Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Feb

Black Panther is now out, but this doesn’t mean the cast won’t be gracing “Out of the Box” this week. And yep, there is more awards season shenanigans with the BAFTAs, fashion week, magazine covers, premiere and other sartorially pleasing events. As with the Golden Globes and the Costume Designers Guild Awards—for more on that red carpet head here—the majority of attendees wore black in support of the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements.

Lupita Nyong’o keeps with her dresses that resemble some form of armor theme, this time in Elie Saab. Also with that all important twirl factor.

Before the BAFTAs, Lupita was joined by Danai Gurira in South Africa. These stunning shots could easily be a magazine shoot.

Formal ladysuits are still having a moment on the red carpet much to my delight; Ruth Wilson looks fabulous in Christian Dior. The sandals aren’t the obvious choice, but I think they work. As does that shade of red lipstick. This Zuhair Murad ensemble was probably chosen before the Black Panther press tour, but it is hard not to see the influence here. Naomie Harris looks stunning in this feathered and sheer number—sometimes I like these two things combined—and as with the Golden Globes the pants/dress hybrid is working like a charm. Fashion Week has now hit Milan, at the Gucci show Rowan Blanchard is delivering 1970s reporter with a hot scoop in a green jumpsuit. I love everything about this.Keeping with the ’70s look is Aya Cash at the opening night of her new play Kings. Cash spilled her outfit secrets on Instagram; this orange dress beauty is vintage and the shoes are Forever 21. Pop socks continue to be a thing I want to try out, but I’m not sure I can pull off.At the Game Night premiere, Sharon Horgan wears The Vampire’s Wife and of course I am super into this witchy prairie styling.

Millie Bobby Brown looks like she is going to Spring Formal in polka dot Rodarte and I mean that as a compliment. This frock also reminds me of what Rodarte fave Kirsten Dunst wore for her Nylon cover. At the Brit Awards, Brown holds a white rose as a sign of support for the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns.Atlanta is back next week for season two! I am so ready. At the premiere Lakeith Stanfield, Brian Tyree Henry, Donald Glover and Zazie Beetz are all serving up strong looks. Glover is also keeping with the ’70s inspiration in Salvatore Ferragamo, which is all over this week’s column. And at the after party, Zazie Beetz shows how to go from fancy white halter to casual, in one easy grey sweatshirt step. These are some GQMF at a GQ event celebrating Timothée Chalamet’s cover, including CMBYN co-star Armie Hammer.  A good array of jackets on display.

After weeks of watching Darren Criss giving such an incredible performance on American Crime Story it took a moment to adjust to see him smiling next to a non-Versace looking Edgar Ramirez. Jamie Dornan is also sporting the beard I hope he never shaves off again; in this facial hair contest, Hammer is definitely trailing behind.  On the slightly more casual end of things is man of the hour Timothée Chalamet with Kid Cudi (yes I still miss How To Make It In America) and Black Panther’s Winston Duke. A pop of orange is the way to make a dark suit shine.Jordan Peele got to turn Janelle Monáe into a Hitchcock protagonist for W Magazine and the results are as incredible as this cover is. And ladysuits aplenty! GQ Style teased the Oscar Isaac profile on Monday night; on Tuesday they did not let us down. Not only is this a mesmerizing shoot featuring a whole lot of suits, but the interview goes deep on Isaac’s career, his process, how his mother’s death impacted his relationships and that he was shooting Star Wars and Annihilation at the same time.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

1 Sep

Film festival season is here! And this means a whole lot of great daytime photocall looks and fancy frocks with Venice kicking things off. Plus the VMAs and You’re the Worst’s season 4 premiere event. The latter is definitely on my most anticipated fall TV style and everything else list.At the VMAs, Yara Shahidi goes gold in Zimmerman and with a few creases aside it is a super sophisticated look from the soon to be Growin-ish star. Shahidi continues to impress with her sartorial choices.Sparkling under the VMA lights is Gal Gadot in a very pretty Prabal Gurung and this is a delightful look. Second week in a row for Gadot; sadly no Wonder Woman cuffs this time.Less than a week until new You’re the Worst — back Wednesday, September 6 — and at the premiere Aya Cash gives great metallic accents in a lovely purple number.

