Best of the 2018 Oscars Red Carpet: Metallics and Neutrals

5 Mar

Welcome! To the second part of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Oscar coverage. This post has a whole lot of sparkle, white frocks, ladysuit tails and more.

For Part 1 head here.Wakanda Forever! Lupita Nyong’o wore a lot of armor inspired looks during the Black Panther press tour and this gold sequin Atelier Versace is serving up red carpet warrior to new levels. Danai Gurira wears soft blush Gabriela Hearst with a fierce edge thanks to the silver detail on her shaved head. Adding a touch of African heritage with a scarf is Winston Duke, wearing a fabulous Etro ensemble.

I really hope Black Panther will get honored at the 91st Academy Awards.A dress that shimmers and shimmies is the dream; Gal Gadot has the perfect Givenchy couture gown.I was thrilled to see Gina Rodriguez presenting and she had the gown to match in Zuhair Murad.Sally Hawkins does whimsical delight in The Shape ff Water and IRL in a sequin Armani Prive gown.More cape and ladysuit excellence from Sarah Broom and Dee Rees with Rees going all in wearing tales. I am also in awe of her shoes. Keeping it classic in white Calvin Klein by Appointment. Laura Dern now gets the great honor of once again being my lock screen image as I couldn’t not make the Dern/Gerwig pairing anything but that. Now for something completely different with a dash of leather daddy on the red carpet.

Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon took the cold shoulder trend in an unexpected direction in a cropped Jeremy Scott for Moschino jacket, leather harness and patent leather bow-tie.I saw Lady Bird for a second time yesterday and Beanie Feldstein steals every scene she is in. And she looks wonderful in ombré Sachin and Babi. The detail looks like roots from a magical tree. Perfect movie prom frock. There were a number of stand out white frocks yesterday, including Janet Mock in stunning caped Christian Siriano. Team Get Out looked pretty damn good and Lakeith Stanfield was my favorite guy in blue wearing Ermenegildo Zegna Couture.Jane Fonda mentioned that the Oscar set was reminiscent of Barbarella, she’s also serving so much sci-fi shoulders in custom Balmain. Oscar Isaac recently discussed the reasons why he decided to marry long-time girlfriend Elvira Lind and the pair look cool af at the Academy Awards. Her dress has a whole Scandinavian vibe and he looks totally fine with his wife being taller than him in heels. Last year Mahershala Ali was one of the best dressed award season contenders. And he continues this streak. It is like he invented the velvet jacket in Berluti.Couple faves Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani go super classic formal; Kumail ditches the pattern for the Bond look in Ermenegildo Zegna and Emily is a tulle queen in J. Mendel. The rest of the party pictures will be up on here later in the week, but I couldn’t not include Emily’s incredible change from sweet to caped snake charmer. It would probably be much easier to go around than climb over the seats, but I’m honestly a bit impressed that Jennifer Lawrence manages this in a fancy Dior gown I actually like AND with a glass of wine in her hand. No falling over this time. And for that she gets the final picture of this post.

Best of 2017 – Out of the Box: Look of the Week (Part 1)

22 Dec

Welcome to the TV Ate My Wardrobe Best of 2017 coverage! As with”Out of the Box” highlights from previous years everything that features here has already appeared in “Look of the Week.”

