Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Feb

Black Panther is now out, but this doesn’t mean the cast won’t be gracing “Out of the Box” this week. And yep, there is more awards season shenanigans with the BAFTAs, fashion week, magazine covers, premiere and other sartorially pleasing events. As with the Golden Globes and the Costume Designers Guild Awards—for more on that red carpet head here—the majority of attendees wore black in support of the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements.

Lupita Nyong’o keeps with her dresses that resemble some form of armor theme, this time in Elie Saab. Also with that all important twirl factor.

Before the BAFTAs, Lupita was joined by Danai Gurira in South Africa. These stunning shots could easily be a magazine shoot.

Formal ladysuits are still having a moment on the red carpet much to my delight; Ruth Wilson looks fabulous in Christian Dior. The sandals aren’t the obvious choice, but I think they work. As does that shade of red lipstick. This Zuhair Murad ensemble was probably chosen before the Black Panther press tour, but it is hard not to see the influence here. Naomie Harris looks stunning in this feathered and sheer number—sometimes I like these two things combined—and as with the Golden Globes the pants/dress hybrid is working like a charm. Fashion Week has now hit Milan, at the Gucci show Rowan Blanchard is delivering 1970s reporter with a hot scoop in a green jumpsuit. I love everything about this.Keeping with the ’70s look is Aya Cash at the opening night of her new play Kings. Cash spilled her outfit secrets on Instagram; this orange dress beauty is vintage and the shoes are Forever 21. Pop socks continue to be a thing I want to try out, but I’m not sure I can pull off.At the Game Night premiere, Sharon Horgan wears The Vampire’s Wife and of course I am super into this witchy prairie styling.

Millie Bobby Brown looks like she is going to Spring Formal in polka dot Rodarte and I mean that as a compliment. This frock also reminds me of what Rodarte fave Kirsten Dunst wore for her Nylon cover. At the Brit Awards, Brown holds a white rose as a sign of support for the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns.Atlanta is back next week for season two! I am so ready. At the premiere Lakeith Stanfield, Brian Tyree Henry, Donald Glover and Zazie Beetz are all serving up strong looks. Glover is also keeping with the ’70s inspiration in Salvatore Ferragamo, which is all over this week’s column. And at the after party, Zazie Beetz shows how to go from fancy white halter to casual, in one easy grey sweatshirt step. These are some GQMF at a GQ event celebrating Timothée Chalamet’s cover, including CMBYN co-star Armie Hammer.  A good array of jackets on display.

After weeks of watching Darren Criss giving such an incredible performance on American Crime Story it took a moment to adjust to see him smiling next to a non-Versace looking Edgar Ramirez. Jamie Dornan is also sporting the beard I hope he never shaves off again; in this facial hair contest, Hammer is definitely trailing behind.  On the slightly more casual end of things is man of the hour Timothée Chalamet with Kid Cudi (yes I still miss How To Make It In America) and Black Panther’s Winston Duke. A pop of orange is the way to make a dark suit shine.Jordan Peele got to turn Janelle Monáe into a Hitchcock protagonist for W Magazine and the results are as incredible as this cover is. And ladysuits aplenty! GQ Style teased the Oscar Isaac profile on Monday night; on Tuesday they did not let us down. Not only is this a mesmerizing shoot featuring a whole lot of suits, but the interview goes deep on Isaac’s career, his process, how his mother’s death impacted his relationships and that he was shooting Star Wars and Annihilation at the same time.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

28 Apr

After last week’s color and pattern extravaganza things are slightly more dialed back in this edition of “Out of the Box,” but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Plus there are still plenty of prints on display across various events this week and the Tribeca Film Festival is delivering on a number of sartorial levels.

Between award season faves and new shows getting the promotion treatment there’s a lot to celebrate this week. We also have 2/4 of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants cast, which seemed like something worth pointing out. Viola Davis shut everything down for the second week in a row and on the back of her incredible Time cover she wore this stunning purple Armani gown to the event celebrating this issue/list. Award season has not been over for long, but it is safe to say we’ve been missing the weekly dose of Ruth Negga in these parts. Luckily for us she took a break from filming the second season of Preacher (which I’m really looking forward to) and stopped by the Tiffany & Co 2017 Blue Collection Gala in New York wearing this fabulous Gucci ensemble.

