Best of the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet

4 Mar

Happy Oscars Day! But really this means Happy Day After the Independent Spirit Awards! My official favorite award season red carpet. The reason it is my favorite? Don’t get me wrong I love a fancy gown, but the ensembles at the Spirit Awards are all about having fun with fashion. These are the kind of outfits I would wear, suits have more color and the casual/fancy vibe is infectious.

Plus this is a ceremony where Nick Kroll and John Mulaney are the hosts and Timothée Chalamet wins Best Actor.

And for some Oscar weekend reading, check out my deep dive into the many eggs that feature in the Best Picture nominees for Little White Lies.

As with last year’s Spirit Awards, this was a blisteringly funny opening monologue. This time they called out some of the very bad men of Hollywood including the terrible apologies. And they don’t just limit it to Weinstein and Spacey. Mulaney/Kroll they did not drop the ball on this one and they really should host more award shows.

“Chalamet, you stay.” Especially because he gives the most adorable speech. He makes me believe that things will be okay.

For all the award speeches head here.

To the fashion! *Fires up “Crash Into Me,” starts weeping*

Both Saoirse Ronan and Beanie Feldstein look like ’60s queens. Ronan has a whole Twiggy thing going on in embellished Prada. Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani have consistently been the best dressed couple during award season and the press tour for The Big Sick. This is no different.

Here they demonstrate how you can pattern clash as a couple to the highest sartorial level. I am weak for stripes; Emily’s Whitney Mero dress is hitting all the right spots. Kumail is looking all kinds of Hannibal in ASOS plaid.

This dress also serves up so much photo drama. For their acceptance speech for Best First Screenplay.

Yesterday I found out that Dee Rees has been using Beyoncé’s stylist, this is another fantastic suit choice in a season of fantastic suit choices.

Ladysuits and Capes would be the name of my boutique (I’m sure I can think of something punny, but it is early). Dee Rees and Sarah Broom are high on the list of couple style goals. The lining of Broom’s cape and everything about this outfit is elegant af.

Mudbound won the Robert Altman Award and here is Dee Rees’ speech.Last night, I mentioned on Twitter that Aubrey Plaza always looks great at this award show and this is another dress I am coveting hard. Peter Pan collar and the contrasting sleeves on this Miu Miu frock elevates it. While I don’t love the sheer parts of Elisabeth Olsen’s Zuhair Murad dress, I am thrilled Ingrid Goes West won Best First Feature. If I could have any ladysuit it would be a green velvet ladysuit. Sarah Silverman is living out my dream in Hottie + Lord.Pleats, beautiful green pleats. Allison Williams looks a vision in Andrew Gn.Ava DuVernay is another Independent Spirit Awards repeat style queen. This time in puffed sleeves custom Greta Constantine.Patterned slip dress sexiness for Betty Gabriel in Tadashi Shoji. It’s almost animal print, without being animal print.Leaning into the leopard print trend is Margot Robbie in Louis Vuitton. This is what I mean when I say how much fun can be had on this red carpet.

The Independent Spirit Awards is an event that encourages good suits. A bold suit for Chadwick Boseman isn’t just for the Black Panther press tour; this Burberry polka dot look is incredible. And we’re in luck as Boseman has posted a lot of good photos to his Instagram, also featuring Black Panther co-stars Danai Gurira and Daniel Kaluuya. Get Out won Best Feature, Jordan Peele won Best Director. Peele also won Best Jacket in red double-breasted Calvin Klein. Patterned button-down shirts feature a lot on the new series of Queer Eye; the Fab Five would definitely be into everything Mike Colter is doing here. The turtleneck/suit jacket combo is winner, the sneakers work at this event and my Jay Ellis swoon levels are high.I’m still not quite over how terrifying Barry Keoghan is in The Killing of a Secret Deer, but this is adorable.Feeeeeeeeelings. So many CJ and Josh feeeeeeeeelings.A photo of a photo being taken and I love everything about this. Also Allison Janney looks flaming hot in hot pink Pamella Roland.Be still my Lady Bird loving heart. Why yes I am watching this again today.

