Out of the Box: Look of the Week

2 Mar

Oscars weekend is here! But before this blog becomes awash with super fancy gowns there are a number of other events including the star-studded premiere for A Wrinkle in Time, the Essence Women in Hollywood luncheon, more fashion week and some stunning magazine covers to enjoy.Janelle Monáe sartorially dominated awards season last year. Now she is back with new music to dance to and this stunning hot pink Wolk ladysuit. The black and white touches are still present, but Monáe is very good at changing things up. A beautiful Vionnet gown for Gugu Mbatha-Raw that is part Grecian, part rainbow dream. Angela Bassett looks like a disco queen in sequin Greta Constantine. Take me to Studio 54.The cast of A Wrinke in Time went to Disneyland as part of the promotional train. And Mindy Kaling wore polka dots without looking too Minnie Mouse. In excellent TV casting news; Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira are reuniting for the mini-series adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah.  The pair attended the 2018 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Oscars Luncheon yesterday (it was also Lupita’s birthday) where Gurira was honored.

There’s a fun ’80s twist to Lupita’s Ronald van der Kemp floral and snakeskin print mini. And Danai Gurira’s gone for an ethereal Loewe frock, but it is her stacked heels that I am coveting hard. Two very different ’70s style inspiration points, two outfits that look fabulous. Rainbow tassels for Tiffany Haddish, all the sequins for Yvonne Orji.

Also this video is from last week, but it is worth watching again. So many amazing ladies at this event and so many TV Ate My Wardrobe faves. The pattern and bold color of these outfits makes me so happy. At Paris Fashion Week, Isabelle Huppert leans into a classic look at Dior. This is an outfit I would wear, but I would not exude this level of cool.

I also stopped myself from using chic because now all I can hear is Reynolds Woodcock’s disdain for this word.It has been over a year since Westworld graced our screens, but the season two April 22 return date has snuck up on me. Well, there is still over a month to go and yet Entertainment Weekly is getting the hype machine going early with this new cover. Perhaps there is a need for a longer promo window to match the time it has been off screens.

Dolores and Maeve were the standout characters from season one so I am thrilled they are the chosen cover stars. And that Maeve has ditched her gowns for pants. The Teen Vogue print edition is no more, but that doesn’t mean the end of the Teen Vogue cover; the first digital only cover takes the big group shot that magazines like Vanity Fair and The Hollywood Reporter often deliver and makes it awesome.

So who is on the cover? Bria Vinaiti (The Florida Project), Sasha Lane (Hellboy), Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), Ellie Bamber (The Nutcracker), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Laura Harrier (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Storm Reid (A Wrinkle in Time) and Awkwafina (Ocean’s 8).

One thing I always end up talking about with the THR drama actress cover is what color scheme they go for with pastels being a go to palette choice. There are pastels here, but it isn’t bridesmaid leaning (thanks Kirsten Dunst for that comment). A mix of bold color, pretty dresses, ladysuits, flats, heels; there is a through line even if there are many different styles at play. I would love to see THR take a page out of Teen Vogue’s style book for the next roundtable season. I want to frame this cover. And for all things Lady Bird, I was joined by long time Teen TV collaborator Julie Hammerle to discuss the movie, how it relates to the Teen TV we have previously discussed and our own experiences. It is really fun.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Jan

Last week felt like a busy “Out of the Box,” then the Golden Globes and so many other events took place. Coverage of the very different Golden Globes can be found across three posts including the activists that attended and why it is important to credit designers. Being a feminist and caring about fashion are two concepts that don’t have to exist separately.

Post Globes parties, other awards, premieres and looks from TCA panels are featured. For the Critics’ Choice awards—which were held last night—there will be a rundown post soon. Busy Philipps is usually Michelle Williams’ award show date. But after discussing using her place of privilege in respect to what has been going on in Hollywood in her Harper’s Bazaar interview, Williams came up with the idea of bringing activists as guests. Williams was accompanied by Tarana Burke, the woman who created #MeToo over a decade ago and seven other A-list actresses followed suit.

Don’t even get me started on the shit Marky Mark pulled with regard to the reshoots.

Later in the night the pair did hangout, Busy’s Stories included the ridiculous question a paparazzi dude asked Michelle “What’s next for women?” But if Busy did decide to put this Q on a tee or sweatshirt and donate the money to #TimesUp I would be first in line.

Black iridescent Jeffrey Dodd looks great on Busy, but I am also very much a fan of their day after outfits. This is such a fun spin on the ladysuit by Sonequa Martin-Green; cropped/high-waisted Vitor Zerbinato suit with high ruffled collar Elisabetta Franchi shirt. The latter is making me feel like my Alienist as a style influence prediction isn’t totally off.Amy Brenneman looks cool af at the HBO Golden Globes after party and I am still mad Leftovers got no love. I never thought I would be this enamored with a sheer turtleneck, but holy wow is Tessa Thompson working another fabulous twist on menswear inspiration in Alexandre Vauthier.

