Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Apr

How is it April already? A question I gave been asking since Sunday. However, it is finally light jacket temperature and I am thrilled. My winter coats have served me well, but I am ready to wear something else.

On the red carpet and at events this week there is an injection of color with a dash of classic black frocks thrown into the mix (it still isn’t that warm tbh).

Confession – I struggled with the first few episodes of Legion and fell off after episode three. I think it looks incredible and the performances are great, I just felt very disconnected with it all. Maybe I will try again, but TV watching time is already very busy.

At the premiere TV Ate My Wardrobe fave Aubrey Plaza gives great red lip and velvet Vince Camuto. A striking and classic look. Meanwhile, Dan Stevens goes bold in both his suit and footwear choice. Reader, I am enjoying this. Now this is spring florals; Katie Aselton is a pattern clashing delight in Preen with a Clare Vivier bag, which I have fallen in love with. The eye detail is creepy AND charming.

There is a lot to love about Atlanta, but the episodes which have been the highlight for me in both season one and two are Van-centric. Zazie Beetz is incredible and I cannot wait to see her in Deadpool 2. This stripe/zig-zag dress combo is also fantastic.

And here she is on Late Night with Seth Meyers in that fabulous dress talking about her German upbringing (including some things that influenced a recent Atlanta episode).I am also very much looking forward to having the living crap scared out of me when I go to see The Quiet Place. This has been a fun press tour with IRL couple Emily Blunt and John Krasinski.

At the London premiere, Blunt goes super spring in floral tiered Elie Saab and while Krasinski could have maybe been a little less casual, I am a sucker for this look on a dude (especially one with a beard this good).

This is also a very strong look.Leighton Meester has turned an icy shade of blonde and to my great surprise, I am very much here for it. Less surprising is how much I am coveting her airport ensemble.Book-ending this week with black dresses, but adding some spring fever with the floral backdrop at the New York screening of Howard’s End. The costumes in this show are fantastic—so much gingham—and it is always a pleasure to have Hayley Atwell on TV (I miss you, Agent Carter). Atwell is joined by on screen sister Philippa Coulthard and there is definite coordination here; Atwell gets my dress vote, Coulthard wins the shoes.

Best of the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet

4 Mar

Happy Oscars Day! But really this means Happy Day After the Independent Spirit Awards! My official favorite award season red carpet. The reason it is my favorite? Don’t get me wrong I love a fancy gown, but the ensembles at the Spirit Awards are all about having fun with fashion. These are the kind of outfits I would wear, suits have more color and the casual/fancy vibe is infectious.

Plus this is a ceremony where Nick Kroll and John Mulaney are the hosts and Timothée Chalamet wins Best Actor.

And for some Oscar weekend reading, check out my deep dive into the many eggs that feature in the Best Picture nominees for Little White Lies.

As with last year’s Spirit Awards, this was a blisteringly funny opening monologue. This time they called out some of the very bad men of Hollywood including the terrible apologies. And they don’t just limit it to Weinstein and Spacey. Mulaney/Kroll they did not drop the ball on this one and they really should host more award shows.

“Chalamet, you stay.” Especially because he gives the most adorable speech. He makes me believe that things will be okay.

For all the award speeches head here.

To the fashion! *Fires up “Crash Into Me,” starts weeping*

Both Saoirse Ronan and Beanie Feldstein look like ’60s queens. Ronan has a whole Twiggy thing going on in embellished Prada. Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani have consistently been the best dressed couple during award season and the press tour for The Big Sick. This is no different.

Here they demonstrate how you can pattern clash as a couple to the highest sartorial level. I am weak for stripes; Emily’s Whitney Mero dress is hitting all the right spots. Kumail is looking all kinds of Hannibal in ASOS plaid.

This dress also serves up so much photo drama. For their acceptance speech for Best First Screenplay.

Yesterday I found out that Dee Rees has been using BeyoncĂ©’s stylist, this is another fantastic suit choice in a season of fantastic suit choices.

Ladysuits and Capes would be the name of my boutique (I’m sure I can think of something punny, but it is early). Dee Rees and Sarah Broom are high on the list of couple style goals. The lining of Broom’s cape and everything about this outfit is elegant af.