This is ticking so many boxes including a strong collar and all things leopard print. Now entering the Tribeca Film Festival portion of the week and regular readers will know how much I love it when co-stars come out to support each others projects. The Mr. Robot crew seems pretty tight and Rami Malek was joined by his onscreen sister and sorta-BFF at the premiere of his film Buster’s Mal Heart.

They’re also doing a good job on the outfit coordination without being too matchy matchy with Carly Chaikin looking slightly more casual and I am coveting both her clutch and Portia Doubleday’s bag hard.Rami as ever is bringing it with his suit choice and what looks like a classic black take in the first shot is actually hiding the accents stripe down the sleeve; giving it that Rami edge. It is of course Dior Homme and Ilaria Urbinati is the stylist behind this great athleisure adjacent choice. How to do double polka dot by America Ferrera. While moderating a conversation with Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner as part of Tribeca Talks, America Ferrera delivers a great panel outfit and one with a fun 3D texture element. Great chunky silver platforms too. From fantastic shoes to ones I’m going to ignore as the rest of Rose Byrne’s Rag & Bone look is fabulous mixing feminine florals with leather. At the Flower premiere Zoey Deutch goes full Peter Pan collar in this super cute Chloé dress, which is everything I love about the ’70s influence that is still dominating.

I was just scrolling through the new arrivals at Chloé and I am maybe in love with these floral pants. Perhaps because this print is giving me flashbacks to a duvet cover my parents had. Another fun take on leopard print this week with Ruth Wilson in Alessandra Rich, which the belt helpfully points out and also nearly ruins this frock; can we do away with the very Calvin Klein ’90s actual labeling please. Thanks. Alexis Bledel doesn’t make a tonne of red carpet appearances, but when she does she hits all the right notes including this rainbow beaded halter Cushnie et Ochs frock at the premiere for The Handmaid’s Tale. Love, love, love the injection of even more color with the turquoise clutch and yellow sandals.

While I’m on the subject of promotion for the incredible adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale here is a striking cast shot with a guest appearance by author Margaret Atwood via Samira Wiley’s Instagram.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

18 Nov

Awards season has really cranked up a notch and this week we have plenty of frock action for you from the Glamour Women of the Year, The London Evening Standard Theatre Awards, AFI Fest and an Academy event. Plus bonus magazine covers at the end.

So many awards/shindigs geared toward campaigning and this one of the biggest “Out of the Box” columns from the last four years. It also doubles as a list of movies I am excited about seeing. Pattern and bold color are strong throughout, much to my delight.caitriona-balfeCaitriona Balfe looks stunning in a black and white Burberry gown at the London Evening Standard Theatre Award and it really pops in front of the foliage backdrop. Balfe as we have seen on Outlander suits a whole plethora of styles and this one is giving off some 1920s vibes. Great lipstick color too.ruth-wilsonThe Affair returns for season 3 on Sunday for more memory mashing misery and I am looking forward to see where it will go now that the two season long mystery has been revealed. Last week Ruth Wilson rocked a ladysuit for Interview and now it is floral Erdem at the Theatre Awards.

I’m not a huge fan of the shoulder cut out trend that seems to be everywhere at the moment, but with this halter neck aspect it works like a charm on Wilson. Also lipstick highs. ophelia-lovelibondOphelia Lovibond gets a whole lot of stripes in Emilia Wickstead and Dominic Cooper later had fun with this whole mass of dress. Another super bold lip color and I am all for this trend for award season/everyday life. yara-shahidiYara Shahidi makes two appearances this week on “Out of the Box.” First at the Glamour Women of the Year celebration she crushed it in a pattern clashing dream from Cynthia Rowley and Shahidi is very much in the realm of everything she wears turns to gold; a Magical Fashion Unicorn.simone-bilesOlympic gold medal superstar Simone Biles looks incredible in this block blue and black number. Biles was honored at the event for her sensational achievements over the summer.issa-raeInsecure is one of my favorite new shows and Issa Rae gives off great style onscreen and IRL. Here she is at the Glamour Women of the Year 2016 Live Summit in a fabulous black and white Zero + Maria Cornejo dress.gillian-jacobs-and-ahna-oreillyLots of Glamour events this week including this Live Summit breakfast and another black and white dress winner paired with super cute flats from Gillian Jacobs. Ahna O’Reilly ticks all the pleated skirt boxes paired with a “Future is Female” tee and leather jacket. The perfect balance of casual/dressed up for an event at this time.janelle-monaeJanelle Monae is in not one, but two hotly tipped award season movies and I cannot wait to see both Hidden Figures and Moonlight. At the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 8th annual Governors Awards Monae delivered on her usually top notch red carpet attire in Toni Maticevski and I cannot wait to see so much more of her during this very busy award season.

