Prints, Jumpsuits and Red Dancing Lady Dresses at Summer TCA

3 Aug

The Television Critics’ Association 2017 Summer press tour is currently in its second week and to stop “Out of the Box” from being super long, I’ve decided to do a separate post dedicated to the panel attire that has caught my attention.

One key thing when picking out an outfit for TCA is how it will look sitting down because that’s what you’re gonna be doing and most of the pictures will be from this angle. Occasionally there will be the entrance, arrival or party shots, but the only guarantee is that sitting down one.

Also you don’t want to be going too formal; think perfect daytime attire such as fancy office or even something that would be wedding guest appropriate. There aren’t strict rules for these kinds of events and there is plenty of scope for getting it right. As you will see from looks below.Outlander is back next month (!) with Jamie and Claire separated by time and at the panel they revealed when you can expect to see them reunited. Caitriona Balfe chose my favorite kind of look for TCA – see also here – in a fabulous print. This Marni frock looks great sitting down and a bold pattern is always a winner.Balfe’s onscreen Outlander daughter Sophie Skelton also went the print route and one issue with the whole sitting down panel wear is that it can be the ultimate tease; sometimes we only get a glimpse. But this is where Instagram comes in.

A post shared by Sophie Skelton (@sophie.skelton) on

Because we get behind the scenes swishy shots like this one and it turns out what I thought was a blouse and skirt is actually this dress by Maje. Instagram really has made hunting down pieces of clothing/make-up that much easier.
Confession; I have never seen Everwood so the big reunion panel didn’t have the same emotional effect on me, but I do appreciate a cast that likes each other this much. And Emily VanCamp’s pajama-adjacent floral jacket paired with skinny jeans and heels gets two enthusiastic thumbs up from me.Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Vella Lovell gives great jumpsuit in this bold green number and yet I still haven’t acquired my first jumpsuit. Still a 2017 style goal.

I fell down a Crazy Ex-Girlfriend song hole on YouTube a couple of weeks ago and it was wonderful and after reading the panel highlights I am now even more excited for season 3. It feels like Sonequa Martin-Green is giving me that look because she knows I’m gonna moan about the color of her shoes, which I was going to. But also red Louboutin soles are great for sitting down shots because generally you will see that flash of color.

Also that floral dress is delightful and I would love to know what shade/brand of lipstick she is wearing.
Speaking of red soles and Hayley Atwell demonstrates my point perfectly at the Starz panel for the Howard’s End miniseries. A co-production with the BBC and this cast is fabulous; I will follow Atwell wherever she goes and Matthew Macfadyen and Tracey Ullman definitely make this an enticing project.

There is of course another very famous version of Howard’s End and while I’m not a huge Merchant Ivory fan it will be interesting to see if the mini-series can step out of shadow of the 1992 Oscar winning film. Girlfriend Experience co-creator Amy Seimetz shows how a bold color pump can brighten up any outfit and I’m very into the whole shirt buttoned all the way up thing at the moment. And of course ladysuits.First of all I think this shot is pretty funny in that it looks like Ioan Gruffudd and Joanne Froggatt are being proclaimed as liars.

This is of course the name of their new Sundance show and I also love that Froggatt’s red Johanna Ortiz frock is giving off serious dancing lady emoji vibes. Gruffudd scrubs up very well and his beard game is strong. Also I miss his show where he couldn’t die. That was fun.The women of Top of the Lake: China Girl did not coordinate as well Nicole Kidman’s other co-stars from The Beguiled and this covers the spectrum of panel attire with Elisabeth Moss leaning into pattern delights in Camilla and Marc, Gwendoline Christie wearing menswear inspired cool, Nicole Kidman doing her usual ruffled frock thing and Alice Englert leaning maybe a little too casual.

For more summer TCA style head here and come back tomorrow for another bumper “Out of the Box.”

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

25 May

There isn’t so much on set action this week as most shows are on some form of hiatus, but we still have plenty of behind the scenes treats including the UnREAL press tour, Vulture Fest, some new exciting projects, lots of glam and the odd bit of TV making magic.

At last I meet her! Gina Rodriguez @hereisgina at @eclipsedbway!

