Best of the 2018 Oscars Red Carpet: Metallics and Neutrals

5 Mar

Welcome! To the second part of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Oscar coverage. This post has a whole lot of sparkle, white frocks, ladysuit tails and more.

For Part 1 head here.Wakanda Forever! Lupita Nyong’o wore a lot of armor inspired looks during the Black Panther press tour and this gold sequin Atelier Versace is serving up red carpet warrior to new levels. Danai Gurira wears soft blush Gabriela Hearst with a fierce edge thanks to the silver detail on her shaved head. Adding a touch of African heritage with a scarf is Winston Duke, wearing a fabulous Etro ensemble.

I really hope Black Panther will get honored at the 91st Academy Awards.A dress that shimmers and shimmies is the dream; Gal Gadot has the perfect Givenchy couture gown.I was thrilled to see Gina Rodriguez presenting and she had the gown to match in Zuhair Murad.Sally Hawkins does whimsical delight in The Shape ff Water and IRL in a sequin Armani Prive gown.More cape and ladysuit excellence from Sarah Broom and Dee Rees with Rees going all in wearing tales. I am also in awe of her shoes. Keeping it classic in white Calvin Klein by Appointment. Laura Dern now gets the great honor of once again being my lock screen image as I couldn’t not make the Dern/Gerwig pairing anything but that. Now for something completely different with a dash of leather daddy on the red carpet.

Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon took the cold shoulder trend in an unexpected direction in a cropped Jeremy Scott for Moschino jacket, leather harness and patent leather bow-tie.I saw Lady Bird for a second time yesterday and Beanie Feldstein steals every scene she is in. And she looks wonderful in ombré Sachin and Babi. The detail looks like roots from a magical tree. Perfect movie prom frock. There were a number of stand out white frocks yesterday, including Janet Mock in stunning caped Christian Siriano. Team Get Out looked pretty damn good and Lakeith Stanfield was my favorite guy in blue wearing Ermenegildo Zegna Couture.Jane Fonda mentioned that the Oscar set was reminiscent of Barbarella, she’s also serving so much sci-fi shoulders in custom Balmain. Oscar Isaac recently discussed the reasons why he decided to marry long-time girlfriend Elvira Lind and the pair look cool af at the Academy Awards. Her dress has a whole Scandinavian vibe and he looks totally fine with his wife being taller than him in heels. Last year Mahershala Ali was one of the best dressed award season contenders. And he continues this streak. It is like he invented the velvet jacket in Berluti.Couple faves Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani go super classic formal; Kumail ditches the pattern for the Bond look in Ermenegildo Zegna and Emily is a tulle queen in J. Mendel. The rest of the party pictures will be up on here later in the week, but I couldn’t not include Emily’s incredible change from sweet to caped snake charmer. It would probably be much easier to go around than climb over the seats, but I’m honestly a bit impressed that Jennifer Lawrence manages this in a fancy Dior gown I actually like AND with a glass of wine in her hand. No falling over this time. And for that she gets the final picture of this post.

Best of the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet

4 Mar

Happy Oscars Day! But really this means Happy Day After the Independent Spirit Awards! My official favorite award season red carpet. The reason it is my favorite? Don’t get me wrong I love a fancy gown, but the ensembles at the Spirit Awards are all about having fun with fashion. These are the kind of outfits I would wear, suits have more color and the casual/fancy vibe is infectious.

Plus this is a ceremony where Nick Kroll and John Mulaney are the hosts and Timothée Chalamet wins Best Actor.

And for some Oscar weekend reading, check out my deep dive into the many eggs that feature in the Best Picture nominees for Little White Lies.

As with last year’s Spirit Awards, this was a blisteringly funny opening monologue. This time they called out some of the very bad men of Hollywood including the terrible apologies. And they don’t just limit it to Weinstein and Spacey. Mulaney/Kroll they did not drop the ball on this one and they really should host more award shows.

“Chalamet, you stay.” Especially because he gives the most adorable speech. He makes me believe that things will be okay.

For all the award speeches head here.

To the fashion! *Fires up “Crash Into Me,” starts weeping*

Both Saoirse Ronan and Beanie Feldstein look like ’60s queens. Ronan has a whole Twiggy thing going on in embellished Prada. Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani have consistently been the best dressed couple during award season and the press tour for The Big Sick. This is no different.