Plus, dress pocket points!greta-gerwigAlso appearing in two contenders this season is Greta Gerwig with Jackie and 20th Century Women. The latter is a spiritual sequel of sorts to Mike Mills’ Beginners and I cannot wait. Wearing Emilia Wickstead and looking fantastic at this Academy event and purple doesn’t get utilized enough on the red carpet. Also if that seam is anything to go by then it looks like we have another bonus pockets number.skai-jacksonYeah you guessed it – La La Land is on my highly anticipated list and at the AFI Fest screening Skai Jackson looks super cute in a textured floral Manoush frock and sparkly Jimmy Choo heels. sally-field-margo-martindale-ruth-neggaThere is something wonderful about this image and all the heart eyes toward Margo Martindale, Ruth Negga (in a sequin stripe delight) and Sally Field at the AFI Fest Indie Contender’s Roundtable. With awards there are roundtables and I couldn’t be happier about these two things right now.

For all things good Margo Martindale stories check out The Americans discussion from a couple of weeks ago.rebecca-hall-and-chris-pineAlso from this event is Rebecca Hall in an ensemble that would be ideal for both a day and an evening event and Chris Pine showing why he keeps getting bumped up the Chris List. Great salt and pepper beard game right now.teen-vogueTeen Vogue has consistently delivered on both good covers and good content this year; the December issue is no exception and Yara Shahidi makes her second appearance on this edition “Look of the Week” along with Rowan Blanchard. This magazine and the work it produces is so important right now and it is encouraging that a publication aimed at a younger audience is striving in this way.wwdNow for Yara Shahidi’s onscreen mother and Tracee Ellis Ross is crushing it in casual chic on the cover of WWD in a super chunky knit, skirt and heels. Such a striking and simple image in an outfit that lives up to the Style Innovator title WWD is bestowing on her.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

11 Nov

Oh this week and I don’t even know where to begin. It is hard to turn back to the frivolity of picking the best outfits, but here I am with distractions from Gilmore Girls, lots of ladysuits, award show sparkle and magazine cover wonders. In two weeks time the new episodes of Gilmore Girls will hit Netflix and with that Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are going to be doing a whole lot of fan events in a variety of countries. Last night they were in Berlin and Bledel’s super sparkly pleated number is the Christmas party outfit I am coveting hard. Graham meanwhile goes classic in a fabulous LBD.

The Gilmore Girls catch up for me is going well and I only have another 12 episodes to watch; even if both season 6 and 7 are a big step down I cannot wait for these new episodes. The last few days have pretty much been a blur of me binging this final season and I’m looking forward to being able to read all those revival articles I have been saving.julianne-mooreThe Hollywood Film Awards is not one to mark on your calendar, but Julianne Moore made sure we paid attention by wearing this stunning Tom Ford sequin dream.naomie-harrisFirst of the ladysuits this week and at the Hollywood Film Awards, Naomie Harris goes glitz in Gucci. Harris is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite as she tends to try a whole lot of different styles on the red carpet and the cropped pants/slightly longer jacket is just that.ruth-wilsonInterview Magazine is crushing it on the fantastic TV profiles and photo shoot front this year and there’s a couple more this week.

First up Ruth Wilson discussing The Affair, which returns later this month for more mashed-up memory misery and for all its stumbles, I’m looking forward to it coming back. Also Wilson is doing the whole menswear inspired look in Calvin Klein Collection and I am here for it.birgitte-hjort-sorensenI’ve been thinking about Borgen a lot this week; part of this is to do with current events and the other is because of the work the three leads have been getting since this show ended. Sidse Babett Knudsen is currently starring in Westworld, Pilou Asbæk will be back as Euron Greyjoy on Game of Thrones and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen had a brief, but memorable part on GoT and was in the one season and done Vinyl. Basically, HBO loves Borgen and I need to do a rewatch.

In Interview, Sørensen talks about the big breaks she has had with Pitch Perfect 2Game of Thrones and Vinyl as well as returning to the stage as she takes on Les Liaisons Dangereuses co-starring Liev Schreiber and Janet McTeer. thrThis cover was released on Wednesday and was pretty much the bright spark in a dismal day; Zendaya is someone I am looking forward to seeing so much more of and while I was pretty unenthusiastic about another Spiderman movie, the cast is something to get excited about.

