Lots of Orange is the New Black on the TV Insta menu this week including the cast Times Talk and taking part in the New York City Pride parade. Plus You’re the Worst, UnREAL and plenty of style highs to scroll through.
Ruling TV Instagram this week is the Orange is the New Black cast including behind the scenes shots that couldn’t be shared during shooting (because spoilers) and a variety of public appearances.
Unplanned accidental ladysuit black and white reversed co-ordination at the OITNB Times Talk panel.
Danielle Brooks bows out of this talk early (after taking this great picture of Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon) and she has the best reason; she has to go to her other job performing on Broadway in The Color Purple.
Rivaling the OITNB for most prolific cast on Instagram is UnREAL and thankfully everyone looks far happier here than they do behind the scenes on Everlasting.
Constance Zimmer giving great face and boob touching poses as the UnREAL season 2 promo trail continues. Makeup artist Tina Turnbow delivers on the lipstick choice once again.
A very quiet week on Instagram on the TV work front because of Memorial Day weekend. This also means there have been plenty of celebs at the beach/hanging in the sunshine photos splashed across Insta of which we have a couple, but the majority of this week is dedicated to co-star hangouts and cute outfits.
Norman Reedus went to see Eclipsed and this ticks all my supporting a co-star in their other endeavors boxes. Plus a whole lot of patterned outfit delights.
More from the OITNB ladies and they’re celebrating Laverne Cox’s birthday, which also ticks those co-stars who hang out boxes. Plus it is just over two weeks until OITNB returns (Friday, June 17).
So this is not from this week, but as I just caught up with iZombie I have some new Insta accounts to peruse and this is just too wonderful not to include. Robert Buckley in glasses is a really good look.
Maisie Williams is giving me so many flashbacks to my first festival going summer way back when as the 90s continues to dominate. Whenever I see anyone with star earrings like this it makes me regret my non-pierced lobes.
There isn’t so much on set action this week as most shows are on some form of hiatus, but we still have plenty of behind the scenes treats including the UnREAL press tour, Vulture Fest, some new exciting projects, lots of glam and the odd bit of TV making magic.
And it’s double Lupita and Gina as I couldn’t pick between the two photos. This one also gives a better look at Gina Rodriguez’s hiatus hair (and here’s a more dramatic angle) and I love it so much. Such a bold and fantastic cut.
I am behind on every podcast I listen to at the moment, but I am very excited to hear this one from Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson aka 2 Dope Queens from Vulture Fest (which pretty much had my dream lineup).
A before Vulture Fest getting ready shot from Carly Chaikin and this is kinda making me want to figure out how to use Snapchat (my username is frazbelina). Also for more from the Mr Robot panel head here.
We have to wait until August 31 for season 3 of You’re the Worst so for now enjoy this collection of photos from the Vulture Fest Pop Culture Trivia Game Show.
Puppy heaven on The Late Show for Emilia Clarke (love her green dress) and she discussed the recent Free the D Game of Thrones moment. I’m not exactly sure this is what was being asked for (no one wants to hear about warts) but I guess it is a start?
Shiri Appleby didn’t get to play with puppies, but she did pose with this Late Show cushion and the UnREAL cast are doing an excellent job on the Instagram promo front with plenty of photos.
I am also beyond excited about this and Jenny Slate’s outfit is pretty much the platonic ideal of casual wear. Can never go wrong with jeans, Cons, a grey sweater and sunglasses.
Priyanka Chopra flies in gown style when hopping from one event to another and this also reminds me that I am about 5 episodes behind on Quantico (I am behind on so much). This dress/color on her is fantastic.
LadySuitWatch2016 alert! Anne Hathaway was in the fantastic Jenny Lewis video for “One of the Guys” and here she is giving a nod to Lewis in custom Jenny Packham while promoting Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Allison Williams’ style is morphing into Marnie on the final season of Girls while Lena Dunham and Jemima Kirke are accidentally twinning in very similar checks.
Cush Jumbo and Adrienne C. Moore are currently performing in an all-female production of The Taming of the Shrew and there are plenty of ways to adapt Shakespeare as the above clip shows.
