Happy Golden Globes Day! This is set to be a very different kind of awards as it is the first big film/TV awards ceremony to take place since the Harvey Weinstein allegations first came to light at the start of October. What has followed has been a reckoning in this industry, but this isn’t just a Hollywood problem.
Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks, aka The Fug Girls, spoke to Constance Grady from Voxto discuss what we can expect to see tonight, why you can care about fashion and still be a feminist (I hate that we even have to justify this, but of course we do) and the movement—with #MeToo and #TimesUp—that is taking place.
I will be covering the Golden Globes red carpet tomorrow, but will be mindful of the bigger conversation that is taking place. Racked tried to get comments from any/all stylists about what they planned on doing with their clients outfits and they didn’t get a single reply. Playing it close to their chests in case anything changes late in the day.
Before tonight’s ceremony, there are the pre-parties. The BAFTA L.A. Tea Party is an annual fave and here are the best looks from this day event. There’s been a lot of bold color on the red carpet this week, I wonder if in part this is to show a big contrast to the black frock statement.
Emilia Clarke switches up the blazer I am still coveting for the perfect Michael Kors tea party floral frock. This is a lot of ruffles—which seems to be a big trend at the moment—but the color of this Rosie Assoulin dress looks great on Issa RaeMichelle Williams in a very Michelle Williams Louis Vuitton (of course) choice. You know I love it. Looking forward to Busy’s Insta Stories from tonight. More ruffles! I really wish this dress was lined, but I’m gonna give Rachel Brosnahan all the drama points in floral Christopher Kane. More ruffles and florals with Elizabeth Chambers ticking off these two trends in Giambattista Valli. Ilaria Urbinati does it again, giving Armie Hammer something fun to wear. This time more plaid. Emily V. Gordon continues to deliver on the patterned frocks. This one is perfect for this setting. Kumail, you look good too.
I'd watch a CHARLIE'S ANGELS remake where these three receive instructions from Drew Barrymore pic.twitter.com/jL8I8I3j5r
Also, count me in with this idea.A bold suit and paisley shirt combo for Daniel Kaluuya in pattern clashing Etro.I am still mad about what happened in The X-Files premiere. I am not mad about what is going on here with Gillian Anderson wearing a geometric print Victoria Beckham.Andrea Riseborough shows the #TimesUp message is one that can be worn all weekend.Well, holy shit. This is how you do a ladysuit. Bowing down always, to Isabelle Huppert. Also Gucci continues to do the most in the suit department.
Happy New Year! And welcome to the first “Out of the Box” of 2018. Strap in as it is a long one.
The first week in January is not a time to quietly slip into things because award season is well and truly here. The Golden Globes are this weekend, but before that we have sartorial highs from the NYFCC Awards and the Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards Gala, among other shindigs.
It is also Winter TCA! So much TV news to digest. Plus new magazines are hitting newsstands. For a deep dive into the super candid Michelle Williams conversation with Harper’s Bazaar head here.
But first watch Tiffany Haddish give an amazing 17-minute speech at the NYFCC Awards as filmed/uploaded by Buzzfeed’s Alison Willmore.
Golden Globes, this is what you are missing out on. Oscar voters please consider your options carefully. Haddish’s Girls Trip performance deserves celebrating. The Armie/Timothéeinteresting outfit tour continues. And once again they are playing off each other in much the same way that Elio and Oliver do in Call Me By Your Name; in one scene Elio wears horizontal stripes while Oliver is in vertical. Complimentary, but also at odds.
At the NYFCC Awards Chalamet opts for pinstripes while Hammer goes for purple check Etro. Looking forward to more from this pair throughout this awards cycle.Get Out’s Betty Gabriel leans into a ’80s rom-com vibe in pink ombré Pamella Roland. Let’s also take this moment to rage over how dumb the SAG Awards rules are when it comes to the ensemble category. So, so dumb. As part of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Jessica Chastain attended Variety’s Creative Impact Awards and 10 Directors to Watch, in day event Givenchy dress perfection. Plus it has pockets. I saw Molly’s Game this week and whoa was this is a good reminder of the bandage dress and super cleavy trends of the mid to late ’00s. And there those bandage dresses should stay.
