Best of the Emmys 2017 Style: Bold Color and Shimmer

Welcome to the second part of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Emmy coverage and this is brought to you on four hours sleep and a whole lot of Diet Coke (#notspon).

For all things awards, couples, feathers and more head here. In this post we will be lavishing praise on the colorful and metallic looks of the night. AKA my favorite kind of award show sartorial choices.Pleats make for the best all drama posing and Tessa Thompson in rainbow Rosie Assoulin is quite possibly the best look of the entire night. There’s a bonus ’70s feeling about all of this and I am so ready for the Thor press tour.Viola Davis always gives great vibrant color—it was pink in 2016—and this year’s Emmys are no different. A tangerine dream in custom Zac Posen. One of the show highlights was Tituss Burgess in the Westworld sketch and also this jacket is beyond fantastic.Again the Stranger Things teens continue to show most the adult dudes how it is done; wearing designers from Prada to Ted Baker and Balmain. Getting the edge in the best dressed here is Caleb McLaughlin in a purple brocade Garçon Couture jacket. Nicole Kidman won big on the night in more ways than one as she picked up for Best Actress in a mini-series and as producer on Big Little Lies. She was also wearing maybe her best look of a very busy 2017 in red Calvin Klein by Appointment. Also favoring crimson is Issa Rae in custom Vera Wang; I’m not wild about the sleeves but from the back this dress is divine.If you are a regular watched of Gina Rodriguez’s Instagram Stories then you have probably seen her use a pull up bar on her door frame. It took her a few attempts, but she can now work it like a pro and she even did so in this super sexy Naeem Khan frock. And along with Busy Philipps, she very much makes me want to exercise more.Yara Shahidi once again does something different and you can never predict what red carpet direction she will opt for. This time she goes ethereal in Prada.Last year Sarah Paulson wowed in green sequined Prada and she’s gone the sparkly route again in Carolina Herrera. It doesn’t quite deliver the same knockout levels, but I do love the drama of the puffed out sleeves. For my fave silver sequins of the night look no further than Anna Chlumsky in custom Sachin & Babi.

Chlumsky also gave the best reaction to the worst moment and her very ’90s styling on Halt and Catch Fire is every level flashback inducing.Mixing florals and metallics is Queen Regina King in a plunging Galia Lahav Couture gown and those DVANI diamond starburst earrings are making me wish I had pierced ears.Another flaming hot Naeem Khan dress and Laverne Cox is a dripped in silver delight.Kiernan Shipka has been coming to the Emmys since 2010 and this is an instant way to feel old—as pointed out with this helpful visual from Jarett Wieselmen. This Miu Miu gown is simple, elegant and very pretty.Another teen hitting all the right sartorial notes is Millie Bobby Brown in Calvin Klein by Appointment. This gives off a princess vibe without feeling too saccharine.Millennial pink for Samira Wiley in custom Christian Siriano and I love the cut of this gown.Another very different ladysuit from Evan Rachel Wood in striking wide-legged Jeremy Scott for Moschino. She looks like a fabulous ringmaster.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

This has been quite the week and not in the way I normally open “Out of the Box” with a list of what has been going on in the sartorial world of TV, magazines and red carpets. Writing about the frivolities of fashion when such horrific events are going on can feel futile and pointless; having a respite while staying informed about the big picture can also be helpful.

So here are some of the style highlights from this week including the Teen Choices Awards, more magazine covers and Emmy FYC events.Zendaya in formal pajamas at the Teen Choice Awards is pretty much perfect and Ashish menswear pajamas at that. Looking effortlessly cool and this is the perfect event to mix things up on the red (blue) carpet.

