Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Apr

How is it April already? A question I gave been asking since Sunday. However, it is finally light jacket temperature and I am thrilled. My winter coats have served me well, but I am ready to wear something else.

On the red carpet and at events this week there is an injection of color with a dash of classic black frocks thrown into the mix (it still isn’t that warm tbh).

Confession – I struggled with the first few episodes of Legion and fell off after episode three. I think it looks incredible and the performances are great, I just felt very disconnected with it all. Maybe I will try again, but TV watching time is already very busy.

At the premiere TV Ate My Wardrobe fave Aubrey Plaza gives great red lip and velvet Vince Camuto. A striking and classic look. Meanwhile, Dan Stevens goes bold in both his suit and footwear choice. Reader, I am enjoying this. Now this is spring florals; Katie Aselton is a pattern clashing delight in Preen with a Clare Vivier bag, which I have fallen in love with. The eye detail is creepy AND charming.

There is a lot to love about Atlanta, but the episodes which have been the highlight for me in both season one and two are Van-centric. Zazie Beetz is incredible and I cannot wait to see her in Deadpool 2. This stripe/zig-zag dress combo is also fantastic.

And here she is on Late Night with Seth Meyers in that fabulous dress talking about her German upbringing (including some things that influenced a recent Atlanta episode).I am also very much looking forward to having the living crap scared out of me when I go to see The Quiet Place. This has been a fun press tour with IRL couple Emily Blunt and John Krasinski.

At the London premiere, Blunt goes super spring in floral tiered Elie Saab and while Krasinski could have maybe been a little less casual, I am a sucker for this look on a dude (especially one with a beard this good).

This is also a very strong look.Leighton Meester has turned an icy shade of blonde and to my great surprise, I am very much here for it. Less surprising is how much I am coveting her airport ensemble.Book-ending this week with black dresses, but adding some spring fever with the floral backdrop at the New York screening of Howard’s End. The costumes in this show are fantastic—so much gingham—and it is always a pleasure to have Hayley Atwell on TV (I miss you, Agent Carter). Atwell is joined by on screen sister Philippa Coulthard and there is definite coordination here; Atwell gets my dress vote, Coulthard wins the shoes.

Prints, Jumpsuits and Red Dancing Lady Dresses at Summer TCA

3 Aug

The Television Critics’ Association 2017 Summer press tour is currently in its second week and to stop “Out of the Box” from being super long, I’ve decided to do a separate post dedicated to the panel attire that has caught my attention.

One key thing when picking out an outfit for TCA is how it will look sitting down because that’s what you’re gonna be doing and most of the pictures will be from this angle. Occasionally there will be the entrance, arrival or party shots, but the only guarantee is that sitting down one.

Also you don’t want to be going too formal; think perfect daytime attire such as fancy office or even something that would be wedding guest appropriate. There aren’t strict rules for these kinds of events and there is plenty of scope for getting it right. As you will see from looks below.Outlander is back next month (!) with Jamie and Claire separated by time and at the panel they revealed when you can expect to see them reunited. Caitriona Balfe chose my favorite kind of look for TCA – see also here – in a fabulous print. This Marni frock looks great sitting down and a bold pattern is always a winner.Balfe’s onscreen Outlander daughter Sophie Skelton also went the print route and one issue with the whole sitting down panel wear is that it can be the ultimate tease; sometimes we only get a glimpse. But this is where Instagram comes in.

Because we get behind the scenes swishy shots like this one and it turns out what I thought was a blouse and skirt is actually this dress by Maje. Instagram really has made hunting down pieces of clothing/make-up that much easier.
Confession; I have never seen Everwood so the big reunion panel didn’t have the same emotional effect on me, but I do appreciate a cast that likes each other this much. And Emily VanCamp’s pajama-adjacent floral jacket paired with skinny jeans and heels gets two enthusiastic thumbs up from me.Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Vella Lovell gives great jumpsuit in this bold green number and yet I still haven’t acquired my first jumpsuit. Still a 2017 style goal.

I fell down a Crazy Ex-Girlfriend song hole on YouTube a couple of weeks ago and it was wonderful and after reading the panel highlights I am now even more excited for season 3. It feels like Sonequa Martin-Green is giving me that look because she knows I’m gonna moan about the color of her shoes, which I was going to. But also red Louboutin soles are great for sitting down shots because generally you will see that flash of color.

