Out of the Box: Look of the Week

30 Jun

The pattern theme continues much to my delight and Look of the Week is awash once again with some bold ensembles. It’s summer so this makes total sense.

Plenty of premieres, more awards and July issues of magazines continue to wow. September, you have a lot to live up to.

For some sporty and sparkly chic check out style crush Tatiana Maslany and my article on the new (and wonderful) Netflix series GLOW.At the BET Awards Issa Rae is bold stripe delight in Balmain pairing a blazer with short shorts and sandals. Everything about this look is a dream and Rae tops it off with the perfect pink lipstick. And while we’re on the subject of Issa Rae, here is the season 2 promo poster for Insecure and the premiere date is less than a month away! Never has a poster made me want to go for a swim more than this. Excellent swimsuit choice too.The third week in a row for Zendaya as the Spider-Man: Homecoming promo tour continues. So far there has been a stunning Vogue cover, putting a bird on it and now mixing fun and sophistication in stripes and ruffled Altuzarra.

A velvet trench doesn’t really scream the month of June, but just know I am very much coveting Karen Gillan’s Self Portrait coat dress. This week’s florals come from Jenny Slate at the Despicable Me LA premiere in Alice McCall. The heavy print and fringe makes this dress feel a little rug-adjacent, but the slightly sheer element gives it a much lighter look. Great gold sandals too.At the Younger season 4 premiere, Sutton Foster looks like she came straight from rom-com set in the ’80s in polka dot Saloni. This is of course a compliment of the highest order. In ‘July gives great cover’ news; bow down to Serena Williams and Vanity Fair. After letting my subscription lapse a few months ago, VF is making a great play to get me to sign back up again with two excellent cover stories in a row.

The interview goes into detail about how Serena and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian got together and what Serena did when she found out she was pregnant just before the Australian Open kicked off. A tournament she won without dropping a single set. It is a celebration of all things Serena and I cannot wait to pick up this magazine. In just over two weeks, Game of Thrones returns so get ready for TV talk to be dominated by this juggernaut. First up a super fun Time cover story and design that mixes religious iconography with Pop Art colors and Old Hollywood; you can read all about photographer Miles Aldridge’s concept here. There’s also a little Twin Peaks and my dream to now have Nikolaj Coster-Waldau playing the prime suspect in an Agatha Christie adaptation.

Sophie Turner in Gucci (currently crushing it as the brand of the moment) is my favorite of the portraits in a shot that looks like a fucked up and fashionable fairy tale.

Also over at Vanity Fair they picked out two important details from the piece and the first one is something I cannot wait to see in the new season.Preacher is back and the first two episodes are super fun. Plus Tulip is once again a major TV style crush mixing feminine summer dresses with edgy leather. Ruth Negga has been a regular presence here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and her cover/editorial for Town & Country is another style hit including the above dreamy shot of Negga in Fendi. In the piece Negga talks about how much she loves books and her favorite show growing up was My So-Called Life.

As if I needed another reason to think we could be besties, on a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Negga talked about how much she loves Grease 2, which is also my favorite of the Grease movies. So much so that I even managed to slip a reference to it in this Wonder Woman essay I wrote for Elle.

All my fave actresses talk about Grease 2 on The Tonight Show.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

1 Sep

One of the busiest months of the year in terms of TV and fashion is here so this week’s “Out of the Box” is a fun mix of film festival attire, talk shows and magazine editorials. While I’m on the subject of September and how busy it is you can now also sign up to my weekly newsletter here. The first one is all about this time of year and is an extension of everything TV Ate My Wardrobe.Emma StoneEmma Stone at the Venice Film Festival wearing a delightful floral Giambattista Valli, which is an ideal daytime photocall outfit for La La Land. Paired with suede ochre heels gives this a late 70s feel that I am – in non-shocking news – in love with. I am very excited about this movie and the costume design is already giving me all the heart eyes.Zooey DeschanelGiving off casual cool at Jimmy Kimmel Live! is Zooey Deschanel and I’ve been after a good pair of denim dungarees. To me they are jumpsuit adjacent in that I don’t own a pair and they give me the same clothing related bathroom fears.

On the show Deschanel also looked great in a black ensemble paired with some super sparkly amazing flats and a collar that ticks all the boxes. Plus she talked about how much her daughter loves cheese, her TV directorial debut and the New Girl crossover with Brooklyn Nine-Nine.Aja Naomi KingInterview Magazine continues to deliver on great photoshoots and interviews – well I guess it is the title of the magazine – and this week HTGAWM’s Aja Naomi King chats with OITNB’s Danielle Brooks about their classic training, TV and King’s role in The Birth of a Nation. Also working with Viola Davis sounds as incredible as you probably imagined it would be.

