The 2018 Golden Globes Red Carpet Part III

8 Jan

Now to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s third and final rundown of the red carpet. I share my thoughts on the black dress code show of solidarity here and for a menswear twist on women’s awards fashion check out this post.Viola Davis is always a red carpet fave and this occasion is no different. For Vulture, Angelica Jade Bastién wrote about the Best Moments in Black Excellence at the Golden Globes and one such moment is Viola Davis’ afro. Everyone wearing black doesn’t mean twinning all over the place. Instead it lets style personality shine; hair and accessories have power too.

And Davis’ velvet Brandon Maxwell frock is every flame emoji. Such a strong look. Tracee Ellis Ross also knows how to make a statement through what she wears; the hair wrap, Marc Jacobs halter dress, bold red lip and pearl earrings do just this. No I still haven’t seen Lady Bird (much to my dismay), but I did get emotional when both the film and Saoirse Ronan won. Metallic accents are one way to dazzle, so are dramatic shoulders as Ronan proves in Atelier Versace. Greta Gerwig keeps things simple in Oscar de la Renta, jazzing it up with a gold Tiffany necklace.

I love how breathlessly happy this speech is.
Speaking of gold, Kelly Clarkson looks like she has a fabulous bionic arm in custom Christina Siriano. From a gold sleeve to a silver one. Mary J. Blige sparkles in custom Alberta Ferretti gown.Warming my soul is this Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain reunion. We are deep in the sequin and metallic section so at some point I’m gonna run out of ways to say sparkly. Spencer is in glitzy Tadashi Shoji, Chastain wears diamante-embellished Armani Prive. Sarah Paulson loves a sequin. This is no different when the dress code is black and she looks great in Calvin Klein by Appointment. Giving strong Jolie leg is Issa Rae, in smoking hot caped Atelier Prabal Gurung. The emerald necklace is the perfect finishing touch. From the front, Dakota Johnson’s Gucci gown is simple elegance. From the back it reveals a different metallic story. New Gucci continues to deliver. The best Diane Kruger dress in an age and one that makes me think of Daenerys’ season seven look. This isn’t Targaryen, but Prada.Embellished collars are my weakness, Elisabeth Moss in custom Dior is right in my wheelhouse.

Moss quoted directly from Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale words and I’m feeling emotional just typing this (lack of sleep might be a contributing factor).Isabelle Huppert looks like she is wearing armor, sequin Chloe armor. And yep she looks cool as fuck, as per.

Gwendoline Christie often sports armor, but there is nothing metallic her. A ruffled Giles number is just as bold.Cersei would never, but Lena Headey’s gone for subtle romance in Elie Saab and I love this change up. Looking elegant as always, Ava DuVernay in Armani Prive. Also adding glitzy glamour to proceedings. Gillian Anderson icy blonde locks gives her a ’40s movie star vibe, the super caped sleeve Solace London adds a contemporary touch. I bow down to her, always.

I have a feeling Gillian enjoyed Natalie Portman’s Best Director intro. If Caitriona Balfe ever gets stuck in the ’20s she should make sure this flapper-adjacent Chanel Couture number is in her suitcase. Nothing but respect for my presidents.

And their speeches.

All of their speeches.

Best of the Emmys 2017 Style: Awards, Couples and More

18 Sep

Another year, another Emmys and there was not a whole lot to be mad about when it comes to the winners. The same cannot be said for one particular part of the opening.

But, I am here to talk red carpet and for the first post I’m going in reverse with some outfits getting an extra special boost by some hardware, a few moments from the show, feathers, some of our fave couples and some classic black ensembles.

For the best in sparkles and more bold color, head here. No award or speech made me happier than Lena Waithe winning for writing with Aziz Ansari for the Master of None Thanksgiving episode. She is the first black woman to win for writing in a comedy category and in the speech she thanked her LGBTQIA family:

“I see each and every one of you. The things that make us different – those are our superpowers. Every day when you walk out the door and put on your imaginary cape and go out there and conquer the world, because the world would not be as beautiful as it is if we weren’t in it. And for everybody out there that showed us so much love for this episode, thank you for embracing a little Indian boy from South Carolina and a queer black girl from the South Side of Chicago.”

Waithe always gives great ladysuit and this custom Alba is incredible. In other Emmy firsts; Donald Glover is the first black person to win in the comedy directing category. And Ira Madison III has written about why we should we way beyond these diversity milestones in 2017. He also deservedly won in the acting category for Atlanta and was also the best dressed guy of the night in purple Gucci.

Oh and he also gave the best “we’re pregnant” announcement while accepting his second award of the night.

