Out of the Box: Look of the Week

29 Sep

For all the ’70s inspired looks—of which there are still are many—the decade that follows is inching its way back in the style stakes. I am less thrilled about this turn of events because the ’80s feels a little overplayed, but that doesn’t mean I am completely immune.

September is almost at an end, but there is still A LOT going on including galas, premieres and other various events. This week there is also dominated by pattern, which I am so here for. Speaking of which, here is my interview with costume designer Lorraine Calvert talking all things 1970s menswear and Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House. Garish patterns are my fave.  Lupita Nyong’o gives great red carpet no matter the style code and at the 2017 Global Citizen Festival in Central Park she looks cool af in Gucci pink metallic bomber jacket, loafers and super round sunglasses. Also working the tee of the event to great effect. Vampire’s Wife is a brand that continues to deliver on the romantic infused ruffled delights and now January Jones is getting in on the action. This mini metallic floral number is one of the reasons I’m thinking a ’80s revival isn’t so bad. Also, Last Man on Earth is back on Sunday (October 1) and I cannot wait. Airbnb is getting into the tour business and for the ultimate SATC experience they’ve enlisted Carrie Bradshaw herself, for this one-off event. It is of course sold out (there were only four spaces) and at the launch, SJP gives the best in fall fashion in a floral frock and contrasting belt. Sparkly pumps are always a winner too.

And while I am on the topic of perfect floral frocks for fall; here is Yvette Nicole Brown looking fabulous at a screening of The Mayor, in a dress from Anthropologie that is the most autumn of color palettes. Anna Chlumsky is doing some wonderful things on a wonderful season of Halt and Catch Fire and at the Metropolitan Opera Opening Night she looks incredible in Christian Siriano. The peplum structure and window pane detail makes this a standout frock and the orange tone lipstick and nails are the perfect boost of color. From the opera to the ballet and Keri Russell in a look that is very Americans era appropriate and while Philip and Elizabeth don’t get to go undercover at fancy events, if they did then it would look a bit like this. But with more wigs. This is another frilled number from Johanna Ortiz and I was surprised that she didn’t wear this designer to the Emmys.More from the ballet and Michelle Monaghan ups the drama levels in a colorful and floaty Prabal Gurung dress.

Maggie Gyllenhall is up there with Tracee Ellis Ross and Elisabeth Moss for the best Instagram BTS shots of outfits she has been wearing and this red dress by Ryan Roche is a stunner. Also, I finally started watching The Deuce and Maggie does not disappoint. Also here is an interesting piece about why this show is getting it right. The thread that has given me the most joy on Twitter over the last few months is Fiona’s deep dive into the style similarities between Cate Blanchett and Harry Styles. It is truly the gift that keeps on giving and we haven’t even had the Thor promo tour yet.

Harry has of course been wearing some A+ suits this year and there isn’t a pattern he isn’t afraid to wear. Case in point; this very jester like Gucci (of course) ensemble at the iHeartRadio Music Festival is perfect for a performance and nod to the New Romantics.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

15 Sep

After I talked up last week’s bumper “Out of the Box” this one is slightly longer and all the events, they keep on coming; TIFF, NYFW and the Creative Arts Emmys. We have a fun mix of fancy red carpet, daytime attire and even an airport look.

Plus, The X-Files celebrated its 24th anniversary and I wrote about Dana Scully’s influence on TV work wardrobes for The ObserverYou should know by now how I feel about Tatiana Maslany’s style—strongly positive—and she gives great casual and fancy. At the Stronger TIFF premiere, this J. Mendel is of course the latter and the color/ruffles are fantastic. As is Maslany’s dark lipstick choice.

And as I mentioned on Twitter the other day, I am so excited to see her post-Orphan Black career and that her extraordinary talent will reach a wider audience. Mohair sweaters are a quiet obsession of mine and everything about Elisabeth Moss in Rochas, at a screening for The Square is ’50s inspired perfection.

Another fabulous pick from super stylist Karla Welch and I cannot wait to see what Moss will be wearing at the Emmys on Sunday.

See also this incredible tailored look.

