A mostly casual “Out of the Box” this week with plenty of panel outfits on offer with a dash of award show performance ensembles, an important makeup campaign, magazine editorials and a lovely treat to end on. The 92 Y and Hollywood Reporter evening with The Americans didn’t give anything away for season 5, but there was a whole lot of insight and fun including a discussion about Keri Russell’s “Emmy vein” and you can read all about it here.
What I didn’t mention is this spot on panel attire in that it is super casual with a dash of fancy with a pair of white Louboutins. Also an ideal fall sweater/skinny jeans pairing and you could easily switch the pumps for boots; great daytime casual. At Entertainment Weekly’s PopFest Mandy Moore also does the heels/jeans thing dressing it up with a blazer; giving great vertical stripe and light pink lip color. I haven’t seen any of This is Us yet because Too Much TV and I am impressed that I don’t know what the whole twist is yet. *cue me finding out later today*For my honeymoon I bought two new striped tops and then added to my collection with yet another while on this trip; I am very much part of the “you can never have enough striped tops” school. Amanda Peet is giving classic stripes and skinny jeans and yep, I’m here for it.The Crazy-Ex Girlfriend cast delivering on a very active panel and it might only be two-episodes in, but this new season is magical on every level. “Daddy Lessons” is up there as one of my most played songs this year from both “Lemonade” and the Dixie Chicks tour so when Beyoncé played with the Dixie Chicks at the 2016 CMA Awards it was the perfect marriage over both versions. This was a phenomenal performance and I was smiling so much throughout my cheeks began to hurt by the end.
And you can get a free download of this song from Soundcloud! Thanks guys!
A couple of months ago MAC teamed up with Taraji P. Henson for a limited edition collection and gave us this fierce as fuck campaign image. Now MAC has announced that come February 2017, Henson and her Empire co-star Jussie Smollett will be ambassadors for their Viva Glam line. Viva Glam started in 1994 and 100 percent of proceeds from a Viva Glam MAC product have gone to the MAC AIDS Fund raising $430 million in sales.
This is a really striking image of the pair and that lip color sure looks incredible. I will definitely be adding to my collection when it is released in February. In this landscape of too much TV when new full seasons are released on streaming platform there is often a mixture of excitement and dread (today it is The Crown delivering these feelings). Good Girls Revolt is one such project (especially as my Gilmore Girls catch-up continues) and I am thoroughly enjoying this drama, the female friendships and of course the costuming. Star Genevieve Angelson discusses the clothing aspect in Interview magazine and the accompanying photoshoot includes some super high waisted pant treats.
“There are the romantic relationships in the script, but my personal romantic relationship was with the costume designer. We would create names for certain outfits… I had a jumpsuit I named Larry. I was just waiting for the episode where Larry would come out and we would be together. This is weird now, isn’t it? I’ve anthropomorphized a jumpsuit.”
I am looking forward to seeing Larry in action and that seems like a totally appropriate jumpsuit name.Because sometimes the perfect outfit involves a grey T-shirt, sunglasses and a beardy Jake Gyllenhaal waving while at Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Upfronts time and this means plenty of returning and new faces to network events as schedules are announced along with the trailers for shows that could either be here for a few episodes, multiple seasons or anywhere in-between. Day 1 includes Fox, NBC and the Entertainment Weekly and People Upfronts party. Let’s kick off this post with the new show I am most looking forward to from Fox and the return of Leighton Meester and Adam Pally to TV.
And now for the best of the red carpet. As with PaleyFest, TCAs and Comic-Con there is a mixture of fancy to casual with some new additions to #LadySuitWatch2016 in the mix.A very chic and relaxed outfit from Leighton Meester and the one person who makes me want to do a Gossip Girl rewatch. Plus she will be getting to show off her comedy chops and for anyone who watched Gossip Girl you will already know what great comic timing Meester has. On the Last Man on Earth finale Phil shaved off his very hairy side and Will Forte looks a whole lot less scary than the last time he graced these pages. I am very glad I returned to Last Man on Earth after ditching early in season 1 as it is a wonderful and often very bizarre show; it is good to see network TV embracing comedies of this kind.
