Sofia Coppola’s new film The Bling Ring just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival which means it’s time for a new poster emblazoned with positive quotes and star ratings. It’s a blend of the promotional imagery that has been released so far; a shot of the group walking down the street (also the cover of the Nancy Jo Sales book – which I’ve just ordered) with a bold font on a bright yellow background. The shot of the group by themselves isn’t all that impressive but coupled with the text and color it stands out (though this teaser poster is still my favorite).
This is one of my most anticipated summer movies (along with The Way, Way, Back, Frances Ha and The Kings of Summer) partly thanks to the director and also because of the subject matter. I find the notion of celebrity and how some people strive for it beyond anything else to be fascinating. Coppola has a tendency to focus on youth culture and while she only really scratches the surface of this theme it is one she has explored through various time periods. It might not go too deep into the why of it all, but one thing you can count on with Coppola is that the film will look stunning (sadly the incredible cinematographer Harris Savides died during production but his vision still permeates). The soundtrack will be on repeat all summer and beyond – both Virgin Suicides soundtracks are still on constant rotation more than ten years after the film was released. And hey lets relive the fashion of five years ago; dig out your biggest sunglasses.
Also this new Bling Ring poster gives me an excuse to post this now infamous clip from Pretty Wild (via The Soup) and it’s quite possibly my favorite reality show moment.