Mudbound won the Robert Altman Award and here is Dee Rees’ speech.Last night, I mentioned on Twitter that Aubrey Plaza always looks great at this award show and this is another dress I am coveting hard. Peter Pan collar and the contrasting sleeves on this Miu Miu frock elevates it. While I don’t love the sheer parts of Elisabeth Olsen’s Zuhair Murad dress, I am thrilled Ingrid Goes West won Best First Feature. If I could have any ladysuit it would be a green velvet ladysuit. Sarah Silverman is living out my dream in Hottie + Lord.Pleats, beautiful green pleats. Allison Williams looks a vision in Andrew Gn.Ava DuVernay is another Independent Spirit Awards repeat style queen. This time in puffed sleeves custom Greta Constantine.Patterned slip dress sexiness for Betty Gabriel in Tadashi Shoji. It’s almost animal print, without being animal print.Leaning into the leopard print trend is Margot Robbie in Louis Vuitton. This is what I mean when I say how much fun can be had on this red carpet.

The Independent Spirit Awards is an event that encourages good suits. A bold suit for Chadwick Boseman isn’t just for the Black Panther press tour; this Burberry polka dot look is incredible. And we’re in luck as Boseman has posted a lot of good photos to his Instagram, also featuring Black Panther co-stars Danai Gurira and Daniel Kaluuya. Get Out won Best Feature, Jordan Peele won Best Director. Peele also won Best Jacket in red double-breasted Calvin Klein. Patterned button-down shirts feature a lot on the new series of Queer Eye; the Fab Five would definitely be into everything Mike Colter is doing here. The turtleneck/suit jacket combo is winner, the sneakers work at this event and my Jay Ellis swoon levels are high.I’m still not quite over how terrifying Barry Keoghan is in The Killing of a Secret Deer, but this is adorable.Feeeeeeeeelings. So many CJ and Josh feeeeeeeeelings.A photo of a photo being taken and I love everything about this. Also Allison Janney looks flaming hot in hot pink Pamella Roland.Be still my Lady Bird loving heart. Why yes I am watching this again today.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

26 Jan

Coats, boots and sweaters are all on the “Look of the Week” menu and Sundance taking place during award season is my fave kind of style whiplash. It is also a sartorial highlight for me because I cannot resist that slouchy (but often super cool) winter fashion. For all things fancy and fun gowns check out our SAG Awards coverage.

Plus Paris Couture Week, public appearances to promote things and some more amazing magazine covers. January, you keep on treating us (and keeping me very busy).Obsessed with Tessa Thompson’s Belstaff skirt and jacket, Cos turtleneck and silver Alchimia di Ballin silver ankle boots. Sorry to Bother You co-stars Lakeith Stanfield and Armie Hammer are also crushing their respective Sundance looks.

A post shared by Armie Hammer (@armiehammer) on

Armie has had a very busy week. Sadly there was no Oscar nomination (though I am more bummed out for Michael Stuhlbarg), but he has been promoting Call Me By Your Name in Italy in Paris with co-star Timothée Chalamet and director Luca Guadagnino. Lots of great Instagram Stories content. Traveling in double Adidas style.

And there is also this delightful interview on French talk show Quotidien. Bringing many screencap delights to my Twitter TL this morning. There’s no English subs on the second part (so far), but it is worth watching even if you can’t understand everything. Zineb Bayad recreated scenes from CMBYN with photos and she is in the audience, ending up in a Hammer/Chalamet sandwich hug. Back to the fabulous coats and boots of Sundance with Steven Yeun, also starring in Sorry to Bother You. I am very excited to see his post-Walking Dead career. A stunning Gabriela Hearst leopard print coat on Elizabeth Gillies; I wouldn’t expect anything less from someone that has been wearing all manner of extravagant costuming on Dynasty over the last few months. Sensible boots and fabulous coats are not mutually exclusive. Got to love a fancy hat too. Gillies’ Arizona co-star Rosemarie DeWitt also got the leopard print memo, much to my delight. I too have indulged in this pattern this week, hopefully the cardigan I have ordered from Topshop arrives tomorrow while I was writing this I got a text to say it has arrived. A day early! Check my Instagram for pictures when it does.Super excited for the 2 Dope Queens HBO specials and the promotion of this has also got me hyped. Great ’70s inspired looks from Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams. Issa Rae gives good Sundance sweater. At the A Boy, A Girl, A Dream premiere, Insecure’s Jay Ellis looks just as stylish as Lawrence. Looks like camo print is making a bit of a comeback. As also seen on Priyanka Chopra at the Burden the Park premiere. A fun mix of smart/casual that makes me glad that I am a hat and red lipstick person.

