Emmy Roundtable Season 2018 is Here!

23 May

My favorite time of the year! Yep, Emmy roundtable season. Movie award season stretches for months, well so does the TV equivalent—yes there is crossover come the Golden Globes. And end of year discussions also revolve around the best TV. But for now let’s bask in the FYC Emmy coverage, which has been going on for the last few weeks. However, the first Hollywood Reporter cover feels like the official kickoff.

The first image was released yesterday on World Goth Day, appropriately enough considering the style aesthetic. The drama actress cover tends to go in one of two ways; pastels/muted tones or black/white. Coven instead of bridesmaids (never forget this perfect Kirsten Dunst Insta). Squad goals indeed.

Fully leaning into the dark and serious palette is fine by me. Sandra Oh is the outfit MVP and Villanelle would very much approve of this look.Featured this year is Thandie Newton (Westworld), Claire Foy (The Crown), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Angela Bassett (9-1-1), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Deuce). A fantastic line-up, but my one quibble is the lack of Keri Russell considering how incredible she has been on this (and every) season of The Americans. The last time she appeared on this cover was in 2014, as this is the final season of The Americans it is shame she doesn’t get to take center stage here.

This one is always such a thoughtful, insightful conversation. The Times Up movement is something that isn’t discussed, which I found surprising considering how front and center it has been, particularly during award season. Some other weighty topics including equal pay are broached. Claire Foy found herself at the center of and you can tell it still makes her uncomfortable. As she mentions, money is not something that is often discussed in such a public way in the UK. Maggie Gyllenhaal tells the story of an important moment for her as a producer on The Deuce when she fought for an orgasm that sounded real from her character. Gyllenhaal is someone I have long admired and this make me love her even more.

Sandra Oh while mentioning her post Grey’s spell is super honest about her reaction to reading the Killing Eve script which tells you everything you need to know about what she is used to getting sent:

“You’ve talked about reading the initial pilot script for Killing Eve and scrolling through quite a bit of it before you realized you were being asked to play the central storyteller. Why do you think that is, and what did you learn from that realization?

OH That moment was a real punch in the gut for me because the internalization [that I couldn’t be seen as the lead] was really deep. I get the script, I’m on the phone with my agent, I remember exactly where I was, right by BAM in Brooklyn, and I’m going, “Scrolling, scrolling” (scans her phone). I’m just like, “I don’t know, who am I playing? What’s the part?” [My agent] goes, “Eve! You’re playing Eve.” Something happened to me in that moment where I couldn’t even see myself [as the central character].

NEWTON You hadn’t given yourself permission.

OH Right. Why didn’t I?

FOY That makes me want to cry.

OH So the fact that [creator] Phoebe Waller-Bridge, BBC America and Sally Woodward Gentle, our producer, said, “Yes, why not this [for me]?” I felt slightly ashamed — and if I can’t see myself in that moment, then other people have that weight as well. And so we need to hold these things up for other people to see.

NEWTON Oh my God, yes.

OH And that’s one of the reasons why I said, “I’m going to take this. I’m gonna leave my life here — I’m going to do everything to make this.”

This is why representation matters. It is also why it is important for these roundtables to not just be six white faces (as they have often been). When the topic of sexuality and getting roles comes up there are very different reactions from each woman with Sandra Oh backing up Angela Bassett’s statement that this has not been her experience, “I’ll echo Angela’s experience. For me, I don’t think I’ve ever gotten any job based on bum bum bum … (motions to her body). As fabulous as it is. (Laughter.)”

How their bodies are portrayed on screen is another insightful moment. Elisabeth Moss notes that in her contract she has to approve any kind of nudity. She has final say over every single frame used.

The full panel will air on SundanceTV July 15.

The 2018 Golden Globes Red Carpet Part II

8 Jan

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s 2018 Golden Globes coverage. For a broader discussion of the black ensemble red carpet statement, head here.

This post will be more in line with our usual red carpet chatter from award season. My favorite outfit of the night was in no big shock news, a ladysuit. Claire Foy gives off so much DGAF attitude in slouchy Stella McCartney. The bold red lip adds to the impact and it certainly looks like Foy has shed Elizabeth for Lisbeth.Golden Globe winner (that sure feels good to type) Sterling K. Brown in a velvet Isaia tux looks fabulous, but wife Ryan Michelle Bathe steals the show in another great ladysuit; this one is by Dolce & Gabbana.

