Best of the 2017 Tony Awards Red Carpet

12 Jun

Time for the Tony Awards or the final letter you need to get to spell out EGOT. It was a particularly hot day in NYC yesterday and probably not the best weather occasion for tuxedos and long heavy gowns. But the show must go on (I’m sorry) and the red carpet with its rose filled living wall did not disappoint.

For the full winners list head here.Last year Cynthia Erivo won for The Color Purple and she returns looking triumphant in a plunging custom beaded CG gown. This was Cobie Smulders first Tony Awards and she knocks it out of the park (or theater) in a stunning print Schiaparelli that mixes patterns while giving a fresh take on florals.Chrissy Teigen is giving me so many Art Deco feelings in custom Pamella Roland and in personal news I will be attempting to make some things from her cookbook this week.

Also, John Legend is working a larger bow tie and is now only an Emmy away from an EGOT after last night. This is fucking fabulous. Rachel Bloom hanging out with Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole; living her best life.Sutton Foster is also giving great plunging beaded black gown in Christian Siriano and the rose wall really is the best dramatic backdrop. It is impossible for me to see Mary Beth Peil and not think of both Jackie Florrick and Grams; this might be the Tonys and yet I will always view it through the lens of TV, because I am the worst. And she looks amazing here.

If only this was the year Michelle Williams was nominated because that would be the ultimate Dawson’s Creek reunion. Wearing what looks like the most comfortable dress is Jenna Lyons in snake print Voutsa x Paul Marlowe and I am enthusiastic about lounge wear adjacent formal attireDavid Oyelowo is always a GQMF and at the Tonys this is no different. Not only is his suit/pocket square game strong, but those embroidered slippers take it to the next level. Oh, Hello lands on Netflix tomorrow (Tuesday 13) and while I am far from a Broadway expert, watching this show while on honeymoon in New York last September is the most fun I have ever had in a theater. Safe to say I am looking forward to seeing it again and not being jet lagged this time.

Also John Mulaney and Nick Kroll look rather dashing, but I am missing their particular brand of Gil and George style. Elijah and Dorota: the spinoff we not only deserve, but also need.

Best of the 2017 Oscars Red Carpet: Dudes in Suits

27 Feb

Oh hey there! Welcome to part 2 of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Oscar red carpet coverage and often the suits get relegated to quick round up at the end of a post or lumped in elsewhere. Not this year as there are so many good ones including your classic tuxedo choice and a lot of variation.

For the gowns head heremahershala-aliMahershala Ali has been a regular fixture during award season and he doesn’t just stick to one look switching from white at the SAGs to black last night. Ali’s was the first award of the night and he delivered an incredible speech; he is also the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar and the significance of this right now should not be lost.

Rather than a red carpet shot I wanted to get Ali with is statue and this also gives a good look at his three piece tux and that pocket square, which adds a flash of pattern. tarell-alvin-mccraneyWe’re going to be keeping on the Moonlight theme for the next few photos and it is not just those in front of the camera who pulled out all the stops as writer Tarell Alvin McCraney shut everything down in this all-white ensemble. On a night of many different causes being recognized through pins and ribbons McCraney is wearing Elizabeth Taylor’s original AIDs awareness one; it has a deep level of significance as his mother died from AIDs related complications.

Along with Barry Jenkins they gave one of the most thoughtful speeches of the night when they picked up the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar.andre-hollandAndré Holland gives great classic tux and I really wish there was another season of The Knick.trevante-rhodes-alex-r-hibbert-and-ashton-sandersChiron through ages and the these three Moonlight actors walked the red carpet together and Trevante Rhodes, Alex R. Hibbert and Ashton Sanders all look great in their matching Calvin Klein by Raf Simons suits.

This needs to be an ad campaign. Updated to include the news that ad campaigns are actually underway! And there’s more *insert flames emoji*

david-oyelowoDavid Oyelowo mentioned during his E! red carpet interview that Dolce & Gabbana always serve him well and he isn’t wrong; love the white jacket with black lapels look.dev-and-his-mumDev Patel gets all the adorable points as he brought his mother to the Academy Awards as his date (she also looks amazing) and he really is a whole lot of handsome in Burberry.riz-ahmedMoving on to the blues and there’s nothing to feel sad about here as super stylist Ilaria Urbinati knows menswear and how to make an impact. Case in point Riz Ahmed in Ermenegildo Zegna.chris-evansChris Evans is also an Ilaria Urbinati client and in a different shade of blue – but just as striking – he’s crushing it in Salvatore Ferragamo.ryan-goslingIf someone is going to wear ruffles and pull it off it is Ryan Gosling and he looks fabulous in Gucci.john-and-chrissyEntering the cute couple zone and as always Chrissy Teigen gives great content by revealing on E! how nervous John Legend is about performing.

Unrelated, but so far I have only made one thing from Teigen’s cookbook and yet I’ve made them twice because the bacon hashbrown recipe is incredible.john-cho-and-kerri-higuchiI was very happy to see John Cho up on stage and yes I still miss Selfie. I really love the simple elegance of his wife, Kerri Higuchi’s floral frock.andrew-garfield-and-sunny-pawarThere are no words to quite explain just how adorable this photo is. Just know that every time Sunny Pawar came on screen the room squealed with delight. This happened a lot.