January Jones looks great in a white ladysuit and red lipstick and Kristen Schaal’s giving me so many collar related feels. I also love that Schaal is a big fan of flats making her very much a woman after my own heart.Jussie Smollett crushing it in a bold blue number and doing the top button done up/no tie thing with aplomb.Another fan of this style choice is Rami Malek, but at the NBC upfront he is leaning much more into his casual preferences. Still top button done up, but in a patterned number with a Members Only like jacket.
Christian Slater also opts for something similar as this pair does the Mr Robot rounds and now might be a good time to tell you to watch the new season 2 promo.
The “infinite loop of insanity” continues and I really want Darlene’s heart shape glasses.Moving on to the Entertainment Weekly and People party, but keeping on the Mr Robot track with Rami Malek changing his top half for this shindig. #LadySuitWatch2016 points for co-star Portia Doubleday in a classic looking black number. All that is missing is some super red lipstick to really complete the ensemble.Samira Wiley’s got the lipstick thing right and gives her cool LBD a color injection with a funky striped clutch. Orange is the New Black returns in a month and you can watch the promo here.Maybe this will be the summer I finally invest in a jumpsuit and my bravery levels will probably extend to a classic black number like this one worn by Yael Grobglas. The only thing I would maybe switch out here is a more colorful pump.Tracee Ellis Ross mixes business with party in a buttoned white plunging stunner.Vanessa Hudgens goes full boho in a 70s inspired sheer and metallic Haney dress and a fantastic looking America Ferrera in red lace floral and strappy shoes at the EW and People Upfront event.
Another award show this week and that means more behind the scenes action from getting ready to after the after parties. Plus Grease: Live live, X-Files props, Empiresleep wars and some high levels of cute in our Insta round-up.
A video posted by Vanessa Hudgens (@vanessahudgens) on
From the actual opening of the show (which was a feat of technical brilliance) and Vanessa Hudgens deserves all the kudos she is getting for her incredible performance. Great lipstick too.

Last night’s episode of New Girl was directed by none other than Nick Miller himself; Jake Johnson and Max Greenfield posted a shot that captures him in all his glory.
This week’s episode of The X-Files set my giddy levels to new highs and being a huge fan of Kumail Nanjiani podcast, The X Files Files it was so great to see him in this super fun episode. This is the file Nanjiani was given and Gillian Anderson’s reaction to this gift is hilarious.
Continuing our Sundance fashion love-in with more knitwear, boots and coat treats for you to scroll through. Plus awards season keeps on keeping on, the American Crime Story red carpet delivers and another fantastic magazine cover has been unveiled. Jena Malone is slaying at the Lovesong premiere in matching black and white checks in an outfit that looks super chic and cozy at the same time. Topping things off with killer red lips and boots.Going slightly more casual with checks is Maya Rudolph at the Mr Pig premiere also earning those all important red lipstick points. Sundance continues to be my fave for all things that I might actually have in my wardrobe. Sparkly jumper dress, black tights and boots for Elisabeth Moss at the premiere for The Free World is the glitzy form of red carpet attire here; count me all in.This is just the best combination of all the things I love from Elisabeth Moss out and about at Sundance. My only concern is the lack of gloves. This calls for a good pair of fingerless chunky knits or some Carol inspiredleather ones.More Sundance red carpet excellence from Tegan and Sara with hints of #LadySuitWatch2016 on display at The Intervention premiere. Tegan’s grey boots are high on my covet list. All the 90s teen movie feelings are being felt as a result of The Intervention red carpet. Also boosted by Natasha Lyonne’s sweater looking like a black version of the dog on the “Odelay” cover.Polka dots pretty (plus pockets!) for America Ferrera at the Producers Guild Awards and this Alexia Maria dress is ticking all our boxes. Ferrera has been a regular on TV Ate My Wardrobe over this busy red carpet season and she recently pointed out she is currently living in a world of clothing extremes.First of all let’s ditch any kind of headlines that refer to a baby bump as if it is an accessory that can be removed at will (see every DM headline ever – i.e. “[insert pregnant celeb] takes baby bump to x”). Secondly the whole “unveiling their baby bump” nonsense can also go. So here is Anne Hathaway wearing a very cute Marc Jacobs dress and yes she looks radiant, but she always tends to pregnancy or not. *end of rant*The kids from Black-ish continue their style domination at the NAACP Awards Nominees’ Luncheon this week. And I still really need to get caught up on this show.Aya Cash was early to #LadySuitWatch2016 and she is keeping a solid jacket game in this gold lame number on the red carpet for The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story (a show that is very high on my most anticipated list). As