Lots of behind the scenes treats this week including soon to be returning shows such as You’re the Worst and Looking (in a one off movie form). Plus the first table read of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend season 2 and a whole lot of style highlights from Instagram.
Aya Cash gives an inside look into the different types of cover ups worn when filming sex scenes on cable and on network. Yes I googled (or rather Binged as I’m on my mother’s laptop and maybe on a CW show from two years ago) Shibue; they have a lot of products.
All the LOLs at Aya Cash and this not so subtle shade throwing.
I am already highly anticipating this episode. As I mentioned last week 2 Dope Queens turned my teary state into a much needed moment of laughter and this is one of many endorsements I have for this podcast.
The Looking movie is almost here and while I am not ready to say goodbye, I am ready for all the behind the scenes photos like this.
BrainDead is a lot of fun and pretty much the ideal summer show. It doesn’t entirely know what it wants to be tonally, but I could watch Aaron Tveit and Mary Elizabeth Winstead heating up the screen all day long.
And the Orange is the New Black cast are back on set for season 5.
UnREAL hasn’t been hitting the heights of season 1, but this week’s episode was a turn in the right direction and the it happened to be directed by none other than Shiri Appleby who crushed it (and me) both in front of and behind the camera.
Busy Philipps is on a dress hot streak of late and this is yet another reason to fire up that 100 emoji.
Busy Philipps is also killing it in the robes stakes and I’m gonna go ahead and add this to the robes I love list.
Jenny Slate delivers us a good example of a great cooking look.
I finished Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (which I love) and now I get to follow Rachel Bloom on Instagram! Season 2 table read time!
Also on the recently followed list and I am so ready to look back at the many varied costumes on Sex and the City.
Also looking back as yesterday was the fifteenth anniversary of Legally Blonde and Reese Witherspoon celebrated in style with an Elle Woods costume retrospective including this bikini number.
Lots of Orange is the New Black on the TV Insta menu this week including the cast Times Talk and taking part in the New York City Pride parade. Plus You’re the Worst, UnREAL and plenty of style highs to scroll through.
Exhibit 1. The You’re the Worst set looks like a very happy place.
Exhibit 2. Also welcome Samira Wiley to You’re the Worst and this is very good casting news. Sunglasses and denim heaven.
Ruling TV Instagram this week is the Orange is the New Black cast including behind the scenes shots that couldn’t be shared during shooting (because spoilers) and a variety of public appearances.
Unplanned accidental ladysuit black and white reversed co-ordination at the OITNB Times Talk panel.
Danielle Brooks bows out of this talk early (after taking this great picture of Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon) and she has the best reason; she has to go to her other job performing on Broadway in The Color Purple.
The OITNB cast also took part in New York City’s Pride parade on Sunday and are giving off so many great outfit vibes.
Including Samira Wiley’s custom Milly tee (which I am coveting hard).
A really beautiful shot of Dascha Polanco from the parade taken by Natasha Lyonne.
Rivaling the OITNB for most prolific cast on Instagram is UnREAL and thankfully everyone looks far happier here than they do behind the scenes on Everlasting.
Constance Zimmer giving great face and boob touching poses as the UnREAL season 2 promo trail continues. Makeup artist Tina Turnbow delivers on the lipstick choice once again.
Jenny Slate reveals some bathtub filming secrets.
Lots of cupcakes for Aubrey Plaza’s birthday and a Parks and Rec reunion courtesy of Anna Faris’ excellent podcast Anna Faris is Unqualified.
A fantastic look from Busy Philipps and this patterned Gucci frock is also getting added to the coveting hard list.
Pretty sure Julia Louis-Dreyfus has a portrait in her attic.
Not entirely sure what is going on here but it is equal parts terrifying and amazing. Super cute casual outfit too.
Between Orange is the New Black and “The Battle of the Bastards” there was a lot going on this week on TV and this edition of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” has got you covered on both. Plus we’ve got shows that are currently in productions, ones that have just finished and lots of other fun stuff is on the Instagram highlights menu.
It’s all fun and games in Maureen when things aren’t getting set on fire/people aren’t being stabbed.
