The busiest red carpet week since award season was over with the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday and the Met Galaextravaganza on Monday. There are still plenty of other events delivering on the sartorial front with the Tony Awards ‘Meet the Nominees’ press junket, a Netflix Jessica Jones screening and other outings. Plus a fun game of ‘What scenario does Sam Heughan’s Interview editorial make you think of?’Michelle Williams looks cute and chic in a Louis Vuitton (of course) black number at the Tony nominee press shindig; in not shocking news I am obsessing over her embellished collar. Michelle wasn’t included in my Met roundup (I liked the look, but not for the Gala) which was a super hard choice because I really loved the super chunky boots all the LV ladies wore; I would maybe switch out her black pumps here for those boots. While I’m on the subject of shoes; Lupita Nyong’o in flats makes me so happy (because I do adore a flat) and she looks incredibly fresh in a peach lace crop top and skirt. Plus on Instagram, Lupita gives a close up shot of the Tony nominee pin that is the accessory of this celebration.A pure moment of joy from Danielle Brooks and I am excited that Taystee will be back in my life next month (June 17). Plus stripes and leather pleats are very much in my fashion wheelhouse so excellent daytime event outfit choice. Krysten Ritter goes all in on the crimson theme in Altuzarra and bold lip color. Gold spiky Louboutins and a Jimmy Choo clutch finish off a fabulous look courtesy of TV Ate My Wardrobe stylist fave Ilaria Urbinati. Also at the Jessica Jones FYC screening is the other half of one of the best lady friendships on TV right now and Rachael Taylor’s Dion Lee dress looks perfect for swishing in. And for the whole cast hanging out check out this week’s “Behind the Insta-Scenes.”Apparently all I need to like sheer is equal amounts of wine color velvet to break it up and a fantastic velvet collar to boot. Rachel McAdams looks great at the Sonic Sea screening and this is such a good hair length on her.
Trench coats and particularly Burberry trenches are my weakness and Claire Danes in a patterned number from Burberry is ticking SO many boxes.
Interview is on a roll with the TV dudes at the moment and this Sam Heughan photo shoot led to a very fun conversation on Twitter regarding what kind of character you get from the Henley/neckerchief wearing attire above. The interview is also fun and Heughan gives off so many delightful vibes.
Continuing on from yesterday’s Met Galahighlights we’ve got some getting ready and Gala hangout offerings. Plus more from the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner and the Girls ladiesget back to work for their final season.
I have so many questions about the bathroom situation considering the size/constricted nature of some of the gowns (going short seems like a wise choice) and as somehow who has talked about how much they love the use of bathrooms particularly in teen shows, I am so here for this.
This was another favorite look of the night and Danai Gurira is a spectacular force on the red carpet, as Michonne on The Walking Dead and as a writer. There is another reason for Gurira to celebrate this week as her play Eclipsed received six Tony nominations including writing and for best play.
One thing I love about Instagram and fashion posts is the detail you get to appreciate that wouldn’t normally come across in red carpet shots. Case in point the parts of SJP’s Hamilton inspired look.
Now for more White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner including this delightful shot of Michelle Dockery on her way to the event. I adore her yellow Cushnie Et Ochs gown.
Jessica Jones cast hangouts courtesy of the Netflix screening event last night. Also reminding me that I still have over half a season of Daredevil to watch.
If you only follow one stylist on Instagram make it Ilaria Urbinati for lots of dudes in suits treats such as this Scott Speedman delight and plenty of ladies looking amazing (including Krysten Ritter from the event in the previous photo).
That very busy time of year when it is not only New York Fashion Week, but the awards keep on coming and shows are returning/are deep into their filming schedule. It is good for “Behind the Insta-Scenes” as there is plenty of variety this week.
Meanwhile Grant Gustin is also moonlighting over on Supergirl; Gustin and Melissa Benoist do look very good together. I really need to catch up on Supergirl before this episode happens.
A photo posted by Constance Zimmer (@constancezimmer) on
Constance Zimmer’s very on point sweater this weekend gets extra points for the Galentine’s tag (and now I’m sad I forgot to include Rachel and Quinn in this post – next year).