PaleyFest, SXSW and new magazine covers are all on this week’s “Out of the Box” menu and these events are the kind that bring out the best of the casual/fancy in-between zone, which post-award season is my favorite kind of dress code. At the Supergirl PaleyFest panel Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist pairs a fantastic hypnotic skirt with a classic black turtleneck and I am so here for this level of fun. And she seems charming as hell to boot (even if I have fallen behind on this show – a mantra I could stitch on a cushion right now #PeakTV).Another case of a super fun ensemble for PaleyFest and Tracee Ellis Ross combines two of my favorite things – sequins and stripes – at the Black-ish panel. The look on her face and pose says it all really. This is how an outfit should make you feel.At the Don’t Think Twice SXSW screening floral and colorful geometric prints ruled supreme. Gillian Jacobs high neck sleeveless dress is mesmerizing and as with Mindy Kaling’s Mindy Project costume sneak peek Kate Micucci is making a strong case for floral rompers. Writer Tami Sagher also looks great and I am so ready for spring frocks.Bows and ascots were all over the recent runway shows and at the My Blind Brother screening Zoe Kazan’s long sleeve dress combines several box tickers; Peter Pan collar, floral and an ascot bow. Kazan has appeareda lot on TV Ate My Wardroberecently and her insight regarding these events is why she is one of my favorite people I follow on Twitter including her reaction to the kinds of questions asked after this particular screening.
Yes this column is all about the ‘looks of the week,’ but I also get why it is important to ask questions about the film in question and not just dress details. And I definitely want to know about technical aspects, particularly all things costume (as anyone who visits this site will be aware). More spring foliage and while I’m not fully on board with sleeve cutouts, Jenny Slate is working this style at the My Blind Brother screening. Post SXSW Slate has gone on a roadtrip with Zoe Kazan and she has been documenting this very fun looking adventure on Instagram.Entertainment Weekly hosted a party at the Spotify House celebrating Mr Robot at SXSW and quite a few of our faves showed up including Abbi Jacobson feeding my leather jacket and pleated skirt craving with Ilana Glazer hitting the t-neck points. This is more casual than the SXSW premiere events and style wise it is similar to the Sundance Film Festival, but switching out knitwear for denim short shorts. This is cute and casual from Tatiana Maslany and perfect for hanging out on our future BFF dates. I am also impressed that even with the MANY hairstyles we have seen her rocking that her actual hair is different from every clone version. This is somewhere between Sarah and Helena’s huge blonde mass of curls.Tatiana Maslany’s boyfriend Tom Cullen captured the perfect “they look just like sisters’ shot of Maslany with Ilana Glazer and Alia Shawkat at the EW Mr Robot SXSW party and Shawkat poses with man of the hour and Mr Robot star Rami Malek. I love the annual Hollywood Reporter ‘Stylist and Stars’ issue and list especially as it comes so soon after a stylists busiest season. Rami Malek is wearing that stunning purple Calvin Klein suit he wore to the Independent Spirit Awards with Ilaria Urbinati and we gave her a shout out at the time because her work with Malek has been incredible.
Celebrating the people who give us plenty to write about when it comes to red carpet style is important and Leesa Evans (who is also a costume designer and has worked on a whole lot of Apatow produced movies such as Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck) appears with Amy Schumer, Jeff K. Kim alongside Michael B. Jordan (who always crushes any suit he is given) and another TV Ate My Wardrobe regular Brie Larson with Cristina Ehrlich. So yes let’s give a whole lot of love to the stylists. It is rare to see a sweatshirt on the cover of a fashion magazine and awkward pulling it down aside, this cover is really great and Kerry Washington is always someone I am happy to see showcased in this manner. Washington discusses her new HBO movie Confirmation as well as the changing TV and film landscape. She talks about feeling invisible in her career pre-Scandal and that she’s had a conversation with Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson regarding this and how “Television changed the game. Coming into people’s houses on a weekly basis is just a different kind of relationship to the public.” The issue is available to buy on both physical and digital newsstands now.
Welcome to this week’s installment of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” and we’ve got sartorial highs, set shenanigans and some very cute animals to share with you.
And not to forget all the dog lovers – Constance Zimmer showing off this little cutie on the set of UnREAL. And now I’m wondering what manipulative role this puppy will be playing.