Even if Brie Larson’s directorial debut wasn’t called Unicorn Store, I would applaud her airport ensemble—fluffy whimsical sandals aside—and both Larson and fiancé Alex Greenwald look cool af.

The Vampire’s Wife is a brand that has been doing very good things of late and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s silver frock continues this trend. Maggie has been crushing it during this press tour for The Deuce.

Also, Maggie addressed one of the important issues of our time (and you get to see how great the sleeves are in this Watch What Happens Live clip). At the New York mother! premiere before this happened with a T-shirt swap, there was a whole lot of couples coordinating between Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. Also on the highly anticipated Emmy red carpet list.
The prelude to the main event and the Creative Arts Emmys—for costume wins head here—delivered with Niecy Nash looking divine in a figure hugging and puffed sleeve scarlet dream. Also in red and giving me so much life is Angela Bassett in Romona Keveza. I’m sad she didn’t win her guest actress in a comedy category for the amazing Thanksgiving episode of Master of None.Serving up super sexy drama in gold and black Mikael D is Laverne Cox. Currently fantasy casting a movie with Cox and Margot Robbie based on their red carpet looks.I was already enamored by Emily V. Gordon’s style and then I watched The Big Sick and fell further in love—the red brain sweater was based on something Emily wore. This is another great red carpet look in floral Self-Portrait and Kumail Namjiani scrubs up well in a midnight blue tux.Moving on to NYFW and it has been a very busy week/month/year for Elisabeth Moss. And another 50s-adjacent look at Kate Spade New York. A brand I very much enjoy (and can almost afford).Florals continue to dominate and at the Refinery29 29Rooms: Turn It Into Art event, Issa Rae and Gabby Sidibe looks like they are having a blast.

Insecure wrapped up its second season with a very strong finale and it has been another season full of great costuming.Obligatory “I still miss The Carrie Diaries” mention because here is Austin Butler—wearing a Radiohead tee—at Jeremy Scott with girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens. Two mohair sweaters in one week! Skai Jackson pairs hers with a burgundy pleated skirt and this outfit at Libertine is pretty much an ideal fall ensemble. Jackson is only 15 and definitely way cooler than me.The Outlander premiere was an emotional watch for me, but I am very glad to have it back and switching out ’50s Boston maternity style for a very cool and colorful look at Delpozo is Caitriona Balfe. Balfe has been having a very good NYFW.Chunky ankle/calf boots are here to stay it would seem and I am more than fine with this dip back to the ’90s trend as previously seen from Louis Vuitton last year. Michelle Monaghan is at Oscar de la Renta and I love the edged up glam of this look.Obligatory “I still miss Selfie” mention and Karen Gillan’s super cute romper at Self-Portrait looks like something Eliza would wear. Plus, more ankle boots to covet. The Christian Siriano front row looked the most fun and I want to have a boozy lunch with all four of these women. And if Leslie Jones could lend me her cape then that would be a bonus.

I’m looking forward to seeing who will be wearing Siriano on Sunday. I’m all about the Emmys right now.In more great fabulous front row news; Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts in coordinating and yet contrasting florals at Michael Kors. Naomi Watts continues to be an Instagram fave.

It is no secret that I am a long time Michelle and Busy fan and I was very excited when Michelle popped up on Busy’s Insta last week. Even more so when they did a whole Dawson’s Creek thing a couple of days after. Which also included this amazing photo.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

5 May

Somehow it is May already and this month is a particularly busy one for TV and fashion. The first Monday in May is Met Gala day; it delivered in some respects and featured some of our TV faves. This month is also traditionally the time for season finales and upfronts (even if FX had theirs in April), but as the TV schedule has evolved there is now big new stuff coming every month. Or every week as it feels right now.

This week’s “Out of the Box” is another case of giving great daytime event style with all the pattern and color. The Hulu upfront dominates our sartorial picks and there’s also some Met Gala post-party runoff. Elisabeth Moss has been crushing it with her corridor outfit posing of late on Instagram and this is another case of the amazing eye of super stylist Karla Welch. Here she’s working the Hulu brunch in color block Ted Baker and you know that collar is right up my street.

