Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Mar

Puppies, ladysuits and the Stylist issue of The Hollywood Reporter are all on the “Out of the Box” menu this week. The latter delivers the best roundtable conversation I have seen in a while and you can also watch this below. Sound the ladysuit klaxon! Daisy Ridley looks stunning in a Sara Battaglia Pre-Fall 2018 tuxedo at the Rakuten Empire Film Awards. Full Marlene Dietrich vibes. Every time I see Vanessa Kirby out of her Princess Margaret garb it takes me a moment to realize who she is. But she is just as glamorous in 2018 as she is in 1950s attire, including this super moody floral Erdem ensemble. A stunning Jasper Conran A/W ’18 two-tone blue dress worn by Simona Brown at the Rakuten Empire Film Awards. Love the choice of bag to make this outfit pop even more.

I did a whole post yesterday about how much fun this Americans press tour has been so far. The caped jacket as worn by Keri Russell at the Washington D.C. premiere is another distinct look and this is one of the many lipsticks I have been coveting. Makeup artist Tina Turnbow always delivers on the BTS and beauty delights. There were some very special plus ones at an Isle of Dogs screening this week and Jeff Goldblum has coordinated his shoes with his pup. Tilda Swinton always gives fabulous and interesting red carpet. The good doggo obviously draws focus, but this is a fabulous jacket.

While I’m on the subject of Isle of Dogs; I am a Wes Anderson fan and I am looking forward to this film, but this review by Justin Chang gave me pause (and reinforced some of my concerns from aspects of the trailer). This is why diversity in film criticism is so important.

Regular readers will know how much I love a roundtable, especiallyHollywood Reporter roundtable. So I am thrilled that the annual Stylists issue also includes the first ever stylist roundtable featuring Law Roach (Zendaya, Mary J. Blige) Jeanne Yang (Kumail Nanjiani), Jason Bolden (Ava DuVernay), Tara Swennen (Allison Janney) and a woman I have mentioned countless times on here, particularly for menswear; Ilaria Urbinati (Armie Hammer, Donald Glover, Rami Malek).

This is a fascinating conversation that gets to the heart of the work a stylist does during award season and beyond. It includes having to negotiate with brands depending on who the client is, which stylist had two days to find a dress before the Oscars and how they sourced that many black ensembles for this year’s Golden Globes. A fascinating and enlightening watch that includes a range of opinions and processes when approaching this job.The Hollywood Stylist issue of The Hollywood Reporter is one of my most anticipated—see also the Emmy actress issues and the Beauty issue—and the fact that it comes just after award season means we get to celebrate the people behind the looks we have been drooling over. The hard work deserves attention.

The Black Panther press tour is going to be long remembered for how incredible it was from both a menswear and gown POV. Chadwick Boseman delivered time after time in an array of striking blazers. He appears on the front cover with stylist Ashley Weston in another standout blazer, Weston bounces off this sartorial choice in delicate florals. While I didn’t love Saoirse Ronan’s Oscar frock, she kept things interesting throughout award season and it was impossible to predict what she would wear next. Elizabeth Saltzman is behind this bold style journey and I love everything about this candy pink cover in the Swingers diner. Lena Waithe is changing the game as her Vanity Fair cover story informs us, but so is new VF Editor-in-Chief, Radhika Jones. I screamed with joy when I first saw this image because it was such a surprise. Not because Lena Waithe doesn’t deserve it (she does), but because this is a surprise for a magazine like VF (which I end up buying pretty much every month, even after I didn’t renew my subscription), which featured Jennifer Lawrence last month and Alec Baldwin for the same cover last year.

I also love that style wise they haven’t tried to put Waithe in an ensemble that isn’t her. This is a beautiful cover and I cannot wait to pick it up when it hits newsstands March 29. Looks like I might re-subscribe too if this is any indication as to what direction Jones is taking the magazine in.

Best of the Met Gala 2017: The Americans, Big Little Lies and More

2 May

More Met Gala and for the attendees who went big in honoring Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons head here. That’s not to say the second part of this rundown doesn’t feature strong nods to the theme, which definitely has room for interpretation, but there are definitely fewer ‘out there’ looks.

We do have treats from the casts of Big Little LiesThe Americans and some super handsome dudes in suits among others. Getting the best dressed couple title is Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as they mix things up in custom Rag & Bone. The coat tails twist on the lady suit is giving off strong ringmaster vibes and I am super partial to a kilt; this is how to a couples theme without looking too matchy matchy.