There have been a lot of amazing magazine covers this year featured on “Out of the Box.” The first part of this 2017 rundown is dedicated to these striking images. Twelve covers from twelve different magazines. Ruth Negga was a constant fixture this year on “Out of the Box,” particularly during award season. Another Magazine delivered the first stunning issue of the year back in February. Ten months later and it is still on my coffee table. Pride of place. Mahershala Ali was another star of award season, so when GQ unveiled this cover in June it was met with much joy. Considering how grey and miserable it is right now, it is also the boost December needs.Vanity Fair celebrates Serena Williams and motherhood in a beautifully stripped down manner. A nod to Demi Moore’s VF cover from fifteen years ago, while being completely about Serena.
The heritage print revival of 2017 has been one of my fashion highlights. Lena Headey’s walk through the highlands for The Edit was just the way to showcase this sartorial spin. I have strong positive feelings about Kirsten Dunst and polka dots. The two combined on this Nylon cover is the dream. Plus this profile is by glass brick aficionado and one of my culture writer faves, Molly Lambert. Another ‘still on the coffee table’ issue. Best use of millennial pink goes to The Hollywood Reporter with their profile of multi-hyphenate Donald Glover.Everything about Sterling K. Brown’s Emmy win makes me happy. Including Variety’s celebration of this. And Brown’s fabulous socks. Usually the clothes worn on covers cost at least a few months rent, not so with Samira Wiley’s Stylist shot. Here she wears Urban Outfitters and Uniqlo in the most autumnal colors. This is another magazine that is still on my coffee table. Sometimes all you need to make you stop and stare at a magazine cover is a simple beauty shot. The November issue of Allure does just this; Kerry Washington looks like is staring into your soul. What a fun, striking cover from Entertainment Weekly featuring Constance Wu and Henry Golding. And I am already super excited to see Crazy Rich Asians. The costuming is extravagant, plus that velvet suit is bang on trend. The last couple of months has been dominated by Lady Bird chat, the woman of the hour Greta Gerwig deservedly getting a lot of attention. This black and white Bust cover is giving me a lot of Frances Ha feelings. My favorite kind. This is how to do a debut issue. New British Vogue Editor-In-Chief, Edward Enniful made a huge splash with a striking cover starring Model of the Year, Adwoa Aboah. Evoking classic ’80s cover shots without feeling derivative.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Jun

The theme of this week’s “Out of the Box” is fun with a whole lot of whimsical patterns across various public appearances. The pre-Emmy nomination campaigning is now on the quieter side, but there is still plenty going on including several premieres and more magazine delights on the back of last week’s bumper rundown.

In exciting news, I have a piece over at Elle about Wonder Woman, glasses and makeover montages in movies. Check that out here.Preacher returns Sunday (June 25) and I’m really excited to have Ruth Negga as Tulip back on TV. Tulip was one of the best dressed new characters of 2016 and as any regular reader will be aware, Ruth Negga crushed it on the most recent film awards circuit.

This pattern continues at the Preacher premiere with Negga in a tricky Chanel feathered, beaded and tulle frock; she’s making this whole fashion thing look so easy.In more magical fashion unicorn news; the new Spider-Man promo tour continues and at the Barcelona photocall Zendaya looks effortlessly cool in a Delpozo ensemble that has a lot going on.

Flamingos are super prevalent right now as everyone wants to put a bird on it; from clothes to every single piece of summer homeware I’ve seen recently and yet this top looks like none of the items I have seen. Also those pants would look terrible on me, but I want them.

Zendaya is great and if you haven’t read her Vogue cover story yet then I would definitely recommend. The Big Sick is on my most anticipated summer movie list and at the New York premiere Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon look fabulous while promoting the film they wrote together. Emily gives great lipstick and pattern, which are pretty much two of my favorite things.Keeping with the lipstick/pattern theme is Kirsten Dunst in Gucci at the Build Series discussion and I have been style crushing on Dunst since I was a teen. Dunst has been hitting all the style notes throughout The Beguiled press tour from Cannes ball gowns to airport attire. Sofia Coppola looks classic and also pajama adjacent in those pants, which I am definitely here for.

Also in Sofia Coppola news here are several pieces that I have been reading this week including Soraya Roberts doing a deep dive on the themes of Coppola’s work, Ira Madison III taking on the controversy of Coppola removing Hallie, the slave character from The Beguiled, Inkoo Kang discussing Coppola’s problematic portrayal (and erasure) of racial elements in films such as Lost in Translation and The Bling Ring and Kristen Yoonsoo Kim’s interview with Coppola.Bonus Kirsten Dunst does fabulous casual style and even though I have already given these very ’70s jeans a shout out, they deserve another.

One more thing from The Beguiled press tour with a bonus Jesse Plemons mention on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Also Fargo season 2 really is the best TV Fargo. In amazing cover news; Mahershala Ali dominated my Twitter feed on Tuesday when GQ released these stunning images and his smile is pure delight. As is the rest of the photoshoot (yes I want this AMI Alexandre Mattiussi sweatshirt).