His opening word is perfect. And to Brown’s onscreen wife, Susan Kelechi Watson. There are many ways to do black. A super sequin Monsoori jumpsuit is a knockout choice. Plus, pockets! Surprise pants were a repeated theme of the night including nominee Laurie Metcalf in a fabulous Sachin & Babi ensemble.Good Girls is on my most anticipated list of the new 2018 shows, Christina Hendricks was on hand to promote this show and also work the surprise pants courtesy of Christian Siriano. What I really love about this look is how it is so Christina Hendricks (that velvet bodice), but then it swerves in an unexpected direction.Former Mad Men co-star, Alison Brie also successfully does the ball gown to pants scroll down, in dramatic Vassilis Zoulias. And a totally different take on the pants/dress hybrid is Maggie Gyllenhaal in sequinned Monse. There’s something dancer adjacent about this. Though definitely not in those heels.Gal Gadot adds a menswear twist to a super feminine frock in Tom Ford. More great lipstick inspiration too. In super disappointing news Call Me By Your Name didn’t win anything (except our hearts).

There’s not a lot to be said about the men in black. It isn’t a stretch from their usual attire, but there are a few guys to highlight. The texture and flower detail on Armie Hammer’s Armani jacket makes it stand out. Timothée Chalamet’s Berluti look is pretty standard, but they look cute here so *shrug emoji* Ewan McGregor looks super sharp. Plus he has the ideal beard/hair length thing going on.

He also shows how to sincerely thank your ex and current gf without making it sound complicated. Chris Hemsworth also does something slightly different in brocade Etro and velvet Louboutins. Oh, hello Taika Waititi. Silver Fox alert. The Stranger Things teens always have fun with fashion. This doesn’t stop when there is a black dress code. I am particularly fond of Noah Schnapp’s Balmain bold tux buttons and Elizabetta Boutique scarf and Caleb McLaughlin’s Ports 1961 tux and turtleneck combo.

Gaten Matarazzo is in Suit Supply and Finn Wolfhard keeps it classic in Saint Laurent. Sadie Sink looks like she is wearing the Miu Miu version of the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season finale frock and it is fabulous. On Twitter I noted what a bummer it was that Millie Bobby Brown didn’t to walk the carpet with the other Stranger teens, but I am glad to say she looked like she was having fun with them later. The best entrance award goes to Norman Lear and Rita Moreno. The best Matador inspired leather jacket goes to Rita Moreno.

Stay tuned for Part III!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 Nov

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving—yeah I know it was yesterday—to all celebrating! Even with the four-day weekend, there are still plenty of red carpet moments and award season antics. The AMAs delivered some sartorial highs, the Independent Spirit Award nominations have been announced, Call Me By Your Name is out today and there’s a reunion that makes my heart swell.

I realized last week that “Out of the Box” has turned into something a little more than just the best looks; it has become a weekly newsletter of sorts with a mix of outfits and other things that excite me including trailers and performances. The level of activity on TV Ate My Wardrobe is less than it used to be (because I am writing for other outlets) and this is all very much a work in progress (as is life), but I am thankful I have this outlet to share these weekly observations. Viola Davis is a vision in white caped-sleeve crystal-embroidered Michael Kors Collection at the AMAs and she never disappoints on the red carpet. As the host of the AMAs, Tracee Ellis Ross had numerous outfit changes throughout the night and she made a dramatic impact on her arrival in a stunning custom Stella McCartney sequin gown.

Regular readers will know how much I love Tracee Ellis Ross’ Instagram feed and it showcases the many looks she wore while hosting. I’ve gone for another sparkly number and this video really captures this aspect of the Paco Rabanne matching skirt and top. Another highlight is this tribute to both her mother and Michael Jackson.Clueless reboot, but now Cher is a spy and played by Yara Shahidi. Sign me up. Going against the jewel tone palette she wears as Veronica Lodge on Riverdale is Camila Mendes in a romantic J. Mendel gown.

And for all things Riverdale season 2 style check out my Observer column here
I’ve been listening to Kelly Clarkson’s new album “Meaning of Life” nonstop and holy hell is this Christian Siriano feathered gown serving up super diva feelings.

I love her. They’re not actually sisters, but Claire Foy and Vanessa Kirby very much look like siblings as they both opt for seasonal sparkles of varying lengths—Christian Dior for Foy, Prada for Kirby—at the premiere of The Crown. Foy’s Lisbeth Salander hair looks great and I am super excited for the second season of this show.  The full Ava DuVernay/Ryan Coogler panel transcript is going to be made available soon, but for now enjoy this snippet and DuVernay’s patterned frock.

