Best of 2017 – Work in Other Places

30 Dec

Welcome to the Best of 2017! Today I am going to do a Greatest Hits rundown of my work in other places.

2017 is the year I decided to spread my pitching wings. It has been a year of ups and downs. Articles that have been percolating that were fully realized. Figuring out how to not take rejection too personally. Sometimes ideas are not great. Sometimes they need more work. I’m in a better position than I have ever been in before in my writing career, there is still a long way to go. But my confidence level when it comes to pitching is higher. I’m no longer terrified when I hit ‘send.’ Well, not always. I also expanded beyond just TV; below you will also find fashion history and essays on film.

Here are the pieces I am most proud of from this year. As always I am thankful to the editors that make me a better writer and to friends and family that are there for me through the triumphs and tears. And everyone reading, you make it all worth it.

How Wonder Woman Subverts the Makeover Montage

I have been reading Elle magazine since I was 13-years-old. I am a subscriber to both the UK and US editions. This was by far the coolest thing that happened to me writing wise. Getting to talk about Wonder Woman and the makeover montage trope was a dream come true. This was also one of my favorite movies of the year. Lindy Hemming’s costume design from both the actual Wonder Woman costume to the London garb is incredible and deserves celebrating. Plus I got to talk CluelessShe’s All ThatNot Another Teen Movie and The Americans.

How the Henley Shirt Went From Workman’s Undershirt to CW Staple

My relationship with Racked does not go back as far as my one with Elle, but I have been a big fan of this site for a long time; I love the mix of historical pieces, fashion industry deep dives and shopping advice. Often I’ll remark when a dude is wearing a henley on Twitter and after semi-jokingly mentioning that I should write an article looking into why, I decided to put my money where my mouth is. And it turned into one of my favorite pieces of the year.

The Bloody Consequences of Wearing a Straw Hat After Summer

Fashion history with an unexpected twist is what this straw hat essay is all about. After reading about the Straw Hat Riots of 1922 in Neil Steinberg’s “Hatless Jack” I knew I had to find out more. This led to one of many New York Times archive deep dives—the access to the archives is worth the subscription fee alone—and this article for Racked.

Is The Americans Setting Paige Up as a Classic “Final Girl”?

For Collider I got to write one of my most out there theories this year, where I explored the idea of Paige from The Americans through the lens of the horror movie “Final Girl” trope. It will make sense when you read it.

Why Game of Thrones Is Stuck in the Past with a Manufactured Stark Sibling Rivalry

The season 7 finale of Game of Thrones redeemed some of the Sansa/Arya issues with a moment that made me scream “fuck yes!” at my TV. But it doesn’t make up for how sloppy their plot trajectory was before this point. At Collider I vented about why this storyline missed the mark by a long way.

‘Halt and Catch Fire’ Series Finale: Legacy, Hope, and Getting Us to the People

Something that definitely did not miss the mark was the final season of Halt and Catch Fire. I wept my way through the finale and somehow turned those emotions into this goodbye to Cam, Donna, Gordon and Joe.

The Power of Love and White Costuming on The Leftovers

Another finale that broke me into a million pieces was The Leftovers. My weekly column at The Observer gave me the chance to deep dive into the use of white costuming and the overall love story aspect of my favorite show of 2017.

The Handmaid’s Tale Costume Designer on the Series’ Wardrobe Influences

This was also a year that involved a lot of interviews with a variety of costume designers covering both film and TV. Also a learning curve, including grappling with technology. This is now the third time I have interviewed Ane Crabtree (previously for Westworld and Masters of Sex). I am so glad I got to discuss the iconic costumes from The Handmaid’s Tale and the way this look has been adopted by political resistance movements IRL.

Disguises to Adidas: The Americans Costume Designer Shares Tricks of the Spy Trade

Another repeat interview subject for me is Katie Irish, The Americans costume designer. This time we discussed retro sports apparel, using high school year books for research and her personal connection to one particular disguise from season 5.