A post shared by Lupita Nyong'o (@lupitanyongo) on

Dream pairing alert and can someone cast Lupita Nyong’o and Gina Rodriguez in something? Please and thank you. Bonus excellent outfit points.

And it’s double Lupita and Gina as I couldn’t pick between the two photos. This one also gives a better look at Gina Rodriguez’s hiatus hair (and here’s a more dramatic angle) and I love it so much. Such a bold and fantastic cut.

I am behind on every podcast I listen to at the moment, but I am very excited to hear this one from Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson aka 2 Dope Queens from Vulture Fest (which pretty much had my dream lineup).

More Kevin Garvey Leftovers beard evidence (and according to the panel they have just finished shooting the Texas section of season 3).

A before Vulture Fest getting ready shot from Carly Chaikin and this is kinda making me want to figure out how to use Snapchat (my username is frazbelina). Also for more from the Mr Robot panel head here.

We have to wait until August 31 for season 3 of You’re the Worst so for now enjoy this collection of photos from the Vulture Fest Pop Culture Trivia Game Show.

While we’re at it here is a nice reminder of way back when and that shooting season 3 will be underway very soon.

Puppy heaven on The Late Show for Emilia Clarke (love her green dress) and she discussed the recent Free the D Game of Thrones moment. I’m not exactly sure this is what was being asked for (no one wants to hear about warts) but I guess it is a start?

Shiri Appleby didn’t get to play with puppies, but she did pose with this Late Show cushion and the UnREAL cast are doing an excellent job on the Instagram promo front with plenty of photos.

Cute dresses and shoes ahoy! And we are under two weeks away from new UnREAL (returns Monday, June 6).

I am also beyond excited about this and Jenny Slate’s outfit is pretty much the platonic ideal of casual wear. Can never go wrong with jeans, Cons, a grey sweater and sunglasses.

At work:) #TopoftheLake2

This week’s “Behind the Insta-Scenes” should be renamed “Things I Am Very Excited About.”

Priyanka Chopra flies in gown style when hopping from one event to another and this also reminds me that I am about 5 episodes behind on Quantico (I am behind on so much). This dress/color on her is fantastic.

LadySuitWatch2016 alert! Anne Hathaway was in the fantastic Jenny Lewis video for “One of the Guys” and here she is giving a nod to Lewis in custom Jenny Packham while promoting Alice Through the Looking Glass.

What is probably going to end up as the musical event of the year took place over the weekend and this week’s Instagram round-up kicks off with this seminal moment. Plus the usual TV season beginnings, endings and everything in-between as there are a whole lot of shows wrapping up and just getting started.

This was a huge weekend for HBO, but rather than dragons it is Beyoncé dominating pop culture conversation after she released her visual tour de force album Lemonade. There is the massive cultural impact as well as the more surface level aspects to pore over like every outfit Beyoncé wears throughout.

Plus plenty of celebrity cameos including TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite Amandla Stenberg and she shared this very cool looking shot.

Zendaya also appeared in Lemonade and instead of a moment from the shoot, here she is enjoying the broadcast of this incredible visual and musical feat.

Lots of shows wrapping up this week with Scandal being one of them and the sight of Angela Bassett is enough to get me to check back in for the finale (although it looks like she might have been there in a non-acting capacity).

There was a lot of wine on The Good Wife this week even by Alicia’s standards and here is fantastic shot of a laughing Julianna Margulies with a glass of red (or most likely grape juice).

Broad City finished its third season last week and here is a very cute photo of Abbi and Ilana from filming the finale.

The UnREAL cast continue to deliver with set treats including this shot of new guy cast member Ioan Gruffudd and Michael Rady in formal attire.

A couple of things – I love that Margaret Qualley hangs out with Liv Tyler (who I also think could easily play her sister) and this is a reminder that The Leftovers will soon start shooting its third (and final *sob*) season.

Meanwhile, Justin Theroux continues to work on his fabulous hiatus beard.

Costuming on The Bridge: Sonya Cross and Steven Linder

1 Oct

Season 1 of The Bridge comes to an end this week and while Diane Kruger’s red carpet and street style is often a point of discussion here at TV Ate My Wardrobe, it’s the costuming of her character Sonya Cross that I will be taking a look at today. Sonya isn’t the only one who has a specific look on The Bridge and Steven Linder’s smart rodeo wear adds another layer of intrigue to his character.