someone who isn’t in the cast this is ideal attire as it is super cool without being too showy.Angel Parker is playing attorney Shawn Chapman – part of OJ’s Dream Team – and she’s paired a bold red dress with an excellent array of accessories from silver pumps to a mirrored clutch (which looks a lot like this Viola Davis one). Also those all important red lipstick points.Sarah Paulson has been killing it on the red carpet of late and this is another triumph (even if as Samantha Powell mentions this Stella McCartney dress was everywhere in 2012). Such a good color.Amanda Peet’s look wouldn’t be out of place in the top half of this post and as with Aya Cash this is the ideal kind of outfit for someone who is not in the project. Sweater, lipstick and casually slung coat over the shoulder yeses all around. One of my favorite magazine covers of recent years was from Outand this Jussie Smollet shot is another case of letting a strong image do all the talking. In the interview he lays it all out including this:
“God, I’ve never had to talk about this, so I’m trying to find the words. If I had to label myself, I would label myself as a gay man. With that said, I believe that love is the only thing that matters, and I would hope that anybody would leave themselves open — not to gender, but to love. I would hope that people would not close themselves off from what could be if, lo and behold, you meet somebody that just sweeps you off your feet, and you just can’t do anything about it. If we truly believe that we are born this way, then why do we try to stifle the way we were born? If I fall in love down the road with a woman, I’m going to love that woman.”
It is worth checking out the full interview here and there are also more dreamy pictures from the editorial waiting.
Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2015” costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking; we want to celebrate the work of television’s best costume designers.
Now is the turn of a huge range of shows we have been watching this year from network, cable and streaming with comedy, drama and all those other hard to categorize scripted offerings. There has been so many fantastic individual moments that we have had to split this post into two otherwise the scrolling would be endless.
Here is Part 1 of the standout costuming moments in 2015.
Most On Point Accessorizing
What better way to appease the dragon that has done a runner than wear a necklace bearing a very familiar image and this comes in particularly handy for Daenerys in “The Dance of Dragons” when Drogon makes a very timely entrance. The influence of Daenerys’ heritage has been visible throughout the texture of her costuming which at times has been scaly in appearance. Yunus & Eliza designed this stunning piece (click here for a closer look) and it really is fit for a queen.
The Leather Jacket Award
As with last year there have been a whole slew of leather jacket wearing stunners, but there is one lady who takes wearing this garment to every outfit level and that is Jessica Jones. Not pictured are the very 90s looking jeans that are also glued to her body pretty much all of the time and this signature look makes sense when the show takes a deep dive into her backstory.
Who Rocks a Lot of Polka Dots
Cookie Lyon has gone through a style evolution since she was released from prison going from matching animal prints to high end garments as she has caught up with trends and got accustomed to her wealth. One of my favorites is this Dolce & Gabbana polka dot blouse; perfect for a dramatic exit and a fun take on the tablecloth party trick. Cookie’s always going to eat.
Best Mustache – 1980s Edition
Not only did Oscar Isaac take dancing in dad jeans to Bruce Springsteen to new levels, but he also worked this mustache in ways I did not think possible in Show Me a Hero. The mini-series from David Simon is terrific and devastating and not just for the 80s fashion. And even several months after watching it still makes my heart ache when I think about Oscar Isaac’s performance.
Best Mustache – 1970s Edition
Of all the Mad Men characters who would embrace a new decade with some additional facial hair it really makes sense that it would be Roger Sterling. It could easily be kinda skeezy (and of course Roger has entered this territory on more than one occasion), but there’s also something elder statesmen about it and that’s what he is. And I would happily watch an endless loop of Roger and Peggy hanging out in their now deserted office.
Top Hat Placement and Male Nudity on Cable
Alleviating the awkward of the first time with cute top hat parlor tricks is Bertie on The Knick and it is all around adorable. While this is the most of Michael Angarano that we get to see, cable has embraced male nudity this season on a level we haven’t previously seen with both The Leftovers and The Affair showing far more dudes naked than women this year. Game of Thrones you have some catching up to do.
#LadySuitWatch2015 Shorts Winner
My response to seeing Abbi as Val for the first time is pretty much the same as Ilana’s jaw on the floor expression:
Ladysuits of the shorts variety are classic cabaret attire and I am so here for this Judy Garland/Liza Minnelli style and singing mashup inspiration.