TV For All Seasons: Costumes Across Climates on The Americans and Girls

The idea of summer and winter shows is something I have been obsessing about for a long time. I wrote about it for The Observer.

How Call Me By Your Name Dispels the “Beard” Stereotype By Portraying Sexuality As Fluid

I haven’t stopped thinking about Call Me By Your Name, it is my favorite film of 2017. So I am very pleased that in my first piece for Bustle, I explored the portrayal of different forms of desire and how this film didn’t lean into ‘beard’ stereotypes.

What Princess Margaret’s Love Story on The Crown Can Teach Us About Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Relationship

Another piece that allowed me to fall down a New York Times archive hole while looking at the parallels between a romance on The Crown and the recent Prince Harry/Meghan Markle courtship (going old school). Things haven’t really changed a great deal since 1960 when it comes to the way tabloids discuss Royal romance.

For all Best of 2017 pieces including my personal essay on The Americans head here.

Happy New Year! And thanks for reading.

TV Ate My Soundtrack: The “Look What You Made Me Do” Edition

25 Aug

Taylor Swift has a new song out — news I’m sure you are aware of — and while I was far, far from blown away, I have had the line “Look what you made me do” playing on a loop in my head since. And I’ve only listened to it once. Even a mediocre song can create an earworm. While this is no “All Too Well” or “Out of the Woods” it will make for a good TV soundtrack moment and my first thought after pushing aside those underwhelmed feelings was “What TV show will use this song?” Well, the TGIT ABC line-up was quick out the gate proving this song might not be a banger, but it works well alongside Shonda dramas. The Right Said Fred beat has a lot to do with that.

TV show playlists pretty much make up a good 75% of my Spotify playlists — current and old shows — and so here are the shows/scenes both past and present that I think this new Taylor track could accompany.

Sidenote — I just remembered Taylor has both been referenced in New Girl and has appeared on New Girl as an entirely different character. Here is the fantasy soundtrack casting of this song:

Felicity – Meghan finally reveals the contents of her box. She is not very happy about doing so, but we do get another Twilight Zone style episode so it is a win/win.

Game of Thrones – Taylor guest stars as Arya Stark, or rather a version of Arya as part of the acting troupe we met last season. And after hearing Arya recite her list of names actress Arya turned it into this song. It does not go over well with viewers.

Girls – Marnie sings a cover version of this song to absolve her from any wrong doing. It is simultaneously the best thing I have ever heard and the most cringe worthy moment. Classic Marnie.

Gossip Girl – pre Dan is Gossip Girl reveal, Dan feels conflicted about a Serena blast he sent to Gossip Girl after seeing her with a mystery new guy. Later on, when it is revealed that Dan is Gossip Girl, this is one scene of many that makes no sense

How to Get Away with Murder – we find out how not to get away with murder and I can still only name two characters by name (other than Annalise).

Mad Men – occasionally Mad Men would delve into contemporary music for the closing credits and I like to think this would follow on from when Pete tried to get his revenge on Don by revealing his real identity (and it failed).

New Girl – a montage of Jess attempting to appear a little edgy to her students because she wants them to think she is cool. It does not work and she instantly reverts back to all things twee. Sounds like a plan someone else should stick to.

Revenge – Emily Thorne red sharpie of doom montage. A tad on the nose, but sometimes it is best to keep it simple.

Riverdale – After a fight with Jughead, Betty sticks on red lipstick, brunette wig and bralette and goes to some dark, dark places at a nightclub while Veronica looks concerned. Yes, this is sort of a repeat of last season. But with added Tay.

Scandal – one of the main characters kills someone, but it’s handled. Red wine is consumed and cardigans are coveted.

Wonderfalls – a plastic snake tells Jaye to blow up her relationship with Eric and this song plays as Jay drowns her sorrows with a lot of shots.

You’re the Worst – Sam makes a remix version of “New Phone, Who Dis?” with the line “I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now.” “Why?” “Oh ’cause she’s dead!” It is a surprise hit and now Gretchen has to do a lot more work.