A big shout out to Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach, for yet another solid outfit choice.From formal bedwear to formal track pants and again this is the ideal award show to switch out the usual frock for something slightly more fun. Yara Shahidi mixes athleisure with a sparkly top, heels and a Fear of God jacket and looks fabulous. Much to my delight the Emmy FYC campaign events continue because I love all things about the awards season circus. Especially when you get IRL besties Sterling K. Brown and Brian Tyree Henry getting to hangout on the red carpet, as the This is Us push continues.Another big drama contender is The Handmaid’s Tale and they are also out in force with their Emmy campaign. Cast members Samira Wiley, Elisabeth Moss, Ann Dowd and Alexis Bledel are joined by director Reed Morano and they are crushing it with their panel attire. Prints, pussy bow blouses, pants and killer red dresses are all winners.Amandla Stenberg’s 2016 Teen Vogue cover was one of my favorites from last year and her September issue appearance is another hit. This is such a good mix of textures and the direct gaze is once again full of self-assured confidence.

The interview is conducted by another TV Ate My Wardrobe fave, Janelle Monáe and they talk about her new project Everything Everything, the current volatile political climate and why Stenberg has ditched her iPhone for an old school flip phone as a way to disconnect and preserve her mental health.More from Teen Vogue and Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown giving great pattern clashing (with some more stripes to covet here). Brown is interviewed by former child star Drew Barrymore and they talk about the E.T. comparisons and working in this industry at such a young age.For Mr Porter, Justin Theroux gets to look moody in denim and knits. Pretty much the ideal fall fashion combo and he’s still rocking the Kevin Garvey beard.

He also gives good career that also doubles as life advice, “The key to continuing to work is don’t be a jerk. Because you’re infinitely replaceable.” And this excellent romantic nugget “Why would a man be intimidated by a funny woman? In a perfect world, a relationship is two people laughing together.”

Speak Singing the Spice Girls with Nicole Kidman, Riz Ahmed, Keri Russell and More

The August issue of W Magazine features a portfolio of some of the hottest stars from recent and forthcoming TV shows including Riz Ahmed, Nicole Kidman, Keri Russell, Claire Foy, Millie Bobby Brown and Milo Ventimiglia. So far they have released several video interviews from the various profiles that you can see below and today W delivers this Spice Girls themed ‘Lyric Improv’ delight. This is in a similar vein to the Clueless speech version from film award season.

To give some context and to make you feel as old as I do right now, the song “Wannabe” was released in 1996 and Millie Bobby Brown was not born until 2004. I remember being at a friend’s 13th birthday sleepover just after this song had come out as we danced around her garden singing this song before settling down to the mandatory horror movie selection (that night included Candy Man and I still won’t say his name into the mirror). We were mostly into indie music (see anything Britpop/grunge), but on this night we let those pretenses drop and enjoyed this now pop music classic.

So yeah, now I’m feeling old and also this is why Claire Foy’s little bit in this video really speaks to me. Nicole Kidman has gone for an interesting choice of seductive tones for this song.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

The SAG Awards delivered on both speeches and fashion this weekend and on this week’s “Out of the Box” we’ve got a whole lot of great outfits from the Entertainment Weekly pre-SAG party with a dash of the PGA Awards, the beginning of the end for Girls, a new campaign and a very important announcement.Yara Shahidi was our best dressed at the SAG Awards in an incredible striped Naeem Khan frock and at the pre-SAG EW party she went in a very different, but just as fun direction. All baby blues from eye makeup to the abstract print matching Sophie Theallet shirt and pants.For all things wacky and delightful look no further than Kristen Schaal and her amazing kitty dress. I love everything about this. Also super cute gold shoes that I would like in my life.Malin Akerman serving up full shoulder drama in metallic striped Zhivago and this is the kind of dress you wear when you want to throw a drink in someone’s face. Or just look cool as fuck.Patterned ladysuit alert with Grace Byers going full plunge in Keti Chkhikvadze and in very cute dress news we have Candice Patton in Tommy Hilfiger. That collar is everything (and now I am looking at dresses on the Tommy Hilfiger website and am very tempted by this).While I very much preferred both Vanessa Kirby and Claire Foy’s SAG ceremony outfits, I also couldn’t pass up this opportunity to post this picture of a much happier (and more alive in some cases) family from The Crown. Lipstick points for Kirby and Foy too.The Stranger Things cast tends to be split between the kids and the teens when posing for photos; here at the EW party Natalia Dyer instead hangs with her onscreen younger brother and his friends and once again the boys look super swish in their suits. Especially Caleb McLaughlin in bow tie and waistcoat. Dyer’s super floral mini is another very cute Miu Miu and this brand is working like a charm on her.Dancing cuties and Stranger Things meets Black-ish. Blue shoes are a must at the pre-SAG party for Caleb McLaughlin and Miles Brown.More fabulous shoes and moves from the boys at a SAG after party and they’re joined by Janelle Monàe.And now with Samira Wiley and the rest of the Stranger Things kids. Post awards dancing photos are the best.The night before the SAGs Rami Malek went a little more classic in his choice of Dior suit and he also appears to have adopted the signature Eddie Redmayne lean.Going full Friends cast shot as The Hollywood Reporter celebrates Girls with an oral history and a cover featuring the core cast. This is a really well styled shoot and I now have Lost in Translation like questions as I wonder what Adam Driver is whispering into Andrew Rannells’ ear. Kenzo’s new Spring 2017 campaign features Tracee Ellis Ross, Jesse Williams and cellist/singer Kelsey Lu. A short film called “Music is My Mistress” will be released next Thursday (February 9) and if these print ads are any indication it is going to be pretty special.And in other fantastic campaign news; here is Yara Shahidi for Ivy Park and this oversized sweater/short shorts look is great. Shahidi appeared in Lemonade and re-teaming with Beyoncé for her clothing brand makes so much sense.