Also here for random encounters like this one with Chris Noth walking by the Girls set and getting accosted by Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner (also understandable).
Ariana Grande did a superb job on SNL this week accidental swear and all. And now I have This is Not A Feminist Song” stuck in my head for at least another three more days.
Greg Williams has one of the best celebrity photography Instagram accounts and the access he gets at events like Letters Live lends to some very intimate moments; including this amazing shot of Gillian Anderson peaking from behind the curtain.
Last week’s Instagram round-up included the last of this award season, but there are still plenty of behind the scenes treats this week including excellent guest stars, fabulous outfits and shows starting production for their new seasons.
90s nostalgia continues to dominate and the new Cruel Intentions and subsequent casting has hit me right in the sweet spot. And I can guarantee that now I’ve mentioned this project I will be listening to the soundtrack later today.
Award season might be over, but thanks to The Last Man on Earth we still get this week’s dose of Jacob Tremblay being adorable. Well a slightly potty mouth version of Tremblay, but still adorable.
Whenever I see Mindy Kaling with Ellie Kemper I have a sudden hankering to watch Subtle Sexuality so I’ll be back in a moment… Also excellent outfits on both ladies.
There was an homage to Scandal on this week’s Jane the Virgin and I wonder if The Americans is getting this treatment next if these wiggy pictures are anything to go by.
And stylist Ilaria Urbinati still has a whole lot of fittings to do even after the last Oscar gown has been hung up and I can’t wait to see who will wear these beautiful clothes.
“My Name is Jonas” has been stuck in my head all week and there is a very obvious reason for this as social media has been awash with a blizzard by a certain name. So yes, plenty of snow pics from this edition of Behind the Insta-Scenes. Plus Sundance, red lipstick (insert emoji here), guests stars, that touted Friends reunion and more.
Snow plus dogs equals all the adorable especially when the dog is also dressed for the occasion. Cush Jumbo’s fur hood/gloves/big scarf continues the theme of all things winter wear this week on TV Ate My Wardrobe.
Diane Kruger attempts a potentially perilous jump in the air snow pic and if I attempted this the likelihood of sticking the landing would be slim. Excellent coats and mittens choice (wouldn’t expect anything less). What we really want to know is who took the photo?
Popcorn selfies that also need the lipstick emoji because Jenny Slate and Zoe Kazan have picked their color well. Can it survive the movie snacks? The true test of a good product.
In a sea of red carpets at this time of year Sundance stands out because heels are replaced by boots and wool is a predominant fabric. Plus the chance of sheer ruining an ensemble is dramatically reduced. Award season indulges in wish fulfillment aspects of fashion and the fancy pants levels are high; while I love the decadent and intricate details of gowns galore, there is something rather wonderful about the casual cool at the Sundance Film Festival.
What this boils down to is a combination of a several things including a love of all things winter wear – yes I have snow FOMO right now – with a dash of ‘stars they’re just like us’ and the kind of movies that are being showcased. Considering how many different knitted I am wearing right now (including leggings and long bootie socks) combined with how many sweater posts we have produced on TV Ate My Wardrobe it will come as no big surprise that I am in style heaven right now.
April Ludgate was an ultimate sweater queen and there was no doubt that Aubrey Plaza would not disappear from these pages when Parks and Recreation ended. At the Joshy premiere Plaza goes for a cozy ribbed sweater delight paired with skinny jeans, black boots and the always wonderful Jenny Slate. Also killing it with her boots choice, pleated skirt and sweater tee.
Celeb style lounges pretty much sound like the best thing especially when warm coats and boots are up for grabs so Sundance has this perk in the bag too. At Kari Feinstein’s Style Lounge Amandla Stenberg gives a good style lesson in long dress chunky knits; performing the double of super cozy and funky all at once.
Also at the Kari Feinstein Style Lounge Alison Brie shows off fur hooded and toggle coat excellence demonstrating exactly why this is the ideal place for a freebie haul.
Getting whiffs of Grey Gardens and now picturing Chloë Sevigny and Natasha Lyonne as Big and Little Edie as they attend Lena Dunham and Planned Parenthood’s ‘Sex, Politics & Film’ cocktail reception. I mean this as a huge compliment. Sweater heaven continues.
