That very busy time of year when it is not only New York Fashion Week, but the awards keep on coming and shows are returning/are deep into their filming schedule. It is good for “Behind the Insta-Scenes” as there is plenty of variety this week.
Meanwhile Grant Gustin is also moonlighting over on Supergirl; Gustin and Melissa Benoist do look very good together. I really need to catch up on Supergirl before this episode happens.
Constance Zimmer’s very on point sweater this weekend gets extra points for the Galentine’s tag (and now I’m sad I forgot to include Rachel and Quinn in this post – next year).
NYFW is all over Instagram including many runway shots and this one from The Cut’s Stella Bugbee captures the fluidity and pretty from the Altuzarra show.
For anyone who has seen the excellent John Mulaney Netflix comedy special The Comeback Kid or if you just like dogs wearing coats – this one is for you.
Broad City returns next week (Wednesday, 17 February) and we’ve got our first look at season 3 in this new promo. Plenty of returning faces including Hannibal Buress as Lincoln, Ilana’s mother played by the incredible Susie Essman (I still can’t get over how good this casting is), Kirk Steele himself, Trey (Paul W. Downs) and Ilana’s amazing roommate Jaimé (Arturo Castro).
There’s no sign of Bevers which I’m actually okay with because he only works in the smallest of doses. Cynthia Nixon is also guest starring this season in what looks like a role relating to Hillary Clinton’s appearance that was teased on Instagram a couple of months ago. Some quick observations/costume thoughts from this jam packed promo including how I also mistook the dog hoodies in American Apparel for human ones (my question was who in the hell was small enough to fit in the really small one).
Ilana puts the ear holes to good use and Chris Gethard is back as Ilana’s exasperated boss Derek. Hopefully we will be seeing more of Nicole and her memos this season too.Another wig to add to Ilana’s collection to go with her red wavy number from the season 2 finale therefore satisfying my wig kick until The Americans comes back next month.Taking tips from Diane Lockhart and going for chunky chain accessories does have its drawbacks sometimes.

To tide you over until next week for all things Abbi and Ilana then Interview Magazinehas just the thing for you. Ellen Page interviews the pair and it is clear from the outset that she is a huge fan of the show and she knows her shit about the adventures of Abbi and Ilana. The photo shoot is fun and also reminds me of the “St. Mark’s” episode.They discuss their path to comedy, Amy Poehler and sexual politics. Plus they share some interesting thoughts about the new season and how writing the show has changed over the last three years:
PAGE: “Season 3 is coming soon, thank the Lord. Is there anything that changed from the process of writing the show?
JACOBSON: This season was without a doubt the most difficult to write. When we were writing season 2, season 1 was still airing, and we really didn’t have a break between editing season 1 and writing season 2. So we were really just in it, not getting any feedback and not even getting our own perspective on the show. For season 3, we had a lot of perspective, and it was very scary and hard, and it took us a little longer to get into it and figure out what we wanted to do. But I feel like we have a better hold on the series. And for us to be writing about ourselves, because it’s not us, it’s a very difficult thing to wrap your mind around sometimes.
GLAZER: Our lives are changing, and the characters also have to change. We were more conscious than ever this season that we were writing a show. It’s a third season, and there will probably be more. And figuring out the direction we want the show to go in, how we see the series ending, has clarified things. This was the hardest season to write, existentially. I feel like we were really DTR’ing [defining the relationship] this season, and that was just existentially heavy. I feel like we got over that hump, and it will be easier now that it’s caught up in our consciousness.”
Broad City returns Wednesday, February 17 and we will be discussing the show in more detail when it does. I for one am also very excited to get some new stickers and gifs on the Broad City keyboard.
“My Name is Jonas” has been stuck in my head all week and there is a very obvious reason for this as social media has been awash with a blizzard by a certain name. So yes, plenty of snow pics from this edition of Behind the Insta-Scenes. Plus Sundance, red lipstick (insert emoji here), guests stars, that touted Friends reunion and more.
Snow plus dogs equals all the adorable especially when the dog is also dressed for the occasion. Cush Jumbo’s fur hood/gloves/big scarf continues the theme of all things winter wear this week on TV Ate My Wardrobe.
Diane Kruger attempts a potentially perilous jump in the air snow pic and if I attempted this the likelihood of sticking the landing would be slim. Excellent coats and mittens choice (wouldn’t expect anything less). What we really want to know is who took the photo?
Popcorn selfies that also need the lipstick emoji because Jenny Slate and Zoe Kazan have picked their color well. Can it survive the movie snacks? The true test of a good product.
Plenty of Insta gifts both holiday themed and general behind the scenes delights including many happy memories, magazine covers, newcomers and style inspiration.
I’ve fallen behind on The Mindy Project, but what I’ve heard about the most recent episodes has got me intrigued. And of course there is always the pattern clashing joy from Mindy’s costuming as an added bonus.
