Out of the Box: Look of the Week

5 Jan

Happy New Year! And welcome to the first “Out of the Box” of 2018. Strap in as it is a long one.

The first week in January is not a time to quietly slip into things because award season is well and truly here. The Golden Globes are this weekend, but before that we have sartorial highs from the NYFCC Awards and the Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards Gala, among other shindigs.

It is also Winter TCA! So much TV news to digest. Plus new magazines are hitting newsstands. For a deep dive into the super candid Michelle Williams conversation with Harper’s Bazaar head here.

But first watch Tiffany Haddish give an amazing 17-minute speech at the NYFCC Awards as filmed/uploaded by Buzzfeed’s Alison Willmore.

Golden Globes, this is what you are missing out on. Oscar voters please consider your options carefully. Haddish’s Girls Trip performance deserves celebrating. The Armie/Timothée interesting outfit tour continues. And once again they are playing off each other in much the same way that Elio and Oliver do in Call Me By Your Name; in one scene Elio wears horizontal stripes while Oliver is in vertical. Complimentary, but also at odds.

At the NYFCC Awards Chalamet opts for pinstripes while Hammer goes for purple check Etro. Looking forward to more from this pair throughout this awards cycle.Get Out’s Betty Gabriel leans into a ’80s rom-com vibe in pink ombré Pamella Roland. Let’s also take this moment to rage over how dumb the SAG Awards rules are when it comes to the ensemble category. So, so dumb. As part of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Jessica Chastain attended Variety’s Creative Impact Awards and 10 Directors to Watch, in day event Givenchy dress perfection. Plus it has pockets. I saw Molly’s Game this week and whoa was this is a good reminder of the bandage dress and super cleavy trends of the mid to late ’00s. And there those bandage dresses should stay.

Chastain is incredible in this film, but the last act is a mess. As I mentioned on Twitter, when there is good Sorkin there comes bad Sorkin. And that bench therapy scene is definitely the latter. I know I should hate the cropped palazzo pants aspect and beige strappy sandals, but I love the overall bold pink/red combo. The scarlet bustier is fabulous and Wonder Woman adjacent. Gal Gadot looks effortlessly cool in this Oscar da la Renta ensemble that would threaten to swap others. A whole lot of swoon at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards from both Sebastian Stan and Allison Janney. Janney is crushing it in green Lela Rose.
How to do sophisticated and comfy elegance the Jessica Paré way. Megan Draper would definitely approve.  Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon featured on our Best of 2017 “Out of the Box” rundown and they are already kicking the new year off in style. Mustard plus a cape element makes this a dream dress and I’m all for a plaid dinner jacket. Going for gold in Dolce & Gabbana. Tick. Another strong look for Armie Hammer courtesy of Ilaria Urbinati.

At the Palm Springs after party Saoirse Ronan in striking pink and gold Gucci caught up with her Lady Bird co-star, Timothée Chalamet. This photo is delightful. An early contender for best airport style. The only thing I would change about Emilia Clarke’s outfit is those shoes. Switch them out for the Adidas sneakers would really make this look. Coveting this blazer hard.Fox kicked off Winter 2018 TCA yesterday including a panel from new show 9-1-1. Aisha Hinds is giving great pattern clashing and bold lipstick. And people rarely work a pair of specs as fun as these. The thing to remember about TCA is to pick an outfit that looks great sitting down and Hinds does just this. Matt Czuchry is back on TV in The Resident and now he has facial hair! Because he is a doctor with no time to shave. Also a dream chunky knit sweater and leather coat is giving me strong feelings. Bruce Greenwood is working those silver fox vibes, but is Shaunette Renée Wilson in beautiful velvet that is really drawing my sartorial drooling. Not going to get bored of seeing these two. Nope. Never. This is great cover; simple and striking.W’s Best Performers of the Year issue is always super fun. This cover has me writing a script for an ’80s set movie starring Saoirse Ronan and Andrew Garfield, where they play rich siblings who start off as assholes but then have an important lesson to learn. There will be a dance scene.