Here they demonstrate how you can pattern clash as a couple to the highest sartorial level. I am weak for stripes; Emily’s Whitney Mero dress is hitting all the right spots. Kumail is looking all kinds of Hannibal in ASOS plaid.

This dress also serves up so much photo drama. For their acceptance speech for Best First Screenplay.

Yesterday I found out that Dee Rees has been using Beyoncé’s stylist, this is another fantastic suit choice in a season of fantastic suit choices.

Ladysuits and Capes would be the name of my boutique (I’m sure I can think of something punny, but it is early). Dee Rees and Sarah Broom are high on the list of couple style goals. The lining of Broom’s cape and everything about this outfit is elegant af.

Mudbound won the Robert Altman Award and here is Dee Rees’ speech.Last night, I mentioned on Twitter that Aubrey Plaza always looks great at this award show and this is another dress I am coveting hard. Peter Pan collar and the contrasting sleeves on this Miu Miu frock elevates it. While I don’t love the sheer parts of Elisabeth Olsen’s Zuhair Murad dress, I am thrilled Ingrid Goes West won Best First Feature. If I could have any ladysuit it would be a green velvet ladysuit. Sarah Silverman is living out my dream in Hottie + Lord.Pleats, beautiful green pleats. Allison Williams looks a vision in Andrew Gn.Ava DuVernay is another Independent Spirit Awards repeat style queen. This time in puffed sleeves custom Greta Constantine.Patterned slip dress sexiness for Betty Gabriel in Tadashi Shoji. It’s almost animal print, without being animal print.Leaning into the leopard print trend is Margot Robbie in Louis Vuitton. This is what I mean when I say how much fun can be had on this red carpet.

The Independent Spirit Awards is an event that encourages good suits. A bold suit for Chadwick Boseman isn’t just for the Black Panther press tour; this Burberry polka dot look is incredible. And we’re in luck as Boseman has posted a lot of good photos to his Instagram, also featuring Black Panther co-stars Danai Gurira and Daniel Kaluuya. Get Out won Best Feature, Jordan Peele won Best Director. Peele also won Best Jacket in red double-breasted Calvin Klein. Patterned button-down shirts feature a lot on the new series of Queer Eye; the Fab Five would definitely be into everything Mike Colter is doing here. The turtleneck/suit jacket combo is winner, the sneakers work at this event and my Jay Ellis swoon levels are high.I’m still not quite over how terrifying Barry Keoghan is in The Killing of a Secret Deer, but this is adorable.Feeeeeeeeelings. So many CJ and Josh feeeeeeeeelings.A photo of a photo being taken and I love everything about this. Also Allison Janney looks flaming hot in hot pink Pamella Roland.Be still my Lady Bird loving heart. Why yes I am watching this again today.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 Feb

Another week featuring award season shenanigans, NYFW and the blessing that has been the Black Panther press tour. The gift that keeps on giving.

The new Americans artwork for the final season was unveiled this week and it is just as stylistically stylized as the previous five years. Always such a visual pleasure. At Michael Kors, Blake Lively leaned into Valentine’s Day with heart embellished Louboutins and a fabulous red PVC trench, Zendaya mixed athleisure with a sleeveless duster and Emily Blunt is a pattern clashing queen.

The show itself was a lot more eclectic than you would normally get from this designer, but I am a big fan of the Agatha Christie influence. And the leopard print. Stranger Things teen Caleb McLaughlin has been one of the shining stars in menswear on the red carpet over the last couple of years, putting a lot of adults to sartorial shame. McLaughlin looks like he is having fun with fashion so it doesn’t come as a surprise to see him at the Phillip Lim 3.1 show. Here he is with Zosia Mamet; I love her turtleneck/jacket combo.

How to brighten up your day in one step; wear yellow. Jessica Williams looks fabulous going into to the Tibi NYFW show.Dee Rees strikes another ladysuit win in this floral metallic number at the WGA Awards.More florals to fall for with Chelsea Peretti in N°21.