Things did not end well for Lady on Game of Thrones, but luckily life does not imitate life and Sophie Turner adopted Zunni when Lady’s part came to an end. Someone seems pretty happy to see Santa.

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2015” costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking; we want to celebrate the work of television’s best costume designers.
Now is the turn of a huge range of shows we have been watching this year from network, cable and streaming with comedy, drama and all those other hard to categorize scripted offerings. There has been so many fantastic individual moments that we have had to split this post into two otherwise the scrolling would be endless.
Here is Part 1 of the standout costuming moments in 2015.
Most On Point Accessorizing
What better way to appease the dragon that has done a runner than wear a necklace bearing a very familiar image and this comes in particularly handy for Daenerys in “The Dance of Dragons” when Drogon makes a very timely entrance. The influence of Daenerys’ heritage has been visible throughout the texture of her costuming which at times has been scaly in appearance. Yunus & Eliza designed this stunning piece (click here for a closer look) and it really is fit for a queen.
The Leather Jacket Award
As with last year there have been a whole slew of leather jacket wearing stunners, but there is one lady who takes wearing this garment to every outfit level and that is Jessica Jones. Not pictured are the very 90s looking jeans that are also glued to her body pretty much all of the time and this signature look makes sense when the show takes a deep dive into her backstory.
Who Rocks a Lot of Polka Dots
Cookie Lyon has gone through a style evolution since she was released from prison going from matching animal prints to high end garments as she has caught up with trends and got accustomed to her wealth. One of my favorites is this Dolce & Gabbana polka dot blouse; perfect for a dramatic exit and a fun take on the tablecloth party trick. Cookie’s always going to eat.
Best Mustache – 1980s Edition
Not only did Oscar Isaac take dancing in dad jeans to Bruce Springsteen to new levels, but he also worked this mustache in ways I did not think possible in Show Me a Hero. The mini-series from David Simon is terrific and devastating and not just for the 80s fashion. And even several months after watching it still makes my heart ache when I think about Oscar Isaac’s performance.
Best Mustache – 1970s Edition
Of all the Mad Men characters who would embrace a new decade with some additional facial hair it really makes sense that it would be Roger Sterling. It could easily be kinda skeezy (and of course Roger has entered this territory on more than one occasion), but there’s also something elder statesmen about it and that’s what he is. And I would happily watch an endless loop of Roger and Peggy hanging out in their now deserted office.
Top Hat Placement and Male Nudity on Cable
Alleviating the awkward of the first time with cute top hat parlor tricks is Bertie on The Knick and it is all around adorable. While this is the most of Michael Angarano that we get to see, cable has embraced male nudity this season on a level we haven’t previously seen with both The Leftovers and The Affair showing far more dudes naked than women this year. Game of Thrones you have some catching up to do.
#LadySuitWatch2015 Shorts Winner
My response to seeing Abbi as Val for the first time is pretty much the same as Ilana’s jaw on the floor expression:
Ladysuits of the shorts variety are classic cabaret attire and I am so here for this Judy Garland/Liza Minnelli style and singing mashup inspiration.
#LadySuitWatch2015 Patterned Shirt Winner
Denise is not only stylish as hell as demonstrated by her movie premiere ladysuit wearing ways, but she is also one of the best things about Aziz Ansari’s excellent Master of None helping make a citizen’s arrest in the stellar “Ladies and Gentleman” and offering up sound dating advice (even if she ends up ignoring it).
The Outwear and Boots Crime Fighting Title
Season 3 of The Bridge (Broen/Bron) lost one of its main stars, but didn’t lose any of its quality introducing a new partner for Saga who turned out to be just as compelling (if not even more so than his predecessor – sorry Martin). Style wise the pair complement each other rather well favoring classic coats and boots for their crime fighting attire; Saga is still all about the olive leather pants and Henrik also tucks his trousers into his boots because who wants those flapping in the wind while running after a suspect.
Best Reason to Invest in a Big Warm Coat
Fortitude is part X-Files like mystery, part exploration of the human condition in an extreme and isolated environment. It is also a very good advert for furry hoods and big coats; yes I even invested in my own.
Red Lipstick Queen
There is plenty to love about Peggy Carter and season 2 is just a couple of weeks away! Agent Carter also gets added to the How TV Ate My Wardrobe list in the makeup department as I invested in Peggy’s Besame 1946 lipstick and there is also the bonus of beautiful packaging along with fantastic red lips.
Denim Dream
1981 was a great year for denim and there is a residual 70s influence on fashion in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp with high waisted flares and dungaree delights. Also pairing anything with short shorts is fair game.
Best Future April Ludgate
2015 saw the end of Parks and Recreationprompting plenty of finale tears. This also means saying goodbye to one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s biggest style influences and I am happy to report that future April Ludgate is still very much in our sartorial good graces.