And the new Wrinkle in Time trailer. Also at VultureFest is Sofia Coppola in an outfit that looks straight from my closet. So of course I am here for it.Jennifer Garner’s giving great slip dress at a screening of her new film The Tribes of Palos Verdes and this week I watched the episode of Felicity where she first makes an appearance.

And as a big Alias fan, I would love to see her reunite with J.J. Abrams in a professional capacity. Maybe Star Wars, maybe something else. Or just get Garner a great TV project. At the Film Independent 2018 Spirit Awards press conference, Tessa Thompson goes for pattern clashing Jason Wu and some amazing orange pumps. This is one of my favorite award shows of the season and I am so happy that Nick Kroll and John Mulaney will be back again to host. It is also one of the best red carpets of the entire calendar and Thompson’s look here is very much in line with the kind of thing you can expect from the main event.

For the full list of nominees head here. One movie that has got multiple Spirit Award nominations is the incredible Call Me By Your Name (released today in the US) and the press tour for this movie has included a number appearance delights. It is a movie I watched twice at the cinema within the space of one week and it is probably my favorite film of the year. I finished the book at the weekend and the soundtrack has been playing in-between those Kelly Clarkson listens.

Timothée Chalamet is having quite the year and he gets a great plaid suit modeling shot in GQ. Hopefully we will see more of this kind of suit wearing throughout award season.

I fell down a GoldDerby video hole the other day, but I still don’t know where Chalamet got this eagle sweater number from. It is information I would like to have.Armie Hammer covers The Hollywood Reporter this week and he is staring deep into your soul.  In the interview he talks about the hypocrisy of Hollywood and the Oscars with how Casey Affleck was lauded while Nate Parker was shutout. There’s also a discussion about his interesting career trajectory and the joyous experience of making Call Me By Your Name. And Hammer in chunky knits. Always appreciated.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Oct

Film festival season continues and this week’s “Out of the Box” includes looks from both London and New York. Pattern continues to dominate and even though summer is over, florals are everywhere. Plus magazine covers continue to make me swoon and there’s a little something from Paris Fashion Week after this bumper post mid-week.

Oh and something I went to in person. I really like the Gucci bow collection and it reminds me a little of the Valentino gowns from last year (also at LFF).

At the Breathless premiere Claire Foy lets the dress do the talking, opting for a smoky eye and no accessories. This continues to be a very busy year for the soon-to-be Lisbeth Salander. More Gucci and Carey Mulligan’s gone Grecian goddess in gold and green at the Mudbound premiere. It is a beautiful look that ditches her usual twee styling choices.
Mudbound director Dee Rees tux jacket game is strong and pairing this botanical print with burnt orange is perfect for fall. It is still early doors, but there is Oscar buzz surrounding this movie and it is definitely on my most anticipated list. It will premiere on Netflix next month (November 17).Also on the highly anticipated list is Call Me by Your Name and at the NYFF both Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet have added pattern to their looks. Chalamet’s gone subtle in Prince of Wales check and Armie’s embracing the floral trend. Results are good.

But wait. Guys? THIS IS WHO I AM NOW.

A post shared by Busy Philipps (@busyphilipps) on

Busy gives A+ Paris posing and also I would like this entire outfit, please and thank you. In Busy and Michelle Stories updates; they dyed Michelle’s hair pink and there was definitely a lot of wine consumed.Yesterday, I went to a the LFF Jake Gyllenhaal ‘Screen Talk’ event and this is less about what he was wearing (pretty standard daytime promotion outfit) and more about getting to attend.

I do plan on writing something a bit longer (probably via TinyLetter), but for now enjoy the video above of Jake discussing his Brokeback Mountain audition.

I’m glad to get a close-up look at Edith Bowman’s Altuzarra floral frock as it looked amazing from our third row seats. And while this is the first time I have been to an event like this IRL, I have watched a lot of these kinds of talks online and Edith is one of the best prepared interviewers I have seen; she asked interesting questions, kept the conversation flowing and had done her research.  In more Jake news; he is now the face of Eternity by Calvin Klein alongside model and advocate Liya Kebode and four-year-old actress Leila. We are officially in fragrance season and this is both a print and TV campaign, expect those towards the end of the month. Yes, I will be swooning every single time.