Chastain is incredible in this film, but the last act is a mess. As I mentioned on Twitter, when there is good Sorkin there comes bad Sorkin. And that bench therapy scene is definitely the latter. I know I should hate the cropped palazzo pants aspect and beige strappy sandals, but I love the overall bold pink/red combo. The scarlet bustier is fabulous and Wonder Woman adjacent. Gal Gadot looks effortlessly cool in this Oscar da la Renta ensemble that would threaten to swap others. A whole lot of swoon at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards from both Sebastian Stan and Allison Janney. Janney is crushing it in green Lela Rose. How to do sophisticated and comfy elegance the Jessica Paré way. Megan Draper would definitely approve. Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon featured on our Best of 2017 “Out of the Box” rundown and they are already kicking the new year off in style. Mustard plus a cape element makes this a dream dress and I’m all for a plaid dinner jacket. Going for gold in Dolce & Gabbana. Tick. Another strong look for Armie Hammer courtesy of Ilaria Urbinati.
At the Palm Springs after party Saoirse Ronan in striking pink and gold Gucci caught up with her Lady Bird co-star, Timothée Chalamet. This photo is delightful. An early contender for best airport style. The only thing I would change about Emilia Clarke’s outfit is those shoes. Switch them out for the Adidas sneakers would really make this look. Coveting this blazer hard.Fox kicked off Winter 2018 TCA yesterday including a panel from new show 9-1-1. Aisha Hinds is giving great pattern clashing and bold lipstick. And people rarely work a pair of specs as fun as these. The thing to remember about TCA is to pick an outfit that looks great sitting down and Hinds does just this. Matt Czuchry is back on TV in The Resident and now he has facial hair! Because he is a doctor with no time to shave. Also a dream chunky knit sweater and leather coat is giving me strong feelings. Bruce Greenwood is working those silver fox vibes, but is Shaunette Renée Wilson in beautiful velvet that is really drawing my sartorial drooling. Not going to get bored of seeing these two. Nope. Never. This is great cover; simple and striking.W’s Best Performers of the Year issue is always super fun. This cover has me writing a script for an ’80s set movie starring Saoirse Ronan and Andrew Garfield, where they play rich siblings who start off as assholes but then have an important lesson to learn. There will be a dance scene.
This also might be the first time someone has appeared in three separate shots on “Out of the Box.”Warming my soul and causing me to write a rom-com starring Tom Hanks and Mary J. Blige, in a second chance at love scenario. Glamour needs to stop with this coverline design. It is too much and not in a good way. What they don’t need to stop with is cover images like this one and I love everything about this shot of Tracee Ellis Ross.
Ross also has some super wise words, particularly on the discussion that is happening and not just in Hollywood, after the Harvey fallout:
“Yes, it is so simple. Of course people want to be complimented, but you want to be complimented in a way that respects who you are—maybe you don’t want to be complimented on your clothing. You have that right to say to your coworker, “That’s not a thing that I enjoy.” “Oh, no problem. I won’t do that anymore.” It is all about respect and giving people a choice about how we are touching and talking about their body. Historically, women have not had ownership of our own bodies. And it is enough. It is enough. You do not get to touch my body or comment on my body as you please. Period.”
Game of Thrones returns this Sunday (July 16) and this week’s “Out of the Box” is dominated by the HBO juggernaut with both the big LA premiere and magazine covers (see also Lena Headey’s stunner for The Edit). It is not just all GoT and there’s more fashion shows, editorials and fun cover shoots. Love is dead for Jon Snow and Ygritte (quite literally), but it is still very much alive IRL for Kit Harington and Rose Leslie on the GoT blue carpet. Plus they’re doing a couples floral theme with Harington adding some flare in jacquard Dolce & Gabbana and Leslie in a dramatic Erdem.