“She brings you in, and it feels like family. When you’re in that kind of family environment, when you’re tasked with doing something difficult, you can allow yourself to be brave because you know you’re surrounded by people that love you, that only want the best for you. From day one, it’s been that wonderful. I was terrified. That first scene we’re in together in the pilot, I was so scared. Here she is, being amazing in this room, and I just want her to think I’m amazing too.”Aya Cash Interview MagAlso in Interview is Aya Cash and I am thrilled You’re the Worst is back for a third season. The premiere episode is really great, made me teary and sparked an important shower related debate.  As with the Aja Naomi King picture Aya Cash nails the disarming black and white shot in stunning fashion.

In the interview Cash discusses how Stephen Falk had to fight for her to get the part of Gretchen, audition rejections, the doors You’re the Worst has opened and what she’d be doing if she wasn’t acting. This also has me very excited:

“I’m starting to produce. I’m developing a project for myself based on one of my mom’s books. I really don’t have a specific idea of where I want my career to go, I just have an idea of wanting to continue to work and work on things that I like and think are good. I don’t need to be crazy rich and crazy famous. I would just like to keep going.”Aya CashThis all-Prada ensemble shot is also fantastic and I couldn’t pick between the two. For more from this Interview shoot head here.Rachel WeiszChunky knit season is upon us and upstate New York is the place for these late summer shoots as The Edit shows with this fantastic Rachel Weisz spread. This turtleneck sweater is perhaps a tad outside my budget and it is still too warm for such garments, but I can dream.Stranger Things kidsStranger Things is one of the undeniable hits of the summer and part of the reason for its success and resonance is the kids at the center of the story. Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo all appeared on The Tonight Show this week timed perfectly for the season 2 pickup announcement. Style wise it has been a lot of Winona (for good reason) on here, but the kids dominated this piece I wrote.

And in real life they are pretty adorable and charming. Outfit wise they are all perfect and Millie Bobby Brown’s dress and flats are super cute. Points for all. Plus she crushes Nicki Minaj’s “Monster” verse.

Can you host?

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

9 Mar

Last week’s Instagram round-up included the last of this award season, but there are still plenty of behind the scenes treats this week including excellent guest stars, fabulous outfits and shows starting production for their new seasons.

90s nostalgia continues to dominate and the new Cruel Intentions and subsequent casting has hit me right in the sweet spot. And I can guarantee that now I’ve mentioned this project I will be listening to the soundtrack later today.

Best Broad City guest star (Part 1).

Best Broad City guest star (Part 2).

Award season might be over, but thanks to The Last Man on Earth we still get this week’s dose of Jacob Tremblay being adorable. Well a slightly potty mouth version of Tremblay, but still adorable.

Whenever I see Mindy Kaling with Ellie Kemper I have a sudden hankering to watch Subtle Sexuality so I’ll be back in a moment… Also excellent outfits on both ladies.

First UnREAL table read for season 2 and I maybe just read Quinn as ‘Queen’ and that also works.

This also has me VERY excited.

Celebrating International Women’s Day on The Good Wife with lots of lady love.

Cuteness overload on the Elementary set. Random aside, but Lucy Liu’s guest appearance on Girls is definitely one of the TV moments of this week.

Priyanka Chopra took over the Tonight Show Instagram and this delightful photo with Questlove.

Crushing it for Essence magazine is Danielle Brooks and this cover shot is also incredible.

There was an homage to Scandal on this week’s Jane the Virgin and I wonder if The Americans is getting this treatment next if these wiggy pictures are anything to go by.

This is certainly a look and probably not one that is good for spy work.

Best TV show tie-in.

Excellent outfit ahoy!

There is still plenty of getting ready for photo shoot shots to behold and this one of Greta Gerwig is stunning.

And stylist Ilaria Urbinati still has a whole lot of fittings to do even after the last Oscar gown has been hung up and I can’t wait to see who will wear these beautiful clothes.

Welcome to another edition of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” and this week we have show crossovers, some sunshine, Parks and Recreation flashbacks, production art and a hilarious Broad City video.

Another Flash/Arrow visit is in the pipeline and here’s Brandon Routh taking a visit to Star City for some suit assistance.

Ben Schwartz continues his Tuesday trip down Parks and Rec memory lane and this week he revisits the days of Entertainment 720. Woah those panda sneakers and major desk chair envy.

Kroll Show took a visit to a very familiar looking bar.

Niece Denise! A Kroll Show double this week as I can’t resist this much fringe.

Ilana is awesome on Broad City, but she is also a terrible person to share a desk with and her colleague Nicole is keeping track of everything. Press play to find out what Ilana has done this time.