Great smoky eyes on Keri Russell too, which adds to the whole effect.

Not one, but three of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s three best dressed dudes all together and super stylist Ilaria Urbinati is good to us. Rami’s red is Dior (obvs), Riz is in also in Dior and Donald (my fave suit of the three) nods to Comme des Garçon in Burberry.

Now someone needs to cast this trifecta of swoon inducing dudes in a movie together. Please and thank you.Michael B. Jordan is another guy you can rely on to avoid the black tux doldrums and this Ralph Lauren plaid number looks fit for Hannibal, which is another way of me saying I love it.Entering the Big Little Lies portion of this post and Reese Witherspoon is serving up Joan Collins levels of dramatic shoulder in asymmetric Mulger playing with form.Zoë Kravitz knows how to make a mark in a romantic custom Oscar de la Renta gown complete with real roses. This manages to be super modern with a classic twist and Kravitz’s new blonde pixie cut gives this an edge. When you worship at the alter of Laura Dern it is fine to ignore that this is one of the many looks that isn’t really going all in on the theme, but between the cutouts and the polka dot train I am obviously here for this custom Gabriela Hearst.Another floral take and Lupita is radiant in coral Prada. Also appearing on Jessica Chastain’s A+ Met Gala Instagram Stories and with Rihanna in the background a good reminder of the film event we could be enjoying in the future.

And because I love a getting ready BTS.An optical illusion from Elizabeth Banks in custom Michael Kors and I am just as mesmerized by the height of her heels. I would also be pulling this face if I was walking up this many stairs in these shoes. A red carpet best from Lena Dunham in gingham Elizabeth Kennedy with a fabulous silhouette, makeup and hair to boot. She also has a pair of boots beneath the layers of fabric.

As was mentioned on Twitter another theme of this Met Gala was people who have previously lamented about how much they hate this event and yet they’re back for more. Ultimate FOMO I guess. This Chanel is beautiful, but definitely more of an award season frock rather than a Met Gala one. But Brie looks great and she also got caught up in this bathroom moment.

I needed to go the bathroom and ended up famous.

A post shared by Brie (@brielarson) on

Her face says it all.

Dakota Johnson looks like she’s on a widow revenge mission in custom Gucci and I’m here for it.One final moment of dramatic staircase posing and Daisy Ridley’s custom Oscar de la Renta isn’t quite the out there number I was hoping from her, but she’s working it.

Stranger Things kids are in big demand and the height difference here just made me laugh a lot.

I also appreciate the fact that actors will freak out over other actors. Also still so here for Henry Jennings in a turtleneck.

Chris Geere also demonstrating good internal freak out here.

Maisie Williams didn’t win, but she did get an edible Emmy. Sounds pretty great to me.

Lots of getting ready Emmy stories including Keri Russell’s make-up routine. Her eyebrows in this shot are giving me inspiration for the big day on Saturday.

Yara Shahidi was one of our best dressed over the weekend and she switched things up after the awards giving a detailed photo diary of her Emmy night for Elle.

Constance Zimmer got a bold blunt bob on Emmy day and it looks fabulous against her super pink frock.

Instagram delivers on the TV style front, film festival glamour and on set singing this week. Plus find out some intimate You’re the Worst information and the usual amount of sweater and lipstick coveting.

The Leftovers is still shooting its final season out in Australia and I am glad to see Justin Theroux will be sporting his beard throughout. Liv Tyler captures him here working the leopard print in the hair and makeup trailer.

It has been a bit of a Leftovers watching week as I got the second season for my birthday and I wrote about Kevin’s karaoke here.

The kids from Stranger Things crushed their appearance on The Tonight Show and Questlove captures some of the backstage madness in this group selfie.

Still no details about who Matthew Rhys is playing on Girls but here he is shooting a scene with Lena Dunham, beard and all.

Everyday is awards season #emmysfittings

A post shared by Ilaria Urbinati (@ilariaurbinati) on

The search for the perfect Emmy dress continues and I wonder if we will see any of these on the red carpet come September 18.

I can only see half this sweater, but I know I love it.

You’re the Worst returned last week with a fabulous episode and the cast took over the Backstage Instagram. There’s plenty of behind the scenes videos including Chris Geere showing off a modesty pouch/cock sock. He definitely had to wear one in the season premiere.

Standard lipstick and sunglasses envy.

Chris Geere was also understandably excited to make his talk show debut on The Late Show.

One of my favorite costume designers with one of my favorite actresses. Looking forward to seeing what this pairing brings.