A brief interlude because this collaboration is VERY exciting:
Leslie is also ticking those important pocket boxes and I know that YMMV when it comes to a guy not wearing socks on the red carpet, but it very much goes with Kit’s overall look here. Plus it is summer. And who doesn’t want to wear formal slippers when they can. This is a very fun (and slightly terrifying) Vivienne Westwood frock from Nathalie Emmanuel and she’s got the perfect red lipstick for this look. Love the floral metallic heels too.Keeping with the face theme is Sophie Turner in a sparkly Louis Vuitton Resort mini dress. Turner has been at quite a few LV events recently so expect to see more of her in this brand and this looks great on her. Also getting the shimmer memo is Gwendoline Christie in this ethereal plunging number that is straight out of The Great Gatsby. It is never too early for animal print and Amanda Peet is also bringing the red lipstick power to the GoT blue carpet. This looks very warm for this time of year, but Julianne Moore is working the Calvin Klein duvet as coat vibe at Raf Simons runway show. Contrasting plaid sleeves add to the slightly bananas cool. For a more classic approach there’s Matt Bomer at the Todd Snyder – who he wore to the CFDA Awards – and he’s also gone sockless. As with Kit Harington, it works with this ensemble. Polo shirt perfection. While watching GLOW I tried to work out where I knew Gayle Rankin (Sheila) from and because I am sometimes stubborn I didn’t turn to IMDb to answer this question. Enter Interview Magazineand this fabulous profile of Rankin, which informs me that she is so familiar because I saw her in the recent Cabaret revival back in May 2014.
This profile is less about GLOW and more about her current project as she is playing Ophelia to Oscar Isaac’s Hamlet and because I am pretty basic at times, this is my favorite Shakespeare play. And I love Rankin’s Ophelia interpretation:
“The reason she kills herself is because the world has proven to her that love doesn’t exist. I get that, I understand why she’s like “Well, what’s the point? If love doesn’t exist, what’s the point?”
The shoot is also fantastic with oversized menswear, sweaters and tailored suits with the look above capturing a lot of what I am looking forward to from fall fashion.Absent from the GoT premiere, but crushing it on the cover of the new August issue of Elleis Emilia Clarke. This Dolce & Gabbana frock is giving me strong early ’90s vibes and use of lipstick print works like a charm.
In the excerpt she discusses Daenerys’ “commanding sex scene with Daario” to which she says:
“That’s a scene I’ve been waiting for!’ Because I get a lot of crap for having done nudes scenes and sex scenes. That, in itself, is so antifeminist. Women hating on other women is just the problem. That’s upsetting, so it’s kind of wonderful to have a scene where I was like, ‘There you go!”
I’m gonna have to disagree with Clarke here in that it isn’t about women hating on other women, but objecting to scenes which use “sexposition” (to use a term coined by Myles McNutt). This isn’t to say she hasn’t experienced a level of unnecessary vitriol, but the objections to the amount of nudity in GoT is not antifeminist as it is directed at the creatives rather than the actors. Or at least it should be directed at those behind the camera. Another show returning soon is Broad City (August 23) and Abbi and Ilana are on the cover of the Nylon denim issue. There are a lot of out there denim pieces to enjoy and the interview discusses their partnership as well as the new season. One factor I am looking forward to is Broad City turning from a summer show that airs in winter to a winter show airing in summer. Something I have definitely thought about more than I should.
Part of this change comes as a result of the current political climate and Ilana explains how this will impact the fabric of Broad City:
“We won’t be picking up exactly from November 9. But our timeline will be vaguely current. This season is infused with what they’re feeling—and what we’re feeling—which is something along the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Sometimes it may just be a joke, or something in the background, but we definitely want that feeling to be cohesive across the season.”
The interview also explores their creative evolution and why it is important for them to work on separate projects. While season 3 wasn’t my fave, I am excited to have these ladies and characters back soon.
The Wine Show is coming to Hulu August 13 and get ready for the Matthews in full cheeky scamp mode with a big dose of dad jokes and puns. It is wonderful.
