Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Jul

Game of Thrones returns this Sunday (July 16) and this week’s “Out of the Box” is dominated by the HBO juggernaut with both the big LA premiere and magazine covers (see also Lena Headey’s stunner for The Edit). It is not just all GoT and there’s more fashion shows, editorials and fun cover shoots. Love is dead for Jon Snow and Ygritte (quite literally), but it is still very much alive IRL for Kit Harington and Rose Leslie on the GoT blue carpet. Plus they’re doing a couples floral theme with Harington adding some flare in jacquard Dolce & Gabbana and Leslie in a dramatic Erdem.

A brief interlude because this collaboration is VERY exciting:

Leslie is also ticking those important pocket boxes and I know that YMMV when it comes to a guy not wearing socks on the red carpet, but it very much goes with Kit’s overall look here. Plus it is summer. And who doesn’t want to wear formal slippers when they can. This is a very fun (and slightly terrifying) Vivienne Westwood frock from Nathalie Emmanuel and she’s got the perfect red lipstick for this look. Love the floral metallic heels too.Keeping with the face theme is Sophie Turner in a sparkly Louis Vuitton Resort mini dress. Turner has been at quite a few LV events recently so expect to see more of her in this brand and this looks great on her. Also getting the shimmer memo is Gwendoline Christie in this ethereal plunging number that is straight out of The Great Gatsby. It is never too early for animal print and Amanda Peet is also bringing the red lipstick power to the GoT blue carpet. This looks very warm for this time of year, but Julianne Moore is working the Calvin Klein duvet as coat vibe at Raf Simons runway show. Contrasting plaid sleeves add to the slightly bananas cool. For a more classic approach there’s Matt Bomer at the Todd Snyder – who he wore to the CFDA Awards – and he’s also gone sockless. As with Kit Harington, it works with this ensemble. Polo shirt perfection. While watching GLOW I tried to work out where I knew Gayle Rankin (Sheila) from and because I am sometimes stubborn I didn’t turn to IMDb to answer this question. Enter Interview Magazine and this fabulous profile of Rankin, which informs me that she is so familiar because I saw her in the recent Cabaret revival back in May 2014.

This profile is less about GLOW and more about her current project as she is playing Ophelia to Oscar Isaac’s Hamlet and because I am pretty basic at times, this is my favorite Shakespeare play. And I love Rankin’s Ophelia interpretation:

“The reason she kills herself is because the world has proven to her that love doesn’t exist. I get that, I understand why she’s like “Well, what’s the point? If love doesn’t exist, what’s the point?”

The shoot is also fantastic with oversized menswear, sweaters and tailored suits with the look above capturing a lot of what I am looking forward to from fall fashion.Absent from the GoT premiere, but crushing it on the cover of the new August issue of Elle is Emilia Clarke. This Dolce & Gabbana frock is giving me strong early ’90s vibes and use of lipstick print works like a charm.

In the excerpt she discusses Daenerys’ “commanding sex scene with Daario” to which she says:

“That’s a scene I’ve been waiting for!’ Because I get a lot of crap for having done nudes scenes and sex scenes. That, in itself, is so antifeminist. Women hating on other women is just the problem. That’s upsetting, so it’s kind of wonderful to have a scene where I was like, ‘There you go!”

I’m gonna have to disagree with Clarke here in that it isn’t about women hating on other women, but objecting to scenes which use “sexposition” (to use a term coined by Myles McNutt). This isn’t to say she hasn’t experienced a level of unnecessary vitriol, but the objections to the amount of nudity in GoT is not antifeminist as it is directed at the creatives rather than the actors. Or at least it should be directed at those behind the camera. Another show returning soon is Broad City (August 23) and Abbi and Ilana are on the cover of the Nylon denim issue. There are a lot of out there denim pieces to enjoy and the interview discusses their partnership as well as the new season. One factor I am looking forward to is Broad City turning from a summer show that airs in winter to a winter show airing in summer. Something I have definitely thought about more than I should.