This article discusses the events of The Bridge prior to the finale.

The Bridge Steven Linder and Sonya Cross

While it has never been explicitly mentioned in dialogue on The Bridge, Sonya has Asperger’s syndrome and what she wears is a direct reflection of that. The one item that Sonya wears each week is the leather jacket in the above photo and it’s a fascinating item as it’s completely different from everything else she wears. This jacket has so much detail that in week 12 I’m still noticing embellishments that I haven’t picked up on before. The horse is one of the more obvious details, as is the leopard print on the shoulders and this is all down to costume designer Anna Terrazas who modified a leather jacket that was found in a Los Angeles vintage store. These changes include aging and distressing the piece to make it look well worn.

The backstory of the jacket is that it belonged to Sonya’s murdered sister and Terrazas explains that as a piece of clothing it “doesn’t make sense for what she does as a detective or who she is, but the whole idea is that it has sentimental value and is worn in memory of her sister.” This process wasn’t a solo one and Terrazas worked with a team to create this costuming centerpiece and this is evident by how many different details there are. The horse isn’t a mystery as Sonya’s sister loved horses but other details like the different tiger imagery, the faded star and the duct tape are more ambiguous. There was great distress from Sonya in the penultimate episode when she found out that her sister’s Bronco was beyond repair and she mourned this as if she had lost her sister all over again. It doesn’t help that her replacement car doesn’t have a tape deck.

Marco mirrored this behavior as he wore the hoodie of his dead son Gus and slept in his bed to preserve the memory of him.

Sonya tape

Anna Terrazas explains that Sonya is a “very uniform person and does the same routine every day” and this is reflected in the rest of what she wears. The jacket is very much part of her daily wardrobe and it’s easily the most flamboyant thing in her wardrobe as everything else is in basic neutral tones; there are no bold colors here. In one way this is similar to how I would describe Scandal’s Olivia Pope’s costuming but the big difference here is their jobs and what image they need to portray. Everything about Sonya’s clothes screams function as she wears shirts in white, grey, black and light blue, always pants and flat shoes. Sonya is not dressing up for anyone.

The Bridge Sonya Cross

Steven Linder is socially awkward in his mannerisms and the way he speaks but he also takes pride in how he dresses even if his facial hair is a tad on the unruly side. Linder believes that he has a calling to save young women and his is one of the stranger aspects of The Bridge. He mumbles but he also tries to present himself in a manner which will make his rescue missions less scary – cast your mind back to the first episode and it is clear that he can be a foreboding figure. The iron that he uses to press his shirts also became a murder weapon as he was attacked in his own home, serving a purpose that the manufacturer did not intend.

The Bridge Steven Linder

When the serial killer story took over the middle part of the season, Linder was pushed to the sides and while we know why he thinks he has this calling there is also much about him that is still a mystery. What he did last week was act as a conduit between Sonya and Marco; giving the pair a reason to work together again and to get Marco out of his period of despair.

Oh and Steven Linder will totally wear his best suit to make a proposal even if it makes no sense in that kind of heat. Linder is as buttoned up as his shirt and by giving him such a distinct look he stands out even when he doesn’t want to.

the Bridge Steven Linder

At the same time as I started The Bridge I was also watching Top of the Lake and it helps a great deal that Thomas M. Wright is playing incredibly different characters in both of these projects. Wright’s Steven Linder mannerisms, speech pattern, costuming and hair style show no similarities to Top of the Lake’s Johnno; as viewer this helps with the whiplash that can occur when one actor features in two distinct worlds and I would say that Wright has been one of the breakout stars of the year.

Emmys 2013 Red Carpet: The Best of the Monochromes

23 Sep

Last night the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards took place in Los Angeles and the show was a mixed bag featuring unnecessary extended musical numbers, winners both predictable and surprising, a seemingly random dedication to 1963 and a band that played the winners off in record time (apparently a performance by Elton John is more important than the actual awards themselves). The direction felt all over the place and if it wasn’t for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler the awards opener would have been a huge dud (please host the Golden Globes again).