Best of the 2017 SAG Red Carpet: Suits, Velvet and More

Now for part 2 of the TV Ate My Wardrobe SAG coverage. For speech highlights and all things that sparkle head here. On the menu we have plenty of suits, a whole lot velvet, the kids from Stranger Things and some classic style. Maisie Williams looks like a 1940s movie starlet in a light pink satin Charlie Brear dress and now I want to see her in something set in this period.

Also, thanks to Racked for this lipstick post which includes details of how to get Maisie (and Evan Rachel Wood’s) killer lip color. More ladysuit goodness from Evan Rachel Wood and this time she has opted for a midnight blue double-breasted velvet by Altuzarra. This kicks off the big velvet trend of the night and I am all for this material making a comeback.Queen Judith Light also taking in the blue velvet (*cue song*) and crushing it in Tom Ford.Newly engaged Kirsten Dunst (sadly no Jesse Plemons on the red carpet) looks like she might have wedding dresses on her mind and this Dior would work down the aisle, but isn’t so bridal that it is out of place here. The combination of the statement necklaces and metallic straps works like a charm.Sarah Paulson has been all about the sparkles of late, but for the SAG awards she went classic in a black strapless Vera Wang dress and an amazing ivory cape. Red lipstick and big earrings are the way to go here.

I mentioned it in the first post already and yet it is worth repeating that in Sarah Paulson’s speech she mentioned donating to the ACLU and you can do that here.Another speech I highlighted in part 1 of this SAG coverage was Mahershala Ali’s, which is both emotional and important. Ali continues his super suave domination and this time he wears a Ermenegildo Zegna Couture white tuxedo.More velvet and all the swoons because Michiel Huisman.An Ilaria Urbinati double bill coming your way and first up Rami Malek in a Dior suit that stands out and works because he is Rami Malek.A touch of velvet is sometimes all you need as Riz Ahmed shows with the lapels on his Zegna tux.For delightfully classic in his tuxedo choice there is Glenn Powell.The most overt political statement on the SAG red carpet came from Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg and wife Jocelyn Towne who wore her feelings across her chest. Kudos to them for not keeping quiet and using this very public opportunity to demonstrate. It feels weird to bring fashion into this moment, but Helberg is also doing the velvet thing and it looks great on him. Leopard print ladysuit! And Amy Landecker wasn’t the only person wearing this bold St John number and leopard continues to dominate. More blue velvet too from the Transparent cast and Alexandra Billings’ feather touch is fabulous. Oh hey Jay, you look lovely too.Barb got to come play! Stranger Things teens (well one of them is still a teen in this case – looking at you Shannon Purser) and the height of Joe Keery’s hair is maybe bigger than Jean Ralphio’s and I don’t know how that is possible. Natalia Dyer’s custom Miu Miu is both delicate and bold and I love that Shannon Purser has gone full black gown and red lip.Stranger Things kids continue to have the most fun and somehow it is still super charming. They’re also still some of the best dressed people on the red carpet in brands that are affordable (see Finn Wolfhard’s teal Topman suit) and on the splurge end with Millie Bobby Brown in red Armani.