Also that floral dress is delightful and I would love to know what shade/brand of lipstick she is wearing.
Speaking of red soles and Hayley Atwell demonstrates my point perfectly at the Starz panel for the Howard’s End miniseries. A co-production with the BBC and this cast is fabulous; I will follow Atwell wherever she goes and Matthew Macfadyen and Tracey Ullman definitely make this an enticing project.

There is of course another very famous version of Howard’s End and while I’m not a huge Merchant Ivory fan it will be interesting to see if the mini-series can step out of shadow of the 1992 Oscar winning film. Girlfriend Experience co-creator Amy Seimetz shows how a bold color pump can brighten up any outfit and I’m very into the whole shirt buttoned all the way up thing at the moment. And of course ladysuits.First of all I think this shot is pretty funny in that it looks like Ioan Gruffudd and Joanne Froggatt are being proclaimed as liars.

This is of course the name of their new Sundance show and I also love that Froggatt’s red Johanna Ortiz frock is giving off serious dancing lady emoji vibes. Gruffudd scrubs up very well and his beard game is strong. Also I miss his show where he couldn’t die. That was fun.The women of Top of the Lake: China Girl did not coordinate as well Nicole Kidman’s other co-stars from The Beguiled and this covers the spectrum of panel attire with Elisabeth Moss leaning into pattern delights in Camilla and Marc, Gwendoline Christie wearing menswear inspired cool, Nicole Kidman doing her usual ruffled frock thing and Alice Englert leaning maybe a little too casual.

For more summer TCA style head here and come back tomorrow for another bumper “Out of the Box.”

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 May

A fun mix of casual and glam this week with Upfronts fashion (for more from the Fox and NBC panels head here) delivering some “Out of the Box” sartorial highs. Plus Cannes gives us red carpet decadence and a dash of chic French Rivera daytime photocall outfits. Oh and there is an extra special treat at the end.Hayley AtwellIt wasn’t a surprise considering the ratings and the fact that Hayley Atwell had already been cast on another ABC show (Conviction – watch the promo here), but the Agent Carter cancellation still hurts and I’m sad we’re not going to be getting any more Peggy adventures (for now).

I will be watching Conviction based on its star (and Francie from Alias is in it!) and Atwell is giving me even more positive feelings towards jumpsuits in this strapless number.Constance WuConstance Wu’s got the ideal blend of casual and cool in this dress which is giving me early 80s sports vibes (maybe because I wrote this dedication to athleisure wear this week) at the ABC Upfront event. Love the bold pink lip color with the mint green of the frock.Martha PlimptonMore lipstick treats from Martha Plimpton in an outfit which is ticking all the pocket and excellent office vibes boxes.Krysten RitterKrysten Ritter making another “Out of the Box” appearance switching out stunning crimson for studded and sparkly Zuhair Murad at the Webby Awards. Ritter is another red lip color queen. Kirsten DunstKirsten Dunst continues to crush it on all levels at Cannes and this aerial shot of her walking the Loving red carpet in a delicate (and okay maybe slightly bridal, but who cares) Dior Couture gown is pretty stunning. Dior it turns out is a much better brand for Dunst than JLaw if this festival is anything to go by. Also check out Dunst on the cover of the new Hollywood Reporter Emmy roundtable issue.Ruth NeggaA very busy time for Ruth Negga with Preacher about to premiere on AMC and a performance in Loving which has been getting rave reviews at Cannes. A gold long sleeve pleated Suno frock is maybe a little too fall for Cannes, but I think she looks fantastic. Excellent choice of footwear with bronze sandals that gives this ensemble a more summery feel.Personal ShopperKristen Stewart looks like she has been having a blast at Cannes this year and she’s been wearing a whole lot of Chanel (not a surprise) over the course of the festival. This daytime look at the Personal Shopper photocall is my favorite (you can read about/see the rest here) and this is ultimate Chanel cool. The sunglasses and her general vibe also helps. Co-stars Sigrid Bouaziz and Nora von Waldstatten are also slaying their daytime style and I particularly love Bouaziz’s ultra-mini patterned frock.Oscar IsaacEnding this week on an excellent (and dreamy) Rolling Stone cover note with Oscar Isaac smoldering it up a storm. Yes the release of this cover derailed work yesterday afternoon. The interview is great and this might be my favorite anecdote for obvious reasons “In high school, he began writing an invitation to Claire Danes, then the teen star of My So-Called Life, to appear in one of his productions, but he reconsidered.”