And the piece that accompanies the super summery fashion editorial is both thoughtful and thought provoking. It is an incredible profile by Carvell Wallace that reflects on a range of topics including the current political climate:

“I think African-Americans have a very convoluted relationship with patriotism. The fact is, we essentially were the abused child. We still love the parent, but you can’t overlook the fact that we have a very convoluted relationship with the parent. I absolutely love this country, but like so many people have some real questions and concerns about how things have gone down over the years and where we’re at. And that’s from a place of love, because I want the country to be what it says it is on paper.”

It is an in-depth interview covering Ali’s childhood, religion, his career and fame. It is one of the best profiles of the year and Carvell Wallace makes this so much more than your bog standard actor puff piece.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 Mar

This week has seen the spotlight get turned on the amazing stylists who get actors red carpet ready with the annual Hollywood Reporter Top 25. We covered the issue here, but we’ve got party highlights and some treats from the number 1 name on that list throughout this post.

Plus SXSW delivers on the exact kind of outfits I am looking to now that spring is finally here (sorry for those who had snow this week). There’s also SNL musical performances and great late night outfits to enjoy. At the Hollywood Reporter Power Stylist dinner Sarah Paulson shows just why Karla Welch is a sartorial force to be reckoned with as she makes this peach Prada embellished frock look so much more low maintenance than it is. Love the Chinese style collar and strong brow.

Posing with the man of the hour – also wearing Prada – and showing that he’s also got the post-awards fashion sorted is Mahershala Ali. Such a strong shirt pattern choice and he’s making a statement that he’s fabulous.  Karla Welch is also good at dressing herself (which is a weird sentence to write) in this simple and summery long Rosie Assoulin gown. Also points for sensible flats for both Welch and Busy Philipps; who I am loving in all white. This night also provided A+ Busy Instagram stories with a guest appearance from Sarah Paulson who playfully mimicked Busy’s penchant for saying ‘guys.’In the way Sundance is to knits and coats, SXSW delivers on prints and super cute summer frocks. Jenny Slate is a SXSW regular and always delivers on the exact kind of outfits I would also want to wear (aside from the shoes his time). Bonus pocket points too! A busy SXSW for Noël Wells with premieres for Mr. Roosevelt and Infinity Baby. The above is at the latter and the matching star blast separates paired with black boots gives this look an edge. I really like Wells in season 1 of Master of None and I’m looking forward to seeing both of these projects, but especially Mr. Roosevelt as Wells writes, directs and stars in it.More Karla Welch picks showing just how versatile she is as a stylist as it isn’t all just award season and at the American Gods panel Emily Browning looks incredible in super floral Miu Miu and chunky Prada heels.

My intrigue levels for American Gods are set to high and while I don’t know the source material, the cast and creative team sell it to me alone. Plus this new trailer is giving me a whole lot of costume design thoughts already. At the Win it All premiere Stephanie Beatriz gives great wide-leg pants in stunning cobalt blue paired with a funky strapless top. I just bought some wide-leg pants and while I have no idea what shoes I’m gonna wear them with seeing Beatriz in this trend with this styling is giving me some ideas. Also going baggy is Lorde doing a full oversized suit thing at the Elvis Duran Z100 morning show and to keep with this week’s stylist theme she is another Karla Welch client.

Lorde performed on SNL and “Green Light” has been on repeat since it got released. More high-waisted/wide-leg and the backless sparkly top is everything.

Keri Russell loves a bit of leather for late night and much like myself she loves a bit of Grease 2 (it is the better movie, don’t @ me).

[Source]

For Seth Meyers she went all black with a splash of leopard print with her choice of Louboutins. And because I love all things celebrity real estate this sneak peek at her house (with bonus Matthew Rhys and baby in the background) is ticking those boxes. Makeup artist Tina Turnbow also gave a close up look of her work and I love a smoky eye.

There are two clips from the Seth Meyers interview; one is about the much talked about Matthew Rhys episode of Girls and this is the one that you can watch on a whole lot of entertainment/style websites. So we’ve opted for the second clip in which Keri Russell talks about the time she met Matthew Rhys ten years before The Americans and forgot about it until he reminded her.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Mar

Award season has come to a close and every year it seems to get longer and longer. But I’m okay with that as it gives us plenty to talk about at TV Ate My Wardrobe. Before you know it there will be Emmy roundtable discussions occurring.