Where else would you see Allison Janney in green leather pants?! Extra points for the chunky roll neck sweater at the Tallulah premiere. Tallulah writer/director Sian Heder is pretty much wearing my platonic ideal of a casual outfit – boots/tights/striped dress – and I am very much looking forward to seeing this film.
Brianna Hildebrand covers all the coat and patterned shirt bases at the First Girl I Loved premiere. Jeans are once again the pants of choice paired with – you guessed it – black boots.
To avoid this post being an endless scrolling exercise we’ve put the rest of our favorite Sundance looks in the gallery below. Just click on the image for a better look and so many more sweater, outerwear, boots and winter casual attire offerings.
More fancy pants behind the scenes shenanigans with a relaxed edge at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Plus babies, celebrating the return of Agent Carter and some A+ 70s outfits.
Will Forte showed that his new half-shaved look wasn’t just a onetime TCA affair (his entire body is like this, yep everything) and gave Justin Theroux’s expressive eyebrows a workout of Leftovers proportions at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
Award shows can all get a bit much for some. The Jane the Virgin table also featured heavily in reactions to the super adorable Jacob Tremblay. They are all of us.
A very super smiley Liv Tyler on her way to the awards and it is probably a very good thing that she didn’t have to lie down to avoid crease awkwardness.
Also to be filed under “things that seem too magical to be true” is Kroll Show originals Gil and George appearing on The Bachelor live show and Jenny Slate filming her reaction. Yep, I still miss Kroll Show, but I am thrilled that Gil and George are still out there in the world.
More adorable babies and hitting that ‘cast members who still hang out after their show has finished’ sweet spot. Also Dave Annable wins best Instagram caption contest this week.
A smorgasbord of pattern clashing and bold color from the many outfit changes for Mindy Kaling on The Mindy Project. Even by this shows standards this is a lot for one day and it’s hard to pick a favorite; edging toward the floral sweater and pajamas with the dragonfly dress also wrestling for top place.
While I’m on the subject of jeans – I am coveting these ones Gina Rodriguez is wearing hard and the whole 70s vibe of this outfit is ticking all the boxes.
Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2015” costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking; we want to celebrate the work of television’s best costume designers.
Now is the turn of a huge range of shows we have been watching this year from network, cable and streaming with comedy, drama and all those other hard to categorize scripted offerings. There has been so many fantastic individual moments that we have had to split this post into two otherwise the scrolling would be endless.
Here is Part 2 of the standout costuming moments in 2015.
Camo Queen
Diane Lockhart is the ultimate when it comes to power dressing in the office – make sure you have at least one piece of statement jewelry – and she manages to transfer this skill to the snowy hunting climate working the all camouflage and furry hat getup like no other.
The Morning After the Night Before Award
Looking dudes killing it with their cardigan, plaid and most importantly bathrobe attire in the season 2 premiere. Patrick also hugged a tree, which was possibly the most adorable TV moment of 2015.
Hair Most Watched
When you want people to believe a HUGE character has been killed off don’t say the actor who plays him has cut his hair because for the next few months every public appearance will be under the hair watch spotlight; whether this be at Wimbledon or an airport (which also happens to be where said show is filmed). Nice suit, Kit. Sunglasses won’t protect your identity.
Inaugural Cary Agos Hot in a Hoodie Trophy
Cary Agos wore his hoodie recently much to our delight and yet we are going to give his prize to the one and only Matt Murdock who took this look to new shirtless levels in Daredevil. Rosario Dawson’s Claire also does casual cool ever so well.
Clothing Most Lived In
It would be remiss if while I was on the subject of hoodie wearers if I didn’t mention Elliot from Mr Robot and it just so happens that I started watching this yesterday (three episodes in and all I want to do is watch the rest). Elliot’s hoodie is very much part of his being and he pulls his hood up at any given opportunity. If a person could live in their clothing then Elliot would definitely live in his black hoodie with his black backpack as his home away from home.
How to Work a Sleeveless Hoodie
This is NOT A GOOD LOOK outside of a boxing movie (and even then I would probs give it a pass) and yet there is something so mesmerizing about Lee Pace in this getup. The same can be said for pretty much all of his Halt and Catch Fire costuming (dude even makes an all white suit and tee work) and this is one show I am so glad I went back to. For actual style inspiration check out everything Donna.
