Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Nov

Some of the big trends dominating the latter half of the year are showcased in this week’s “Out of the Box” and a fun mix of fancy/casual events delivers sartorially. Plus talking the Stranger Things publicity tour, movie premieres and striking magazines editorials. We are so lucky that Michelle Pfeiffer has been having a huge 2017, culminating in Murder on the Orient Express. I am a big Poirot/Agatha Christie adaptation fan so I am cautiously excited about this movie—I really love David Suchet’s Poirot.

But something that does not need to be debated or cautiously excited about is Pfeiffer at the London premiere in a stunning silver Prada gown.
Daisy Ridley is going to be wearing a lot of fancy frocks over the next couple of months and she is kicking things off in glamorous style in jade-green Vivienne Westwood Couture. For more from Ridley scroll to the bottom of this post.Thor: Ragnarok is great and it is the rare Marvel film where you can hear the director’s voice—both literally and figuratively. Here is Taika Waititi hamming it up at a screening of his new movie and this is another case where he’s giving great style. And white denim jackets are not the easiest thing to pull off.It is that time of year when awards start coming thick and fast; the start of a very long season for those actors that might get an Oscar nomination. Allison Janney is one such person and here she is at the third annual Carney Awards starting things low-key, but jazzing it up enough with her choice of jewelry.
Cold-shoulders and deconstructed shirts were the two (terrible) trends of 2017. Now it seems that every sweater, top and dress is finding it necessary to have some kind of lace/tie/ribbon on it. I am not mad about all of it, but I think I might be in a few months time.

Kathryn Hahn at the A Bad Moms Christmas premiere gets the good end of the ribbon deal in Alberta Ferretti.

Jessica Williams mixes two of my fave thing—preppy and twee—in Creatures of Comfort at the opening of The Wing in Soho.  The Stranger Things teens are still everywhere promoting the second season and the boys continue to do the casual thing with aplomb. There has been concern about Millie Bobby Brown’s schedule and any regular reader of Lainey Gossip will be very aware of this. There have been so many child/teen stars that have burned out far too young and hopefully Brown will not be another cautionary tale.

In terms of styling before this promo tour Brown’s look was pretty age appropriate and as the Fug Girls point out it is now veering into the other end of this scale. Here, I think her Giamba outfit is a good mix of high fashion/fun and Sadie Sink’s ensemble is doing it, but without doing the most. Dressing when you are a regular teen is hard enough and I can’t imagine going through this awkward stage with this many eyes on you.  Frances Ha was my favorite film of 2013 and suffice to say I couldn’t be more excited about Lady Bird. There are a lot of Greta Gerwig profiles out this week and I couldn’t be more thrilled; both the New York Magazine and New York Times ones are excellent. The above photo is courtesy of Interview and regular readers will know how much I adore their editorial style.

Gerwig is interviewed by Francis Ford Coppola and it is an insightful conversation about Gerwig’s childhood, influences and process including this gem about the rehearsal process. I also love 20th Century Women so this anecdote really speaks to me. And this gif is a necessary accompaniment to her tale.

“It wasn’t just working with the lines; it was also a lot of talking and investigation. I would have them all dance together, because when I worked with Mike Mills, he had us do that. I found it useful because it makes you less embarrassed of your body and less embarrassed in front of other people, so I stole that from him.”

The below sentiment also applies to how I pitch. I am so bad at explaining an idea in its initial stage.

“I’ve found that if I can explain it to someone early, it’s going to be terrible. You have to give the hunch time to grow in the dark, because otherwise—let’s say you pitch it to a friend really early—it dies.”Solange shines bright for Glamour as one of their Women of the Year in matching sequined Gucci top/pants and Stuart Weitzman boots. Perfect level of sparkle for this time of year.

