surprising touch of sequins on the shoulders. Also getting honored was Viola Davis, wearing her fave shade of pink (it looks great on her) in Pamella Roland; more peplum and it would appear that 2012 is making a comeback. I’m not sure how I feel like this on the whole, but Davis looks fabulous. Sandra Oh gives great casual outfit heading into Jimmy Kimmel Live! I am a little obsessed with sweats like this at the moment. In fact I would wear this entire outfit. And now for what Sandra Oh wore on the show. This is a great jumpsuit; Oh looks chic as hell (sorry, Reynolds Woodcock). This also reminds me that I still need to watch Killing Eve.

Get yourself someone who can do both casual and fancy. It was the Scandal series finale last night (things were handled, great clothes were worn), but earlier this week Kerry Washington attended Eva Longoria’s Star ceremony in a killer outfit.

Houndstooth appeared from time to time in Olivia Pope’s wardrobe, but she would not have worn something as colorful as this Oscar de la Renta frock. Sunglasses give it a daytime glam feel and I am head over heels for this look.

Best of the 2018 Oscars Red Carpet: Bold Color and Pattern

5 Mar

After months of awards shows, the big one is here! And while the show itself was a bit of a snooze overall, the red carpet delivered on the bold color front. After the mostly black Golden Globe ensembles, the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements were present in the form of pins and speeches.

Culminating in Frances McDormand’s incredible speech.

If you want to know more about what an “inclusion rider” is, Caroline Framke has this covered here.

For all things Oscars fashion highlights there will be a couple of posts going up today. No, it isn’t sexist to ask what designer an attendee is wearing.I pretty much screamed with joy when I saw photos of Jennifer Garner when she arrived. This is some Sydney Bristow era level of amazing in Atelier Versace.Bubblegum pink is a look for the Oscars and holy shit does Viola Davis score with Michael Kors Collection in this shade. And she somehow manages to not look saccharine.
My favorite all-time Oscar look is Michelle Williams in mustard yellow Vera Wang. It is not surprising to discover that Greta Gerwig in custom floral Rodarte in this particular shade is an instant win. I love everything about this, right down to her lipstick color. This is the dress of a winner; Allison Janney is serving up so much sleeve drama in Reem Acra. How to wear a bow and make it look like art; the Nicole Kidman in Armani Privé story. One of the highlights of the evening was the Tiffany Haddish/Maya Rudolph presenting pair. PT Anderson you better make a movie with these amazing women. Haddish wore the Alexander McQueen frock she bought for the Girls Trip premiere, which she also wore when she hosted SNL. The Ugg slippers are a nice touch.

Maya Rudolph’s crimson Valentino frock looks particularly great in motion as she walks on the stage. And on the red carpet Tiffany Haddish looks like royalty in a traditional Eritrean Zuria princess gown, as s tribute to her late father.Sadly neither Daniel Kaluuya nor Timothée Chalamet won Best Actor, but they did seem to be having a good time on the red carpet. Kaluuya mixed things up in brown Brunello Cucinelli and Timothée Chalamet went the nearly all-white approach in Berluti. Armie Hammer couldn’t make the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday because he was sick. Thanks to modern medicine he got into this velvet Armani suit and also managed to fire a hot dog cannon. Elizabeth Chambers also wears Armani in another fabulous asymmetric gown on the night.I finally started watching One Day at a Time, you guys were right, it is amazing. And Rita Moreno took things to new fashion heights last night by wearing the same dress she wore when she won an Oscar for West Side Story in 1962.The King of Wakanda isn’t going to wear just a regular tux to the Oscars. Chadwick Boseman has shown exactly how to do menswear during the Black Panther promo tour and beyond. On Saturday it was polka dot Burberry, at the Oscars it was Givenchy. Kelly Marie Tran showed the not so glamorous side of Oscar fashion on Instagram. I love her. And she looks fantastic in plunging Jenny Packham.  Betty Gabriel has been a style star this award season and she went big at the Oscars in a dress that is part ethereal, part sheer sexiness in Tony Ward.Winner of Best Original Screenplay Jordan Peele wore fire engine red to the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, but went with something more traditional at the Oscars in Calvin Klein. And Chelsea Peretti shows velvet isn’t just for tuxedo jackets. I have a new Elio shirt I want to add to my collection. James Ivory wears Elio on his chest and won Best Adapted Screenplay for Call Me by Your Name. Edited to add details of where you too can acquire an Elio shirt.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

26 Jan

Coats, boots and sweaters are all on the “Look of the Week” menu and Sundance taking place during award season is my fave kind of style whiplash. It is also a sartorial highlight for me because I cannot resist that slouchy (but often super cool) winter fashion. For all things fancy and fun gowns check out our SAG Awards coverage.