Part of this change comes as a result of the current political climate and Ilana explains how this will impact the fabric of Broad City:

“We won’t be picking up exactly from November 9. But our timeline will be vaguely current. This season is infused with what they’re feeling—and what we’re feeling—which is something along the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Sometimes it may just be a joke, or something in the background, but we definitely want that feeling to be cohesive across the season.”

The interview also explores their creative evolution and why it is important for them to work on separate projects. While season 3 wasn’t my fave, I am excited to have these ladies and characters back soon.

Thank you, Beyoncé. This was the first image I saw when I clicked on Twitter this morning.

Watch the Full ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ Trailer

18 Jan

Much like Abbi from Broad City whether she is high after dental surgery or looking for the perfect suitcase recommendation I love Drew Barrymore and finding out she was joining the ever growing Netflix series list of actors was a thrill.

Then came the name – Santa Clarita Diet – and it sounded like some kind of Eat, Pray, Love setup. I have never been happier in my first assumptions being wrong and really I should’ve known better as it is from the Better off Ted creator. I have only seen a handful of episodes of Better off Ted several years ago on a plane to New Zealand and always intended on watching the rest of. But I digress.

First the zombie angle was revealed and during the Golden Globes this teaser was released:

And now we have the full trailer and boy does it look full on delightful. Timothy Olyphant is great in these slightly off kilter parts and I’m so glad to see him doing comedy again (plus his hair looks amazing). Also it is makes me want to rewatch Go. The comedy zombie bracket is a crowded one that includes some brilliant takes such as iZombieShaun of the DeadZombieland and the fun Life After Beth and Warm Bodies, but there is still room for more when it looks this fun.

And for those strong Drew Barrymore feelings:

This never gets old.

Santa Clarita Diet debuts Friday, February 3.

Best of TV Costuming 2016: Best of the Rest Part 1

16 Dec

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2016” costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking; we want to celebrate the work of television’s best costume designers.

This week we kicked off our end of year coverage with a deep dive into the Jennifer disguise on The Americans and how it encapsulates the vulnerability that is creeping in.

Today we’re going to switch things up and take a broad look at some of the individual costume standout moments with entries from Game of ThronesPreacherBroad CityGood Girls Revolt and more.

Stay tuned for part 2 next week.img_4802img_4801Most on Point Family Accessorizing

Sansa and Jon Snow did not appear on screen in conversation with each other before season 6 and yet when these two Stark children (cousins not siblings) were reunited the room got very misty all of a sudden. Starks finding each other has been a long time coming as there have been so many near misses over the seasons. To show loyalty Sansa gifted Jon with a fur just like their dad/uncle wore and made herself a fetching new dress complete with wolf sigil. The Starks are back and their little sister/cousin is also hopefully on her way home too.

Okay so things got a little messy with Sansa withholding important information, but in this moment at Castle Black they were at one with each other and their family heritage. For more on this Game of Thrones season 6 moment check out my essay at The Observer.

img_2888The Most Ilana Wexler Use for a Dog Hoodie

I remember seeing this dog hoodie in American Apparel about two weeks before this Broad City season 3 trailer came out and also initially thought it was for an adult (I put the small size down to it being American Apparel). This sight gag was perfect; right down to Ilana thinking the ear holes were for her hair and this sums up Ilana’s carefree (and cropped top loving) attitude toward fashion.

img_4411Best ’90s

The big ’90s fashion resurgence continued with gusto this year and Halt and Catch Fire delivered on a very time specific ensemble that wouldn’t look out of place in a current Topshop display. Ah, the cyclical nature of style.

