Friday Night Lights cast hangouts get me every single time. This is no exception.

Now for NYFW and at Opening Ceremony this is a whole lot of comic actors to adore, all wearing fabulous clothes.

More Alia Shawkat and the Rachel Antonoff Betty and Veronica collection was showcased in a super fun and imaginative way, with Shawkat being one of the models.

So many heart eyes at Phoebe Robinson in Tracy Reese at NYFW and I am really looking forward to reading You Can’t Touch My Hair, which is out next month.

All eyes are on Belfast to see which Game of Thrones cast members are heading to Northern Ireland for season 7 and while this bar hang is not a guarantee that Sansa and Arya will reunite any time soon, I can but dream. I am also here for Maisie William’s double drink choice of a cocktail and what looks like a hot beverage.

The month of everything happening continues with the Toronto Film Festival and Hidden Figures is on my most anticipated list (see also La La LandManchester by the SeaColossal and Jackie). Glen Powell is pretty much the main reason I stuck with Scream Queens and he’s got the best co-star hangouts at TIFF.

Top notch prom posing skills.

So happy that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend won a couple of Emmys over the weekend. Expect a lot more Emmy Insta next week.

I’m still confident in saying that BrainDead was my favorite show of the summer and while I am sad it is probably done, the finale kept up the absurd/fun/weird/sexy/amazing costume levels.

Is Liv getting a zombie dog? This is a serious cutie.

Masters of Sex returned this week with a promising start to the season after last year’s messiness. Niecy Nash was a welcome presence and she won’t put up with Bill’s self-pity.

Time for the weekly installment of I heart the You’re the Worst team; at work on a Saturday.

And then followed by spending the evening together.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

22 Jun

Between Orange is the New Black and “The Battle of the Bastards” there was a lot going on this week on TV and this edition of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” has got you covered on both. Plus we’ve got shows that are currently in productions, ones that have just finished and lots of other fun stuff is on the Instagram highlights menu.

It’s all fun and games in Maureen when things aren’t getting set on fire/people aren’t being stabbed.

A “How to Get Blood out of Your Beard” tutorial is probably needed for the Game of Thrones guys and it is good to see all is crazy in love when the camera stops rolling.

And now for a “Who Wore it Better?” Battle of the Bastards edition (Part 2).

I have a lot of feelings about this new season of Orange is the New Black and I don’t want to say too much for those who have not finished yet, but I am very happy the OITNB cast have been posting photos like the one above. Need this moment of happiness.

And adorable ones like this, which is also from the New York premiere.

Adding to the feelings scale is the Orphan Black season 4 finale and thanks for the flowers Tatiana!

Now for shows currently in production and this bts shot of Justin Theroux from season 3 of The Leftovers. As Theroux points out; no handcuffs (or shirt) necessary.

After recently marathoning my way through the first two seasons of iZombie I’ve still got that post-watch emptiness (see also OITNB) so even though there isn’t a season 3 premiere date yet, it is good to see some of the cast back on iZombie duty.

There are lots of reasons to be excited about this new season of You’re the Worst and one of them is this amazing casting news.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BG5HHynGtsh/?taken-by=mewins&hl=en

On BrainDead Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Tveit danced together. It was magical. As is this prom style pic.

While a lot of the FNL cast were in Austin for the ATX Television Festival; Aimee Teegarden, Taylor Kitsch, Zach Gilford and Minka Kelly were taking part in the Spartan Race. Another reunion I can get behind. Even with Kitsch’s mustache.

This is from a couple of weeks ago (when I covered the outfits from this event), but somehow I missed it and I’m making up for that now.

Joshua Jackson and Kiernan Shipka doing their best January Jones pose might be my new favorite thing.

The way to get two entries is to quote from Overboard. Always an instant YES in my book/blog.

A day earlier than the usual Behind the Insta-Scenes posting time and that’s because it has been jam packed with the ATX Television Festival in Austin delivering on the TV reunion front. Plus the Tony Awards and other great TV related hangouts.

In more excellent TV reunion photos with the ladies from Ugly Betty and one boozy hangout dream scenario; Vanessa Williams AND Judith Light.

Posing up a storm and the UnREAL cast continues to crush all things on Instagram (also this week’s episode is SO great).

Danai Gurira was one of our Tony Awards red carpet faves and not only is she delivering on the excellent Insta multi group shots, but she’s also given us a getting ready photo diary over at Vogue.

In non-shocking news to regular readers, but I adore this selfie. And everything about this friendship. Michelle Williams’ lipstick looks even better in close up.

More in the Tony selfie stream and Lucy Liu was one of the yellow frock delights from the night.

Lupita gifts us with a Tonys dress and accessories still life; such exquisite and detailed work.

Glenn Close looks amazing and in a ‘stars they’re just like us’ moment she’s seen her clutching heels rather than wearing them after a big event (I normally last 2 hours, maybe 3 if/when the booze kicks in).