This is a really dreamy looking cover shot and the accompanying “Next Gen” profiles includes recent faves like The Get Down’s Justice Smith and Shameik Moore, Glenn Powell aka the reason I carried on watching Scream Queens and singer/actress Kiersey Clemons (Transparent season 1).beyonceI almost didn’t include this because it was making me feel so sad, but fuck it; I love this photo of Beyoncé in a polka dot ladysuit and her pantsuit wearing dancers from the Get Out the Vote concert in support of Hillary Clinton in Cleveland last weekend.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Best of 2015 Part 1

24 Dec

We have written about a lot of outfits both on and off screen this year and the 2015 Best Of series turns its attention toward our Look of the Week column, which has featured a whole host of red carpet appearances, magazine covers/editorial styling and many other sartorially infused events. Here is the first part of our “Out of the Box” rundown showcasing our favorites from a very stylish year.

Best Magazine Cover

Taraji P Henson WTaraji P. Henson has appeared on a lot of covers this year and this Diana Ross inspired shoot for W had my jaw on the floor and it is why this issue is still sat on my coffee table. What I love about this image is that it is so simple and yet so incredibly sexy in a way that is so far from Cookie (who is also incredibly sexy).

Best Cape

Ruth WilsonAt the summer TCA CBS, CW and Showtime party Ruth Wilson wore a stunning caped flamingo Valentino frock and had me dreaming of sunshine and sipping on a margarita.

Best Gingham

Lizzy CaplanFor her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Lizzy Caplan not only looked super summer cool in a black and white gingham Lela Rose dress, but she also brought up the WB with fellow guest Jon Hamm. Switching out Birkenstocks for black pumps from the backstage walk to the show also showcases how to dress up/down this outfit.

Most on Point Dress

Kate MaraWhen the movie you are promoting is set in space it might be a tad on the nose to wear a dress this intergalactic, but I say go with it and Kate Mara did just that in this stunning Valentino number.

Best Leather Jacket

Olivia WildeOlivia Wilde has been a regular in these parts for the last few months rocking a variety of styles and this leather jacket over floral Valentino (a brand doing very well in this end of year listicle) gives this an edge over the other outfit faves. Trusty red pumps have been worn on multiple occasions by Wilde and work with everything from 70s inspired to color blocking.

Best Leather Pants

Keri Russell Seth MeyersKeri Russell favors leather in all forms whether skirts, jumpsuits or pants and as her Late Night with Seth Meyers ensemble demonstrates she looks cool as fuck mixing a show tee with heels, black blazer and these leather pants. The pop of lip color gives an extra kick and I am always thankful that makeup artist Tina Turnbow shares what brands she uses (and I was very lucky to be gifted this lipstick earlier this year).

Best Playsuit

Kristen StewartPlaysuits can be hard to pull off, but Kristen Stewart is effortless chic in sequinned Zuhair Murad with legs going for miles. At the time I mentioned how much I enjoyed the fact that she lost the heels and walked most the red carpet barefoot and I still do. A lady after my own heart.

Best Jumpsuit

Rebecca FergusonRebecca Ferguson was a revelation in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and she also stood out at the London Premiere in this stunning DVF Jumpsuit. This was just before I wore my very own DVF dress at my soon to be brother-in-law’s wedding and I was very excited about all of this (as you can tell).

Best LadySuit

Amandla Stenberg#LadySuitWatch2015 has been TV Ate My Wardrobe’s most used hashtag this year and when I saw Amandla Stenberg’s Dazed photoshoot in which she rocks this look I pretty much screamed in delight. Stenberg has been killing it all over social media with her super smart and observant takes on everything from cultural appropriation to how teenagers get discredited for their opinions just because of their age. I can’t wait to see what she does in 2016.

Best Floral Suit

Michael B Jordan VogueThis year has cemented the notion that Michael B. Jordan can wear suits in any color or pattern from Vivienne Westwood plaid to textured D&G at the Met Gala. And he graced the pages of Vogue in another D&G floral suit; this time showing he could work something even bolder.

Best Polka Dots and Stripes

Emma StoneThis is pretty much my platonic ideal of any outfit.