Luckily the fashion on the red carpet wasn’t such a shambles and first up is the women who are rocking the big monochromatic trend.

Anna Gunn Emmys 2013

Anna Gunn won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a drama category; a well deserved winner for that walk of despair into the swimming pool and her subsequent breakdown on the first half of Breaking Bad’s final season. Wearing Romona Keveza, Gunn looks stunning in a dress that is simple and elegant.

Merritt Wever Emmys

Merritt Wever! Another winner and not just for Nurse Jackie as she gave the best speech of the night that got straight to the point “Thank you so much! I’ve gotta go, bye.” While Wever doesn’t look all that convinced in the above photo, I think she looks incredible and I’m so happy that she won. Bonus points for an amazing lip color choice and for being generally awesome. It’s already been said on here countless times but can Elizabeth stay on New Girl please?

Elisabeth Moss Emmys

Breaking the “if you wear a monochromatic dress you will win” cycle is Elisabeth Moss and I’m pretty bummed out that both Top of the Lake and Mad Men went home with nothing. Moss is a vision in Andrew Gn and her blonde choppy cut continues to serve her well as this awards cycle is the best we’ve seen Moss yet. As with Wever, Moss has opted for a bold red lip color and is the key to setting off a great black and white ensemble.

Morgan Saylor Emmys

Now to one of the younger stars of the red carpet and Homeland’s Morgan Saylor; this Honor gown is perfect for an 18 year old as it’s not too prom but it also doesn’t age her up to 30. One thing I would change is her hair as it looks a little too casual for an event like this, nicely played with the red lips and makeup that isn’t too severe though. I’m hoping that season 3 of Homeland will give her a story that is less Kim Bauer like, she’s a really great young actress and I don’t want her bogged down in contrived melodrama.

Julianna Margulies Emmy 2013

Julianna Margulies was on hand to present because somehow she wasn’t nominated for The Good Wife and so this Reed Krakoff dress is a little more on the relaxed side. Yes it resembles a fancy bed sheet, but sometimes this can work too and maybe I’m just very excited by the return of The Good Wife next Sunday – yes on the same night as the Breaking Bad finale – but I think she looks fantastic.

Critics’ Choice 2013 TV Awards Red Carpet Highlights: Diane Kruger and Elisabeth Moss

11 Jun

Last night the Critics’ Choice 2013 TV Awards took place in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with Parks and Recreation favorite Retta hosting the proceedings. While Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad tied in the Best Drama Series category, there is also a tie here at TV Ate My Wardrobe for best red carpet look between Elisabeth Moss who has featured multiple times in our “Look of the Week” and Diane Kruger, who will most likely become a weekly staple of this column.

elisabeth moss critics choice

The haircut that Elisabeth Moss got backstage on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon coupled with the blonde color continues to be a defining look (and I think we can put Moss in the group of women who look better with shorter hair, a group I adore). It sets her apart from the character we are so used to seeing her play, a character that has to be tough around the edges because of her job and the decade she is working in. This makes Moss look more youthful and fun, something that is missing from Peggy most of the time.

The plunging pink Valentino prom style dress suits this event and really compliments this new hairstyle. Moss has opted for toned down makeup, but I think a strong lip color would really set it off.

Elisabeth Moss took home the award for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Movie for Top of the Lake and she joked that “I’ve never won an award for acting. I have to remember not to thank anyone from Mad Men!”

Diane Kruger critics choice red carpet

Diane Kruger is a fashion icon both on and off the red carpet because she takes chances but also has an eye for Old Hollywood glamour and this black strapless Nina Ricci gown falls into the latter camp. The sweetheart neckline evokes Jessica Rabbit and the retro inspired waves give the impression that Kruger is a 1950s starlet. The strong red lip color adds to this look and it’s a shame that the effect of the Manolo Blahnik pumps is lost in this shot as they blend into the red carpet. Diane Kruger’s new show The Bridge debuts on July 10 and as I have mentioned previously this is one of my most anticipated summer shows. Kruger took to the stage with co-star Demián Bichir to present at the awards.