The 2018 Golden Globes Red Carpet Part III

8 Jan

Now to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s third and final rundown of the red carpet. I share my thoughts on the black dress code show of solidarity here and for a menswear twist on women’s awards fashion check out this post.Viola Davis is always a red carpet fave and this occasion is no different. For Vulture, Angelica Jade Bastién wrote about the Best Moments in Black Excellence at the Golden Globes and one such moment is Viola Davis’ afro. Everyone wearing black doesn’t mean twinning all over the place. Instead it lets style personality shine; hair and accessories have power too.

And Davis’ velvet Brandon Maxwell frock is every flame emoji. Such a strong look. Tracee Ellis Ross also knows how to make a statement through what she wears; the hair wrap, Marc Jacobs halter dress, bold red lip and pearl earrings do just this. No I still haven’t seen Lady Bird (much to my dismay), but I did get emotional when both the film and Saoirse Ronan won. Metallic accents are one way to dazzle, so are dramatic shoulders as Ronan proves in Atelier Versace. Greta Gerwig keeps things simple in Oscar de la Renta, jazzing it up with a gold Tiffany necklace.

I love how breathlessly happy this speech is.
Speaking of gold, Kelly Clarkson looks like she has a fabulous bionic arm in custom Christina Siriano. From a gold sleeve to a silver one. Mary J. Blige sparkles in custom Alberta Ferretti gown.Warming my soul is this Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain reunion. We are deep in the sequin and metallic section so at some point I’m gonna run out of ways to say sparkly. Spencer is in glitzy Tadashi Shoji, Chastain wears diamante-embellished Armani Prive. Sarah Paulson loves a sequin. This is no different when the dress code is black and she looks great in Calvin Klein by Appointment. Giving strong Jolie leg is Issa Rae, in smoking hot caped Atelier Prabal Gurung. The emerald necklace is the perfect finishing touch. From the front, Dakota Johnson’s Gucci gown is simple elegance. From the back it reveals a different metallic story. New Gucci continues to deliver. The best Diane Kruger dress in an age and one that makes me think of Daenerys’ season seven look. This isn’t Targaryen, but Prada.Embellished collars are my weakness, Elisabeth Moss in custom Dior is right in my wheelhouse.

Moss quoted directly from Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale words and I’m feeling emotional just typing this (lack of sleep might be a contributing factor).Isabelle Huppert looks like she is wearing armor, sequin Chloe armor. And yep she looks cool as fuck, as per.

Gwendoline Christie often sports armor, but there is nothing metallic her. A ruffled Giles number is just as bold.Cersei would never, but Lena Headey’s gone for subtle romance in Elie Saab and I love this change up. Looking elegant as always, Ava DuVernay in Armani Prive. Also adding glitzy glamour to proceedings. Gillian Anderson icy blonde locks gives her a ’40s movie star vibe, the super caped sleeve Solace London adds a contemporary touch. I bow down to her, always.

I have a feeling Gillian enjoyed Natalie Portman’s Best Director intro. If Caitriona Balfe ever gets stuck in the ’20s she should make sure this flapper-adjacent Chanel Couture number is in her suitcase. Nothing but respect for my presidents.

And their speeches.

All of their speeches.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 Nov

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving—yeah I know it was yesterday—to all celebrating! Even with the four-day weekend, there are still plenty of red carpet moments and award season antics. The AMAs delivered some sartorial highs, the Independent Spirit Award nominations have been announced, Call Me By Your Name is out today and there’s a reunion that makes my heart swell.

I realized last week that “Out of the Box” has turned into something a little more than just the best looks; it has become a weekly newsletter of sorts with a mix of outfits and other things that excite me including trailers and performances. The level of activity on TV Ate My Wardrobe is less than it used to be (because I am writing for other outlets) and this is all very much a work in progress (as is life), but I am thankful I have this outlet to share these weekly observations. Viola Davis is a vision in white caped-sleeve crystal-embroidered Michael Kors Collection at the AMAs and she never disappoints on the red carpet. As the host of the AMAs, Tracee Ellis Ross had numerous outfit changes throughout the night and she made a dramatic impact on her arrival in a stunning custom Stella McCartney sequin gown.