Also if you haven’t done this already then check out Jada Yuan’s fabulous interview with Moss for NY Mag including some A+ jewelry buying advice from January Jones. The thing with events like this is they often give good wedding guest cocktail dress inspiration (as long as it isn’t too fancy) and this is ideal for this time of year. Case in point is Samira Wiley wearing a floral Carmen Marc Valvo frock and I’m glad she went with a colorful shoe too.Rounding out the Handmaid’s Tale cast is Alexis Bledel in pattern clashing Saloni Resort mixing flowers with polka dots. I love everything about this look right down to her purple strappy sandals and the short tuxedo style jacket. The Hulu bash had full foliage to pose in front of and this works wonders with all the summery fashion on display including Mindy Kaling in this Sachin & Babi gown. Now just get me a cocktail to enjoy.I love the drama of Mary Katrantzou dress and Michelle Monaghan – another Karla Welch client – is serving up plenty of that here. Casual is one of several shows returning this month (May 23) and Tara Lynne Barr’s colorful shorts go a long way in making me ignore how bland those sandals are. Great pedicure though. Kerry Washington was one of our Met Gala highlights (and someone who paid attention to the theme) and here she is the day after at the Bronx Children’s Museum Gala wearing striped Carolina Herrera.

This is giving me circus tent feelings and I mean that in the best possible way. All you need is Keri Russell in her Rag & Bone tails and we’ve got a theme.Speaking of which and as I have a fondness for a getting ready behind the scenes photo diary here is one from Keri Russell’s makeup artist Tina Turnbow for Coveteur

Giving a closeup of Russell’s incredible eyeliner and revealing that Matthew Rhys almost ended up with something similar. Also this is a very adorable shot. Now for a couple of outfit changes for the post-Met parties including Zendaya switching out one D&G incredible print for another. So much ladysuit love with this double-breasted sleeveless take.

And I just realized we’ll be getting a whole lot more Zendaya red carpet action soon with the Spider-Man promo tour.Bookending “Out of the Box” this week with more Karla Welch delights and Ruth Negga changed from ethereal Valentino into edgy leather Valentino. Negga is serving up great posing face whereas Dominic Cooper is giving slightly tipsy vibes. Having seen the amazing Mamma Mia! wrap party pictures this makes sense.

Best of the 2017 Winter TCA Panel and Party Style (So Far)

12 Jan

Award season and the Golden Globes are not the only place for super stylish outfits this month/week as the 2017 winter TCA press tour is fully underway. The really great thing about this occurring during award season is getting to see outfits that are more like the things I would actually wear. Don’t get me wrong; I love the grand and opulent gowns that we get to see on the red carpet at this time of year, but it is also fun to mix things up. See also why I cannot wait for all the knitwear and coats from Sundance.

There are patterns aplenty and this is one trend that was lacking at the Golden Globes, but because of the whole panel element there isn’t always standing shots so some outfits don’t get their full moment to shine.kerry-washington-and-bellamy-youngThe whole TGIT block got pushed back a week, but we have some sartorial delights from the cast of Scandal with Kerry Washington looking stunning in a floral Prabal Gurung frock and super cute purple ribbon Gianvito Rossi shoes.

Bellamy Young is also crushing it in patterns with leopard print really making a comeback (see also Keri Russell at the Globes) and pairing this bold skirt with a red short sleeve sweater adds a fiery elegance to the whole look.cush-jumboAfter The Good Wife ended in disappointment I was pretty sure I didn’t need any more from this world, but it turns out it was maybe just Alicia Florrick’s story that I was done with as with every promo and interview about this spinoff my excitement levels grow.

Plus more Diane (and a Diane who is allowed to swear) is everything I need right now. Same goes for Cush Jumbo and it will be good to see the super stylish Lucca Quinn step out from her ‘get-a-grip’ friend role.