Not sure what this shot of Lupita is for (magazine or otherwise), but I am in awe nonetheless. Double Claire Foy this week and she’s got two big projects coming out in quick succession; Breathless and season 2 of The Crown. It isn’t surprising to see her on the cover of British Vogue and I love that they didn’t go for something that mimics her Queen styling. Instead opting for a stunning and simple Christian Siriano gown. Green makes for a striking background and Samira Wiley’s Stylist cover image is incredibly captivating. And in good news for your bank account the sweater she is wearing here is from Uniqlo with an Urban Outfitters turtleneck below.

And for more turtleneck inspiration; check out my Outlander knitwear inspiration piece.

Best of the Pre 2017 Emmy Awards Parties

17 Sep

Happy Emmy Awards Day! Tonight is the big event, but first there are a lot of pre parties with FX, BAFTA and Variety among those celebrating the nominees.

This has been a very busy couple of weeks for red carpet style and come back tomorrow morning when we will be showcasing the best looks from the Emmy red carpet. The biggest trends so far are bold prints, pants and shimmer.More ruffled J. Mendel delights and Keri Russell’s red frock is giving off some ’70s vibes, which I am of course here for. Matthew Rhys mixes casual in jeans and white sneakers with a blazer and while I don’t think it is going to happen, I would love to see them both win tonight. But if Rhys is going to get beaten by anyone, then I hope it is Sterling K. Brown. And here is Brown with wife Ryan Michelle Bathe looking all kinds of couple goals. Hoping for some A+ Insta material from this pair tonight.IRL bestie of Sterling K. Brown and Atlanta star Bryan Tyree Henry delivers sartorially with some fabulous snake slippers and palm tree print shirt.Lakeith Stanfield in a leather shirt is amazing, but also I would very much like those shoes for myself. FX really is home to some of the most stylish casts, as this party proves.
Dreamy swoony sighs because Stanley Tucci is wearing a three-piece suit. Switching out her very Carrie Bradshaw Delpozo for this dream of print Valentino dress and this might be the most Mad Men thing I’ve seen Kiernan Shipka in—aside from her Sally Draper costumes. Alison Pill goes classic in black and red in a less ’50s version of this Elisabeth Moss ensemble.Holy pattern, Martha! I am in love with everything about this Alison Wright ladysuit take.Tween and teen boys continue to outshine the grown-ups and Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp in custom Laboratoire is doing just that. Florals and velvet is always going to be a winner. Queen Judith Light crushing it in pants and matching blouse in an outfit that wouldn’t look out of place in the recent (and underrated) Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie.And at the Variety party, Judith Light looks fucking fabulous in a gold ladysuit. Bowing down, forever.More metallic wonders and Viola Davis in sequin and floral Alice + Olivia with a black top is pre-party chic at its best. Tracee Ellis Ross in leopard print and that lipstick is enough to make me ignore the random tassels at the bottom of this Michael Kors Collection dress.

I love her.

Also, every flame and heart eye emoji ever. This is a great print dress and the only thing I would change about Abbi Jacobson’s look is the boots. Not that there is anything wrong with boots and a dress—it is my go to—but I’d opt for something a little more ankle/less calf length and possibly a darker color. Or my fave green ones.Claire Foy is looking very un-Queen Elizabeth as she turns her attention to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; lipstick and hair are a darker shade and this Gucci is goth whimsy. I always do a double take with Vanessa Kirby because she looks nothing like Margaret IRL—even though I saw her looking a lot like this in The Hour long before The Crown. Going for the opposite approach to her screen sister and the length combined with the bell sleeves gives a strong ’60s vibe.
More from The Crown cast looking very different to how they do on the show and also a whole lot of feelings because I’m still not over Jared Harris’ devastating performance. Also that flash of pink is delightful and this looks like a fun cast to party with. Someone make this rom-com.

The Crown Season 2 Trailer: Fabulous Coats, Beards and Scandal

10 Aug

For most of season 1 of The Crown, whenever Prince Philip opened his mouth I found it hard not roll my eyes and I joked that my alt title for this show would be “Shut Up, Philip.” If this new trailer — an Entertainment Weekly exclusive — for season 2 is anything to go by, it is going to be more of the same from me. Yes he now has beard and I am Claire Foy’s withering look.