For something slightly more glam; Maggie Gyllenhaal in one of my brand faves with another Vampire’s Wife dress that I want in my closet. And a dash of ladysuit fabulousness from Aubrey Plaza in pink Rebecca Minkoff at “An Evening with Beverly Luff Lin.” A #TimesUp red beanie to promote the movement and because keeping your head warm is important (my mother drilled this into me, which might also be why I am a hat person).  Double Aubrey Plaza because I like this dress and Michael Shannon has paid attention to my mother, it would seem. From Utah to Paris; at the Berluti Menswear F/W 2018 show Isabelle Huppert continues to exude everything cool and TimothĂ©e Chalmet dips his toe back in the velvet suit well. While promoting Waco, Taylor Kitsch bundles up in a leather jacket and scarf combo refueling the crush that has never really gone away.Sequins are everywhere at the moment and I am very much on board with this trend. At Jimmy Kimmel Live! Viola Davis leans into this with a pair of gold sequined pants; everything about this look is fantastic.

On the show Davis also discussed the Scandal/HTGAWM crossover. Those sequined pants also look great on screen.Black Panther is less than a month away, which means we’re going to be seeing a lot more of this cast. I am excited about all of this. Lupita scores another stunner of a cover and the accompanying Hollywood Reporter shoot is just as beautiful.

In the interview she talks about the piece she wrote for The New York Times about her own horrifying experience with Harvey Weinstein:

“I felt uncomfortable in my silence, and I wanted to liberate myself from it and contribute to the discussion. That was just what I felt I needed to do, quite viscerally. I couldn’t sleep. I needed to get it out.”

Earlier this week I spoke to costume design icon Ruth E. Carter about the Black Panther costumes and I cannot wait to share what we talked about. Look out for that nearer the release of the film.  A VERY good week for magazine covers. This is also sparkly gown perfection.

Celebrating the 75th Golden Globes with Bold Print and Color

16 Nov

It is mid-November and Golden Globe nominations are just around the corner—they will be announced Monday, 11 December—and as it is the 75th anniversary of these awards, there is of course a party.

And many of the people vying for nominations attended, because of course. A lot of them also happened to give some of the best performances of the year. Big trends of the night include bold prints and color, much to my delight. There are several late entries into the best profiles of 2017 category and Kyle Buchanan’s Vulture interview with Armie Hammer is so good that it warrants its own outtakes article. I saw Call Me by Your Name twice in the space of a week and I am still thinking about it.

Also incredible is his choice of Paul Smith suit and floral T-shirt; this event is casual enough to eschew a collar and I love this fun red carpet take. Another Ilaria Urbinati winner.Alison Brie’s Instagram is a gift for any GLOW fan right now. There are so many good BTS moments from the set, particularly with her hair. Here she has scraped it back and gone with minimal makeup, which makes sense when you’re wearing a Hugo Boss green leopard print velvet dress.  Keeping with the Community cast theme and everything about this Yvette Nicole Brown frock is perfect winter florals. Also going with a botanical print and Tatiana Maslany mixes masculine and feminine styling with aplomb. There is a reason she is a style icon around these parts.Alias Grace is one of the best shows I have seen this year and star Sarah Gadon is a revelation. Gadon is currently doing the talk show circuit (where she is charming as hell) and hopefully she will get some awards love.

And she looks pretty fabulous in Giambattista Valli at this Golden Globes celebration. On and off screen, Yvonne Orji crushes it in the sartorial stakes. An appropriately festive dress by Phuong My and a dramatic bow that doesn’t swamp her.Insecure creator/star Issa Rae goes in a different direction to her co-star and this block color Brandon Maxwell halter neck dress is making me want an afternoon cocktail. Cute without being too saccharine is Saoirse Ronan in a girlish Teresa Helbig frock and I am still desperate to see Lady Bird.13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford in lipstick print Valentino Resort is giving off super fun vibes, but would it have been too on the nose for Langford to wear lipstick as well?I would be thrilled if Tara Lynne Barr got recognized for her performance on Casual (I still think about the stripped down rendition of “Landslide”) and season 3 of this show is probably my favorite so far.