Also this Carolina Herrera pink dress is super cute and Jumbo looks amazing both on the show in costume Daniel Lawson’s choices and IRL.the-good-fightAnd the full Good Fight cast with the creators. I am so ready. condola-rashadSometimes an abstract print is what you need as Condola Rashad from Billions is demonstrating; it is like palm trees meets Pollack. michelle-monaghanAt The Path session Michelle Monaghan is several levels of mesmerizing in this Mary Katrantzou frock delivering on both pattern and sparkle.

madchen-amickDramatic shoulders at the Twin Peaks revival panel and Mädchen Amick delivers in La Petite Robe by Chiara Boni with bonus red lip. Confession time – I have still not watched Twin Peaks even though I got the DVD two Christmases ago and I am hanging my head in so much shame. This will be rectified by Sunday, May 21 when it returns to TV. izombieApril is going to be a great TV month with the last season of The Leftovers and the return of iZombie on April 4. And this is one good looking and super stylish cast with A+ suit choices and a fabulous Yigal Azrouel frock for Rose McIver. I would also love to know what point she is making here.samira-wiley-and-elisabeth-mossAnother confession – I have not read The Handmaid’s Tale, but I did buy it this week and it is next on my To Read pile after I am done with the short story detective anthology I’m reading right now. It is a book I am of course aware of and that it is very timely despite coming out over thirty years ago.

The cast is also incredible and this shot of Samira Wiley and Elisabeth Moss is delightful.elisabeth-mossSwitching from pants to a dress and on the same Hulu day Elisabeth Moss gives me collar and color envy in this fabulous Ulyana Sergeenko frock. alexis-bledelIt was also announced on Saturday that Alexis Bledel is in The Handmaid’s Tale and hopefully she will be better received in this than Rory Gilmore’s writing career in the Gilmore Girl’s revival.

Great dress and I’m so happy Bledel’s shoe/manicure choice is summer when her dress is winter. Got to mix those seasons.yvonne-strahovskiSometimes a black jumpsuit does the trick as Yvonne Strahovski demonstrates.tara-lynne-barrTara Lynne Barr is here to remind me that I still need to finish watching the last season of Casual and also that red boots are fabulous. Another good example of an outfit I would actually wear.ari-graynorAs with Yvonne Strahovski’s black jumpsuit, Ari Graynor goes classic in a black sweater and pencil skirt (further research on Twitter revealed this wasn’t a sweater dress like I hoped it might be) as she talks “I’m Dying Up Here.”conor-leslieConor Leslie of new Fox show Shots Fired delivers on winter botanicals and this dress skirts the right side of sheer (yeah there is one), but really it is her lipstick that is giving me so much life right now. leighton-meester-tcaMuch to my joy Leighton Meester is returning to TV in March for Fox’s time travel comedy Making History and in jumpsuit news I am enjoying the turtleneck twist combined with the gold studs; this feels very business but you can also go to the club after.

Best of the Hollywood Reporter “Women in Entertainment” Celebration

8 Dec

The Hollywood Reporter celebrated their annual “Women in Entertainment” issue with a breakfast event and this means a whole range of daytime styles from ladysuits to patterned dress delights. This year Tina Fey, Ryan Murphy and Megyn Kelly were all honored with Jon Hamm delivering on the funny in his opening speech for Fey.

You can watch the entire thing and it is well worth it.

Plus here are the best looks from the event and there is so much pattern pretty.

simone-bilesKicking off with a ladysuit in a fantastic color and multi-Olympic gold winning medalist Simone Biles crushes it in Marienbad.the-farmigasMore ladysuit goodness from Vera Farmiga and polka dot pussy bow is probably my favorite kind of pussy bow blouse. Joined by younger sister Tassia (for Ryan Murphy celebrating reasons) and she also looks fantastic in one of the many patterned numbers I am now coveting hard.michelle-monaghanGetting all the amazing collar points is Michelle Monaghan in this superb Michael Kors Spring 17 ensemble. Daytime event perfection.eva-longoriaMore florals and another winner with Eva Longoria wearing a dress from her own Limited collection; it is totally affordable and very cute. Plus bonus pockets!niecy-nashFrom roses to leopard print and Niecy Nash is full super sexy whoa in this all powerful Meow and Barks Boutique dress.maria-menounosDipping into that seventies inspiration is Maria Menounos in a fabulous Valentino mini frock. issa-raeWhile I’m not crazy for shoulder cutouts, I do love the print and color of this Ellery dress on Issa Rae.emma-stoneAnd while I’m going crazy for yellow dresses (as I tend to) Emma Stone is smart to remind people of the great La La Land poster during award season and she does so in Giambattista Valli style.constance-zimmerConstance Zimmer mixes casual with glam in a Pat Benatar tee from Janey Lopaty Vintage and super sparkly Milly skirt.aja-naomi-kingIt is not all print and ladysuits; Aja Naomi King looks bold in blue and this Alice + Olivia dress is a great breakfast choice. I’d like to see some hot pink pumps, but I can deal with this neutral tone for an event this early in the day.genevieve-angelsonNow it might look like Genevieve Angelson put on this Chloe ensemble back to front, but I love it so much and she is definitely pulling it off. Plus I really hope another network/streaming platform saves Good Girls Revolt because the story on that show is far from over.tina-feyTo the woman of the hour and really if you haven’t watched the video at the start of this piece then I will urge you to scroll up and do so. Also she looks great in patterned Dolce & Gabbana with a very day appropriate blazer thrown over for good measure.tina-and-jonAnd I’ve got to end on this one for reasons. Oh to have Jon Hamm look at you like that.