What I am very excited about is everything Margaret, a position I also had during The Crown’s first outing (as you can see from my article here). Costume wise I can’t seem to find out who has taken over from the incredible Michele Clapton, but this preview shows there is plenty to look forward to on this front. Particularly when it comes to Margaret and coats as this image from EW shows. Mohair is my weakness so this is an instant heart eyes shot before even factoring in the sunglasses and lipstick.

There are more shots over at Entertainment Weekly and the first trailer gives a sneak look at a blonde Matthew Goode; he is playing photographer Tony Armstrong-Jones and a love interest for Margaret. Vanessa Kirby also shared a better look at his character (and more A+ Margaret style) on Instagram (where you will find some fun season 1 outtakes).

2017 Emmy Nomination Acting Wish List

12 Jul

It is almost here! Emmy nomination day is tomorrow (Thursday, July 13) and as has become tradition here is a rundown of who I would love to see getting recognized by the Television Academy.

Every year this wish list keeps on growing and of course there are some repeat names featured. Some previous staples are not featured due to missing the window of eligibility including last year’s Best Actress in a Drama winner, Tatiana Maslany. Maslany is crushing this final season of Orphan Black and while it is unlikely, hopefully memories will last that long so she is included next year.

As with the 2016 wish list, I have split this into drama, mini-series and comedy and includes a mix of locks, first timers and outside bets. In this time of Peak TV there is no time to watch everything so if your fave is not included this might be why.

DramaKeri Russell and Matthew Rhys

Kicking off as I have done each of my previous wish lists with Americans leads Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. The big surprise of last year was not having to use the gif for when they didn’t nominated, as voters came on through by finally recognizing the incredible performances Russell and Rhys give on a weekly basis.

Season 5 of The Americans was more introspective as the action turned inward dealing with the toll of spy life and the things Rhys and Russell do with their faces when there is no/minimal dialogue constantly has me in awe. It wasn’t all doom and gloom for this pair of spies and a surprise wedding delivered a much needed romantic respite. Plus it is good to see a wedding with crowns that doesn’t end in murder. Carrie Coon and Justin Theroux (and the rest of The Leftovers cast)

As with Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, the things Carrie Coon and Justin Theroux do with their face parts is astounding on every level. This final season of The Leftovers delivered the love story aspect I was hoping for and incredible performances we have come to expect from this exceptional cast. It is why this is the third year I have been hoping to see this show get recognized.

Carrie Coon gif at the ready for if/when it doesn’t.Elisabeth Moss and Samira Wiley

Keeping with this theme of the best in face parts acting comes Elisabeth Moss and Samira Wiley in The Handmaid’s Tale. Both women crush it in their abilities to wear a mask and then revealing the real devastating emotion of the character. They are pretty much the reason why I sobbed my way through the finale.

Bonus shout out to Samira Wiley because season 4 of OITNB is the one that voters can nominate and she should def get one for once again turning me into a chin quiver wreck. Also her smile lights up the screen like no other.Sterling K. Brown and Ron Cephas Jones

A lot of TV makes me cry as you can tell from the previous entry, but I’m pretty sure that This is Us wins the prize for episode that made me ugly cry the most. Taking a break from the Pearson family drama to go on a road trip with Randall and his dying father William; “Memphis” showcases the talents of both Sterling K. Brown and Ron Cephas Jones. Christine Baranski

After the disappointing end of The Good Wife I wasn’t sure if I wanted more from this world. And then I remembered how much I love Diane Lockhart and how much fun this show could be without the Alicia baggage (looking at you Peter). And it is fun! Christine Baranski steps into the lead position and of course she is as amazing as Diane’s collection of fancy blazers and statement necklacesClaire Foy and Jared Harris

The Crown gives great Royal family dramz and even though Liz has to maintain a sense of decorum, it is very fun seeing throw stuff at husband when he is being terrible (my alt name for this show is Shut Up, Philip). Foy is great at both aspects and I’m throwing in Jared Harris into the nomination wish list hat for his impact in such a small amount of screen time. And yes he made me sob, which is maybe a prerequisite for a lot of this wish list.

Mini-SeriesBig Little Lies Cast – Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz and Reese Witherspoon

Months after and I am still thinking about Big Little Lies and I would love to see these women dominate the mini-series acting categories.

The scene at the top of the stairs in the finale is another great example of communicating with no words and the bonus Audrey Hepburn getup factor adds something to this scene. Also got to give them props for all the delicious gifs they have given us. Reactions for all scenarios.