A video posted by Stella Bugbee (@stellabugbee) on
NYFW is all over Instagram including many runway shots and this one from The Cut’s Stella Bugbee captures the fluidity and pretty from the Altuzarra show.
For anyone who has seen the excellent John Mulaney Netflix comedy special The Comeback Kid or if you just like dogs wearing coats – this one is for you.
Happy Galentine’s Day! And once again I want to take this opportunity to celebrate the many amazing lady friendships on television. Over at The A.V. ClubMolly Eichel wrote an essay about how the best love stories on TV are not romantic ones; instead it is the close friendships between women that get this title and I am inclined to agree.
Last year I offered up some dream lady hangout scenarios and I want to do something similar this year with a whole different set of besties (before you wonder where Abbi and Ilana are). Some of these friendships span decades while others are relatively new, but the one thing that is clear is these women will be there for each other whether the drama is small scale or involves saving the world.
A park bench, getting free samples of frozen yogurt, in a bar; wherever is good when it comes to Gretchen and Lindsay on You’re the Worst. This friendship was put to the test during season 2, but Lindsay has been there for Gretchen when her depression consumed her in sophomore year at college and she offers up some excellent advice “wear your stains on the outsides of your clothes, Gretch.”
(I just watched this scene again and it still crushes in every way – yes I am crying)
So whether it is giving relationship pointers advocating against becoming “sweater people,” trying not to talk about dudes or just general getting drunk and chatting shit then this is one friendship I am all in on. Jessica Jones does not let anyone penetrate her hard exterior, well there is one exception and her name is Trish Walker. Trish still has her work cut out, but she does get results that end in reciprocated hugs.Jessica came to live with Trish after the tragedy that befell her family and she then helped her adopted sister of sorts deal with her own shitty abusive situation. There’s not a lot that comes between this pair (aside from Jessica’s refusal to ask for help) and there is plenty of darkness in their lives; however some playful moments did sneak in before Kilgrave including Trish’s costume ideas for superhero Jessica (with the name Jewel to boot) and challenging douchebags in bars to bets they can never win. More of this please.Maggie and Emma have their own challenges on Playing House including raising a baby together and all the ups and downs that come with being this close to someone. Emma stayed when Maggie’s husband strayed and whether it is getting into a Kenny Loggins concert, winning the paddleboat race or just dealing with dating after having a baby they are always there for each other in a big way. The newest friendship is also maybe the one that is most needed and while Alicia Florrick featured last year she has definitely been lacking in the lady friends department since her big break up with Kalinda way back when. In the last episode Alicia broke down and blurted out years worth of resentment and instead of fleeing, Lucca embraced Alicia and shared her sad story (which I find hard to believe considering just how charming she is). Finally Alicia has someone to booze with where there are no other complications such as unrequited feelings or bitterness. An old friendship to a lot of you, but one that is very new to me and I’ve just hit the halfway point of Gilmore Girls’ first season. Rory has already had a bit of a Carrie Bradshaw BFF moment – where she made everything about her – but she’s young and she came through for Lane and her hair touching drama. So far going to different schools has not been an issue and Lane is just as likely to be hanging out at Rory’s or grabbing something to eat at Luke’s with her bestie. I am looking forward to seeing how this friendship develops over time because there is nothing quite like teen female friendships (see MSCL, Freaks and Geeks). Hopefully Gilmore Girls will also fulfill the required bathroom conversation time that all other teen shows we have covered on TV Ate My Wardrobe have excelled at.
Going to leave you with the traditional “Time After Time” Anne, April and Donna rendition that has become this site’s Galentine’s Day anthem.
For more Galentine’s Day celebrations head here and here.
More fancy pants behind the scenes shenanigans with a relaxed edge at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Plus babies, celebrating the return of Agent Carter and some A+ 70s outfits.
Will Forte showed that his new half-shaved look wasn’t just a onetime TCA affair (his entire body is like this, yep everything) and gave Justin Theroux’s expressive eyebrows a workout of Leftovers proportions at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
A photo posted by Justin Baldoni (@justinbaldoni) on
Award shows can all get a bit much for some. The Jane the Virgin table also featured heavily in reactions to the super adorable Jacob Tremblay. They are all of us.