The whole essay is super inspiring, but this really resonates:

“There’s such a dated, tired narrative that women are taking a risk by standing up for themselves, writing their own narratives, and having control over their bodies. But I felt so much freedom in speaking my truth. I no longer wanted to stay silent. I didn’t care what I had to lose. I started to weigh what the risks of not telling my truth were versus burning bridges that needed to be burned.”The best cover Entertainment Weekly has done in an age; the colors/clothes/everything about it. Constance Wu and Henry Golding look fabulous. I really need to read this book before the movie comes out. As I mentioned near the top of this week’s “Out of the Box,” Daisy Ridley is going to be everywhere for the next two months—much to my delight—with both Murder on the Orient Express and The Last Jedi. I really love this cover and the whole ’80s direction of this editorial. Also, the interview is conducted by none other than Adam Driver and it is delightful.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

27 Oct

Bold pattern and color dominate this week’s “Out of the Box” rundown with stripes, florals and a variety of other fun prints. We’re in the pre movie award season gauntlet and magazines continue to celebrate the best of the year (even though it is only October).

Oh, and Stranger Things is back today, but I am sure you are probably already aware of this.

For all things Halloween TV from teen shows in the ’90s check out my round-up here. And I also interviewed 1922 costume designer Claudia Da Ponte about dressing for horror.“Women like looking sexy, but it doesn’t mean we want to fuck you.” Stitch Cate Blanchett’s words onto a cushion and I will visit your Etsy store. At the InStyle Awards, Cate Blanchett gave a blistering speech and as with last week’s Elle celebration, this is exactly the kind of thing I need to hear right now.

Blanchett was given the Style Icon Award and her striped Givenchy frock shows exactly why this was the right choice; she looks cool af posing next to Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi and he is also showing off his trademark sartorial prowess.  One of my favorite designers is Mary Katrantzou as her looks are never boring; this is once again the case at the InStyle Awards and this mixed textured frock on Lauren Cohan is serving up a heap of dramatic flair. Great lip color from the Walking Dead star too.Happy Stranger Things Day! At the premiere last night the younger teens show how to do the whole red carpet thing as they continue to embrace the fun side of fashion. From colorful pants to all the flashy accouterments; they have this thing down. Caleb McLaughlin has the perfect answer to the LA heatwave in shorts and Finn Wolfhard is giving off super ’70s vibes in a Prada turtleneck and suit.

Joined by season 2 newcomer Sadie Sink dressed in a very cute Chanel. Millie Bobby Brown’s leather Calvin Klein frock is maybe not the best idea considering the weather and it is a slightly more edgy look than her usual offerings, but it still feels age appropriate. Of course they all have stylists, but their individual personalities are still shining through. Combining two of my favorite trends—florals and ladysuits—is Kerry Washington at the 2017 GLSEN Respect Awards in Roberto Cavalli Resort 2018. This is a lot of suit to pull of and Washington does just that.

My only quibble is I wish it was hemmed slightly higher as we’re probably missing out on some fabulous shoes. Issa Rae joined CoverGirl senior vice president Ukonwa Ojo at the Fast Company Innovation Festival and both women went super colorful with their outfit choices; bold tones are not just for summer.

Ojo paired her canary yellow with leopard print pumps and Rae has gone full sequin trend in Diane von Furstenberg. It reminds me of another Issa Rae stunning outfit from 2017.Wearing all Kate Spade New York at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund show is a very fun spin on the whole preppy look and this is a sartorial path Laverne Cox doesn’t often take. It is a super cute look on her and I am definitely coveting this dress.Jenna Coleman could step right into the 1960s scenes of Outlander in this head-to-toe Burberry ensemble at the BAFTA Breakthrough Brits reception. It is also part Audrey Horne school uniform chic with a dash of ’90s with those red laced boots. A very fun segment on Late Night with Seth Meyers is “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” and the latest edition is no different.

I would also very much like to know where Amber Ruffin’s shirt is from because it is an astronomical delight. In other excellent Amber Ruffin news; she is looking to making the switch from late night to prime time and I am thrilled.Bookending this week’s “Out of the Box” with Cate Blanchett. Here she shares the cover of Australian Vogue with Thor: Ragnarok co-star Chris Hemsworth. A shot that is both moody in focus but fun in fashion and set-up. Also this new Thor is ridiculously enjoyable and had me laughing throughout. Some really fabulous costuming from Mayes C. Rubeo.