BTW – I swear I am not basing this list on how much I use a gif from something, but if I did BLL would win every category. Even ones they can’t be nominated in.Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange

Jessica Lange gets the showier part of the two in Feud and considering a lot of time is dedicated to whether Bette or Joan has the best material; it feels kinda meta talking about these performances in this way. Best dramatic use of a cigarette and sunglasses definitely goes to Susan Sarandon though. Carrie Coon and Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Season 3 of Fargo didn’t really come together until the last few episodes, but Carrie Coon had a great standout moment early in the season when she traveled to California as part of the investigation. She really does give fabulous hotel/motel staying.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead got to show off her survival skills once again (see both BrainDead and 10 Cloverfield Lane for more) and if it wasn’t for these two women I would’ve probably quit this season early on.

ComedyPhoebe Waller-Bridge

One thread running through most of this comedy acting wish list is that the star(s) of the show is also the creator. This adds a personal element to the material, which I guess I am drawn to.

First up Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Fleabag, which delivered on smut, laughs, great lipstick and yep, you guessed it, tears. I am nothing if not consistent. Donald Glover and Zazie Beetz

Atlanta is like nothing else on TV right now and one example of this is the relationship between Earn and Van. Exes who go out for dinner – in an episode which showed just how difficult dinner out can be on a budget – sleep over and are raising a daughter together. The spotlight shines on Zazie Beetz in one of the episodes of this very good season; focusing on Van, her career and a drug test mishap. Issa Rae

Like I said, it is a really great year for the multi-hyphenates and Issa Rae’s Insecure is another strong example of this trend. Also giving another different perspective on relationships and the fuck ups we make along the way and Rae shines in the friendship aspects (even when they’re in a fight), career struggles and why a couch is sometimes much more than somewhere to sit and watch TV.Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe

It might be because I have friends who are in Italy right now so Instagram is awash with great food and architecture pics or that season 2 of Master of None started here, but all I want to do is go to Italy and eat pasta right now.

Season 2 had Aziz Ansari mixing things up including a stellar episode about modern dating and the Thanksgiving spectacular that dealt with Denise’s coming out story based on Lena Waithe’s experiences.

One other standout moment was a scene in “The Dinner Party” that played to the entirety of Marc Almond’s “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” with Dev sitting in the back of the car. It was mesmerizing in ways I didn’t expect. Rachel Bloom

Songs of a different kind and I can’t tell you how often I get “Period Sex” stuck in my head.

Rachel Bloom once again gifts us with so many great tracks including “The Math of Love Triangles,” “So Maternal,” “We Tapped That Ass,” “Remember That We Suffered,” “It Was a Shit Show” and “Friendtopia.” And this season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend shattered the love triangle (miss you, Greg), explored love, friendships and took a deeper dive into Rebecca’s past. Lena Dunham and Matthew Rhys

This season of Girls was definitely the strongest for Lena Dunham from an acting perspective with the scene between Hannah and Adam in the diner as the standout moment. Again everything that had to be said was done with a look and it was subtly moving.

The two-hander with Matthew Rhys was another highlight and the wolfish grin Rhys gives towards the episode after the incident is wonderfully terrifying. It would be great to see Rhys and Carrie Coon getting double nominations.Gina Rodriguez

Yeah I’m gonna talk about crying again and Jane the Virgin has always caused some waterworks on my end. Season 3 took it to new levels and Gina Rodriguez’s reactions to THAT phone call was especially devastating. But the show didn’t wallow in misery and it was good to see Rodriguez getting to play many different things with Jane this season. DeRon Horton

While “Chapter V” (directed by Barry Jenkins) is the Dear White People episode standout, it is DeRon Horton as Lionel who gives the performance of the season. Lionel is super shy and trying to fit in; both things we have seen many times, but he is also coming to terms with his sexuality (including being attracted to his roommate) and he doesn’t feel like a character we have seen on TV before. This is important and Horton’s gives a nuanced take of a young black gay man. Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney

The messiness of Sharon and Rob’s relationship hits new heights in season 3 as they keep secrets from the other, giving both Horgan and Delaney new levels to play with. Yes this is another series that had me sobbing and laughing. Kleenex should probs sponsor this blog.

Speak Singing the Spice Girls with Nicole Kidman, Riz Ahmed, Keri Russell and More

6 Jul

The August issue of W Magazine features a portfolio of some of the hottest stars from recent and forthcoming TV shows including Riz Ahmed, Nicole Kidman, Keri Russell, Claire Foy, Millie Bobby Brown and Milo Ventimiglia. So far they have released several video interviews from the various profiles that you can see below and today delivers this Spice Girls themed ‘Lyric Improv’ delight. This is in a similar vein to the Clueless speech version from film award season.