Regular readers will know how much I love Tracee Ellis Ross’ Instagram feed and it showcases the many looks she wore while hosting. I’ve gone for another sparkly number and this video really captures this aspect of the Paco Rabanne matching skirt and top. Another highlight is this tribute to both her mother and Michael Jackson.Clueless reboot, but now Cher is a spy and played by Yara Shahidi. Sign me up. Going against the jewel tone palette she wears as Veronica Lodge on Riverdale is Camila Mendes in a romantic J. Mendel gown.

And for all things Riverdale season 2 style check out my Observer column here
I’ve been listening to Kelly Clarkson’s new album “Meaning of Life” nonstop and holy hell is this Christian Siriano feathered gown serving up super diva feelings.

I love her. They’re not actually sisters, but Claire Foy and Vanessa Kirby very much look like siblings as they both opt for seasonal sparkles of varying lengths—Christian Dior for Foy, Prada for Kirby—at the premiere of The Crown. Foy’s Lisbeth Salander hair looks great and I am super excited for the second season of this show.  The full Ava DuVernay/Ryan Coogler panel transcript is going to be made available soon, but for now enjoy this snippet and DuVernay’s patterned frock.

And the new Wrinkle in Time trailer. Also at VultureFest is Sofia Coppola in an outfit that looks straight from my closet. So of course I am here for it.Jennifer Garner’s giving great slip dress at a screening of her new film The Tribes of Palos Verdes and this week I watched the episode of Felicity where she first makes an appearance.

And as a big Alias fan, I would love to see her reunite with J.J. Abrams in a professional capacity. Maybe Star Wars, maybe something else. Or just get Garner a great TV project. At the Film Independent 2018 Spirit Awards press conference, Tessa Thompson goes for pattern clashing Jason Wu and some amazing orange pumps. This is one of my favorite award shows of the season and I am so happy that Nick Kroll and John Mulaney will be back again to host. It is also one of the best red carpets of the entire calendar and Thompson’s look here is very much in line with the kind of thing you can expect from the main event.

For the full list of nominees head here. One movie that has got multiple Spirit Award nominations is the incredible Call Me By Your Name (released today in the US) and the press tour for this movie has included a number appearance delights. It is a movie I watched twice at the cinema within the space of one week and it is probably my favorite film of the year. I finished the book at the weekend and the soundtrack has been playing in-between those Kelly Clarkson listens.

Timothée Chalamet is having quite the year and he gets a great plaid suit modeling shot in GQ. Hopefully we will see more of this kind of suit wearing throughout award season.

I fell down a GoldDerby video hole the other day, but I still don’t know where Chalamet got this eagle sweater number from. It is information I would like to have.Armie Hammer covers The Hollywood Reporter this week and he is staring deep into your soul.  In the interview he talks about the hypocrisy of Hollywood and the Oscars with how Casey Affleck was lauded while Nate Parker was shutout. There’s also a discussion about his interesting career trajectory and the joyous experience of making Call Me By Your Name. And Hammer in chunky knits. Always appreciated.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

21 Jul

Comic-Con kicked off yesterday and we have a few looks from panels and events. If Sundance is my favorite winter event when it comes to celeb casual fashion, then SDCC might be my fave summer event. I’ve said it before, but while I love a fancy gown, a more casual environment is what I really look forward to; these are the ones that actually influence what I might wear.

This is a bumper “Out of the Box” as Disney gave us a star-studded pattern extravaganza at D23 from the casts of A Wrinkle in TimeStar Wars and those who have voiced Disney princesses over the last 30 years.

Patterns continue at the Valerian premiere and magazines continue to crush the excellent cover/editorial game. One of the most exciting things to come out of D23 was the new trailer for A Wrinkle in Time and everyone looks fabulous. Coordinated without being matchy matchy and delivering on daytime looks to applaud. The trailer is also a costume design lovers dream.

Ava DuVernay gives both bold print dress in Prada and fabulous pumps, super summery Isabel Marant for Reese Witherspoon, Oprah is delivering on fancy office vibes/I want those glasses and the best outfit from the ladies comes courtesy of Storm Reid in a Chloe pinafore frock and striped blouse.