Best of the Emmys 2017 Style: Bold Color and Shimmer

18 Sep

Welcome to the second part of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Emmy coverage and this is brought to you on four hours sleep and a whole lot of Diet Coke (#notspon).

For all things awards, couples, feathers and more head here. In this post we will be lavishing praise on the colorful and metallic looks of the night. AKA my favorite kind of award show sartorial choices.Pleats make for the best all drama posing and Tessa Thompson in rainbow Rosie Assoulin is quite possibly the best look of the entire night. There’s a bonus ’70s feeling about all of this and I am so ready for the Thor press tour.Viola Davis always gives great vibrant color—it was pink in 2016—and this year’s Emmys are no different. A tangerine dream in custom Zac Posen. One of the show highlights was Tituss Burgess in the Westworld sketch and also this jacket is beyond fantastic.Again the Stranger Things teens continue to show most the adult dudes how it is done; wearing designers from Prada to Ted Baker and Balmain. Getting the edge in the best dressed here is Caleb McLaughlin in a purple brocade Garçon Couture jacket. Nicole Kidman won big on the night in more ways than one as she picked up for Best Actress in a mini-series and as producer on Big Little Lies. She was also wearing maybe her best look of a very busy 2017 in red Calvin Klein by Appointment. Also favoring crimson is Issa Rae in custom Vera Wang; I’m not wild about the sleeves but from the back this dress is divine. If you are a regular watched of Gina Rodriguez’s Instagram Stories then you have probably seen her use a pull up bar on her door frame. It took her a few attempts, but she can now work it like a pro and she even did so in this super sexy Naeem Khan frock. And along with Busy Philipps, she very much makes me want to exercise more.Yara Shahidi once again does something different and you can never predict what red carpet direction she will opt for. This time she goes ethereal in Prada.Last year Sarah Paulson wowed in green sequined Prada and she’s gone the sparkly route again in Carolina Herrera. It doesn’t quite deliver the same knockout levels, but I do love the drama of the puffed out sleeves. For my fave silver sequins of the night look no further than Anna Chlumsky in custom Sachin & Babi.

Emmys GIFs - Find & Share on GIPHY

Chlumsky also gave the best reaction to the worst moment and her very ’90s styling on Halt and Catch Fire is every level flashback inducing.Mixing florals and metallics is Queen Regina King in a plunging Galia Lahav Couture gown and those DVANI diamond starburst earrings are making me wish I had pierced ears.Another flaming hot Naeem Khan dress and Laverne Cox is a dripped in silver delight.Kiernan Shipka has been coming to the Emmys since 2010 and this is an instant way to feel old—as pointed out with this helpful visual from Jarett Wieselmen. This Miu Miu gown is simple, elegant and very pretty.Another teen hitting all the right sartorial notes is Millie Bobby Brown in Calvin Klein by Appointment. This gives off a princess vibe without feeling too saccharine.Millennial pink for Samira Wiley in custom Christian Siriano and I love the cut of this gown.Another very different ladysuit from Evan Rachel Wood in striking wide-legged Jeremy Scott for Moschino. She looks like a fabulous ringmaster.

2017 SDCC Panel, Party and Interview Style Highlights

23 Jul

A very busy weekend for both TV and film at SDCC with lots of new trailers to click on (including the Stranger Things, which you can watch below) and plenty of panel fashion delights.

As I mentioned on Friday, the kind of outfits chosen for Comic-Con are right in my style wheelhouse. And this year did not disappoint. The Game of Thrones panel traditionally reveals very little, but where it lacked in new news it made up for with my favorite kind of outfit; yes the ladysuit.

The first glimpse I had of Sophie Turner in this amazing plaid number was an out loud scream moment. And it is still is.
And Gwendoline Christie is working another amazing oversized suit in pale blue Bella Freud. More menswear inspired looks and Cate Blanchett works a different kind of plaid in Monse, with the level of sartorial cool you would expect from this style icon. A red racing stripe and gold shoes really top this off.

Plus for the best in Cate Blanchett and Harry Styles check out the best thread on Twitter. Switching gears from ladysuits to fabulous frocks and jumpsuits that deliver on an explosion of color, print and texture at the Marvel panel.

