After Comic-Con it has been a pretty quiet on the red carpet front so it is a convention of a political kind that dominates “Out of the Box” this week and we’ll be taking a look at the celebrities who spoke at the DNC in Philadelphia.
Angela Bassett working it on Day 3 wearing a sophisticated blue Karen Millen that wouldn’t look out of place on The Good Wife or Scandal; setting the right glam to serious tone.
This is how you coordinate without looking matchy matchy and Lena Dunham’s Gabriela Hearst off the shoulder white frock is a style best and America Ferrara in a black and white Black Halo gown adds an extra punch with colorful pumps.
When asked to stretch things out before introducing Paul Simon (and after giving a great speech) Sarah Silverman worked the camera giving the actual Look of the Week while Al Franken went peak dad on the joke front while they waited for Simon. Silverman also kept things classic and serious with her choice of ensemble.
From the Day 2 walk through and I love everything about this shot of Elizabeth Banks and her fabulous paisley number.
And for the actual thing Elizabeth Banks took a slightly more fun dress approach than some of the other celebrity speakers in a very cute Elie Saab, which works with the celeb filled and Pitch Perfect inspired “Fight Song” video that Banks helped conceive and introduced at the DNC.
Switching out from the DNC to magazine covers and September issues are coming! UK Elle is taking this opportunity to give themselves a makeover with a re-design and September is the perfect time for this as it always strikes me as the month for new beginnings. All four covers go in close and look great, but it is Amandla Stenberg’s that really stood out and I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on a copy.
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
29 JulBehind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set
14 JanThis week’s Golden Globes coverage extends beyond the many red carpet posts with a whole lot of selfies from the ballroom and the after parties. Plus a whole slew of other events and reminders of when certain shows are back.
Kicking things off with all the pretty from Gina Rodriguez and Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac. Plus Gina Rodriguez gives an all important beard smell related tweet.
From the American Horror Story: Hotel table where it looks like shenanigans are being had.
Backstage selfies with varying opinions about the lighting.

A quick change from Taraji P. Henson makes a whole lot of sense because dancing with a train that long is just impractical. Serayah opts for one of the bold color looks that was on trend this weekend.

Serious smolder and pout face from The Flash’s Grant Gustin and Shantel VanSanten and also a really good opportunity to remind you The Flash is back next week.
A shuttle shortage caused major parking lot hanging out, but our new favorite on (and off) screen besties took the opportunity to snap a shot.

It helps to be in with both HBO and Netflix as Pedro Pascal’s invites show.
The Netflix love is strong at a pre-Globes party with OITNB’s Elizabeth Rodriguez, Pedro Pascal and Netflix newbie Gillian Jacobs.

A busy weekend full of events for many and Gillian Jacobs attended the Vivienne Westwood ‘Art of Elysium’ celebration on Saturday in this stunning floral number. Getting pet approval points too.
Carly Chaikin’s AFI luncheon dress is one of our ultimate faves from the sea of recent outfits we have discussed and we also highly approve of her selfie subject from this event.
A very good week for Taraji with awards and magazine covers, plus finally getting Jussie Smollet back at his own game.