This is also a very special and also super swoony photo. Sterling K. Brown won for Best Actor in a drama and he was giving a great speech until he got cut off. Luckily he got to continue backstage and finish what he started. Looking super suave while doing so. The Handmaid’s Tale was one of the big winners of the night scoring actress, supporting and guest star (which Alexis Bledel won last week). They all look lovely and Elisabeth Moss’ Prabal Gurung has the all important pocket factor.

Ann Dowd gave one of the loveliest speeches and I am also feeling a lot of things thanks to this Justin Theroux’s Instagram post. Yes I am pretending she also won this for The Leftovers.Three Queens getting their rightful standing O.Sparkly tuxedo delights for Rachel Bloom as she performed and she really needs to host this thing. On the red carpet Rachel Bloom wore Gucci and mentioned that she bought it herself. Again, it is very dumb that a lot of designers don’t cater for actresses who are not a sample size. Bloom looks great and she mentioned that she can afford it. And yet it is still a frustrating part of this whole awards circus. There were a lot of feathers this year and while some were sadly a big miss, everything about Zoë Kravitz in Dior is divine. From every single angle of this dress is different and amazing.

And such a great night for Big Little Lies.Keri Russell gives great witchy vibes in ostrich feathered J. Mendel—I do prefer her red J. Mendel look from the previous night—and alas, it was another awardless Emmys for The Americans.

But at least Russell and Matthew Rhys have each other so they have already won, really. Next year. Otherwise that gif from the pilot is getting used again. Tiers of black and white tulle for Mandy Moore in Carolina Herrera and this is where a bold pink lipstick really works wonders.Judith Light, always. They were an Emmy couple fave last year and while Orphan Black missed the nomination window, last year’s winner Tatiana Maslany was on hand to present this year and I love everything about her very classic Reem Acra gown. The blue GLAAD ampersand pin is available here.

2017 Emmy Nomination Acting Wish List

12 Jul

It is almost here! Emmy nomination day is tomorrow (Thursday, July 13) and as has become tradition here is a rundown of who I would love to see getting recognized by the Television Academy.

Every year this wish list keeps on growing and of course there are some repeat names featured. Some previous staples are not featured due to missing the window of eligibility including last year’s Best Actress in a Drama winner, Tatiana Maslany. Maslany is crushing this final season of Orphan Black and while it is unlikely, hopefully memories will last that long so she is included next year.

As with the 2016 wish list, I have split this into drama, mini-series and comedy and includes a mix of locks, first timers and outside bets. In this time of Peak TV there is no time to watch everything so if your fave is not included this might be why.

DramaKeri Russell and Matthew Rhys

Kicking off as I have done each of my previous wish lists with Americans leads Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. The big surprise of last year was not having to use the gif for when they didn’t nominated, as voters came on through by finally recognizing the incredible performances Russell and Rhys give on a weekly basis.

Season 5 of The Americans was more introspective as the action turned inward dealing with the toll of spy life and the things Rhys and Russell do with their faces when there is no/minimal dialogue constantly has me in awe. It wasn’t all doom and gloom for this pair of spies and a surprise wedding delivered a much needed romantic respite. Plus it is good to see a wedding with crowns that doesn’t end in murder. Carrie Coon and Justin Theroux (and the rest of The Leftovers cast)

As with Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, the things Carrie Coon and Justin Theroux do with their face parts is astounding on every level. This final season of The Leftovers delivered the love story aspect I was hoping for and incredible performances we have come to expect from this exceptional cast. It is why this is the third year I have been hoping to see this show get recognized.

Carrie Coon gif at the ready for if/when it doesn’t.Elisabeth Moss and Samira Wiley

Keeping with this theme of the best in face parts acting comes Elisabeth Moss and Samira Wiley in The Handmaid’s Tale. Both women crush it in their abilities to wear a mask and then revealing the real devastating emotion of the character. They are pretty much the reason why I sobbed my way through the finale.

Bonus shout out to Samira Wiley because season 4 of OITNB is the one that voters can nominate and she should def get one for once again turning me into a chin quiver wreck. Also her smile lights up the screen like no other.Sterling K. Brown and Ron Cephas Jones

A lot of TV makes me cry as you can tell from the previous entry, but I’m pretty sure that This is Us wins the prize for episode that made me ugly cry the most. Taking a break from the Pearson family drama to go on a road trip with Randall and his dying father William; “Memphis” showcases the talents of both Sterling K. Brown and Ron Cephas Jones. Christine Baranski

After the disappointing end of The Good Wife I wasn’t sure if I wanted more from this world. And then I remembered how much I love Diane Lockhart and how much fun this show could be without the Alicia baggage (looking at you Peter). And it is fun! Christine Baranski steps into the lead position and of course she is as amazing as Diane’s collection of fancy blazers and statement necklacesClaire Foy and Jared Harris

The Crown gives great Royal family dramz and even though Liz has to maintain a sense of decorum, it is very fun seeing throw stuff at husband when he is being terrible (my alt name for this show is Shut Up, Philip). Foy is great at both aspects and I’m throwing in Jared Harris into the nomination wish list hat for his impact in such a small amount of screen time. And yes he made me sob, which is maybe a prerequisite for a lot of this wish list.