Taylor, look what you made me do.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Feb

The SAG Awards delivered on both speeches and fashion this weekend and on this week’s “Out of the Box” we’ve got a whole lot of great outfits from the Entertainment Weekly pre-SAG party with a dash of the PGA Awards, the beginning of the end for Girls, a new campaign and a very important announcement.yara-shahidi-ewYara Shahidi was our best dressed at the SAG Awards in an incredible striped Naeem Khan frock and at the pre-SAG EW party she went in a very different, but just as fun direction. All baby blues from eye makeup to the abstract print matching Sophie Theallet shirt and pants.kristen-schaalFor all things wacky and delightful look no further than Kristen Schaal and her amazing kitty dress. I love everything about this. Also super cute gold shoes that I would like in my life.malin-akermanMalin Akerman serving up full shoulder drama in metallic striped Zhivago and this is the kind of dress you wear when you want to throw a drink in someone’s face. Or just look cool as fuck.grace-gealey-and-candice-pattonPatterned ladysuit alert with Grace Byers going full plunge in Keti Chkhikvadze and in very cute dress news we have Candice Patton in Tommy Hilfiger. That collar is everything (and now I am looking at dresses on the Tommy Hilfiger website and am very tempted by this).the-crownWhile I very much preferred both Vanessa Kirby and Claire Foy’s SAG ceremony outfits, I also couldn’t pass up this opportunity to post this picture of a much happier (and more alive in some cases) family from The Crown. Lipstick points for Kirby and Foy too.stranger-teensThe Stranger Things cast tends to be split between the kids and the teens when posing for photos; here at the EW party Natalia Dyer instead hangs with her onscreen younger brother and his friends and once again the boys look super swish in their suits. Especially Caleb McLaughlin in bow tie and waistcoat. Dyer’s super floral mini is another very cute Miu Miu and this brand is working like a charm on her.miles-brown-and-caleb-mclaughlinDancing cuties and Stranger Things meets Black-ish. Blue shoes are a must at the pre-SAG party for Caleb McLaughlin and Miles Brown.sag-dancingMore fabulous shoes and moves from the boys at a SAG after party and they’re joined by Janelle Monàe.stranger-dancingAnd now with Samira Wiley and the rest of the Stranger Things kids. Post awards dancing photos are the best.rami-malekThe night before the SAGs Rami Malek went a little more classic in his choice of Dior suit and he also appears to have adopted the signature Eddie Redmayne lean.girls-thrGoing full Friends cast shot as The Hollywood Reporter celebrates Girls with an oral history and a cover featuring the core cast. This is a really well styled shoot and I now have Lost in Translation like questions as I wonder what Adam Driver is whispering into Andrew Rannells’ ear. kenzoKenzo’s new Spring 2017 campaign features Tracee Ellis Ross, Jesse Williams and cellist/singer Kelsey Lu. A short film called “Music is My Mistress” will be released next Thursday (February 9) and if these print ads are any indication it is going to be pretty special.yara-shahidi-ivy-parkAnd in other fantastic campaign news; here is Yara Shahidi for Ivy Park and this oversized sweater/short shorts look is great. Shahidi appeared in Lemonade and re-teaming with Beyoncé for her clothing brand makes so much sense.

Also thank you Beyoncé for giving us something to be happy about this week. And I love that her underwear is not matching. Also where can I get that bra?

The First Magazine Covers of 2017 Are Here!

4 Jan

Happy New Year, everyone! And you can tell the holiday period is over because yesterday saw a lot of publications releasing the covers of their first 2017 issues (okay some of these are technically the February issue, but whatever).

We have the annual film fest celebrating the performances of the year just before award season goes into hyperdrive – the Golden Globes are THIS Sunday – and the start of the final season of Girls countdown. Plus some bonus royals because The Crown has made me a fan apparently.adam-driver-and-viggo-wexcels at photo shoots with a vast array of talent and tends to skew a bit weird in the art direction. This year’s movie issue it is all about romance and each cover is a different pair of actors with some being a lot more awkward (looking at you Nicole) than others; this one of Adam Driver and Viggo Mortensen instantly stood out for reasons and because they are gazing directly at viewer.