Best of the Pre-Golden Globes: The AFI Awards and BAFTA Tea Party

Before the main event and all the fancy gowns tonight there are the pre-Golden Globes parties and other awards. Plenty of pattern, color and interesting looks from a lot of the nominees you will be seeing walk the red carpet later.It took me a moment to realize this is Claire Foy because I’ve got used to her Elizabeth hair and styling on The Crown in which she looks a good five years older than she does here. The weight of the crown and all that.

Love this pattern clashing with a hint of polka dot at the AFI Awards and I have a feeling she will be picking up the Golden Globe tonight. Which I will be more than happy with even if my heart lies with Keri Russell.Another fun mix of texture and print with Stranger Things’ Natalia Dyer in this fun floral number. And expect a major hair changes in Stranger Things season 2 as they get on the wig train. Naomie Harris falls into the Magical Fashion Unicorn territory (see also her outfit from the BAFTA event below) and a yellow double breasted sleeveless coat dress might be a hard look to pull off. But Harris does just that and this Phillip Lim Spring 2017 works like a charm paired with black pants. Looking forward to seeing Harris on the red carpet tonight.Donald Glover has the patterned shirt paired with a suit/no tie casual cool thing down and I can even get on board the no socks things with him.Once again going super suave look is Moonlight’s Mahershala Ali and the red polka dot pocket square is an excellent accessory choice.Thanks Jarett Wieselman for pointing out that Entertainment Tonight’s Instagram referred to this AFI Awards look as “No one rocks the dapper werewolf in a turtleneck aesthetic quite like Chris Pine.” There’s nothing more to add to this A+ observation and also can someone make this movie? Please and thank you. I am a big fan of the suits that aren’t black/brown/navy/grey and Riz Ahmed is a dream in burgundy.Moving on to the BAFTA LA Tea Party and it comes as no shock that I am madly in love with Emma Stone in this very ’70s looking DVF polka dot halter dress. The long brown suede Brock Collection resort coat Stone wore on top is only adding to these very strong feelings.More floral pattern delights from one of the women crushing award season and Ruth Negga’s The Vampire’s Wife frock is another winner. Excellent shoe and lipstick color too that is somehow matchy matchy without giving me a headache.More Magical Fashion Unicorn from Naomie Harris in a dress that could threaten to be overpowering. This is an exceptional Thom Browne embroidered number showing there are many ways to do botanicals. Also bonus points for the non-boring/non-beige Christian Louboutin pumps.Maisie Williams wears a very cute gingham frock by Holly Fulton and she continues to light up any red carpet.Also in the very cute category is Millie Bobby Brown and she continues to walk the sophisticated and age appropriate line; this time in a simple Kate Spade New York with a bow on the back.More Louis Vuitton for Michelle Williams and this pink shift dress is part of the cute section for a reason. It could boarder on too saccharine, but these fantastic gold shoes offset the sweetness. Caitriona Balfe can wear extravagant gowns from any period and also kill it in the simplest black Ferragamo number. Another one to watch tonight.More on the black dress front and Amy Adams looks classic in Dolce and Gabbana. LadySuit Watch 2017 gets off to a great start with the effortlessly cool Isabelle Huppert in red.Oh, hello. All the Diego Luna swoons.

More burgundy delights and Tom Hiddleston is not one to shy away from a suit with a punch; this time super stylist Ilaria Urbinati has put him in double breasted Gucci.