First we have the best of the post-Oscars looks from the Vanity Fair party including several switched outfits from the main show so they can party without worrying about anyone stepping on their train. There are also a couple of FX premieres and a flaming hot ad campaign to keep us busy. viola-davisSwitching from the stunning red Armani gown for a fantastic Brandon Maxwell white ladysuit and Stella McCartney platform shoes, which are probably way more comfy than stacked heels. Love this entire look and Viola Davis crushed both her sartorial choices. The Oscar also looks pretty great.emma-stoneI liked, but didn’t love Emma Stone’s gold embroidered Givenchy Art Deco adjacent gown for the main ceremony, which is why I didn’t include it in my gown rundown. But it is a very different story for this second Givenchy ensemble and this slip/blazer combo is giving me so many mid-90s feelings. This outfit is far from fancy enough for the main event and yet it is ideal for celebrating the big win without worrying about delicate beading of her first gown.

This is something I’ve spoken about in previous post-awards discussion as I love a good behind the scenes getting ready diary and Emma Stone did this one for Vogue with her makeup artist Rachel Goodwin. So many Nars products I now want in my makeup bag.ruth-negga

As with Viola Davis, Ruth Negga scored a double style win on Sunday night switching from dreamy red Valentino into a glitzy Oscar De La Renta. While the spill fear is high with all three of these dress changes – so much white – they all make a whole lot of sense in the ‘not having to worry about anyone stepping on the bottom of their dress’ thing.mindy-kalingMindy Kaling gives great floral in floor length Naeem Khan at the VF party and I’m feeling all set for spring (the rain that is pouring down also might have something to do with this).jon-hammJon Hamm in a tux is never not great.janelle-monaeA post Spirit Awards/pre Oscars night out for Janelle Monáe attending a Chanel party in West Hollywood and stepping outside her signature black and white zone in a very sparkly Chanel tuxedo dress. All the heart eyes for this outfit choice, lipstick and how much Monáe has lit up TV Ate My Wardrobe during award season.sarah-paulsonNow award season is over it is time to switch the focus back to all the good TV that is premiering in March and April. Sarah Paulson is back on a Ryan Murphy project and at the Feud premiere she looks the retro part in vintage gingham Valentino. keri-russell-and-matthew-rhysFX is having quite the premiere week and at The Americans season 5 event Keri Russell does super sexy ladysuit in lace Gucci and Matthew Rhys mixes casual cool in Rag & Bone (NYFW pays off). Russell’s makeup artist Tina Turnbow gives another fabulous behind the scenes getting ready photo diary and as I mention above I love these extra red carpet details. Also I can’t resist all that eyeliner.

The Americans returns next week (Tuesday, March 7) and you can read my interview with costume designer Katie Irish here.mahershala-aliSeveral of the Moonlight cast were wearing Calvin Klein on Sunday night and after seeing shots on the Calvin Klein Instagram I figured a campaign was imminent; in fact it was out by the time I hit post. These images kept popping up on my Twitter TL all Monday and each time there was a whole lot of face fanning. You can see more of this campaign here and this one of Oscar winning actor Mahershala Ali is a good place to start.

Best of the 2017 Oscars Red Carpet: Dudes in Suits

27 Feb

Oh hey there! Welcome to part 2 of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Oscar red carpet coverage and often the suits get relegated to quick round up at the end of a post or lumped in elsewhere. Not this year as there are so many good ones including your classic tuxedo choice and a lot of variation.

For the gowns head heremahershala-aliMahershala Ali has been a regular fixture during award season and he doesn’t just stick to one look switching from white at the SAGs to black last night. Ali’s was the first award of the night and he delivered an incredible speech; he is also the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar and the significance of this right now should not be lost.

Rather than a red carpet shot I wanted to get Ali with is statue and this also gives a good look at his three piece tux and that pocket square, which adds a flash of pattern. tarell-alvin-mccraneyWe’re going to be keeping on the Moonlight theme for the next few photos and it is not just those in front of the camera who pulled out all the stops as writer Tarell Alvin McCraney shut everything down in this all-white ensemble. On a night of many different causes being recognized through pins and ribbons McCraney is wearing Elizabeth Taylor’s original AIDs awareness one; it has a deep level of significance as his mother died from AIDs related complications.

