Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Mar

Puppies, ladysuits and the Stylist issue of The Hollywood Reporter are all on the “Out of the Box” menu this week. The latter delivers the best roundtable conversation I have seen in a while and you can also watch this below. Sound the ladysuit klaxon! Daisy Ridley looks stunning in a Sara Battaglia Pre-Fall 2018 tuxedo at the Rakuten Empire Film Awards. Full Marlene Dietrich vibes. Every time I see Vanessa Kirby out of her Princess Margaret garb it takes me a moment to realize who she is. But she is just as glamorous in 2018 as she is in 1950s attire, including this super moody floral Erdem ensemble. A stunning Jasper Conran A/W ’18 two-tone blue dress worn by Simona Brown at the Rakuten Empire Film Awards. Love the choice of bag to make this outfit pop even more.

I did a whole post yesterday about how much fun this Americans press tour has been so far. The caped jacket as worn by Keri Russell at the Washington D.C. premiere is another distinct look and this is one of the many lipsticks I have been coveting. Makeup artist Tina Turnbow always delivers on the BTS and beauty delights. There were some very special plus ones at an Isle of Dogs screening this week and Jeff Goldblum has coordinated his shoes with his pup. Tilda Swinton always gives fabulous and interesting red carpet. The good doggo obviously draws focus, but this is a fabulous jacket.

While I’m on the subject of Isle of Dogs; I am a Wes Anderson fan and I am looking forward to this film, but this review by Justin Chang gave me pause (and reinforced some of my concerns from aspects of the trailer). This is why diversity in film criticism is so important.

Regular readers will know how much I love a roundtable, especiallyHollywood Reporter roundtable. So I am thrilled that the annual Stylists issue also includes the first ever stylist roundtable featuring Law Roach (Zendaya, Mary J. Blige) Jeanne Yang (Kumail Nanjiani), Jason Bolden (Ava DuVernay), Tara Swennen (Allison Janney) and a woman I have mentioned countless times on here, particularly for menswear; Ilaria Urbinati (Armie Hammer, Donald Glover, Rami Malek).

This is a fascinating conversation that gets to the heart of the work a stylist does during award season and beyond. It includes having to negotiate with brands depending on who the client is, which stylist had two days to find a dress before the Oscars and how they sourced that many black ensembles for this year’s Golden Globes. A fascinating and enlightening watch that includes a range of opinions and processes when approaching this job.The Hollywood Stylist issue of The Hollywood Reporter is one of my most anticipated—see also the Emmy actress issues and the Beauty issue—and the fact that it comes just after award season means we get to celebrate the people behind the looks we have been drooling over. The hard work deserves attention.

The Black Panther press tour is going to be long remembered for how incredible it was from both a menswear and gown POV. Chadwick Boseman delivered time after time in an array of striking blazers. He appears on the front cover with stylist Ashley Weston in another standout blazer, Weston bounces off this sartorial choice in delicate florals. While I didn’t love Saoirse Ronan’s Oscar frock, she kept things interesting throughout award season and it was impossible to predict what she would wear next. Elizabeth Saltzman is behind this bold style journey and I love everything about this candy pink cover in the Swingers diner. Lena Waithe is changing the game as her Vanity Fair cover story informs us, but so is new VF Editor-in-Chief, Radhika Jones. I screamed with joy when I first saw this image because it was such a surprise. Not because Lena Waithe doesn’t deserve it (she does), but because this is a surprise for a magazine like VF (which I end up buying pretty much every month, even after I didn’t renew my subscription), which featured Jennifer Lawrence last month and Alec Baldwin for the same cover last year.

I also love that style wise they haven’t tried to put Waithe in an ensemble that isn’t her. This is a beautiful cover and I cannot wait to pick it up when it hits newsstands March 29. Looks like I might re-subscribe too if this is any indication as to what direction Jones is taking the magazine in.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – A Star Wars Special

15 Dec

I have seen The Last Jedi. I love The Last Jedi. I’m not going to go into detail so don’t worry about spoilers here, but there are so many satisfying moments.