Lupita’s Elie Saab Resort has me longing for a cocktail (good job I’m going out for brunch soon) and Danai Gurira is working the very on trend plaid with a twist. Letitia Wright is keeping things simple in white sneakers and a white frock; I cannot wait for this press tour. Also at Marvel yesterday; so much style yes from Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi. This is how you do it.
Style Queen Ruth Negga and constant TV Ate My Wardrobe presence looks cool as fuck on the IMDb yacht in a beautiful dress by The Vampire’s Wife. And I now want everything by this brand. As the Fug Girls like to say, everyone looks hotter in sunglasses and the Preacher cast live up to these accessory related words of wisdom. This is a show that gives great shades and style; season 2 has been a lot of fun so far and it is one of my favorite things on at the moment.

Working that strong collar is Naomi Watts, ticking another one of my big sartorial boxes and this is a very fun photo with Kyle MacLachlan.

Watts has been crushing the Insta game of late and also gave a different kind of insight into the mind of David Lynch through text convo revelations.I’m looking forward to seeing these three team up in The Defenders and while I’m not in love with Mike Colter’s hat, he gets a pass as sometimes bad hats happen to good people.

Krysten Ritter has also been giving great Insta and from this alone I’ve decided I now ship Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones. Oh, hi Charlie Cox.In actors I adore news; here is Judy Greer and Corey Stoll at the Entertainment Weekly and FX After Dark party. Greer is vision in gingham and also a really great addition to Casual this season. The Stranger Things kids always look like they have the most energy and there’s a lot of great patterns here (including newcomer Sadie Sink’s floral frock).

And while I do have Stranger Things fatigue because it has got quite exhausting talking about this show, they have delivered a really intriguing trailer.

And again the nostalgic elements of growing up in this period have been captured. Of course I will be watching and writing about it come October. More florals and Stranger Things from Natalia Dyer in a super cute red poppy number.

More Miu Miu delights for Karen Gillan and some super stacked platforms. And a good place to end.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Feb

The SAG Awards delivered on both speeches and fashion this weekend and on this week’s “Out of the Box” we’ve got a whole lot of great outfits from the Entertainment Weekly pre-SAG party with a dash of the PGA Awards, the beginning of the end for Girls, a new campaign and a very important announcement.yara-shahidi-ewYara Shahidi was our best dressed at the SAG Awards in an incredible striped Naeem Khan frock and at the pre-SAG EW party she went in a very different, but just as fun direction. All baby blues from eye makeup to the abstract print matching Sophie Theallet shirt and pants.kristen-schaalFor all things wacky and delightful look no further than Kristen Schaal and her amazing kitty dress. I love everything about this. Also super cute gold shoes that I would like in my life.malin-akermanMalin Akerman serving up full shoulder drama in metallic striped Zhivago and this is the kind of dress you wear when you want to throw a drink in someone’s face. Or just look cool as fuck.grace-gealey-and-candice-pattonPatterned ladysuit alert with Grace Byers going full plunge in Keti Chkhikvadze and in very cute dress news we have Candice Patton in Tommy Hilfiger. That collar is everything (and now I am looking at dresses on the Tommy Hilfiger website and am very tempted by this).the-crownWhile I very much preferred both Vanessa Kirby and Claire Foy’s SAG ceremony outfits, I also couldn’t pass up this opportunity to post this picture of a much happier (and more alive in some cases) family from The Crown. Lipstick points for Kirby and Foy too.stranger-teensThe Stranger Things cast tends to be split between the kids and the teens when posing for photos; here at the EW party Natalia Dyer instead hangs with her onscreen younger brother and his friends and once again the boys look super swish in their suits. Especially Caleb McLaughlin in bow tie and waistcoat. Dyer’s super floral mini is another very cute Miu Miu and this brand is working like a charm on her.miles-brown-and-caleb-mclaughlinDancing cuties and Stranger Things meets Black-ish. Blue shoes are a must at the pre-SAG party for Caleb McLaughlin and Miles Brown.sag-dancingMore fabulous shoes and moves from the boys at a SAG after party and they’re joined by Janelle Monàe.stranger-dancingAnd now with Samira Wiley and the rest of the Stranger Things kids. Post awards dancing photos are the best.rami-malekThe night before the SAGs Rami Malek went a little more classic in his choice of Dior suit and he also appears to have adopted the signature Eddie Redmayne lean.girls-thrGoing full Friends cast shot as The Hollywood Reporter celebrates Girls with an oral history and a cover featuring the core cast. This is a really well styled shoot and I now have Lost in Translation like questions as I wonder what Adam Driver is whispering into Andrew Rannells’ ear. kenzoKenzo’s new Spring 2017 campaign features Tracee Ellis Ross, Jesse Williams and cellist/singer Kelsey Lu. A short film called “Music is My Mistress” will be released next Thursday (February 9) and if these print ads are any indication it is going to be pretty special.yara-shahidi-ivy-parkAnd in other fantastic campaign news; here is Yara Shahidi for Ivy Park and this oversized sweater/short shorts look is great. Shahidi appeared in Lemonade and re-teaming with Beyoncé for her clothing brand makes so much sense.

