Best of the 2018 Oscars Red Carpet: Metallics and Neutrals

5 Mar

Welcome! To the second part of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Oscar coverage. This post has a whole lot of sparkle, white frocks, ladysuit tails and more.

For Part 1 head here.Wakanda Forever! Lupita Nyong’o wore a lot of armor inspired looks during the Black Panther press tour and this gold sequin Atelier Versace is serving up red carpet warrior to new levels. Danai Gurira wears soft blush Gabriela Hearst with a fierce edge thanks to the silver detail on her shaved head. Adding a touch of African heritage with a scarf is Winston Duke, wearing a fabulous Etro ensemble.

I really hope Black Panther will get honored at the 91st Academy Awards.A dress that shimmers and shimmies is the dream; Gal Gadot has the perfect Givenchy couture gown.I was thrilled to see Gina Rodriguez presenting and she had the gown to match in Zuhair Murad.Sally Hawkins does whimsical delight in The Shape ff Water and IRL in a sequin Armani Prive gown.More cape and ladysuit excellence from Sarah Broom and Dee Rees with Rees going all in wearing tales. I am also in awe of her shoes. Keeping it classic in white Calvin Klein by Appointment. Laura Dern now gets the great honor of once again being my lock screen image as I couldn’t not make the Dern/Gerwig pairing anything but that. Now for something completely different with a dash of leather daddy on the red carpet.

Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon took the cold shoulder trend in an unexpected direction in a cropped Jeremy Scott for Moschino jacket, leather harness and patent leather bow-tie.I saw Lady Bird for a second time yesterday and Beanie Feldstein steals every scene she is in. And she looks wonderful in ombré Sachin and Babi. The detail looks like roots from a magical tree. Perfect movie prom frock. There were a number of stand out white frocks yesterday, including Janet Mock in stunning caped Christian Siriano. Team Get Out looked pretty damn good and Lakeith Stanfield was my favorite guy in blue wearing Ermenegildo Zegna Couture.Jane Fonda mentioned that the Oscar set was reminiscent of Barbarella, she’s also serving so much sci-fi shoulders in custom Balmain. Oscar Isaac recently discussed the reasons why he decided to marry long-time girlfriend Elvira Lind and the pair look cool af at the Academy Awards. Her dress has a whole Scandinavian vibe and he looks totally fine with his wife being taller than him in heels. Last year Mahershala Ali was one of the best dressed award season contenders. And he continues this streak. It is like he invented the velvet jacket in Berluti.Couple faves Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani go super classic formal; Kumail ditches the pattern for the Bond look in Ermenegildo Zegna and Emily is a tulle queen in J. Mendel. The rest of the party pictures will be up on here later in the week, but I couldn’t not include Emily’s incredible change from sweet to caped snake charmer. It would probably be much easier to go around than climb over the seats, but I’m honestly a bit impressed that Jennifer Lawrence manages this in a fancy Dior gown I actually like AND with a glass of wine in her hand. No falling over this time. And for that she gets the final picture of this post.

2017 Costume Designers Guild Awards Winners and Red Carpet

22 Feb

Celebrating all things costume design at the 19th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards last night in LA at the Beverly Hilton with accolades getting handed out to the best in television, film and short form.

These awards are split into contemporary, fantasy and period, which means that a wide range of work is acknowledged as opposed to say the Academy Awards which tends to lean towards the more period costuming when it comes to which projects are nominated.

The award season juggernaut that is La La Land is one of the rare non-period contenders – it isn’t always period as Jenny Beavan won for Mad Max last year – and it also won last night. And for fantasy it was all about Doctor Strange.

Two of my favorite overall contenders this award season are Hidden Figures and Jackie; both were in the period category and while Madeline Fontaine recently won the BAFTA for her incredible work on Jackie it was Renee Ehrlich Kalfus who was honored by the Costume Designers Guild for her take on the early 1960s.

On the TV side there were some repeat winners with Game of Thrones and American Horror Story taking home the fantasy and contemporary accolades. The Crown’s debut season receiving the period award and the work on all three of these projects is incredible.