To give some context and to make you feel as old as I do right now, the song “Wannabe” was released in 1996 and Millie Bobby Brown was not born until 2004. I remember being at a friend’s 13th birthday sleepover just after this song had come out as we danced around her garden singing this song before settling down to the mandatory horror movie selection (that night included Candy Man and I still won’t say his name into the mirror). We were mostly into indie music (see anything Britpop/grunge), but on this night we let those pretenses drop and enjoyed this now pop music classic.

So yeah, now I’m feeling old and also this is why Claire Foy’s little bit in this video really speaks to me. Nicole Kidman has gone for an interesting choice of seductive tones for this song.

Also here is Riz:

And Nicole:

TV award season is my fave.

In this week’s work in other places, here is my love letter to all things Ruth Negga and Tulip on Preacher.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Feb

The SAG Awards delivered on both speeches and fashion this weekend and on this week’s “Out of the Box” we’ve got a whole lot of great outfits from the Entertainment Weekly pre-SAG party with a dash of the PGA Awards, the beginning of the end for Girls, a new campaign and a very important announcement.yara-shahidi-ewYara Shahidi was our best dressed at the SAG Awards in an incredible striped Naeem Khan frock and at the pre-SAG EW party she went in a very different, but just as fun direction. All baby blues from eye makeup to the abstract print matching Sophie Theallet shirt and pants.kristen-schaalFor all things wacky and delightful look no further than Kristen Schaal and her amazing kitty dress. I love everything about this. Also super cute gold shoes that I would like in my life.malin-akermanMalin Akerman serving up full shoulder drama in metallic striped Zhivago and this is the kind of dress you wear when you want to throw a drink in someone’s face. Or just look cool as fuck.grace-gealey-and-candice-pattonPatterned ladysuit alert with Grace Byers going full plunge in Keti Chkhikvadze and in very cute dress news we have Candice Patton in Tommy Hilfiger. That collar is everything (and now I am looking at dresses on the Tommy Hilfiger website and am very tempted by this).the-crownWhile I very much preferred both Vanessa Kirby and Claire Foy’s SAG ceremony outfits, I also couldn’t pass up this opportunity to post this picture of a much happier (and more alive in some cases) family from The Crown. Lipstick points for Kirby and Foy too.stranger-teensThe Stranger Things cast tends to be split between the kids and the teens when posing for photos; here at the EW party Natalia Dyer instead hangs with her onscreen younger brother and his friends and once again the boys look super swish in their suits. Especially Caleb McLaughlin in bow tie and waistcoat. Dyer’s super floral mini is another very cute Miu Miu and this brand is working like a charm on her.miles-brown-and-caleb-mclaughlinDancing cuties and Stranger Things meets Black-ish. Blue shoes are a must at the pre-SAG party for Caleb McLaughlin and Miles Brown.sag-dancingMore fabulous shoes and moves from the boys at a SAG after party and they’re joined by Janelle Monàe.stranger-dancingAnd now with Samira Wiley and the rest of the Stranger Things kids. Post awards dancing photos are the best.rami-malekThe night before the SAGs Rami Malek went a little more classic in his choice of Dior suit and he also appears to have adopted the signature Eddie Redmayne lean.girls-thrGoing full Friends cast shot as The Hollywood Reporter celebrates Girls with an oral history and a cover featuring the core cast. This is a really well styled shoot and I now have Lost in Translation like questions as I wonder what Adam Driver is whispering into Andrew Rannells’ ear. kenzoKenzo’s new Spring 2017 campaign features Tracee Ellis Ross, Jesse Williams and cellist/singer Kelsey Lu. A short film called “Music is My Mistress” will be released next Thursday (February 9) and if these print ads are any indication it is going to be pretty special.yara-shahidi-ivy-parkAnd in other fantastic campaign news; here is Yara Shahidi for Ivy Park and this oversized sweater/short shorts look is great. Shahidi appeared in Lemonade and re-teaming with Beyoncé for her clothing brand makes so much sense.

Also thank you Beyoncé for giving us something to be happy about this week. And I love that her underwear is not matching. Also where can I get that bra?