What to Wear on Your European Vacation
Traveling across Europe with Hannibal Lecter means packing your finest threads and Bedelia is up for that challenge with this blue 1940s spy looking ensemble even if this is the opposite of staying incognito.

Yes I am still highly coveting Gretchen’s round opal yellow Wayfarer sunglasses for the second year in a row.
Most On Point Accessorizing Part 2
Gina is not just the TV Ate My Wardrobe Sweater Queen (her turtleneck game has been strong all season), but she’s also the reason why I yell “Wolfie” at the screen whenever any of the direwolves pop up on Game of Thrones. So when Gina appeared on screen in the episode “Beach House,” which kicked off the new year for Brooklyn Nine-Nine in this hat/scarf/glove combo it also caused me to yell “Wolfie” on this occasion too.
Festive Relationship Goals
Looking is almost over (*sob*) and before its one final outing in the form of a TV movie next year, let us bask in Eddie’s Santa outfit and how Agustín went from loathsome narcissist to the dude (and ship) I was heavily invested in by the end of season 2. Good character development, show.
December is here and a few things are getting kicked up a notch 1) end of year awards, 2) film awards, 3) best of lists and 4) Christmas shopping (okay this last one isn’t all that blog related). Full on awards red carpet season doesn’t start until the new year and this is more of a pre-game kind of showcase as these events don’t call on everyone to be in their fanciest fancy pants. It is also a good time to get some festive party inspiration; I am a fan of the ‘if in doubt where something sparkly’ approach at this time of year.
Getting the December ball rolling is the 25th Gotham Independent Film Awards last night (okay so that was technically still November) hosted in New York City. Spotlight took home two awards for best feature and best screenplay, but it wasn’t just film receiving accolades as Mr Robot (which I still need to watch) won the longform breakthrough series award beating out Jane the Virgin, Transparent, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and UnREAL. Let’s see who impressed us on the red carpet.
Julianne Moore is serving up the perfect amount of gold sequin and smoky eyes for all things end of year events and while a Saint Laurent frock is way beyond my budget this is definitely the kind of look I will be going for. Plus it has the floaty dress benefit of being able to tuck into any amazing party snacks on offer; in my case this means anything with cheese, jalapeno poppers, sausage rolls and all the mince pies.
#LadySuitWatch2015! Dascha Polanco goes for gold in this white ensemble with glitzy flourishes and it works like a charm. Outfits like this require a steady hand or a ban of any dark liquids coming within the vicinity of it.
Same with Ilana Glazer’s spectacular double-breasted jacket dress because I would end up like her character Ilana when she wore something similar on Broad City. Abbi’s dress is simple and chic; the only thing I would switch up is their shoes with each other and red lipstick for both.
Eagle-eyed readers will recognize this dress as the same Cynthia Rowley off the shoulder floral frock that Alex Morgan wore to the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, but Teyonah Parris also looks stunning in it and I’ve never had a problem with repeats. I’m not too sure about the cut out Marchesa booties with this dress; however they make a change from the strappy sandal approach.
A knockout monochrome gown for Laura Prepon and while I am generally all about reds and berry lip color for this season the coral lipstick is a really great choice here.
And on the mini-frock end of the scale is Emmy Rossum wearing a black and brown jacquard Simone Rocha affair, which wouldn’t look out of place as wallpaper in Benedict Cumberbatch’s 221b Baker Street Sherlock home. This doesn’t necessarily sound like a good thing, but I can assure you it is. Plus those all important pockets.
Glenn Close forever slaying and delivering caped arrival excellence.
Appearing just as suave as their Mad Men characters, but with far less furs, facial hair and daughter drama are John Slattery and Talia Balsam.
Mark Ruffalo’s doing the run of the mill black suit dude wear, but it is his wife Sunrise Coigney who really makes an impact in an unusual and striking burnt orange dress with sheer sleeves I can get on board with.
After last week’s pants and ladysuits affair we are returning to a dress filled “Out of the Box” with plenty of bold color, pattern (SO MANY STRIPES) and statement frocks. The pitter patter of awards campaigning is upon us plus premieres and other end of year events are bringing these sartorial treats.
Happy Jessica Jones Day! And Krysten Ritter looks phenomenal at the New York premiere in ethereal Zuhair Murad Resort 2016 demonstrating the ideal amount of sheer. I am very excited to start this new Netflix series and I’m sure I will have some thoughts on here in the next week or so (depending on how quickly I burn through it).
Another floaty white ensemble delight from Lizzy Caplan in Thakoon at the Night Before premiere, which manages to capture festive cheer in a subtle fashion. Plus another lesson in sheer that doesn’t make me sadness sigh.