As always I have lipstick envy and thanks to You’re the Worst makeup artist Kristina Frisch, I now know that this Aya Cash TCA lipstick is Stila longwear liquid lipstick in Fiery. Social media really does help the makeup treasure hunt.Working the no socks thing and crushing these casual suit vibes are Darrell Britt-Gibson and Brandon Mychal Smith, with Britt-Gibson also giving great pattern shirt. My feelings are strong when it comes to a bold collar and Lake Bell’s beaded Antonio Berardi Fall 2017 frock at the Home Again premiere is ticking those boxes. As are the colorful pumps by Tamara Mellon and Edie Parker clutch. The Venice Film Festival is underway and much to my delight, Rebecca Hall is on the jury and at the juror photocall she wore a Altuzarra Resort 2018 dress that makes me want to get a cocktail. The pattern/silhouette also reminds me of a bathrobe that I own and anything that is sleepwear adjacent is a win. Fabulous strappy red sandals too.I’m digging Kristen Wiig’s bowl bob and polka dot Prabal Gurung Resort 2018 dress with bonus doily trim and billowy sleeves. Adding some silver floral flare in Sophia Webster sandals at the Downsizing photocall. And later on at the Downsizing premiere Venice jury member and Queen Annette Bening gives a classic style lesson in black Armani with embellished sleeves. Great lipstick and frames to boot.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

11 Aug

Florals are here to stay — much to my delight — and this is the final week of the summer TCA press tour, which means more panel attire and some fancy awards threads. TCA is not the only celebration this week as there is also Black Girls Rock! and Variety’s ‘Power of Young Hollywood’ event.

Plus the excellent magazine covers continue. It is September (in magazine terms) after all.

Unrelated, but check out my interview with Defenders costume designer Stephanie Maslansky here.At the American Horror Story: Cult panel, Sarah Paulson looks stunning in a watercolor adjacent lace Monique Lhuillier frock (as always tipping my hat to Karla Welch) and I’m happy to kick off this week’s “Out of the Box” with something this bold.

As always I am intrigued by the new season of AHS, but I tend to lose interest halfway through a season and the only one I have made it to the end of was Coven. And that isn’t even the best one. So there is a high chance this will happen once again. But the cast is always very good and I am here for all the promotional time with Sarah Paulson. One of my best makeup purchases last year came courtesy of Aya Cash (also at TCA) and once again Cash is the lipstick queen of TCA. Yes I have shamelessly asked her on Instagram what shade it is (as she is sadly no longer on Twitter).

This Christine Alcalay top is also another fabulous take on the floral trend and I cannot wait for You’re the Worst to come back. Even if that season 3 ender was a full on heartbreak.Sterling K. Brown is a man of many talents — and surprise cameos — and at the TCA Awards he sang For Good” from Wicked with former Wicked star and host of the TCA Awards, Kristin Chenoweth. So many swoons. Also a great sparkly mini frock from Chenoweth.

A post shared by Elisabeth Moss (@elisabethmossofficial) on

Not quite the usual hotel corridor pose from Elisabeth Moss, but just as fabulous pre-TCA Awards and another amazing Vampire’s Wife pick from Karla Welch. This color is stunning.Issa Rae was honored at Black Girls Rock – airing on Tuesday, August 22 on BET — and I am digging this whole ’70s vibe. Oh hey, Jay Ellis. Loving the choice of pants/jacket.

The video for Jay-Z’s “Moonlight” — directed by Master of None’s Alan Yang — is now available for non-TIDAL subscribers to watch, so that portion of pop culture FOMO is over and it is just as good (if not better) than the clips suggested it would be. Yara Shahidi once again proving she is a Magical Fashion Unicorn in a very hard to pull off Philosophy peplum floral jumpsuit at the ‘Power of Young Hollywood’ Variety celebration. If you know how I feel about ’70s styling — strongly positive — you will not be surprised to hear that I yelped with joy when I first saw this Zendaya cover for Variety, which leans hard into the whole disco vibe.