Instead, this is an all Star Wars “Out of the Box” and as with The Force Awakens this has been a very fun and sartorially pleasing promotional tour.Kicking off where the premieres began with the huge LA red carpet event. When in a Star Wars movie and you’re the lead, wear stars. Daisy Ridley does just this in a sparkly sequin Monse.A stunning Vogue cover last week, a very fun and super sexy Halpern frock at the Last Jedi premiere for Lupita Nyong’o this week. This is part underwater sea goddess, part festive feeling with all those sequins. Also causing me to use all the flames and heart eyes emojis is Laura Dern, wearing lace Vivienne Westwood. When it is your first major red carpet event for the HUGE movie you are in go big. Kelly Marie Tran did just this custom Thai Nguyen Atelier. From her first appearance at a Star Wars event she has made a strong style impact. This is beyond adorable.John Boyega gives great turtleneck paired with a suit, Gwendoline Christie’s silver Gucci is a stunner and Domhnall Gleeson just makes me feel things.

And there is this, which gets even better the more I watch it.Now to London, where it is was really, really cold and Kelly Marie Tran sensibly opted for long sleeves and whole lot of fabric in Bibhu Mohapatra. And I love how happy she looks here.  Caption this.

Photographer Jason Bell took a series of portraits of the cast for British Vogue in their premiere getup and Oscar Isaac is giving off so much Old Hollywood style. Super smoldering.

Bell also took the super steamy Crown photos including the one that is currently my phone lock screen image

This cast really seems to like each other a lot and at a London photocall we get this Boyega/Ridley/Hamill treat. Great Mulger ladysuit action from Daisy Ridley.

And while we’re on the ladysuit love train; Laura Dern crushing it back in New York and in the snow.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

8 Dec

This column has recently turned into more than just the ‘Look of the Week’ and is part rundown of my week in pop culture. There are of course still plenty of sartorial moments featured; this time of year is always a very fun and busy one. Award season continues, the Last Jedi press tour is in full swing and magazine covers continue to deliver.

This week I wrote about the shift in season between summer and winter on Broad City including where to get similar (and affordable) outfits. This was the first year I partook in the Fug Girls ‘Guess the Vogue cover star game’ and I got 2/12—Zendaya and Daisy Ridley—a pretty bad strike rate. I did not guess Lupita Nyong’o, but I do love this cover shot. And I am more than impressed with Lupita’s balancing act in that dress.

I cannot wait to see the Gina Rodriguez article and Rodriguez’s Instagram Stories are super inspiring on the fitness front. Yes I tried the walking up the wall/push ups thing. No it did not go well. Sarah Paulson in sequins is alwayswinning combination, this cover of The Edit featuring a dress by Ashish continues this trend. The all-red editorial is a stunner and I was particularly taken by this quote from Paulson

“I am a woman of a certain age who chose not to have children, and who has made my career my priority. I am the captain of my own ship, and I’ve never looked to anyone else to validate that, or tell me it’s okay.”

I am very much looking forward to seeing Paulson alongside other TV faves in The Post.Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now less than a week away. The promo tour continues and pretty much all of the core cast appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last Friday. Daisy Ridley has turned the backstage area into her own personal catwalk and looks stunning in Carolina Herrera and super sparkly Louboutins—giving me wedding shoe flashbacks.

The talk show preamble often features the outfit a guest is going to wear on the show. Something that Star Wars newbie Kelly Marie Tran wasn’t aware of.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BcMOM1-F9CT/?taken-by=kellymarietran

This is a delightful post (and for the record I think her casual outfit is great). Also to be filed under delightful; at the Last Jedi press conference Oscar Isaac wore a cardigan that I now want to live in. And keeping it bright in a color block jacket is John Boyega. At the GQ ‘Men of the Year’ party the Call Me By Your Name team all scrub up well. Michael Stuhlbarg looks like the dad of the group—which makes sense— and director Luca Guadagnino has toned it down from the Gotham Awards, but still has a fun collar detail. What I love is that Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet are both going for plaid in very different ways. How very Oliver and Elio of them.

