This has been a much quieter week on the style front than the last bumper “Out of the Box” and this makes sense as yesterday was Thanksgiving; if you were celebrating then I hope you had a fabulous one! Also, Happy Gilmore Girls Day! This is pretty much what I plan on doing today. In all things Gilmore and style here is my rundown of the best of the premiere red carpet and I also took a look at the fashion of the early ’00s through the 2016 lens.
On the menu this week we have very cute premiere dresses and a whole eclectic mix of events. Plus roundtable season is back! At the London premiere of Allied, Lizzy Caplan wears an Elie Saab that is not only the ideal amount of sheer but also gives off great polka dot and red lipstick. Pretty much perfect.Yara Shahidi has become a bit of an “Out of the Box” fixture and part of this is down to her versatile style; at the Marie Claire Young Women’s Honors she goes for fresh and funky in Tadashi Shoji giving off some fun floral vibes with a spirally twist.
Plus a bonus fantastic selfie from the night with a super sleek bobbed Gina Rodriguez.
The first major awards nominations came out this week and the Independent Spirit Awards is always a favorite. They tend to skew different to all the other major awards on account of the whole indie aspect (of course there is overlap) and they always deliver on the red carpet style front. Jenny Slate and Edgar Ramirez were on hand to announce the nominations and are giving good presenter style; not too fancy, not too casual. Also bold pink shoes are always welcome.
For the full list of nominations (and pretty much a list of films I want to see) head here. This week President Obama presented 21 Americans with the Presidential Medal of Freedom; one of the recipients was Ellen DeGeneres and it is hard to watch this clip without getting chocked up and teary as both Ellen and Barack Obama did. And it really is “easy to forget now just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages 20 years ago.”
This photo of the pair is a delight and Ellen as always is crushing the ladysuit game and gives such good pattern clashing.
Here is a full look at this fabulous burgundy plaid suit as Ellen waits to get in to the White House.
Roundtable season is here! And we all know how I feel about this (if you don’t then know I went full klaxon on Twitter when THR released who the group was). Amy Adams pretty much has a reserved seat at this table as this is now her fifth roundtable over the last seven years showing just how strong her presence is at every award season. I adore her so I am all good with this. Somehow she also gets the worst outfit. And in fun THR roundtable stats; three of these women (Adams, Bening and Portman) all featured on the inaugural cover back in 2010.
Taraji P. Henson gives great roundtable as last year’s TV drama actress discussion showed and as I mentioned last week I am very excited about Hidden Figures.
They’ve gone for the dark ensembles to give off the serious vibe, which is one of the go to THR roundtable editorial staples with Emma Stone and Naomie Harris taking best dressed and Annette Bening getting best lipstick. As with the TV roundtable series the movie ones will air on SundanceTV, but you can read the transcript and watch the videos at The Hollywood Reporter.
Now I’m going to get back to Gilmore Girls and have a fantastic rest of your weekend!
A mostly casual “Out of the Box” this week with plenty of panel outfits on offer with a dash of award show performance ensembles, an important makeup campaign, magazine editorials and a lovely treat to end on. The 92 Y and Hollywood Reporter evening with The Americans didn’t give anything away for season 5, but there was a whole lot of insight and fun including a discussion about Keri Russell’s “Emmy vein” and you can read all about it here.
What I didn’t mention is this spot on panel attire in that it is super casual with a dash of fancy with a pair of white Louboutins. Also an ideal fall sweater/skinny jeans pairing and you could easily switch the pumps for boots; great daytime casual. At Entertainment Weekly’s PopFest Mandy Moore also does the heels/jeans thing dressing it up with a blazer; giving great vertical stripe and light pink lip color. I haven’t seen any of This is Us yet because Too Much TV and I am impressed that I don’t know what the whole twist is yet. *cue me finding out later today*For my honeymoon I bought two new striped tops and then added to my collection with yet another while on this trip; I am very much part of the “you can never have enough striped tops” school. Amanda Peet is giving classic stripes and skinny jeans and yep, I’m here for it.The Crazy-Ex Girlfriend cast delivering on a very active panel and it might only be two-episodes in, but this new season is magical on every level. “Daddy Lessons” is up there as one of my most played songs this year from both “Lemonade” and the Dixie Chicks tour so when Beyoncé played with the Dixie Chicks at the 2016 CMA Awards it was the perfect marriage over both versions. This was a phenomenal performance and I was smiling so much throughout my cheeks began to hurt by the end.
And you can get a free download of this song from Soundcloud! Thanks guys!
A couple of months ago MAC teamed up with Taraji P. Henson for a limited edition collection and gave us this fierce as fuck campaign image. Now MAC has announced that come February 2017, Henson and her Empire co-star Jussie Smollett will be ambassadors for their Viva Glam line. Viva Glam started in 1994 and 100 percent of proceeds from a Viva Glam MAC product have gone to the MAC AIDS Fund raising $430 million in sales.