Now for one of my makeup artist faves with another Orange is the New Black stars and this series of photos of Natasha Lyonne are fantastic.

The iZombie set continues to deliver on the fun and the songs.

Greg Williams delivers once again on intimate photographs from the Venice Film Festival and here are a few of my favorites. Starting with Jake getting ready, just because.

Getting up close with super couple Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber. Luckily this dress doesn’t require some awkward lying down.

When in Venice you’ve got to have a boat shot. For more from Greg Williams check out his portraits from the festival at Vanity Fair.

Lots of Emmy prep this week including dress choosing, shoes I want to see on the red carpet and hitting the campaign trail. Plus fun guest stars, going back to work with Master of None and our weekly updates from the sets of You’re the WorstJane the Virgin and iZombie.

It seems like a good sign that Aziz Ansari has not rushed making season 2 of Master of None. And that they will be shooting in Italy. Once again I am going to want to eat all the pasta.

Emmy campaigning continues and Deadline has another interview to be savored. This time it is with Tatiana Maslany and the above quote and series of images is a pretty good example of why we heart Maslany hard. To read the whole wonderful interview head here.

A different form of Emmy prep and Constance Zimmer gives a sneak peek into the what dress to wear dilemma.

I would love it if someone wears these really fun Gucci heels to the Emmys. Far better than anything in the beige range.

Also on the Emmy trail (as well as promoting S2 of Mr Robot – here is my latest Mr Robot costuming piece) is Rami Malek and on The Late Show he took his first Instagram photo. Leaning in completely with a selfie stick shot.

Bonus video of this moment/Rami demonstrating his loveliness.

Food issues on the set of iZombie.

I would say this is a selfie success.

Everything about the look on the kid (or one of the kids) who plays baby Mateo on Jane the Virgin is precious.

Fall TV season is almost here and this means lots of Insta reminders (which I am so grateful for).

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

18 May

Last week, just as I went to start writing “Behind the Insta-Scenes” my internet speed started to lag; I tried to watch the new Orange is the New Black promo and the blurry quality suggested some kind of wifi issue. And then my router stopped working. In happy news a replacement was quickly dispatched and I am up and running once again (no more setting up camp in my friend’s front room). So long story short is that some of this week’s Instagram round up includes some pictures that were intended for last week.

There’s Cannes glamour (and jet lag), the emotional Jane the Virgin season 2 finale and much more.

Kicking off with Tatiana Maslany in classic Breton stripes and a not so classic Cannes pose. Excellent sneaker game too.

This might be more of what you were expecting from Cannes Instagram and Greg Williams is one of my favorite photographers on Insta; part of this is down to the intimate quality of the shots he gets in crowed places and this one of Caitriona Balfe is stunning.

Mads continues to crush it as one of the jury members and excellent suit wearer. Here hanging out with fellow excellent suit wearer Clive Owen.

One more from Greg Williams and Adam Driver looking cool as fuck.

Mark Mann is another excellent photographer to follow on Insta and here he’s captured Chloë Sevigny’s on point Chanel bag.

Emilia Clarke finds Jon Snow on the newsstand and lists off some very timely political hashtags to boot. Nice to see Kyle Chandler on the cover of Men’s Journal in the background there.

Jason Momoa has very strong positive feelings about the most recent episode of Game of Thrones hitting that ‘co-stars who care about each other’ sweet spot of mine.

Lots of emotions going on after watching the Jane the Virgin season 2 finale. Most involved some form of crying. Also laughing with a dash of yelling “DON’T DO IT” at my screen.

Rogelio’s third best friend gets in on the set photo shenanigans.

I did happen to see this before I watched the episode so I knew there would be some Rose related twist, but I did not see this one coming even with their matching outfits above. I am very happy to have Bridget Regan back even if the thing that she did ends up sticking (I don’t think it will).

Another recent TV wedding that made me sob my eyes out and Hannah Simone’s dress is also stunning even if it no longer lights up.

One of last week’s intended picks and I love this collection of Mindy’s favorite season 4 looks. My personal fave is the very 70s looking patterned pussy bow collar blouse and pants with the plunging party dress as a runner up.

Another one from last week and Allison Williams and Marnie are becoming one on the clothing front.