In the all-important matter of the Chris List, Pine has been top of mine since Wet Hot American Summer and the salt and pepper beard he’s working, cements that position. This Hokusaï wave print Sandro shirt is fabulous and I would very much like the sweatshirt version. And shopping the men’s section during the sales is how I end up with so many excellent striped t-shirts.The Force Awakens press tour is a major highlight from the recent slew of blockbuster franchises with a big cast; it was both fun and everyone looked great. It wasn’t about playing it safe and the fashion choices were never boring.

New cast additions include Queen Laura Dern – who along with Nicole Kidman is having A YEAR – and Kelly Marie Tran. Tran’s first Star Wars related appearance a couple of months ago had us hailing her as one to look out for and she does not disappoint once again. Laura Dern’s frock is giving me some ’70s feelings and it will not shock you when I say that I love it.

The new behind the scenes footage released at D23 is delightful and emotional; it is safe to say the room got a little dusty when I watched it.
Regular readers will know how I feel about ladysuits and Gwendoline Christie so this right in my wheelhouse. It looks great in motion and everything about this soothes me. I still miss Selfie and can’t help but think of this wonderful and underappreciated show whenever Karen Gillan appears on this site. What I love about this look is the Miu Miu frock is nearing the maybe too fancy for this event end, but is balanced with understated hair and makeup.

Eliza would probably have something to say about this. The shoes she would approve of. I am a fan of all of this. The new Wreck-It Ralph movie gave Disney a reason to celebrate the women who have voiced princesses over the last 30 plus years. Princess is not defined by who wears a crown.

So much color and pattern! Here is the full line-up from left to right:

Paige O’Hara (Belle – Beauty and the Beast), Irene Bedard (Pocahontas), Mandy Moore (Rapunzel – Tangled), Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), Sarah Silverman (Vanellope von Schweetz – Wreck-It Ralph), Kristen Bell (Anna – Frozen), Kelly Macdonald (Merida – Brave), Anika Noni Rose (Tiana – The Princess and the Frog), Linda Larkin (Jasmin – Aladdin), and Jodi Benson (Ariel – The Little Mermaid).
Kelly Macdonald’s simple blouse paired with a floral skirt is giving all the heart eyed emoji reactions. It is low-key and yet super stylish. Perfect for this event. Great lipstick too.
I’ve listened to the Moana soundtrack while writing on numerous occasions and Auli’i Cravalho’s voice is an instant pick me up. This is like the photo version of that. And I very much want to grab a cocktail with Anika Noni Rose.Timeless is alive – much to my delight – and Abigail Spencer pattern clashes in a floral frock with leopard print pumps. I wholeheartedly approve.Lots of short shorts and heels at SDCC and Daredevil’s Élodie Yung is giving me starry short sleeve sweater envy. The choppy bob looks great on her. One problem with panel fashion is not getting a full body shot. TV Ate My Wardrobe style queen, Aubrey Plaza is also opting for shorts and giving great two-toned levels of purple. This reminds me that half a season of Legion is still sitting on my DVR unwatched. At the Valerian premiere Natalie Morales – star of another gone to soon sitcom, oh hey Trophy Wife – is another vision, in a textured pattern Rivini. So many different purple shades this week and the berry sandals are perfect for this frock.Interview Magazine continues to be good to us and Tatiana Maslany chats with Uzo Aduba about playing multiple characters on Orphan Black including one of my favorite things this show does; when one clone plays another. About this Maslany explains:

“Those moments are the greatest joy. I get to play with all of the things that we do as people where we see somebody a certain way, we judge somebody, we empathize with something in someone—all of the judgments, good and bad, that we have of people and how that makes us behave. If Sarah is playing Alison, Sarah’s judgments about Alison, the impression that she gets and the impersonation that she does. I like playing with the artifice of it and letting the mistakes and the cracks seep through.”