New Agent Carter S2 Photos – Peggy and Dottie’s Portraits

7 Jan

Agent Carter was originally scheduled to return this week for season 2 – the State of the Union caused the bump – and now the two-hour event will air January 19 instead. For now there are some new character portraits and TV Line has the exclusive selection featuring characters old and new. We’ve picked a couple of our favorite shots which showcase costuming, red lipstick and general DGAF attitude.

Agent CarterThis is very much the face of someone who knows their value and it will be interesting to see if Peggy gets more respect after the events of last season and with a coast change. Costuming wise it is similar to last season with red and white being signature colors with only blue missing from the palette. This is a more informal setting than the promo material last year which saw Peggy brandishing a gun and wearing a red Stetson Stratoliner. However, you can see Peggy standing defiant in an all blue dress with red trim in the season 2 key art; gun in hand, sans hat.

Hayley Atwell is well suited to this period of clothing (as Restless and Any Human Heart can attest  – watch both mini-series’ if you can) and I am very excited to see what costume designer Giovanna Melton has got in store for us this year.

Agent Carter - Dottie A stunning stone cold fox and I would not expect anything less from Bridget Regan as Dottie; another role in which Regan excels at playing super sweet and then turns out to be the big bad. It’s going to be fun watching the pair go up against each other now it is all out in the open and Dottie is just as formidable as her rival with the added advantage of being part of what appears to be the original Black Widow program. Basically, don’t mess with her.

Peggy looks directly at the camera in her character photograph engaging the viewer, whereas Dottie is devoid of any emotion and appears detached. The red of her lips, blouse, buttons and trim stop her from melting into a sea of black and it is an incredibly affecting shot. These women come from very different places and their methods vary – one is far more inclined to kill to get what they want than the other – and this is the one relationship/conflict I am most excited about seeing develop this season.

Best of TV Costuming 2015: Best of the Rest Part 1

22 Dec

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2015” costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking; we want to celebrate the work of television’s best costume designers.

So far the Best of 2015 series has focused on in-depth costuming achievements from The Americans, Hannibal, Fargo and Mad Men. Plus a special You’re the Worst “Music Monday” end credits rundown.

Now is the turn of a huge range of shows we have been watching this year from network, cable and streaming with comedy, drama and all those other hard to categorize scripted offerings. There has been so many fantastic individual moments that we have had to split this post into two otherwise the scrolling would be endless.

Here is Part 1 of the standout costuming moments in 2015.

Daenerys Dragon necklaceMost On Point Accessorizing

What better way to appease the dragon that has done a runner than wear a necklace bearing a very familiar image and this comes in particularly handy for Daenerys in “The Dance of Dragons” when Drogon makes a very timely entrance. The influence of Daenerys’ heritage has been visible throughout the texture of her costuming which at times has been scaly in appearance. Yunus & Eliza designed this stunning piece (click here for a closer look) and it really is fit for a queen.

Jessica JonesThe Leather Jacket Award

As with last year there have been a whole slew of leather jacket wearing stunners, but there is one lady who takes wearing this garment to every outfit level and that is Jessica Jones. Not pictured are the very 90s looking jeans that are also glued to her body pretty much all of the time and this signature look makes sense when the show takes a deep dive into her backstory.

CookieWho Rocks a Lot of Polka Dots

Cookie Lyon has gone through a style evolution since she was released from prison going from matching animal prints to high end garments as she has caught up with trends and got accustomed to her wealth. One of my favorites is this Dolce & Gabbana polka dot blouse; perfect for a dramatic exit and a fun take on the tablecloth party trick. Cookie’s always going to eat.

Isaac, Oscar as Nick Wasicsko, Sussman predicts Nick gets eatenBest Mustache – 1980s Edition

Not only did Oscar Isaac take dancing in dad jeans to Bruce Springsteen to new levels, but he also worked this mustache in ways I did not think possible in Show Me a Hero. The mini-series from David Simon is terrific and devastating and not just for the 80s fashion. And even several months after watching it still makes my heart ache when I think about Oscar Isaac’s performance.

Mad Men 7.13 RogerBest Mustache – 1970s Edition

Of all the Mad Men characters who would embrace a new decade with some additional facial hair it really makes sense that it would be Roger Sterling. It could easily be kinda skeezy (and of course Roger has entered this territory on more than one occasion), but there’s also something elder statesmen about it and that’s what he is. And I would happily watch an endless loop of Roger and Peggy hanging out in their now deserted office.