Ending this week on Channing Tatum’s butt because what better way to celebrate the return of my wifi than this.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 May

The busiest red carpet week since award season was over with the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday and the Met Gala extravaganza on Monday. There are still plenty of other events delivering on the sartorial front with the Tony Awards ‘Meet the Nominees’ press junket, a Netflix Jessica Jones screening and other outings. Plus a fun game of ‘What scenario does Sam Heughan’s Interview editorial make you think of?’Michelle WilliamsMichelle Williams looks cute and chic in a Louis Vuitton (of course) black number at the Tony nominee press shindig; in not shocking news I am obsessing over her embellished collar. Michelle wasn’t included in my Met roundup (I liked the look, but not for the Gala) which was a super hard choice because I really loved the super chunky boots all the LV ladies wore; I would maybe switch out her black pumps here for those boots. Lupita Nyong'oWhile I’m on the subject of shoes; Lupita Nyong’o in flats makes me so happy (because I do adore a flat) and she looks incredibly fresh in a peach lace crop top and skirt. Plus on Instagram, Lupita gives a close up shot of the Tony nominee pin that is the accessory of this celebration.Danielle BrooksA pure moment of joy from Danielle Brooks and I am excited that Taystee will be back in my life next month (June 17). Plus stripes and leather pleats are very much in my fashion wheelhouse so excellent daytime event outfit choice. Krysten RitterKrysten Ritter goes all in on the crimson theme in Altuzarra and bold lip color. Gold spiky Louboutins and a Jimmy Choo clutch finish off a fabulous look courtesy of TV Ate My Wardrobe stylist fave Ilaria Urbinati. Racheal TaylorAlso at the Jessica Jones FYC screening is the other half of one of the best lady friendships on TV right now and Rachael Taylor’s Dion Lee dress looks perfect for swishing in. And for the whole cast hanging out check out this week’s “Behind the Insta-Scenes.”Rachel McAdamsApparently all I need to like sheer is equal amounts of wine color velvet to break it up and a fantastic velvet collar to boot. Rachel McAdams looks great at the Sonic Sea screening and this is such a good hair length on her.

Trench coats and particularly Burberry trenches are my weakness and Claire Danes in a patterned number from Burberry is ticking SO many boxes.

Sam HeughanInterview is on a roll with the TV dudes at the moment and this Sam Heughan photo shoot led to a very fun conversation on Twitter regarding what kind of character you get from the Henley/neckerchief wearing attire above. The interview is also fun and Heughan gives off so many delightful vibes.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

4 May

Continuing on from yesterday’s Met Gala highlights we’ve got some getting ready and Gala hangout offerings. Plus more from the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner and the Girls ladies get back to work for their final season.

Still the dress moment of the evening and it is worth seeing Claire Danes in all her glowing glory once again.

And here it is in the early stages.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BE7dmktvNqG/?taken-by=willowsmith

I have so many questions about the bathroom situation considering the size/constricted nature of some of the gowns (going short seems like a wise choice) and as somehow who has talked about how much they love the use of bathrooms particularly in teen shows, I am so here for this.

As with this Lady Gaga in the background facial expression I am also obsessed with what Jemima Kirke is thinking in this moment.

This was another favorite look of the night and Danai Gurira is a spectacular force on the red carpet, as Michonne on The Walking Dead and as a writer. There is another reason for Gurira to celebrate this week as her play Eclipsed received six Tony nominations including writing and for best play.

One thing I love about Instagram and fashion posts is the detail you get to appreciate that wouldn’t normally come across in red carpet shots. Case in point the parts of SJP’s Hamilton inspired look.

Best of the 2016 Met Gala: Everything Else

3 May

Continuing our rundown of the best of the 2016 Met Gala and the ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology’ theme. Part 1 focused on all the sparkly and shining looks, whereas Part 2 is pretty much a smorgasbord of tech/futurism interpretations including color, white, pattern and some very handsome dudes.Zoe SaldanaZoe Saldana’s feather train stunner from Dolce & Gabbana is a show stopping moment. Katy PerryAlso serving up high drama is Katy Perry in gold embellished Prada with some added tech from the Tamagotchi she has hanging from her belt. Let’s hope she remembered to feed it while she as partying.
Danai Gurira
Danai Gurira is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite and she continues her sartorial hot streak in a striking white Giambattista Valli gown.Karlie KlossWe’ve got a before and after from Karlie Kloss with a two-part Brandon Maxwell starting with a demure capelet that I am giving so many heart eye emojis to.Karlie Kloss (capelet off)To this cutout stunner. It even looks like Kloss has switched out her clutch for both versions. Same fantastic red lipstick for both.

Update!

This ensemble got another dramatic style change via a pair of scissors and some booze (thanks to Sophie for the heads up).