The whole interview is wonderful and Aduba is clearly a member of the Clone Club. It is also another great photo shoot from this publication and it is a picture worthy of an art gallery. The above portrait reminds me of a recent Orphan Black costume highlight. Also worthy of a gallery; this whole Ruth Negga velvet themed editorial for The Edit. In the piece she talks about award season campaigns and how she’s taking a break from work. The question of family arises because she’s an actress in her mid-thirties, but it doesn’t come across in the whole grating “can a woman have it all?” kind of way.Ruth Negga is always a red carpet highlight and she gives major props to her stylist, Karla Welch saying “She’s a huge feminist, and that was important. I don’t have time to go to the gym, and she dresses my body in a way that’s going to give me confidence. I like a sleeve, I like a high neck, that’s my style.”

As with all shoots from The Edit they produce a handy link to shop all the pieces. Sadly they do not provide the bank balance to pay for them.Gifting us with a fun and super stylish cover is Bust and yes I have strong coat and floral summer dress envy. Fall and summer fashion coming together and Gina Rodriguez is making my heart sing here. Bonus appearance by her pooch, Casper.

A Non-Big Little Lies Season 2 Update and More from Variety’s Drama Discussion

21 Jun

Variety’s ‘A Night in the Writer’s Room’ is more of the kind of pre-Emmy nomination events that I get very excited about and this panel includes a lot of interesting shows (and one that doesn’t quite fit the pattern) covering network, cable and streaming. This in itself brings about the subject of the differences of working across these various platforms as several of these writers have experienced both the more traditional model and recent developments.

Also this is a good time to point out that the excellent Queen Sugar returned last night and Ava DuVernay talks about how this project came about. It includes a trip to Maui and I could listen to DuVernay chatting about this show for a long time.

A potential season 2 of Big Little Lies has been coming up a lot during these Emmy campaigning chats – I’m in agreement with Caroline Framke about why it should be a one and done series – and David E. Kelly is unsurprisingly non-committal saying it is all in the hands of author Liane Moriarty. He does have nothing but love for this entire project and set of characters. He also tells an amusing anecdote about how many pages director Jean-Marc Vallée likes to write with.

Both Mr Robot and Westworld had fans theorizing (and guessing correctly early on) so the question of fans guessing major twists is something that is addressed and whether streaming has an advantage here with how quick it gets consumed.

Watch the panel below.

Emmy nominations will be announced Thursday, July 13.

Best of the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet

26 Feb

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are the soothing beachside afternoon jaunt we all need before the hustle and bustle of the Oscars; this is always one of my favorite red carpets of the year.

The outfits tend to be a little more on the chilled out and playful side with both pattern and color out in strong force and while I love the dramatic glamour of the Oscars this is much more my speed. Plus the dudes in suits tend to step out of the usual classic comfort zone and this year is no different.

And you get an incredible opening monologue like this one:

It’s strange seeing John Mulaney and Nick Kroll out of their Gil and George costumes after so many months of Oh, Hello.

Now for the best looks of the afternoon.janelle-monaeJanelle Monáe gives another lesson in how to wear black and white on every red carpet and keep things interesting. This time it is Salvatore Ferragamo and I’m digging those coat slung over the shoulders vibes. Great lipstick as per and as I said on Friday, Monáe is one my Oscar most anticipated.ruth-negga-and-colin-firthAnother person who has been a big awards sartorial presence is Ruth Negga and she is also very much on the anticipated list.

