This week has seen the spotlight get turned on the amazing stylists who get actors red carpet ready with the annual Hollywood Reporter Top 25. We covered the issue here, but we’ve got party highlights and some treats from the number 1 name on that list throughout this post.
Plus SXSW delivers on the exact kind of outfits I am looking to now that spring is finally here (sorry for those who had snow this week). There’s also SNL musical performances and great late night outfits to enjoy. At the Hollywood Reporter Power Stylist dinner Sarah Paulson shows just why Karla Welch is a sartorial force to be reckoned with as she makes this peach Prada embellished frock look so much more low maintenance than it is. Love the Chinese style collar and strong brow.
Posing with the man of the hour – also wearing Prada – and showing that he’s also got the post-awards fashion sorted is Mahershala Ali. Such a strong shirt pattern choice and he’s making a statement that he’s fabulous. Karla Welch is also good at dressing herself (which is a weird sentence to write) in this simple and summery long Rosie Assoulin gown. Also points for sensible flats for both Welch and Busy Philipps; who I am loving in all white. This night also provided A+ Busy Instagram stories with a guest appearance from Sarah Paulson who playfully mimicked Busy’s penchant for saying ‘guys.’In the way Sundance is to knits and coats, SXSW delivers on prints and super cute summer frocks. Jenny Slate is a SXSW regular and always delivers on the exact kind of outfits I would also want to wear (aside from the shoes his time). Bonus pocket points too! A busy SXSW for Noël Wells with premieres for Mr. Roosevelt and Infinity Baby. The above is at the latter and the matching star blast separates paired with black boots gives this look an edge. I really like Wells in season 1 of Master of None and I’m looking forward to seeing both of these projects, but especially Mr. Roosevelt as Wells writes, directs and stars in it.More Karla Welch picks showing just how versatile she is as a stylist as it isn’t all just award season and at the American Gods panel Emily Browning looks incredible in super floral Miu Miu and chunky Prada heels.
My intrigue levels for American Gods are set to high and while I don’t know the source material, the cast and creative team sell it to me alone. Plus this new trailer is giving me a whole lot of costume design thoughts already. At the Win it All premiere Stephanie Beatriz gives great wide-leg pants in stunning cobalt blue paired with a funky strapless top. I just bought some wide-leg pants and while I have no idea what shoes I’m gonna wear them with seeing Beatriz in this trend with this styling is giving me some ideas. Also going baggy is Lorde doing a full oversized suit thing at the Elvis Duran Z100 morning show and to keep with this week’s stylist theme she is another Karla Welch client.
Lorde performed on SNL and “Green Light” has been on repeat since it got released. More high-waisted/wide-leg and the backless sparkly top is everything.
Keri Russell loves a bit of leather for late night and much like myself she loves a bit of Grease 2 (it is the better movie, don’t @ me).
For Seth Meyers she went all black with a splash of leopard print with her choice of Louboutins. And because I love all things celebrity real estate this sneak peek at her house (with bonus Matthew Rhys and baby in the background) is ticking those boxes. Makeup artist Tina Turnbow also gave a close up look of her work and I love a smoky eye.
There are two clips from the Seth Meyers interview; one is about the much talked about Matthew Rhys episode of Girls and this is the one that you can watch on a whole lot of entertainment/style websites. So we’ve opted for the second clip in which Keri Russell talks about the time she met Matthew Rhys ten years before The Americans and forgot about it until he reminded her.
This week’s “Out of the Box” is sponsored by BFFS, super shiny dresses, a whole lot of festive feelings and a very fun hair accessory in an all-New York event edition.
You can also check out the Best of 2016 “Out of the Box” magazine edition and there really have been a slew of fantastic covers this year. Hooray for print media.
Happy Holidays! By now if you are a regular TV Ate My Wardrobe reader you will know how strongly I feel about Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps’ friendship and that when Michelle Williams is in awards contention this means maximum time with this pair. At this event Williams confirmed what makes this relationship so special:
“I’m so in love with her. She’s proof that the love of your life does not have to be a man! That’s the love of my life right there.”