The highlight from the latest Tonight Show lip sync battle would definitely please Abbi from Broad City.

Weekend Highlights – Dancing Sharks, Missy Elliott, Lip Sync Battles and Kim’s Sweatshirt

2 Feb

A sport filled weekend with the Australian Open tennis finals and the Super Bowl so while there isn’t any new TV to talk about there are a few highlights of the style and just general ‘what?! amazing!’ I want to mention. Somewhere along the way this took on a bit of a Broad City theme which is on point seeing as I wore my super soft (it really s the softest) Broad City tee this weekend.

First up the moment during the Super Bowl Katy Perry halftime show that looked like we were all taking a collective post-dental surgery trip a la Abbi on last week’s incredible episode of Broad City “Wisdom Teeth” when the dancing sharks appeared.

Katy Perry sharksBingo Bronson has got a couple of new pals to hangout in Whole Foods with and cause mischief.

Broad City Bingo BronsonJust leaving this here for all the joy reasons.

Missy ElliottDespite the news leaking prior to the Super Bowl that Missy Elliott would be joining Katy Perry at some point during the halftime show; her entrance and those opening beats of “Get Ur Freak On” is still an all the prayer hands emoji moment, surprise or not. The less said about Katy Perry’s awkward dancing during this section the better. However, crazy impressed with Perry’s jumping in stacked heels that was immediately not followed by falling over and breaking her ankle during the Lenny Kravitz section of the performance.

The Tonight Show aired a live Super Bowl special last night including another in the series of lip sync battles with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart joining Jimmy Fallon. Normally it is the special guests that take the crown but Jimmy Fallon has a surprise up his sleeve that would make Abbi from Broad City very happy indeed.

And finally…

Kim SearsUnnecessary outrage is an internet staple and one of this week’s biggest non-controversy controversies involved Kim Sears and her apparent potty mouth; saying the word fuck and getting caught on camera is uncouth or something like that. Bit of backstory Kim Sears is an artist who is best known for being tennis player Andy Murray’s fiance and column inches about her have in the past been obsessed with when Murray would finally pop the question (now the they have turned their attention to the wedding and babies of course), her amazing hair (it is amazing) and her courtside style (also amazing). So when Kim let out the odd swear people were SHOCKED. Which, urgh. Kim’s choice of Alexander Wang sweatshirt for yesterday’s final (which Murray sadly lost) was the real winner yesterday and Sears gets all the DGAF points. And yes her hair does look fantastic.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

7 Nov

The start of the month brings magazines galore with cover shoots and editorials making the “Out of the Box” list alongside talk show and red carpet appearances.

Natalie Dormer FlareNatalie Dormer covers Flare and I’m pretty excited to see what she will bring style wise to the Mockingjay press tour that is about to dominate red carpet coverage. For now Dormer is still showing off the remnants of her Hunger Games dramatic hair style and wearing a daring knockout dress that I would love to see come premiere time.

In the interview Dormer offers up some opinion on the different types of roles there are and it is refreshing to see a lack of sugar-coating “We don’t accept women as antiheroes the way we do the men. Unless there’s a family get-out clause. We accept women being complete cunts if they’re doing it for a child.” She also loves playing Moriarty on Elementary and she is very happy with her Game of Thrones character as “The beautiful thing about Margaery is that even though she keeps getting married, she’s not defined by a love interest. And Cressida is defined by her profession and her political beliefs. Since Anne Boleyn, I haven’t played a woman who’s defined by romantic love.”

TimeOutTime Out New York dedicates this week’s issue to comedy with a focus on the “funny women taking over NYC.” This includes Jessica Williams, SNL’s Sasheer Zamata, new Broad City writer Kara Klenk plus Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer. There’s the Catch-22 aspect of why do we have to do a gender specific comedy issue, but at the same time having a cover like this that doesn’t ask “Are Women Funny?” is an improvement.

Claire Danes GlamourBack to editorial and Claire Danes covers the December issues of UK Glamour and wears this fantastic Dolce & Gabbana squirrel skirt and lace top. In the interview she talks ’90s fashion and her explanation bears an echo of an Angela Chase voiceover “I wore a lot of overalls. Baggy clothes were very convenient for my generation. Our bodies were undergoing a terrifying metamorphosis, so it was a relief to put a bag over it all, hide in a sea of clothes.”

Eve HewsonThe Knick’s Eve Hewson attended the Dior hosted Guggenheim International Gala Pre-Party on Wednesday in (and this is not surprising) Dior. Not only does this dress earn the pocket points, it is also a fun play on tweed. I often have black tights dress quandaries (when it hits colder temps I tend to wear them with certain dresses and just say fuck it) and here they don’t detract from the look so maybe I will be less black tights nervy in the future.