Mindy Kaling has worn a lot of amazing things and her Instagram acts as an outfit archive, but I can definitely see why she is calling this one of her favorites. All the heart eye emojis.
More X-Files treats this time courtesy of Bryan Fuller and a whole lot of pillow biting. Future Hannibal storyline in the works?
And if you were wondering when How to Get Away with Murder is back here is a delightful cast selfie from Viola Davis with that information.
A very intriguing Jane the Virgin behind the scenes sneak peek.
Just wondering how many synthetic beauties there are among this collection of Keri Russell Americans costumes and my eyes are instantly drawn to the green (p)leather number.
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
9 OctFall TV premieres and the red carpets that accompany them continue this week with American Horror Story: Hotel and The Leftovers. Plus film festivals in New York and London and Paris Fashion Week are keeping the style levels high.
At the BFI Luminous Fundraising Gala this week Rose Leslie does floral print in exquisite fashion wearing Erdem. Plus those all important pockets that another Game of Thrones star is a big fan of.
An ideal gown for a fancy event in fall and Jenna Coleman’s pink and gold Lanvin is equal parts delicate and intricate.
Kiernan Shipka wears Valentino at the Paris Fashion Week Valentino show and the mixture of floral pleats and lace is delightful.
Angela Bassett is one of the reasons I will probably end up watching at least half of American Horror Story: Hotel this season and she stuns on the red carpet in a Theia vegan leather LBD and funky embellished sandals.
Getting futuristic vibes from Sarah Paulson’s super sleek black metallic Monique Lhuillier frock and it is another really good recent red carpet choice from Paulson.
A stunning all-Chanel ensemble for Carey Mulligan’s in a gold floral sweater and lacy culottes. Yep those are culottes and not a skirt as I first thought it was. Even with that knowledge and my slight distrust of this garment it doesn’t change my mind about this winning look for the Suffragette photocall at the London Film Festival.
Beige becomes interesting with Roksanda color blocking (even the shoes aren’t bothering me) and Great Gerwig’s red up do is the extra pow to this already powerful look at the Maggie’s Plan New York Film Festival premiere.
In this week’s Behind the Insta-Scenes I mentioned that Liv Tyler and Margaret Qualley could easily play mother and daughter; this shot of them at the premiere for The Leftovers means I can double down on this suggestion. Margaret Qualley is pulling perfect side eye posing while Tyler smiles wide giving me plenty of ideas for what direction this yet to be written drama can go in.
Diane Kruger’s Violet Grey profile is full of stunning shots of her on the Paramount lot playing the part of a classic movie star in the vein of Grace Kelly and it was hard to narrow it down to just one. In the end I opted for the photo of Kruger wearing a Michael Kors sweater and Olympia Le-Tan stripe shorts which highlights her casual cool and beauty; this could easily be part of a Chanel campaign. The accompanying Q&A shows off Kruger’s wit and honesty – how often do actresses talk about having a hangover – and she is also someone who can get away with referring to her boyfriend as her “lover.”

15 JulAn all Comic-Con special of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” with plenty of TV shows represented at the annual event held in San Diego. Get ready for plenty of cast love-ins, social media rivalries and more excellent outfits.
Hugh Dancy strikes a pose and borrows Bryan Fuller’s amazing and on point jacket.
And here is the Hannibal Pannibal trio sans flower crowns.

It was Agent Carter versus Agents of SHIELD via the Dubsmash app and while Hayley Atwell is the undisputed queen (and co-star James D’Arcy is also pretty, pretty good) the SHIELD crew had strength in numbers.
Mic drop moment indeed.
Pre full on Dubsmash battle Chloe Bennet posted a picture sandwiched between her co-star Elizabeth Henstridge (excellent cartoon eye blouse) and Hayley Atwell offering up a whole lot of confused faces.

Everything about this is exactly how I imagine it would be like to meet Bill Murray. And it looks perfect.
https://instagram.com/p/4-uUgOnqpL/?taken-by=maisie_williams
Maisie Williams looks far more in her comfort zone here dancing up a storm with onscreen sister Sophie Turner in a stripy tee which I’m coveting – Maisie killed it with her outfits over Comic-Con – and all I want is for the pair to be reunited onscreen so they can burn Westeros to the ground (well at least burn Ramsay to the ground).
The pair is very happy to see each other and they even have their very own word blend name # (and the EW Instagram has a whole host of excellent behind the scenes shots from Comic-Con).
Sophie Turner also had the pleasure of hanging out with Oscar Isaac while promoting X-Men: Apocalypse and this has also been a good week for fans of Isaac as the first trailer for the HBO miniseries Show Me a Hero was released.
https://instagram.com/p/5C59cDHqvP/?taken-by=maisie_williams
A full on worlds collide selfie covering Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Doctor Who (also Skins).
Sarah Paulson is all of us right now.
I was skeptical about Fear the Walking Dead (that name) but after watching the first full trailer I am so in and not just for Kim Dickens reasons. Dickens looks stunning here alongside co-stars Elizabeth Rodriguez (OITNB) and Alycia Debnam Carey (The 100).
This cast! Without fail I do that thing where I wonder where everyone else is only to remember that Tatiana Maslany is everyone else. Plus a better look at the Tatiana’s amazing outfit and the one I crowned best of Comic-Con.
Superheroes from The CW bus.