The Knick - BertieTop Hat Placement and Male Nudity on Cable

Alleviating the awkward of the first time with cute top hat parlor tricks is Bertie on The Knick and it is all around adorable. While this is the most of Michael Angarano that we get to see, cable has embraced male nudity this season on a level we haven’t previously seen with both The Leftovers and The Affair showing far more dudes naked than women this year. Game of Thrones you have some catching up to do.

Broad City Val#LadySuitWatch2015 Shorts Winner

My response to seeing Abbi as Val for the first time is pretty much the same as Ilana’s jaw on the floor expression:

Ladysuits of the shorts variety are classic cabaret attire and I am so here for this Judy Garland/Liza Minnelli style and singing mashup inspiration.

Master of None#LadySuitWatch2015 Patterned Shirt Winner

Denise is not only stylish as hell as demonstrated by her movie premiere ladysuit wearing ways, but she is also one of the best things about Aziz Ansari’s excellent Master of None helping make a citizen’s arrest in the stellar “Ladies and Gentleman” and offering up sound dating advice (even if she ends up ignoring it).

The BridgeThe Outwear and Boots Crime Fighting Title

Season 3 of The Bridge (Broen/Bron) lost one of its main stars, but didn’t lose any of its quality introducing a new partner for Saga who turned out to be just as compelling (if not even more so than his predecessor – sorry Martin). Style wise the pair complement each other rather well favoring classic coats and boots for their crime fighting attire; Saga is still all about the olive leather pants and Henrik also tucks his trousers into his boots because who wants those flapping in the wind while running after a suspect.

FortitudeBest Reason to Invest in a Big Warm Coat

Fortitude is part X-Files like mystery, part exploration of the human condition in an extreme and isolated environment. It is also a very good advert for furry hoods and big coats; yes I even invested in my own.

Peggy CarterRed Lipstick Queen

There is plenty to love about Peggy Carter and season 2 is just a couple of weeks away! Agent Carter also gets added to the How TV Ate My Wardrobe list in the makeup department as I invested in Peggy’s Besame 1946 lipstick and there is also the bonus of beautiful packaging along with fantastic red lips.

Wet Hot American SummerLake Bell and David Wain in Season 1 of the Netflix original series "Wet Hot American Summer" Credit: Saeed Adyani, Netflix [Via MerlinFTP Drop]Denim Dream

1981 was a great year for denim and there is a residual 70s influence on fashion in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp with high waisted flares and dungaree delights. Also pairing anything with short shorts is fair game.

April Ludgate Parks and Rec finaleBest Future April Ludgate

2015 saw the end of Parks and Recreation prompting plenty of finale tears. This also means saying goodbye to one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s biggest style influences and I am happy to report that future April Ludgate is still very much in our sartorial good graces.

Hannibal 3.01 Bedelia in blueWhat to Wear on Your European Vacation

Traveling across Europe with Hannibal Lecter means packing your finest threads and Bedelia is up for that challenge with this blue 1940s spy looking ensemble even if this is the opposite of staying incognito.

You're the WorstSunglasses I Need in my Life

Yes I am still highly coveting Gretchen’s round opal yellow Wayfarer sunglasses for the second year in a row.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Beach House GinaMost On Point Accessorizing Part 2

Gina is not just the TV Ate My Wardrobe Sweater Queen (her turtleneck game has been strong all season), but she’s also the reason why I yell “Wolfie” at the screen whenever any of the direwolves pop up on Game of Thrones. So when Gina appeared on screen in the episode “Beach House,” which kicked off the new year for Brooklyn Nine-Nine in this hat/scarf/glove combo it also caused me to yell “Wolfie” on this occasion too.

LookingFestive Relationship Goals

Looking is almost over (*sob*) and before its one final outing in the form of a TV movie next year, let us bask in Eddie’s Santa outfit and how AgustĂn went from loathsome narcissist to the dude (and ship) I was heavily invested in by the end of season 2. Good character development, show.

Stay tuned for Part 2 coming next week.

New Agent Carter Season 2 Trailer and Peggy’s New Sunglasses

18 Nov

2016 will be kicking off to a good start when Agent Carter returns on Tuesday, January 5 to ABC with a two-hour premiere event. Peggy is making the move from New York to Hollywood and while she certainly could make an amazing film star there are matters of national security that she will be preoccupied with.