Barr also gives great party frock and colorful pumps; I would like all of this in my own wardrobe.Director Dee Rees continues to wear some of the best jackets on the red carpet and I cannot wait to see Mudbound (which arrives on Netflix tomorrow).Jessica McNamee ticks three of my favorite style boxes; the ladysuit, heritage prints and a bold lip color. More ladysuit treats from Zoe Lister-Jones in Dion Lee and I am also a sucker for the stripe long-sleeve tee with a suit thing, which Adam Scott is doing so well.More Valentino Resort and a very different look for Aubrey Plaza as she dips her two in the Little House on the Prairie pool. It looks pretty damn good.Block color and kooky shoes for another TV Ate My Wardrobe fave. Julia Garner has had a very good year and I am already excited to see what she does in 2018. Namely the Waco miniseries and how much Kimmy will be in the final season of The Americans. I should probably also watch Ozark.Oh, hello. Turtleneck with a suit achievement unlocked and I am now currently casting Sebastian Stan in my as yet unwritten 1970s set movie. It is going to be a doozy.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

28 Jul

Comic-Con is done for another year, but it sure did deliver sartorially. Particularly in the area of a personal fave of mine; the ladysuit. Well, we have more menswear inspired tailoring from both premieres and photoshoots.

Plus Summer TCA is here, which means more panel attire. Ladysuit meets Cersei Lannister embellishments for Cara Delevingne, wearing custom Burberry at the London Valerian and The City Of A Thousand Planets premiere. Digging the pixie cut/headband combo and this is a great look for this movie. Seeing double Marc Jacobs at the Ingrid Goes West premiere and a coordinated Aubrey Plaza and Elisabeth Olsen. Love the playful twist with the almost-matching dresses – gold for Plaza, silver for Olsen – and how this nods to the plot of the movie they are promoting. One of the new shows I am most anticipating is David Simon’s The Deuce – because Maggie Gyllenhaal and those costumes – and at the HBO summer TCA session Gyllenhaal brought her lipstick and windowpane check jumpsuit A game. Also at the HBO session, Sonja Sohn discussed Baltimore Rising, the new documentary she directed; detailing the manner in which the media sensationalized the protests that took place after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody. Sohn is probably best known for her role in The Wire as Kima Greggs and on Sohn making this documentary, Wire creator David Simon said ““She’s come to love the city as if she was born there and she has documented something that’s very important.”

On reasons for making this documentary and why it is so important Sohn explained:

“The people of Baltimore are actually engaging in a much more sophisticated conversation than I was hearing or at least that the media was covering in other cities. So at that point, it was simply my love for the community, my love for justice and my mission… and I feel like my purpose is to make the world a better place and to fight for justice and truth and freedom.”

I’m currently catching up on Luke Cage and while it is only a fraction of the show, I’m really enjoying the interplay between Sohn’s Captain Betty Audrey and Simone Missick’s Misty Knight. At the panel Sohn’s got the ideal Summer TCA frock; a colorful maxi dress and sandals.September is always a busy TV month and Broad City is joining the fall TV fray with season 4 premiering Wednesday, September 13. At their TCA panel Abbi and Ilana discussed how the current political climate has impacted the show with Ilana explaining:

“It’s not just casual, and if you’re going to talk about it, you have to clearly state your beliefs and where you stand ethically or politically. So our message is heightened and crystallized this year after our hiatus.”

In terms of panel outfits these are both ensembles I would very much like in my closet. At the TNT panel for Claws on Thursday, Nasim Pedrad shows that you can never go wrong with a floral dress at one of these things.Bookending “Out of the Box” with ladysuits brings me so much joy, as does the new season of Insecure. The Cut’s profile of Yvonne Orji delivers on the photo and interview front and Allison P. Davis gives great insight into what the vibe of the Insecure set is like.