Williams tends to wear Louis Vuitton and at a screening of Manchester by the Sea in New York City hosted by Louis Vuitton she wore Michael Kors. Just kidding; it is Louis Vuitton and this is the ideal amount of sheer. Coordinating with her BFF, Philipps is also doing the all-black thing and layering it up like a smart person in this weather.
Bonus Instagram time! Philipps gave another gift in this friendship department (and thanks Faye for sending it my way) while adding to the evidence that the early ’00s was not a good time for fashion. It is hard to put into words just how happy Sarah Paulson in THE most sparkly pink and red Dolce & Gabbana dress makes me, but just know that every time it has appeared on my Twitter timeline (which is a lot) I have squealed with delight. This is perfect and challenges her green sparkly Prada Emmy gown for fave dress she has worn this year (and I love that dress a lot).
And see the sequins in motion as Sarah Paulson tells Seth Meyers about her fear of flying. I could stare at this dress for hours. From a very pink frock to a hint of this color and Viola Davis’ Cinq dress is classic without being dull at a screening of Fences in New York with a very festive backdrop. Instant feelings of joy.Speaking of which and the Hidden Figures press tour continues with another Janelle Monáe ensemble to bring the cheer. Googly eyes as a hair accessory is something I would have never considered, but celebrity hairstylist Nikki Nelms is all over it. It is an out of the box (drink because I said the column name) approach that really works and paired with this outfit works like a charm.
The Bally Resort 2017 frock gives Swinging ’60s vibes and paired with studded Christian Louboutin pumps gives the whole thing an edge. Also black tights forever.
On Instagram Janelle Monae gives us a close up of the googly eyes, her fabulous pink lipstick and a very warm looking black and white coat, which is probably very much needed in New York right now.
Welcome to this week’s installment of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” and we’ve got sartorial highs, set shenanigans and some very cute animals to share with you.
Someone needs to make a movie with these three ladies as triplets. Tom Cullen has already come up with the tagline. Please and thank you.
When the Mr Robot dudes go away for SXSW the ladies get their puzzle on.
Lupita Nyong’o serving up every level of fashion BAMF and turning the backstage area of Late Night with Seth Meyers into her very own runway.
I love Aya Cash so much.
Not one, but three kittens! Thank you Brooklyn Nine-Nine for this furry treat.
And not to forget all the dog lovers – Constance Zimmer showing off this little cutie on the set of UnREAL. And now I’m wondering what manipulative role this puppy will be playing.
By now you will probably know how much I love it when co-stars hangout off set and this is the perfect example of that. All the warm feelings
Also here for random encounters like this one with Chris Noth walking by the Girls set and getting accosted by Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner (also understandable).
I haven’t caught any Vinyl yet, but I can see how incredible Bobby Canavale’s hair is and how much work it takes to get the look.
Another amazing Mindy Project costume moment and a really great spring romper from Moschino.
Ariana Grande did a superb job on SNL this week accidental swear and all. And now I have This is Not A Feminist Song” stuck in my head for at least another three more days.
Greg Williams has one of the best celebrity photography Instagram accounts and the access he gets at events like Letters Live lends to some very intimate moments; including this amazing shot of Gillian Anderson peaking from behind the curtain.
If there was a “Behind the Insta-Scenes” theme this week it would probably be #SquadGoals. A lot of shows are now back to work and getting their promo on as fall season looms, but there are also plenty of vacation shots occurring.
Brie Larson joined Instagram last week and this human pyramid of lady greatness is one of her first photo offerings. The only time I’ve been involved in one of these was at Reading Festival about 10 years ago and surprisingly no one was hurt (I am ultimate clumsy). I did see a far messier one at the wedding I attended this weekend, which is what happens at 1 am. Larson also shared this excellent shot from the Jenny Lewis “One of the Guys” video.
And the inspiration! Oh to be on vacation in the Hamptons with Amy Schumer and JLaw.