Along with Barry Jenkins they gave one of the most thoughtful speeches of the night when they picked up the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar.andre-hollandAndré Holland gives great classic tux and I really wish there was another season of The Knick.trevante-rhodes-alex-r-hibbert-and-ashton-sandersChiron through ages and the these three Moonlight actors walked the red carpet together and Trevante Rhodes, Alex R. Hibbert and Ashton Sanders all look great in their matching Calvin Klein by Raf Simons suits.

This needs to be an ad campaign. Updated to include the news that ad campaigns are actually underway! And there’s more *insert flames emoji*

david-oyelowoDavid Oyelowo mentioned during his E! red carpet interview that Dolce & Gabbana always serve him well and he isn’t wrong; love the white jacket with black lapels look.dev-and-his-mumDev Patel gets all the adorable points as he brought his mother to the Academy Awards as his date (she also looks amazing) and he really is a whole lot of handsome in Burberry.riz-ahmedMoving on to the blues and there’s nothing to feel sad about here as super stylist Ilaria Urbinati knows menswear and how to make an impact. Case in point Riz Ahmed in Ermenegildo Zegna.chris-evansChris Evans is also an Ilaria Urbinati client and in a different shade of blue – but just as striking – he’s crushing it in Salvatore Ferragamo.ryan-goslingIf someone is going to wear ruffles and pull it off it is Ryan Gosling and he looks fabulous in Gucci.john-and-chrissyEntering the cute couple zone and as always Chrissy Teigen gives great content by revealing on E! how nervous John Legend is about performing.

Unrelated, but so far I have only made one thing from Teigen’s cookbook and yet I’ve made them twice because the bacon hashbrown recipe is incredible.john-cho-and-kerri-higuchiI was very happy to see John Cho up on stage and yes I still miss Selfie. I really love the simple elegance of his wife, Kerri Higuchi’s floral frock.andrew-garfield-and-sunny-pawarThere are no words to quite explain just how adorable this photo is. Just know that every time Sunny Pawar came on screen the room squealed with delight. This happened a lot.

Best of the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet

26 Feb

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are the soothing beachside afternoon jaunt we all need before the hustle and bustle of the Oscars; this is always one of my favorite red carpets of the year.

The outfits tend to be a little more on the chilled out and playful side with both pattern and color out in strong force and while I love the dramatic glamour of the Oscars this is much more my speed. Plus the dudes in suits tend to step out of the usual classic comfort zone and this year is no different.

And you get an incredible opening monologue like this one:

It’s strange seeing John Mulaney and Nick Kroll out of their Gil and George costumes after so many months of Oh, Hello.

Now for the best looks of the afternoon.janelle-monaeJanelle Monáe gives another lesson in how to wear black and white on every red carpet and keep things interesting. This time it is Salvatore Ferragamo and I’m digging those coat slung over the shoulders vibes. Great lipstick as per and as I said on Friday, Monáe is one my Oscar most anticipated.ruth-negga-and-colin-firthAnother person who has been a big awards sartorial presence is Ruth Negga and she is also very much on the anticipated list.

Accompanied by super handsome Loving producer Colin Firth going for the no tie/open button option and Negga is stunning in dramatic floral Delpozo.ava-duvernayFlying in from filming A Wrinkle in Time in New Zealand (as well documented on Instagram by Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon) is Ava DuVernay and this patterned Gucci number ticks so many boxes; pleats, botanicals, fabulous collar.naomie-harrisMulticolor patchwork Chanel for Naomie Harris and I love everything about this look except for the random bit of lace that looks like someone accidentally forgot to cut it off. Don’t be the Topshop school of somehow adding lace or tulle to things that don’t need them.taraji-p-hensonMullet dresses are very much hit or miss for me and Taraji P. Henson’s ethereal Giambattista Valli happily falls into the first category. The slightly windy conditions add some drama and those gold Jimmy Choo sandals are fabulous.nasim-pedradEntering mini dress territory with Nasim Pedrad in textured green florals.aubrey-plazaAubrey Plaza is a regular on this Spirit Awards rundown and the best thing about this is she takes a very different approach each time. Here she has taken a page out of the Janelle Monáe clashing black and white patterns book in a somewhat ’60s trippy Versus Versace top and skirt. Bonus lipstick points too.isabelle-huppertLooking cool as ever – this time in Chloé – and with the award for best actress to boot is Isabelle Huppert and I wonder if she will repeat this win tonight against Emma Stone.jon-hamm-edgar-ramirez-and-jenny-slateJenny Slate is in a handsome men in suits sandwich with Jon Hamm and Edgar Ramirez. Love her choice of Luisa Beccaria pleats and halter for this seaside venue. mahershala-aliNew dad Mahershala Ali continued his fabulous suit streak and the best thing about this is the red shoes he paired it with.

