Nominees Announced for the 18th Costume Designers Guild Awards

8 Jan

The nominations keep on coming and the Costume Designers Guild Awards are one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s key celebrations of the year because they focus on excellence in costume design covering television, film and short form. Instead of one costume design category where period tends to reign supreme these TV and film awards are split into three separate groupings giving contemporary, period and fantasy their chance to shine. The awards will take place Tuesday, February 23 in a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and if it is anything like last year then it will be a very glamorous affair.

We’re going to discuss who has been nominated and the names of those we would also have loved to see get recognized. Plus a fun treat at the end as I was lucky enough to get to see one nominee’s creations up close last year and now is the perfect time to share those photos.

Last year fantasy and period costuming were grouped together when it came to the TV nominees and mini-series/made for TV movie took up the third space. Splitting fantasy and period makes so much sense to me giving a broader scope especially when considering the volume and quality of period shows. Sleepy Hollow does have two nominations in fantasy because there have been two different costume designers (Kristin M. Burke and Mairi Chisholm) at the helm over this voting period and it is about time that this show got some recognition for the incredible collection of contemporary, period and monster attire. The other standout and the show to beat is Game of Thrones and as this is Michele Clapton’s final season this also gives her an added boost.

The period category is where a lot of the big hitters are including Janie Bryant and Tiffany White Stanton for Mad Men’s last hurrah (and another excuse to post a photo of my overall costuming highlight from 2015), Masters of Sex wobbled this year story wise, but the costuming didn’t dip in quality and The Knick is just as mesmerizing from a wardrobe point of view as it is from the way it is lit (and anyone who reads my Twitter feed knows how much I love the lighting). I still need to watch Outlander (I know) and while I couldn’t get on with Penny Dreadful it is easy to see why it has been nominated.

As far as shows I would love to see get recognized when it comes to period attire The Americans is top of that list as Jenny Gering managed once again to weave the spy wear with the at home styling so effortlessly and in a way which really informs the story without feeling like an anthology of everything 80s. Fargo is the other one I am disappointed to see not on the list as Carol Case produced some exceptional work. The same can be said about Giovanna Melton’s work on Agent Carter and this is one of the many examples of a show which could easily straddle two different categories as it can also be counted as a fantasy.

The biggest disappointment for me personally comes in the contemporary offerings and while they are all solid choices – American Horror Story: Hotel is another one which could be defined as more than one genre – I can’t help but feel Christopher Hargadon has been sorely overlooked for his work on Hannibal. Comedy has also been mostly ignored and there are plenty of sitcoms, half hours and those hard to define shows like Orange is the New Black missing out with only Transparent taking up that space. Jenn Rogien for Girls and OITNB, Broad City’s Staci Greenbaum, Wendy Benbrook for You’re the Worst and The Mindy Project’s pattern clashing king Salvador Perez are a few of the comedy options who I would have liked to see up for this award.

Moving on to the film options; Joy and The Danish Girl are two films I watched this week and while I didn’t love either one the costuming is a high point in both. I’m also really pleased to see The Martian up for an award as I’m still thinking about the various pieces of NASA apparel, plus the actual space suits and everything back on earth. It’s no surprise seeing either Carol or Brooklyn in the period category (both of which received a BAFTA nomination this morning) and I’ve been pretty obsessed with all things Carol since I saw it in November.

Fantasy is what really excites me film wise this year especially as most of these will sadly not cross over into Oscars territory; although much to my delight Mad Max is up for a BAFTA. Once again Kurt and Bart delivered big on The Hunger Games even if this one is less decadent and grimier than the other installments. When I saw Star Wars for the second time this week I was once again struck by costume details from Rey’s long gloves on top of gloves to Kylo Ren’s cape and there is so much going on that informs character. Ex-Machina is the little movie that could and yeah I think this is a good time to post this gif showcasing some of the simple, but super effective dancing attire.

 [Source]

Sandy Powell is a double nominee (both here and at the BAFTAs) for two Cate Blanchett movies (Carol and Cinderella) and while I haven’t watched Cinderella I was lucky enough to see the costumes up close and personal at an exhibition in London last March and you can see the photos from that in the gallery below.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

4 Nov

A bumper “Behind the Insta-Scenes” this week including Halloween both on and off set, cast hangouts, reminiscing and dancing. There is always time for dancing.