Accompanied by super handsome Loving producer Colin Firth going for the no tie/open button option and Negga is stunning in dramatic floral Delpozo.ava-duvernayFlying in from filming A Wrinkle in Time in New Zealand (as well documented on Instagram by Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon) is Ava DuVernay and this patterned Gucci number ticks so many boxes; pleats, botanicals, fabulous collar.naomie-harrisMulticolor patchwork Chanel for Naomie Harris and I love everything about this look except for the random bit of lace that looks like someone accidentally forgot to cut it off. Don’t be the Topshop school of somehow adding lace or tulle to things that don’t need them.taraji-p-hensonMullet dresses are very much hit or miss for me and Taraji P. Henson’s ethereal Giambattista Valli happily falls into the first category. The slightly windy conditions add some drama and those gold Jimmy Choo sandals are fabulous.nasim-pedradEntering mini dress territory with Nasim Pedrad in textured green florals.aubrey-plazaAubrey Plaza is a regular on this Spirit Awards rundown and the best thing about this is she takes a very different approach each time. Here she has taken a page out of the Janelle Monáe clashing black and white patterns book in a somewhat ’60s trippy Versus Versace top and skirt. Bonus lipstick points too.isabelle-huppertLooking cool as ever – this time in Chloé – and with the award for best actress to boot is Isabelle Huppert and I wonder if she will repeat this win tonight against Emma Stone.jon-hamm-edgar-ramirez-and-jenny-slateJenny Slate is in a handsome men in suits sandwich with Jon Hamm and Edgar Ramirez. Love her choice of Luisa Beccaria pleats and halter for this seaside venue. mahershala-aliNew dad Mahershala Ali continued his fabulous suit streak and the best thing about this is the red shoes he paired it with.

And I am finally seeing Moonlight this afternoon and this has been a very good movie watching weekend. trevante-rhodesKeeping the suave Moonlight cast score high is Trevante Rhodes in a double-breasted grey number paired with oxblood shoes.jaden-piner-and-alex-r-hibbertMore Moonlight and bonus delightful kids alert as Jaden Piner leans casual whereas Alex R. Hibbert does the tuxedo thing (but keeps things chill in white Vans).aldis-hodgeMy favorite suit of the day and Hidden Figures’ Aldis Hodge is giving great mixed patterns. The pocket square/pin/tie details give this three piece suit ensemble the edge over everyone else.viggoI saw rumblings on Twitter the other day that there might be a Casey Affleck upset tonight and that Viggo might be the reason. Regardless of whether he does win the Oscar, he looks great here in burgundy.david-oyelowoDavid Oyelowo had one of my favorite looks at the 2015 Spirit Awards in a knockout blue suit and this year he’s gone for something a little more subdued, but still just as stylish and his tie delivers a splash of color.nick-kroll-and-john-mulaneyAs I mentioned above it is going to take a little bit of time getting used to John Mulaney and Nick Kroll out of their Gil and George costumes/makeup. This is a good start and along with a hilarious and blistering monologue they both look fabulous.annette-beningEnding things on a super smiley Annette Bening looking cool as fuck in a black turtleneck. I saw 20th Century Women yesterday and it was everything I hoped it would be and more. This post has been written to Talking Heads because of this movie.

Come back tomorrow for plenty more red carpet posts.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 Nov

After last week’s pants and ladysuits affair we are returning to a dress filled “Out of the Box” with plenty of bold color, pattern (SO MANY STRIPES) and statement frocks. The pitter patter of awards campaigning is upon us plus premieres and other end of year events are bringing these sartorial treats.

Krysten RitterHappy Jessica Jones Day! And Krysten Ritter looks phenomenal at the New York premiere in ethereal Zuhair Murad Resort 2016 demonstrating the ideal amount of sheer. I am very excited to start this new Netflix series and I’m sure I will have some thoughts on here in the next week or so (depending on how quickly I burn through it).

Lizzy CaplanAnother floaty white ensemble delight from Lizzy Caplan in Thakoon at the Night Before premiere, which manages to capture festive cheer in a subtle fashion. Plus another lesson in sheer that doesn’t make me sadness sigh.

Teyonah ParrisThe Academy events are here and at the 7th annual Governors Awards on Saturday, Teyonah Parris wore this stripe Pedram Couture beauty. Black and metallic silver are perfect for this time of year and Parris is always on top form on the red carpet.

Brie LarsonBrie Larson keeps it super simple in Calvin Klein and stands out in doing so. I cannot wait to see much more of her on the red carpet this award season. Still very much feeling her reaction to Cate Blanchett in a jumpsuit.

Ava DuVernayAnother flawless block color dress and Ava DuVernay’s blue peplum Elvira Jude is striking, as are the gold pumps which are peeking out the bottom.

Emily BluntEmily Blunt is a TV Ate My Wardrobe fave both on and off screen; she constantly makes interesting choices including this shimmery Marc Jacobs resort frock. Loving the leather collar.

Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington adds to the stripe joy in a matching Saloni top and skirt with thankfully not quite matchy matchy Nicholas Kirkwood chevron pumps at the inaugural WWD/Variety Stylemakers event. The work of Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo was recognized with Washington presenting her with the award and after ditching Scandal this season, I just watched the mid-season finale and those costumes really are everything. This one had it all from the fanciest of frocks to incredible coats and an all important wine cardigan, plus the episode was also really great.

Kirsten DunstNow this is pretty much a dream dress and Kirsten Dunst has been appearing a lot on here recently; I think this Gucci chevron-striped frock might be my favorite as it has a very 70s feel to it without looking like she has just come straight from the set of Fargo.

Elizabeth Banks MockingjayPretty Much the Dream Dress Part 2 with Elizabeth Banks in a colorful sequin stripe Dolce & Gabbana number at the LA Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 premiere and this has festive party written all over it.

Elizabeth BanksDouble Elizabeth Banks this week as I couldn’t resist this Giulietta fun play on the LBD at the VH1 Big in 2015 with Entertainment Weekly Awards.

Aubrey PlazaAnd now a twist on a white sporty style mini dress from Aubrey Plaza paired with stacked strappy heels giving this an overall retro feel.

Abbi, Ilana and AmyI just realized that season 3 of Broad City isn’t too far away (okay slightly further away than expected as yesterday it was announced its return will be February 17 instead of the usual January window) and I definitely don’t need an excuse to post a photo of these amazing ladies.

Attending the Worldwide Orphans Gala (of which Amy Poehler has served as an Ambassador of the Arts since 2013) they struck the balance between casual and fancy with Ilana’s matching crop top and skirt combo working like a charm and I am so here for Abbi’s floral wrap. Amy’s sparkly skirt is also super festive appropriate and this outfit also reminds me of how much I love/agree with Rachel Syme’s recent tights essay (although I would’ve gone with a different color pump).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

27 Feb

The Independent Spirit Awards got lost in the Oscar red carpet crazy and because it is one of my favorite red carpet events – there is SO much color and pattern – most of this week’s “Out of the Box” is dedicated to this with a smattering of the post Oscars Vanity Fair party. February is a whirlwind of fancy pants dresses (sometimes literally), so I am glad to round off the month on a high of print and bold tones.

Aubrey PlazaAfter tearfully saying goodbye to TV Ate My Wardrobe style icon April Ludgate it is only right to start with Aubrey Plaza in floral Suno; even though Parks is over it is safe to say Plaza will be gracing these pages a whole bunch.

Jenny SlateI have strong feelings about Jenny Slate, Mary Katrantzou and the color yellow; together this is perfection. Related – I have spent the past few days saying “look like dis” all thanks to this amazing Kroll Show sketch.

Ava DuVernayCombining pockets, print and color for one exceptional ensemble is Ava DuVernay.

Gillian JacobsIt is a cute sundress palooza and Gillian Jacobs is an “Out of the Box” staple when it comes to outfits like this Preen frock and red pumps.

Cate BlanchettCate Blanchett is a style queen and she gets the laidback vibe spot in a heart fluttering Schiaparelli Couture.

Aja Naomi KingMore glorious yellow from How to Get Away with Murder’s Aja Naomi King with a dash of snakeskin pattern pumps. The big question is after ditching HTGAWM mid-season should I watch last night’s finale?

Julianne MooreOne reason I love the Independent Spirit Awards red carpet so much is it is the optimal point of fun and fancy; where dress length can be anything you want. And Julianne Moore’s Christian Dior Couture sparkly mini number ticks all the boxes.

David OyelowoEven the dudes get in on the colorful attire, although David Oyelowo showed at the Oscars it isn’t a onetime thing and while this baby blue suit is a little rumpled in places I am still swooning all over the place.

Emmy RossumWell this just delightful and Emmy Rossum in Oscar de la Renta has me wishing it was a little warmer right now (layers and layers of knits is what I have covered myself in today).

Rinko KikuchiI’m a little mad I didn’t get to this red carpet sooner because look how perfect all of these dresses are?! Another incredible floral beauty with Rinko Kikuchi in Chanel.