They discuss Orji’s stand-up career, religion and she points to something important about her character on Insecure, “Molly is not perfect and we allow her to be not perfect.” I’m really looking forward to seeing where things are headed for Molly and for a good look at the costume upgrades in season 2 head here.

Best of the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet

26 Feb

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are the soothing beachside afternoon jaunt we all need before the hustle and bustle of the Oscars; this is always one of my favorite red carpets of the year.

The outfits tend to be a little more on the chilled out and playful side with both pattern and color out in strong force and while I love the dramatic glamour of the Oscars this is much more my speed. Plus the dudes in suits tend to step out of the usual classic comfort zone and this year is no different.

And you get an incredible opening monologue like this one:

It’s strange seeing John Mulaney and Nick Kroll out of their Gil and George costumes after so many months of Oh, Hello.

Now for the best looks of the afternoon.janelle-monaeJanelle MonĂĄe gives another lesson in how to wear black and white on every red carpet and keep things interesting. This time it is Salvatore Ferragamo and I’m digging those coat slung over the shoulders vibes. Great lipstick as per and as I said on Friday, MonĂĄe is one my Oscar most anticipated.ruth-negga-and-colin-firthAnother person who has been a big awards sartorial presence is Ruth Negga and she is also very much on the anticipated list.

Accompanied by super handsome Loving producer Colin Firth going for the no tie/open button option and Negga is stunning in dramatic floral Delpozo.ava-duvernayFlying in from filming A Wrinkle in Time in New Zealand (as well documented on Instagram by Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon) is Ava DuVernay and this patterned Gucci number ticks so many boxes; pleats, botanicals, fabulous collar.naomie-harrisMulticolor patchwork Chanel for Naomie Harris and I love everything about this look except for the random bit of lace that looks like someone accidentally forgot to cut it off. Don’t be the Topshop school of somehow adding lace or tulle to things that don’t need them.taraji-p-hensonMullet dresses are very much hit or miss for me and Taraji P. Henson’s ethereal Giambattista Valli happily falls into the first category. The slightly windy conditions add some drama and those gold Jimmy Choo sandals are fabulous.nasim-pedradEntering mini dress territory with Nasim Pedrad in textured green florals.aubrey-plazaAubrey Plaza is a regular on this Spirit Awards rundown and the best thing about this is she takes a very different approach each time. Here she has taken a page out of the Janelle MonĂĄe clashing black and white patterns book in a somewhat ’60s trippy Versus Versace top and skirt. Bonus lipstick points too.isabelle-huppertLooking cool as ever – this time in ChloĂ© – and with the award for best actress to boot is Isabelle Huppert and I wonder if she will repeat this win tonight against Emma Stone.jon-hamm-edgar-ramirez-and-jenny-slateJenny Slate is in a handsome men in suits sandwich with Jon Hamm and Edgar Ramirez. Love her choice of Luisa Beccaria pleats and halter for this seaside venue. mahershala-aliNew dad Mahershala Ali continued his fabulous suit streak and the best thing about this is the red shoes he paired it with.

And I am finally seeing Moonlight this afternoon and this has been a very good movie watching weekend. trevante-rhodesKeeping the suave Moonlight cast score high is Trevante Rhodes in a double-breasted grey number paired with oxblood shoes.jaden-piner-and-alex-r-hibbertMore Moonlight and bonus delightful kids alert as Jaden Piner leans casual whereas Alex R. Hibbert does the tuxedo thing (but keeps things chill in white Vans).aldis-hodgeMy favorite suit of the day and Hidden Figures’ Aldis Hodge is giving great mixed patterns. The pocket square/pin/tie details give this three piece suit ensemble the edge over everyone else.viggoI saw rumblings on Twitter the other day that there might be a Casey Affleck upset tonight and that Viggo might be the reason. Regardless of whether he does win the Oscar, he looks great here in burgundy.david-oyelowoDavid Oyelowo had one of my favorite looks at the 2015 Spirit Awards in a knockout blue suit and this year he’s gone for something a little more subdued, but still just as stylish and his tie delivers a splash of color.nick-kroll-and-john-mulaneyAs I mentioned above it is going to take a little bit of time getting used to John Mulaney and Nick Kroll out of their Gil and George costumes/makeup. This is a good start and along with a hilarious and blistering monologue they both look fabulous.annette-beningEnding things on a super smiley Annette Bening looking cool as fuck in a black turtleneck. I saw 20th Century Women yesterday and it was everything I hoped it would be and more. This post has been written to Talking Heads because of this movie.