Best Mode of Transport
Amy Schumer’s “Last Fuckable Day” sketch was sadly all too accurate, but most of the time it is better to laugh than cry and that is exactly what Inside Amy Schumer did with this moment and many others over the super strong season 3. And Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes a rowboat look cool as fuck. Is there nothing this woman can’t do?
Smackdown of the Year
There’s a lot that can be said about the relationship dynamics on Jane the Virgin; the Villanueva women are guaranteed to get me crying at least once an episode and I am firmly in the Team Michael camp. There is one relationship that has gone from antagonistic to friendly with a whole dose of it’s complicated in-between and the Jane/Petra situation is the one which intrigues me the most. In Chapter 20 the pair entered the fantasy wrestling ring and it was as much fun as the leather wresting attire that a pregnant Jane was wearing. Petra didn’t look too shabby in her liquid silver jumpsuit. Jane the Virgin is particularly good at mixing the soapy/fantasy elements with real world in both content and costuming; this smackdown episode showcases these elements.
The Reality Show I Wish Was Real
2015 saw the end of several TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites including Kroll Show, which bowed out before it hit any kind of slump. There are many sketches that could have filled this slot – PubLIZity being a close contender – and yet it was this one off Farley piece that has me randomly saying “Look like dis.” Chelsea Peretti and Jenny Slate were my ideal Kroll Show guest stars and this included both women much to my delight.
Unexpected Character Inspiration
More reasons to adore Tatiana Maslany as not only did she deliver yet another fantastic new clone to the Orphan Black table, but she also got her initial inspiration from one of favorite places (as related to the above choice). Maslany told The LA Times that “Krystal was different because she was meant to die in the first episode. I was really into Kroll Show at the time. And I was doing PubLIZity. I was wandering around the set as Krystal in that voice, and they were, like, “We can’t kill her.” Then we started to develop her into a full character and not just me doing Jenny Slate.”
Outfit Most Inspired by Lindsay Weir
Much like Lindsay Weir, Rachel on UnREAL pretty much had her army green jacket glued to her and while Rachel’s life is definitely more of a mess there is certain Lindsay quality to her.
How to get Dressed in a Super Sexy and Snarky Manner
The Good Wife gave us the TV equivalent of blue balls squandering both Finn and Jason; instead having Alicia hook up with Johnny and Peter. At least the latter delivered on this perfect giving none of the fucks moment.
Stripes Delight
A classic look is classic no matter the decade and Virginia’s striped tee and pants ensemble on Masters of Sex is just that. If Emma Stones stripes and polka dots is my platonic ideal of an outfit then this is a close runner-up.
Most Old Hollywood
No one looks more killer (in more ways than one on this occasion) than Lady Gaga as The Countess on American Horror Story: Hotel capturing all that is glam and seductive about Old Hollywood.
Finding the Ideal Location for an Outfit that Looks Like a Painting
Every episode of Elementary is a costuming dream and Joan’s fashion palette is full of patterned delights including this stunning Victoria Beckham shirt dress; it looks like a shot of springtime against the snowy backdrop. There are several shows which use the winter shooting schedule to their advantage and Elementary is on this list (The Americans and Hannibal are two others).
International Assassin of the Year
There could only be one and the meaning behind Kevin Garvey’s suit – which Justin Theroux fits rather nicely – plays out in an incredibly surreal way in one of televisions best episodes of 2015 as The Leftovers hit new bonkers and brilliant heights. How to Make a Silly Looking Prop Look Entirely Serious
I mean it still looks pretty silly, but I don’t want to say that too loud as Keri Russell is giving killer side eye and it’s pretty terrifying. This is also one of Elizabeth’s best wigs of the season (which is actually a slightly less wavy repeat from S2). Blonde is definitely working for her.
Unexpected Sylvia Plath Quote Usage
Master of None took one of my favorite passages from any book and used it in an unexpected way that was so unbelievably perfect. Yes I burst into tears at the reading and portrayal of the fig tree passage from The Bell Jar. Here is that incredible quote in full.
“I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn’t quite make out. I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn’t make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.”