The Flash has such a likable cast that I can’t help but smile at a photo like this (and also covet Danielle Panabaker’s polka dot frock).
Comic-Con Fashion Round-Up Part 1: The Entertainment Weekly Party
13 JulGoing away the weekend Comic-Con is on means I have a lot of catching up to do this morning as this annual event continues to attract stars from a whole host of TV shows and movies, which means plenty of outfits to scroll through.
Let’s ease into the week with the Entertainment Weekly shindig and as tends to be the way at Comic-Con there are different degrees of dressed up; this variety of styling makes this a fun rundown as there’s everything from 50s style prom to funky summer dresses.
The texture of Maisie Williams’ dress suggests something from the ocean which ties in nicely with her oyster girl cover story from Game of Thrones as well as her recent conservation work.
Ashley Madekwe could travel back to the Studio 54 heyday and blend right in wearing this amazing Saint Laurent gold dress.
As you can see from this party gold is on trend at the moment with Katie Cassidy working a glitzy floral pattern mini.
Going for a slightly dressier look is Lily James in shimmery Altuzarra and she continues her fashion hot streak after a very strong Cinderella promo tour.
The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green is a bold pattern queen in this kaleidoscope print frock.
Now this is a group I would want to hang out with at this party and Sarah Paulson’s Suno dress is rather understated for her and looks great. Angela Bassett continues to look the best in anything and Matt Bomer’s suit is far more interesting than all of his very safe Magic Mike XXL promo tour attire. Not quite sure how I feel about the super white sneakers as they instantly distract from everything else. But it also a relaxed affair so they also kinda make sense.
A very cute purple frock from The Flash’s Danielle Panabaker and I love her messy fishtail braid to boot.
Fun summer florals from Candice Accola with her hot pink lipstick serving up an excellent extra pop of color.
Camren Bicondova from Gotham is wearing the skirt version of the Alice + Olivia dress that Aya Cash wore a couple of months ago and it looks just as great here especially when paired with a plain black tee.
Carice van Houten’s skirt looks like really fancy silk wrapping paper, but the simple blue blouse balances this look out and once again she is wearing killer lipstick.
This is very much 50s fancy from Jennifer Morrison and while it is maybe a tad dressy for this event it is still rather fun. And maybe she is cosplaying Betty Draper or Libby Masters.
Best of the NAACP Image Awards 2015 Red Carpet
8 FebA bumper awards show weekend and we’re going to kick off our red carpet coverage with Friday’s NAACP Image Awards which saw Black-ish sweep the TV comedy categories and it was a good night for Shondaland with wins for both How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal. One of the big Golden Globes trends continues with plenty of red gowns on display and below are TV Ate My Wardrobe’s best looks of the night.
Starting with the ladies in red and Kerry Washington’s Zuhair Murad crimson frock is giving off summer cocktail vibes; this is relaxed fancy.
Picking up Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in No Good Deed is Taraji P Henson wearing Edition by Georges Chakra. This is a smoking scarlet gown and the streak of sequins perfectly shows off her figure.
Another red to add to the collection and New Girl’s Hannah Simone does the whole off the shoulder/mermaid style in Lorena Sarbu with ruffled aplomb.
My favorite look from the NAACP Image Awards comes courtesy of Supporting Actress in a Comedy winner Yara Shahidi; it is the kind of outfit only a teen can get away with at an event like this. Shahidi is having fun with her style by playing with the current menswear trend with the bow tie and blazer pairing it with a Black Fleece dress.
Pale yellow Burberry for Gugu Mbatha-Raw works like a charm and the floral embossed detail elevates this pastel creation; it is striking without extra accessories.
Angela Bassett is forever stunning in black and gold art deco print from Xcite Xtreme and this is how you work Wonder Woman-esque bracelets. Digging the sleek bang-less Cleopatra bob.
The cast of Selma celebrating their multiple wins and style highlights aplenty including David Oyelowo’s blue three piece suit, Tessa Thompson’s Kenzo pastel pink plunge, off the shoulder Solace London for Carmen Ejogo and an amazing custom Ashi Studio for director Ava DuVernay which makes me reconsider my usual mullet dress feelings.
Best of the 2014 Emmy Red Carpet: Black and White Gowns
26 AugWelcome to the 2014 Emmy red carpet ‘Best of’ coverage and in a year when bold color was on trend, black and white gowns still made their mark.
Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier is the TV Ate My Wardrobe look of the night and this gown is stunning. When Caplan arrived the brief shots on E! were enough to know she was shutting the red carpet down. Then this photo of the back began to circulate on Twitter and it became clear this gown is the stuff that dreams are made of; it didn’t disappoint from any other angle either.
In a custom Marc Bouwer Laverne Cox is the height of elegance and she has a train, which I adore. Perfection on this night from the Orange is the New Black star.