The red carpet was also awash with fabulous outfits from designers and those there to celebrate with them. This included some of the actors they dress on a daily basis and I want to take a moment to shine the sartorial light on both.michele-claptonThis is now the third win for Michele Clapton and Game of Thrones (sharing this award with April Ferry this year) as this show continues to dominate all things fantasy. Clapton was behind the incredible Cersei revenge ensemble and she will be returning to Westeros full time this season. This means she has to depart her other winning project and Clapton also won for The Crown last night; I particularly love all things Margaret on The Crown.

Clapton’s geometric patterned gown is a big departure from either GoT or The Crown, but there is a hint of Daenerys with her choice of choker. Plus those all important pockets tick all those boxes.hala-bahmetHala Bahmet is currently working on This is Us and she is responsible for making me want to dress like Mandy Moore in the late ’70s/early ’80s. Here she is giving great black frock and accessories.helen-huang-and-lou-eyrichThis is now Lou Eyrich’s fourth win for American Horror Story and this year she shares this with Helen Huang. I don’t always make it through a whole season of AHS (I’ve only seen Coven and Hotel in their entirety), but the costuming is always next level. As Ryan Murphy’s main costume collaborator it is no surprise to see Eyrich working on Feud and the promo shots from this mini-series are already making me drool all over the keyboard in anticipation.

Eyrich delivers on the dramatic here in a fabulous green ladysuit, oversized glasses and earrings, whereas Helen Huang is going more classic all in black. ane-crabtree-and-jimmi-simpsonAne Crabtree looks like a host from the future in a Westworld park that has yet to be made and I love the high collar detail coupled with the texture and pattern of this frock. And Jimmi Simpson has left the hat at home, but scrubs up well.lily-collinsAt first I thought this was Valentino, but instead it is Alexander McQueen and it is just as intricately beautiful on Lily Collins.amy-landeckerAmy Landecker in another fabulous ladysuit and she injects even more color by pairing it with yellow pumps. Love this entire ensemble.matt-bomerHello, handsome. Matt Bomer serving up a classic look in a white tuxedo jacket as he presents the Lacoste Spotlight Award to his Last Tycoon co-star Lily Collins.mandy-moore-cdgaHost Mandy Moore in red Jenny Packham and also as the human version of the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ kaomoji.

The dress looks really great in this posing in the hotel Instagram shot.octavia-spencer-renee-ehrlich-kalfus-jane-fondaOctavia Spencer with her Hidden Figures costume designer Renee Ehrlich Kalfus and among the many things I was raving about when I came out of this movie was the costume design and this win pleases me immensely.

The composition of this shot is great with Jane Fonda looking on and the image from Hidden Figures showcasing this costume excellence in celebratory poses.

More from the classic black attire category from both Octavia Spencer and Renee Ehrlich Kalfus. mamie-gummer-and-meryl-streepMeryl Streep was presented with the Distinguished Collaborator Award and she wore hot pink Valentino to accept this honor. Daughter Mamie Gummer’s short blonde messy bob and glasses is everything I want right now.lily-tomlin-and-jane-fondaJane Fonda not only delivers on dramatic shoulder in Versace, but she is also serving dramatic face with co-star Lily Tomlin. This photo makes me so happy.

Best of the 2016 TCA Awards Style

8 Aug

The 2016 TCA Awards (not to be confused with the Teen Choice Awards) took place on Saturday and it is one awards show where the attendees know they have won* and that aren’t televised. They also don’t separate the acting awards by gender and ladies won big this year with Sarah Paulson and Rachel Bloom taking home the drama and comedy accolades. American Crime Story was the big winner of the night and The Americans received Best Drama for the second year in a row. For a full list of winners head here.

Sidenote – I also can’t help but think of this episode of The Comeback when it comes to award shows where the recipient knows they have won.