Plus Paris Couture Week, public appearances to promote things and some more amazing magazine covers. January, you keep on treating us (and keeping me very busy).Obsessed with Tessa Thompson’s Belstaff skirt and jacket, Cos turtleneck and silver Alchimia di Ballin silver ankle boots. Sorry to Bother You co-stars Lakeith Stanfield and Armie Hammer are also crushing their respective Sundance looks.

A post shared by Armie Hammer (@armiehammer) on

Armie has had a very busy week. Sadly there was no Oscar nomination (though I am more bummed out for Michael Stuhlbarg), but he has been promoting Call Me By Your Name in Italy in Paris with co-star Timothée Chalamet and director Luca Guadagnino. Lots of great Instagram Stories content. Traveling in double Adidas style.

And there is also this delightful interview on French talk show Quotidien. Bringing many screencap delights to my Twitter TL this morning. There’s no English subs on the second part (so far), but it is worth watching even if you can’t understand everything. Zineb Bayad recreated scenes from CMBYN with photos and she is in the audience, ending up in a Hammer/Chalamet sandwich hug. Back to the fabulous coats and boots of Sundance with Steven Yeun, also starring in Sorry to Bother You. I am very excited to see his post-Walking Dead career. A stunning Gabriela Hearst leopard print coat on Elizabeth Gillies; I wouldn’t expect anything less from someone that has been wearing all manner of extravagant costuming on Dynasty over the last few months. Sensible boots and fabulous coats are not mutually exclusive. Got to love a fancy hat too. Gillies’ Arizona co-star Rosemarie DeWitt also got the leopard print memo, much to my delight. I too have indulged in this pattern this week, hopefully the cardigan I have ordered from Topshop arrives tomorrow while I was writing this I got a text to say it has arrived. A day early! Check my Instagram for pictures when it does.Super excited for the 2 Dope Queens HBO specials and the promotion of this has also got me hyped. Great ’70s inspired looks from Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams. Issa Rae gives good Sundance sweater. At the A Boy, A Girl, A Dream premiere, Insecure’s Jay Ellis looks just as stylish as Lawrence. Looks like camo print is making a bit of a comeback. As also seen on Priyanka Chopra at the Burden the Park premiere. A fun mix of smart/casual that makes me glad that I am a hat and red lipstick person.

For something slightly more glam; Maggie Gyllenhaal in one of my brand faves with another Vampire’s Wife dress that I want in my closet. And a dash of ladysuit fabulousness from Aubrey Plaza in pink Rebecca Minkoff at “An Evening with Beverly Luff Lin.” A #TimesUp red beanie to promote the movement and because keeping your head warm is important (my mother drilled this into me, which might also be why I am a hat person).  Double Aubrey Plaza because I like this dress and Michael Shannon has paid attention to my mother, it would seem. From Utah to Paris; at the Berluti Menswear F/W 2018 show Isabelle Huppert continues to exude everything cool and Timothée Chalmet dips his toe back in the velvet suit well. While promoting Waco, Taylor Kitsch bundles up in a leather jacket and scarf combo refueling the crush that has never really gone away.Sequins are everywhere at the moment and I am very much on board with this trend. At Jimmy Kimmel Live! Viola Davis leans into this with a pair of gold sequined pants; everything about this look is fantastic.

On the show Davis also discussed the Scandal/HTGAWM crossover. Those sequined pants also look great on screen.Black Panther is less than a month away, which means we’re going to be seeing a lot more of this cast. I am excited about all of this. Lupita scores another stunner of a cover and the accompanying Hollywood Reporter shoot is just as beautiful.

In the interview she talks about the piece she wrote for The New York Times about her own horrifying experience with Harvey Weinstein:

“I felt uncomfortable in my silence, and I wanted to liberate myself from it and contribute to the discussion. That was just what I felt I needed to do, quite viscerally. I couldn’t sleep. I needed to get it out.”

Earlier this week I spoke to costume design icon Ruth E. Carter about the Black Panther costumes and I cannot wait to share what we talked about. Look out for that nearer the release of the film.  A VERY good week for magazine covers. This is also sparkly gown perfection.