And I am finally seeing Moonlight this afternoon and this has been a very good movie watching weekend. trevante-rhodesKeeping the suave Moonlight cast score high is Trevante Rhodes in a double-breasted grey number paired with oxblood shoes.jaden-piner-and-alex-r-hibbertMore Moonlight and bonus delightful kids alert as Jaden Piner leans casual whereas Alex R. Hibbert does the tuxedo thing (but keeps things chill in white Vans).aldis-hodgeMy favorite suit of the day and Hidden Figures’ Aldis Hodge is giving great mixed patterns. The pocket square/pin/tie details give this three piece suit ensemble the edge over everyone else.viggoI saw rumblings on Twitter the other day that there might be a Casey Affleck upset tonight and that Viggo might be the reason. Regardless of whether he does win the Oscar, he looks great here in burgundy.david-oyelowoDavid Oyelowo had one of my favorite looks at the 2015 Spirit Awards in a knockout blue suit and this year he’s gone for something a little more subdued, but still just as stylish and his tie delivers a splash of color.nick-kroll-and-john-mulaneyAs I mentioned above it is going to take a little bit of time getting used to John Mulaney and Nick Kroll out of their Gil and George costumes/makeup. This is a good start and along with a hilarious and blistering monologue they both look fabulous.annette-beningEnding things on a super smiley Annette Bening looking cool as fuck in a black turtleneck. I saw 20th Century Women yesterday and it was everything I hoped it would be and more. This post has been written to Talking Heads because of this movie.

Come back tomorrow for plenty more red carpet posts.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 Feb

February is very much like September in that this is the time of year when there is A LOT of stuff going on and it can be hard to keep on top of everything. Over the last week there have been multiple big award shows (and some smaller one), New York Fashion Week and the new magazine cover cycle is kicking into action.

So we have a little bit of all that. Enjoy!ruth-neggaRuth Negga scores another cover and her hot streak continues. I will definitely be picking up Another Magazine this weekend (they give 10 reasons to get this issue and it turns out I only need one) and as my friend Whitney pointed out on Twitter there is a whole Elizabeth Taylor in BUtterfield 8 vibe to Negga’s cover styling.marhershala-aliAlso soaking up the award season success is Mahershala Ali and he is giving great sweater posing on the cover of this week’s Hollywood Reporter. There’s also a whole lot of suit wearing to go with this in-depth and thoughtful interview that is definitely worth a read.michelle-williamsThe amount of conversations I had about this dress which pretty much started “Is that a face?!” were numerous and Michelle Williams wore a very fun custom Louis Vuitton mini sparkle frock to the BAFTAs at the weekend. It also had me questioning exactly what my eyes were seeing and I like that she mixed it up here. Plus there are no potentially dangerous neck adornments on this one.

What this is missing is a strong red lip and maybe Michelle Williams needs to head to Riverdale to borrow some of Betty’s Seduce Scarlet.emily-bluntThe bodice really makes Emily Blunt’s Alexander McQueen gown at the BAFTAs and it definitely feels like the kind of dress that deserves a dramatic dance scene. The dragonfly ring is also pretty damn great on the whole accessory front and would be the perfect partner to a Diane Lockhart brooch.viola-davisViola Davis’ winning streak for Fences continued at the BAFTAs and she looked stunning in three blue tone Jenny Packham.issa-raeAt the NAACP Image Awards Issa Rae shook off everything winter in floral Stella Nolasco. I might still be wrapped in knitwear, but as I write this the sun is shining and the effect of this dress means I’m already feeling warmer.yara-shahidiMint green and iridescent frills and pleats for Yara Shahidi wearing a Blumarine gown that makes me wish she was in Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled.riz-ahmedRiz Ahmed gave a brilliant performance on the season 6 premiere of Girls as a super chill surfer bro and at the Elle Style Awards he switches out the shorts and tee for yet another fantastic suit.