Also this shot is great as it shows that costume designer Kathryn Morrison linked Cam and Joe together in black and white, but put distance between them as their outfits are the negative image of each other.img_3326 img_3325The Felicity ‘Queen of Sweaters’ Award

There is no doubt that Felicity Porter is the Queen of Sweaters and Keri Russell takes this title once again on The Americans. As this is a winter set show the knitwear levels are high and when I spoke to costume designer Katie Irish she explained that cable knits were one bump concealing solution. And for when the Jennings family go bowling, Elizabeth looks like she borrowed this one straight from Felicity’s closet.img_4617Bringing the Black Turtleneck Drama

Everyone needs a black turtleneck and Queen Judith Light (official title) delivers on the drama in this black turtleneck in front of a black backdrop on this season of Transparent. Yes I would buy tickets to her one-woman show (both IRL and Shelly Pfefferman’s).good-girls-revolt-1-02Cape Most Coveted

I love a cape. I love late ’60s fashion. I love knitwear. It is not surprising then that as soon as I saw Cindy’s green number in the second episode of Good Girls Revolt I wished for knitting skills. Amazon sadly hasn’t renewed this show and I’m hoping it will find a new home elsewhere; it still feels like there is a lot of story to tell and it was only just getting going. Plus I need my fashion fix from this era (especially as Masters of Sex has now also come to an end).tulipSunglasses I Need in My Life: The 2016 Edition

This year I picked up some very Gretchen sunglasses and there is another shades wearer to look to; Tulip from Preacher joined my list of TV style icons and Ruth Negga is also high up on the IRL style icons list after a run of red carpet and Vogue sartorial highs. Part of Tulip’s cool as fuck look is down to her choice of frames and her mix of feminine florals, cropped tops, cute formal wear and edgy leather makes her a costume standout in 2016.img_3965

Teen Bedroom Photo Accuracy

N.B. This is more an interior/production design award, but definitely worthy of a mention here.

There are a couple of reasons this very small moment in Stranger Things stood out to me; in part it is down to the very teen bedroom photo collage thing that always hits those nostalgia points and the other is because they took photos and didn’t just rely on stilted promo shots. There is nothing that takes me out of something quicker than awful photoshop on a picture (see Spectre for a recent offender) or if they have just taken a still from the promotional department; it really doesn’t take long to get results like this. Although I am now wondering why Nancy has two identical sets of the same photo booth shots. Oh hey, Barb those orange framed sunglasses are cute.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

13 Oct

As I have been away for a couple of weeks some of these Instagram highlights are from during that time period.

Now for some behind the scenes of how I choose which pictures I include; while I’m scrolling through I’ll screengrab the ones that catch my eye and because I wasn’t on the internet all that much while on honeymoon/during wedding prep this will be a lighter week, but a fun collection nonetheless featuring a lot of my favorite shows/people.

Next time everything will be back to regular transmission.

Our first proper night in New York was spent in the company of Gil and George (charmed, I’m sure) and as a huge fan of the “too much tuna” sketch on Kroll Show this stage production was everything I hoped it would be and more. Funny and so dark in places, that I was equal parts laughing and picking my jaw up off the floor.

This fun photo collage of the evolution of this sketch is also a delight.

There is still time for some 2016 Emmy coverage and this photo Tom Cullen posted of Tatiana Maslany links nicely into Orphan Black and my desire to get drinks and go dancing with them.

Speaking of Orphan Black and they are back on set for the fifth and final season. Helena is coming to play and this always makes me very happy.

Also it just occurred to me that a lot of shows I hold close to my heart are getting the chance to wrap up on their own terms (see also The AmericansHalt and Catch Fire and The Leftovers). Sure, it is a bummer they will be over soon(ish), but also such a relief they will get a proper ending to their story.

Westeros 2015

A post shared by Carice van Houten (@leavecaricealone) on

Also on this list is Game of Thrones (although it was never in doubt that they would get to choose their end date unlike some of those shows listed above) and this is very fun flashback to 2015 from Carice van Houten.

Two more seasons of The Americans (*sob*) and day one of season five already has me excited for the skirt/boot combination Keri Russell is wearing (even in this is an out of focus shot).

To the woman who creates these Americans costumes surrounded by her work and this photo of costume designer Katie Irish is a stunner.