Earlier this week, I watched Get Out for the first time since it came out at the cinema and knowing what is going to happen makes you realize just how layered every line is. I am so happy to see Jordan Peele getting recognized for his work including winning at the WGA for Best Original Screenplay.I am really excited to see Annihilation and the cast is part of the reason why. Delightful dress twirling fun with Tessa Thompson and Gina Rodriguez at the premiere. The Call Me By Your Name promo train keeps on coming, much to my delight. Want to buy the house in the movie? Well now you can. A lot more affordable is the new issue of GQ, which Timothée Chalamet is the cover star of. The whole vibe is moody, emo fun including this shot. That Saint Laurent jacket jumps on the covet list.

This comment from Armie Hammer is very cute. I’m gonna be sad when the CMBYN promotion is done and dusted.

“Timmy had research to do. For me, it was mostly: Do you know how to ride a bike? The day I got there, I barged in on a piano lesson and was, like, ‘As soon as you’re done, we’re hanging out.’ From that moment on, we were together all the time.”Black Panther is now out and we have one more week of this fabulous press tour to enjoy. The film is fantastic, as are the costumes and you can read my interview with Ruth E. Carter here.

The turtleneck/jacket trend continues to be doing big things. Especially when it involves Chadwick Boseman sporting this floral Musika Frere suit. Also at the same New York screening Letitia Wright makes a difficult Coach ensemble look fabulous. That jacket has a kooky ’70s vibe, which is totally in my wheelhouse.

Wright’s performance as Shuri is one of the standout performances in a film of standout performances. I hope we’re going to see a lot more of her in the Marvel universe.Lupita Nyong’o covers the “Culture of Hair Issue” of Allure. The cover is striking, but this shot is really fun, which is why I picked it. In the piece Lupita discusses her hair history, the larger cultural implications, the products she uses and what it was like working on Black Panther:

“On set, it was just such an inspirational experience because so much thought was put into this film, and every single aspect of it was rich and beautiful and just arresting, actually. To see this aspirational African world that actually becomes an example for the whole wide world was spellbinding. We were all very much aware that we were in something extremely special.”

For more in-depth conversation about the celebration of natural black hair in Black Panther I would highly recommend reading this interview with Camille Friend over at The CutThere are no damsels in distress in Black Panther, the age range of the leading women varies and they aren’t just there to be a love interest. Shuri (Letitia Wright), Romonda (Angela Bassett), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) all have agency; it is incredible seeing four black women taking center stage like this. This Essence cover celebrates the Black Panther cast and this is a powerful image.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

1 Dec

The Gotham Awards dominates the sartorial coverage this week with Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird taking home some of the big prizes in both the style and film stakes. There are lots of looks to drool over. I also wrote my first piece for Bustle about Call Me By Your Name and you can read it here.

A big style theme of the week is velvet and the red color spectrum. Dive in below for a lot of both.Zoe Kazan is looking at Timothée Chalamet, how I imagine I would look at Timothée Chalamet at the Gotham Awards, where he picked up Breakthrough Actor.

Every year there is an actor who really brings it suit wise, sometimes it is a kid (see Jacob Tremblay), often it is an Ilaria Urbinati client (see Rami Malek/Riz Ahmed/Donald Glover) and now it looks like Chalamet could be set to join them. Velvet is a good place to start and this Berluit Fall suit is a cracking addition. Velvet is very on trend as you will see as you scroll through. Kazan looks delightful as ever. The Gotham Awards delivered on the fun pairings and this photo is hilarious. Armie Hammer scrubs up well, as always and Saoirse Ronan looks resplendent in Rodarte. This is surely one of many gongs she will be picking up for Lady Bird.Greta Gerwig is pretty in pink in Gucci and I am so happy with all the love she is getting. The year started off with 20th Century Women and the fact it is ending with all these nominations is amazing. More Call Me By Your Name/Big Sick hangouts and more velvet dreams. Critic Tomris Laffly caught the moment Chalamet and Kumail Nanjiani hugged it out while comparing their similar styling choices.

Plus, the couple that wears velvet together stays together and Emily V. Gordon is crushing it. Leopard print pumps are the perfect shoe choice. Meanwhile, CMBYN director Luca Guadagnino takes it to the next level with his jacket and shirt combo. I just found out that Dominique Fishback is playing Kenya in The Hate U Give (one of the best books I have read this year) and I can’t think of a better person to plat this part. Fishback crushed it recently in The Deuce and she was equally magnetic in Show Me a Hero.