You can read my take on the portrayal of sexual fluidity in CMBYN here. This award season has been lacking the Ruth Negga factor, so it was wonderful to see her at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards looking a dream in red Valentino.Another TV Ate My Wardrobe fave, Cush Jumbo looks suitably festive in Michael Kors. I cannot wait for The Good Fight to come back.Showing how to do formal sweater is Winnie Harlow in Brandon Maxwell. Considering I am currently wrapped in knitwear, this is something I very much appreciate. Harlow is going full ‘Jolie Leg’ but so would I if my shoes were that sparkly. What better way to spend breakfast than the Hollywood Reporter’s 2017 Women In Entertainment. Kathryn Hahn ticks all the fabulous ladysuit boxes, even if she has gone for beige pumps.  This is more like it in the shoe department! And Gillian Jacobs has also gone for the ladysuit option with a pink Sandro ensemble.A fun game of ‘Is this Dior?’ on Jennifer Lawrence is usually determined by how much I like it. If it is a hit then the answer is usually no. And in this case that instinct is spot on, as this dreamy frock is Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini.Yara Shahidi is also wearing Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini in a dress that I would definitely spill my coffee and eggs down, but also looks lovely on the soon to be Grown-ish star.More striking white, This is Us fave Susan Kelechi Watson gives great peplum in Zeena Zaki.Gabrielle Union in a pair of pants that look a little like the French Connection pair I wore non-stop in 2000 (until they were ruined with an accidental cigarette burn of my own making) at the Refinery29 29Rooms Los Angeles: Turn It Into Art Opening Night.

This New York Times profile of Union, her book and doing a promotional tour of this raw, personal material over the last couple of months is a must read. It left me in tears and the last two months has been intense. But Union has been talking about this long before the #metoo movement and she discusses this in the profile. And now for the Time ‘Person of the Year’ issue. As I mentioned above the last couple of months have been rough. This reckoning has been coming for a long time, it is obviously a good thing that these horrific acts are coming to light and the women and men that have come forward are honored in this way. This cover is incredibly striking.

There has been much debate about Taylor Swift’s placement and I think she should definitely have been included in the piece, but someone like Kesha (if they wanted a pop person in that place) would have been a better choice for the front cover. But also I get that Time wants to sell magazines.Summing up 2017 in one expression from Nicole Kidman; the Great Performers issue of New York Times Magazine is always amazing. This year is no exception.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

1 Dec

The Gotham Awards dominates the sartorial coverage this week with Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird taking home some of the big prizes in both the style and film stakes. There are lots of looks to drool over. I also wrote my first piece for Bustle about Call Me By Your Name and you can read it here.

A big style theme of the week is velvet and the red color spectrum. Dive in below for a lot of both.Zoe Kazan is looking at Timothée Chalamet, how I imagine I would look at Timothée Chalamet at the Gotham Awards, where he picked up Breakthrough Actor.

Every year there is an actor who really brings it suit wise, sometimes it is a kid (see Jacob Tremblay), often it is an Ilaria Urbinati client (see Rami Malek/Riz Ahmed/Donald Glover) and now it looks like Chalamet could be set to join them. Velvet is a good place to start and this Berluit Fall suit is a cracking addition. Velvet is very on trend as you will see as you scroll through. Kazan looks delightful as ever. The Gotham Awards delivered on the fun pairings and this photo is hilarious. Armie Hammer scrubs up well, as always and Saoirse Ronan looks resplendent in Rodarte. This is surely one of many gongs she will be picking up for Lady Bird.Greta Gerwig is pretty in pink in Gucci and I am so happy with all the love she is getting. The year started off with 20th Century Women and the fact it is ending with all these nominations is amazing. More Call Me By Your Name/Big Sick hangouts and more velvet dreams. Critic Tomris Laffly caught the moment Chalamet and Kumail Nanjiani hugged it out while comparing their similar styling choices.

Plus, the couple that wears velvet together stays together and Emily V. Gordon is crushing it. Leopard print pumps are the perfect shoe choice. Meanwhile, CMBYN director Luca Guadagnino takes it to the next level with his jacket and shirt combo. I just found out that Dominique Fishback is playing Kenya in The Hate U Give (one of the best books I have read this year) and I can’t think of a better person to plat this part. Fishback crushed it recently in The Deuce and she was equally magnetic in Show Me a Hero.

I don’t always love a mullet hem, but this metallic Zac Posen frock looks stunning on her. Mudbound director Dee Rees continues to give great coats and she is also wearing the color that is dominating this week’s column. I plan on finally watching this movie at the weekend. At the AOL Build series for Mr. Roosevelt, Noël Wells looks cute af in an outfit I would definitely wear. In fact I have a very similar turtleneck. With just two weeks to go until The Last Jedi opens, the Star Wars cast is beginning to make late night appearances. Here is Daisy Ridley on The Tonight Show in an Ulla Johnson Tess jumpsuit and yep, it is velvet.  A simple, but striking outfit and no doubt Ridley will be making more appearances on here before 2017 is over. What’s that? You want more velvet?! Well, InStyle does not disappoint and neither does Zendaya in matching turquoise horse print.