Today @nbctimeless premiers & I am so grateful to have been a small part of awesome show!! My character was a total transformation into another time period, from sleeping in hair pins, to stylized makeup, some awesome pants called jampers and I loved every moment of it!! It's the best part about what I do, stepping outside myself and becoming someone who is a whole different individual. Bringing her back to life from 1937 allowed me to learn more about the journey of women in this world! My inspiration was Margaret Bourke-White who as a woman had a lot of "firsts" on her resume.. Like being the FIRST FEMALE photographer on staff at LIFE magazine and featured on the cover! Make sure to tune in tonight..: and thanks #timelessteam for letting me be a part of your world!! #lovemyjob #luckygirl

A post shared by Shantel VanSanten (@therealshantel) on

Now for a closer look at the hair, makeup and costuming Shantel VanSanten wore on the Timeless premiere – a show that is tremendous amounts of fun from both a story and costume perspective – and I love the detail in her description here. Also so much lipstick coveting.

Constance Zimmer shared a piece of fan art that celebrates the many characters she has played on TV and it is wonderful.

No hot sauce required.

A couple of style highlights include Lupita Nyong’o on the Queen of Katwe press tour crushing it all over the place.

Followed by Jenny Slate going full vintage in this fabulous casual look.

Ending things this week with a couple of very important things from the Broad City Instagram including the best dog ever (Tom Hiddleston you look okay too).

As a Top 5 Americans disguise it feels right to finish this first “Behind the Insta-Scenes” post after being away with this joyous moment. Abbi and Ilana, I’m sure would agree.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

27 Apr

What is probably going to end up as the musical event of the year took place over the weekend and this week’s Instagram round-up kicks off with this seminal moment. Plus the usual TV season beginnings, endings and everything in-between as there are a whole lot of shows wrapping up and just getting started.

This was a huge weekend for HBO, but rather than dragons it is Beyoncé dominating pop culture conversation after she released her visual tour de force album Lemonade. There is the massive cultural impact as well as the more surface level aspects to pore over like every outfit Beyoncé wears throughout.

Plus plenty of celebrity cameos including TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite Amandla Stenberg and she shared this very cool looking shot.

Zendaya also appeared in Lemonade and instead of a moment from the shoot, here she is enjoying the broadcast of this incredible visual and musical feat.

Lots of shows wrapping up this week with Scandal being one of them and the sight of Angela Bassett is enough to get me to check back in for the finale (although it looks like she might have been there in a non-acting capacity).

There was a lot of wine on The Good Wife this week even by Alicia’s standards and here is fantastic shot of a laughing Julianna Margulies with a glass of red (or most likely grape juice).

Broad City finished its third season last week and here is a very cute photo of Abbi and Ilana from filming the finale.

Those red glasses are very special. I checked back in with The Mindy Project a couple of weeks ago and it will be interesting to see how the rest of this season plays out now they have done that big thing.

Maisie Williams surprised some UCLA students having a Game of Thrones viewing party by joining them for the season 6 premiere. She even brought snacks, but none of them were dragon egg shape.

A couple of things – I love that Margaret Qualley hangs out with Liv Tyler (who I also think could easily play her sister) and this is a reminder that The Leftovers will soon start shooting its third (and final *sob*) season.

Meanwhile, Justin Theroux continues to work on his fabulous hiatus beard.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

22 Apr

It is an all Tribeca Film Festival offering this week and TV got in on the action with panels for shows such as Broad CityThe Good Wife and Mr Robot. As with a lot of these events the outfits range from the fancy end to casual cool, which makes for a very fun and varied “Out of the Box.Abbi Jacobson, Ilana Glazer, Kelly RipaThe Broad City panel took place before the ABC morning TV drama and season 2 guest star Kelly Ripa moderated. Ripa is one of my favorite ever Broad City guest stars and not just because my go to gif about pizza is one featuring her. I am very much in favor of this argument and Ripa in this whole debacle because there are certain words that only ever get used about a woman when she has been fucked over.