I don’t always love a mullet hem, but this metallic Zac Posen frock looks stunning on her. Mudbound director Dee Rees continues to give great coats and she is also wearing the color that is dominating this week’s column. I plan on finally watching this movie at the weekend. At the AOL Build series for Mr. Roosevelt, Noël Wells looks cute af in an outfit I would definitely wear. In fact I have a very similar turtleneck. With just two weeks to go until The Last Jedi opens, the Star Wars cast is beginning to make late night appearances. Here is Daisy Ridley on The Tonight Show in an Ulla Johnson Tess jumpsuit and yep, it is velvet.  A simple, but striking outfit and no doubt Ridley will be making more appearances on here before 2017 is over. What’s that? You want more velvet?! Well, InStyle does not disappoint and neither does Zendaya in matching turquoise horse print.

Addressing the current onslaught of sexual harassment and assault allegations that has besieged Hollywood, Zendaya offers up a thoughtful point about those who have opened up about their horrific experiences:

“The bravery of the women who came forward is a huge step toward making sure it’s safer for me and other young women who are just coming. I’m at that prime age right now. Twenty-one. Starting off. That’s when people take advantage and abuse their power and do terrible shit. I think it’s definitely a sisterhood.”The second annual ‘Women in TV’ issue from The Edit is here! HBO is very well represented by Evan Rachel Wood, Yvonne Orji and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Network and streaming don’t miss out either thanks to Nicole Richie and Sarah Silverman. This is also a good mix of comedy and drama. The all-black outfits are pretty standard fair for this kind of cover, but each woman looks comfortable and fabulous in their ensemble.

Interviews cover everything from being a producer, diversity, to why it is so good to be working in TV at the moment. Evan Rachel Wood answers the latter rather succinctly and it is a point that is often made:

“I feel like [in film] after 23-ish, you go into this dead zone where you can’t play the little ingénue sexpot anymore, but you’re not quite playing mothers or doctors or lawyers yet. On TV, I see well-rounded female characters, their flaws [and] triumphs.”

TV is great, y’all.

Celebrating the 75th Golden Globes with Bold Print and Color

16 Nov

It is mid-November and Golden Globe nominations are just around the corner—they will be announced Monday, 11 December—and as it is the 75th anniversary of these awards, there is of course a party.

And many of the people vying for nominations attended, because of course. A lot of them also happened to give some of the best performances of the year. Big trends of the night include bold prints and color, much to my delight. There are several late entries into the best profiles of 2017 category and Kyle Buchanan’s Vulture interview with Armie Hammer is so good that it warrants its own outtakes article. I saw Call Me by Your Name twice in the space of a week and I am still thinking about it.

Also incredible is his choice of Paul Smith suit and floral T-shirt; this event is casual enough to eschew a collar and I love this fun red carpet take. Another Ilaria Urbinati winner.Alison Brie’s Instagram is a gift for any GLOW fan right now. There are so many good BTS moments from the set, particularly with her hair. Here she has scraped it back and gone with minimal makeup, which makes sense when you’re wearing a Hugo Boss green leopard print velvet dress.  Keeping with the Community cast theme and everything about this Yvette Nicole Brown frock is perfect winter florals. Also going with a botanical print and Tatiana Maslany mixes masculine and feminine styling with aplomb. There is a reason she is a style icon around these parts.Alias Grace is one of the best shows I have seen this year and star Sarah Gadon is a revelation. Gadon is currently doing the talk show circuit (where she is charming as hell) and hopefully she will get some awards love.

And she looks pretty fabulous in Giambattista Valli at this Golden Globes celebration. On and off screen, Yvonne Orji crushes it in the sartorial stakes. An appropriately festive dress by Phuong My and a dramatic bow that doesn’t swamp her.Insecure creator/star Issa Rae goes in a different direction to her co-star and this block color Brandon Maxwell halter neck dress is making me want an afternoon cocktail. Cute without being too saccharine is Saoirse Ronan in a girlish Teresa Helbig frock and I am still desperate to see Lady Bird.13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford in lipstick print Valentino Resort is giving off super fun vibes, but would it have been too on the nose for Langford to wear lipstick as well?I would be thrilled if Tara Lynne Barr got recognized for her performance on Casual (I still think about the stripped down rendition of “Landslide”) and season 3 of this show is probably my favorite so far.