Showing he can go classic or mix it up; super stylist Ilaria Urbinati has such a good eye for suits that go there and this stars and flowers Valentino is another big hitter.amanda-peetAt the Michael Kors show Amanda Peet gives great day wear in a shiny belted shirt dress. My only concern is how cold her feet must be in the New York weather. A spare pair of boots is required.

The same goes for Keri Russell in her peep toe gold Louboutins (which I love) and this outfit manages to mix super comfy with a knitted super t-neck Celine sweater and bold floral Dries Van Noten pants. Expect more Keri Russell appearances on here over the next few weeks as we get nearer to the season 5 premiere of The Americans.

img_0615The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has seen an uptick in ratings recently and he is crushing the political chat right now; it is really lovely to see Colbert mixing the bite of his former show with the traditional late night format and we really need it right now.

This week has also included some top notch guests with Christine Baranski lighting things up in a very dazzling number:

And then Tatiana Maslany also got in on this sparkly act:

Last week we also found out when the last season of Orphan Black will return; mark your calendar for Saturday, June 10.

Best of the 2017 SAG Red Carpet: Suits, Velvet and More

30 Jan

Now for part 2 of the TV Ate My Wardrobe SAG coverage. For speech highlights and all things that sparkle head here. On the menu we have plenty of suits, a whole lot velvet, the kids from Stranger Things and some classic style. maisie-williamsMaisie Williams looks like a 1940s movie starlet in a light pink satin Charlie Brear dress and now I want to see her in something set in this period.

Also, thanks to Racked for this lipstick post which includes details of how to get Maisie (and Evan Rachel Wood’s) killer lip color. evan-rachel-woodMore ladysuit goodness from Evan Rachel Wood and this time she has opted for a midnight blue double-breasted velvet by Altuzarra. This kicks off the big velvet trend of the night and I am all for this material making a comeback.judith-lightQueen Judith Light also taking in the blue velvet (*cue song*) and crushing it in Tom Ford.kirsten-dunstNewly engaged Kirsten Dunst (sadly no Jesse Plemons on the red carpet) looks like she might have wedding dresses on her mind and this Dior would work down the aisle, but isn’t so bridal that it is out of place here. The combination of the statement necklaces and metallic straps works like a charm.sarah-paulson-sagSarah Paulson has been all about the sparkles of late, but for the SAG awards she went classic in a black strapless Vera Wang dress and an amazing ivory cape. Red lipstick and big earrings are the way to go here.

I mentioned it in the first post already and yet it is worth repeating that in Sarah Paulson’s speech she mentioned donating to the ACLU and you can do that here.mahershala-aliAnother speech I highlighted in part 1 of this SAG coverage was Mahershala Ali’s, which is both emotional and important. Ali continues his super suave domination and this time he wears a Ermenegildo Zegna Couture white tuxedo.michiel-husimanMore velvet and all the swoons because Michiel Huisman.rami-malekAn Ilaria Urbinati double bill coming your way and first up Rami Malek in a Dior suit that stands out and works because he is Rami Malek.riz-ahmedA touch of velvet is sometimes all you need as Riz Ahmed shows with the lapels on his Zegna tux.glen-powellFor delightfully classic in his tuxedo choice there is Glenn Powell.simon-helberg-and-jocelyn-towneThe most overt political statement on the SAG red carpet came from Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg and wife Jocelyn Towne who wore her feelings across her chest. Kudos to them for not keeping quiet and using this very public opportunity to demonstrate. It feels weird to bring fashion into this moment, but Helberg is also doing the velvet thing and it looks great on him. transparentLeopard print ladysuit! And Amy Landecker wasn’t the only person wearing this bold St John number and leopard continues to dominate. More blue velvet too from the Transparent cast and Alexandra Billings’ feather touch is fabulous. Oh hey Jay, you look lovely too.stranger-teensBarb got to come play! Stranger Things teens (well one of them is still a teen in this case – looking at you Shannon Purser) and the height of Joe Keery’s hair is maybe bigger than Jean Ralphio’s and I don’t know how that is possible. Natalia Dyer’s custom Miu Miu is both delicate and bold and I love that Shannon Purser has gone full black gown and red lip.stranger-kidsStranger Things kids continue to have the most fun and somehow it is still super charming. They’re also still some of the best dressed people on the red carpet in brands that are affordable (see Finn Wolfhard’s teal Topman suit) and on the splurge end with Millie Bobby Brown in red Armani.