In the season 2 trailer we see several returning faces such as James D’Arcy as Jarvis and Enver Gjokaj as Daniel Sousa, plus new cast member Reggie Austin who looks set to be a new love interest for Peggy. Queen of the double cross Bridget Regan will be back as arch enemy Dottie although she isn’t in the new preview. Sadly it doesn’t look like Peggy’s bestie Angie will be making the trip west and while Lyndsy Fonseca was definitely in talks to appear in this new season there hasn’t been any confirmation of this.

Here is the first look at Peggy in Los Angeles courtesy of the official Agent Carter Twitter including plenty of fantastic costuming and red lipstick to gaze in wonder at. Get ready to swoon at all things Hayley Atwell.

And here she is in a first still disembarking from the plane looking cool as fuck in red sunglasses. Sunglasses which rival Gretchen from You’re the Worst for how much I’m coveting them (regular readers will know this is a big deal). The sunny climate calls for appropriate accessorizing and they also make an appearance in the trailer and red is an important color in Peggy’s lookbook.

Update! For anyone wondering what make the sunglasses are, Steve in the comments helpfully notes that they are by Celine.

Update Part 2! Thanks to Ashley in the comments the sunglasses have now been identified as coming from Old Focals and this has been confirmed by Agent Carter costume designer Giovanna Melton on Twitter.IMG_3144For more Agent Carter including key art for the new season (with Peggy in signature red and blue) head here and check back for more updates.

Update! Agent Carter will return later this month (January 19) and sadly not this week (because the State of the Union is happening earlier – thanks, Obama). But still not that long to go before we get to see Peggy in all her glory again. Get the red lipstick at the ready.

Agent Carter Season 2 Key Art: Peggy Heads to Hollywood

25 Sep

A new coast for Peggy Carter moving from New York to Los Angeles for season 2 of Agent Carter and Entertainment Weekly first unveiled the new striking image of Hayley Atwell as Peggy earlier today.

If you’re attending New York Comic-Con you will have the chance to pick one up from the Marvel booth and even though the location has changed a lot is still the same. First of all Peggy is in her signature red and blue; the hat has gone for now but the red lipstick is still a vital part of her look. And she still looks ready for whatever shit gets thrown her way and you know there will be plenty of that. One thing I’m really hoping for more of in season 2 is Peggy’s friendship with waitress/actress Angie and Lyndsy Fonseca should be back (plus it makes total sense that she would move to LA considering her acting ambitions).   Agent Carter is set to return midseason sometime in 2016.

Agent Carter Season 2 Comic-Con Poster

2 Jul

Peggy Carter is moving to Hollywood for season 2 of Agent Carter and she is taking some of her co-workers with her. So far it has been confirmed that James D’Arcy (Edwin Jarvis) and Enver Gjokaj (Agent Daniel Sousa) will be back with Lyndsy Fonseca, Bridget Regan and Chad Michael Murray in talks to return. It would make a lot of sense if Fonseca’s Angie headed out west with Peggy considering her acting dreams and this is one lady friendship I would like to see a lot more of. Regan makes an excellent foil and her ties to the overall MCU backstory as part of the Black Widow Program make her inclusion seem all the more likely.

A second season was not always a sure thing as it sadly Agent Carter is far from a ratings hit and so it already feels like a victory of sorts that we’re getting more Peggy Carter. The cast will appear at Comic-Con next Friday (July 10) and this poster will be available at the Marvel booth (#2329) from Thursday. The limited edition Comic-Con poster was unveiled by Entertainment Weekly showing off the new location complete with the old Hollywoodland sign and Jarvis in tow.

Agent CarterWhile I’m sure the panel will offer up some season 2 scoop there has been some hints given regarding what to expect from this new location and executive producer Michele Fazekas explains “In Los Angeles, you have the spectacular wealth, glamour and beauty right next to the grit and crime—often right up against each other. We’re very much being inspired by Noir films.”

With Jarvis the chemistry and fun back and forth is hard to deny but how do they account for him joining Peggy in LA? The explanation from Fazekas is vague and this only adds to the intrigue “That was always the challenge. He’s not an agent. The case for the first season is over, so the biggest question for us this season was: We love Peggy and Jarvis together, that’s a really important relationship, how do we keep them together? LA has provided us a really nice, organic way to do so.”

Look out for more coverage of Agent Carter from Comic-Con and Hayley Atwell really wants to get back to work.