A very super smiley Liv Tyler on her way to the awards and it is probably a very good thing that she didn’t have to lie down to avoid crease awkwardness.
Also to be filed under “things that seem too magical to be true” is Kroll Show originals Gil and George appearing on The Bachelor live show and Jenny Slate filming her reaction. Yep, I still miss Kroll Show, but I am thrilled that Gil and George are still out there in the world.
More adorable babies and hitting that ‘cast members who still hang out after their show has finished’ sweet spot. Also Dave Annable wins best Instagram caption contest this week.
A smorgasbord of pattern clashing and bold color from the many outfit changes for Mindy Kaling on The Mindy Project. Even by this shows standards this is a lot for one day and it’s hard to pick a favorite; edging toward the floral sweater and pajamas with the dragonfly dress also wrestling for top place.
While I’m on the subject of jeans – I am coveting these ones Gina Rodriguez is wearing hard and the whole 70s vibe of this outfit is ticking all the boxes.
The awards shows they keep on coming and the Critics’ Choice celebration continued the Mr Robot hot streak. Plus plenty of amazing red carpet looks from those who attended last weekend’s Golden Globes and a whole host of different faces (including many beloved by TV Ate My Wardrobe).
Combing one of the big trends from the Golden Globes (sparkles) with perfect for shimmying pleats; Krysten Ritter’s excellent Zuhair Murad track record continues. At the Netflix TCA panel it was announced that Jessica Jones has been renewed for a second season and I cannot wait.
Aya Cash stakes an early claim on #LadySuitWatch2016 in this excellent tux and gold tipped pumps.
A clutch close up because Aya Cash’s Les Petits Joueurs should be seen in all its “AAH!” glory and last time we saw one of these fabulous Lego bags was from another award season shindig.
Judith Light continues to work the red (blue) carpet like no other slaying in a turtleneck and jacket casually slung over her shoulders finishing it all off with a floor length (and pocketed) skirt.
More #LadySuitWatch2016 with Master of None’s Lena Waithe (posing with co-star Kelvin Yu) delivering polka dot perfection in a fun twist on this look and continuing pattern shirt dominance.
The You’re the Worst cast maybe went home empty handed, but they killed it on the red carpet. Every detail right down to the pocket square on Chris Geere’s Ted Baker ensemble is incredible.
Another amazing maroon dress and Rachel McAdams stands out in an Elie Saab frock which manages to make me love sheer (on this very special occasion). Love the delicate chain straps, tousled hair and bold lip color.
More lipstick yes from another winner and Kirsten Dunst does delicate tiered sparkles in this very 20s/30s Chanel Couture frock.
Icy blue was a big trend on the Critics’ Choice blue carpet with Constance Wu leading the pack in this ethereal Peter Langner number.
More sequin delights and Sarah Paulson’s Naeem Khan dress has a fun silk neckline and sleeve cap spin adding that extra something something.
Another recent repeat awards best dressed and another take on cornflower blue from Saoirse Ronan in Antonio Berardi. The sleeve detail is spectacular.
The Middle’s Eden Sher kills it in Rubin Singer and I’m so here for this fun play on black and white stripes.I love Constance Zimmer’s striped Tracy Reese dress as much as I love her reaction to winning (which I love a lot).
Another speech/winner I adore is Carrie Coon and she’s bringing the bold in blonde and a whole lot of yellow.
Pattern clashing at its best from Zoe Kazan and her take on the red carpet experience is worth reading in this love letter of sorts – in three parts found here, here and here – to her stylist and friend Leith Clark.
Ditching delicate for fun and I am always partial to a bit of Mary Katrantzou; Alicia Vikander is the ideal person to pull this look off.
Looking fabulous in floral sleeved Randi Rahm and Tracee Ellis Ross demonstrates how to make a black dress stand out.As does Bryce Dallas Howard in plunging Balmain and as with her Jenny Packham frock at the Golden Globes last week she bought this off the rack (this time from Forward by Elyse Walker).
Posing in front of a superb piece of fan art capturing the amazing Helen dancing in her spanx scene from The Affair is Maura Tierney working a Max Mara skirt and top with super casual fancy aplomb.
