Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Jun

The theme of this week’s “Out of the Box” is fun with a whole lot of whimsical patterns across various public appearances. The pre-Emmy nomination campaigning is now on the quieter side, but there is still plenty going on including several premieres and more magazine delights on the back of last week’s bumper rundown.

In exciting news, I have a piece over at Elle about Wonder Woman, glasses and makeover montages in movies. Check that out here.Preacher returns Sunday (June 25) and I’m really excited to have Ruth Negga as Tulip back on TV. Tulip was one of the best dressed new characters of 2016 and as any regular reader will be aware, Ruth Negga crushed it on the most recent film awards circuit.

This pattern continues at the Preacher premiere with Negga in a tricky Chanel feathered, beaded and tulle frock; she’s making this whole fashion thing look so easy.In more magical fashion unicorn news; the new Spider-Man promo tour continues and at the Barcelona photocall Zendaya looks effortlessly cool in a Delpozo ensemble that has a lot going on.

Flamingos are super prevalent right now as everyone wants to put a bird on it; from clothes to every single piece of summer homeware I’ve seen recently and yet this top looks like none of the items I have seen. Also those pants would look terrible on me, but I want them.

Zendaya is great and if you haven’t read her Vogue cover story yet then I would definitely recommend. The Big Sick is on my most anticipated summer movie list and at the New York premiere Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon look fabulous while promoting the film they wrote together. Emily gives great lipstick and pattern, which are pretty much two of my favorite things.Keeping with the lipstick/pattern theme is Kirsten Dunst in Gucci at the Build Series discussion and I have been style crushing on Dunst since I was a teen. Dunst has been hitting all the style notes throughout The Beguiled press tour from Cannes ball gowns to airport attire. Sofia Coppola looks classic and also pajama adjacent in those pants, which I am definitely here for.

Also in Sofia Coppola news here are several pieces that I have been reading this week including Soraya Roberts doing a deep dive on the themes of Coppola’s work, Ira Madison III taking on the controversy of Coppola removing Hallie, the slave character from The Beguiled, Inkoo Kang discussing Coppola’s problematic portrayal (and erasure) of racial elements in films such as Lost in Translation and The Bling Ring and Kristen Yoonsoo Kim’s interview with Coppola.Bonus Kirsten Dunst does fabulous casual style and even though I have already given these very ’70s jeans a shout out, they deserve another.

One more thing from The Beguiled press tour with a bonus Jesse Plemons mention on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Also Fargo season 2 really is the best TV Fargo. In amazing cover news; Mahershala Ali dominated my Twitter feed on Tuesday when GQ released these stunning images and his smile is pure delight. As is the rest of the photoshoot (yes I want this AMI Alexandre Mattiussi sweatshirt).

And the piece that accompanies the super summery fashion editorial is both thoughtful and thought provoking. It is an incredible profile by Carvell Wallace that reflects on a range of topics including the current political climate:

“I think African-Americans have a very convoluted relationship with patriotism. The fact is, we essentially were the abused child. We still love the parent, but you can’t overlook the fact that we have a very convoluted relationship with the parent. I absolutely love this country, but like so many people have some real questions and concerns about how things have gone down over the years and where we’re at. And that’s from a place of love, because I want the country to be what it says it is on paper.”

It is an in-depth interview covering Ali’s childhood, religion, his career and fame. It is one of the best profiles of the year and Carvell Wallace makes this so much more than your bog standard actor puff piece.