#LadySuitWatch2015 Patterned Shirt Winner
Denise is not only stylish as hell as demonstrated by her movie premiere ladysuit wearing ways, but she is also one of the best things about Aziz Ansari’s excellent Master of None helping make a citizen’s arrest in the stellar “Ladies and Gentleman” and offering up sound dating advice (even if she ends up ignoring it).
The Outwear and Boots Crime Fighting Title
Season 3 of The Bridge (Broen/Bron) lost one of its main stars, but didn’t lose any of its quality introducing a new partner for Saga who turned out to be just as compelling (if not even more so than his predecessor – sorry Martin). Style wise the pair complement each other rather well favoring classic coats and boots for their crime fighting attire; Saga is still all about the olive leather pants and Henrik also tucks his trousers into his boots because who wants those flapping in the wind while running after a suspect.
Best Reason to Invest in a Big Warm Coat
Fortitude is part X-Files like mystery, part exploration of the human condition in an extreme and isolated environment. It is also a very good advert for furry hoods and big coats; yes I even invested in my own.
Red Lipstick Queen
There is plenty to love about Peggy Carter and season 2 is just a couple of weeks away! Agent Carter also gets added to the How TV Ate My Wardrobe list in the makeup department as I invested in Peggy’s Besame 1946 lipstick and there is also the bonus of beautiful packaging along with fantastic red lips.
Denim Dream
1981 was a great year for denim and there is a residual 70s influence on fashion in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp with high waisted flares and dungaree delights. Also pairing anything with short shorts is fair game.
Best Future April Ludgate
2015 saw the end of Parks and Recreationprompting plenty of finale tears. This also means saying goodbye to one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s biggest style influences and I am happy to report that future April Ludgate is still very much in our sartorial good graces.
What to Wear on Your European Vacation
Traveling across Europe with Hannibal Lecter means packing your finest threads and Bedelia is up for that challenge with this blue 1940s spy looking ensemble even if this is the opposite of staying incognito.
Sunglasses I Need in my Life
Yes I am still highly coveting Gretchen’s round opal yellow Wayfarer sunglasses for the second year in a row.
Most On Point Accessorizing Part 2
Gina is not just the TV Ate My Wardrobe Sweater Queen (her turtleneck game has been strong all season), but she’s also the reason why I yell “Wolfie” at the screen whenever any of the direwolves pop up on Game of Thrones. So when Gina appeared on screen in the episode “Beach House,” which kicked off the new year for Brooklyn Nine-Nine in this hat/scarf/glove combo it also caused me to yell “Wolfie” on this occasion too.
Festive Relationship Goals
Looking is almost over (*sob*) and before its one final outing in the form of a TV movie next year, let us bask in Eddie’s Santa outfit and how Agustín went from loathsome narcissist to the dude (and ship) I was heavily invested in by the end of season 2. Good character development, show.
Before the deluge of Halloween costume photos we’ve got a scare free collection of TV Instagram highlights with far more treats than tricks including Looking, You’re the Worst, Jane the Virgin and more Daenerys fashion tips.
Welcome to the Looking feels portion of this week’s TV Insta and as the movie starts shooting this week most of the cast are back in San Francisco. It is bittersweet that this charming show is coming to an end so soon, but at least there will be one last final hurrah instead of just getting canceled into oblivion.
Back to the beginning and a super cute shot that is reinforcing my confused shipper feelings. Never have I gone back and forth this much on who I want a character to end up with.
Last week’s episode of You’re the Worst answered the Gretchen mystery in a way that managed to make me want to curl up and sob while still delivering on the laughs, which is an incredibly hard line to walk. Kether Donohue posted a tribute to Aya Cash’s stunning performance giving further insight into this episode and nails what makes this such a special show. Plus this photo delivers on Cash as my sunglasses queen.
Dream aesthetic ahoy from Holly Taylor wearing what looks to be an excellent sweater and living the food dream on the set of The Americans. I’ve said it before, but it is easy to buy that Taylor could be Keri Russell’s daughter from her hair alone.
These might not quite go with the spectacular dragon necklace and the other costume embellishments Daenerys wears on Game of Thrones, but they could hide quite nicely under her blonde locks.
Plenty of singing and dancing from this week’s TV Instagram highlights. Plus costuming sneak peeks and more shows going back into production while others are coming to an end. Ah the cycle of TV (and especially cable shows).