A “How to Get Blood out of Your Beard” tutorial is probably needed for the Game of Thrones guys and it is good to see all is crazy in love when the camera stops rolling.
And now for a “Who Wore it Better?” Battle of the Bastards edition (Part 2).
I have a lot of feelings about this new season of Orange is the New Black and I don’t want to say too much for those who have not finished yet, but I am very happy the OITNB cast have been posting photos like the one above. Need this moment of happiness.
And adorable ones like this, which is also from the New York premiere.
Adding to the feelings scale is the Orphan Black season 4 finale and thanks for the flowers Tatiana!
Now for shows currently in production and this bts shot of Justin Theroux from season 3 of The Leftovers. As Theroux points out; no handcuffs (or shirt) necessary.
After recently marathoning my way through the first two seasons of iZombie I’ve still got that post-watch emptiness (see also OITNB) so even though there isn’t a season 3 premiere date yet, it is good to see some of the cast back on iZombie duty.
There are lots of reasons to be excited about this new season of You’re the Worst and one of them is this amazing casting news.
On BrainDead Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Tveit danced together. It was magical. As is this prom style pic.
While a lot of the FNL cast were in Austin for the ATX Television Festival; Aimee Teegarden, Taylor Kitsch, Zach Gilford and Minka Kelly were taking part in the Spartan Race. Another reunion I can get behind. Even with Kitsch’s mustache.
This is from a couple of weeks ago (when I covered the outfits from this event), but somehow I missed it and I’m making up for that now.
Joshua Jackson and Kiernan Shipka doing their best January Jones pose might be my new favorite thing.
The way to get two entries is to quote from Overboard. Always an instant YES in my book/blog.
To be filed under “Things that are Adorable”
The Tony Awards red carpet was awash with color and pattern so it was interesting to see that the rest of this week was so dominated by neutrals and metallics with a dash of florals.
We’ve got the New York Orange is the New Black premiere and a couple of other events featuring some TV Ate My Wardrobe faves.Happy OITNB Day!
Samira Wiley in a classic plunging black jumpsuit – cue reminder that I still need to embrace this trend – and bold berry lip color. I love seeing group shots of this cast because what other show has this much diversity and array of body shapes, looks and style choices with this many women? I think the answer is probably none. And this is just a small portion of the sizable OITNB cast.
Outfit standouts here include Laverne Cox and Uzo Aduba with Taylor Schilling and Natasha Lyonne – does this mean Nicky is back? – getting the lipstick points. Going for a look that would fit right in at Studio 54 and Vicky Jeudy crushes it in gold metallic Halston. Keeping on the metal theme with Taraji P. Henson in Marc Jacobs serving up a whole lot of steel with a dash of floral embellishment at the Women In Film 2016 Crystal + Lucy Awards; Henson was honored with the Lucy Award for Excellence in Television for her performance as Cookie Lyon on Empire. Keeping on this muted shimmery trend at the Women In Film 2016 Crystal + Lucy Awards is Claire Danes in Dolce & Gabbana with her second red carpet appearance on TV Ate My Wardrobe this week. Pink lipstick yes! Kerry Washington is a patterned dress wearing queen and after last week’s dreamy D&G number here is another delight; this time it is Giambattista Valli and I am particularly here for those floaty sleeves. More pink lipstick to add some color into this week’s muted tones theme. Ending this week’s “Out of the Box” with a boost of color and pants with Rose McIver at the 2016 Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future event celebrating Natalie Dormer (who was honored at the Women In Film 2016 Crystal + Lucy Awards – also sponsored by Max Mara).
McIver’s look is giving me so many late 90s flashbacks, but not of the choker *shudder* kind and this looks like something I would have worn back then and even now. Also giving me Keri Russell in Felicity vibes. Love the fresh faced/hair back approach here and I cannot wait for iZombie to return after my recent binge.
A very quiet week on Instagram on the TV work front because of Memorial Day weekend. This also means there have been plenty of celebs at the beach/hanging in the sunshine photos splashed across Insta of which we have a couple, but the majority of this week is dedicated to co-star hangouts and cute outfits.