Come back tomorrow for plenty more red carpet posts.

Coats, Cardigans, Boots and Knitwear from Sundance 2017

23 Jan

This time of year is great for someone who writes about red carpet fashion because a) there is so much and b) it is quite varied. There’s the glamour of award season, panel fashion at TCA and then there’s the Sundance Film Festival. TCA and Sundance are the closest to my personal style as many of the outfits worn are things I could see in my own closet; well I’d probably have a cheaper version.

Sundance also happens to take place in a location where it is cold and this also mirrors my current local as I’m pretty much head to toe in knits right now. It also feels very different to award season and at Sundance the clothes while most likely carefully chosen have a more carefree thrown together vibe and also consist of the most amazing coats. An instant win for me.

So here is the best of Sundance so far. Expect more later in the week.jessica-williams-and-noel-wellsAt the IMDb studio while promoting The Incredible Jessica James, TV Ate My Wardrobe faves Jessica Williams and Noël Wells give great boots, patterns and beanies. An early indication of what you can expect from this style post.

On Saturday as Women’s Marches were held in the U.S. and across the world Jessica Williams gave a powerful speech at Sundance telling the crowd “I grew up thinking that the civil rights movement already happened, that we already fought. But this election was a wakeup call
We have to fight, and we cannot slack.” aubrey-plazaNow for the long coats portion and outerwear is truly my clothing weakness.

Also this is an instant way to spruce up a pretty standard outfit as demonstrated by Aubrey Plaza at the Iris Goes West premiere.jenny-slateJenny Slate goes super classic at the Landline premiere with her outerwear choice, which thankfully distracts from denim fringe. carey-mulliganMuch to my delight Carey Mulligan is back with the very well received Mudbound. Here she is giving great coat, sweater and lipstick (also to my delight).rooney-maraRooney Mara’s nearly floor skimming olive green number has a bit of a military vibe and pairing it with an all-black look at the premiere of A Ghost Story works like a Rooney Mara charm. As does her slightly severe dark brows and lip color choice.cynthy-wuMy strong cape feelings are well documented on this site and the one I have in my own closet was bought after I broke my wrist and my cast covered arm wouldn’t fit in my winter coat sleeve. Best purchase. Cynthy Wu’s ChloĂ© cape take on the Before I Fall red carpet is very cute and classic paired with a white sweater and black jeans.alison-brie-and-dave-francoAlison Brie’s sporting a fabulous shorter hair style at the IMDb studio while promoting The Little Hours and the dungarees/sweater is pretty much a staple go to casual look for me right now. And fiance Dave Franco wears a T-Rex sweater from the Coach collection I have been coveting for a long, long time. alison-brieAlso while promoting The Little Hours both Alison Brie and Kate Micucci deliver on my other favorite trend; sweaters with stripes. Micucci’s super colorful number is particularly delightful.emily-browningIt is not all coats, knits and boots and as Emily Browning shows at the Golden Exits premiere in a patterned dress which is an ideal day/night look.chloe-sevingyAlso at the same premiere is ChloĂ« Sevigny in a print that wouldn’t look out of place in that one season (*sob*) of Good Girls Revolt paired with shoes that look like the ones I wore to high school in the mid ’90s. Also black tights forever.jon-hammHot dudes in chunky cardigans; the Jon Hamm edition.nick-offermanClosing with Nick Offerman in a knitted pink pussy hat. He wears it well.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Part 2

30 Dec

Rounding off the Best of 2016 series with Part 2 of our favorite “Out of the Box” moments. Last week we dedicated the first part to the magazine covers that stood out and now it is time for style highs from red carpets, events, awards and panels.