Queen of Dubsmash Hayley Atwell with co-star Enver Gjokaj doing the impossible and making “Uptown Funk” feel fresh again. She isn’t wrong about those hips.
Tatiana Maslany switched out her fantastic ruffled Roksanda ruffled jumpsuit (stay tuned for Look of the Week) for something a little more comfy post panel and Donnie himself, Kristian Bruun captured the look.
Alison Bennett wrote last week’s episode of You’re the Worst and the end of “Side Bitch” was just as emotionally devastating as the Gretchen’s trip in the middle of night a couple of weeks ago. Luckily for us Paul himself Allan McLeod has a bunch of sweet photos to soften the blow.
Of course the ChumHum office has a slide. Cush Jumbo’s video also indicates that Lucca Quinn will be sticking around, much to our delight and one of The Good Wife’s most challenging clients will be making an appearance.
The Americans won’t be back until the start of 2016, but in the meantime the Russian contingent are sharing some set photos and once again Nina has some fantastic knitwear.
It may not be a Mindy Project behind the scenes picture and yet it still makes the TV Insta cut as this scene made me laugh a whole bunch. And I continue to have Mindy pajama envy.
The returning shows keep on coming and so do the cast reunions on this week’s “Behind the Insta-Scenes.” Plus costume treats galore and other on-set antics.
Petra’s getting pregnant cons list is long and includes maternity clothes, but now I want to see what costume designer Rachel Sage Kunin would stir up in this department. Meanwhile here is a regular costume fitting (this dress is fabulous) and Entertainment Weeklyhas more behind the scenes snaps courtesy of Yael Grobglas.
Game of Thrones costume sneak peeks courtesy of Emilia Clarke. And for a moment I thought Daenerys was going to be rocking a knit beanie this season (not really, but the wig net does look like winter head wear).
More Buffy treats from Sarah Michelle Gellar with this take on National Angel Food Cake Day. Yep that is a day apparently and I like this version better.
Production has started on season 4 of The Americans and Holly Taylor shared this spy like shot of the first table read (she also posted a clearer look at the table read set up on Twitter).
For us The Leftovers has only just started, for the actors they just finished filming the finale. Will we find out the backstory of the wedding dress gardening woman? And how she manages to keep it so clean while doing a task like this.
It kinda looks like Taraji P. Henson and Jussie Smollett are reacting to Gabby’s previous photo. Instead they were watching Empire and this really could be in reference to any number of scenes.
A treasure trove of patterned and colorful garments for Mindy Kaling to try on for a Mindy Project fitting. My eyes are instantly drawn to the starry number.
A post shared by Greg Williams (@gregwilliamsphotography) on
Kicking off with my new favorite Instagram account and the Venice Film Festival has certainly delivered on the red carpet front. It was hard to pick just one shot from Greg Williams because there so many stunning and very fun photos to choose from, so I narrowed it down to a couple when really it could have been WAY more. First up Jake Gyllenhaal’s boat face is a thing of wonder.
Danish Pacey has been the unofficial nickname for Borgen star Pilou Asbæk in plenty of Twitter convos so this post from Joshua Jackson brought squeals of delight (and was all the better as it occurred on my birthday). Now to find a movie/show they can star in as brothers.
A work outfit that I would like in my closet. And Jessica Williams is pulling a real life heart eyes emoji face. [insert own heart eye emoji face here]
More shows have gone back to work and so TV Instagram is brimming with behind the scenes sneak peeks. Plus costume treats, reunions aplenty and some fantastic song/dance numbers.
It is summer TCA time and things kicked off yesterday with a whole host of Netflix panels including The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And this joyous lip sync moment happened on the plane. It’s not Peeno Noir, but it is just as Flawless (I’ll see myself out).
The Mindy Project has found a new home on Hulu for season 4 and here are some of the cast back in action. Beard bonus points are awarded to Jay Duplass.
Surprise friendships on Orange is the New Black played a big part in how much I enjoyed season 3 as it not only created new dynamics, but it also added to the emotional impact. Spirituality was also a big story driver and Soso found it hard to connect with anyone and spiraled; Poussey came to her rescue and hopefully this photo indicates that their friendship continues.
When Empire returns in September it will be interesting to see who falls in what camp and Jamal could be the most conflicted. Digging Cookie in polka dots.