Norman Reedus went to see Eclipsed and this ticks all my supporting a co-star in their other endeavors boxes. Plus a whole lot of patterned outfit delights.
Continuing with this theme and a much more loving/supportive version of this relationship than the one we saw on Orange is the New Black.
More from the OITNB ladies and they’re celebrating Laverne Cox’s birthday, which also ticks those co-stars who hang out boxes. Plus it is just over two weeks until OITNB returns (Friday, June 17).
So this is not from this week, but as I just caught up with iZombie I have some new Insta accounts to peruse and this is just too wonderful not to include. Robert Buckley in glasses is a really good look.
Maisie Williams is giving me so many flashbacks to my first festival going summer way back when as the 90s continues to dominate. Whenever I see anyone with star earrings like this it makes me regret my non-pierced lobes.
Keeping with the 90s and Game of Thrones trend with Emilia Clarke getting particularly giddy on The Graham Norton Show.
Cute Outfit: Part 1 with a side order of whoa that shoe closet.
Cute Outfit: Part 2
Cute Outfit: Part 3 (the really super cute edition)
Cute Outfit: Part 4 (the boozy Memorial Day weekend edition)
When I see Goldie Hawn in swimwear all I can think of is Overboard as no one does swimwear quite like Goldie in this movie.
Cannes kicks off this week and jury member Kirsten Dunst is already slaying all over the place in both casual and evening wear. There is a whole yellow theme this week and we’ve got great BAFTA style. Plus some bonus runway joy.Everything about this Kirsten Dunst Cannes Jury photocall look is perfection right down to the wedges, but really the yellow Dior (yes Dior can pull a stunner out the hat still) dress and the red lipstick is what has me going full heart eyes emoji. It is also giving me flashes of The Two Faces of January; a movie I watched on a plane and I enjoyed for all things Dunst, Oscar Isaac and the A+ costume design. And for the evening Kiki goes for ethereal floral beauty in pink and red Gucci. As with Claire Danes, my love for Dunst goes way back to my teens with things like The Virgin Suicides and I am so excited to see what other delights she will have on offer over the festival.Mads Mikkelsen is also on the jury and he has every right to look this pleased with himself as he is a tuxedo wearing dreamboat. This helps fill in the very big hole left by Hannibal in terms of men’s style and Mads.More yellow thrills from Cannes with Anna Kendrick hitting up the Cafe Society premiere in a bold Stella McCartney gown.We said goodbye to Cush Jumbo’s Lucca Quinn this week and I cannot wait to see what she does next. For now here is Jumbo at the BAFTA TV Awards in gold Michael Kors and she looks incredible.Maisie Williams is pretty in sparkly metallic pink at the BAFTAs and this Antonio Berardi mini dress continues Williams’ funky red carpet hot streak.Ending this week’s yellow infused “Out of the Box” with Danielle Brooks walking the runway for Christian Siriano’s new Lane Bryant plus-size collection. The rooftop event showcased the collection, the city and the models in the most fabulous way.
If only all runway events were this fun.
Also this week saw the release of a new Orange is the New Black trailer ahead of its premiere next month and tension levels at Litchfield look set to increase.
This is what I was trying to watch on Wednesday when my internet went kaput so now is a very good time to give a shout out to my friend Tony for taking pity on me and letting me set up shop in his front room so I can do some work (and watch things like this). Fingers crossed by Monday all normal service will resume.
If this week’s Instagram collection could be summed up in one emoji it would be heart eyes as there are plenty of co-stars hanging out treats on offer with a strong dose of cute.
Kicking off this week with a big scoop of adorable and Rami Malek hanging with co-star Portia Doubleday’s dog Logan.
Keeping on the Mr Robot train and on set selfies from the new season that don’t reveal anything new, but I heart regardless. Heavy Darlene eyeliner is always welcome.
Everything about this photo is charming as hell and now I want this coupling to be a very real thing.
Girls is on a hot streak this season and this week’s Marnie-centric episode was as triumphant as Allison Williams looks in this photo.
Flashing back to simpler times and pre whatever happened that caused Christopher Abbott to leave Girls under a cloud. But he did return and boy did we get a much more beardy Charlie in the process and this episode really is top tier Girls. It was good to see him again even if it was tinged with the tragedy of what has since become of Charlie. I miss that awesome bed he made.