Mini-SeriesBig Little Lies Cast – Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz and Reese Witherspoon

Months after and I am still thinking about Big Little Lies and I would love to see these women dominate the mini-series acting categories.

The scene at the top of the stairs in the finale is another great example of communicating with no words and the bonus Audrey Hepburn getup factor adds something to this scene. Also got to give them props for all the delicious gifs they have given us. Reactions for all scenarios.

BTW – I swear I am not basing this list on how much I use a gif from something, but if I did BLL would win every category. Even ones they can’t be nominated in.Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange

Jessica Lange gets the showier part of the two in Feud and considering a lot of time is dedicated to whether Bette or Joan has the best material; it feels kinda meta talking about these performances in this way. Best dramatic use of a cigarette and sunglasses definitely goes to Susan Sarandon though. Carrie Coon and Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Season 3 of Fargo didn’t really come together until the last few episodes, but Carrie Coon had a great standout moment early in the season when she traveled to California as part of the investigation. She really does give fabulous hotel/motel staying.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead got to show off her survival skills once again (see both BrainDead and 10 Cloverfield Lane for more) and if it wasn’t for these two women I would’ve probably quit this season early on.

ComedyPhoebe Waller-Bridge

One thread running through most of this comedy acting wish list is that the star(s) of the show is also the creator. This adds a personal element to the material, which I guess I am drawn to.

First up Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Fleabag, which delivered on smut, laughs, great lipstick and yep, you guessed it, tears. I am nothing if not consistent. Donald Glover and Zazie Beetz

Atlanta is like nothing else on TV right now and one example of this is the relationship between Earn and Van. Exes who go out for dinner – in an episode which showed just how difficult dinner out can be on a budget – sleep over and are raising a daughter together. The spotlight shines on Zazie Beetz in one of the episodes of this very good season; focusing on Van, her career and a drug test mishap. Issa Rae

Like I said, it is a really great year for the multi-hyphenates and Issa Rae’s Insecure is another strong example of this trend. Also giving another different perspective on relationships and the fuck ups we make along the way and Rae shines in the friendship aspects (even when they’re in a fight), career struggles and why a couch is sometimes much more than somewhere to sit and watch TV.Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe

It might be because I have friends who are in Italy right now so Instagram is awash with great food and architecture pics or that season 2 of Master of None started here, but all I want to do is go to Italy and eat pasta right now.

Season 2 had Aziz Ansari mixing things up including a stellar episode about modern dating and the Thanksgiving spectacular that dealt with Denise’s coming out story based on Lena Waithe’s experiences.

One other standout moment was a scene in “The Dinner Party” that played to the entirety of Marc Almond’s “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” with Dev sitting in the back of the car. It was mesmerizing in ways I didn’t expect. Rachel Bloom

Songs of a different kind and I can’t tell you how often I get “Period Sex” stuck in my head.

Rachel Bloom once again gifts us with so many great tracks including “The Math of Love Triangles,” “So Maternal,” “We Tapped That Ass,” “Remember That We Suffered,” “It Was a Shit Show” and “Friendtopia.” And this season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend shattered the love triangle (miss you, Greg), explored love, friendships and took a deeper dive into Rebecca’s past. Lena Dunham and Matthew Rhys

This season of Girls was definitely the strongest for Lena Dunham from an acting perspective with the scene between Hannah and Adam in the diner as the standout moment. Again everything that had to be said was done with a look and it was subtly moving.

The two-hander with Matthew Rhys was another highlight and the wolfish grin Rhys gives towards the episode after the incident is wonderfully terrifying. It would be great to see Rhys and Carrie Coon getting double nominations.Gina Rodriguez

Yeah I’m gonna talk about crying again and Jane the Virgin has always caused some waterworks on my end. Season 3 took it to new levels and Gina Rodriguez’s reactions to THAT phone call was especially devastating. But the show didn’t wallow in misery and it was good to see Rodriguez getting to play many different things with Jane this season. DeRon Horton

While “Chapter V” (directed by Barry Jenkins) is the Dear White People episode standout, it is DeRon Horton as Lionel who gives the performance of the season. Lionel is super shy and trying to fit in; both things we have seen many times, but he is also coming to terms with his sexuality (including being attracted to his roommate) and he doesn’t feel like a character we have seen on TV before. This is important and Horton’s gives a nuanced take of a young black gay man. Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney

The messiness of Sharon and Rob’s relationship hits new heights in season 3 as they keep secrets from the other, giving both Horgan and Delaney new levels to play with. Yes this is another series that had me sobbing and laughing. Kleenex should probs sponsor this blog.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

15 Jun

Not so much Emmy chat in the sartorial sphere, but awards they keep on coming. The week kicked off with Tony style and as you will see below the Women In Film 2017 Crystal + Lucy Awards also delivered. Plus it is that time of month when magazine covers are unveiled and the July issues are really coming through on that front.