Best of the 2016 Emmys: Shimmer, Black and White

Continuing our Emmy style rundown and this second bumper post gives great sparkle. Plus the many different interpretations of how to wear black and white on the red carpet.Getting 70s disco vibes from Constance Wu in J. Mendel and after Sarah Paulson’s Prada, this is my favorite look of the night.Judith fucking Light. Always amazing. No exceptions. Orange is the New Black was pretty much shutout this year, but Laverne Cox is giving statuette realness is Naeem Khan.Claire Danes might want to tone down the tan/bronzer, but her Schiaparelli super sparkly number is a stunner.Taraji P. Henson changed it all up for presenting and I think I like this look even more than the yellow dress. Sequins and that hairstyle continue the nod to the 70s.The Stranger Things kids are adorable and need to be protected at all costs. Also continuing the trend of dressing better than a lot of adults, particularly in the tux department (see also Jacob Tremblay). Millie Bobby Brown put a bird on it in Red Valentino and this is the perfect brand for her.A very romantic looking Zuhair Murad floral gown for Kristen Bell and this is giving me all the heart eyes.Another knockout choice from Yara Shahidi and a Clara Rotescu dress that also gave great twirl/floating style.Everything about Tracee Ellis in this pose and Ralph Lauren dress is incredibly regal. The Americans sadly didn’t win, but Holly Taylor combines great sparkle with white in custom Theia Couture. Rami Malek in a white Dior tux jacket is showing why he was on our most anticipated list.Rami’s not the only one crushing the white tux jacket look and Tituss Burgess also came with a strong shoe and bow tie game.A sheer frock I don’t hate! Sophie Turner delivers a miracle in Valentino.And even more sheer that I like! Julia Louis-Dreyfus gave a heart crushing speech as her dad passed away on Friday, which left me pretty much sobbing into my wine.Sequins really were the big style winner of the night and America Ferrera’s Jenny Packham frock is another evening high point.Kerry Washington is never boring on the red carpet and she’s wearing a show stopping Brandon Maxwell number coupled with hair that takes me back to Olivia Pope hanging out on a tropical beach.

Best of the Pre-Emmy Parties: Vanity Fair and BAFTA

More pre-Emmy gaming at the Vanity Fair and FX party with a whole host of TV Ate My Wardrobe faves and this party also showcases just how good FX is at the moment. Plus the annual BAFTA LA Tea Party, which always delivers on the daytime shindig attire.Got to kick off with the show that dominates a lot of costume chat in these parts; Keri Russell always brings the casual glam to events like this and for this occasion Matthew Rhys has dialed back on the hiatus beard grizzle with a trim. Nice color suit too and I am looking forward to seeing more of this IRL couple tonight.And this is several shades of adorable from the Americans kids and Keidrich Sellati’s turtleneck/blazer combo is levels of spy and casual attire that his TV dad would wear. Delightful is the word I would use to describe this photo with the cast of American Crime Story giving off all the good vibes. Excellent lipstick choice from Sarah Paulson too.
This Vanity Fair/FX party is just a long list of feelings pretty much; including this Friday Night Lights reunion. Tami and Lance feeeeeeelings. Donald Glover keeps the same shirt and changes the suit and still looks just as good as the day before.Angela Bassett always looks incredible and this is no exception. Now to the BAFTA LA Tea Party and there are a lot of super cute patterned dresses to scroll through including Maisie Williams in a very fun House of Holland number, which pairs really well with Tatiana Maslany’s also starry patchwork Coach frock. Going slightly more pattern delicate is Yara Shahidi in an ethereal Tommy Hilfiger dress and another stunner from the Black-ish star.A few days ago I mentioned some red carpet similarities between Millie Bobby Brown and Kiernan Shipka; this look continues this notion and while I’m not a fan of the term ‘age appropriate’ (as it can sound quite stuffy) this is exactly that. Good choice of flats too.Transparent’s Melora Hardin also has the right idea for a frock that bridges the summer/fall gap especially when it is still this warm.A different spin on print and Alison Wright’s Stella McCartney jumpsuit (the top version has been worn by Cookie on Empire) is a fun take on daytime party attire.Polka dots and pink at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, zebra print and yellow at the BAFTA Tea Party; RuPaul crushes it in color and print every single time.