Ditching the tie once again, but sticking with Dior is winner Rami Malek posing with co-star Portia Doubleday (whose dress I like when you can’t tell just how sheer it is *shakes fist at this trend*) in front of the Mr Robot fan art mural.
In my head they are comparing the amount of desperation, sadness, confusion and sweat levels in both of their amazing performances.
We’ve got New Year’s celebrations covered, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants reunions galore, costume sneak peeks and a snowy day at work as the weather finally turns cold in this week’s collection from Instagram.
A photo posted by Amber Tamblyn (@amberrosetamblyn) on
You might already know my feelings about IRL friendships which have developed from pretend ones on screen, but if you don’t then just know that I am so here for all of this. The cast of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants are still super tight including New Year’s Eve hangout tight.
Blake Lively is also getting in on the Amber Tamblyn action and this implies that maybe there’s some husband sharing occurring somewhere. Maybe this is a sequel in the works. Lively also gave a shout out to America Ferrera’s new show Superstore and there’s more between these ladies than just the perfect jeans.
A photo posted by Amber Tamblyn (@amberrosetamblyn) on
The quality of this shot isn’t great, but I didn’t want to leave Alexis Bledel out of the mix, especially as I just jumped (albeit very late) on board the Gilmore Girlstrain. Plus I think I might need to give Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants a rewatch.
More IRL friendships and New Year’s party shenanigans featuring a good level of outfit sparkles, but in this case the real life relationship came before the fictional one (and looks a whole lot happier than the one we see on our screens). Lena Dunham just announced that Girls will end in 2017 after season 6 and I agree that by then it will be time to call it quits. Season 5 returns next month.
A video posted by Katie Aselton (@katieaselton) on
This lovely rendition from Charlie Day and Mark Duplass just made me realize that we didn’t even try and attempt to sing Auld Lang Syne this year with the obligatory only knowing a tiny portion of the lyrics and mumble singing the rest.
A photo posted by Raúl Castillo (@officialraulcastillo) on
This was a fun end of year Instagram thing where you can find out your nine most liked photos from 2015 and post them to your feed. Raul Castillo noticed a repeating theme in his selection (my theme was selfies, food and puppies).
A photo posted by Stephanie Beatriz (@iamstephbeatz) on
Brooklyn Nine-Nine was back last night much to our delight. Good spy like photo taking skills from Stephanie Beatriz with an unsuspecting Andre Braugher in the background.
Expect to see way more Brie Larson (and Jacob Tremblay because this kid can rock a tux) around these parts as award season kicks into full gear. Here are Larson and Tremblay with their NBR awards and I am very much looking forward to sobbing through at least half of Room.
Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2015” costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking; we want to celebrate the work of television’s best costume designers.
Now is the turn of a huge range of shows we have been watching this year from network, cable and streaming with comedy, drama and all those other hard to categorize scripted offerings. There has been so many fantastic individual moments that we have had to split this post into two otherwise the scrolling would be endless.
Here is Part 1 of the standout costuming moments in 2015.
Most On Point Accessorizing
What better way to appease the dragon that has done a runner than wear a necklace bearing a very familiar image and this comes in particularly handy for Daenerys in “The Dance of Dragons” when Drogon makes a very timely entrance. The influence of Daenerys’ heritage has been visible throughout the texture of her costuming which at times has been scaly in appearance. Yunus & Eliza designed this stunning piece (click here for a closer look) and it really is fit for a queen.
The Leather Jacket Award
As with last year there have been a whole slew of leather jacket wearing stunners, but there is one lady who takes wearing this garment to every outfit level and that is Jessica Jones. Not pictured are the very 90s looking jeans that are also glued to her body pretty much all of the time and this signature look makes sense when the show takes a deep dive into her backstory.
Who Rocks a Lot of Polka Dots
Cookie Lyon has gone through a style evolution since she was released from prison going from matching animal prints to high end garments as she has caught up with trends and got accustomed to her wealth. One of my favorites is this Dolce & Gabbana polka dot blouse; perfect for a dramatic exit and a fun take on the tablecloth party trick. Cookie’s always going to eat.