The 2018 Golden Globes Red Carpet Part III

8 Jan

Now to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s third and final rundown of the red carpet. I share my thoughts on the black dress code show of solidarity here and for a menswear twist on women’s awards fashion check out this post.Viola Davis is always a red carpet fave and this occasion is no different. For Vulture, Angelica Jade Bastién wrote about the Best Moments in Black Excellence at the Golden Globes and one such moment is Viola Davis’ afro. Everyone wearing black doesn’t mean twinning all over the place. Instead it lets style personality shine; hair and accessories have power too.

And Davis’ velvet Brandon Maxwell frock is every flame emoji. Such a strong look. Tracee Ellis Ross also knows how to make a statement through what she wears; the hair wrap, Marc Jacobs halter dress, bold red lip and pearl earrings do just this. No I still haven’t seen Lady Bird (much to my dismay), but I did get emotional when both the film and Saoirse Ronan won. Metallic accents are one way to dazzle, so are dramatic shoulders as Ronan proves in Atelier Versace. Greta Gerwig keeps things simple in Oscar de la Renta, jazzing it up with a gold Tiffany necklace.

I love how breathlessly happy this speech is.
Speaking of gold, Kelly Clarkson looks like she has a fabulous bionic arm in custom Christina Siriano. From a gold sleeve to a silver one. Mary J. Blige sparkles in custom Alberta Ferretti gown.Warming my soul is this Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain reunion. We are deep in the sequin and metallic section so at some point I’m gonna run out of ways to say sparkly. Spencer is in glitzy Tadashi Shoji, Chastain wears diamante-embellished Armani Prive. Sarah Paulson loves a sequin. This is no different when the dress code is black and she looks great in Calvin Klein by Appointment. Giving strong Jolie leg is Issa Rae, in smoking hot caped Atelier Prabal Gurung. The emerald necklace is the perfect finishing touch. From the front, Dakota Johnson’s Gucci gown is simple elegance. From the back it reveals a different metallic story. New Gucci continues to deliver. The best Diane Kruger dress in an age and one that makes me think of Daenerys’ season seven look. This isn’t Targaryen, but Prada.Embellished collars are my weakness, Elisabeth Moss in custom Dior is right in my wheelhouse.

Moss quoted directly from Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale words and I’m feeling emotional just typing this (lack of sleep might be a contributing factor).Isabelle Huppert looks like she is wearing armor, sequin Chloe armor. And yep she looks cool as fuck, as per.

Gwendoline Christie often sports armor, but there is nothing metallic her. A ruffled Giles number is just as bold.Cersei would never, but Lena Headey’s gone for subtle romance in Elie Saab and I love this change up. Looking elegant as always, Ava DuVernay in Armani Prive. Also adding glitzy glamour to proceedings. Gillian Anderson icy blonde locks gives her a ’40s movie star vibe, the super caped sleeve Solace London adds a contemporary touch. I bow down to her, always.

I have a feeling Gillian enjoyed Natalie Portman’s Best Director intro. If Caitriona Balfe ever gets stuck in the ’20s she should make sure this flapper-adjacent Chanel Couture number is in her suitcase. Nothing but respect for my presidents.

And their speeches.

All of their speeches.

Best of 2017 – Out of the Box: Look of the Week (Part 2)

29 Dec

Welcome to the Best of 2017! Today we are celebrating the outfits that lit up “Out of the Box” on a weekly basis.

The one consistent column here at TV Ate My Wardrobe is “Out of the Box,” a weekly round-up of the outfits that make my jaw drop, inspire or just look really fucking cool. We have already celebrated magazine covers—which can be found here—so now it is time for other public appearances, with a few magazine editorials thrown in.

The only rule is that the outfits in question had to appear as part of an “Out of the Box” column, so a lot of awards, TCA and other major moments are missing as they had their own articles dedicated to them. But it was hard enough to narrow down a reasonable list so this post didn’t sprawl for days. In order of what month they appeared, here are my fave Look of Week entries.  Best Leopard Print

Every award season there are a handful of actors who light up the red carpet/talk shows/magazines at every single turn. One such person during the last awards cycle was Ruth Negga. Negga kicks off the rundown in a MOVIE STAR outfit that looks straight out of Carol, causing so many dreamy sighs. Leopard print and olive green leather never looked better. Best Stripes