And I also talk about my new Twin Peaks style icon here.
This is such a great summertime cover of Time Out with Jessica Williams as its star and it is impossible not to stare at her eyes. And not just because of the colorful eyeliner. The interview covers a range of topics including her new movie The Incredible Jessica James, her podcast 2 Dope Queens and an all too common scenario with the kind of parts that are available.

“I feel like, oftentimes, a black actress is the guest star in somebody else’s movie. As a minority, you’re like a guest role or something like that.” But with The Incredible Jessica James she “got to be the star of my own story.”

There’s also a fun Buffy the Vampire Slayer interlude and interviewer Inkoo Kang does not agree with Williams’ assertion that Buffy is the best character. For me it is a toss up between Faith and Giles. For The Edit, Zoë Kravitz looks dreamy in white including this Anna Sui gown that could double as a ’70s inspired wedding look.

Big Little Lies has been a huge success and Kravitz also has comedy Rough Night coming out (today in the US, August 25 in the UK) and the next Fantastic Beasts movie. Casting is something that comes up in this piece and even though Kravitz is carving out an interesting and varied career, she discusses just how narrow the thinking can be here:

“When my name is brought up in a casting office, I’m sure the fact that I’m black comes up in discussions. I just read a script in which there were two couples, and one was written as black. When I talked to the directors, they said I should play the wife of the black guy. It’s insane that they still think the black girl needs to be married to the black guy, and everyone else is white. Their thinking is so compartmentalized.”

She also discusses growing up with famous (and cool) parents, as well as her thoughts on fashion and how it “is another medium to express yourself: this is how I feel today, this is the external representation of what’s going on inside.”More dreaminess and Chrissy Teigen’s Marie Claire cover has me wondering where the nearest field is because this looks super appealing. Great choice of dress and this Gucci frock has so much going on – paisley! embroidered insects! – but looks fabulous.

The excerpts from the interview promise the usually candid Teigen and I will be purchasing this issue when it hits newsstands next week (June 20).

Also on a personal note, I used Chrissy Teigen’s Cravings cookbook to make a dinner extravaganza to celebrate 13 years (!) with my guy. I am not at all confident in the kitchen, but I find her style and recipes less terrifying to navigate and it was a tequila soaked success. Thanks, Chrissy!
It is Spider-Man: Homecoming promo time and this means we are going to get a whole lot of Zendaya, much to my delight. Including this stunning Vogue cover and Zendaya commanding all attention in feathered Calvin Klein.

The profile gets to the heart of what makes Zendaya one to watch; from her upbringing to how she reacted to Giuliana Rancic’s ignorant comments about her hair at the Oscars back in 2014 and the demands she made to Disney regarding the show that was originally going to be called Super Awesome Katy (such a bad name). It also touches on just how busy she is and that she’s got at least one more season of K.C. Undercover, including plans to discuss topics such as stop-and-frisk.

And she imparts an important piece of wisdom for fans both young and old:

“A lot of people don’t realize their power. I have so many friends who say yes to everything or feel like they can’t stand up for themselves in a situation. No: You have the power.”Kate McKinnon covers the July issue of Elle and I love everything about this shot from inside the magazine; blending masculine and feminine style. McKinnon is interviewed by Tina Fey and the extract points to the political aspects of her work on SNL including a discussion on doing an impression of real person. This issue hits newsstands Tuesday, 20 June.

Speaking of which and just because SNL isn’t on right now, this doesn’t mean we don’t get a little bit of a Kate McKinnon reaction to this week’s news. It is very funny interview. At an event celebrating Kate McKinnon’s cover and the Women in Comedy issue, Late Night with Seth Meyers writer Amber Ruffin finally gives me a reason to like shoulder holes. This is an excellent patterned jumpsuit and the flats she has paired it with are also a fabulous choice. At the Women In Film 2017 Crystal + Lucy Awards, Tracee Ellis Ross received the The Lucy Award for Excellence in Television and she is posing to perfection with it. The event is sponsored by Max Mara and this cute af ensemble is also by this brand. It manages to be sweet without feeling saccharine and the pink headwrap tops of this great look at an event where all eyes are on women.