Barr also gives great party frock and colorful pumps; I would like all of this in my own wardrobe.Director Dee Rees continues to wear some of the best jackets on the red carpet and I cannot wait to see Mudbound (which arrives on Netflix tomorrow).Jessica McNamee ticks three of my favorite style boxes; the ladysuit, heritage prints and a bold lip color. More ladysuit treats from Zoe Lister-Jones in Dion Lee and I am also a sucker for the stripe long-sleeve tee with a suit thing, which Adam Scott is doing so well.More Valentino Resort and a very different look for Aubrey Plaza as she dips her two in the Little House on the Prairie pool. It looks pretty damn good.Block color and kooky shoes for another TV Ate My Wardrobe fave. Julia Garner has had a very good year and I am already excited to see what she does in 2018. Namely the Waco miniseries and how much Kimmy will be in the final season of The Americans. I should probably also watch Ozark.Oh, hello. Turtleneck with a suit achievement unlocked and I am now currently casting Sebastian Stan in my as yet unwritten 1970s set movie. It is going to be a doozy.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Oct

Film festival season continues and this week’s “Out of the Box” includes looks from both London and New York. Pattern continues to dominate and even though summer is over, florals are everywhere. Plus magazine covers continue to make me swoon and there’s a little something from Paris Fashion Week after this bumper post mid-week.

Oh and something I went to in person. I really like the Gucci bow collection and it reminds me a little of the Valentino gowns from last year (also at LFF).

At the Breathless premiere Claire Foy lets the dress do the talking, opting for a smoky eye and no accessories. This continues to be a very busy year for the soon-to-be Lisbeth Salander. More Gucci and Carey Mulligan’s gone Grecian goddess in gold and green at the Mudbound premiere. It is a beautiful look that ditches her usual twee styling choices.
Mudbound director Dee Rees tux jacket game is strong and pairing this botanical print with burnt orange is perfect for fall. It is still early doors, but there is Oscar buzz surrounding this movie and it is definitely on my most anticipated list. It will premiere on Netflix next month (November 17).Also on the highly anticipated list is Call Me by Your Name and at the NYFF both Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet have added pattern to their looks. Chalamet’s gone subtle in Prince of Wales check and Armie’s embracing the floral trend. Results are good.

But wait. Guys? THIS IS WHO I AM NOW.

A post shared by Busy Philipps (@busyphilipps) on

Busy gives A+ Paris posing and also I would like this entire outfit, please and thank you. In Busy and Michelle Stories updates; they dyed Michelle’s hair pink and there was definitely a lot of wine consumed.Yesterday, I went to a the LFF Jake Gyllenhaal ‘Screen Talk’ event and this is less about what he was wearing (pretty standard daytime promotion outfit) and more about getting to attend.

I do plan on writing something a bit longer (probably via TinyLetter), but for now enjoy the video above of Jake discussing his Brokeback Mountain audition.

I’m glad to get a close-up look at Edith Bowman’s Altuzarra floral frock as it looked amazing from our third row seats. And while this is the first time I have been to an event like this IRL, I have watched a lot of these kinds of talks online and Edith is one of the best prepared interviewers I have seen; she asked interesting questions, kept the conversation flowing and had done her research.  In more Jake news; he is now the face of Eternity by Calvin Klein alongside model and advocate Liya Kebode and four-year-old actress Leila. We are officially in fragrance season and this is both a print and TV campaign, expect those towards the end of the month. Yes, I will be swooning every single time.

Not sure what this shot of Lupita is for (magazine or otherwise), but I am in awe nonetheless. Double Claire Foy this week and she’s got two big projects coming out in quick succession; Breathless and season 2 of The Crown. It isn’t surprising to see her on the cover of British Vogue and I love that they didn’t go for something that mimics her Queen styling. Instead opting for a stunning and simple Christian Siriano gown. Green makes for a striking background and Samira Wiley’s Stylist cover image is incredibly captivating. And in good news for your bank account the sweater she is wearing here is from Uniqlo with an Urban Outfitters turtleneck below.

And for more turtleneck inspiration; check out my Outlander knitwear inspiration piece.