As with her recent Vogue profile, I read most of it pretty much nodding along and saying “fuck yeah” out loud. She’s great and I’m so glad she continues to get a large platform to speak out to fans both old and new.

She articulates why her Spider-Man character was so interesting and I hope this continues in the second movie “It was nice to play a character who wasn’t a damsel in distress but actually very smart, quirky, different and outspoken.” And on her fashion line she notes the importance of not having specific plus size sections “I don’t think thicker, curvier women should have to shop on a different section on my page or feel excluded.” Zendaya is the best and a solid choice from Variety for their ‘Power of Young Hollywood’ issue. Donald Glover wasn’t there to pick up the Atlanta TCA Award on Saturday as he is still shooting the new Han Solo movie, but it is clear he is having a very good year. And as this Hollywood Reporter cover notes he is quite the multi-hyphenate. A good use of millennial pink, aviators and the Gucci tiger collar here and inside the issue.

In the piece Glover discusses the success of Atlanta — which I’m gonna do a rewatch of soon —and what it is like starring in an iconic franchise as the younger version of an iconic character (and some of the behind the scenes bumps that have occurred). There’s some great additional quotes from Tina Fey, Dan Harmon and his brother Stephen (who is also a writer on Atlanta) and the whole profile is a fascinating insight into Glover’s process while also remaining enigmatic when it comes to his personal life. The September issue of Nylon used to be their TV special and there is still that element, but I’m not gonna be too mad about the lack of TV star cover when forever fave Kirsten Dunst is here. And she is wearing the same amazing polka dot Alessandra Rich number — minus the black belt — that Beguiled co-star Nicole Kidman wore to the Veuve Clicquot Polo event.

I haven’t bought Nylon in ages, but I will definitely pick up this issue as both the shoot and interview are great. This profile is written by one of my favorite culture writers, Molly Lambert and while this piece is about Woodshock, it also acts as a great career retrospective of an actress who has been around for what feels like forever and has done a number of very different projects. Plus what she looks for now as “A lot of the choices I make are director-driven. I’d rather do a tiny little whatever in a good film.”

Bowling at the FX All-Star Event with The Americans, You’re the Worst and Fargo

7 Apr

FX is having quite the year already and what better way to showcase talent than an all-star upfront bowling event. This is now a set annual tradition for FX as this is their 8th bowling outing and at Lucky Strike in New York, casts from shows such as You’re the WorstThe AmericansFargoAtlanta and Legion gathered all in the spirit of FX.

Outfit wise this means a whole lot of casual attire because bowling and then there are some stacked heels that should be going nowhere near these lanes.

The You’re the Worst cast and creator Stephen Falk give great posing with weighty balls.

FX knows how to put on a shindig just as well as they make good TV if the size of Aya Cash’s beer is anything to go by.While these shoes might not be the best for this activity and look like they could easily slide off, Aya Cash’s jumpsuit is a great choice. Also her technique is going full Tom Haverford and as I found out when I last went bowling this is hit and miss. My terrible performance might have also been down to the amount of drinks we had while waiting for a lane to free up at The Gutter in Brooklyn. Also I am not a good bowler. Chris Geere gives great bowling stance. Still no bowling shoes though. We’ve seen that this is a favorite activity of the Jennings (and their covers) on The Americans and it is nice to see everyone out of the super tense environment of spy life in 1984. Also just how tall is Costa Ronin? It also looks like Henry found some Sun-In. It is really hard to write about this event without falling down an innuendo spiral (see the first photo). But what I will say is that it is nice to see Matthew Rhys with Costa Ronin as the pair have never shared a scene and probably won’t. But who knows.Great shoes for very different reasons from Margo Martindale and Keri Russell. Those heels are probably way too stacked for me – I can still love from afar – and Russell is leaning into the cool af thing she does so well at events like this mixing casual with some edge. Meanwhile I now very much want some silver Vans in my life.