And after calling out Lena Dunham for doing the most Lena Dunham thing, Thompson got embroiled in an apology/not apology news cycle. She handled it well and with eloquence, even though her first statement didn’t need explaining or walking back as it sounded pretty accurate. But, Hollywood. Or as Ira would say, “Keep It” (check out his new podcast, which is also great).Including this photo mostly because of how great Gaten Matarazzo and Joe Keery are together in season 2 of Stranger Things. Also because I just remembered Keery was in Molly’s Game. His hair was just as impressive. Gillian Anderson got a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week. Her new shorter, blonder do has been getting quite the workout this week, much to my delight. This silver number by Sophia Kah is my favorite of the three dresses she has worn this week. The specs with the glitz are excellent and X-Files co-star Annabeth Gish is also crushing the style stakes.

Oh, and this week’s episode of The X-Files was incredible, especially in comparison with last week’s mythology mess. So many fun Mulder and Scully scenes. Their chemistry is still off the charts and enough to make me feel like I am fourteen again. Lots of giggling.  There’s been a lot of dressed up Greta Gerwig this week, but here she is at a SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversation event in a super cozy sweater just to mix it up.

After Lady Bird won at the Golden Globes, Gerwig was asked about her position on Woody Allen as someone that has worked with him in the past. She fumbled with a non-answer; it was disappointing even if I could recognize that it was once again a woman being asked to justify another man’s abuse. But, she did follow up with a response that is far more definitive on her position and also acknowledges why it is important to speak up.At the 2018 Film Society Of Lincoln Center & Film Comment luncheon, Greta Gerwig got daytime dressed up in this fabulous pop of floral color. Get Out’s Lil Rel Howery took the suit/turtleneck pairing to new levels in this amazing color combination. At the National Board of Review Awards, Gal Gadot wears an Elie Saab dress that is reminiscent of her blue frock from Wonder Woman. Minus the giant sword of course. The Black Panther press tour is approaching and I am so ready. Lupita Nyong’o looks in command of a space ship in a sparkly Balmain ensemble.I finished Maureen Orth’s Vulgar Favors this week, the book the new American Crime Story is based on so my anticipation levels for the show are now even higher. Penelope Cruz gives Versace-adjacent vibes in velvet custom Stella McCartney.Queen Judith Light has been cast in the perfect part for her and she lights up the red carpet as always. As far as I can tell, Anna Chancellor is not in American Crime Story, but I wish she was. But I do love this patterned frock and ankle boots combo even if it looks more Sundance attire.

This is also a good time to mention how much I miss The Hour. If any show deserves another season it is this one.TCA is still going, but it is the FX panels from last Friday that I am mostly interested in. Including Edgar Ramirez wearing a lovely sweater while discussing American Crime Story. I would love to know what Darren Criss is reacting to. The last TCA panel for The Americans and Keri Russell brought out the polka dot pussy-bow blouse big guns. I’m still in denial that it is ending. And their TV family was rather well coordinated, all getting the black/grey/white memo. I mentioned this on Twitter, but Keidrich Sellati looks like he should be hanging out with the Stranger Things teens in star collared Givenchy. Holly Taylor’s long jacket/legs out is the perfect spin on panel attire and I am still super impressed with how The Americans broke the teens in a prestige drama curse.Atlanta returns for season 2 in March and I am so ready. At the TCA panel Zazie Beetz brought all the floral ensemble glory, while Donald Glover and Brain Tyree Henry worked the more casual versions of their red carpet style. At yesterday’s HBO session, Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams were there to discuss 2 Dope Queens. And Phoebe is offering up another fun take on the ladysuit including a faux fur sash. I am very much looking forward to these specials.

Prints, Jumpsuits and Red Dancing Lady Dresses at Summer TCA

3 Aug

The Television Critics’ Association 2017 Summer press tour is currently in its second week and to stop “Out of the Box” from being super long, I’ve decided to do a separate post dedicated to the panel attire that has caught my attention.

One key thing when picking out an outfit for TCA is how it will look sitting down because that’s what you’re gonna be doing and most of the pictures will be from this angle. Occasionally there will be the entrance, arrival or party shots, but the only guarantee is that sitting down one.

Also you don’t want to be going too formal; think perfect daytime attire such as fancy office or even something that would be wedding guest appropriate. There aren’t strict rules for these kinds of events and there is plenty of scope for getting it right. As you will see from looks below.Outlander is back next month (!) with Jamie and Claire separated by time and at the panel they revealed when you can expect to see them reunited. Caitriona Balfe chose my favorite kind of look for TCA – see also here – in a fabulous print. This Marni frock looks great sitting down and a bold pattern is always a winner.Balfe’s onscreen Outlander daughter Sophie Skelton also went the print route and one issue with the whole sitting down panel wear is that it can be the ultimate tease; sometimes we only get a glimpse. But this is where Instagram comes in.