Everything about this photo brings me so much joy. I miss Parks and Rec.

More Parks behind the scenes delights from Retta and a good reminder that Aziz’s new show Master of None lands on Netflix in two days!

Continuing the Parks and Rec theme and combining it with the musical that like many people I can’t stop listening to at the moment. The fact that Ben Schwartz has Jean Ralphio’s faked death headstone is also aces.

There’s a whole lot of late shoot not so happy face from the B99 team.

And then these face parts expressions.

Entering the Halloween portion and You’re the Worst doubled down on Sunday Funday this season with a fantastic tapestry of scares, amazing costumes, hilarity and relationship drama.

Which Aya Cash then used as an IRL dress-up solution because why not? These wings give me so many teen flashbacks and I still have a pair stuffed in the back of my wardrobe.

Bowling shoes plus Halloween equals this fun set-up on Sleepy Hollow. Abbie’s Beyonce is one of the best costumes I have seen on TV.

January Jones continues her excellent Insta hashtag game and a spot on look for Halloween.

Look who came back to The Mindy Project! Although I still want a talk show with Adam Pally and Ben Schwartz to be more than a onetime thing.

The Flash set looks like a lot of fun…

I haven’t watched this week’s Scream Queens yet and while I keep fluctuating between enjoyment and eye roll toward this show (standard reaction to a Ryan Murphy project) this pairing does raise my interest levels. Now to make the Gwyneth thing actually happen.

Speaking of horror show and Maya Kazan’s got the most terrifying addition to her look on The Knick.

The returning shows keep on coming and so do the cast reunions on this week’s “Behind the Insta-Scenes.” Plus costume treats galore and other on-set antics.

Jane the Virgin is back (!) and this lady will be guest starring soon (!). It is all the better knowing Rogelio will be involved somehow.

And now a message of love from the Jane the Virgin cast.

Meanwhile here is a regular costume fitting (this dress is fabulous) and Entertainment Weekly has more behind the scenes snaps courtesy of Yael Grobglas.

Game of Thrones costume sneak peeks courtesy of Emilia Clarke. And for a moment I thought Daenerys was going to be rocking a knit beanie this season (not really, but the wig net does look like winter head wear).

Gabby Sidibe’s caption just made me laugh a whole lot.

It kinda looks like Taraji P. Henson and Jussie Smollett are reacting to Gabby’s previous photo. Instead they were watching Empire and this really could be in reference to any number of scenes.

A treasure trove of patterned and colorful garments for Mindy Kaling to try on for a Mindy Project fitting. My eyes are instantly drawn to the starry number.

The steady stream of shows returning to set for the fall season continues and we’ve got a mix of weekly favorites such as The Mindy Project and Orange is the New Black with some new faces. Plus magazine cover flashbacks, editorial dance parties and some style highs on this week’s “Behind the Insta-Scenes.”

Jane the Virgin is back for season 2 in October (Monday 12) and the cast are looking all kinds of adorable as they sit down and fist bump over their first table read of the new TV year. And I just remembered Britney Spears is going to be on the show, which might send me down another happy Britney gif hole. I am more than fine with this.

Cute summer dress goals with a twist of 1960s inspiration courtesy of Mae Whitman – who killed it on the Teen Choice Awards red carpet – in Rachel Antonoff when she appeared on The Tonight Show. Whitman got to squish up with Kevin Spacey and Keegan Michael Key and various others in a phone booth and this dress held up well.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 Feb

A big pre-Oscar weekend style edition of “Out of the Box” with NYFW runway watching style, Costume Designers Guild Awards, Vanity Fair celebrating Young Hollywood and the Essence Black Women in Hollywood event.

Natasha Lyonne and Nicki MinajNicki Minaj and Natasha Lyonne at the Alexander Wang runway show this week pulling their best front row DGAF faces.