Also thank you Beyoncé for giving us something to be happy about this week. And I love that her underwear is not matching. Also where can I get that bra?

Best of the 2017 SAG Red Carpet: Suits, Velvet and More

30 Jan

Now for part 2 of the TV Ate My Wardrobe SAG coverage. For speech highlights and all things that sparkle head here. On the menu we have plenty of suits, a whole lot velvet, the kids from Stranger Things and some classic style. maisie-williamsMaisie Williams looks like a 1940s movie starlet in a light pink satin Charlie Brear dress and now I want to see her in something set in this period.

Also, thanks to Racked for this lipstick post which includes details of how to get Maisie (and Evan Rachel Wood’s) killer lip color. evan-rachel-woodMore ladysuit goodness from Evan Rachel Wood and this time she has opted for a midnight blue double-breasted velvet by Altuzarra. This kicks off the big velvet trend of the night and I am all for this material making a comeback.judith-lightQueen Judith Light also taking in the blue velvet (*cue song*) and crushing it in Tom Ford.kirsten-dunstNewly engaged Kirsten Dunst (sadly no Jesse Plemons on the red carpet) looks like she might have wedding dresses on her mind and this Dior would work down the aisle, but isn’t so bridal that it is out of place here. The combination of the statement necklaces and metallic straps works like a charm.sarah-paulson-sagSarah Paulson has been all about the sparkles of late, but for the SAG awards she went classic in a black strapless Vera Wang dress and an amazing ivory cape. Red lipstick and big earrings are the way to go here.

I mentioned it in the first post already and yet it is worth repeating that in Sarah Paulson’s speech she mentioned donating to the ACLU and you can do that here.mahershala-aliAnother speech I highlighted in part 1 of this SAG coverage was Mahershala Ali’s, which is both emotional and important. Ali continues his super suave domination and this time he wears a Ermenegildo Zegna Couture white tuxedo.michiel-husimanMore velvet and all the swoons because Michiel Huisman.rami-malekAn Ilaria Urbinati double bill coming your way and first up Rami Malek in a Dior suit that stands out and works because he is Rami Malek.riz-ahmedA touch of velvet is sometimes all you need as Riz Ahmed shows with the lapels on his Zegna tux.glen-powellFor delightfully classic in his tuxedo choice there is Glenn Powell.simon-helberg-and-jocelyn-towneThe most overt political statement on the SAG red carpet came from Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg and wife Jocelyn Towne who wore her feelings across her chest. Kudos to them for not keeping quiet and using this very public opportunity to demonstrate. It feels weird to bring fashion into this moment, but Helberg is also doing the velvet thing and it looks great on him. transparentLeopard print ladysuit! And Amy Landecker wasn’t the only person wearing this bold St John number and leopard continues to dominate. More blue velvet too from the Transparent cast and Alexandra Billings’ feather touch is fabulous. Oh hey Jay, you look lovely too.stranger-teensBarb got to come play! Stranger Things teens (well one of them is still a teen in this case – looking at you Shannon Purser) and the height of Joe Keery’s hair is maybe bigger than Jean Ralphio’s and I don’t know how that is possible. Natalia Dyer’s custom Miu Miu is both delicate and bold and I love that Shannon Purser has gone full black gown and red lip.stranger-kidsStranger Things kids continue to have the most fun and somehow it is still super charming. They’re also still some of the best dressed people on the red carpet in brands that are affordable (see Finn Wolfhard’s teal Topman suit) and on the splurge end with Millie Bobby Brown in red Armani.