Best of the Pre-Golden Globes: The AFI Awards and BAFTA Tea Party

8 Jan

Before the main event and all the fancy gowns tonight there are the pre-Golden Globes parties and other awards. Plenty of pattern, color and interesting looks from a lot of the nominees you will be seeing walk the red carpet later.claire-foyIt took me a moment to realize this is Claire Foy because I’ve got used to her Elizabeth hair and styling on The Crown in which she looks a good five years older than she does here. The weight of the crown and all that.

Love this pattern clashing with a hint of polka dot at the AFI Awards and I have a feeling she will be picking up the Golden Globe tonight. Which I will be more than happy with even if my heart lies with Keri Russell.natalia-dyerAnother fun mix of texture and print with Stranger Things’ Natalia Dyer in this fun floral number. And expect a major hair changes in Stranger Things season 2 as they get on the wig train. naomie-harris-afiNaomie Harris falls into the Magical Fashion Unicorn territory (see also her outfit from the BAFTA event below) and a yellow double breasted sleeveless coat dress might be a hard look to pull off. But Harris does just that and this Phillip Lim Spring 2017 works like a charm paired with black pants. Looking forward to seeing Harris on the red carpet tonight.donald-gloverDonald Glover has the patterned shirt paired with a suit/no tie casual cool thing down and I can even get on board the no socks things with him.marhershala-aliOnce again going super suave look is Moonlight’s Mahershala Ali and the red polka dot pocket square is an excellent accessory choice.chris-pineThanks Jarett Wieselman for pointing out that Entertainment Tonight’s Instagram referred to this AFI Awards look as “No one rocks the dapper werewolf in a turtleneck aesthetic quite like Chris Pine.” There’s nothing more to add to this A+ observation and also can someone make this movie? Please and thank you. riz-ahmedI am a big fan of the suits that aren’t black/brown/navy/grey and Riz Ahmed is a dream in burgundy.emma-stoneMoving on to the BAFTA LA Tea Party and it comes as no shock that I am madly in love with Emma Stone in this very ’70s looking DVF polka dot halter dress. The long brown suede Brock Collection resort coat Stone wore on top is only adding to these very strong feelings.ruth-neggaMore floral pattern delights from one of the women crushing award season and Ruth Negga’s The Vampire’s Wife frock is another winner. Excellent shoe and lipstick color too that is somehow matchy matchy without giving me a headache.naomie-harrisMore Magical Fashion Unicorn from Naomie Harris in a dress that could threaten to be overpowering. This is an exceptional Thom Browne embroidered number showing there are many ways to do botanicals. Also bonus points for the non-boring/non-beige Christian Louboutin pumps.maisie-williamsMaisie Williams wears a very cute gingham frock by Holly Fulton and she continues to light up any red carpet.millie-bobby-brownAlso in the very cute category is Millie Bobby Brown and she continues to walk the sophisticated and age appropriate line; this time in a simple Kate Spade New York with a bow on the back.michelle-williamsMore Louis Vuitton for Michelle Williams and this pink shift dress is part of the cute section for a reason. It could boarder on too saccharine, but these fantastic gold shoes offset the sweetness. caitriona-balfeCaitriona Balfe can wear extravagant gowns from any period and also kill it in the simplest black Ferragamo number. Another one to watch tonight.amy-adamsMore on the black dress front and Amy Adams looks classic in Dolce and Gabbana. isabelle-huppertLadySuit Watch 2017 gets off to a great start with the effortlessly cool Isabelle Huppert in red.diego-lunaOh, hello. All the Diego Luna swoons.

tom-hiddlestonMore burgundy delights and Tom Hiddleston is not one to shy away from a suit with a punch; this time super stylist Ilaria Urbinati has put him in double breasted Gucci.