Hanging at the bar is also my bowling speed (see early mention of my last bowling experience) and they’re with Christine Lahti. Lahti most recently popped up on The Good Fight as one of the many Good Wife actors who have made the jump and the depth of this guest star bench is outstanding.Ewan McGregor gives great bowling technique and he’s wearing bowling shoes. Yes he looks amazing.Jean Smart is doing that thing where you’re willing the ball to hit some pins, but in my case this doesn’t do much to help. Now I’m wondering which FX cast member is the best bowler.A couple from the red carpet and Legion’s Amber Midthunder – what a great name – will definitely need to switch out those amazing silver heels to bowl. Great dress choice that manages to swing between casual and fancy. A hooded henley is not something I’ve encountered a lot (or maybe ever?) and Atlanta’s Keith Stanfield pairs it with a great jacket and some classic Cons. Stanfield is straddling smart and casual in a way that I applaud.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Part 2

30 Dec

Rounding off the Best of 2016 series with Part 2 of our favorite “Out of the Box” moments. Last week we dedicated the first part to the magazine covers that stood out and now it is time for style highs from red carpets, events, awards and panels.

The only rule was they had to appear as part of “Out of the Box” and we’ve got a good mix of casual, fancy and everything in-between.Evan Rachel WoodBest LadySuitWatch2016

So many fantastic Evan Rachel Wood ladysuit moments in 2016 and it was super hard to pick a winner. This red one is incredible, but the collar, lipstick and metallic pumps from back in June take the prize.Yara Shahidi

Tracee Ellis RossBest Sequins: TV Mother/Daughter Edition

Yara Shahidi is not only 2016’s best dressed teen, but an overall style icon for the year. This super sparkly sequin Tracy Reese dress that she wore to the BET Awards gives me so much joy as does Tracee Ellis Ross at PaleyFest in March.julianne-mooreBest Sequins – Awards Edition

Continuing the sequin love and we’ve got the whole year covered as this was pretty recent; Julianne Moore in Tom Ford to celebrate Tom Ford at one of the many film award season events. Alicia VikanderBest Post-Oscar Party

It is not just the Oscar that makes Alicia Vikander’s post-Oscar Louis Vuitton much better than the yellow Beauty and the Beast style gown she wore to the actual ceremony. Everything about this is incredible and just because it is black it is far from boring; so many fantastic sequins in 2016.Brie LarsonBest Pattern – Eyes

First up Jacob Tremblay is 2016’s best dressed kid and he also outdid a lot of his older male counterparts. At the pre-Oscar photocall his tie matches his onscreen mom Brie Larson’s super fun Emilia Wickstead skirt and blouse. An instant standout style moment that brings much needed whimsy. Mary Elizabeth WinsteadBest Pattern – Lips

Mary Elizabeth Winstead was not only one of the best dressed characters on TV this year, but she also brought it on the red carpet. This Victoria Beckham red lip patterned dress is very high on my covet list.Kirsten DunstBest Cannes

Serving on the jury at Cannes this year meant so many amazing Kirsten Dunst ensembles from the fancy to casual chic; it is this yellow Dior daytime perfection with an A+ red lipstick that was my favorite. Lupita Nyong'oBest Pattern Clashing

Pleats tend to make me want to twirl and Lupita Nyongo’s colorful Prada frock at the Obie Awards is giving me those feelings. It could look like a lot against the equally bold floral backdrop and yet Nyong’o is totally pulling this off.Aubrey PlazaTatiana Maslany ColbertBest Talk Show Entrance

Aubrey Plaza is a forever style icon and has featured in these end of year lists in the past. First she started my pleated leather skirt obsession and in June 2016 she arrived at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in pretty much my dream casual outfit. Tatiana Maslany on the other hand is doing the sneakers with heels in her hand thing while also arriving at The Late Show and she is another casual dress queen. caitriona-balfeBest Black and White

Everything about Caitriona Balfe’s Burberry gown is a dream at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards showing that she looks fantastic in any era. I’m excited to see what she will wear to the Golden Globes in a couple of weeks.mads-mikkelsenBest Hannibal

Mads Mikkelsen looks really great in a suit and this is the first Best of year without any Hannibal. Thankfully at the Doctor Strange premiere Mads is wearing a suit that wouldn’t look out of place on the famous cannibal he plays. matthew-rhys-and-keri-russell-operaBest Cape