Allison WilliamsAllison Williams’ style leans towards the classic and she looks at home in matching Spring 2015 Michael Kors floral crop top and skirt at the Michael Kors runway show. With the current New York weather I suddenly turn into my mother and get concerned about how cold she must be,

Christina HendricksA super sophisticated look for Christina Hendricks at Zac Posen in Zac Posen. That is an excellent shade of red lipstick and I’m already getting weepy about the end of Mad Men whenever I see one of the cast members.

Alison WrightDitching the 80s frumpy sweaters for something with an air of relaxed cool at the Tracy Reese show is Alison Wright from The Americans and I am particularly eyeing up her necklace. Wright is also demonstrating how you can do cold weather legs and still look fashion ready.

Kiernan ShipkaMoving on to the Costume Designers Guild Award and Kiernan Shipka is a vision in Oscar de la Renta. This lady is incredible. Also *sob* (see earlier Christina Hendricks remark).

Nicole BeharieOf course we know that actresses are not going to mirror the style of the characters they play (see Alison Wright from The Americans), however as I am so used to seeing Nicole Beharie in a range of leather jackets, jeans and boots on Sleepy Hollow this color/pattern Luis Antonio explosion at the Vanity Fair Young Hollywood event is a fun change-up.

Uzo AdubaThe OITNB ladies have been doing the award and party circuit (deservedly so) and I might have the opposite problem when Netflix gifts us with the next season readjusting to seeing them in their prison beige. Uzo Aduba is a picture of sophistication at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon in this pretty floral L.K. Bennett dress and orange Stuart Weitzman heels.

Laverne CoxPleats are a clothing weakness for me and Laverne Cox does understated elegance which is perfect for this daytime Essence event wearing a Whistles skirt with a Theory top.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Jan

The onslaught of award shows has slowed down and with TCA coming to a close this is a slightly quieter week. Fear not as there are still some awards to be given out before the SAGs/Oscars – the SAG Awards are this Sunday – and various promotional events too. Plus the return of a character look of the week.

Keri Russell and Matthew RhysStarting with one final TCA panel and I am thrilled The Americans is back for season 3 next week (January 28). I am also happy to see Keri Russell ditching her signature black/white choices and embracing some color and pattern in an olive-green Balenciaga leather skirt with a Saint Laurent leopard print shirt. This pairing particularly with the bow element sounds like it shouldn’t work, but it looks fantastic and Russell continues her style reign. Polka dot points for Matthew Rhys thanks to his tie which brightens up the grey.

Joanne FroggattThe British Consulate in LA hosted an afternoon tea to celebrate Wolf Hall this week – what better way to celebrate something concerning British royalty than with a very British sounding event – and Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt is doing the flirty summer dress thing in Issa. I hope the ground isn’t too soft as I’m picturing those gold Giuseppe Zanotti sandals sinking into the grass.

Emma WillisAt the National Television Awards presenter Emma Willis embraced her fondness for yellow Roksanda Ilincic in another incredible outfit. Pairing a crop top with a skirt this floaty adds an edginess to this look and ensures Willis stands out in the style stakes.

Maisie Williams NTAMaisie Williams embraces the menswear trend at the National Television Awards in a fantastic Diesel Gold suit and this is a fun play on the lady tux. The jacket chain and white top with black neckband are the kind of things it helps to be 17 to wear and Maisie Williams continues to have fun with her outfit choices at events like this. Bonus red lipstick points are awarded of course.

Sleepy HollowAs I mentioned in the intro this is the return of a character look of the week with Ichabod Crane on Sleepy Hollow going for a slightly dressier approach as it is date night, which turns into painting horrorshow. At least he didn’t get too much blood on his high stand collar; hopefully it will come out in the wash. Plus he also got to air his grievance about modern dress “How can one be both business and casual?” Abbie’s sticking to her standard all dark attire and I’m forever thrilled she gets to wear boots like these ones rather than running in heels.

Best of TV Costuming 2014: The Collection

31 Dec

2014 is coming to a close and it has been a fantastic year for television across a variety of platforms. There has never been so much choice so there are of gaps in my viewing and shows I want to catch up on still; Fargo I am looking at you. As with last year’s rundown I wanted to explore the best of what I had watched over the year with a focus on costuming and here is the collection of “Best of TV Costuming 2014” essays and posts.