In her speech she spoke about her Black-ish role and how it goes against the way black women are typically viewed in pop culture:

“There is work to be done on the representation of black women on television and how women of color are represented in media overall. As black women specifically, we are often objectified, oversexualized and ‘sassified.’ I really like that word, I made it up. To see Bow, my character on Black-ish, as something other than that on a hit mainstream TV show is really important.”Also at this event, Lupita Nyong’o presented her Queen of Katwe director Mira Nair with the Dorothy Arzner Directors Award and Nair also spoke at length about her struggles in this industry:

“I find myself, still after all these years of working, knocking at the door to be let in. We cannot afford to mistake the passage of time as progress. The steady march of years is not the same as change. In the face of this, it is so necessary, it is vital to find a community. Find those who build bridges with you and take you further because when all is said and done, there is absolutely no substitute for the act of simply doing the work, of finding the inspiration, of making something happen, and of actually creating.”

Both women look super chic and are crushing their lipstick choices. Nyong’o is a Lancôme brand ambassador and on her Instagram she helpfully points out the shade of lip crayon she is wearing.Plenty of floral interpretations at the Beguiled premiere and so far these ladies have been coordinating without ever looking too matchy matchy.

In a recent Sofia Coppola interview with Vulture the fact that so many big name directors are doing TV came up and I would love to see this happen:

“Yes! I would like to do a glamorous mini-series, although I know it’s just called a limited series now. But I feel like TV has gotten a little too gritty and edgy. I would like to bring glamour back to TV.”Pretty sure this group of ladies The Hollywood Reporter enlisted for the comedy actress roundtable could be part of Sofia Coppola’s TV glamour vision and I’m getting a strong sense of ’70s crime solving while also getting some cocktails.

As with the drama actresses, the comedy roundtable also has a high rate of delivering when it comes to an enlightening and often maddening chat. The latter includes horror audition stories and pay disparity based on gender. The whole thing can be read here and again I’m looking forward to watching the full version of this discussion.

Best of the Met Gala 2017: The Americans, Big Little Lies and More

2 May

More Met Gala and for the attendees who went big in honoring Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons head here. That’s not to say the second part of this rundown doesn’t feature strong nods to the theme, which definitely has room for interpretation, but there are definitely fewer ‘out there’ looks.

We do have treats from the casts of Big Little LiesThe Americans and some super handsome dudes in suits among others. Getting the best dressed couple title is Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as they mix things up in custom Rag & Bone. The coat tails twist on the lady suit is giving off strong ringmaster vibes and I am super partial to a kilt; this is how to a couples theme without looking too matchy matchy.

Great smoky eyes on Keri Russell too, which adds to the whole effect.

Not one, but three of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s three best dressed dudes all together and super stylist Ilaria Urbinati is good to us. Rami’s red is Dior (obvs), Riz is in also in Dior and Donald (my fave suit of the three) nods to Comme des Garçon in Burberry.

Now someone needs to cast this trifecta of swoon inducing dudes in a movie together. Please and thank you.Michael B. Jordan is another guy you can rely on to avoid the black tux doldrums and this Ralph Lauren plaid number looks fit for Hannibal, which is another way of me saying I love it.Entering the Big Little Lies portion of this post and Reese Witherspoon is serving up Joan Collins levels of dramatic shoulder in asymmetric Mulger playing with form.Zoë Kravitz knows how to make a mark in a romantic custom Oscar de la Renta gown complete with real roses. This manages to be super modern with a classic twist and Kravitz’s new blonde pixie cut gives this an edge. When you worship at the alter of Laura Dern it is fine to ignore that this is one of the many looks that isn’t really going all in on the theme, but between the cutouts and the polka dot train I am obviously here for this custom Gabriela Hearst.Another floral take and Lupita is radiant in coral Prada. Also appearing on Jessica Chastain’s A+ Met Gala Instagram Stories and with Rihanna in the background a good reminder of the film event we could be enjoying in the future.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BTk0Yc9ApH-/?taken-by=issarae

And because I love a getting ready BTS.An optical illusion from Elizabeth Banks in custom Michael Kors and I am just as mesmerized by the height of her heels. I would also be pulling this face if I was walking up this many stairs in these shoes. A red carpet best from Lena Dunham in gingham Elizabeth Kennedy with a fabulous silhouette, makeup and hair to boot. She also has a pair of boots beneath the layers of fabric.

As was mentioned on Twitter another theme of this Met Gala was people who have previously lamented about how much they hate this event and yet they’re back for more. Ultimate FOMO I guess. This Chanel is beautiful, but definitely more of an award season frock rather than a Met Gala one. But Brie looks great and she also got caught up in this bathroom moment.

I needed to go the bathroom and ended up famous.

Her face says it all.