Serving up so much drama at the Met Opera in September and Keri Russell has worn Stephane Rolland for three very dressy events this year – the other two being at the White House and Emmys – and this black caped number is my overall favorite. A very fancy date night with Matthew Rhys. constance-zimmer-and-shiri-applebyBest Friends

Thankfully things are a lot better IRL between Constance Zimmer and Shiri Appleby than their UnREAL counterparts and while season 2 was super messy/missed the mark in places, the subsequent promo tour and red carpet appearances always delivered.

This is from the Elle Women in Hollywood celebration at the end of October; they are giving off metallic dress and flaming hot jumpsuit excellence.Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne, Elisabeth Olsen, Michael B. JordanBest Sunglasses

As the Fug Girls like to say “Everybody looks hotter in sunglasses” and the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic helps prove this theory. Summer wardrobe delights from Elizabeth Olsen, Michael B. Jordan, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale.TCA You're the WorstBest TCA

Panel outfits are an “Out of the Box” fave as they tend to deliver on the casual cool. With Aya Cash she also delivers on great lipstick and she also let me know what brand and color (Inglot 13). I picked it up while on honeymoon and it is fantastic. Thanks, Aya!2 Dope QueensBest Crown

To my favorite podcast of the year and two women that made 2016 a whole lot better (including the time they were there for me when I traveled home on the train after my dad died in July). This fabulous shot of Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson from The New York Times puts the crown in 2 Dope Queens.Sarah Paulson and Sterling K BrownBest Look of the Week

I said this at the time and I’ll say it again, but the way Sarah Paulson is looking at Sterling K. Brown is how I would look at Sterling K. Brown. Marcia and Chris 4EVA.

The month of everything happening continues with the Toronto Film Festival and Hidden Figures is on my most anticipated list (see also La La LandManchester by the SeaColossal and Jackie). Glen Powell is pretty much the main reason I stuck with Scream Queens and he’s got the best co-star hangouts at TIFF.

The search for the perfect Emmy dress continues and I wonder if we will see any of these on the red carpet come September 18.

I can only see half this sweater, but I know I love it.

You’re the Worst returned last week with a fabulous episode and the cast took over the Backstage Instagram. There’s plenty of behind the scenes videos including Chris Geere showing off a modesty pouch/cock sock. He definitely had to wear one in the season premiere.

Standard lipstick and sunglasses envy.

Chris Geere was also understandably excited to make his talk show debut on The Late Show.

One of my favorite costume designers with one of my favorite actresses. Looking forward to seeing what this pairing brings.

Now for one of my makeup artist faves with another Orange is the New Black stars and this series of photos of Natasha Lyonne are fantastic.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

1 Sep

One of the busiest months of the year in terms of TV and fashion is here so this week’s “Out of the Box” is a fun mix of film festival attire, talk shows and magazine editorials. While I’m on the subject of September and how busy it is you can now also sign up to my weekly newsletter here. The first one is all about this time of year and is an extension of everything TV Ate My Wardrobe.Emma StoneEmma Stone at the Venice Film Festival wearing a delightful floral Giambattista Valli, which is an ideal daytime photocall outfit for La La Land. Paired with suede ochre heels gives this a late 70s feel that I am – in non-shocking news – in love with. I am very excited about this movie and the costume design is already giving me all the heart eyes.Zooey DeschanelGiving off casual cool at Jimmy Kimmel Live! is Zooey Deschanel and I’ve been after a good pair of denim dungarees. To me they are jumpsuit adjacent in that I don’t own a pair and they give me the same clothing related bathroom fears.

On the show Deschanel also looked great in a black ensemble paired with some super sparkly amazing flats and a collar that ticks all the boxes. Plus she talked about how much her daughter loves cheese, her TV directorial debut and the New Girl crossover with Brooklyn Nine-Nine.Aja Naomi KingInterview Magazine continues to deliver on great photoshoots and interviews – well I guess it is the title of the magazine – and this week HTGAWM’s Aja Naomi King chats with OITNB’s Danielle Brooks about their classic training, TV and King’s role in The Birth of a Nation. Also working with Viola Davis sounds as incredible as you probably imagined it would be.