The Looking movie airs this Sunday and while I am so not ready to be over (a thing I keep repeating in relation to this project) I am excited to feel all the feelings. Frankie J. Alvarez is doing a very good job in preparing me.
Chris Geere looks back to season 1 premiere of You’re the Worst and it isn’t too long until Gretchen and Jimmy will be back on our screens. *insert prayer hands emoji here*
Lots of fall show casts are back on set and Vincent Rodriguez III from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend gives good hot weather hydration reminders (my apartment is a sweatbox so I definitely need to do this).
So Rachel Bloom didn’t get the acting nomination I was hoping for and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend missed out on Best Comedy, but they did score song and choreography nods for “Settle for Me” (and two other dance numbers).
Emilia Clarke celebrates the Game of Thrones supporting actress category domination – sad to see no Sophie Turner – with a look at the not so glamorous nature of set life.
Also in the supporting category is Constance Zimmer (if only Shiri Appleby could have been nominated in the lead category too) wearing this fabulous dress from the UnREAL season 2 episode “Infiltration.”
Between Orange is the New Black and “The Battle of the Bastards” there was a lot going on this week on TV and this edition of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” has got you covered on both. Plus we’ve got shows that are currently in productions, ones that have just finished and lots of other fun stuff is on the Instagram highlights menu.
A “How to Get Blood out of Your Beard” tutorial is probably needed for the Game of Thrones guys and it is good to see all is crazy in love when the camera stops rolling.
I have a lot of feelings about this new season of Orange is the New Black and I don’t want to say too much for those who have not finished yet, but I am very happy the OITNB cast have been posting photos like the one above. Need this moment of happiness.
Now for shows currently in production and this bts shot of Justin Theroux from season 3 of The Leftovers. As Theroux points out; no handcuffs (or shirt) necessary.
After recently marathoning my way through the first two seasons of iZombie I’ve still got that post-watch emptiness (see also OITNB) so even though there isn’t a season 3 premiere date yet, it is good to see some of the cast back on iZombie duty.
While a lot of the FNL cast were in Austin for the ATX Television Festival; Aimee Teegarden, Taylor Kitsch, Zach Gilford and Minka Kelly were taking part in the Spartan Race. Another reunion I can get behind. Even with Kitsch’s mustache.
The Hollywood Reporterhas their award season roundtables gathering a group of actors/writers/showrunners who are at the top of their game and over at Variety they do things one-on-one getting the actors to interview other actors. Last year I referred to this setup as picking your dream dinner dates and that still stands with the line-up this year.
So far only a handful of the full videos are available on YouTube (you can find them all on Variety) and they are ideal viewing if you are suffering from show withdrawal or if like me you just love this time of year when TV awards chat is in full focus. First up we have Courtney B. Vance and Tracee Ellis Ross in this almost 40-minute extravaganza discussing everything from college, to the OJ Simpson trial and discussions of race on Black-ish.
And in people I didn’t know went to high school together; Rami Malek and Kirsten Dunst. Also love that Kirsten Dunst would listen to Dolly Parton’s “Here I Am” before scenes in which Peggy was particularly feeling herself.
Talking about producing material and creating their own work with Master of None and Confirmation. Plus audition chat and now I’m left wondering which two shows Kerry Washington got fired off for the horrific reason of not sounding ‘urban’ enough. Is one of them Wonderfalls? On a fashion note I have already mentioned how much I loveKerry Washington’s dress and I will be doing so again.
Jay Duplass tells a very funny story about having more sexual partners on screen in one season of Transparent than he has in his whole life and Emilia Clarke reveals why she ended up dancing in her Game of Thrones audition (always blame Diet Coke).
And finally from two Ryan Murphy projects we have Jamie Lee Curtis and Lady Gaga with Lady Gaga explaining how she got on board the American Horror Story train (she called him) and where Gaga ends and Stephanie begins. Turns out that Robert Durst is the surprising influence for Gaga’s performance on AHS.