Sundance always delivers on the knit front (and you can see more excellent winter lewks here). Armie Hammer is working two of my favorite things—no not an arm sling—stripes and sweaters. This also shows how long the promotional/awards life of a movie can be as Call Me By Your Name was a big hit at this festival in January and it has now only just been released wide across the U.S. I know I am not unique when I say it is my fave film of 2017. Best Oscar Outfit Change

As I mention above, the outfits that appear here all featured on “Out of the Box” so no Oscar dresses. But the Vanity Fair party is fair game. Viola Davis crushed it with her red Armani gown and then again in a white Brandon Maxwell ladysuit paired with Stella McCartney platforms. The Oscar statue makes a great accessory, but my eyes are on Davis. Best Casual Talk Show Arrival

The talk show exit/arrival will often feature the outfit that will be worn on the show as this acts as a great low-key runway. But not always (see also Tatiana Maslany) and here Yara Shahidi goes casual cool giving me so many strong mustard cardigan feelings. Shahidi has been a repeat “Out of the Box” fixture in 2017 and I imagine this will be the case next year too. Best Introduction

Back in April, Kelly Marie Tran was introduced as a new Star Wars cast member and she did so in style. This ruffled shirt dress is the kind of spin on a classic outfit that I am here for (none of this deconstructed shirt business). Plus those sparkly shoes add a touch of fun glitz to proceedings. Tran continued to thrill on the red carpet, particularly very recently.Best Fancy Sequins

At the MTV Movie and now TV Awards nothing made me happier than this photo of Taraji P. Henson and Tracee Ellis Ross in a prom pose covered in sequins.Best Airport Style

When flying in for the Cannes Film Festival expect cameras at the airport. Kirsten Dunst has picked the perfect outfit leaning into ’70s casual, even if high-waisted jeans don’t make the most comfortable sitting.

Bonus Jesse Plemons kicks off this mini Best IRL Couples of TV Ate My Wardrobe section. Best Polo

Every year the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic delivers on the crisp collars, sunglasses and general chic summer attire. 2017 was no different with Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys switching out ’80s spy garb for stripes, ruffles and straw hats. Best Fancy Tiling Adjacent Patterns

The Big Sick is another film that makes my Top 10 from this year. At the premiere in June, Emily V. Gordon looked stunning in a dress that also doubles as a pattern for fancy tiling in the bathroom of my dream house. Great lipstick choice too. Kumail Nanjiani also scrubs up well. Best Putting A Bird On It

Also in the same week in June, Zendaya at one of the many Spider-Man events, continued to show what a strong sartorial presence she is in this Delpozo ensemble. Best Colorful Strips

At the BET Awards, Issa Rae went bold in a rainbow Balmain blazer and formal shorts. Insecure costume designer Ayanna James also doubles Rae’s stylist and she gives her great outfits both on and off screen. Best Ladysuit (Part 1)

The Cut has done some of my favorite profiles of the year including this one with Insecure’s Yvonne Orji. The fact that she is wearing this fabulous ladysuit is an editorial bonus.
Best Ladysuit (Part 2)

Ditching the jacket and striking a pose for Interview that makes me want to frame this photo of Tatiana Maslany. Giving me Cosima in a tux vibes while also wearing some serious eyeliner flicks, which even the best YouTube tutorial, would still be impossible for me to recreate. Best Matching

At the Ingrid Goes West premiere, Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen both wear almost matching Marc Jacobs in a spin on the plot of the movie they are promoting. A cute twist I am definitely on board. I loved Ingrid Goes West and other than some third act issues; it is the best look at Insta culture on film so far.Best Jester

Harry Styles upped his style (sorry) game in 2017 leaning into some fun and decadent suits, often Gucci (such as the one above). One of the best deep dives into Styles’ style (sorry) story comes from Twitter pal Fiona and her ongoing thread noting the similarities between Styles and Cate Blanchett’s red carpet looks.Best Casual Sequins

More Gucci treats with Lupita Nyong’o showing she is just as strong at casual red carpet style as she is with the fancy pants events.Best Botanics

There has been a lot of florals on the red carpet this year. My favorite came late in the year from Zoe Kazan. It is a complete coincidence that there are three very different Gucci looks in a row, but it also shows just how strong (and leaning to my twee adjacent taste) this brand has been in 2017.Best Striking a Pose

Ending out of calendar sequence because this is the perfect shot to celebrate the style highs of 2017. Embracing the fanfare and decadence of Cannes are Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst. All wearing dresses that look just as fabulous from behind as they do from the front.