Check out our style highlights from the event below.Mr Robot and CubaThe Mr Robot cast continue their best dressed domination with Christian Slater and Rami Malek crushing their suit choices (as per usual). Malek’s penchant for color instantly makes him standout. Portia Doubleday and Carly Chaikin’s excellent dress picks continue with pleats and a super sexy black number; they are high on the Emmy red carpet anticipation list. Oh hey there Cuba Gooding Jr. Stephanie CorneliussenMore royal blue pleats from a Mr Robot cast member and this time with one of my other favorite things; sequins. Stephanie Corneliussen also happened to be a TCA panel style highlight last week.Sarah Paulson and Holland TaylorThere’s a lot of sheer/net curtain elements to this dress and much like this Philosophy frock Sarah Paulson wore a few months ago I am somewhat on the fence; however she wears it incredibly well and the shorter hairstyle continues to be the best. Also got some strong #RelationshipGoals going on as Paulson poses with girlfriend Holland Taylor.Holly TaylorIt was a busy week for Americans stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys and they didn’t make the awards (it looks like Matthew Rhys was shooting Girls), but the rest of the cast looked amazing with Holly Taylor in a sparkly Marc Bouwer frock. Bonus lipstick points.Alison Wright and Keidrich SellatiWhoa! Keidrich Sellati who plays Henry Jennings sure looks tall/scrubs up well and is finally out from behind the computer screen. Pockets and florals, plus gold shoes equals a fantastic look from Alison Wright. Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKennaI love how genuinely thrilled Rachel Bloom looks at events like this and the red/white coordinating with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna is striking. Jane Fonda and Lily TomlinAll the feelings and a good way to start the week with a hug from Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Amazing Outfits Aplenty at the Variety Emmy Studio

31 Mar

Award season has only just wrapped up, but there is another coming in a few months time and the Emmy chatter hum is already starting. The red carpet is part of why I adore award season, the other is all the pre-gaming with endless roundtables and GoldDerby one-on-one interviews. The actual winners and ceremony is far down the list and this is reserved for mostly outrage at the omissions.

Variety host an annual Emmy studio and while they have favored panels in the past (and they might still go down this route) over the weekend a variety of comedy and drama stars from network, cable and streaming platforms interviewed each other. While these videos aren’t available to watch just yet – I will definitely be discussing/posting those when they do – we can see what everyone was wearing and it is safe to say they ladies are killing it.

Don, Claire, Lizzy, AllisonA Showtime foursome (although Allison Janney is there for Mom) with Don Cheadle, Claire Danes, Lizzy Caplan and Allison Janney. Claire Danes is wearing a fabulous check Erdem frock complete with the requisite pocketed goodness. Caplan’s lipstick game is strong with Janney’s glasses earn best accessory. And like most of the dudes at this thing Cheadle looks good, but in pretty standard attire.

Variety panel - Fred, Abbi, Ilana, CarrieThere is a lot of “Yas Kween!” about this photo from Abbi Jacobson’s floral and leather jacket combo, the crop top/necklace pairing Ilana Glazer has opted for and Carrie Brownstein’s pink lipstick and tuxedo jacket. You look fine too, Fred.

Maggie and LievReally excited to see Maggie Gyllenhaal taking part and talking The Honourable Woman as it was one of my favorite performances of last year. And Gyllenhaal is looking lovely in print with Liev Schreiber getting a whole lot of stripe sock points.

Jessica and TaylorI love how giddy Taylor Schilling looks next to Jessica Lange while her all black ensemble with leather pants is exudes cool.

Jane and ViolaMajor style and legend status at play here with Jane Fonda and Viola Davis; this is one chat I can’t wait to see.

Jeffrey Tambor and JLDAnd I really want to know what’s going on in this photo to make Jeffery Tambor look so concerned. Orange is a really great color on Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Director Variety chatThrilled there’s going to be an all women director’s discussion with Gail Mancuso, Jill Soloway, Lisa Cholodenko, Lesli Linka Glatter (director of Now and Then! Plus a whole lot of TV faves) and Michelle MacLaren. This will be another ‘soon as the video goes up I will post it on here’ situation. Ace floral and stripe top from Jill Soloway.

Uzo and Gina VarietyWell, this is just the best and there is so much joy to be had from Gina Rodriguez and Uzo Aduba taking a selfie together. Both women are in A+ dresses and that color on Aduba is everything.

Kerry Washington VarietyLove Kerry Washington in Giambattista Valli pattern clashing polka dot/floral frock and that she’s gone for a colorful pair of lace pumps.

Taraji and MindyAnother selfie and amazing outfit duo with Mindy Kaling and Taraji P. Henson. Vibrant yellow on Henson is stunning and Kaling’s matching skirt and top is super pretty.