The only rule was they had to appear as part of “Out of the Box” and we’ve got a good mix of casual, fancy and everything in-between.Evan Rachel WoodBest LadySuitWatch2016

So many fantastic Evan Rachel Wood ladysuit moments in 2016 and it was super hard to pick a winner. This red one is incredible, but the collar, lipstick and metallic pumps from back in June take the prize.Yara Shahidi

Tracee Ellis RossBest Sequins: TV Mother/Daughter Edition

Yara Shahidi is not only 2016’s best dressed teen, but an overall style icon for the year. This super sparkly sequin Tracy Reese dress that she wore to the BET Awards gives me so much joy as does Tracee Ellis Ross at PaleyFest in March.julianne-mooreBest Sequins – Awards Edition

Continuing the sequin love and we’ve got the whole year covered as this was pretty recent; Julianne Moore in Tom Ford to celebrate Tom Ford at one of the many film award season events. Alicia VikanderBest Post-Oscar Party

It is not just the Oscar that makes Alicia Vikander’s post-Oscar Louis Vuitton much better than the yellow Beauty and the Beast style gown she wore to the actual ceremony. Everything about this is incredible and just because it is black it is far from boring; so many fantastic sequins in 2016.Brie LarsonBest Pattern – Eyes

First up Jacob Tremblay is 2016’s best dressed kid and he also outdid a lot of his older male counterparts. At the pre-Oscar photocall his tie matches his onscreen mom Brie Larson’s super fun Emilia Wickstead skirt and blouse. An instant standout style moment that brings much needed whimsy. Mary Elizabeth WinsteadBest Pattern – Lips

Mary Elizabeth Winstead was not only one of the best dressed characters on TV this year, but she also brought it on the red carpet. This Victoria Beckham red lip patterned dress is very high on my covet list.Kirsten DunstBest Cannes

Serving on the jury at Cannes this year meant so many amazing Kirsten Dunst ensembles from the fancy to casual chic; it is this yellow Dior daytime perfection with an A+ red lipstick that was my favorite. Lupita Nyong'oBest Pattern Clashing

Pleats tend to make me want to twirl and Lupita Nyongo’s colorful Prada frock at the Obie Awards is giving me those feelings. It could look like a lot against the equally bold floral backdrop and yet Nyong’o is totally pulling this off.Aubrey PlazaTatiana Maslany ColbertBest Talk Show Entrance

Aubrey Plaza is a forever style icon and has featured in these end of year lists in the past. First she started my pleated leather skirt obsession and in June 2016 she arrived at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in pretty much my dream casual outfit. Tatiana Maslany on the other hand is doing the sneakers with heels in her hand thing while also arriving at The Late Show and she is another casual dress queen. caitriona-balfeBest Black and White

Everything about Caitriona Balfe’s Burberry gown is a dream at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards showing that she looks fantastic in any era. I’m excited to see what she will wear to the Golden Globes in a couple of weeks.mads-mikkelsenBest Hannibal

Mads Mikkelsen looks really great in a suit and this is the first Best of year without any Hannibal. Thankfully at the Doctor Strange premiere Mads is wearing a suit that wouldn’t look out of place on the famous cannibal he plays. matthew-rhys-and-keri-russell-operaBest Cape

Serving up so much drama at the Met Opera in September and Keri Russell has worn Stephane Rolland for three very dressy events this year – the other two being at the White House and Emmys – and this black caped number is my overall favorite. A very fancy date night with Matthew Rhys. constance-zimmer-and-shiri-applebyBest Friends

Thankfully things are a lot better IRL between Constance Zimmer and Shiri Appleby than their UnREAL counterparts and while season 2 was super messy/missed the mark in places, the subsequent promo tour and red carpet appearances always delivered.

This is from the Elle Women in Hollywood celebration at the end of October; they are giving off metallic dress and flaming hot jumpsuit excellence.Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne, Elisabeth Olsen, Michael B. JordanBest Sunglasses

As the Fug Girls like to say “Everybody looks hotter in sunglasses” and the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic helps prove this theory. Summer wardrobe delights from Elizabeth Olsen, Michael B. Jordan, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale.TCA You're the WorstBest TCA

Panel outfits are an “Out of the Box” fave as they tend to deliver on the casual cool. With Aya Cash she also delivers on great lipstick and she also let me know what brand and color (Inglot 13). I picked it up while on honeymoon and it is fantastic. Thanks, Aya!2 Dope QueensBest Crown

To my favorite podcast of the year and two women that made 2016 a whole lot better (including the time they were there for me when I traveled home on the train after my dad died in July). This fabulous shot of Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson from The New York Times puts the crown in 2 Dope Queens.Sarah Paulson and Sterling K BrownBest Look of the Week

I said this at the time and I’ll say it again, but the way Sarah Paulson is looking at Sterling K. Brown is how I would look at Sterling K. Brown. Marcia and Chris 4EVA.