Busy Philipps has the Jane Eyre Olympia Le-Tan book cover clutch and this Bell Jar one (as mentioned in this Tonys post) is my ultimate clutch wish list item.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

30 Sep

A whole lot returning shows and soon to be returning shows as the new fall season is here. Which means plenty of social media engagement and this is one bumper “Behind the Insta-Scenes.”

Breaking theme early and let’s start with the photo I can’t even deal with; dudes from Friday Night Lights and an adorable baby.

Empire returned last week and cast viewing parties for the premiere were all the rage.

Taraji P Henson caught the more chaotic side.

And new cast member Marisa Tomei was joined by a few famous friends (and Empire co-creator Lee Daniels).

The HUGE Empire viewing numbers are a good indicator of hype matching the amount of people watching and Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez posted this selfie from the Emmys to celebrate its return.

More Jane and this time goofing around with snacks. Or recreating that iconic John Locke Lost moment.

Emilia Clarke finally her hands on a Game of Thrones Emmy. Or rather someone’s hand. And that’s what holds her hair in under all of Daenerys’ locks.

Watch the ATX Television Festival Dawson’s Creek Pilot Script Reading

7 Jul

The fourth ATX Television Festival took place last month in Austin, Texas and my Twitter timeline was wall to wall ATX, which is a great way to vicariously enjoy the festivities but sadly lacks the real life interactions, panels, cocktails, karaoke and barbecue. Yes there are no queues in the scorching heat and yet there are still high levels of FOMO.

[Source]

Thankfully on the ATX YouTube channel they have been releasing various full panel videos and yesterday they went ahead and uploaded the one I have been waiting for; the Dawson’s Creek pilot script reading. The all-star cast includes Tim Riggins aficionado Mae Whitman as Dawson – oh yeah they gender flipped some of the roles – Dawson’s alumni Kerr Smith as Jen (which is pretty much the most perfect thing and he is working the silver fox thing) and Grandma Saracen herself Louanne Stephens as Grams.

It has been a while since I last saw the Dawson’s Creek pilot but it feels pretty much burned into my brain from the VHS recording I watched on repeat and after recently finishing Felicity, a Dawson’s Creek rewatch is a big temptation (plus inexplicably I have somehow never seen the final episode).

For now there is this ATX version. Enjoy!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 Apr

The sun is shining and the influx of summer looking prints and hemline lengths at the MTV Movie Awards has me both fearing and embracing the ditching of tights. Plus the best sartorial moments of the week from other premieres and events.

Amy SchumerIt has been a big week for Amy Schumer with hosting the MTV Movie Awards, receiving a Peabody and being part of Time’s 100 Most Influential People (Tilda Swinton wrote this spectacular ode to her). Inside Amy Schumer returns next week and we have already been gifted with this. To top it off she looks really great in this monochrome Balmain mini frock, which is giving me all the Megan Draper feels.

Holland RodenShort hemlines were on trend as Holland Roden demonstrates in another take on black and white in this super funky Caterina Gatta dress. And this ensemble also wouldn’t look out of place on Mad Men this season. Cute blue pumps too (although it is a shame they blend into the carpet).

Anna CampAnother very fun dress and Anna Camp’s Peter Pilotto is a textured/pattern joy. Not entirely sure about chunky straps on the Stuart Weitzman sandals, but this is the kind of outfit that would also work at Coachella (without looking too Coachella).

Michael B JordanNow for a pair of dapper FNL boys and one thing I am really excited about when it comes to the new Fantastic Four is Michael B. Jordan on the red carpet and he is already killing it in plaid Vivienne Westwood.

Zach GilfordAll the Matt Saracen swoons are occurring right now and Zach Gilford’s got the whole cute smile thing down. Now to find him a decent TV project.

Ellie KemperMoving on to the Lilly Pulitzer for Target event with Ellie Kemper rocking a bob with bangs and an ideal dress for the warmer weather. This looks like an ideal Jane the Virgin outfit and I can see this collection popping up on this show (it is Jane’s favorite store after all).

Rose ByrneRose Byrne opts for a slightly longer cut at the Adult Beginners premiere in velvet (!) Christopher Kane and the 70s influence here is strong (and I love).

Elizabeth OlsenGoing for chic simplicity at the Avengers: Age of Ultron premiere and slaying it in Galvan is Elizabeth Olsen (I have to concentrate extra hard so I don’t end up typing a mashup of Peggy Olson/Elisabeth Moss). The white tee element is accentuated by the gold necklace and combined with midnight blue makes this a winning look.

Music Monday: A Farewell to Breaking Bad

30 Sep

“Breathe Me” by Sia, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “Before the Devil Knows Your Dead” by Delta Spirit are three songs that accompanied the final moments of season finales that I hold in high regard.* The last episode can be controversial and divisive (see Lost and The Sopranos), all round hated (the Dexter swansong) or generally satisfying (Friday Night Lights30 Rock). As Julie Hammerle points out in her excellent Breaking Bad review the last outing is rarely the best episode of the show and Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan even stated that the penultimate penultimate episode “Ozymandias” is the best hour of this show.