Here’s to more sartorial wonders in 2018!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 Nov

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving—yeah I know it was yesterday—to all celebrating! Even with the four-day weekend, there are still plenty of red carpet moments and award season antics. The AMAs delivered some sartorial highs, the Independent Spirit Award nominations have been announced, Call Me By Your Name is out today and there’s a reunion that makes my heart swell.

I realized last week that “Out of the Box” has turned into something a little more than just the best looks; it has become a weekly newsletter of sorts with a mix of outfits and other things that excite me including trailers and performances. The level of activity on TV Ate My Wardrobe is less than it used to be (because I am writing for other outlets) and this is all very much a work in progress (as is life), but I am thankful I have this outlet to share these weekly observations. Viola Davis is a vision in white caped-sleeve crystal-embroidered Michael Kors Collection at the AMAs and she never disappoints on the red carpet. As the host of the AMAs, Tracee Ellis Ross had numerous outfit changes throughout the night and she made a dramatic impact on her arrival in a stunning custom Stella McCartney sequin gown.

Regular readers will know how much I love Tracee Ellis Ross’ Instagram feed and it showcases the many looks she wore while hosting. I’ve gone for another sparkly number and this video really captures this aspect of the Paco Rabanne matching skirt and top. Another highlight is this tribute to both her mother and Michael Jackson.Clueless reboot, but now Cher is a spy and played by Yara Shahidi. Sign me up. Going against the jewel tone palette she wears as Veronica Lodge on Riverdale is Camila Mendes in a romantic J. Mendel gown.

And for all things Riverdale season 2 style check out my Observer column here
I’ve been listening to Kelly Clarkson’s new album “Meaning of Life” nonstop and holy hell is this Christian Siriano feathered gown serving up super diva feelings.

I love her. They’re not actually sisters, but Claire Foy and Vanessa Kirby very much look like siblings as they both opt for seasonal sparkles of varying lengths—Christian Dior for Foy, Prada for Kirby—at the premiere of The Crown. Foy’s Lisbeth Salander hair looks great and I am super excited for the second season of this show.  The full Ava DuVernay/Ryan Coogler panel transcript is going to be made available soon, but for now enjoy this snippet and DuVernay’s patterned frock.

And the new Wrinkle in Time trailer. Also at VultureFest is Sofia Coppola in an outfit that looks straight from my closet. So of course I am here for it.Jennifer Garner’s giving great slip dress at a screening of her new film The Tribes of Palos Verdes and this week I watched the episode of Felicity where she first makes an appearance.

And as a big Alias fan, I would love to see her reunite with J.J. Abrams in a professional capacity. Maybe Star Wars, maybe something else. Or just get Garner a great TV project. At the Film Independent 2018 Spirit Awards press conference, Tessa Thompson goes for pattern clashing Jason Wu and some amazing orange pumps. This is one of my favorite award shows of the season and I am so happy that Nick Kroll and John Mulaney will be back again to host. It is also one of the best red carpets of the entire calendar and Thompson’s look here is very much in line with the kind of thing you can expect from the main event.

For the full list of nominees head here. One movie that has got multiple Spirit Award nominations is the incredible Call Me By Your Name (released today in the US) and the press tour for this movie has included a number appearance delights. It is a movie I watched twice at the cinema within the space of one week and it is probably my favorite film of the year. I finished the book at the weekend and the soundtrack has been playing in-between those Kelly Clarkson listens.

Timothée Chalamet is having quite the year and he gets a great plaid suit modeling shot in GQ. Hopefully we will see more of this kind of suit wearing throughout award season.

I fell down a GoldDerby video hole the other day, but I still don’t know where Chalamet got this eagle sweater number from. It is information I would like to have.Armie Hammer covers The Hollywood Reporter this week and he is staring deep into your soul.  In the interview he talks about the hypocrisy of Hollywood and the Oscars with how Casey Affleck was lauded while Nate Parker was shutout. There’s also a discussion about his interesting career trajectory and the joyous experience of making Call Me By Your Name. And Hammer in chunky knits. Always appreciated.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 Nov

The trickle of film celebrations has turned into a stream and this is a bumper Look of the Week. Fabulous frocks, ladysuits and stunning December issues celebrating the good things about this year. Yes, there are some good things among the garbage.  At the 21st annual Hollywood Awards, Zoe Kazan’s Gucci botanical frock is a delight. I can see Kazan in a lot of the new Gucci pieces and this is right in my style wheelhouse. Also to file under outfits that I adore; the ladysuit! Noomi Rapace mixes a lace cami with menswear inspiration and not only picks a great color suit, but doubles down with her pumps. And for an entirely different take on the ladysuit. Kate Mara’s metallic Burberry number is giving futuristic retro vibes.I can’t see a slip dress and not think about the ’90s. Throw a white baby doll tee under it/cardigan over it with Cons for that season 1 Felicity vibe and then heat things up without one a la Felicity in the season 2 premiere.