Because we get behind the scenes swishy shots like this one and it turns out what I thought was a blouse and skirt is actually this dress by Maje. Instagram really has made hunting down pieces of clothing/make-up that much easier.
Confession; I have never seen Everwood so the big reunion panel didn’t have the same emotional effect on me, but I do appreciate a cast that likes each other this much. And Emily VanCamp’s pajama-adjacent floral jacket paired with skinny jeans and heels gets two enthusiastic thumbs up from me.Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Vella Lovell gives great jumpsuit in this bold green number and yet I still haven’t acquired my first jumpsuit. Still a 2017 style goal.

I fell down a Crazy Ex-Girlfriend song hole on YouTube a couple of weeks ago and it was wonderful and after reading the panel highlights I am now even more excited for season 3. It feels like Sonequa Martin-Green is giving me that look because she knows I’m gonna moan about the color of her shoes, which I was going to. But also red Louboutin soles are great for sitting down shots because generally you will see that flash of color.

Also that floral dress is delightful and I would love to know what shade/brand of lipstick she is wearing.
Speaking of red soles and Hayley Atwell demonstrates my point perfectly at the Starz panel for the Howard’s End miniseries. A co-production with the BBC and this cast is fabulous; I will follow Atwell wherever she goes and Matthew Macfadyen and Tracey Ullman definitely make this an enticing project.

There is of course another very famous version of Howard’s End and while I’m not a huge Merchant Ivory fan it will be interesting to see if the mini-series can step out of shadow of the 1992 Oscar winning film. Girlfriend Experience co-creator Amy Seimetz shows how a bold color pump can brighten up any outfit and I’m very into the whole shirt buttoned all the way up thing at the moment. And of course ladysuits.First of all I think this shot is pretty funny in that it looks like Ioan Gruffudd and Joanne Froggatt are being proclaimed as liars.

This is of course the name of their new Sundance show and I also love that Froggatt’s red Johanna Ortiz frock is giving off serious dancing lady emoji vibes. Gruffudd scrubs up very well and his beard game is strong. Also I miss his show where he couldn’t die. That was fun.The women of Top of the Lake: China Girl did not coordinate as well Nicole Kidman’s other co-stars from The Beguiled and this covers the spectrum of panel attire with Elisabeth Moss leaning into pattern delights in Camilla and Marc, Gwendoline Christie wearing menswear inspired cool, Nicole Kidman doing her usual ruffled frock thing and Alice Englert leaning maybe a little too casual.

For more summer TCA style head here and come back tomorrow for another bumper “Out of the Box.”

Comic-Con Fashion Round-Up Part 1: The Entertainment Weekly Party

13 Jul

Going away the weekend Comic-Con is on means I have a lot of catching up to do this morning as this annual event continues to attract stars from a whole host of TV shows and movies, which means plenty of outfits to scroll through.

Let’s ease into the week with the Entertainment Weekly shindig and as tends to be the way at Comic-Con there are different degrees of dressed up; this variety of styling makes this a fun rundown as there’s everything from 50s style prom to funky summer dresses.

Maisie Williams EWThe texture of Maisie Williams’ dress suggests something from the ocean which ties in nicely with her oyster girl cover story from Game of Thrones as well as her recent conservation work.

Ashley MadekweAshley Madekwe could travel back to the Studio 54 heyday and blend right in wearing this amazing Saint Laurent gold dress.

Katie CassidyAs you can see from this party gold is on trend at the moment with Katie Cassidy working a glitzy floral pattern mini.

Lily JamesGoing for a slightly dressier look is Lily James in shimmery Altuzarra and she continues her fashion hot streak after a very strong Cinderella promo tour.

Sonequa Martin-GreenThe Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green is a bold pattern queen in this kaleidoscope print frock.

Matt Bomer, Sarah Paulson, Angela BassettNow this is a group I would want to hang out with at this party and Sarah Paulson’s Suno dress is rather understated for her and looks great. Angela Bassett continues to look the best in anything and Matt Bomer’s suit is far more interesting than all of his very safe Magic Mike XXL promo tour attire. Not quite sure how I feel about the super white sneakers as they instantly distract from everything else. But it also a relaxed affair so they also kinda make sense.

Danielle Panabaker EWA very cute purple frock from The Flash’s Danielle Panabaker and I love her messy fishtail braid to boot.

Candice AccolaFun summer florals from Candice Accola with her hot pink lipstick serving up an excellent extra pop of color.

Camren BicondovaCamren Bicondova from Gotham is wearing the skirt version of the Alice + Olivia dress that Aya Cash wore a couple of months ago and it looks just as great here especially when paired with a plain black tee.

Carice van HoutenCarice van Houten’s skirt looks like really fancy silk wrapping paper, but the simple blue blouse balances this look out and once again she is wearing killer lipstick.

Jennifer MorrisonThis is very much 50s fancy from Jennifer Morrison and while it is maybe a tad dressy for this event it is still rather fun. And maybe she is cosplaying Betty Draper or Libby Masters.