Best Mustache – 1980s Edition
Not only did Oscar Isaac take dancing in dad jeans to Bruce Springsteen to new levels, but he also worked this mustache in ways I did not think possible in Show Me a Hero. The mini-series from David Simon is terrific and devastating and not just for the 80s fashion. And even several months after watching it still makes my heart ache when I think about Oscar Isaac’s performance.
Best Mustache – 1970s Edition
Of all the Mad Men characters who would embrace a new decade with some additional facial hair it really makes sense that it would be Roger Sterling. It could easily be kinda skeezy (and of course Roger has entered this territory on more than one occasion), but there’s also something elder statesmen about it and that’s what he is. And I would happily watch an endless loop of Roger and Peggy hanging out in their now deserted office.
Top Hat Placement and Male Nudity on Cable
Alleviating the awkward of the first time with cute top hat parlor tricks is Bertie on The Knick and it is all around adorable. While this is the most of Michael Angarano that we get to see, cable has embraced male nudity this season on a level we haven’t previously seen with both The Leftovers and The Affair showing far more dudes naked than women this year. Game of Thrones you have some catching up to do.
#LadySuitWatch2015 Shorts Winner
My response to seeing Abbi as Val for the first time is pretty much the same as Ilana’s jaw on the floor expression:
Ladysuits of the shorts variety are classic cabaret attire and I am so here for this Judy Garland/Liza Minnelli style and singing mashup inspiration.
#LadySuitWatch2015 Patterned Shirt Winner
Denise is not only stylish as hell as demonstrated by her movie premiere ladysuit wearing ways, but she is also one of the best things about Aziz Ansari’s excellent Master of None helping make a citizen’s arrest in the stellar “Ladies and Gentleman” and offering up sound dating advice (even if she ends up ignoring it).
The Outwear and Boots Crime Fighting Title
Season 3 of The Bridge (Broen/Bron) lost one of its main stars, but didn’t lose any of its quality introducing a new partner for Saga who turned out to be just as compelling (if not even more so than his predecessor – sorry Martin). Style wise the pair complement each other rather well favoring classic coats and boots for their crime fighting attire; Saga is still all about the olive leather pants and Henrik also tucks his trousers into his boots because who wants those flapping in the wind while running after a suspect.
Best Reason to Invest in a Big Warm Coat
Fortitude is part X-Files like mystery, part exploration of the human condition in an extreme and isolated environment. It is also a very good advert for furry hoods and big coats; yes I even invested in my own.
Red Lipstick Queen
There is plenty to love about Peggy Carter and season 2 is just a couple of weeks away! Agent Carter also gets added to the How TV Ate My Wardrobe list in the makeup department as I invested in Peggy’s Besame 1946 lipstick and there is also the bonus of beautiful packaging along with fantastic red lips.
Denim Dream
1981 was a great year for denim and there is a residual 70s influence on fashion in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp with high waisted flares and dungaree delights. Also pairing anything with short shorts is fair game.
Best Future April Ludgate
2015 saw the end of Parks and Recreationprompting plenty of finale tears. This also means saying goodbye to one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s biggest style influences and I am happy to report that future April Ludgate is still very much in our sartorial good graces.
What to Wear on Your European Vacation
Traveling across Europe with Hannibal Lecter means packing your finest threads and Bedelia is up for that challenge with this blue 1940s spy looking ensemble even if this is the opposite of staying incognito.
Sunglasses I Need in my Life
Yes I am still highly coveting Gretchen’s round opal yellow Wayfarer sunglasses for the second year in a row.
Most On Point Accessorizing Part 2
Gina is not just the TV Ate My Wardrobe Sweater Queen (her turtleneck game has been strong all season), but she’s also the reason why I yell “Wolfie” at the screen whenever any of the direwolves pop up on Game of Thrones. So when Gina appeared on screen in the episode “Beach House,” which kicked off the new year for Brooklyn Nine-Nine in this hat/scarf/glove combo it also caused me to yell “Wolfie” on this occasion too.
Festive Relationship Goals
Looking is almost over (*sob*) and before its one final outing in the form of a TV movie next year, let us bask in Eddie’s Santa outfit and how Agustín went from loathsome narcissist to the dude (and ship) I was heavily invested in by the end of season 2. Good character development, show.