The Americans plaid and spotsThe Marriage Disguise on The Americans

The wigs and costumes are amazing; however I wanted to shift the focus and look at the disguises Philip and Elizabeth wear on a daily basis in their home life. Season 2 saw more of a blurring between the roles they perform as parents, husband/wife and with their duty to their country.

John Oliver made a more than successful transition from Daily Show correspondent to host of his own show and he did so in checked shirt style.

The Good Wife 5.17The Good Wife and Grieving

We are accustomed to seeing Alicia Florrick is tailored suits with a wine cardigan being the most casual her clothing gets, but this changed after a tragic loss (and this year’s biggest WHAAAAAAAT?! moment) as she dug out the sweats and took to her bed. There was also this very long time fight with Peter that had me cheering Alicia on.

The Music Monday Edition – Transparent

This year’s best TV soundtrack is courtesy of one of 2014 best shows and the choice of music on Transparent hit the nostalgia cues elevating the painful and joy filled moments. Plus I talked about music formats from the beloved records on the show to Spotify playlists.

Best of TV Costuming 2014: The Year of the Leather Jacket

22 Dec

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2014″ costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items that we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking, we want to look at this year’s TV through the prism of costume.

Clothing confession time – I have never owned a leather jacket; in fact I don’t think I have ever tried one on. Or anything made of leather aside from bags or shoes. It is one of those items (much like my fear of jumpsuits, which is a story for another day) that has always intimidated me because my style is more Sandy pre makeover than post (the leather jumpsuit in Grease is the perfect combination of my clothing fears). Leather jackets have been so ubiquitous on TV this year that Vulture compiled a slideshow of all the women who had worn them at the start of the fall season. We’re going back a little further and compiling a list of the Top 5 leather jacket wearers this year and maybe 2015 will be the year I try one on. I will probably settle for a leather pleated skirt.

In no particular order here are the women who make me want to wear leather and what is really great about this list is it covers sitcom, drama and genre shows. Leather is not bound by one type of storytelling.

The Good Wife 5.18 Kalinda and DianeKalinda Sharma wears several shades of leather on The Good Wife including this stunning collarless zipped peplum oxblood number (from episode 5.18 “All Tapped Out) and I’d say a good 93% of her wardrobe includes some form of leather. Even her dresses that aren’t all leather have leather accents.

Abbie leather jacketLeather jackets are to Abbie Mills’ attire as Ichabod’s trusty colonial coat (and his new replicas) is to his wardrobe on Sleepy Hollow. Abbie’s costuming is relatively fuss free; it is both practical and it is still classically stylish. There is also an air of authority when wearing this type of outerwear and gives the impression of someone who is not easily intimidated, which is why characters from law enforcement have a tendency to rock this look.

Diaz leather jacketSuch as Rosa Diaz from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It is a trope of sorts to have a character like Diaz in this attire and it is also used to distinguish her look from Amy Santiago’s softer, tailored wardrobe but the show has fun with what could become a cliche.

Kitty leather jacketOn Elementary, Kitty is wearing the same All Saints biker jacket as Diaz’s one from the shot above and while her character isn’t strictly a police officer she does work in this arena. Kitty’s attire is nothing like Joan’s for a reason; she is not simply a Joan carbon copy Sherlock is trying to recreate. Instead her penchant for leather (including her Doc Marten boots) is a way to project an image of strength after everything she has been through.

The Americans 2.13 Elizabeth leather jacketElizabeth doesn’t look all that thrilled by her coat choice considering the way her hands are stuffed into the pockets and the snow on the ground behind her. From the season 2 finale of The Americans Elizabeth is dressed in the way I think she is most comfortable in (aside from the weather) as she appears as herself and not in her mom attire or work clothes. This is spy Elizabeth. And what do we have here, but a new shot from the season 3 promo shoot revealing that leather comes in both his and hers:

Another off set encounter, but I wasn’t going to leave off this adorable Stark sister reunion from the super smiley Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. Very much digging Williams’ lipstick color too.