Screen Queens of The Edit: Tracee Ellis Ross, Cynthia Nixon, Kristen Bell and Michelle Monaghan Talk TV

29 Nov

TV issues of magazines are up there with roundtable discussions in how much I enjoy them (which is to say a lot) and Net-A-Porter’s weekly online magazine The Edit has produced a ‘Screen Queens’ issue featuring Tracee Ellis Ross, Cynthia Nixon, Kristen Bell and Michelle Monaghan to talk all things TV and wear some of the latest fashions.

The thing with The Edit is that it is linked directly to the Net-A-Porter site so you can shop the issue with ease (if your bank balance permits and you are in the mood for a splurge) and there are a whole lot of ladysuit and sequin delights in this editorial. net-a-porterAs well as the Q&A’s with each actress there are also videos on the Net-A-Porter YouTube channel (and below) amounting to about an episode of a network drama and this is exactly the kind of thing I am after as they discuss the topics that typically come up on these things; diversity, ageism, sexism and equality.

This is also a good cross section of TV actresses covering a variety of shows – that they are currently on/have previously starred in – to the platforms they air on with network, cable and streaming all represented.

We are very much in the throes of movie award season, but this doesn’t mean there isn’t space to talk all things TV and you can watch the discussion below.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

22 Sep

Taking a break from Emmy coverage (including the special Emmys Inst-Scenes post) with a return to our normal schedule of TV Instagram photos.

Another very cute Mindy Project outfit and eating on the go from Mindy Kaling. I would definitely have a spilling situation occurring in this scenario.

THIS PHOTO. I would watch this drama unfold in a heartbeat.

https://instagram.com/p/75DvSxuID6/?taken-by=glassofwhiskey

Definitely high on my most anticipated TV show list – it has undergone a name change from The Way to The Path – and slightly softening the end of Hannibal blow.

There’s a reason Joshua Jackson has remained a favorite since 1998. Also, yay Diane!

Aaaaaand I’ve definitely done this.

I really need Playing House to be renewed already. This dress, that episode and everything about this show and these ladies is fantastic.

A reminder that Jane the Virgin is back in a few weeks and it has been far too long.

Grant Gustin has got the Flash apparel situation locked down and it does indeed look rather cold.

There’s a Mad Men tree and I definitely want to find it. Elisabeth Moss has goggles chic down.

So this is tangentially Emmy related as photographer Lisa Guerriero shared this photo of Jon Hamm goofing around onset to celebrate his win. It is both terrifying and amazing.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 Oct

Pretty, patterned and textured (alliteration be damned) frocks ahoy from a variety of premieres, award shows and red carpet events on this edition of “Out of the Box.”

Aubrey PlazaIt’s not just because of the all important pocket factor that makes me head over heels for Aubrey Plaza in Mary Katrantzou; the bold and colorful print is pure Mary Katrantzou magic and Plaza is a sartorial delight. There’s no need for accessories with a dress like this and I’m so happy to see gold sandals rather than nude pumps as the footwear choice.