This also might be the first time someone has appeared in three separate shots on “Out of the Box.”Warming my soul and causing me to write a rom-com starring Tom Hanks and Mary J. Blige, in a second chance at love scenario. Glamour needs to stop with this coverline design. It is too much and not in a good way. What they don’t need to stop with is cover images like this one and I love everything about this shot of Tracee Ellis Ross.

Ross also has some super wise words, particularly on the discussion that is happening and not just in Hollywood, after the Harvey fallout:

“Yes, it is so simple. Of course people want to be complimented, but you want to be complimented in a way that respects who you are—maybe you don’t want to be complimented on your clothing. You have that right to say to your coworker, “That’s not a thing that I enjoy.” “Oh, no problem. I won’t do that anymore.” It is all about respect and giving people a choice about how we are touching and talking about their body. Historically, women have not had ownership of our own bodies. And it is enough. It is enough. You do not get to touch my body or comment on my body as you please. Period.”

Best of the 2017 Oscars Red Carpet: Dudes in Suits

27 Feb

Oh hey there! Welcome to part 2 of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Oscar red carpet coverage and often the suits get relegated to quick round up at the end of a post or lumped in elsewhere. Not this year as there are so many good ones including your classic tuxedo choice and a lot of variation.

For the gowns head heremahershala-aliMahershala Ali has been a regular fixture during award season and he doesn’t just stick to one look switching from white at the SAGs to black last night. Ali’s was the first award of the night and he delivered an incredible speech; he is also the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar and the significance of this right now should not be lost.

Rather than a red carpet shot I wanted to get Ali with is statue and this also gives a good look at his three piece tux and that pocket square, which adds a flash of pattern. tarell-alvin-mccraneyWe’re going to be keeping on the Moonlight theme for the next few photos and it is not just those in front of the camera who pulled out all the stops as writer Tarell Alvin McCraney shut everything down in this all-white ensemble. On a night of many different causes being recognized through pins and ribbons McCraney is wearing Elizabeth Taylor’s original AIDs awareness one; it has a deep level of significance as his mother died from AIDs related complications.

Along with Barry Jenkins they gave one of the most thoughtful speeches of the night when they picked up the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar.andre-hollandAndré Holland gives great classic tux and I really wish there was another season of The Knick.trevante-rhodes-alex-r-hibbert-and-ashton-sandersChiron through ages and the these three Moonlight actors walked the red carpet together and Trevante Rhodes, Alex R. Hibbert and Ashton Sanders all look great in their matching Calvin Klein by Raf Simons suits.

This needs to be an ad campaign. Updated to include the news that ad campaigns are actually underway! And there’s more *insert flames emoji*

david-oyelowoDavid Oyelowo mentioned during his E! red carpet interview that Dolce & Gabbana always serve him well and he isn’t wrong; love the white jacket with black lapels look.dev-and-his-mumDev Patel gets all the adorable points as he brought his mother to the Academy Awards as his date (she also looks amazing) and he really is a whole lot of handsome in Burberry.riz-ahmedMoving on to the blues and there’s nothing to feel sad about here as super stylist Ilaria Urbinati knows menswear and how to make an impact. Case in point Riz Ahmed in Ermenegildo Zegna.chris-evansChris Evans is also an Ilaria Urbinati client and in a different shade of blue – but just as striking – he’s crushing it in Salvatore Ferragamo.ryan-goslingIf someone is going to wear ruffles and pull it off it is Ryan Gosling and he looks fabulous in Gucci.john-and-chrissyEntering the cute couple zone and as always Chrissy Teigen gives great content by revealing on E! how nervous John Legend is about performing.