Completely unrelated to the behind the scenes stuff going on, but her outfit here is really cute. Abbi and Ilana look funky and panel ready with the option to go out after in this attire. Abbi’s shoes are stacked strappy greatness and Ilana’s hair is giving me curl envy. Good Wife panelThe Good Wife is in farewell tour mode and normally I might be bothered by the presence of such a new cast member, but Cush Jumbo’s Lucca Quinn has been one of this seasons highlights from her funky styling to filling in the much needed Alicia friend position. Plus she gives such great side eye. Here at the Good Wife Tribeca panel Jumbo’s Michael Kors frock is my favorite of the three looks, but Julianna Margulies and Matt Czuchry are also killing it in the panel style stakes. Mr RobotRounding things out on the three co-stars posing together front are Mr Robot’s Christian Slater, Carly Chaikin and Rami Malek. Oh and season 2 has a premiere date; Wednesday, July 13 and you can see them discussing the show here.

At the event Carly Chaikin wore something you might see pop up on Elementary as it is very much in the Joan Watson wheelhouse, which I am very much here for and I would very much like a pair of those Aryn Glasser pants. Malek and Slater are both doing their top button thing and this is one cool looking cast.Gillian JacobsRecent “Out of the Box” columns have been awash with color and print, but this week there are quite a few variations on black classic outfits including Gillian Jacobs at the Dean premiere. The ruffled neckline and detailing makes this more than just a run of the mill black dress.
Viola Davis - CustodyAnd Viola Davis puts a cutout spin on this black fit and flare frock at the Custody premiere. Lots of really great strappy sandals and nail polish combinations this week too and I can finally crack out some color for my toes. SJPOn the effortless end of the scale Sarah Jessica Parker does denim with a pair of SJP ‘Echo’ gold booties, long sleeve grey tee and a brown jacket at the #ActuallySheCan film series event.TOm HiddlestonEnding things on a dapper note and Tom Hiddleston has a lot of projects to promote at the moment and he continues to wear suits very well. Hiddleston is another Ilaria Urbinati client and anyone familiar with TV Ate My Wardrobe and award season will know how much I love Urbinati’s work, particularly on the menswear end as she dresses her dudes in suits of all colors. Here Hiddleston is in a brown Dolce & Gabbana while on the High-Rise trail (a movie in which he wears suits well).

Music Monday – Girls Season 5 Closing Credits Playlist

14 Mar

For any Music Monday regulars you will know already how much I appreciate the variety of end credit music on shows like GirlsYou’re the Worst (which took the Best of 2015 crown) and TogethernessMad Men crushed end credit music selections week in week out and Orange is the New BlackDeutschland 83 and The Leftovers are also strong contenders in this field. With this in mind and for this season Girls instead of producing a playlist at the end of the season I will be adding to the closing credits playlist on weekly basis.

Starting on episode 4 makes it an EP of sorts and one of my favorite things about the music on Girls is that even if the episode has been kinda shitty for the characters there tends to be a hopeful edge to the song choices. The last few moments of “Old Loves” showcases the after of the bad/awkward sex encounters we have just witnessed with Elijah wondering around Dill’s fancy apartment in his underwear and Jessa watches a sleeping Adam before laying her head down on his bare chest. Hannah and Fran are dealing with non-sex related issues this week and this is the most fractured environment.Girls season 5Thankfully we are spared Desi and Marnie post-coital bliss or tears or whatever because if Desi can’t even get his top off properly I’m not sure I want to see that. The song that plays over these moments and the credits is “iT” by Christine and the Queens.Girls season 5There is a whole lot of coming together in “Old Loves” but as the title suggests there is a lot from the past bubbling beneath the surface and like those old celebrity couples has time run its course on a friendship like Hannah and Jessa’s? The argument in the rice pudding place (which I really want to go to because I love rice pudding) would suggest this and perhaps this is Jessa’s way of self sabotaging her friendship because of Adam. And also because Hannah and Jessa have always had this contentious thing that doesn’t quite match up with the best in best friends.