Allison WilliamsMore red lip color excellence and cutouts from Allison Williams in a stunning floral Peter Pilotto gown. Naomie HarrisAnother Naomie in Burberry, but this is a very different interpretation to the theme and the detail of Naomie Harris’ gown is mesmerizing. Amandla StenbergMore #LadySuitWatch2016 and Amandla Stenberg’s Calvin Klein ensemble is made complete by what Amandla herself calls ‘Afro Futurism.’ Seriously excellent accessorizing and keeping with the theme.Beyonce KnowlesBeyoncé takes a brief break from her ‘Formation’ tour and general domination of everything music at the moment to slay in latex Givenchy. Jessica ChastainSome looks are harder to get the theme than others. Case in point – Jessica Chastain’s peacock blue Prada, but this is a stunning color on her so I’ll let it slide.SJPSarah Jessica Parker tends to go big at the Met Gala and this year she’s decided to go in a whole other direction with a Hamilton inspired take in Monse (and SJP Collection shoes, obvs) and I guess I have to applaud the audacity to go for something entirely different. Plus Andy Cohen looks like he is having fun here.Rami MalekNow onto the solo guys and stylist Ilaria Urbinati continues to dominate in all things fabulous menswear injecting some color with Rami Malek in Dior.Tom HiddlestonAnd going for a much more traditional look for Tom Hiddleston in Ralph Lauren; Urbinati definitely knows how to pick the perfect suit.Idris ElbaEnding this Met Gala rundown with so much handsome and the event co-chair; Idris Elba crushes it in tailored to perfection Tom Ford.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

22 Apr

It is an all Tribeca Film Festival offering this week and TV got in on the action with panels for shows such as Broad CityThe Good Wife and Mr Robot. As with a lot of these events the outfits range from the fancy end to casual cool, which makes for a very fun and varied “Out of the Box.Abbi Jacobson, Ilana Glazer, Kelly RipaThe Broad City panel took place before the ABC morning TV drama and season 2 guest star Kelly Ripa moderated. Ripa is one of my favorite ever Broad City guest stars and not just because my go to gif about pizza is one featuring her. I am very much in favor of this argument and Ripa in this whole debacle because there are certain words that only ever get used about a woman when she has been fucked over.

Completely unrelated to the behind the scenes stuff going on, but her outfit here is really cute. Abbi and Ilana look funky and panel ready with the option to go out after in this attire. Abbi’s shoes are stacked strappy greatness and Ilana’s hair is giving me curl envy. Good Wife panelThe Good Wife is in farewell tour mode and normally I might be bothered by the presence of such a new cast member, but Cush Jumbo’s Lucca Quinn has been one of this seasons highlights from her funky styling to filling in the much needed Alicia friend position. Plus she gives such great side eye. Here at the Good Wife Tribeca panel Jumbo’s Michael Kors frock is my favorite of the three looks, but Julianna Margulies and Matt Czuchry are also killing it in the panel style stakes. Mr RobotRounding things out on the three co-stars posing together front are Mr Robot’s Christian Slater, Carly Chaikin and Rami Malek. Oh and season 2 has a premiere date; Wednesday, July 13 and you can see them discussing the show here.

At the event Carly Chaikin wore something you might see pop up on Elementary as it is very much in the Joan Watson wheelhouse, which I am very much here for and I would very much like a pair of those Aryn Glasser pants. Malek and Slater are both doing their top button thing and this is one cool looking cast.Gillian JacobsRecent “Out of the Box” columns have been awash with color and print, but this week there are quite a few variations on black classic outfits including Gillian Jacobs at the Dean premiere. The ruffled neckline and detailing makes this more than just a run of the mill black dress.
Viola Davis - CustodyAnd Viola Davis puts a cutout spin on this black fit and flare frock at the Custody premiere. Lots of really great strappy sandals and nail polish combinations this week too and I can finally crack out some color for my toes. SJPOn the effortless end of the scale Sarah Jessica Parker does denim with a pair of SJP ‘Echo’ gold booties, long sleeve grey tee and a brown jacket at the #ActuallySheCan film series event.TOm HiddlestonEnding things on a dapper note and Tom Hiddleston has a lot of projects to promote at the moment and he continues to wear suits very well. Hiddleston is another Ilaria Urbinati client and anyone familiar with TV Ate My Wardrobe and award season will know how much I love Urbinati’s work, particularly on the menswear end as she dresses her dudes in suits of all colors. Here Hiddleston is in a brown Dolce & Gabbana while on the High-Rise trail (a movie in which he wears suits well).