Best of the 2017 Golden Globes: Ladysuits, Best Besties, Capes and Color

9 Jan

Welcome to the TV Ate My Wardrobe coverage of the Golden Globes red carpet; there will be three posts covering the best looks of the night in which a whole lot of my favorite trends took center stage.

Let’s get to it!erwRegular (and probably not so regular) readers will know how much I love a ladysuit and when ladysuit queen Evan Rachel Wood hit the red carpet in custom Altuzarra my jaw dropped. Wood is serving up so much Marlene Dietrich perfection and this is what she said about the tux choice:

“I’ve been to the Globes six times. I’ve worn a dress every time. And I love dresses, I’m not trying to protest dress. But I want to make sure that young girls and women know they aren’t a requirement and that you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. To just be yourself because your worth is more than that.”kathryn-hahnAlso going for a ladysuit is Kathryn Hahn and if I could just put a flames emoji here then I would because this is smoking hot. mandy-mooreFrom one of my favorite red carpet trends to another and Mandy Moore’s going full caped and plunging drama in Naeem Khan.viola-davisThis post could pretty much be an updated rendition of “My Favorite Things” and Viola Davis once again crushed both the dress and speech (twice!) game.brie-larsonGoing classic crimson siren in Rodarte and last year’s Best Actress winner Brie Larson also has the red lipstick of my dreams.caitriona-balfeNow for something different and Caitriona Balfe once again shows that she looks stunning in every kind of frock including this difficult to pull off navy and orange Delpozo.busy-philipps-and-michelle-williamsAward season when Michelle Williams is nominated gives us a window into TV Ate My Wardrobe’s fave IRL besties and the Golden Globes/Busy Philipps’ Instagram did not disappoint.

Dress wise and I am so here for everything about Busy’s Stella McCartney florals. Less so with Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton and I would get rid of the ribbon choker (the one major ’90s fashion trend that needs to go away) and cut off the sleeves.diego-luna-and-ggbOh, hello.

Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal’s friendship is one for the ages and for the swoons.stranger-thingsStranger Things kids keep on with their dressing better than a lot of their adult counterparts aka the Jacob Tremblay award.

maisie-and-sophieThey haven’t shared the Game of Thrones screen since season 1, but Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner thankfully have all this red carpet time together so we can see just how important they are. Including adjusting Maisie’s amazing yellow Ong Oaj Pairam frock and hiding most of Sophie’s sheer nightmare.

Stay tuned for more from the Golden Globes!

Best of TV Costuming 2016: Work in Other Places

22 Dec

So 2016 has been bit of an emotional roller coaster on a large global scale and a personal one with moments of so much joy and immense sadness.

Writing wise this has been my best year yet as I finally got over my pitching fears (well, mostly) and have a weekly TV and Style column at The Observer where I have discussed numerous shows and costume moments beginning with Girls back in February. I have also contributed to Collider with several Americans essays and a TV themed gift guide (still time to buy!).

Here is a selection of my favorite pieces of work from 2016 including a personal essay, topics I have been obsessed with for a long time, discussing so many different shows from this year (with a dash of the ’90s) and I also got to interview two amazing costume designers.Outlander Season 2 2016Kicking off with the essay that was incredibly hard to write, but also gave me great comfort after my father passed away in July. I got married in September and in the lead up I knew it would be a very happy day tinged with sadness and writing about Outlander, my father and our shared heritage helped.

I don’t tend to be someone who is good with sharing my deepest feelings and personal essays are an uneasy prospect: however connecting to the work of Terry Dresbach and the Outlander team led to an outpouring of words.the americansI wrote about The Americans a lot in 2016 both here and other places. I spoke to costume designer Katie Irish at the start of the fourth season about Coach, the many coats and other costume design disguise secrets.