Kaitlyn DeverKaitlyn Dever was only in one episode of Party Down as Karen’s wannabe actress daughter Escapade, but because she was mentioned so frequently I still automatically think of the company picnic episode whenever I see her. A slight tangent to start with and here is Dever at the New York premiere of Laggies (I can’t wait to see this movie) in a stunning black lace Oscar de la Renta frock and platform Brian Atwood peep-toes. This look is elegant, age appropriate and uses the sheer trend in way that doesn’t have me yelling “Whyyyyyyyyy?” at my screen for once.

Michelle MonaghanDolce & Gabbana have embraced fairy tale fashion in their fall 2014 collection and Michelle Monaghan is working the key motif number like a charm at the 20th Annual Fulfillment Fund Stars Benefit Gala. The floral print contrasts with the black jacquard dress and is a prime example of how to wear florals long after the summer is over.

Kristen SchaalThe runway was awash with gingham last month as Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta and Altuzarra were all working this trend; Kristen Schaal wore this super cute blue and white gingham dress to the Bob’s Burgers PaleyFest panel completing the look with a pair of white Oxfords. Flat shoe high five!

Laverne Cox and Taylor SchillingMTV and Logo are both premiering Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word documentary tonight and last night Cox was joined by her OITNB co-star Taylor Schilling to celebrate this television event. Cox spent the day wearing a variety of purple outfits for Spirit Day (and you can see them all on her Instagram) and she saved the best for last in this beautiful Monique Lhuillier lace gown. Schilling’s multicolored floral button down has a splash of purple and I wish we could see her shoes (or booties if I had to guess) a little better as it looks like the carpet has merged with her feet. There’s a clash in fancy levels between the two outfits, but as Cox is the one in the spotlight it makes sense that her attire is far dressier.

Kerry Washington AllureKerry Washington does the whole fresh faced look on the cover of Allure and it’s one of her best magazine covers to date (and over the past year there have been many). Wearing what looks like an Olivia Pope wine cardigan this is a far cry from her Scandal character with choppy, tousled and shorter locks plus a whole lot of cleav.

Best of the 2014 Emmy Red Carpet: Black and White Gowns

26 Aug

Welcome to the 2014 Emmy red carpet ‘Best of’ coverage and in a year when bold color was on trend, black and white gowns still made their mark.

Lizzy Caplan Emmys V2Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier is the TV Ate My Wardrobe look of the night and this gown is stunning. When Caplan arrived the brief shots on E! were enough to know she was shutting the red carpet down. Then this photo of the back began to circulate on Twitter and it became clear this gown is the stuff that dreams are made of; it didn’t disappoint from any other angle either.

Laverne Cox EmmysIn a custom Marc Bouwer Laverne Cox is the height of elegance and she has a train, which I adore. Perfection on this night from the Orange is the New Black star.

Lean HeadeyLena Headey always comes across super cool and on Emmy night it is no different with Headey in a black Rubin Singer asymmetric ensemble. It’s always a jolt seeing the Game of Thrones cast with their regular hair – Kit Harington changed his up with a man bun – and Headey’s short do is as far removed from Cersei as you can get and I love it.

Anna Chlumsky EmmyAnother white gown winner (although sadly none of the ladies featured here took home their respective prizes) from Anna Chlumsky in Zac Posen. The gold clutch is the ideal glitzy addition to this outfit.

Jessica PareGoing for a slightly different length is Jessica Paré in an exquisitely beaded Lanvin dress. Tulip skirts are hard to pull off as they’re an awkward silhouette; Paré manages to do this with aplomb.

Angela BassettAngela Bassett demonstrating once again that she must have a painting in the attic in a beautiful wrap gown with just the right amount of gold accessories; the belt and cuff detailing ties the whole look together.

Carrie BrownsteinWhile not as fun as Carrie Brownstein’s Emmy dress from last weekend, I salute this Halston Heritage dress that’s giving off fancy sci-fi uniform vibes.

Michelle Monaghan EmmysCombining two of the night’s trends as dramatic leg slits were also prominent is Michelle Monaghan in white Giambattista Valli Couture. Also stunning.