Sarah Jessica Parker isn’t bored of Carrie Bradshaw’s signature drink.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is guest starring on the forthcoming season premiere of The Mindy Project as (spoiler alert) Mindy’s husband. Say what?! Well, Mindy is very not pregnant in this party shot (super hot dress BTW) and Sliding Doors is the inspiration for this alt-reality setting. If you read our Felicity discussion posts you will know I love a ‘road not traveled’ exploration. Although interestingly enough I have never seen Sliding Doors the whole way through.
Because Mindy Lahiri is most definitely pregnant and wearing a very fetching Salvador Perez orange ensemble while shooting a subway scene. This is only adding to my current craving for orange clothes. Kaling is really great at showing sneak peeks of the amazing costuming and hopefully the premiere date will be announced soon.
This image of Taraji P. Henson is everything and needs to be printed on t-shirts/mugs/fridge magnets.
Double Cookie for your pleasure this week and Empire is another highly anticipated returning show.
Alan Cumming is back in full Eli Gold garb and hopefully this caption means big things will be happening for this character in season 7.
The first full length You’re the Worst promo was released this week just as shooting the second season comes to a close. I heart this cast so hard.
Break out the dance party as Playing House is back. Here is a stunning photo of Lennon Parham laughing it up backstage at Late Night with Seth Meyers.
It is Jon Stewart’s last week on The Daily Show and I’m feeling pretty emotional about it to be honest. Going to watch it being filmed back in 2010 was an experience I never imagined I would have and it was even more wonderful than expected. Here is the always incredible Jessica Williams with her boss in the background. Enjoy this truly excellent segment from last night’s episode.
There are going to be plenty of these kinds of shots this week (I expect Instagram to be awash with Daily Show photos tomorrow) and Amy Schumer is doing the waiting in the wings thing before she goes on. Schumer also explained just how the JLaw boat hangout went down.
Selfie love from the Orange is the New Black ladies all in costume.
And another OITNB delight to round off this week’s “Behind the Insta-Scenes.”
Let’s start the week with a treat for the ears and Matt Bomer’s version of D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does it Feel)” from Magic Mike XXL. Both this final solo and his cover of “Heaven” are on the Magic Mike XXL soundtrack and while I will probably have “Pony” stuck in my head forever (which is fine) these are two of the standout musical moments from the film.
You will have to go watch Magic Mike XXL to see the actual performance (and it is well worth it) and here is an accurate representation of my face throughout:
Just look at how great his all black outfit with a hint of sparkle is.
This isn’t the first time Bomer has sung on screen; he played Blaine’s brother on Glee and even though I haven’t seen the whole episode I did buy their version of Somebody That I Used to Know. And yes I do sing along in an enthusiastic (read terrible) manner whenever it comes on my shuffle. Plus there is this super adorable singing moment from the season 1 White Collar gag reel.
Matt Bomer discussed the reason why he ended up singing in the sequel on his recent Late Night with Seth Meyers appearance as well as his college days with co-star Joe Manganiello.
Listen to both “Untitled (How Does it Feel)” and “Heaven” below and for a very good time go watch Magic Mike XXL.
Plus here are a couple of essays which explore what makes Magic Mike XXL such a good experience from Anne Helen Petersen and Roxane Gay.
Just because Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler are no longer on Saturday Night Live it doesn’t mean the end for this pairing and when Poehler appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers they took this opportunity to both get behind his desk and fire off a much needed edition of “Really!?! with Seth and Amy.”
Amazing and much needed. Please make this a regular thing.
Also on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week Channing Tatum discussed some of his answers from his Reddit AMA and it is as glorious as the original thing (though no mention of Gilbert).
Not only did Lizzy Caplan explain why she is better than Jon Hamm on Jimmy Kimmel Live! which led to a whole WB discussion, but she also answered the nudity questions (thanks again to Caplan and Ruth Wilson for bringing the word ‘Showtits’ into my life) by pointing out all the real life connections as Jimmy’s ex Sarah Silverman is on the show. Silverman’s boyfriend Michael Sheen is Caplan’s co-lead and love interest on Masters of Sex. Oh, Hollywood you do delight me.