Lena Headey always comes across super cool and on Emmy night it is no different with Headey in a black Rubin Singer asymmetric ensemble. It’s always a jolt seeing the Game of Thrones cast with their regular hair – Kit Harington changed his up with a man bun – and Headey’s short do is as far removed from Cersei as you can get and I love it.
Another white gown winner (although sadly none of the ladies featured here took home their respective prizes) from Anna Chlumsky in Zac Posen. The gold clutch is the ideal glitzy addition to this outfit.
Going for a slightly different length is Jessica Paré in an exquisitely beaded Lanvin dress. Tulip skirts are hard to pull off as they’re an awkward silhouette; Paré manages to do this with aplomb.
Angela Bassett demonstrating once again that she must have a painting in the attic in a beautiful wrap gown with just the right amount of gold accessories; the belt and cuff detailing ties the whole look together.
While not as fun as Carrie Brownstein’s Emmy dress from last weekend, I salute this Halston Heritage dress that’s giving off fancy sci-fi uniform vibes.
Combining two of the night’s trends as dramatic leg slits were also prominent is Michelle Monaghan in white Giambattista Valli Couture. Also stunning.
Best of the Entertainment Weekly Comic-Con Celebration Red Carpet
28 JulComic-Con might be over and yet the style posts continue (and probably will for much of this week) with the best looks from the Entertainment Weekly party on Saturday.
Rose Leslie does simple chic attire with a hint of sparkle and after her other black sartorial choice I think we might have found a new TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite.
That noise you just heard was probably my heart going aflutter at the sight of Tom Mison wearing glasses and his beardy goodness. John Noble is looking rather dashing too in as part of this slightly different from Fringe father/son combo.
More Sleepy Hollow goodness and posing like prom; not too keen on the sheer section of Nicole Beharie’s skirt, but this is a fun summer outfit. Totally digging Orlando Jones’ plum pants and glasses look.
Deborah Ann Woll has lightened her locks (maybe for Daredevil or just to mark the end of True Blood) and she looks just as striking as ever in a strapless red frock with a bold lip color to complement the new ‘do.
Ashley Madekwe brings the metallic goodness to this party in a Christian Dior strapless frock and the patch detail gives the impression of a fun uniform like embellishment.
Now this is a summer frock and Angela Bassett stands out in a Theia hot pink dress with a rainbow bodice.
Robots! Felicia Day’s top is delightfully on the nose for this weekend. Fantastic nail color too.
Out of the Box: Look of the Week
11 OctPublic appearances, magazine shoots and red carpet looks dominate “Out of the Box” this week. Remember to check out our Scandal costuming recap for all things Olivia Pope and our Masters of Sex color and costuming post here.
While I’m on the subject of Masters of Sex here is Lizzy Caplan in what looks like a jumpsuit but is actually two separates (though a long sleeve jumpsuit is available) by Corey Lynn Calter. Having just got used to seeing Caplan in all ’50s wear I’m glad to see this shoot with The Independent doesn’t try to mimic that style and instead goes for a more 1970s look.
The bag over the head option is probably only useful when it is raining (and really how much does that really do to keep you dry?) but this Clémence Poésy outfit in Stylist magazine is not only super adorable but also affordable. The coat is French Connection and the skirt is from Oasis showing just how winter florals are done and I basically want this whole ensemble – there are chaffinches on the blouse! Clémence Poésy’s next role is in another adaptation of Broen this time the border between France and the United Kingdom; instead of The Bridge it will be called The Tunnel and Poésy is playing Elise, the role Sofia Helin and Diane Kruger have also played. The three actresses all share a similar look and it’s unlikely, but I’d love to see a crossover involving the three different versions of this show.
I watched American Horror Story for the first time this week and while I’m still entirely sure what to make of the show I do know that I am excited to have Angela Bassett back on TV again and she looks incredible at the premiere of American Horror Story: Coven. This leather and lace Robert Rodriguez dress is pretty much perfect and completely in tone with the show that Bassett is promoting.
I’ve got so used to seeing Michael Shannon as the buttoned up (former) Agent Van Alden on Boardwalk Empire and so this combination of polka dot socks and pink t-shirt at The New Yorker “In Conversation” event is so utterly delightful. Rather than his impressive acting career this evening looked at music and Shannon performed with his band Corporal. Sadly there doesn’t appear to be a video of this performance on the New Yorker’s site and I can’t imagine his character on Boardwalk Empire getting up with a guitar anytime soon, unless a super coked up Al Capone wants him to of course.
There is something so wonderfully ’80s about this Band of Outsiders dress; it might be the puffed pointy shoulders or the black and white zigzag stripes. Whatever it is, Lucy Liu looks incredible. This outfit is for an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman but in my mind she is really working on a top secret take down mission in 1987. Now all I need is for someone to wear this outfit from Wonder Woman and I’ll be happy.