“She brings you in, and it feels like family. When you’re in that kind of family environment, when you’re tasked with doing something difficult, you can allow yourself to be brave because you know you’re surrounded by people that love you, that only want the best for you. From day one, it’s been that wonderful. I was terrified. That first scene we’re in together in the pilot, I was so scared. Here she is, being amazing in this room, and I just want her to think I’m amazing too.”Aya Cash Interview MagAlso in Interview is Aya Cash and I am thrilled You’re the Worst is back for a third season. The premiere episode is really great, made me teary and sparked an important shower related debate.  As with the Aja Naomi King picture Aya Cash nails the disarming black and white shot in stunning fashion.

In the interview Cash discusses how Stephen Falk had to fight for her to get the part of Gretchen, audition rejections, the doors You’re the Worst has opened and what she’d be doing if she wasn’t acting. This also has me very excited:

“I’m starting to produce. I’m developing a project for myself based on one of my mom’s books. I really don’t have a specific idea of where I want my career to go, I just have an idea of wanting to continue to work and work on things that I like and think are good. I don’t need to be crazy rich and crazy famous. I would just like to keep going.”Aya CashThis all-Prada ensemble shot is also fantastic and I couldn’t pick between the two. For more from this Interview shoot head here.Rachel WeiszChunky knit season is upon us and upstate New York is the place for these late summer shoots as The Edit shows with this fantastic Rachel Weisz spread. This turtleneck sweater is perhaps a tad outside my budget and it is still too warm for such garments, but I can dream.Stranger Things kidsStranger Things is one of the undeniable hits of the summer and part of the reason for its success and resonance is the kids at the center of the story. Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo all appeared on The Tonight Show this week timed perfectly for the season 2 pickup announcement. Style wise it has been a lot of Winona (for good reason) on here, but the kids dominated this piece I wrote.

And in real life they are pretty adorable and charming. Outfit wise they are all perfect and Millie Bobby Brown’s dress and flats are super cute. Points for all. Plus she crushes Nicki Minaj’s “Monster” verse.

To be filed under “this is kind of cool, but also creepy as fuck.”

Eva Longoria is directing an episode of Jane the Virgin this season and everyone is very pleased with this. Also the amount of Brett Dier popping up in these shots would suggest Michael is not going to be dearly departed.

And a ladies only version. I am thrilled to see Bridget Regan kicking it on set.

Lots of Emmy prep this week including dress choosing, shoes I want to see on the red carpet and hitting the campaign trail. Plus fun guest stars, going back to work with Master of None and our weekly updates from the sets of You’re the WorstJane the Virgin and iZombie.

Older superheroes appearing on current superhero shows is one of my favorite guest star subgenres.

It seems like a good sign that Aziz Ansari has not rushed making season 2 of Master of None. And that they will be shooting in Italy. Once again I am going to want to eat all the pasta.

Emmy campaigning continues and Deadline has another interview to be savored. This time it is with Tatiana Maslany and the above quote and series of images is a pretty good example of why we heart Maslany hard. To read the whole wonderful interview head here.

A different form of Emmy prep and Constance Zimmer gives a sneak peek into the what dress to wear dilemma.

Oh hey @Gucci #TIFFfittings

I would love it if someone wears these really fun Gucci heels to the Emmys. Far better than anything in the beige range.

Also on the Emmy trail (as well as promoting S2 of Mr Robot – here is my latest Mr Robot costuming piece) is Rami Malek and on The Late Show he took his first Instagram photo. Leaning in completely with a selfie stick shot.

Bonus video of this moment/Rami demonstrating his loveliness.

Aya Cash got a new dog and her Instagram feed is now about 75% Lucy and 100% delightful.

I would say this is a selfie success.

Everything about the look on the kid (or one of the kids) who plays baby Mateo on Jane the Virgin is precious.

Fall TV season is almost here and this means lots of Insta reminders (which I am so grateful for).
