After months of dressing clients for award season it is now time to shine a light on the stylists who make the sartorial magic happen on red carpet with Hollywood Reporters annual celebration issue. Social media like Instagram has already opened up the world of the celebrity stylist to a much wider audience and these are the accounts I turn to throughout the very busy award season. So I am thrilled to see this level of focus from The Hollywood Reporter and it is one of my favorite issues of the year.
Names like Karla Welch and Ilaria Urbinati have appeared numerous times on here and I was thrilled to see both of these women on the cover of THR alongside the actors they have been dressing. Actors who have featured on many TV Ate My Wardrobe ‘Best of’ lists. What I also find incredible (and this is also thanks to access via Instagram) is how many clients they dress for multiple events across a very short amount of time. Oscar weekend would’ve included the Spirit Awards, the Oscars main show and all the parties that followed with many changing dresses between the two.
As you will see from those stylists and actors featured from the list is how many of them have appeared multiple times on these pages over the last year; The Hollywood Reporter picked well. Karla Welch appears alongside Sarah Paulson and Ruth Negga in a shot that makes me think they’re going to solve some crimes in the most stylish way possible. Welch was named number 1 by THR and Negga’s gold dripped Golden Globes Louis Vuitton dress and the stunning green Prada Emmys gown Paulson wore and won her Emmy in are enough to get my vote.
But wait there are so many more amazing red carpet looks from both women and Welch’s other clients such as Busy Philipps, Lorde and America Ferrera.
On that green Prada, Sarah Paulson jokes that “I would like to be buried in it, walk to Gelson’s in it, go to the movies in it.” If there is amazing menswear featured on “Out of the Box” or any ‘Best of’ list then nine times out of ten Ilaria Urbinati will be the woman behind the look. Urbinati is why Rami Malek is always on my anticipated list and she’s also probably the reason he score the Dior Homme contract. Color, pattern and materials such as velvet (see Donald Glover at the Golden Globes) are all up for grabs and Urbinati really knows how to make the guys standout from the usual tux fare.
Looking great in Gucci with Tom Hiddleston (who is always styled impeccably) and I am so glad that Urbinati has made menswear something to get excited about on the red carpet. Regular readers will all know how I feel about Michelle Williams (‘strongly positive’ if there was a box to tick) and I love this shot with Kate Young; that jacket on Young is giving me full heart eyes. Young is also great at the brand campaigns for her clients as THR notes with Louis Vuitton for Williams, Dior for Natalie Portman (and she also delivered on stylish maternity wear) and Selena Gomez scoring Coach. A great stylist can do many things including getting a client a bigger paycheck. Serving up all the drama with Celine Dion and Zendaya as they pose with their stylist Law Roach on a private jet. Everyone looks fabulous and Zendaya is someone who has appeared on these pages a lot. Looking forward to the Spiderman promo tour. Now for a look which has already graced these pages; Naomie Harris with Nola Singer in the patchwork Chanel getting ready to go to the Spirit Awards. One of the great things about Harris is she’s never boring on the red carpet and even when it doesn’t hit the mark there is always a playful element.Viola Davis has been crushing it in color all award season from three-tone blue Jenny Packham at the BAFTAs to her stunning red Armani at the Oscars switching to a fabulous Brandon Maxwell ladysuit for the Vanity Fair party.
The woman behind these sartorial picks is Elizabeth Stewart and the reason for the yellow sequin Michael Kors at the Golden Globes was “to find a dress that represented lightness and strength in dark times. I loved that Viola looked sunny on the carpet.”Rounding things out with the number one and another fabulous shot of Karla Welch with Sarah Paulson and Ruth Negga. Three excellent ways to wear bold lipstick and Dior’s “We Should All Be Feminists” tees.*
*This is a magazine spread of course and I am all here for this A+ message, but I will still raise an eyebrow at how much this T-shirt costs.
Staying up late was worth it for the drama and I am so pleased Moonlight won Best Picture even if it went down that way. This is also why these posts are going up much later because – confession time – my phone was plugged in to charge, but the charger was not and so my alarm didn’t go off. I am much more rested than I would’ve been so hopefully this will be all the better for it.
In terms of Academy Award red carpets this one wasn’t as good in terms of quantity of amazing gowns, but in terms of quality there are some big hitters and here are my favorites.
Head here for the best of the guys in suits.Viola Davis not only gave one of the most powerful speeches of the night when she picked up Best Supporting Actress for Fences, but she is also crushing it in red Armani. This is how you do a nominee (and winner) dress and the overall styling is incredible.
Ruth Negga was a very early arrival and she kicked off the best dressed in a stunning red Valentino. The ACLU ribbon was worn by many at the Oscars and because of the ACLU’s role in the Supreme Court case that features in Loving it makes this more than just a gesture about today’s political climate.