All eyes are on Belfast to see which Game of Thrones cast members are heading to Northern Ireland for season 7 and while this bar hang is not a guarantee that Sansa and Arya will reunite any time soon, I can but dream. I am also here for Maisie William’s double drink choice of a cocktail and what looks like a hot beverage.

The month of everything happening continues with the Toronto Film Festival and Hidden Figures is on my most anticipated list (see also La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, Colossal and Jackie). Glen Powell is pretty much the main reason I stuck with Scream Queens and he’s got the best co-star hangouts at TIFF.

Top notch prom posing skills.

Also at TIFF is Uzo Aduba and this is an incredible pre-premiere shot.

So happy that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend won a couple of Emmys over the weekend. Expect a lot more Emmy Insta next week.

I’m still confident in saying that BrainDead was my favorite show of the summer and while I am sad it is probably done, the finale kept up the absurd/fun/weird/sexy/amazing costume levels.

Is Liv getting a zombie dog? This is a serious cutie.

Masters of Sex returned this week with a promising start to the season after last year’s messiness. Niecy Nash was a welcome presence and she won’t put up with Bill’s self-pity.

The boots and jeans look works well on Joshua Jackson so thank you, Affair costume department.

Time for the weekly installment of I heart the You’re the Worst team; at work on a Saturday.

And then followed by spending the evening together.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

6 Jul

The holiday weekend means plenty of patriotic style and a whole lot of sunshine. Plus the Orange is the New Black cast head to Canada, some exits and anticipated returning shows from the Instagram TV highlights.

Jessica Williams has left The Daily Show and I am so excited for what she will do next. Williams’ podcast 2 Dope Queens with Phoebe Robinson got me through an emotionally tough train ride home at the end of last week; making me laugh when all I wanted to do was cry so I am extra grateful for that. Plus this photo from the Jon Stewart era is amazing.

Makeup artist Tina Turnbow captured Keri Russell getting ready for her Today Show appearance where she wore a very cool floral pussy bow blouse and talked her new movie, The Americans and Spy Baby.

Thank you, #TorontoPride.

Last week the OITNB cast celebrated New York Pride and now they have ventured up to Toronto for the Pride parade that took place on Sunday (July 3). Samira Wiley has another really fantastic custom Milly top that I am coveting hard.

More OITNB Toronto Pride partying.

Keeping on the OITNB track here is a season 4 behind the scenes shot and this one is giving me all the feelings.

Making a splash!

By now you have probably seen many photos from the annual Taylor Swift Fourth of July Squad weekend and I’m going to keep on the OITNB theme with this one of Uzo Aduba. Yes that water slide does look amazing. Yes I love this Vulture post on the whole thing which harks back to their amazing Gossip Girl recaps.

For all your July 4th patriotic clothing needs look no further than the amazing Dick from 1999 starring Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams. This was my dream teen lady pairing and I heart this movie hard.

Jaws in a pool

A post shared by Aya Cash (@maybeayacash) on

Jaws is the ultimate Forth of July movie (sorry Independence Day) and Aya Cash’s photo of this very on point tat is very cool.

More UnREAL off camera joy and Jeffery Bowyer-Chapman and Denée Chapman are enjoying a very crowded looking Brooklyn park while celebrating the holiday weekend.

More from the UnREAL cast and I love how much Constance Zimmer loves this bag of popcorn.

If you miss The Office well then Angela Kinsey has a treat for you as she has posted a bunch of old photos from the set including that time in season 1 when Amy Adams guest starred.

Very cute iZombie co-star hangouts with some bonus dog pals.

I am very excited about this and in non shocking news Aubrey Plaza is wearing a dress which is giving me full heart eyes.

Mr Robot returns a week today (!) and I hope we get to see a lot more of all three ladies in season 2. Please and thank you.