Addressing the current onslaught of sexual harassment and assault allegations that has besieged Hollywood, Zendaya offers up a thoughtful point about those who have opened up about their horrific experiences:

“The bravery of the women who came forward is a huge step toward making sure it’s safer for me and other young women who are just coming. I’m at that prime age right now. Twenty-one. Starting off. That’s when people take advantage and abuse their power and do terrible shit. I think it’s definitely a sisterhood.”The second annual ‘Women in TV’ issue from The Edit is here! HBO is very well represented by Evan Rachel Wood, Yvonne Orji and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Network and streaming don’t miss out either thanks to Nicole Richie and Sarah Silverman. This is also a good mix of comedy and drama. The all-black outfits are pretty standard fair for this kind of cover, but each woman looks comfortable and fabulous in their ensemble.

Interviews cover everything from being a producer, diversity, to why it is so good to be working in TV at the moment. Evan Rachel Wood answers the latter rather succinctly and it is a point that is often made:

“I feel like [in film] after 23-ish, you go into this dead zone where you can’t play the little ingénue sexpot anymore, but you’re not quite playing mothers or doctors or lawyers yet. On TV, I see well-rounded female characters, their flaws [and] triumphs.”

TV is great, y’all.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Nov

Some of the big trends dominating the latter half of the year are showcased in this week’s “Out of the Box” and a fun mix of fancy/casual events delivers sartorially. Plus talking the Stranger Things publicity tour, movie premieres and striking magazines editorials. We are so lucky that Michelle Pfeiffer has been having a huge 2017, culminating in Murder on the Orient Express. I am a big Poirot/Agatha Christie adaptation fan so I am cautiously excited about this movie—I really love David Suchet’s Poirot.

But something that does not need to be debated or cautiously excited about is Pfeiffer at the London premiere in a stunning silver Prada gown.
Daisy Ridley is going to be wearing a lot of fancy frocks over the next couple of months and she is kicking things off in glamorous style in jade-green Vivienne Westwood Couture. For more from Ridley scroll to the bottom of this post.Thor: Ragnarok is great and it is the rare Marvel film where you can hear the director’s voice—both literally and figuratively. Here is Taika Waititi hamming it up at a screening of his new movie and this is another case where he’s giving great style. And white denim jackets are not the easiest thing to pull off.It is that time of year when awards start coming thick and fast; the start of a very long season for those actors that might get an Oscar nomination. Allison Janney is one such person and here she is at the third annual Carney Awards starting things low-key, but jazzing it up enough with her choice of jewelry.
Cold-shoulders and deconstructed shirts were the two (terrible) trends of 2017. Now it seems that every sweater, top and dress is finding it necessary to have some kind of lace/tie/ribbon on it. I am not mad about all of it, but I think I might be in a few months time.

Kathryn Hahn at the A Bad Moms Christmas premiere gets the good end of the ribbon deal in Alberta Ferretti.

Jessica Williams mixes two of my fave thing—preppy and twee—in Creatures of Comfort at the opening of The Wing in Soho.  The Stranger Things teens are still everywhere promoting the second season and the boys continue to do the casual thing with aplomb. There has been concern about Millie Bobby Brown’s schedule and any regular reader of Lainey Gossip will be very aware of this. There have been so many child/teen stars that have burned out far too young and hopefully Brown will not be another cautionary tale.

In terms of styling before this promo tour Brown’s look was pretty age appropriate and as the Fug Girls point out it is now veering into the other end of this scale. Here, I think her Giamba outfit is a good mix of high fashion/fun and Sadie Sink’s ensemble is doing it, but without doing the most. Dressing when you are a regular teen is hard enough and I can’t imagine going through this awkward stage with this many eyes on you.  Frances Ha was my favorite film of 2013 and suffice to say I couldn’t be more excited about Lady Bird. There are a lot of Greta Gerwig profiles out this week and I couldn’t be more thrilled; both the New York Magazine and New York Times ones are excellent. The above photo is courtesy of Interview and regular readers will know how much I adore their editorial style.

Gerwig is interviewed by Francis Ford Coppola and it is an insightful conversation about Gerwig’s childhood, influences and process including this gem about the rehearsal process. I also love 20th Century Women so this anecdote really speaks to me. And this gif is a necessary accompaniment to her tale.