Praise is justifiably heaped on Jane the Virgin from so many different angles and visually it continues to be striking in fresh and new ways. Everyone here looks spectacular.
They also kill it in motion.
The OITNB countdown has begun and I cannot wait to spend more time with these ladies.
One thing I spend more time thinking about than is maybe necessary is whether actors end up falling asleep during sleeping scenes or in this case in a pile of laundry after fake taking a lot of drugs. And the answer looks like yes.
Album cover ready.
Basketball being played on set between takes gives me instant ER vibes and I’m also enjoying how these poses both resemble a superhero stance and shooting hoops.
This is very cute and I am happy Elementary has been renewed for season 5.
Keeping on the cute theme and sadly my request to keep this going for forever has been denied and the Room promo tour is officially over.
It’s not an Anthora coffee cup, but regardless I’m getting Bob Benson flashbacks.
Diane Kruger models this Coach sweater that I would like to see in my closet and also on TV Ate My Wardrobe sweater queen Chelsea Peretti.
Instagram is a platform used for many things including celebrities wishing each other happy birthday in picture form. Sarah Jessica Parker took this opportunity to post not one, but a whopping nine pictures celebrating the incredible Amy Sedaris and it only made me love SJP even more.
Justin Theroux went with a more sedate two, but this one is also fabulous.
It’s like Aya Cash reached into my brain with this picture/caption. The world needs more Melanie Laurent.
For any Music Monday regulars you will know already how much I appreciate the variety of end credit music on shows like Girls, You’re the Worst (which took the Best of 2015 crown) and Togetherness. Mad Men crushed end credit music selections week in week out and Orange is the New Black, Deutschland 83 and The Leftovers are also strong contenders in this field. With this in mind and for this season Girls instead of producing a playlist at the end of the season I will be adding to the closing credits playlist on weekly basis.
Starting on episode 4 makes it an EP of sorts and one of my favorite things about the music on Girls is that even if the episode has been kinda shitty for the characters there tends to be a hopeful edge to the song choices. The last few moments of “Old Loves” showcases the after of the bad/awkward sex encounters we have just witnessed with Elijah wondering around Dill’s fancy apartment in his underwear and Jessa watches a sleeping Adam before laying her head down on his bare chest. Hannah and Fran are dealing with non-sex related issues this week and this is the most fractured environment.Thankfully we are spared Desi and Marnie post-coital bliss or tears or whatever because if Desi can’t even get his top off properly I’m not sure I want to see that. The song that plays over these moments and the credits is “iT” by Christine and the Queens. There is a whole lot of coming together in “Old Loves” but as the title suggests there is a lot from the past bubbling beneath the surface and like those old celebrity couples has time run its course on a friendship like Hannah and Jessa’s? The argument in the rice pudding place (which I really want to go to because I love rice pudding) would suggest this and perhaps this is Jessa’s way of self sabotaging her friendship because of Adam. And also because Hannah and Jessa have always had this contentious thing that doesn’t quite match up with the best in best friends.
PS I love Old Loves and now I share this with Marnie I’m not entirely sure how I feel because as Abbi pointed out in the Broad City season 3 premiere with Charlotte from SATC – who Marnie clearly is the closest equivalent of* – even if you can identify that way you’re reluctant to admit it as she’s really annoying at times. I also have love/hate feelings towards her silver pants and they are the perfect clothing representation of my relationship with Marnie.
*Updated because it just occurred to me that her apartment/wall situation made me think of Aidan renovating Carrie’s apartment and there is also something Carrie about Marnie. Aidan is no Desi thankfully.
Here is the start of the Girls season 5 closing credits playlist.
Check back every week as the playlist gets longer and becomes album length.
Update! The “Life on Mars” AURORA performed cover of the incredible David Bowie song is not available on Spotify (it is on iTunes) so instead I have opted to switch it out for my favorite non-Bowie version of this song. This one comes from another soundtrack (The Life Aquatic) with Seu Jorge singing this track. The original version also appears on this soundtrack.