Dakota Johnson looks like she’s on a widow revenge mission in custom Gucci and I’m here for it.One final moment of dramatic staircase posing and Daisy Ridley’s custom Oscar de la Renta isn’t quite the out there number I was hoping from her, but she’s working it.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 Jan

A slightly quieter week between the big events and with everyone heading down to Sundance expect a lot more knitwear and coats from the next column; considering how cold it is right now I am so ready.

On the menu today there’s the Elle ‘Women in Television’ celebration, even more TCA and various other public appearances that deliver sartorially.shailene-woodleyA casually slung coat and one this fabulous is a style weakness of mine and throwing it over the top of pants – which do need hemming – is even better. Shailene Woodley is giving off super cool vibes and at least she doesn’t have to wear that Fendi sweater for Elle on this occasion.

All the red lipstick points get dished out here too.constance-zimmerConstance Zimmer in a St John Knits blouse that is giving me all the Joan Watson feelings and she’s giving a classic outfit choice a colorful and shiny oomph with her bold pink lip and silver Aldo pumps.zoe-kravitzA lesson in how to do matchy matchy without looking over coordinated at the Big Little Lies TCA session last weekend. Zoë Kravitz was our favorite of the Elle covers this month; she’s also crushing it here in red Alexander Wang.mandy-mooreI think you might know what I’m going to say about Mandy Moore in REDValentino at the NBC TCA day and yep I would prefer this dress if the top half wasn’t sheer. BUT I do love the super colorful pleated skirt, red pumps and light pink lipstick. Plus I am pretty much obsessed with everything Moore wears on This is Us.this-is-usStaying with This is Us and it has been renewed for not one but two seasons. This is a show I like a lot and it is nice to have something this sentimental on TV right now. Plus it gives us two more seasons of Sterling K. Brown.

Also, keeping with the bold color theme and as someone who has way too many stripes in their closet (and I bought another one last weekend) I am very much here for Susan Kelechi Watson’s sweater. And in this week’s #LadySuitWatch2017 Melissa McCarthy also takes the TCA bold color challenge and puts her very own memorable spin on it all.

naomi-harrisBefore the holidays I stumbled upon the Literary Gift Company and for all your book themed apparel/stationary it really is a treasure trove. Long story short, but Naomie Harris in this Disaya calligraphy print dress feels a little like the luxury fashion version of this, so of course I love it.

Aidy Bryant looks fantastic in a very pretty floral Tanya Taylor frock while appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

It also turns out that I have the same glazed look drunk face as Bryant. As can be seen here.

issa-raeOkay so small disclaimer; this is not a look from this week. In fact this outfit is worn by Issa Rae in the Insecure pilot back in October and this is both a chance to make up for not including it back then (I have a good excuse in that I had only just got back from honeymoon) and shamelessly plug some work in other places.

This incredible ensemble is one I discuss in this week’s TV and Style column over at The Observer as part of an overall conversation on leopard print – which we featured a lot of recently – and this Stella McCartney wildcat collection has appeared on at least four shows now.Ending this week with Donald Glover giving full flames emoji in Gucci for this Wired profile. In the piece he talks about 30 Rock and why he wanted to write for TV

“I decided I wanted to write for television because of Tina. She was always so happy, and I was like, I want to be happy like that too.”

And FX president John Landgraf shows why so many incredibly creative voices talk so highly of their boss. There’s a level of trust here and this has definitely paid off with Atlanta.

“With Donald, he didn’t always articulate his vision in a way that we could see it, but his passions and ambition were clear. So we felt confident in the story he wanted to tell and how he wanted to tell it.”

Read the excellent profile here and for more A+ style check out his Golden Globes look

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Jan

A super busy week starting with the pre-Golden Globe parties followed by the actual Golden Globes and then all the incredible looks from the winter TCA press tour. Well not quite all the looks as I knew the FX panels that took place after I hit publish would probably include some sartorial highs. And I was right, which is why this week’s “Out of the Box” includes more from TCA. Also this from The Americans panel sounds adorable.

Plus we have post-Golden Globes parties, magazine covers/editorials and some coats to covet.ruth-neggaLeopard print is having a big moment this week and there is nothing I don’t love about Ruth Negga’s look as she heads into Jimmy Kimmel Live! This shows just how elegant animal prints can be and Negga wouldn’t look out of place in Carol wearing this ensemble.

Super stylist Karla Welch is crushing it with her selections for Ruth Negga and I love how unpredictable these choices are. naomie-harrisThis week the walk into Jimmy Kimmel Live! is giving us great coat action and Naomie Harris is going with a classic choice that would look fabulous billowing in the wind on a show like Sherlock or Taboo. Harris brightens things up with a very cute floral dress.carrie-coonFX is pretty much just gathering all my favorite people and putting them in shows with season 3 of Fargo being a very good example of this. Here is Carrie Coon giving great short hair and wearing a fantastic Novis dress that looks as comfy as it does stylish.