This is a really striking image of the pair and that lip color sure looks incredible. I will definitely be adding to my collection when it is released in February. In this landscape of too much TV when new full seasons are released on streaming platform there is often a mixture of excitement and dread (today it is The Crown delivering these feelings). Good Girls Revolt is one such project (especially as my Gilmore Girls catch-up continues) and I am thoroughly enjoying this drama, the female friendships and of course the costuming. Star Genevieve Angelson discusses the clothing aspect in Interview magazine and the accompanying photoshoot includes some super high waisted pant treats.
“There are the romantic relationships in the script, but my personal romantic relationship was with the costume designer. We would create names for certain outfits… I had a jumpsuit I named Larry. I was just waiting for the episode where Larry would come out and we would be together. This is weird now, isn’t it? I’ve anthropomorphized a jumpsuit.”
I am looking forward to seeing Larry in action and that seems like a totally appropriate jumpsuit name.Because sometimes the perfect outfit involves a grey T-shirt, sunglasses and a beardy Jake Gyllenhaal waving while at Jimmy Kimmel Live!
New York Fashion Week, TIFF, shows ending, reunions and other behind the scenes shenanigans on Instagram this week. September continues to deliver.
Friday Night Lights cast hangouts get me every single time. This is no exception.
Now for NYFW and at Opening Ceremony this is a whole lot of comic actors to adore, all wearing fabulous clothes.
More Alia Shawkat and the Rachel Antonoff Betty and Veronica collection was showcased in a super fun and imaginative way, with Shawkat being one of the models.
So many heart eyes at Phoebe Robinson in Tracy Reese at NYFW and I am really looking forward to reading You Can’t Touch My Hair, which is out next month.
All eyes are on Belfast to see which Game of Thrones cast members are heading to Northern Ireland for season 7 and while this bar hang is not a guarantee that Sansa and Arya will reunite any time soon, I can but dream. I am also here for Maisie William’s double drink choice of a cocktail and what looks like a hot beverage.
The month of everything happening continues with the Toronto Film Festival and Hidden Figures is on my most anticipated list (see also La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, Colossal and Jackie). Glen Powell is pretty much the main reason I stuck with Scream Queens and he’s got the best co-star hangouts at TIFF.
Top notch prom posing skills.
Also at TIFF is Uzo Aduba and this is an incredible pre-premiere shot.
So happy that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend won a couple of Emmys over the weekend. Expect a lot more Emmy Insta next week.
I’m still confident in saying that BrainDead was my favorite show of the summer and while I am sad it is probably done, the finale kept up the absurd/fun/weird/sexy/amazing costume levels.
Is Liv getting a zombie dog? This is a serious cutie.
Masters of Sex returned this week with a promising start to the season after last year’s messiness. Niecy Nash was a welcome presence and she won’t put up with Bill’s self-pity.
The boots and jeans look works well on Joshua Jackson so thank you, Affair costume department.
Time for the weekly installment of I heart the You’re the Worst team; at work on a Saturday.
And then followed by spending the evening together.
Instagram delivers on the TV style front, film festival glamour and on set singing this week. Plus find out some intimate You’re the Worst information and the usual amount of sweater and lipstick coveting.
The Leftovers is still shooting its final season out in Australia and I am glad to see Justin Theroux will be sporting his beard throughout. Liv Tyler captures him here working the leopard print in the hair and makeup trailer.
It has been a bit of a Leftovers watching week as I got the second season for my birthday and I wrote about Kevin’s karaoke here.
The kids from Stranger Things crushed their appearance on The Tonight Show and Questlove captures some of the backstage madness in this group selfie.
Still no details about who Matthew Rhys is playing on Girls but here he is shooting a scene with Lena Dunham, beard and all.
Mindy Kaling has been documenting Adam Pally eating chips on the set of The Mindy Project and I am here for it.
Mindy also continues to document the costuming from her show and studs are definitely in this season.
Spikes too and I’m not sure if this costume or Taraji P. Henson’s own collection. Either way they look terrifying and incredible in equal measure.
The search for the perfect Emmy dress continues and I wonder if we will see any of these on the red carpet come September 18.
I can only see half this sweater, but I know I love it.
You’re the Worst returned last week with a fabulous episode and the cast took over the Backstage Instagram. There’s plenty of behind the scenes videos including Chris Geere showing off a modesty pouch/cock sock. He definitely had to wear one in the season premiere.
Standard lipstick and sunglasses envy.
Chris Geere was also understandably excited to make his talk show debut on The Late Show.
One of my favorite costume designers with one of my favorite actresses. Looking forward to seeing what this pairing brings.
Now for one of my makeup artist faves with another Orange is the New Black stars and this series of photos of Natasha Lyonne are fantastic.
The iZombie set continues to deliver on the fun and the songs.
Greg Williams delivers once again on intimate photographs from the Venice Film Festival and here are a few of my favorites. Starting with Jake getting ready, just because.
Getting up close with super couple Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber. Luckily this dress doesn’t require some awkward lying down.
When in Venice you’ve got to have a boat shot. For more from Greg Williams check out his portraits from the festival at Vanity Fair.