NYFW Coach 1941: Stranger Things and T-Rex Sweaters

A quick New York Fashion Week check-in because this Stranger Things front row pairing deserves a post of their own especially as the sweater I have long been coveting makes an appearance.

Winona Ryder was joined by co-star Millie Bobby Brown at the Coach 1941 Women’s Spring 2017 show and this is making me want more of them together when Stranger Things returns for season 2.There’s a lot of affection here and as with Kiernan Shipka before her I am already aware that Millie Bobby is way cooler than I ever was at such a young age (and am now). Winona is always the coolest.

Now to the T-Rex sweater and this is a variation of one we featured in a Fantasy Costuming post this time last year after the Coach show (for Gina on Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Out of the Box: Look of the Week

One of the busiest months of the year in terms of TV and fashion is here so this week’s “Out of the Box” is a fun mix of film festival attire, talk shows and magazine editorials. While I’m on the subject of September and how busy it is you can now also sign up to my weekly newsletter here. The first one is all about this time of year and is an extension of everything TV Ate My Wardrobe.Emma Stone at the Venice Film Festival wearing a delightful floral Giambattista Valli, which is an ideal daytime photocall outfit for La La Land. Paired with suede ochre heels gives this a late 70s feel that I am – in non-shocking news – in love with. I am very excited about this movie and the costume design is already giving me all the heart eyes.Giving off casual cool at Jimmy Kimmel Live! is Zooey Deschanel and I’ve been after a good pair of denim dungarees. To me they are jumpsuit adjacent in that I don’t own a pair and they give me the same clothing related bathroom fears.

On the show Deschanel also looked great in a black ensemble paired with some super sparkly amazing flats and a collar that ticks all the boxes. Plus she talked about how much her daughter loves cheese, her TV directorial debut and the New Girl crossover with Brooklyn Nine-Nine.Interview Magazine continues to deliver on great photoshoots and interviews – well I guess it is the title of the magazine – and this week HTGAWM’s Aja Naomi King chats with OITNB’s Danielle Brooks about their classic training, TV and King’s role in The Birth of a Nation. Also working with Viola Davis sounds as incredible as you probably imagined it would be.

“She brings you in, and it feels like family. When you’re in that kind of family environment, when you’re tasked with doing something difficult, you can allow yourself to be brave because you know you’re surrounded by people that love you, that only want the best for you. From day one, it’s been that wonderful. I was terrified. That first scene we’re in together in the pilot, I was so scared. Here she is, being amazing in this room, and I just want her to think I’m amazing too.”Also in Interview is Aya Cash and I am thrilled You’re the Worst is back for a third season. The premiere episode is really great, made me teary and sparked an important shower related debate. As with the Aja Naomi King picture Aya Cash nails the disarming black and white shot in stunning fashion.

In the interview Cash discusses how Stephen Falk had to fight for her to get the part of Gretchen, audition rejections, the doors You’re the Worst has opened and what she’d be doing if she wasn’t acting. This also has me very excited:

“I’m starting to produce. I’m developing a project for myself based on one of my mom’s books. I really don’t have a specific idea of where I want my career to go, I just have an idea of wanting to continue to work and work on things that I like and think are good. I don’t need to be crazy rich and crazy famous. I would just like to keep going.”This all-Prada ensemble shot is also fantastic and I couldn’t pick between the two. For more from this Interview shoot head here.Chunky knit season is upon us and upstate New York is the place for these late summer shoots as The Edit shows with this fantastic Rachel Weisz spread. This turtleneck sweater is perhaps a tad outside my budget and it is still too warm for such garments, but I can dream.Stranger Things is one of the undeniable hits of the summer and part of the reason for its success and resonance is the kids at the center of the story. Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo all appeared on The Tonight Show this week timed perfectly for the season 2 pickup announcement. Style wise it has been a lot of Winona (for good reason) on here, but the kids dominated this piece I wrote.

And in real life they are pretty adorable and charming. Outfit wise they are all perfect and Millie Bobby Brown’s dress and flats are super cute. Points for all. Plus she crushes Nicki Minaj’s “Monster” verse.