Now Lizzy Caplan might be better than Jon Hamm at keeping her job on the WB, but he sure can throw a gummy bear and look super handsome while doing so.
A mostly SXSW “Out of the Box” with a dash of PaleyFest, talk show appearance sartorial highs and the Game of Thrones London premiere.
As with PaleyFest, Comic-Con or the TCA press tour the style on show at SXSW is a whole range of things and it tends to lean towards the casual cool end of the scale because it is Austin after all. Aubrey Plaza ditches her usual print signature and goes for a simple and funky salmon skirt with a white top at the Fresno premiere.
Amy Schumer debuted Trainwreck at SXSW and I cannot wait to see this movie and for Inside Amy Schumer to be back on TV. My personal jumpsuit progression has not changed, but when it does I think I will be start with the all black styling Schumer is perfecting. Vanessa Bayer’s bold floral/rope print skirt with the stripe sweater is ideal levels of pattern clashing.
Melissa McCarthy’s teamed up with Paul Feig again for Spy (the reviews have been very good) and the layering/accessorizing of this outfit is fantastic.
A Rose Byrne double and first up on the Spy red carpet in Thakoon and a very 90s Winona Ryder looking getup down to the lip color.
And at a SXSW cocktail party for Adult Beginners, Byrne has me swooning over this burnt orange blazer.
The cast of Jane the Virgin show off colorful style (ignoring the jeans/electric blazer ensemble) with on screen mother/daughter pair Ivonne Coll and Andrea Nevado lighting up this ensemble shot in bold pink and yellow. For a PaleyFest Jane the Virgin behind the scenes treat head here.
Keri Russell shows her support for Seth Meyers on her shirt as she heads to his show and woah is this a knockout look in skintight leather pants, a tuxedo jacket and a fantastic bold pink lip color – ‘Fever’ by Hourglass (thanks Tina Turnbrow for the color confirmation).
Debuting an all new pixie cut also on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week is Lena Dunham and I’ve got all the short hair feels right now. So much better than her Scandal wig.
Rounding off the week with dude in a suit the ‘Kit Harington smolders in Burberry’ edition at the Game of Thrones premiere in London.
It’s a big week for TV costuming with the return of three TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites The Americans, Scandal and Hannibal. All three of these shows deserve posts of their own and so we’re going to focus on the red carpet with this edition of Out of the Box. There’s been more award shows in the lead up to Sunday’s Oscars including the Costume Designers Guild Awards, we’ve got other premieres, public appearances and the first night of Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Turquoise was on trend at the Costume Designers Guild Awards with Mindy Kaling and Amy Adams wearing variations of this color and Olivia Munn is just as stunning in J. Mendel. It’s a beautiful gown and I really hope we get to see the bolder end of the color spectrum on the red carpet come Sunday.
Mad Men darling Kiernan Shipka also attended the Costume Designers Guild Awards and she’s gone for a very different approach from the turquoise set. This Delpozo ensemble takes florals and checks in two pieces that shouldn’t work but thanks to Shipka’s age and previous sartorial hits, she pulls it off. Stick this on a twenty something and it might come across as too try hard, putting it on a teen and it’s marvelous. Don’t ever change.
I have a weakness for a lady tux – see Angelina Jolie at the BAFTAs – and like Jolie, Keri Russell is wearing a Saint Laurent suit and she has paired it with a super chic sleeveless Balenciaga blouse for The Americans premiere. It’s a really simple and yet elegant look and Russell has the side sweep locked down.
Amy Poehler stopped by the first night of Late Night with Seth Meyers and not only did she tell pretty much the best story about Joaquin Phoenix (which you can watch below), she also got to hang out with Leslie Knope’s number one crush Joe Biden. Black dress, pumps and really great hair give her automatic Out of the Box appreciation.