The Academy events are here and at the 7th annual Governors Awards on Saturday, Teyonah Parris wore this stripe Pedram Couture beauty. Black and metallic silver are perfect for this time of year and Parris is always on top formon the red carpet.
Brie Larson keeps it super simple in Calvin Klein and stands out in doing so. I cannot wait to see much more of her on the red carpet this award season. Still very much feeling her reaction to Cate Blanchett in a jumpsuit.
Another flawless block color dress and Ava DuVernay’s blue peplum Elvira Jude is striking, as are the gold pumps which are peeking out the bottom.
Emily Blunt is a TV Ate My Wardrobe fave both on and off screen; she constantly makes interesting choices including this shimmery Marc Jacobs resort frock. Loving the leather collar.
Kerry Washington adds to the stripe joy in a matching Saloni top and skirt with thankfully not quite matchy matchy Nicholas Kirkwood chevron pumps at the inaugural WWD/Variety Stylemakers event. The work of Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo was recognized with Washington presenting her with the award and after ditching Scandal this season, I just watched the mid-season finale and those costumes really are everything. This one had it all from the fanciest of frocks to incredible coats and an all important wine cardigan, plus the episode was also really great.
Now this is pretty much a dream dress and Kirsten Dunst has been appearing a loton hererecently; I think this Gucci chevron-striped frock might be my favorite as it has a very 70s feel to it without looking like she has just come straight from the set of Fargo.
Pretty Much the Dream Dress Part 2 with Elizabeth Banks in a colorful sequin stripe Dolce & Gabbana number at the LA Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 premiere and this has festive party written all over it.
Double Elizabeth Banks this week as I couldn’t resist this Giulietta fun play on the LBD at the VH1 Big in 2015 with Entertainment Weekly Awards.
And now a twist on a white sporty style mini dress from Aubrey Plaza paired with stacked strappy heels giving this an overall retro feel.
I just realized that season 3 of Broad City isn’t too far away (okay slightly further away than expected as yesterday it was announced its return will be February 17 instead of the usual January window) and I definitely don’t need an excuse to post a photo of these amazing ladies.
Attending the Worldwide Orphans Gala (of which Amy Poehler has served as an Ambassador of the Arts since 2013) they struck the balance between casual and fancy with Ilana’s matching crop top and skirt combo working like a charm and I am so here for Abbi’s floral wrap. Amy’s sparkly skirt is also super festive appropriate and this outfit also reminds me of how much I love/agree with Rachel Syme’s recent tights essay (although I would’ve gone with a different color pump).
There are a couple more months before Abbi and Ilana return for season 3 of Broad City, but thankfully they have been producing Hack Into Broad Cityvideos and this was a vital part of their original web series. The newest installment is Halloween themed and includes a chat about how insane it is to wear heels in the city, Halloween or not; as someone who can’t make it through an evening in a pair I am enthusiastically nodding along to this point.
The costume reveal is pure joy and I can’t think of anything more perfect than what they have both chosen. I am only sad that this isn’t a full length Halloween episode because I love Halloween episodes (see here, here, here and here).
Due to shooting schedules there are some shows that are summer ones even if they air in winter like Broad City and Girls. This is mostly fine and all, but it does mean we miss out on certain fun holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even Valentine’s Day. Show me a holiday themed episode and I will enjoy whatever tenuously related or cheesy shenanigans that take place.
Thankfully Hack Into Broad City has got us covered on this front.
And if I was dressing up as something Broad City related for Halloween I think my two of my options would be:
Plenty more returning shows this week offering up behind the scenes treats on TV Instagram. Plus old cast mates hanging out together, Empire style sneak peeks and what some of the stars of The Americans have been up to during its hiatus.
Except when secret projects are being filmed featuring a song by another one of their Ugly Betty co-stars. Whatever Michael Urie and Becki Newton have planned count me in.
Counting down to You’re the Worst, amazing red lipstick, flashbacks to The X-Files and more Mindy costuming treats as we round up the best of TV Instagram.
Even on a Wednesday it is perfectly acceptable to sing Sunday Funday when new episodes of You’re the Worst are this close. Loving Aya Cash’s shorter ‘do.
Confession – I have been working away and travelling all week so I have not seen the latest Masters of Sex, but I can definitely say how much I love Betty’s ensemble and Helen’s red lipstick. They are all giving great face.
If you have this many people in an elevator at an event (I suspect famous or not) then the obligatory group selfie is going to happen (see the upfronts). When Team Taylor is in attendance it is definitely going to be a thing and what I really like about this one is that it doesn’t look like a fourth or fifth attempt to perfection; it’s a little blurry and everyone is doing their own posing. Mindy’s blouse closet is awash with signature bold color and print; so pleased Mindy Project costume designer Salvador Perez has been nominated for an Emmy this year.
Speaking of Broad City and here is a good gift to get anyone who is currently into the coloring trend. Even if they are not into it then you should still get this for someone.