PS I love Old Loves and now I share this with Marnie I’m not entirely sure how I feel because as Abbi pointed out in the Broad City season 3 premiere with Charlotte from SATC – who Marnie clearly is the closest equivalent of* – even if you can identify that way you’re reluctant to admit it as she’s really annoying at times. I also have love/hate feelings towards her silver pants and they are the perfect clothing representation of my relationship with Marnie.

*Updated because it just occurred to me that her apartment/wall situation made me think of Aidan renovating Carrie’s apartment and there is also something Carrie about Marnie. Aidan is no Desi thankfully.

Here is the start of the Girls season 5 closing credits playlist.

Check back every week as the playlist gets longer and becomes album length.

Update! The “Life on Mars” AURORA performed cover of the incredible David Bowie song is not available on Spotify (it is on iTunes) so instead I have opted to switch it out for my favorite non-Bowie version of this song. This one comes from another soundtrack (The Life Aquatic) with Seu Jorge singing this track. The original version also appears on this soundtrack.

Last week’s Instagram round-up included the last of this award season, but there are still plenty of behind the scenes treats this week including excellent guest stars, fabulous outfits and shows starting production for their new seasons.

90s nostalgia continues to dominate and the new Cruel Intentions and subsequent casting has hit me right in the sweet spot. And I can guarantee that now I’ve mentioned this project I will be listening to the soundtrack later today.

That very busy time of year when it is not only New York Fashion Week, but the awards keep on coming and shows are returning/are deep into their filming schedule. It is good for “Behind the Insta-Scenes” as there is plenty of variety this week.

One week! We psyched!

Happy Broad City Day! We are very excited to have Abbi and Ilana back on TV and this picture of a Polaroid is a delight (and means I am no longer questioning the times when I have posted a photo of a Polaroid).

Repost by @sabongui. A little BTS of Earth2!

A post shared by Candice Patton (@candicepatton) on

On Earth-2, Iris has super wide legged pants and I am so here for this futuristic retro look.

Meanwhile Grant Gustin is also moonlighting over on Supergirl; Gustin and Melissa Benoist do look very good together. I really need to catch up on Supergirl before this episode happens.

This episode. Ultimate Valentine’s Day sobs.

Tyra might have a few pointers, but I give this picture a 10 with the added bonus of more Lucca Quinn patterned costuming treats.

Constance Zimmer’s very on point sweater this weekend gets extra points for the Galentine’s tag (and now I’m sad I forgot to include Rachel and Quinn in this post – next year).

There needs to be a word for something that is even more than just #SquadGoals when hangouts like this one take place.

NYFW is all over Instagram including many runway shots and this one from The Cut’s Stella Bugbee captures the fluidity and pretty from the Altuzarra show.

Jill Stuart dress delights – which you will be able to see in full as part of “Out of the Box” – courtesy of Zoe Kazan.

Cats and couture.

A very sweet BAFTA pre-party selfie with Emilia Clarke and Bel Powley.

Now this is an amazing Cookie look – fur, leather, pattern clashing, sunglasses – it has everything. Empire is back in just over a month.

Agent Carter hair secrets – it is all about the curlers.

Seeing double on Jessica Jones.

Super serious morning on the set of #Scandal. 😆

Thankfully there’s a lot more laughter and a lot less animosity behind the scenes on Scandal without all the romantic dramaz.

HOT

A post shared by Sarah Silverman (@sarahkatesilverman) on

I’m just gonna go ahead and assume this is Michael Sheen and also very much agree with Sarah Silverman’s straight to the point caption.

Totally fulfilling the ‘cast mates who are friends when not at work’ sweet spot.

For anyone who has seen the excellent John Mulaney Netflix comedy special The Comeback Kid or if you just like dogs wearing coats – this one is for you.