[source]

“It wasn’t just working with the lines; it was also a lot of talking and investigation. I would have them all dance together, because when I worked with Mike Mills, he had us do that. I found it useful because it makes you less embarrassed of your body and less embarrassed in front of other people, so I stole that from him.”

The below sentiment also applies to how I pitch. I am so bad at explaining an idea in its initial stage.

“I’ve found that if I can explain it to someone early, it’s going to be terrible. You have to give the hunch time to grow in the dark, because otherwise—let’s say you pitch it to a friend really early—it dies.”Solange shines bright for Glamour as one of their Women of the Year in matching sequined Gucci top/pants and Stuart Weitzman boots. Perfect level of sparkle for this time of year.

The whole essay is super inspiring, but this really resonates:

“There’s such a dated, tired narrative that women are taking a risk by standing up for themselves, writing their own narratives, and having control over their bodies. But I felt so much freedom in speaking my truth. I no longer wanted to stay silent. I didn’t care what I had to lose. I started to weigh what the risks of not telling my truth were versus burning bridges that needed to be burned.”The best cover Entertainment Weekly has done in an age; the colors/clothes/everything about it. Constance Wu and Henry Golding look fabulous. I really need to read this book before the movie comes out. As I mentioned near the top of this week’s “Out of the Box,” Daisy Ridley is going to be everywhere for the next two months—much to my delight—with both Murder on the Orient Express and The Last Jedi. I really love this cover and the whole ’80s direction of this editorial. Also, the interview is conducted by none other than Adam Driver and it is delightful.

Best of the Met Gala 2017: The Americans, Big Little Lies and More

2 May

More Met Gala and for the attendees who went big in honoring Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons head here. That’s not to say the second part of this rundown doesn’t feature strong nods to the theme, which definitely has room for interpretation, but there are definitely fewer ‘out there’ looks.

We do have treats from the casts of Big Little LiesThe Americans and some super handsome dudes in suits among others. Getting the best dressed couple title is Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as they mix things up in custom Rag & Bone. The coat tails twist on the lady suit is giving off strong ringmaster vibes and I am super partial to a kilt; this is how to a couples theme without looking too matchy matchy.

Great smoky eyes on Keri Russell too, which adds to the whole effect.

Not one, but three of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s three best dressed dudes all together and super stylist Ilaria Urbinati is good to us. Rami’s red is Dior (obvs), Riz is in also in Dior and Donald (my fave suit of the three) nods to Comme des Garçon in Burberry.

Now someone needs to cast this trifecta of swoon inducing dudes in a movie together. Please and thank you.Michael B. Jordan is another guy you can rely on to avoid the black tux doldrums and this Ralph Lauren plaid number looks fit for Hannibal, which is another way of me saying I love it.Entering the Big Little Lies portion of this post and Reese Witherspoon is serving up Joan Collins levels of dramatic shoulder in asymmetric Mulger playing with form.Zoë Kravitz knows how to make a mark in a romantic custom Oscar de la Renta gown complete with real roses. This manages to be super modern with a classic twist and Kravitz’s new blonde pixie cut gives this an edge. When you worship at the alter of Laura Dern it is fine to ignore that this is one of the many looks that isn’t really going all in on the theme, but between the cutouts and the polka dot train I am obviously here for this custom Gabriela Hearst.Another floral take and Lupita is radiant in coral Prada. Also appearing on Jessica Chastain’s A+ Met Gala Instagram Stories and with Rihanna in the background a good reminder of the film event we could be enjoying in the future.

And because I love a getting ready BTS.An optical illusion from Elizabeth Banks in custom Michael Kors and I am just as mesmerized by the height of her heels. I would also be pulling this face if I was walking up this many stairs in these shoes. A red carpet best from Lena Dunham in gingham Elizabeth Kennedy with a fabulous silhouette, makeup and hair to boot. She also has a pair of boots beneath the layers of fabric.

As was mentioned on Twitter another theme of this Met Gala was people who have previously lamented about how much they hate this event and yet they’re back for more. Ultimate FOMO I guess. This Chanel is beautiful, but definitely more of an award season frock rather than a Met Gala one. But Brie looks great and she also got caught up in this bathroom moment.

I needed to go the bathroom and ended up famous.

Her face says it all.