Best of the 2017 SAG Red Carpet: Sparkle, Color and Texture

30 Jan

Award season continues and on the E! coverage last night it very much felt like there was an elephant in the room throughout the interviews. That elephant being the political climate and the immigration ban for certain countries that has brought about demonstrations at airports across the U.S. The actual SAG award show didn’t keep quiet on this matter though and Kerry Washington kicked things off with a pointed explanation as to why actors can have political opinions and with every speech there were calls for inclusion and the repeated assertion that this will not be a quiet fight.

Before we get to the usual dress rundown I just want to highlight a few of the many speeches to check out. First up was Julia Louis-Dreyfus and she set the tone, Mahershala Ali gave an important, beautiful and emotional speech and David Harbour of Stranger Things delivered some super impassioned words that took both us and Winona Ryder on a journey. I’m also so excited Hidden Figures won and Taraji P. Henson got to talk about the heroes they played and the importance of unity. And like Sarah Paulson I would suggest donating to the ACLU. For more speeches check out both the SAG and TBS YouTube channels.

And now for dresses and this red carpet was awash with bold color and sparkles; two of my favorite things. For part 2 including a lot of suits head here.yara-shahidiYara Shahidi’s Naeem Khan super colorful and striped frock is my number one look of the night; everything about this is making me smile. Shahidi told Glamour that she was excited to wear this designer as he is a Michelle Obama favorite. michelle-dockeryKeeping on this theme with Michelle Dockery in Elie Saab and another stunner. I’m not going to miss Downton Abbey clogging up the drama nominations, but I am going to miss Dockery’s regular appearances at these things as she always delivers. busy-and-michelleBest best friends and this Louis Vuitton frock is so much better than Michelle Williams’ Golden Globes number. And more stripes to add to the mix; this time dipped in metal. The jury is out on the scarf – it is a little too mid ’00s combined with the Isadora Duncan danger aspect – but it is good to see Williams stepping outside her usual twee box (which you know I love).

Busy Philipps is also keeping with the all things shiny theme in a fabulous purple Jeffrey Dodd dress.taraji-p-hensonSheer can often be the thing that turns a great dress and ruins it; not so in the case of Taraji P. Henson in Reem Acra and the rare occasion where I like this fabric choice. Loving the undercut too.tarajiPlus look at the fabulous drama on display as she moves. janelle-monaeNow this is how you do floral to the max and Janelle Monàe’s Chanel midi frock is another example of how she keeps in the black/white palette zone without it getting stalesaniyya-sidneyAll the dress points to another Hidden Figures star and Saniyya Sidney is every level of adorable. Sidney is also in Fences making that two award season movies.thandie-newtonI’m currently reading The Devil in the White City so the Ferris wheel on Thandie Newton’s Schiaparelli gown instantly makes me think of that, but this also is an incredible dress which is full of sartorial whimsy. It tells a story and is sparkly to boot.claire-foy-and-matt-smithClaire Foy and Valentino are a perfect match and this is another case of preferring this to her Golden Globes frock. Onscreen husband Matt Smith scrubs up nicely and unlike the character he plays I don’t feel the need to tell him to shut up.vanessa-kirbyAnd now for Foy’s onscreen sister and pleats make for the best twirling/shimmying material so I am all over Vanessa Kirby’s Luisa Beccaria silver halter neck. Plus Margaret is my favorite on The Crown and I am so excited that Matthew Goode has been cast to play Lord Snowdon in season 2.

And thanks to Instagram we get to see the detail of her braided updo by Adir Abergel and the beautiful hair accessory he used. This is why I love social media; finding out these extras and getting to celebrate the people behind them.

angela-sarafyan You don’t tend to see a whole lot of paisley on the red carpet and this is a shame. Thankfully Westworld’s Angela Sarafyan is bringing it back in Zac Posen.gwendoline-christieGwendoline Christie has long worn Vivienne Westwood and she mentioned Westwood’s “activist mindset” when discussing why she’s such a fan. This sequin jumpsuit is incredible and I also love that those heels are not small; Christie might be super tall already but you can always add inches. Fantastic lipstick too.viloa-and-bryceViola Davis and Bryce Dallas Howard deliver on the super fancy jewels which is an instant way to give an outfit an instant oomph. Davis also made another inspiring speech this time honoring Fences writer August Wilson. annalise-bassoOne very good reason to wear caped sleeve wings is because they give great drama as Captain Fantastic’s Annalise Basso demonstrates.captain-fantasticTeam Captain Fantastic are a delight.lily-tomlin-and-dolly-partonAll the sparkles and joy I need.