Tatiana Maslany has opted for the latter at the Hollywood Film Awards in Diane von Furstenberg. Throwing all the flame emojis in Viola Davis’ direction because this iridescent Alberta Ferretti gown is smoking hot.Emily V. Gordon continues to impress with her range of floral frocks and this Saloni London number is another hit. As are her shoes. And as a fan of a suit outside of the usual black/grey/brown/navy spectrum, I am very much here for Kumail Nanjiani’s choice here.

Hopefully we will continue to see the Big Sick team getting fêted and it is one of my favorite films of 2017. Wearing vintage Balmain to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Patron of the Artists Awards is Tracee Ellis Ross and once again her love of fashion goes deep and far back. Love the pop of red on her bag and pumps.
The LACMA Art + Film Gala was presented by Gucci so it is ruffles and lace for Kerry Washington, in a distinctive look. I continue to be enamored with everything Gucci is doing right now.

Also a good time to mention that I spoke to Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo last week and you can read that here.

Karen O spits rainbows and this Yeah Yeah Yeahs reunion is giving me all those undergraduate feelings. *digs out “Pin” poster*Drawing hearts around this photo of Greta Gerwig and Saoirse Ronan at a screening of Lady Bird and Ronan is driving my desire to get some velvet pants.

I mentioned on Twitter that when I saw this photo of Allison Janney, my jaw hit the floor. Two days later and it is still having the same effect. Everything I love about a women in a tuxedo is on display here. The Cut continues their run of excellent profiles of women I find very interesting and this Aidy Bryant one is now different. The shoot itself is also fabulous and just because Bryant is not a sample size; it doesn’t mean she shouldn’t look as high fashion as anyone else who appears in these editorials. Something she discusses in the interview and she recalls having to wear her own clothes when she did a shoot with her SNL co-stars:

“It was just humiliating. The other girls had racks of clothes to choose from and were wearing these thousand-dollar dresses, and I had two sacks or like one matronly mother-of-the-bride dress. Those were the first times where I was like, Something is different here and this isn’t fair. This is a fucked-up situation, and it’s purely because of my body. Not because I’m less funny — it’s my body. It’s the only reason that I’m treated differently right now. And it lit a fucking fire in me.”

The original reason behind starting this blog was to discuss costume influence on my own style and Bryant’s costuming in The Big Sick ticks all those boxes. Fuck having to compromise on what you wear just because you’re not a size 6. Teen Vogue will cease to have a print copy next year and while it is the digital platform that has made this magazine one to watch for, I am still sad to see this one depart the print landscape. Over the years there have been some stunning covers (this Amandla Stenberg made a huge impact on me) and this Hillary Clinton cover (HRC is also the guest-editor of this issue) is pure art.
Another case of my jaw hitting the floor this week and Edward Enniful’s first edition of UK Vogue as the new editor-in-chief, is making a huge impression with this stunning shot of Adwoa Aboah. I can’t stop staring and I cannot wait until I get my hands on a copy.

There is a scene in Call My By Your Name that takes place in front of a bunch of magazines and I ended up in a Google image hole of Vogue Italia covers from 1983 and it reminds me of that period. The Samira Wiley Out 100 cover from three years ago is still one I think about. Such a stunning image and again this annual issue delivers. Jonathan Groff has had another really strong year and he gives great casual sweater pose. Also having an incredible year is Emmy award winning Lena Waithe. This cover is fabulous and I love how confident her gaze is here.

Best of the Emmys 2017 Style: Bold Color and Shimmer

18 Sep

Welcome to the second part of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Emmy coverage and this is brought to you on four hours sleep and a whole lot of Diet Coke (#notspon).