Dakota Johnson looks like she’s on a widow revenge mission in custom Gucci and I’m here for it.One final moment of dramatic staircase posing and Daisy Ridley’s custom Oscar de la Renta isn’t quite the out there number I was hoping from her, but she’s working it.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

21 Apr

Bold print and florals dominate this week’s best style moments and despite the grey sky view I’m currently being treated to, it feels good to know spring has sprung. Fashion seems to agree and it is print central here at TV Ate My Wardrobe.

There’s a lot of different projects on the promotion train including smaller indie fare and probably the most anticipated blockbuster of the year. The latter being a franchise that sartorially delivered on its world tour two years ago. Plus all things TV including the premiere of HBO’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and a TV Ate My Wardrobe fave that is appearing on two shows at the moment. Plus a couple of fabulous Time covers and some TV stars at Coachella, because of course. While promoting Colossal – a film I’m very excited for – Anne Hathaway wore this very lovely floral frock to Good Morning America and it didn’t come from a high end store/designer as you might expect. Hathaway explained that she is trying to be more sustainable with her fashion choices and wear vintage when she can; this $15 flea market find is an excellent start. The Star Wars celebration included a panel for The Last Jedi where they unveiled the new stunning teaser poster, a teaser trailer and a new cast member; Kelly Marie Tran is joining the Resistance and will play mechanic Rose.

Because this event was streamed worldwide it meant we got to see just how delightful Tran is and because you know I love good panel attire I was thrilled to see this mix of casual with dressy. A dress that infuses frills and layering in stunning cobalt with stacked sparkly shoes already puts Kelly Marie Tran on the Star Wars promo tour style list.Daisy Ridley is no longer the newcomer and she’s still making daring fashion choices including this block color orange and red Stella McCartney number, which I’m sure shouldn’t work but does. Tony Award winning Hamilton star and long suffering Good Wife ASA, Renée Elise Goldsberry is starring in the HBO movie The Immortal Life as Henrietta Lacks, which airs tomorrow (Saturday 22). At the premiere she looked stunning in bold Rosie Assoulin floral dress and while I’m not wild about the puffy shoulder detail it doesn’t detract from the rest of the ensemble. Great shoe choice too.

Everything about Rose Byrne’s look on Live with Kelly (and on this occasion Jussie) is ideal as she also chats about The Immortal Life as Henrietta Lacks from the polka dots to the lipstick. Also Kelly Ripa frock is hitting all those spring notes and I would very much like it please. Coachella time and scrolling through the endless shorts and bad boot choices there are a couple of outfits that stood out for the right reasons. There’s something a little 80s and couch material about Yara Shahidi’s floral take, but she looks good and my only concern is she might be a little on the toasty side for daytime desert wearing.Sophie Turner leans more edgy in a very festival way and it is working for her and I love a star print tee. Even if I’m having Ross Geller in super tight leather pants concerns for Sophie when she goes to the bathroom because the toilet situation can be perilous at these kind of outdoor events (though probs not for the celebs attending).

More treats from the Elisabeth Moss hangs out in corridors in fabulous clothes series in a stunning green floral Prabal Gurung number.Armie Hammer takes a dip in the Rami Malek shirt box at the Free Fire premiere and it looks great on him. There is also talk of a Man From U.N.C.L.E. sequel and make it happen Hollywood.Carrie Coon is having a moment or rather two moments with The Leftovers and Fargo both returning this week and I am quite prepared to be devastated by her performance as Nora Durst. Giving great short hair and stripe styling for Backstage where she discusses in depth both her stage and screen career. Throw all these Carrie Coon profiles at me.Time’s 100 Most Influential annual issue list was unveiled yesterday and while there are some questionable choices I am instead going to focus on the covers that fill me with joy. Starting with this great Viola Davis shot and the perfect Mary Katrantzou to make her stand out even more. As with the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, Meryl Streep delivers on the Viola Davis testimony she deserves. Riz Ahmed has graced the red carpet Best of lists on numerous occasions recently and this is another case of a fantastic suit; great color palette choice from the Time team. Words by Lin-Manuel Miranda so enthusiasm levels are high. Just like they should be.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

25 Mar

Yes award season is over and yet there is another award show, but we don’t mind because this is a fun one and award season fatigue is easily replaced with sartorial joy. There are more fabulous outfits on display at premieres, play openings, editorials and magazine covers.Maisie WilliamsAt the Empire Awards Maisie Williams continues her run of fun red carpet choices in this sequin Sadie Williams top and mini-skirt and I love everything about this. Including the fact that she did her own her and make-up and to quote Williams on this matter “cos why the fuck not.” Roll on the Game of Thrones season 6 press tour and we’ve got more Maisie Williams below.Daisy Ridley and John BoyegaJohn Boyega and Daisy Ridley continue to charm and delight with their enormous smiles and star presence. As with Maisie Williams both Boyega and Ridley don’t shy away from bold choices on the red carpet and they’re having a good time with these events and what they wear.