Inside the issue there is more and some of the shots are more effective than others, whereas some get a lamp as a boob prop stand in (sorry Greta).

glamour-magazine-girlsIn several firsts the women of Girls get their first shared cover and Glamour produces its first all-female issue. Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive told WWD the reasons behind it came from looking at the people that made up the creative elements of previous issues and “As of the fall, only 37 percent of the photographers we were using in our own print pages were female, and 32 percent of the hairstylists…and fewer than half of the makeup artists.” So every page of this issue was created by a woman (with one exception – Michelle Obama’s makeup artist Carl Ray).

The cover is also notable because of the lack of photoshop on Lena Dunham as she has been outspoken about this in the past. The interview with the cast goes through the ups and downs of shooting Girls including who tried to quit (Jemima Kirke) in season 2. Plus you get to see which actors are closest to their characters. Those sure are some stacked platforms that even Geri Halliwell might have issues walking in.

Girls returns February 15 and you can see more from the shows on my most anticipated style list over at The Observer. This issue of Glamour is available on newsstands print and digital now.prince-harryBetween Adam Driver and Prince Harry this year is kicking off to a good forearm start.

Prince Harry appears in Town & Country this month to discuss his huge conservation project and he graces TV Ate My Wardrobe because this is a good cover and he’s my fave royal (well joint with forever fave Princess Margaret). Plus he’s dating someone from TV right now so this isn’t completely tenuous. Okay it is a little tenuous, but good on Harry for using his privileged position to do something good.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

Instagram delivers on the TV style front, film festival glamour and on set singing this week. Plus find out some intimate You’re the Worst information and the usual amount of sweater and lipstick coveting.

The Leftovers is still shooting its final season out in Australia and I am glad to see Justin Theroux will be sporting his beard throughout. Liv Tyler captures him here working the leopard print in the hair and makeup trailer.

It has been a bit of a Leftovers watching week as I got the second season for my birthday and I wrote about Kevin’s karaoke here.

The kids from Stranger Things crushed their appearance on The Tonight Show and Questlove captures some of the backstage madness in this group selfie.

Still no details about who Matthew Rhys is playing on Girls but here he is shooting a scene with Lena Dunham, beard and all.

The search for the perfect Emmy dress continues and I wonder if we will see any of these on the red carpet come September 18.

I can only see half this sweater, but I know I love it.

You’re the Worst returned last week with a fabulous episode and the cast took over the Backstage Instagram. There’s plenty of behind the scenes videos including Chris Geere showing off a modesty pouch/cock sock. He definitely had to wear one in the season premiere.

Standard lipstick and sunglasses envy.

Chris Geere was also understandably excited to make his talk show debut on The Late Show.

One of my favorite costume designers with one of my favorite actresses. Looking forward to seeing what this pairing brings.

Now for one of my makeup artist faves with another Orange is the New Black stars and this series of photos of Natasha Lyonne are fantastic.

The iZombie set continues to deliver on the fun and the songs.

Greg Williams delivers once again on intimate photographs from the Venice Film Festival and here are a few of my favorites. Starting with Jake getting ready, just because.

Getting up close with super couple Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber. Luckily this dress doesn’t require some awkward lying down.

When in Venice you’ve got to have a boat shot. For more from Greg Williams check out his portraits from the festival at Vanity Fair.

Fall TV premiere dates inch closer – and You’re the Worst is back tonight! – and so plenty of behind the scenes promo is occurring. Plus fabulous guest stars, guest directors and one show is almost forever finished shooting.

A lot of beard to kick off this week’s Insta highlights with Kristofer Hivju and Michael Fassbender. Future Fassy in Game of Thrones possibilities are probably low, but this wouldn’t be his first HBO venture as he was in a couple of Band of Brothers episodes.