Julianna MarguliesSticking to a designer favorite is Julianna Margulies in Narciso Rodriguez and this classic monochromatic take is really working for The Good Wife star.

Best of the Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet: Lady in Red

12 Jan

Continuing the Golden Globes all the pretty dresses rundown and moving on from shimmer with a look at one of the big color trends of the night; red on the red carpet.

Viola Davis GGRed lipstick and gown excellence from Viola Davis wearing Donna Karan Atelier with a touch of embellishments to add some glitz to an already stunning frock.

Taylor SchillingFor pure red no fuss Ralph Lauren is who you turn to (see Jennifer Lawrence at the 2011 Oscars) and Taylor Schilling is working this frock.

Christine BaranskiFor a darker shade here is Christine Baranski killing it in Zac Posen. Always in awe of Baranski.

Julianna MarguliesThe length of Julianna Margulies’ Ulyana Sergeenko Couture gown is super awkward and this is one that looks better before you scroll down, but there are still certain aspects that work for me.

Jane Fonda and Lily TomlinAnother best pairing of the night and if I had any choice the hosts of next year’s Golden Globes. All the prayer hands emojis for Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Allison Williams GGThis look is both very Allison Williams and not at the same time as the makeup is a little on the severe side for her and yet the Armani Privé gown is a striking combination of old Hollywood glamour and the princessy vibe she leans towards.

Bonus Viola Davis and Allison Janney in red reacting to the arrival of Prince to the stage.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week Oscar Special

7 Mar

Award season has come to a close and we’ve got one final post to look at the best looks from the annual post-Oscars Vanity Fair party. We’ve already covered the Oscar red carpet, but the real fun and japes come afterwards as everyone can finally relax and know there are no more tight fitting gowns to wear for months. Plus there’s a whole host of faces who didn’t appear at the awards and who are also letting loose, just because.

2014 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - ArrivalsEvan Rachel Wood’s emerald green Elie Saab Couture gown is simply stunning and this is my favorite look from the entire night. It’s elegant and striking and this dress paired with red lips and the short curly bob makes her look like a 1940s star.

US-ENTERTAINMENT-FILM-OSCARSThere is a lot more color on show at the VF party (the less nude metallics the better) and Leslie Mann’s gorgeous yellow Jenny Packham frock is on point. It’s got an ethereal quality that comes with this designer and the detail is in the delicate beading along the neckline. It’s really very pretty and the kind of dress I’d want to run through a meadow in, if there was a meadow nearby and it wasn’t muddy.

2014 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - ArrivalsHere is Zooey Deschanel in an Oscar de la Renta dress that comes from the same Spring 2014 collection that I suggested would be perfect for Jess in a New Girl fantasy costuming piece last year. This is the more formal version and unsurprisingly I think Deschanel is killing it and I’m a big fan of the curly hair approach; it adds a romantic quality to the look.

Amy Poehler VFHere’s another sunny floral appearance with Amy Poehler in Peter Som. The halter neck gives it a relaxed feeling without detracting from the fancy pants event and she looks fantastic.

Amy PoehlerBonus Poehler being held later at the party by an all star comedy line up including Bill Murray, Paul Rudd, Bill Hader, Adam Scott, Nick Offerman and Andy Samberg. Megan Mullally is also rocking an amazing floral gown (and grabbing a handful of Poehler at the same time).

Olivia Munn and Jane Fonda

While I’m not overly enamored by Olivia Munn’s Alexander McQueen boob harness (the rest of the dress is beautiful), I do love this shot of Munn with her Newsroom co-star Jane Fonda. Munn’s expression says all it needs to as Fonda is showing just how it’s done in Nicholas Oakwell.

2014 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - InsideKaren O and Amy Adams both feature on the best of the red carpet and this shot of them celebrating with Spike Jonze with his Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Her shows off their change of clothes for this party. Still coveting Karen O’s amazing red lipstick.

2014 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - InsideIt’s Jennifer Lawrence and Larry David (JLaw and LD if you will) and if they do any more Curb Your Enthusiasm, then this is one guest star I want to see. Lawrence also changed for this party into this super shiny mirror ball like Tom Ford, proving once again that this Dior contract is good for no-one (well maybe her bank account).