Unrelated, but so far I have only made one thing from Teigen’s cookbook and yet I’ve made them twice because the bacon hashbrown recipe is incredible.john-cho-and-kerri-higuchiI was very happy to see John Cho up on stage and yes I still miss Selfie. I really love the simple elegance of his wife, Kerri Higuchi’s floral frock.andrew-garfield-and-sunny-pawarThere are no words to quite explain just how adorable this photo is. Just know that every time Sunny Pawar came on screen the room squealed with delight. This happened a lot.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

7 Sep

Instagram delivers on the TV style front, film festival glamour and on set singing this week. Plus find out some intimate You’re the Worst information and the usual amount of sweater and lipstick coveting.

The Leftovers is still shooting its final season out in Australia and I am glad to see Justin Theroux will be sporting his beard throughout. Liv Tyler captures him here working the leopard print in the hair and makeup trailer.

It has been a bit of a Leftovers watching week as I got the second season for my birthday and I wrote about Kevin’s karaoke here.

The kids from Stranger Things crushed their appearance on The Tonight Show and Questlove captures some of the backstage madness in this group selfie.

Still no details about who Matthew Rhys is playing on Girls but here he is shooting a scene with Lena Dunham, beard and all.

Mindy Kaling has been documenting Adam Pally eating chips on the set of The Mindy Project and I am here for it.

Mindy also continues to document the costuming from her show and studs are definitely in this season.

Spikes too and I’m not sure if this costume or Taraji P. Henson’s own collection. Either way they look terrifying and incredible in equal measure.

The search for the perfect Emmy dress continues and I wonder if we will see any of these on the red carpet come September 18.

I can only see half this sweater, but I know I love it.

You’re the Worst returned last week with a fabulous episode and the cast took over the Backstage Instagram. There’s plenty of behind the scenes videos including Chris Geere showing off a modesty pouch/cock sock. He definitely had to wear one in the season premiere.

Standard lipstick and sunglasses envy.

Chris Geere was also understandably excited to make his talk show debut on The Late Show.

One of my favorite costume designers with one of my favorite actresses. Looking forward to seeing what this pairing brings.

Now for one of my makeup artist faves with another Orange is the New Black stars and this series of photos of Natasha Lyonne are fantastic.

The iZombie set continues to deliver on the fun and the songs.

Greg Williams delivers once again on intimate photographs from the Venice Film Festival and here are a few of my favorites. Starting with Jake getting ready, just because.

Getting up close with super couple Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber. Luckily this dress doesn’t require some awkward lying down.

When in Venice you’ve got to have a boat shot. For more from Greg Williams check out his portraits from the festival at Vanity Fair.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 Oct

“Out of the Box” is serving up an almost all Elle Women in Hollywood rundown with a bonus fantasy casting prospect courtesy of the GQ Gentlemen’s ball. There’s a shift into fall threads and a whole lot simple designs with a twist sticking with a blue/black/white color palette. Oh and the event was in association with Calvin Klein, this is pretty much what most attendees are wearing.

Lizzy CaplanLizzy Caplan’s color block big collar number is like the Calvin Klein sporty twist on this Louis Vuitton outfit Michelle Williams wore to the Cabaret opening night. The zip details give it a playful edge and it’s a super cute dress.

Ashley MadekweWearing a Calvin Klein LBD with a difference thanks to the addition of a metallic bib is Ashley Madekwe and this is another stunning simple look with a slight edge.

Kerry WashingtonMore dramatic zip detail and an even more dramatic neckline, which looks like the fanciest serviette; Kerry Washington is totally pulling off a dress that might be too much for others. The dash of blue eye makeup doesn’t delve into matchy matchy territory and I love her oxblood nail color next to navy of the dress.

Tina FeySo we’ve had a LBD with a twist and now here’s just a simple and effective LBD from Tina Fey.

Brie LarsonAnd another very simple outfit from one of the cover stars of the Women in Hollywood issue of Elle and Brie Larson hits one of my sweet spots for a fancy(ish) pants event as I’m a sucker for the menswear influence (owning a really good lady tux is the dream)The only thing that doesn’t quite work is going full monochromatic with the Louboutin pumps (which are a slightly different shade of white).