The floral element is a nice touch on Boyega’s suit and Daisy Ridley’s Hugo Boss dress is interesting and uses sheer panels in a way that doesn’t make me want to cover my eyes. Incredible sparkly shoes to top things off. Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth OlsonRecently there has been a lot of Tom Hiddleston wearing appropriately snug suits in my life (see The Night Manager and High-Rise for more) and at the I Saw the Light premiere he has opted for a fabulous blue number. Elizabeth Olsen complements his blue in a red Emilio Pucci feather embroidered frock which looks every level of fancy comfy; an ideal combo. Also I seem to recall dating rumors about these two and yep I am here for that.Claire DanesMoving on to a couple who I definitely know are together and Hugh Dancy was there to support wife Claire Danes at the opening night of her new play Dry Powder. While there is nothing super groundbreaking about either outfit – the subtle check on Dancy’s suit is a nice touch – both look great and it has been a while since they graced these pages.Emily Blunt and John KrasinskiMore couple treats as John Krasinski is also in Dry Powder and wife Emily Blunt joined him on the red carpet. All the cape and knit dress points for the pregnant Blunt.

Keri RussellSpeaking of maternity style – Keri Russell appeared in The New York Times crushing it in this casual cool mix of jeans, white blouse and sleeveless coat. And heels (while not as crazy as the Gucci platforms I am still in awe).

In the interview Russell discussed her feelings about Elizabeth referring to her as “my fantasy person” and “Honestly, I relish the kind of mother she is — especially these days when we’re all supposed to be craft-making, cookie-making, have a career, be sexy, have a great body, go to Pilates. She’s not at home making Halloween costumes or inviting her kids’ friends over for cupcakes. It’s totally refreshing.” Holly Taylor InterviewPaige might be causing a whole lot of headaches for her parents on The Americans this week and Holly Taylor is hitting all those devastating emotional beats not letting her mother get away with blaming her for the mess they are in. The styling of Holly Taylor’s Interview editorial is giving me so many Keri Russell vibes thanks to the black jumpsuit styling which her onscreen mother has a penchant for. Also all that amazing hair.

Taylor talks about her Americans audition, college plans, the background in dance that she shares with Russell and how draining it was to film the big reveal scene last season.

Maisie Williams EWThe new double issue of Entertainment Weekly is a Game of Thrones special focusing on the women – A+ pun work there – and the six covers showcase these characters in ways which seem true to who they are and as a bonus they don’t make me cringe. This one of Maisie Williams as Arya Stark shows her looking defiant rather than blinded as we last saw her and hopefully this means she will be reunited with Needle soon.Sophie turnerAll six covers are fabulous and for once I am glad to be a digital subscriber over the print edition as I won’t have to choose which one I get. The thing that makes me happiest about this Sophie Turner cover is she is wearing the badass Sansa costume which we first saw at the end of season 4; is this a sign that Sansa will get her revenge and some power this year?

Instagram delivers on the charming and delightful this week including The Good Wife nearing its end, flashing back to award and promotional tour favorites and an array of shows in production right now.

One of the best things about this recent awards cycle was everything Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay and thanks to a Room promotional tour in Japan we’re being gifted more of this adorable. Can they promote this movie for forever, please?

To be filed under ‘co-stars supporting co-stars’ and the extra special Teen TV variety – the ultimate.

Last week, Holly Taylor from The Americans took over the Yahoo TV Instagram account to celebrate the return of The Americans including some face swapping that might induce nightmares. Instead we are going for all the sweater feels.

The Good Wife only has a few more episodes to shoot which means an uptick in set photos (which is why I’m posting two this week). This is from episode 20 and shows just how close they film to airing; we only just had episode 17.

And now episode 21 otherwise known as the penultimate episode. *sob* Yes I know I said it was time for the show to be done, but I am still very sad it will soon be over.

The introduction of Lucca Quinn has been one of the main highlights of this final Good Wife season and hopefully a decent project will snap Cush Jumbo up when this is all over.