Entering behind her is Ewan McGregor (he’s playing twins on Fargo) and this looks like they’re coming out on stage to perform in their very sultry band. I would go to this gig and sway dreamily.mewAlso starring in the new season of Fargo is Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Winstead’s character on BrainDead was an instant TV style queen. Alas that show is no more, but I am glad someone else snapped her up quick. This gold and gunmetal black By Johnny ensemble looks fit for dancing as well as panel talking. Also very thankful for these entrance shots and not just the sitting down variety. katie-findlayContinuing the TCA trend of all the pattern pretty and at the Man Seeking Woman session Katie Findaly goes bright and bold with her A+ shoe and dress choice.kiernan-shipkaI just checked to see how old Kiernan Shipka is because there is so much poise here and yep she just turned 17. And she still remains so much cooler than me. I am so excited to see her on Feud (and the entire cast for this show is exceptional) and she will be playing Bette Davis’s daughter. Here she goes classic in black pants and a white blouse with a formal bollo tie/brooch twist.leighton-meesterLeighton Meester’s second appearance on here this week and at the InStyle Golden Globes after party she goes classic in a white wrap adjacent Galvan dress and to die for Sophie Webster blue pumps. The detail on the heel is bananas (not actually bananas).issa-raeChanging from an amazing Christian Siriano white frock into formal jumpsuit perfection is Issa Rae and this outfit swap makes so much sense. Rae’s award show look is one of our faves, but this custom Juan Carlos Obando jumpsuit looks much better for dancing/drinking/having fun in. And there’s only 50% white to accidentally spill stuff on and not the whole dress. janelle-monaeAlso making the switch from dress to jumpsuit is Janelle Monáe keeping with the black and white theme in Georges Chakra. Plus sequins.diane-krugerKeeping on the sequin theme and Diane Kruger goes all out in purple Nina Ricci and I love it.yara-shahidiEverything about Yara Shahidi’s post-Globes Schiaparelli look is so much fun and such a great mix of textures/color with pink fringed iridescent tulle and gold leather sleeves. And another to add to this week’s amazing coats list.stranger-things-teensWe’ve seen a lot from the super stylish Stranger Things kids, but now for the Stranger Things teens (who are actually in their twenties) giving great surly face. Mini Jean-Ralphio is actually more confused face and his hair has reached new heights. stranger-things-teens-part-2Don’t worry it is not all moodiness here and all is well.zoe-kravitzElle’s Women in TV issue is one of my favorites of the year and they went with Big Little Lies as their cover stars. I am very excited about this mini-series (and it features in my big preview), but it also pretty much means that it is movie stars on the cover. This Zoë Kravitz shot is a stunner and she gives such a good disarming stare.

Inside the issue Vanessa Kirby gives great polka dot ladysuit and confuses me by being blonde (because I’m so used to her Princess Margaret face). solange-interviewInterview Magazine has gifted us with so many great photo shoots and they kick off 2017 with an incredible cover story; Beyoncé interviewing her sister Solange. They cover everything from Solange’s most recent album, influences and their backgrounds. It is such a wonderful and insightful interview because they are sisters with stories like this one from Beyoncé “One of my proudest moments as a sister was when I was able to introduce you to your hero, Nas, and you cried and acted a fool. I was so surprised that Mrs. Too-cool-for-everything was acting a fool.”

The accompanying shoot is fabulous and this can be tagged in great ladysuits – this one is by David Hart – paired with a brown Miu Miu turtleneck.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

19 Feb

A mostly New York Fashion week edition of “Out of the Box” with plenty of famous faces flocking to runway shows to find out what they will be wearing come the next red carpet cycle/in their regular lives – they can probably afford the price tags.