Joshua Jackson and Taylor KitschI would make a #TrueDetectiveSeason2 gag here if one of them wasn’t probably/definitely been cast, but if someone could cast ‘Grizzly McBeardy’ Andrew Garfield, this dashing and well tailored Joshua Jackson and a very Riggins looking Taylor Kitsch in something then I would be thrilled. Make this happen casting people. Oh and maybe trim Andrew Garfield’s beard down just a smidge (okay a few inches). For now we have this excellent image thanks to the GQ Gentlemen’s Ball.

Best of the 2014 Met Gala – Part Two

6 May

Continuing our look at the Met Gala celebrating Charles James and part two (head here for part one) is focusing on the couples and dudes.

Emma StoneEmma Stone and Andrew Garfield have been on the promo trail for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for months it seems and both of them deliver once again. While I’m mourning the loss of Andrew Garfield’s incredible hair, Emma Stone is doing a good distraction job with a chunky side-braid that’s making me long for hair that can be tied up again. Stone’s Thakoon two-piece in pink and magenta is incredibly eye-catching and the leg slit is tastefully provocative. In a grey Band of Outsiders tux jacket, Garfield is complementing the pinks of Stone’s ensemble while also standing out himself.

Diane Kruger and Joshua JacksonDiane Kruger and Joshua Jackson were on the most anticipated list and they didn’t disappoint. Diane Kruger’s Jason Wu for Hugo Boss is sleek and the contrasting shimmery fabric on the bottom half is mesmerizing. Jackson doesn’t look too bad either. So many Pacey feelings right now.

Beyonce and Jay-ZBeyoncé’s black beaded Givenchy Couture gown is super sexy and like nothing else we saw on the red carpet at the Met Gala. The beaded veil ties the look together and the pop of burgundy lip color adds more dramatic impact. This is a great turn from Beyoncé and she tends to bring her A-game to this event (and to everything she does really). Jay Z is looking pretty dapper in a white tux jacket.

Sarah Silverman and Michael SheenSarah Silverman tends to do things differently on the red carpet and on this occasion she is wearing a maroon Zac Posen that is possibly the best interpretation of the 2014 theme (maybe tying with Taylor Swift). Michael Sheen’s done the decoration part of the dress code and the couple will be appearing together in the new season of Masters of Sex (which I’m already super anticipating).

Blake LivelyOne couple who don’t tend to pose together on the red carpet did away with this eye roll inducing policy last night. Both Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are wearing Gucci with Lively injecting some old Hollywood glamour into the Charles James celebration. This gown is pure Blake Lively (maybe too much) and the train adds a hint of romanticism to the look.

Claire Danes and Hugh DancyClaire Danes’ Oscar de la Renta gown is one we featured during NYFW and where Emma Stone’s ensemble is putting a contemporary twist on the Charles James theme, Danes is doing the same with color blocking pink and burgundy in a classic structured gown. The velvet/satin material twist is doing something different and a beardy Hugh Dancy looks pretty sharp in his traditional tuxedo.

Kim KCredit where credit is due as Kim Kardashian shows a big improvement on last year’s floral disaster. Maybe it’s the recent Vogue cover, but both Kim and Kanye look pretty damn good in Lanvin. Kanye’s gone all in with tails and a white piqué vest and while Kim’s daring thigh split was problematic, there’s no need to dwell on that when they look this good.

Matt BomerNow to the dudes and Matt Bomer in a tux is pretty much all I need to say.

Benedict CumberbatchFollowed quickly by Benedict Cumberbatch in tails and he’s observing the dress code for the guys which asked for white tie and decorations – most have the white tie down, but Cumberbatch goes the extra distance with a pocket chain. Very dapper indeed.

For part one of our Met Gala coverage head here.