A super snazzy touch of floral and John Boyega continues to impress with his suit game.

Posing up a storm with Stars Wars co-star in the Empire photobooth (after they both took home awards). I am already excited for the next Star Wars promo tour.

This is Lucy Liu’s third time behind the camera on Elementary and she looks all kinds of relaxed here. Somewhat related but I’m still not quite over the level of cute coming from this photo of Jonny Lee Miller with Liu’s son.

And while we’re on the subject of adorable set moments – this one from Jane the Virgin is pretty great.

Barry’s all caught on The Flash and after this mini break it is good to have him back.

Important Zoo costume news – the Henley stays! Good view on every level.

More from the UnREAL set and I am really excited for the return of this show. And that Rachel now has a pair of leather pants.

So it is another day of listening to the Cruel Intentions soundtrack as a result of a SMG post. This is not a bad thing and the TV version has a lot to live up to on the music front.

And also a hankering to rewatch Master of None even though there are other Netflix shows I haven’t started yet.

Best of the 2016 Oscars Red Carpet: Sparkle and Pattern

29 Feb

Welcome to the final hurrah of awards season (well there are also still Vanity Fair after party photos to deal with) and after months of campaigning and many other red carpets the Oscars are here. Now I’m not going to say I was totally disappointed, underwhelmed perhaps as overall the Golden Globes and maybe even the SAGs had more standout dress moments. There was a lot to love this year, but not a whole lot that had that Oscar WOAH. No contenders to the Michelle Williams in yellow Vera Wang from 10 years ago.

There are still plenty of dresses to peruse and welcome to part 1 of our highlights – kicking off with all the sparkly delights.Saoirse RonanSaoirse Ronan delivered the first WOW reaction of the night in emerald Calvin Klein Collection and it is giving me Keira Knightley Atonement dress feelings with a 1970s sequin twist. That is a very good thing.Naomi Watts and Liev SchreiberMore sequins and a gown that looks just as stunning in motion as it does in these posed photos; Naomi Watts is onto a winner in Armani Privé and Liev Schreiber is doing the classic tux thing (for dudes in exciting suits check out the style highlights from the Independent Spirit Awards).Margot RobbiePlunging gold snakeskin for Margot Robbie and this is another dress that is giving off so many 1970s vibes and in not so shocking news I am very much here for this decade’s strong influence.Sandy PowellSound the #LadySuitWatch2016 klaxon and costume designer Sandy Powell (no E! this is not Tilda) does not disappoint in a year when she has been nominated not once, but twice (for Carol and Cinderella – see photos from a Cinderella exhibit here). Amy PoehlerWhen I first saw Amy Poehler in Andrew Gn I snap judgement declared this my favorite ever red carpet look for her and the morning after I still feel the same. Love the embroidery and the drama. Plus a caped sleeve is always going to hit my sweet spot.Alicia VikanderIt has been a season of big hitters for the always fashion forward and adventurous Alicia Vikander so I was a little disappointed with what Louis Vuitton made for her very big night. Don’t get me wrong it is a lovely gown (bubble hem aside), but it’s not the triumphant levels we saw at the SAGs. I feel greedy for wanting more.

I am glad she won (even if it should have been for Ex-Machina) and I’m really looking forward to seeing what she does both on screen and on the red carpet in the not too distant future. Shout-out to the woman in silver sequins in the background as she looks fabulous.Daisy RidleyAnother recent red carpet big hitter and Daisy Ridley crushed the Star Wars press tour on every level. Chanel Couture is a great step although I am not in love with the sheer trim, but Ridley is certainly working the awkward length and gets those all important lipstick points. John Legend and Chrissy TeiganChrissy Teigen posted a photo on Instagram of final Oscar prep which included getting sewn into her dress – standard fancy gown procedure which always has me wondering about trips to the bathroom – and she looks incredible in rose embroidered Marchesa. John Legend as always scrubs up very well.Juliet RylanceAnother incredible embroidered creation and Juliet Rylance’s Temperley London frock gives off a very fresh vibe. Rylance was there with her father Mark Rylance and his Best Supporting Actor speech was one of my favorites from the night. Such grace and humility. Plus that wonderful accent. Now I am also wondering whether we will get any more of The Knick as I have so many hopes for Cornelia.

Stay tuned for part 2 of our Oscar coverage.