Best Co-Star Pockets, Patterns and Giggles

Maisie and SophieThey haven’t spent any time on screen together since season 1 and photos like this of Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams have me longing for the day the Stark sisters will be reunited and then burn the place to the fucking ground. Thankfully due to all the Game of Thrones press commitments we get plenty of delightful off screen moments like this. Clothing wise Maisie Williams has pledged allegiance to dresses with pockets and Sophie Turner is doing strong patterned work here at the GoT premiere.

Best Sweater – Part 1

Matt BomerThere is nothing not adorable about this Matt Bomer look.

Best Sweater – Part 2

Cobie SmuldersIf there is one sweater I coveted more than any other in 2015 it is this Coach space themed knitwear as worn by many including Cobie Smulders at Sundance.

Best Front Row Watching at NYFW

Natasha Lyonne and Nicki MinajTwo Nickis – one real, one fictional – at the Alexander Wang NYFW runway show back in February and I am always fond of the random groupings at fashion events.

Best Fashion Campaign

Samira WileyA campaign which still makes me gasp all these months later and Samira Wiley is crushing it for Christian Siriano.

Best Lady Hangout

Broad City premiereSquad Goals is one phrase which has been used to an exhausting degree in 2015 (by myself included), but yeah I’m going to have to use it here because this is an ultimate lady hangout situation.

Stay tuned for Part 2 next week and Happy Holidays!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Nov

Oh hey there November! How is it this time of year already? This is the month that gives us one last Hunger Games press tour to play with plenty of fabulous dresses (and some not so wonderful ones – come on Dior you can do it), end of year awards (yes there is still another month of the year) and other fancy pants events.

Samira WileyFirst up Samira Wiley wearing Milly at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards and Wiley continues to crush it on the red carpet; it is easy to see why she is fronting the latest Christian Siriano campaign. This is a simple, but super effective look and this color is great on her.

Karlie KlossAt the same event supermodel Karlie Kloss wears a fun Proenza Schouler Resort 2016 dress and this might sound kinda crazy, but I’m getting Peppermint Patty vibes from this color scheme and it is working.

Elizabeth BanksElizabeth Banks isn’t shy when it comes to embracing fashion and she didn’t disappoint at the Berlin premiere for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 in this stunning Elie Saab Couture gown (for the first Mockingjay premiere last year she also opted for Elie Saab with amazing results). I wouldn’t expect anything less from the woman who plays Effie Trinket and Effie would definitely be into the idea of wearing a gold crown. Pocket plus points awarded.

Natalie Dormer LondonAt the London Mockingjay premiere the following day it was the Game of Thrones ladies who reigned with Natalie Dormer standing out in a custom Ong-Oaj Pairam graphic print dress. Even if it is giving me flashbacks to never being able to see the image in magic eye pictures; my eyes are sadly lacking the magic skill.

Gwendoline ChristieGwendoline Christie is serving up major sparkles in sequin Vivienne Westwood Couture and this is the start of end of year red carpet domination for Christie as there is still the small matter of Star Wars: The Force Awakens to contend with. I cannot wait as she always has so much fun with fashion.

Ruth WilsonHitting LBD territory with a pleated skirt twist at the 2015 Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards is Ruth Wilson in Brandon Maxwell and I am so here for this take on a classic look.

Abigail SpencerI couldn’t choose between what constitutes an ideal outfit from Abigail Spencer and tuxedo delight Abigail Spencer and as this is my column I get to say ‘fuck it’ and pick both. Especially when coats and cute booties are all I am looking at online at the moment. This is at the unveiling of the RH Modern Gallery in LA and everything about this ensemble is perfect casual cool.

Abigail Spencer ladysuitAnd now for something fancier and Abigail Spencer gets added to the growing list of #LadySuitWatch2015 members at the SAG Foundation’s 30th Anniversary Celebration. Adding decadence to this play on menswear with a jacquard jacket and striking crimson red lip color tops this look off.

Talking New Perspectives at The Affair PaleyFest Panel

15 Oct

The Affair is not what you would describe as a light show, but there were plenty of laughs to be had at the PaleyFest New York panel this week. Showrunner Sarah Treem and the cast discussed the new season including how adding Helen and Cole’s points of view has expanded the world of the show by offering up four different takes of the overarching story. The general conceit is touched upon with the idea that there is no one ‘true truth’ being offered up and instead we are now getting four different versions of one affair and its impact.

Plus find out which actor gets the most shit in real life about their character (spoiler alert – it is Dominic West).