Best of the 2016 Oscars Red Carpet: Sparkle and Pattern

29 Feb

Welcome to the final hurrah of awards season (well there are also still Vanity Fair after party photos to deal with) and after months of campaigning and many other red carpets the Oscars are here. Now I’m not going to say I was totally disappointed, underwhelmed perhaps as overall the Golden Globes and maybe even the SAGs had more standout dress moments. There was a lot to love this year, but not a whole lot that had that Oscar WOAH. No contenders to the Michelle Williams in yellow Vera Wang from 10 years ago.

There are still plenty of dresses to peruse and welcome to part 1 of our highlights – kicking off with all the sparkly delights.Saoirse RonanSaoirse Ronan delivered the first WOW reaction of the night in emerald Calvin Klein Collection and it is giving me Keira Knightley Atonement dress feelings with a 1970s sequin twist. That is a very good thing.Naomi Watts and Liev SchreiberMore sequins and a gown that looks just as stunning in motion as it does in these posed photos; Naomi Watts is onto a winner in Armani Privé and Liev Schreiber is doing the classic tux thing (for dudes in exciting suits check out the style highlights from the Independent Spirit Awards).Margot RobbiePlunging gold snakeskin for Margot Robbie and this is another dress that is giving off so many 1970s vibes and in not so shocking news I am very much here for this decade’s strong influence.Sandy PowellSound the #LadySuitWatch2016 klaxon and costume designer Sandy Powell (no E! this is not Tilda) does not disappoint in a year when she has been nominated not once, but twice (for Carol and Cinderella – see photos from a Cinderella exhibit here). Amy PoehlerWhen I first saw Amy Poehler in Andrew Gn I snap judgement declared this my favorite ever red carpet look for her and the morning after I still feel the same. Love the embroidery and the drama. Plus a caped sleeve is always going to hit my sweet spot.Alicia VikanderIt has been a season of big hitters for the always fashion forward and adventurous Alicia Vikander so I was a little disappointed with what Louis Vuitton made for her very big night. Don’t get me wrong it is a lovely gown (bubble hem aside), but it’s not the triumphant levels we saw at the SAGs. I feel greedy for wanting more.

I am glad she won (even if it should have been for Ex-Machina) and I’m really looking forward to seeing what she does both on screen and on the red carpet in the not too distant future. Shout-out to the woman in silver sequins in the background as she looks fabulous.Daisy RidleyAnother recent red carpet big hitter and Daisy Ridley crushed the Star Wars press tour on every level. Chanel Couture is a great step although I am not in love with the sheer trim, but Ridley is certainly working the awkward length and gets those all important lipstick points. John Legend and Chrissy TeiganChrissy Teigen posted a photo on Instagram of final Oscar prep which included getting sewn into her dress – standard fancy gown procedure which always has me wondering about trips to the bathroom – and she looks incredible in rose embroidered Marchesa. John Legend as always scrubs up very well.Juliet RylanceAnother incredible embroidered creation and Juliet Rylance’s Temperley London frock gives off a very fresh vibe. Rylance was there with her father Mark Rylance and his Best Supporting Actor speech was one of my favorites from the night. Such grace and humility. Plus that wonderful accent. Now I am also wondering whether we will get any more of The Knick as I have so many hopes for Cornelia.

Stay tuned for part 2 of our Oscar coverage.

Best of the 47th NAACP Image Awards Red Carpet

6 Feb

Award season continues with the 47th NAACP Image Awards and it was a very good night for Empire and Black-ish in the TV categories with American Crime and Scandal also getting some recognition. For a full list of the winners head here.

Some of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s best dressed regulars made an appearance and below are our looks of the night.Viola Davis and Kerry WashingtonWhile neither Kerry Washington nor Viola Davis won Best Actress in a Drama (Taraji P. Henson took home the prize), they both look terrific in white gowns with a sparkly twist. For Kerry Washington it’s a draped neck Victoria Beckham with a sliver of silver and Viola Davis is a vision in a St. John. Excellent purple lipstick to boot.Tracee Ellis RossTracee Ellis Ross is serving up Morticia Addams excellence in Rubin Singer and now that is something I really need to see happen. Ross won Best Actress in a Comedy for Black-ish (yeah I still need to catch up).Chrissy Teigen and John LegendHigh leg slits was a big trend of the night and Chrissy Teigen dishes up sexy and demure in Haney. Lipstick points ahoy. John Legend also scrubs up well and he received the Presidential Award for distinguished public service.SerayahSerayah hits the leg slit, long sleeve and cut out trend trifecta and this all works because this black Philipp Plein gown isn’t fussy in any other way. And there is not a whiff of sheer in sight.Gugu Mbatha-RawCanary yellow is my weakness when it comes to frocks (and most clothing) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw looks fabulous in this one. Yara ShahidiYara Shahidi’s teen sartorial reign continues in this stunning patterned gown and she also got to have a young Liv/adult Liv Scandal reunion. Plus a win for Black-ish as Best Comedy. Michael B. JordanEnding things on a very good and handsome note; while we love it when Michael B. Jordan goes for something a little bolder he also slays in the classics. Jordan not only won Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture, but he also received the Entertainer of the Year accolade. Here’s to another really great year for Michael B. Jordan.