Best of the Variety and BAFTA Pre-Emmy Red Carpets

24 Aug

August has been a relatively quiet month with most of the red carpet action coming from film projects filmed while on hiatus. Get ready for an influx of dresses as the Emmys are on Monday and the parties have already begun. Below are the best looks from the BAFTA Los Angeles TV Tea 2014 and Variety and Women in Film Emmy Nomination Celebration. With several pulling double duty at both events a couple of faces pop up twice. On trend is a mixture of all-black ensembles and super colorful affairs (with some showcasing both thanks to the two events). There are a lot of bad shoe choices and somehow three jumpsuits make the list (insert Home Alone cat face here).

Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington has been hitting style highs recently and this is another to add to that list. Going short in Michael Kors and fresh faced before the fancy frock night is understandable. This is striking in its simplicity and there’s a slight hint of sparkle when the flash hits the embellishments.

Samira WileyAnother short take and the pre-Emmy parties are all about having fun before the big event and Orange is the New Black’s Samira Wiley is doing just this in a blurred effect number.

Julianna MarguliesJulianna Margulies is always one of my most anticipated on the red carpet come award season and while she is playing it pretty safe; it is also a classic J-Marg look. Digging the bold lipstick too.

Michelle Dockery VarietyMichelle Dockery’s peplum Elie Saab black jumpsuit is also in the simple chic category at the Variety party.

Michelle DockeryHowever, earlier in the day Dockery has done the color splurge in a Roland Mouret crop top and skirt. The Teen Choice Awards don’t have the monopoly on crop tops (there is another coming up) and even though the skirt looks like a fancy table cloth Dockery pulls this off. Despite the matchy matchy shoe/skirt of it all these Christian Louboutin pumps are a footwear highlight.

KS and ASIf Kiernan Shipka’s Instagram is anything to go by these teen stars are set to takeover the world while having brunch and here she is once again with Sleepy Hollow’s Amandla Stenberg. Both manage to look super cute and slightly edgy at the same time in their dark attire.

KsKiernan Shipka also attended the BAFTA Tea in a summery Giambattista Valli cocktail dress and she will be one to look out for tomorrow as she continues to hit all the right sartorial notes.

Joanne FroggattDownton Abbey’s Joanne Froggat does color blocking in Altuzarra mixing bold red and orange with grey. Black sandals are a popular choice on both red carpets (not in the bad shoe category) and it is still summer after all.

Ashley MadekweAt first I thought this was a dress, instead it is a Christian Dior jumpsuit with one leg much wider than the other and Ashley Madekwe pulls off Dior’s latest attempt to wrinkle our brains (remember JLaw’s half skirt/pants number?!). One reason this works is because it’s all one color and a striking shade of blue at that. Plus the pockets, always the pockets.

Anna ChlumskyKeeping in the jumpsuit/pocket territory and Anna Chlumsky’s Veronica Beard outfit reminds me of the Hannibal bathroom location from season one (they’re not even that similar, but that’s where my brain jumped to). This is not a bad thing as those tiles are gorgeous as is this pattern.

Lizzy Caplan BAFTAAnother BAFTA/Variety double! Lizzy Caplan is wearing a bold chartreuse Cushnie et Ochs frock and works this difficult shade by pairing it with scarlet pumps. Sheer tends to cause a wrinkled nose effect and part of me would love to see this as a strapless gown.

Lizzy Caplan VarietySwitching things up and the Wes Gordon houndstooth pencil skirt and long sleeve crop top makes me think of a Virginia Johnson outfit shifted from 1956 to 2014. Paired with burgundy Christian Louboutin ‘Bootypump’ ankle boots – which I am now coveting – makes this a sophisticated and fun take on office to party chic.

Allison TolmanEmmy weekend also reminds me which shows I need to catch up on and Fargo is top of this list. I’ve heard so much about Allison Tolman’s performance and she looks lovely on the BAFTA Tea red carpet in a lace blue frock. A more colorful shoe choice (basically anything but beige) would have been preferable.

Rachelle LefevreMore beige shoe sadness with Rachelle Lefevre, however her dress is enough to distract and looks like the clothing version of sediment layers. This also doesn’t sound that great I realize, but trust me it is. So much hair envy.

Michelle MonaghanColor blocking with a dotty twist and Michelle Monaghan’s red and orange J. Mendel frock is another striking take on this trend.