And then Zooey Deschanel under an umbrella wearing a headband and check shirt look that I will no doubt be after when this episode airs.

Also back the same week on Fox is Empire and Taraji P. Henson gives a little costume sneak peek featuring some very large hooped earrings.

From the summer TCA and the Mr Robot ladies continue to crush it.

To be filed under “this is kind of cool, but also creepy as fuck.”

Eva Longoria is directing an episode of Jane the Virgin this season and everyone is very pleased with this. Also the amount of Brett Dier popping up in these shots would suggest Michael is not going to be dearly departed.

And a ladies only version. I am thrilled to see Bridget Regan kicking it on set.

While we won’t get to see the final season of Girls until early next year, the show is currently wrapping up and these final days are getting the Instagram treatment.

And polaroids to mark Zosia Mamet and Jemima Kirke’s last day shooting.

BrainDead continues to be my favorite show of the summer, but the last two weeks have been lacking any Gustav so hopefully the next episode will rectify this.

Happy You’re the Worst Day! I am so ready.

While we’re on the subject of wine; one of TV’s biggest wine drinkers has a full glass (of grape juice) on the set of Scandal and it sounds like I need to catch up after reading this Entertainment Weekly season 6 post (I keep quitting and coming back).

This sounds like everything I would ever want from a Marnie storyline. She would be so perfect for this.

Matthew Rhys and his glorious beard are guest starring on the final season of Girls. Sadly no details are available yet so time to conjure up your best pairing for him. I am not so secretly hoping he will have something to do with Adam. Fun connection time – Matthew Rhys and Adam Driver shared the stage back in 2012 in Look Back in Anger and this also happened to be the play that got the Americans casting director interested in Rhys for Philip Jennings.

Fun getting ready pictures of Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys’ trip to the White House last night from hair stylist Brian Magallones. Cue every Russian spy joke ever and it would appear that the Obamas are fans of The Americans as they scored a prime spot at the state dinner table. I have so many questions about the bathroom situation considering the size/constricted nature of some of the gowns (going short seems like a wise choice) and as somehow who has talked about how much they love the use of bathrooms particularly in teen shows, I am so here for this.

As with this Lady Gaga in the background facial expression I am also obsessed with what Jemima Kirke is thinking in this moment.

This was another favorite look of the night and Danai Gurira is a spectacular force on the red carpet, as Michonne on The Walking Dead and as a writer. There is another reason for Gurira to celebrate this week as her play Eclipsed received six Tony nominations including writing and for best play.

One thing I love about Instagram and fashion posts is the detail you get to appreciate that wouldn’t normally come across in red carpet shots. Case in point the parts of SJP’s Hamilton inspired look.

This is also magical.

That is definitely a stacked shoe and a whole lot of woah from Mindy Kaling’s footwear.

Peering behind the getting ready curtain with Allison Williams.

Now for her day job and after its best season yet, the Girls team are back to work.

More from Girls and I do love a good use of photoshop with actual old photos of the actors involved.

Now for more White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner including this delightful shot of Michelle Dockery on her way to the event. I adore her yellow Cushnie Et Ochs gown.

This also makes me very happy.

Elevator magic from Abbi and Ilana.

They also found recent Broad City guest star Tracee Ellis Ross gifting us with this selfie.

Jessica Jones cast hangouts courtesy of the Netflix screening event last night. Also reminding me that I still have over half a season of Daredevil to watch.

If you only follow one stylist on Instagram make it Ilaria Urbinati for lots of dudes in suits treats such as this Scott Speedman delight and plenty of ladies looking amazing (including Krysten Ritter from the event in the previous photo).

This is wonderful and bizarre. Thank you, Jessica Chastain.

A very special visit from the woman who inspired Olivia Pope.

While I’m on the subject of very special visitors; the cast of The Crucible were graced with the presence of the one and only Stevie Nicks.

Other significant post-play important hangouts of the week and now I have all the feelings.