Rashida JonesA switch in party but not pattern joy with Rashida Jones at the post Oscars Vanity Fair shindig looking resplendent in Andrew Gn.

Mindy KalingDeviating from the color/pattern theme and Mindy Kaling wearing another incredible creation from Mindy Project costume designer Salvador Perez. Kaling is normally all about the bold and while this has neither color nor print it might be one of the boldest outfits she has worn. Simply stunning.

Oscar 2015 Red Carpet Highlights Part 1 – Color and Sparkle

23 Feb

We’ve been talking about award season for months now and after all that build up the Oscars red carpet did not disappoint (okay some disappointed but woah are there plenty of incredible gowns on offer). Part 1 of our best looks is all about color and sparkle, both of which featured heavily at the Golden Globes and continue their reign here. Head here for Part 2.

Emma StoneEmma Stone combines both color and shimmer in a stunning Elie Saab Couture gown. Stone constantly mixes things up on the red carpet and this is another occasion where opting for something unique has paid off. It might be due to a lack of sleep (I apologize for any gibberish that might follow in this post) but I can’t stop staring at this.

Rosamund PikeAnother risk taker and this award season has unfortunately been more miss than hit for Rosamund Pike; for the big one she pulls out the big guns in Givenchy Couture. Elegant and super sexy combined. No need for distracting jewelry.

Julianne MooreCustom Chanel for Julianne Moore and an ideal winners gown; the floral and sequin detail is exquisite.

Laura DernA futuristic looking Alberta Ferretti metallic frock for Laura Dern, which is just as dramatic as her hair flick. If the aliens come I want our armor to look like this.

Ava DuVernayCrushing it in baby blue Prada with bell sleeves and embroidered detail is Ava DuVernay.

Jennifer Aniston and Justin TherouxNo plunging necklines here, instead Jennifer Aniston wears a beaded champagne color Atelier Versace gown that clings in all the right places. Justin, you look very good too.

Lorelei LinklaterA special red lipstick shout out to Lorelei Linklater doing her teen goth thing in style.

Best of the NAACP Image Awards 2015 Red Carpet

8 Feb

A bumper awards show weekend and we’re going to kick off our red carpet coverage with Friday’s NAACP Image Awards which saw Black-ish sweep the TV comedy categories and it was a good night for Shondaland with wins for both How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal. One of the big Golden Globes trends continues with plenty of red gowns on display and below are TV Ate My Wardrobe’s best looks of the night.

Kerry WashingtonStarting with the ladies in red and Kerry Washington’s Zuhair Murad crimson frock is giving off summer cocktail vibes; this is relaxed fancy.

Taraji P. HensonPicking up Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in No Good Deed is Taraji P Henson wearing Edition by Georges Chakra. This is a smoking scarlet gown and the streak of sequins perfectly shows off her figure.

Hannah SimoneAnother red to add to the collection and New Girl’s Hannah Simone does the whole off the shoulder/mermaid style in Lorena Sarbu with ruffled aplomb.

Yara ShahidiMy favorite look from the NAACP Image Awards comes courtesy of Supporting Actress in a Comedy winner Yara Shahidi; it is the kind of outfit only a teen can get away with at an event like this. Shahidi is having fun with her style by playing with the current menswear trend with the bow tie and blazer pairing it with a Black Fleece dress.

Gugu Mbatha-RawPale yellow Burberry for Gugu Mbatha-Raw works like a charm and the floral embossed detail elevates this pastel creation; it is striking without extra accessories.

Angela BassettAngela Bassett is forever stunning in black and gold art deco print from Xcite Xtreme and this is how you work Wonder Woman-esque bracelets. Digging the sleek bang-less Cleopatra bob.

Selma castThe cast of Selma celebrating their multiple wins and style highlights aplenty including David Oyelowo’s blue three piece suit, Tessa Thompson’s Kenzo pastel pink plunge, off the shoulder Solace London for Carmen Ejogo and an amazing custom Ashi Studio for director Ava DuVernay which makes me reconsider my usual mullet dress feelings.