As I mentioned yesterday Negga was on my highly anticipated list as she has crushed award season and this look by stylist Karla Welch is another winner. Love the hairpiece detail and dark lipstick.Velvet has been bang on trend and Taraji P. Henson makes me want to sing a song as this midnight blue Alberta Ferretti is both super sexy and glamorous. Black doesn’t have to be boring and Brie Larson’s Oscar De La Renta shows how you can serve up classic drama with a twist. Great red lipstick too.Great black dresses part two; Kirsten Dunst in Dior and the fact that it has pockets means this dress earns even more points.Bonus Dunst from the Spirit Awards because I didn’t see this yesterday and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity of this adorable newly engaged couple photo.More Armani and Isabelle Huppert is an ethereal delight in another very cool (still trying not to say chic) and this time sparkly choice. Dark red lipstick is one makeup trend I was more than pleased to see on many last night. Janelle Monáe sticks with her signature palette and goes big in an embroidered Elie Saab Couture gown. And she put a bird on it. On Twitter I mentioned that this would not have looked out of place in some of the Paris scenes in Outlander last season and I stick with that. Some dresses were made for moments like these and standing out against this impressive backdrop is Cynthia Erivo in floral Paolo Sebastian.Rounding things up on the gowns front with the best besties and while I was a little underwhelmed by Michelle Williams’ Louis Vuitton number it was different to see her in a plunging gown. Also her hair/face look fantastic. Busy Philipps goes dark green velvet in Elizabeth Kennedy (another Karla Welch choice) and they look great together as always.
Busy Philipps also continues to be the gift that keeps on giving on Instagram with bathroom selfies:
And also real time reactions to the envelope mix up on her Instagram stories. Forever faves.
Welcome to the TV Ate My Wardrobe coverage of the Golden Globes red carpet; there will be three posts covering the best looks of the night in which a whole lot of my favorite trends took center stage.
Let’s get to it!Regular (and probably not so regular) readers will know how much I love a ladysuit and when ladysuit queen Evan Rachel Wood hit the red carpet in custom Altuzarra my jaw dropped. Wood is serving up so much Marlene Dietrich perfection and this is what she said about the tux choice:
“I’ve been to the Globes six times. I’ve worn a dress every time. And I love dresses, I’m not trying to protest dress. But I want to make sure that young girls and women know they aren’t a requirement and that you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. To just be yourself because your worth is more than that.”Also going for a ladysuit is Kathryn Hahn and if I could just put a flames emoji here then I would because this is smoking hot. From one of my favorite red carpet trends to another and Mandy Moore’s going full caped and plunging drama in Naeem Khan. This post could pretty much be an updated rendition of “My Favorite Things” and Viola Davis once again crushed both the dress and speech (twice!) game.Going classic crimson siren in Rodarte and last year’s Best Actress winner Brie Larson also has the red lipstick of my dreams. Now for something different and Caitriona Balfe once again shows that she looks stunning in every kind of frock including this difficult to pull off navy and orange Delpozo.Award season when Michelle Williams is nominated gives us a window into TV Ate My Wardrobe’s fave IRL besties and the Golden Globes/Busy Philipps’ Instagram did not disappoint.
Dress wise and I am so here for everything about Busy’s Stella McCartney florals. Less so with Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton and I would get rid of the ribbon choker (the one major ’90s fashion trend that needs to go away) and cut off the sleeves.Oh, hello.
Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal’s friendship is one for the ages and for the swoons.Stranger Things kids keep on with their dressing better than a lot of their adult counterparts aka the Jacob Tremblay award.
They haven’t shared the Game of Thrones screen since season 1, but Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner thankfully have all this red carpet time together so we can see just how important they are. Including adjusting Maisie’s amazing yellow Ong Oaj Pairam frock and hiding most of Sophie’s sheer nightmare.
Stay tuned for more from the Golden Globes!
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about IRL besties Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps with an appreciation post which has been years in the making. This award season is really delivering on coverage of this friendship and Michelle Williams continues to bring the best date to events like these.
The 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards followed this pattern and because Busy Philipps is such a prolific Instagrammer this means we also get some A+ behind the scenes action including their preferred paired shot (see below) and an Insta story, which will sadly soon disappear. The latter includes the toilet shot, sushi and Michelle Williams re-piercing Philipps’ ear post awards.
They both look great here in two very different takes of the big floral trend of the evening with Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton (of course) and Busy Philipps in a striking red Martha Medeiros gown.
Giving great selfie bathroom pose and they look cool as fuck. Busy’s pink lipstick really pops here too.
But I think this is my favorite shot of them from the red carpet.
In bonus reunion news and this caption is giving me a lot of feelings. Now I want to go rewatch “Kim Kelly is My Friend.”