For all things awards, couples, feathers and more head here. In this post we will be lavishing praise on the colorful and metallic looks of the night. AKA my favorite kind of award show sartorial choices.Pleats make for the best all drama posing and Tessa Thompson in rainbow Rosie Assoulin is quite possibly the best look of the entire night. There’s a bonus ’70s feeling about all of this and I am so ready for the Thor press tour.Viola Davis always gives great vibrant color—it was pink in 2016—and this year’s Emmys are no different. A tangerine dream in custom Zac Posen. One of the show highlights was Tituss Burgess in the Westworld sketch and also this jacket is beyond fantastic.Again the Stranger Things teens continue to show most the adult dudes how it is done; wearing designers from Prada to Ted Baker and Balmain. Getting the edge in the best dressed here is Caleb McLaughlin in a purple brocade Garçon Couture jacket. Nicole Kidman won big on the night in more ways than one as she picked up for Best Actress in a mini-series and as producer on Big Little Lies. She was also wearing maybe her best look of a very busy 2017 in red Calvin Klein by Appointment. Also favoring crimson is Issa Rae in custom Vera Wang; I’m not wild about the sleeves but from the back this dress is divine. If you are a regular watched of Gina Rodriguez’s Instagram Stories then you have probably seen her use a pull up bar on her door frame. It took her a few attempts, but she can now work it like a pro and she even did so in this super sexy Naeem Khan frock. And along with Busy Philipps, she very much makes me want to exercise more.Yara Shahidi once again does something different and you can never predict what red carpet direction she will opt for. This time she goes ethereal in Prada.Last year Sarah Paulson wowed in green sequined Prada and she’s gone the sparkly route again in Carolina Herrera. It doesn’t quite deliver the same knockout levels, but I do love the drama of the puffed out sleeves. For my fave silver sequins of the night look no further than Anna Chlumsky in custom Sachin & Babi.

Chlumsky also gave the best reaction to the worst moment and her very ’90s styling on Halt and Catch Fire is every level flashback inducing.Mixing florals and metallics is Queen Regina King in a plunging Galia Lahav Couture gown and those DVANI diamond starburst earrings are making me wish I had pierced ears.Another flaming hot Naeem Khan dress and Laverne Cox is a dripped in silver delight.Kiernan Shipka has been coming to the Emmys since 2010 and this is an instant way to feel old—as pointed out with this helpful visual from Jarett Wieselmen. This Miu Miu gown is simple, elegant and very pretty.Another teen hitting all the right sartorial notes is Millie Bobby Brown in Calvin Klein by Appointment. This gives off a princess vibe without feeling too saccharine.Millennial pink for Samira Wiley in custom Christian Siriano and I love the cut of this gown.Another very different ladysuit from Evan Rachel Wood in striking wide-legged Jeremy Scott for Moschino. She looks like a fabulous ringmaster.

Best of the Pre 2017 Emmy Awards Parties

17 Sep

Happy Emmy Awards Day! Tonight is the big event, but first there are a lot of pre parties with FX, BAFTA and Variety among those celebrating the nominees.

This has been a very busy couple of weeks for red carpet style and come back tomorrow morning when we will be showcasing the best looks from the Emmy red carpet. The biggest trends so far are bold prints, pants and shimmer.More ruffled J. Mendel delights and Keri Russell’s red frock is giving off some ’70s vibes, which I am of course here for. Matthew Rhys mixes casual in jeans and white sneakers with a blazer and while I don’t think it is going to happen, I would love to see them both win tonight. But if Rhys is going to get beaten by anyone, then I hope it is Sterling K. Brown. And here is Brown with wife Ryan Michelle Bathe looking all kinds of couple goals. Hoping for some A+ Insta material from this pair tonight.IRL bestie of Sterling K. Brown and Atlanta star Bryan Tyree Henry delivers sartorially with some fabulous snake slippers and palm tree print shirt.Lakeith Stanfield in a leather shirt is amazing, but also I would very much like those shoes for myself. FX really is home to some of the most stylish casts, as this party proves.
Dreamy swoony sighs because Stanley Tucci is wearing a three-piece suit. Switching out her very Carrie Bradshaw Delpozo for this dream of print Valentino dress and this might be the most Mad Men thing I’ve seen Kiernan Shipka in—aside from her Sally Draper costumes. Alison Pill goes classic in black and red in a less ’50s version of this Elisabeth Moss ensemble.Holy pattern, Martha! I am in love with everything about this Alison Wright ladysuit take.Tween and teen boys continue to outshine the grown-ups and Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp in custom Laboratoire is doing just that. Florals and velvet is always going to be a winner. Queen Judith Light crushing it in pants and matching blouse in an outfit that wouldn’t look out of place in the recent (and underrated) Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie.And at the Variety party, Judith Light looks fucking fabulous in a gold ladysuit. Bowing down, forever.More metallic wonders and Viola Davis in sequin and floral Alice + Olivia with a black top is pre-party chic at its best. Tracee Ellis Ross in leopard print and that lipstick is enough to make me ignore the random tassels at the bottom of this Michael Kors Collection dress.