This was going to be an all NYFW offering, but as I didn’t cover the BAFTAs (for other work/travel reasons) I wanted to include a couple of dresses from this event which wowed me.Diane Kruger, Jamie King, Jennifer HudsonIt’s New York in February and temperatures are on the chilly side so a coat casually slung over the shoulders is always a good choice and both Diane Kruger and Jennifer Hudson have opted for this at Jason Wu. If this was me I would definitely struggle with keeping it straight on my shoulders (you should see my oh so wonky gown graduation pictures). This is a fun blend of looks with Jennifer Hudson wearing the very on trend leather, Diane looking cool in cornflower blue and Jamie King rounding out the picture in a dress ideal for a weekend away in the country at Downton Abbey type venue.Claire DanesA beautiful and simple shot of Claire Danes watching the Narciso Rodriguez runway show on Tuesday. Kiernan Shipka, Amadla Stenberg, Marc JacobsThe Marc Jacobs presentation was packed last night and whenever I see a front row like this I just assume that this is the first time most of them are meeting each other. Not the case with our favorite teen BFFs Amandla Stenberg and Kiernan Shipka. Andra Day’s movie themed ensemble is super fun and that’s a whole lot of excellent bold lip colors from Day, Ashley Benson and Odeya Rush.  Amandla StenbergA clearer look at Amandla Stenberg’s fabulous Marc Jacobs ‘Scream Queens‘ skirt – Olivia Wilde wore the dress version recently – and pairing it with sneakers adds to the laid back vibe.Natasha Lyonne and Christina RicciWhile Stenberg’s gone for sneakers (a woman after my own flats loving heart) there are a lot of stacked platforms on display and I’m maybe coveting Christina Ricci’s ‘Edie Mary Jane‘ patent delights. There’s also something a little Wednesday Addams about her whole outfit and I’m so here for Natasha Lyonne’s bold red (pleather?) skirt.Juliet LewisJuliette Lewis looking like the coolest golfer that ever lived at Marc Jacobs. The pants maybe need a little hemming, but as someone who couldn’t see their shoes for the first half of the aughts I am also fine with this.Zosia Mamet - Marc JacobsSee the above comment about the pants and ribbons/ascots/scarves are really making a big swing for Fall 2016 with Zosia Mamet also working prints at Marc Jacobs. Ellie, Zosia, FriedaMore Zosia at the Kate Spade New York presentation – we picked out some outfits for Shoshanna in our Kate Spade Fantasy Costuming piece – and more excellent patterned attire. Posing with Ellie Kemper and Freida Pinto the trio stuck to the monochrome department rather than going for the bright Kate Spade color palette. Zoe Kazan Kate SpadeAdding a splash of color in a super pretty floral ensemble is Zoe Kazan proving that black tights can be worn with something this summer looking. It is still February after all.Zoe KazanMore Zoe Kazan and the Jill Stuart frock she gave a sneak peek look at on Instagram and I feel like I have very similar clothing taste to Kazan; this is right in my dress wheelhouse. And tights. I love tights.Naomie Harris - Michael KorsNaomie Harris was a knockout during the Spectre press tour last year and once again she is killing it at the Michael Kors Collection show in Michael Kors. Pink pumps add a touch of flair to this floral delight.Taraji P. Henson and Zoe KravitzWhile I still haven’t come up with a suitable term to describe something more than #SquadGoals here is the non-selfie version of Taraji P. Henson and Zoe Kravitz on the front row at Alexander Wang still looking super cool. Henson looked stunning in Alexander Wang at the recent Golden Globes and this is brand which suits her style well while avoiding any Cookie comparisons.Julia GarnerAlso at Alexander Wang – Julia Garner somehow looking cute and edgy all at once in leather. No word if she will be back for season 4 of The Americans but no doubt if she is then expect plenty of heartbreak.Alicia VikanderMore leather and Alicia Vikander’s BAFTA Louis Vuitton frock is a weighty 35 lbs. The last three big events has seen Vikander wearing a variety of looks from the brand she models for and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for her a week on Sunday. It’s weird to think award season is almost at an end.Cate BlanchettCate Blanchett also cranks it up a gear for the BAFTAs in a stunning Alexander McQueen dress of two halves and each one is just as spectacular as the other.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

17 Feb

That very busy time of year when it is not only New York Fashion Week, but the awards keep on coming and shows are returning/are deep into their filming schedule. It is good for “Behind the Insta-Scenes” as there is plenty of variety this week.

One week! We psyched!

Happy Broad City Day! We are very excited to have Abbi and Ilana back on TV and this picture of a Polaroid is a delight (and means I am no longer questioning the times when I have posted a photo of a Polaroid).

Repost by @sabongui. A little BTS of Earth2!

On Earth-2, Iris has super wide legged pants and I am so here for this futuristic retro look.

Those two emblems look pretty good together… @melissabenoist

Meanwhile Grant Gustin is also moonlighting over on Supergirl; Gustin and Melissa Benoist do look very good together. I really need to catch up on Supergirl before this episode happens.

Constance Zimmer’s very on point sweater this weekend gets extra points for the Galentine’s tag (and now I’m sad I forgot to include Rachel and Quinn in this post – next year).

NYFW is all over Instagram including many runway shots and this one from The Cut’s Stella Bugbee captures the fluidity and pretty from the Altuzarra show.

Jill Stuart dress delights – which you will be able to see in full as part of “Out of the Box” – courtesy of Zoe Kazan.

Thankfully there’s a lot more laughter and a lot less animosity behind the scenes on Scandal without all the romantic dramaz.

HOT

I’m just gonna go ahead and assume this is Michael Sheen and also very much agree with Sarah Silverman’s straight to the point caption.