PaleyFest The AffairThe new POVs mean we get to move beyond the central love story and Dominic West mentions how in the first season Noah and Alison were falling in love and so generally they were on the same page. With Helen and Cole their feelings toward this relationship come from a place of betrayal and so their versions are in contrast; sometimes wildly so as we saw in the mediation and when Cole returns some of Alison’s things. It is no longer a case of spot the difference with clothes, hair style and tone, but a completely different take on an experience.

These extreme differences worked better for me in the second episode in the Cole/Alison encounter because there was a lot of wish fulfillment from Cole’s view; it was all about reconciling this relationship ending in a cordial manner and accepting that it is over. For Alison, Cole is menacing and a bit of a dick; this justifies her decision to leave. The box (which I’m guessing belonged to their child) is absent in Cole’s story and his day was already pretty bleak without this reminder.

Degrees of favorability come up and how generally the best version of a character is in their own story. This isn’t always the case with Joshua Jackson pointing out Cole’s day involves cocaine, drink driving and an aggressive run in with his brother. He also mentions a random blow job, but this scene didn’t make it into the second episode and this is one of the many jovial moments from the panel. While I don’t need The Affair to become all laughs all the time, it would be good if they could inject a sprinkling of the humor as this is a group of actors who have really great chemistry off screen as well as on. From this panel I know I need some more scenes between Cole and Helen; evidence in the photos below.

The Affair PaleyAnd here’s another because this panel really is delightful (plus I am weak when it comes to Joshua Jackson in a sweater).

The Affair PaleyFest panelThe Affair is a show that I find really interesting and infuriating at times in part because of the narrative structure and the storytelling device. This season is already more in the interesting column over infuriating as a result of the new perspectives and giving Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson more to do. Ruth Wilson also points out that Alison’s sadness has been dialed back a bit this year (“for you guys as much as me”) and while some of the standout scenes dealt with Alison’s all consuming grief, this is a welcome move.

Prior to this discussion the PaleyFest audience have just watched the third episode (airing Sunday 18) so there are a couple of ‘huh?’ moments in what they are referencing, but nothing particularly spoilery. Dominic West discusses the challenges of underwater acting so I will be keeping an eye out on his facial expressions during that scene.

At the end the cast are asked which of the other characters they have previously played would they like to see spend a day in The Affair universe and both Ruth Wilson and Maura Tierney come up with funny answers. But I don’t want to spoil it so just watch the panel here for that and enjoy the rest of this lighthearted affair (I will see myself out).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Aug

Summer TCA continued this week with the Showtime ladies coming out in style. Plus more magazine delights and other various events.

Ruth WilsonRuth Wilson put a bird on it in this fabulous flamingo Valentino caped sleeve mini frock at the CBS, CW and Showtime TCA party. Insert all the heart eye emojis here while I go sip on a margarita and dream of this dress.

Lizzy CaplanOpting for the same Valentino Resort 2016 collection is Lizzy Caplan with those same flamingos appearing in a moodier setting. The skirt looks like a painting and Caplan red carpet styling is always such a revelation. It is a shame either Caplan or Wilson have been nominated for an Emmy this year because they both always bring it whether it is a big or small occasions.

Allison JanneyAllison Janney has been nominated for two Emmys this year (for Mom and Masters of Sex) and she is serving up simple chic vibes at the TCA event where she was also pulling double duty for these two shows. Her arc on Masters of Sex has been quietly devastating for the third year in a row.

Keri Russell TCAThere is a Keri Russell shaped hole in my viewing now that the Felicity watch is over and The Americans won’t be back until the start of next year; I was thrilled to see her at the TCA Awards where The Americans was deservedly being honored (pay attention Emmys). Russell does effortless cool with a twist so well and this beaded kimono inspired Zuhair Murad gown does just that.

Amandla Stenberg#LadySuitWatch2015 alert! Amandla Stenberg covers the new autumn issue of Dazed and I can’t wait to pick up an issue. Stenberg talks about taking teens seriously (continuing the current Dazed trend of talking to smart teens like Maisie Williams and Lorde) saying “I think people discredit teenagers and how wise they can be. Sometimes I meet teenagers who are much wiser than many adults I’ve met, because they haven’t let any insecurities or doubts about themselves get in the way of their thoughts.” Plus she also discusses Tumblr as a social justice platform after her powerful “Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows” video.

Great GerwigMistress America is out today and I am so unbelievably excited for this film and all things Greta Gerwig including this Time Out New York cover.