Breaking Bad last episodesFor me Breaking Bad falls into the generally satisfying category and yes the story was wrapped up neatly, but it felt fitting to what we have been watching; a show that has been chaotic and reckless, but has always had a strong structure much like the crystal meth that Walt has been making.

*Those shows are Six Feet Under, The Sopranos and Friday Night Lights

The closing song choice as Walt lays down to die surrounded by meth equipment similar to what allowed to be a king is Badfinger’s “Baby Blue” a song which starts with the line “I guess I got what I deserved.” While this notion might be in contention as Walt got to die pretty much on his terms and as he told Hank he would die before he was convicted – from a gunshot and not the cancer as he predicted. The song title is also a not so subtle nod to the color of the meth that made Walt so famous and as he lays dying in a lab it is pretty fitting.

What a final song choice needs as we witness the last few minutes of a character, that we have not only watched but discussed for hours is some sort of finality and while something like The Sopranos refused to give that with its closing scene (a scene which I love) the end of Breaking Bad is not ambiguous in any way. Walt’s story is over and while characters like Jesse will be haunted by what has happened in the unseen hours of the show (fanfic time!) our protagonists tale is over. This neatness is not the ending that all will find satisfying but on this occasion I’m more than happy with the end result.

So long baby blue.

Happy TV New Year and Turning Another Year Older

3 Sep

September feels like the start of a new year and for TV it is as the fall season is about to begin. September is the month that I associate with new beginnings – it was always when the academic year started and even though my post-grad finished several years ago I’m still very much in that mindset. Do you know how much I want to go out and get new stationary even though I don’t need it?! Fashion is another industry that holds this month in high regard as the September issue of magazines marks the biggest publication of the year (yes they hit newsstands in August, but there’s no mention of that summer month in the title)  and New York Fashion Week kicks off on Thursday.

The photos dotted throughout are the characters who I often ask “What Would ______ Do?” This selection of inspiring female characters will provide life lessons, fix things, teach me how to wear white without spilling, organize Galentine’s Day, support me with my cheese habit and show me how to wear ’90s fashion all over again.

Leslie Knope

There’s a personal reason why September always feels like the perfect time to reassess and look to the new as it also happens to be when my birthday is (yeah I’m making this all about me). It’s time to finally accept that I am no longer a twentysomething and that I am too old to be a Millennial and too young to be Gen X; where are all the think pieces about the generation in the middle and how we ruined everything? I want my Time magazine cover.

[Source]

While I’m experiencing the standard apprehension about where I am and what I am doing I also wanted to take the moment to write this perhaps overly emotive post (hey it’s the internet what else am I meant to do?) to see that I am actually doing fine.

Tami Taylor and wine[Source]

TV Ate My Wardrobe has been in existence in this form for almost 5 months and when I started it I had some idea of what I wanted it to be – a place to talk about TV, costuming and fashion. There are so many incredible outlets that feature terrific writing about TV and it’s such a competitive market it can be tough to break through and carve a corner of one’s own. While I still have far to go before I can hail this venture a success, it’s been a personal triumph as my confidence has grown. Of course there are days when I think it’s all pointless but then a new idea will strike and it all seems worth it again. Or I’ll find out that one of my Scandal costuming picks is actually something that has been used in the forthcoming season (*spoiler* it’s the white Burberry trench).

MSCL ep7 The Smile

A lot of thanks has to be given to the many new friends I have made in the TV and writing community on Twitter and for the opportunities this has given me. Without This Was TV I wouldn’t be able to relive my sometimes embarrassing teen years while talking about My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks. This is soon to include the sometimes awkward university years as Julie Hammerle and I will be moving onto Felicity later this month. It turns out conversation pieces are a lot of fun and here I will be continuing the Summer Rewind project (even if it’s pretty much autumn) with Kerensa Cadenas and we will be joined by Julie to talk all things Scandal before the new season begins.

Olivia PopeWarning this is where I get even more sentimental as I want to say thanks to everyone who has been reading; whether it is one article or if you visit on a regular basis it has made this experience more worthwhile. There is one person who encourages me on a daily basis even when I starting doubting the words I write and they get a huge thank you and this support means everything.

For the final word I will leave you with Nick Miller and I can’t wait to start writing about New Girl again when the new season returns. Here he is with a notion that I am going to try and listen to as I turn another year older.

Music Monday: Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose

26 Aug

The choice of song for today is inspired by a long weekend away and the explosion of articles (no pun intended) about a certain award show last night. For the past few days I have had limited access to the internet and coming back online when there are endless think pieces and discussions about a performance from the night before can be overwhelming. Throw in a super tense episode of Breaking Bad and I’m crying out for a song that is relaxing and uplifting (I just realized how cheesy that sounds).

Anyway, I decided to go for an old favorite and that’s Explosions in the Sky; a band who provided many tracks for the Friday Night Lights soundtrack (both TV and film).  The song is “First Breath After Coma” and is the musical equivalent of a Coach Taylor speech or a trip to Tami Taylor’s office for some much needed guidance.