Fall TV premiere dates inch closer – and You’re the Worst is back tonight! – and so plenty of behind the scenes promo is occurring. Plus fabulous guest stars, guest directors and one show is almost forever finished shooting.
A lot of beard to kick off this week’s Insta highlights with Kristofer Hivju and Michael Fassbender. Future Fassy in Game of Thrones possibilities are probably low, but this wouldn’t be his first HBO venture as he was in a couple of Band of Brothers episodes.
Abbi Jacobson on Portlandia alert.
Looking forward to September 20 and the return of these guys (and their new captain). Stephanie Beatriz related glasses envy is still high.
New Girl also returns September 20 and Hannah Simone’s got the co-stars in sunglasses shots on hand. First up Max Greenfield and bathrobes.
And then Zooey Deschanel under an umbrella wearing a headband and check shirt look that I will no doubt be after when this episode airs.
Also back the same week on Fox is Empire and Taraji P. Henson gives a little costume sneak peek featuring some very large hooped earrings.
Welcome back my fave screechy teen on a prestige drama and it looks like Whitney’s going all domestic goddess in a cat covered apron in season 3 of The Affair.
From the summer TCA and the Mr Robot ladies continue to crush it.
To be filed under “this is kind of cool, but also creepy as fuck.”
Eva Longoria is directing an episode of Jane the Virgin this season and everyone is very pleased with this. Also the amount of Brett Dier popping up in these shots would suggest Michael is not going to be dearly departed.
And a ladies only version. I am thrilled to see Bridget Regan kicking it on set.
While we won’t get to see the final season of Girls until early next year, the show is currently wrapping up and these final days are getting the Instagram treatment.
And polaroids to mark Zosia Mamet and Jemima Kirke’s last day shooting.
BrainDead continues to be my favorite show of the summer, but the last two weeks have been lacking any Gustav so hopefully the next episode will rectify this.
Happy You’re the Worst Day! I am so ready.
A really fun mix this week from “Out of the Box” with a makeup campaign, magazine covers and red carpet events delivering the sartorial goods. And we are about to enter the very busy September period – both professionally and personally for me as I’m also getting married next month – and I cannot wait. This week MAC announced a forthcoming collaboration with Taraji P. Henson and sign me up already. The first image of Henson for MAC is super sexy and is giving me flashbacks to her W editorial, which also happened to be my favorite magazine cover from 2015 (and yes it is still on my coffee table).Mary Elizabeth Winstead is currently top of the character style crush list on BrainDead and now the IRL one after this appearance at the premiere for The Hollars in a divine Victoria Beckham frock. As if I need another reason to be lipstick obsessed. Just looking at Sarah Paulson’s Marc Jacobs ensemble in this heat is enough to make me sweat, but despite the August temps Paulson is totally crushing this outfit while on the pre-Emmy trail at this Television Academy event. I am still head over heels in love with her haircut. Continuing his patterned shirt domination is Rami Malek also at the same Television Academy event and the top button done up look continues to work like a charm. Switching things up in a double breasted jacket and Malek is definitely high on the Emmy red carpet most anticipated list. This was also the week he took his first Instagram photo. Big things are happening.I wasn’t entirely bowled over by most September issue efforts this year and it has been left to some of the weekly/bi-monthly magazines to pick up the slack including this fantastic shot of Michelle Obama wearing Jonathan Simkhai on the cover of Variety.
In the piece Obama talks about the range of shows she has guest starred on (Billy on the Street, Carpool Karaoke on the Late, Late Show, iCarly) to the shows she loves right now (The Americans, OITNB) and what she watched when she was growing up (The Mary Tyler Moore Show).
The whole piece is really great in how it explores the decisions Obama has made about which shows to appear on:
“While I am first lady, I wasn’t first lady my whole life. I’m a product of pop culture. I’m a consumer of pop culture, and I know what resonates with people. I know what they’ll get a chuckle out of and what they think is kind of silly. And whenever my team approaches me with ideas and concepts, we’re usually like, ‘Is this really funny? Are people going to understand it?'”
And and there is also an A+ thread about why pop culture is so important “So it becomes very important for the world to see different images of each other, so that, again, we can develop empathy and understanding.” To read the whole thing head here.Somehow it is time for October editions of magazines and we have a contender for magazine cover of the year with Gina Rodriguez giving so much engaging fierce face for Latina. This haircut really is spectacular and I love how confrontational and disarming this look to camera is.
In the piece Rodriguez discusses the Alex Garland project she was shooting over the summer and Annihilation is very high on the movies I can’t wait for list (and not just for Oscar Isaac reasons – the whole cast is fantastic). Luckily Jane the Virgin doesn’t have Rodriguez tied to a Kit Harington no haircut contract clause and while commenting about her Annihilation hair chop she remarks “I am not my beauty. Who I am is not my fucking hair, and to be an actor is to transform.”The whole shoot is spectacular and this is just one of many incredible shots of Rodriguez doing her fashion thing. For more head here.