Lucy HaleLucy Hale is stunning in red at the CMA Awards and this Romona Keveza frock might be a style best for the Pretty Little Liars star.

Lisa Kudrow Comeback premiereIt is worth repeating that I am beyond excited for the return of The Comeback and at the premiere Lisa Kudrow looks elegant in a Reem Acra dress. The Valerie hair behind her gives her volume that almost reaches Kacey Musgraves CMA Awards heights.

Felicity Jones FallonRounding things off this week with a spin on menswear and Felicity Jones appeared on The Tonight Show this week in a beautiful Dior suit and skinny tie.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

15 Aug

Movie premieres featuring TV husband and wife adorableness, street style, talk show appearances, a sneak peek at new web series and a HFPA event are all included in this edition of “Out of the Box.” Alas there is nothing from the Teen Choice Awards, but the sea of crop tops was kind of uninspiring and even Taylor Swift has been wearing better outfits when leaving the gym (and on The Tonight Show as you will see below).

Aubrey and ChrisOne thing that is always guaranteed to warm my heart is when cast members show their support for their co-stars other projects. Chris Pratt has of course had a huge week with the monstrous success of Guardians of the Galaxy so he is forgiven for ditching tailored suits – I think I like this rugged style better on him anyway – for a more relaxed look at the LA premiere of Aubrey Plaza’s Life After Beth. Plaza has been making some interesting red carpet choices recently and this floral lace Valentino frock is another one I love as both Plaza and her character April Ludgate continue to reign supreme here at TV Ate My Wardrobe.

Kate MaraThe color and cut of Kate Mara’s dress is pretty much my ideal (yellow is an ultimate clothing weakness). Paired with shades, a Coach bag, white Jil Sander buckled loafers and an iced drink makes effortless summer in the city styling.

taylor swiftTaylor Swift has turned leaving the gym into something of a catwalk and she delivered when visiting The Tonight Show earlier this week in a Bec & Bridge dress that is giving me all the long legged envy. Also the ability to walk in super stacked Prada sandals without stumbling/falling into an embarrassing heap. Still not sure about the shaggy, voluminous hair as it’s looking a touch bad ’80s, however the dash of pink lip color avoids being too matchy matchy with the similar shade on the dress. Jimmy continues the trend for striking purple ties this week.

It was announced earlier this week on Buzzfeed that the Veronica Mars team are coming back with a web series and creator Rob Thomas explains it “will have more in common with Party Down tonally, but it will be about Ryan Hansen, or at least a version of Ryan Hansen, deciding to capitalize on the current Veronica Mars heat to get his own series on the air.” This is terrific news as I need to find something to fill the Party Down hole in my life; Ryan Hansen shared a sneak look at what we can maybe expect from this show on his Instagram and it is glorious.

Kerry Washigton and Kristen BellOh hey, Veronica Mars! Kristen Bell with a lovely bouquet of flowers and a rather fetching companion at the HFPA Grants Banquet in LA. Kerry Washington’s strapless Mary Katrantzou floral number is sweet without entering saccharine territory; pairing it with pumps that have colorful edge makes me so happy. No beige shoes here.

“Let it Go” Performed with Classroom Instruments on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

4 Mar

If it isn’t already stuck in your head for eternity then give this version of “Let it Go” a whirl, as Frozen star Idina Menzel (insert John Travolta pronunciation joke here) appeared on The Tonight Show to perform the Oscar winning track in a segment that first appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. I think I like this better than the Oscar performance.

Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing and a $100 Bet on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show Debut

18 Feb

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon kicked off with a whole slew of famous faces including the already publicized Will Smith and some surprises. Following on from “Evolution of Mom Dancing” which Jimmy performed last year with Michelle Obama (who will be a guest on Thursday), Will Smith pulled out the big moves for “Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing.” Dressed in the appropriate Fresh Prince approved dungarees (one strap undone of course), the moves include the “Running Man” and the “Carlton.”

The star-studded cameos were boosted in a fun way as Robert De Niro (who was the first guest on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon), Tina Fey and Seth Rogen (to name just a few) came out one by one to pay Jimmy $100 as part of a bet. Some produced the money from ‘safe places’ with Sarah Jessica Parker getting it out of her shoe and Mariah Carey pulling it out of her cleavage. Backstage would have been interesting and earlier in the day Lindsay Lohan Instagrammed a shot which hinted at some sort of involvement with the Fallon’s debut. If I hadn’t seen this I might not have recognized her. Stephen Colbert ends the segment adapting one the best TV welcomes, but I will leave that as a surprise and I’m sure there will be more treats this week on The Tonight Show.