Aubrey PlazaI need this Ann Taylor* jacket in my life and it will come to the shock of pretty much no one that I have strong positive feelings about an Aubrey Plaza outfit (except those shoes). This is perfect panel attire for a Sundance NEXT FEST event which Plaza co-moderated with Silicon Valley’s Thomas Middleditch.

*Instantly reminded of the Parks episode “Ann’s Decision” where April borrows Leslie’s clothes and says “I don’t know who Ann Taylor is, but I hate her and want to kill her.”

Uzo AdubaEnding the week with Uzo Aduba looking radiant in so much bold color in a knockout Carmen Marc Valvo dress and thankfully there is not a nude pump in sight; opting for these amazing blue Manolo Balinik heels instead.

New Season 2 Key Art and Promos for The Affair Offer up New Persepctives

13 Jul

A couple of weeks ago Showtime released a first look at the new season of The Affair which teased plenty of angst, smooches and a super beardy Joshua Jackson. In that post we discussed the pre-season Emmy interview with Maura Tierney where she mentioned that the number of perspectives would be shifting from the original two with Noah and Alison and expanding to four; adding Cole and Helen to the this narrative device.

At the time I was thrilled by this news and I still am because my main issue with The Affair’s first season was that I didn’t find Noah and Alison’s relationship all that compelling. And it didn’t help when the season finale dipped into the absurd with explosive confrontations and Noah’s arrest.

The new season 2 key art pulls away from the isolated Noah/Alison pairing used for season 1 and physically inserts Cole and Helen into the image as they stare out at us while their exes remain oblivious. The tagline also suggests that just because there are more viewpoints things will not become any clearer. Oh and did I mention Joshua Jackson’s beard? Okay, I did.

Along with the new artwork Showtime has released a couple of new preview videos which hint at a whole host of conflicts born from this affair; families torn apart and the murder Noah has been accused of committing. From these videos alone I’m feeling a lot more hopeful as to the direction season 2 is going in and I’m particularly excited about the prospect of a lot more Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson.

Going behind the scenes on the photo shoot with the four core cast and Ruth Wilson asks “Are we doing Friends or are we doing angry friends?” and now I really want to see them sipping milkshakes together or hanging out by a fountain. Plus there are the usual talking heads reminding us where we left off and what is to come.

Basically I am anticipating this new season way more than I thought I would be after I watched the season 1 finale.

The Affair returns in the fall.

The Affair Season 2 Teaser: “Do You Honestly Think That Things Just Work Out for the Best?”

30 Jun

The Affair is currently shooting its second season and just in time for maybe Emmy nominations – it did win the Golden Globe after all – a teaser for the new season has been released. In it there is plenty of smooching, crying, yelling and some very disheveled looks.

The Affair S2The amount of viewpoints is expanding from two (Alison and Noah) to four (Helen and Cole join the mix) and this is a good thing because at times during the first year I found it hard to find myself too engaged by the central pairing.

My issue isn’t that they are having an affair (it is in the title of the show after all) or that they didn’t have good chemistry, but I just didn’t care all that much for them as a couple. Out of the pair Alison is by far the most compelling as Noah’s story borders on mid-life crisis cliche and it is his scenes with Helen that really hit some incredibly devastating notes.

The Affair S2 ColeBy opening up the different viewpoints it takes some of the attention away from Alison and Noah and will give Helen and Cole more depth. Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson both delivered last season while being on the periphery and I am forever in awe of everything Maura Tierney does as she can sell heartbreak with just a look. Now their characters will hopefully become more than just props in the central love story and we will get to see how they view Alison and Noah.

Memory is a big factor and how it can vary from person to person and it will be interesting to see how Helen and Cole’s version mirror or deviate from the kind of experience we have already witnessed.

The Affair S2 HelenPlaying with perceptions of behavior and costume is one of The Affair’s strengths, which goes beyond spot the difference and reveals a whole lot about these characters and how they see the world. By throwing in two more POVs it will expand this further and this is why I am excited for the new season.

From the teaser you can see that things are going really well for a brief moment, but there is going to be a whole lot of confrontations with the exes, tears in the shower and a really striking blue dress from Helen. Oh and that pesky court related business.

Watch the teaser for season 2 of The Affair, which will return in the fall.

Plus here is the always delightful Maura Tierney discussing the expanding viewpoints and Emmy related thoughts with Goldderby.