I love her.

Also, every flame and heart eye emoji ever. This is a great print dress and the only thing I would change about Abbi Jacobson’s look is the boots. Not that there is anything wrong with boots and a dress—it is my go to—but I’d opt for something a little more ankle/less calf length and possibly a darker color. Or my fave green ones.Claire Foy is looking very un-Queen Elizabeth as she turns her attention to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; lipstick and hair are a darker shade and this Gucci is goth whimsy. I always do a double take with Vanessa Kirby because she looks nothing like Margaret IRL—even though I saw her looking a lot like this in The Hour long before The Crown. Going for the opposite approach to her screen sister and the length combined with the bell sleeves gives a strong ’60s vibe.
More from The Crown cast looking very different to how they do on the show and also a whole lot of feelings because I’m still not over Jared Harris’ devastating performance. Also that flash of pink is delightful and this looks like a fun cast to party with. Someone make this rom-com.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

28 Apr

After last week’s color and pattern extravaganza things are slightly more dialed back in this edition of “Out of the Box,” but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Plus there are still plenty of prints on display across various events this week and the Tribeca Film Festival is delivering on a number of sartorial levels.

Between award season faves and new shows getting the promotion treatment there’s a lot to celebrate this week. We also have 2/4 of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants cast, which seemed like something worth pointing out. Viola Davis shut everything down for the second week in a row and on the back of her incredible Time cover she wore this stunning purple Armani gown to the event celebrating this issue/list. Award season has not been over for long, but it is safe to say we’ve been missing the weekly dose of Ruth Negga in these parts. Luckily for us she took a break from filming the second season of Preacher (which I’m really looking forward to) and stopped by the Tiffany & Co 2017 Blue Collection Gala in New York wearing this fabulous Gucci ensemble.

This is ticking so many boxes including a strong collar and all things leopard print. Now entering the Tribeca Film Festival portion of the week and regular readers will know how much I love it when co-stars come out to support each others projects. The Mr. Robot crew seems pretty tight and Rami Malek was joined by his onscreen sister and sorta-BFF at the premiere of his film Buster’s Mal Heart.

They’re also doing a good job on the outfit coordination without being too matchy matchy with Carly Chaikin looking slightly more casual and I am coveting both her clutch and Portia Doubleday’s bag hard.Rami as ever is bringing it with his suit choice and what looks like a classic black take in the first shot is actually hiding the accents stripe down the sleeve; giving it that Rami edge. It is of course Dior Homme and Ilaria Urbinati is the stylist behind this great athleisure adjacent choice. How to do double polka dot by America Ferrera. While moderating a conversation with Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner as part of Tribeca Talks, America Ferrera delivers a great panel outfit and one with a fun 3D texture element. Great chunky silver platforms too. From fantastic shoes to ones I’m going to ignore as the rest of Rose Byrne’s Rag & Bone look is fabulous mixing feminine florals with leather. At the Flower premiere Zoey Deutch goes full Peter Pan collar in this super cute Chloé dress, which is everything I love about the ’70s influence that is still dominating.

I was just scrolling through the new arrivals at Chloé and I am maybe in love with these floral pants. Perhaps because this print is giving me flashbacks to a duvet cover my parents had. Another fun take on leopard print this week with Ruth Wilson in Alessandra Rich, which the belt helpfully points out and also nearly ruins this frock; can we do away with the very Calvin Klein ’90s actual labeling please. Thanks. Alexis Bledel doesn’t make a tonne of red carpet appearances, but when she does she hits all the right notes including this rainbow beaded halter Cushnie et Ochs frock at the premiere for The Handmaid’s Tale. Love, love, love the injection of even more color with the turquoise clutch and yellow sandals.

While I’m on the subject of promotion for the incredible adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale here is a striking cast shot with a guest appearance by author Margaret Atwood via Samira Wiley’s Instagram.