Star Wars is taking over this week and we’ve got more photos from the cast on their epic promotional journey. Plus plenty of TV action including a Jessica Jones treat hidden in the middle as it is guest star spoilery, an Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt singalong and the Orange is the New Black ladies coming out in force to support one of their own on Broadway.
A video posted by Lupita Nyong'o (@lupitanyongo) on
Starting with something very cool this week and a super mesmerizing video of Lupita Nyong’o for The Guardian. Getting a whole lot of turtleneck joy from this outfit.
A photo posted by Lupita Nyong'o (@lupitanyongo) on
Lupita looked like a knockout at the Star Wars: The Force Awakens world premiere on Monday and here is a selection of the earrings she got to choose between to add even more sparkle to her ensemble.
Best renewal news as The Leftoverswill be back for a third and final season, which gives Justin Theroux a chance to flex his new Instagram muscles (dude is already a pro). I love that the hair and makeup team are all wearing Guilty Remnant like attire.
Things are a lot better between this pair in real life than for their onscreen counterparts. So much so that Justin Theroux has begun to morph into Liv Tyler’s head.
Speaking of co-stars hanging out – the Orange is the New Black ladies turned out in force for Danielle Brooks’ big Broadway opening night for The Color Purple and this video is giving me so many feelings.
A photo posted by America Ferrera (@americaferrera) on
America Ferrera looking terrific for the crazy early Golden Globes announcement (my live stream kept buffering so I didn’t get to see a whole lot of Ferrera presenting, I did get to see Dennis Quaid pronounce “Saoirse”) and this dress definitely falls into the ‘perfect for announcing award nominations’ category (if there is one).
A photo posted by Krysten Ritter (@therealkrystenritter) on
So this is definitely a guest star spoiler which is why I have buried it in the middle of the post and I love how Jessica Jones got their Daredevil fill in this way. Firstly we need more Rosario Dawson on TV and secondly it worked very well for the narrative. And look how happy they both are.
A video posted by Tituss Burgess (@titusssawthis) on
This was meant to go up in last week’s post and it is just too good to let go; who wouldn’t want to watch The Wiz with the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt team?!
And because I am constantly wondering where Robyn is – now Jason has gone can she come back please? – here is Jess Weixler looking stunning on her wedding day (ditto Jessica Chastain) and this is giving me wedding dress ideas (which I really need to start thinking about).
News faces to the TV Instagram world, plus plenty of finales, shows to catch up on and behind the scenes action in this week’s collection. Film Insta is also making an appearance with fabulous outfits, singing and selfie sticks.
Look who joined Instagram this week! And he’s already been on a posting blaze including this very muddy looking shot from The Leftovers. Those jeans are going to feel mighty crunchy.
It hasn’t been easy for Kevin Garvey this season on The Leftovers in the getting covered in substances department and there has also been plenty of blood, sweat and tears (and snot). Luckily it is all smiles behind the camera. Delighted to see the all important aviators making an appearance.
All fun and games for the Dickie Dollar Scholars on Scream Queens and I don’t have any opinions on the finale/killer reveal yet as I won’t be watching it until later. I don’t have high hopes tbh as the season in general has been pretty patchy, but Glen Powell is the gift that keeps on giving.
Super cute casual outfit from Mindy Kaling and I am so behind on the Mindy Project. The theme of this month is realizing that the festive season will hopefully be a good time to catch up on all the TV (when I’ve done everything else first).
A photo posted by Krysten Ritter (@therealkrystenritter) on
These are some very Jessica Jones looking jeans (of which I have many feelings about) and unlike last week I have managed to watch a whole bunch of episodes. SO many yell out loud HOLY SHIT moments and I still have 2 episodes to go.
A photo posted by Costume Designers Guild (@cdglocal892) on
Agents of SHIELD costume designer Ann Foley took over the Costume Designers Guild official Instagram this week and there’s plenty of behind the scenes action including the cast and those who make the costumes. Would highly recommend checking it out.

Gonna end things with some film Insta highlights this week as the Star Wars press tour cranks up a gear and these two beauties work leather and quilted jackets with aplomb.