It is not just one on one interviews Variety are gifting us this award season and you can watch a supporting actor roundtable featuring Regina King, Jonathan Banks, Miranda Otto, Anthony Mackie, Christian Slater and Maggie Siff here.
Updated to add this super delightful chat between Sam Heughan and Krysten Ritter. Heughan talks about the Outlander costumes and how helpful they are, which leads to Krysten Ritter breaking down Jessica’s unchanging wardrobe. They win my heart in an instant.
A very quiet week on Instagram on the TV work front because of Memorial Day weekend. This also means there have been plenty of celebs at the beach/hanging in the sunshine photos splashed across Insta of which we have a couple, but the majority of this week is dedicated to co-star hangouts and cute outfits.
Norman Reedus went to see Eclipsed and this ticks all my supporting a co-star in their other endeavors boxes. Plus a whole lot of patterned outfit delights.
More from the OITNB ladies and they’re celebrating Laverne Cox’s birthday, which also ticks those co-stars who hang out boxes. Plus it is just over two weeks until OITNB returns (Friday, June 17).
So this is not from this week, but as I just caught up with iZombie I have some new Insta accounts to peruse and this is just too wonderful not to include. Robert Buckley in glasses is a really good look.
Maisie Williams is giving me so many flashbacks to my first festival going summer way back when as the 90s continues to dominate. Whenever I see anyone with star earrings like this it makes me regret my non-pierced lobes.
There isn’t so much on set action this week as most shows are on some form of hiatus, but we still have plenty of behind the scenes treats including the UnREAL press tour, Vulture Fest, some new exciting projects, lots of glam and the odd bit of TV making magic.
And it’s double Lupita and Gina as I couldn’t pick between the two photos. This one also gives a better look at Gina Rodriguez’s hiatus hair (and here’s a more dramatic angle) and I love it so much. Such a bold and fantastic cut.
I am behind on every podcast I listen to at the moment, but I am very excited to hear this one from Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson aka 2 Dope Queens from Vulture Fest (which pretty much had my dream lineup).
A before Vulture Fest getting ready shot from Carly Chaikin and this is kinda making me want to figure out how to use Snapchat (my username is frazbelina). Also for more from the Mr Robot panel head here.
We have to wait until August 31 for season 3 of You’re the Worst so for now enjoy this collection of photos from the Vulture Fest Pop Culture Trivia Game Show.
Puppy heaven on The Late Show for Emilia Clarke (love her green dress) and she discussed the recent Free the D Game of Thrones moment. I’m not exactly sure this is what was being asked for (no one wants to hear about warts) but I guess it is a start?
Shiri Appleby didn’t get to play with puppies, but she did pose with this Late Show cushion and the UnREAL cast are doing an excellent job on the Instagram promo front with plenty of photos.
I am also beyond excited about this and Jenny Slate’s outfit is pretty much the platonic ideal of casual wear. Can never go wrong with jeans, Cons, a grey sweater and sunglasses.
Priyanka Chopra flies in gown style when hopping from one event to another and this also reminds me that I am about 5 episodes behind on Quantico (I am behind on so much). This dress/color on her is fantastic.
LadySuitWatch2016 alert! Anne Hathaway was in the fantastic Jenny Lewis video for “One of the Guys” and here she is giving a nod to Lewis in custom Jenny Packham while promoting Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Allison Williams’ style is morphing into Marnie on the final season of Girls while Lena Dunham and Jemima Kirke are accidentally twinning in very similar checks.
Cush Jumbo and Adrienne C. Moore are currently performing in an all-female production of The Taming of the Shrew and there are plenty of ways to adapt Shakespeare as the above clip shows.
Last week, just as I went to start writing “Behind the Insta-Scenes” my internet speed started to lag; I tried to watch the new Orange is the New Black promo and the blurry quality suggested some kind of wifi issue. And then my router stopped working. In happy news a replacement was quickly dispatched and I am up and running once again (no more setting up camp in my friend’s front room). So long story short is that some of this week’s Instagram round up includes some pictures that were intended for last week.
There’s Cannes glamour (and jet lag), the emotional Jane the Virgin season 2 finale and much more.
A post shared by Greg Williams (@gregwilliamsphotography) on
This might be more of what you were expecting from Cannes Instagram and Greg Williams is one of my favorite photographers on Insta; part of this is down to the intimate quality of the shots he gets in crowed places and this one of Caitriona Balfe is stunning.
Emilia Clarke finds Jon Snow on the newsstand and lists off some very timely political hashtags to boot. Nice to see Kyle Chandler on the cover of Men’s Journal in the background there.
Jason Momoa has very strong positive feelings about the most recent episode of Game of Thrones hitting that ‘co-stars who care about each other’ sweet spot of mine.
Lots of emotions going on after watching the Jane the Virgin season 2 finale. Most involved some form of crying. Also laughing with a dash of yelling “DON’T DO IT” at my screen.
I did happen to see this before I watched the episode so I knew there would be some Rose related twist, but I did not see this one coming even with their matching outfits above. I am very happy to have Bridget Regan back even if the thing that she did ends up sticking (I don’t think it will).
One of last week’s intended picks and I love this collection of Mindy’s favorite season 4 looks. My personal fave is the very 70s looking patterned pussy bow collar blouse and pants with the plunging party dress as a runner up.
New UnREAL is so close (June 6!) and I wonder if this means Anna will be popping up this season. Also in a fun life kinda imitates art sitch Johanna Brady is dating Freddie Stroma IRL and I am sure it is already much better than Anna’s relationship with Adam.
This week sees a lot of regular “Out of the Box” faces and a whole host of events from daytime celebrations to premieres and panel discussions. Plus Teen Vogue continues to blow their adult counterpart out of the water in the cover stakes. Bold pattern continues to reign strong and there is a lot of awesome lady inspiration below. Last week Lupita Nyong’o’s Variety magazine cover for their annual Power of Women issue caused all the heart eye emoji reactions and here she is at the event honoring the work of this year’s recipients. Wearing a lime green daisy embroidered Dolce & Gabbana; Nyong’o is a springtime vision with a hint of 60s to her look. Excellent lipstick choice too.Danai Gurira was also in attendance supporting Lupita who is currently starring in her Broadway play Eclipsed. This is the perfect day dress for this event and looks good without drawing too much focus from the person who is being honored. This is also Gurira’s second week in a row on Out of the Box and she is crushing it in a variety of styles this year from super cool jumpsuits to flowing frocks.Confirmation airs on HBO tomorrow (Saturday 16) and Kerry Washington recently took part in a Times Talk with Anita Hill; the woman Washington is portraying in the movie. This Carolina Herrera dress reads serious with a hint of whimsy in the floral and pink sheer trim. SJP Collection shoes top it all off and Washington looks great. You can watch the whole fascinating and sometimes rage inducing discussion about the making and history behind Confirmation here.Oh, hello. Emily VanCamp in J Mendel at the Captain America: Civil War premiere with a ‘just the perfect amount of beardy’ Chris Evans. The fact they are posing together gives me some hope that Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter will get quite a lot/something to do in the new movie (even if she doesn’t really feature in the trailers at all).Game of Thrones season 6 is almost here and Emilia Clarke has been hitting the promo train hard on magazine covers, at the premiere and the MTV Movie Awards. This might be my favorite of the three recent looks we’ve featured as this face emblazoned Miu Miu dress is unusual in the most mesmerizing way. Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s “Fresh Faces” Marie Claire cover is striking and at the party celebrating this issue she stood out in a delightful star emblazoned – perhaps as a nod to the stars on cover – Coach 1941 dress; which I am now coveting hard. Teen Vogue’s cover game this year has been so strong and their Willow Smith May issue is another captivating image choice. As with other recent teen covers (including another one Smith appears on) there is something beautifully disarming in the direct look to camera and the accompanying interview/editorial is just as interesting.