For Collider I went deep about Elizabeth Jennings and motherhood, why the teens on this show don’t fall into the usual annoying obstacle trap and looked at how the Cold War is making a comeback on TV (this was before other significant events).westworldOne of the most fulfilling experiences of 2016 was talking to Westworld costume designer Ane Crabtree after the season finale. Part of this is because I have been writing about Crabtree’s work since TV Ate My Wardrobe started with Masters of Sex and because of all the anecdotes and insight I got from this phone conversation.fleabagOne of the first pieces I wrote on TV Ate My Wardrobe was about lipstick on TV/film and I expanded upon this idea while discussing the Empire CoverGirl line and how powerful make-up can be.

Other key lipstick essays include two of my favorite shows of the year with how Fleabag paints over the cracks and the portrayal of women working in the tech industry in the ’80s on Halt and Catch Fire. And the time jump on Halt and Catch Fire allowed me to address my own nostalgia and one of my favorite style decades.img_4381In a similar vein, but at the end of the scale the build up to new Gilmore Girls was the perfect time to address all the fashion mishaps of the early ’00s.

BrainDead is one of my favorite shows of the year for being fun, weird, having so much flames chemistry and rethinking how to do a “previously on.” Plus it gave me so many outfit goals and I got to expand on this further heregame-of-thronesAnd now for my most viewed article, which also happens to be one of my favorite costume moments of the year when Sansa made sure Jon knew he was family by making him a very Ned fur.

Also on the subject of Game of Thrones I previewed the “Battle of the Bastards” with a ‘Who wore it better?’ competition and went all in on Cersei’s power move ensemble.

On the pieces I have wanted to write about forever track; Angela singing on Mr. Robot let me go all in on the sadness karaoke essay that has been itching to come out since Eliza sang “Chandelier” on Selfie.

The second season of Mr. Robot was messy in places, but the women delivered and it gave me plenty to write about from a costuming perspective. Oh and everyone looks hotter in sunglasses as the Fug Girls always say.felicity-and-marciaA tale of two haircuts and I am very proud of finding a very strong link between Keri Russell’s infamous Felicity haircut and Marcia Clark’s mid-trial makeover. American Crime Story’s “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia” is one of my favorite episodes of TV this year and exploring the legacies of a style change was incredibly fulfilling.

I binged the first season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend the week after my dad died and it was a much needed distraction so I will forever be grateful for Rachel Bloom and Rebecca Bunch. Season 2 has also provided some very interesting talking points including portrayals of lady friendships and makeovers. Plus Rebecca’s imagination delivers on plenty of fun costume changes.

Here’s to more in 2017 and for my author pages at The Observer and Collider head here and here.

For individual costume highlights check out Best of the Rest Parts 1 and 2.

Best of TV Costuming 2016: Best of the Rest Part 1

16 Dec

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2016” costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking; we want to celebrate the work of television’s best costume designers.

This week we kicked off our end of year coverage with a deep dive into the Jennifer disguise on The Americans and how it encapsulates the vulnerability that is creeping in.

Today we’re going to switch things up and take a broad look at some of the individual costume standout moments with entries from Game of ThronesPreacherBroad CityGood Girls Revolt and more.

Stay tuned for part 2 next week.img_4802img_4801Most on Point Family Accessorizing

Sansa and Jon Snow did not appear on screen in conversation with each other before season 6 and yet when these two Stark children (cousins not siblings) were reunited the room got very misty all of a sudden. Starks finding each other has been a long time coming as there have been so many near misses over the seasons. To show loyalty Sansa gifted Jon with a fur just like their dad/uncle wore and made herself a fetching new dress complete with wolf sigil. The Starks are back and their little sister/cousin is also hopefully on her way home too.

Okay so things got a little messy with Sansa withholding important information, but in this moment at Castle Black they were at one with each other and their family heritage. For more on this Game of Thrones season 6 moment check out my essay at The Observer.

img_2888The Most Ilana Wexler Use for a Dog Hoodie

I remember seeing this dog hoodie in American Apparel about two weeks before this Broad City season 3 trailer came out and also initially thought it was for an adult (I put the small size down to it being American Apparel). This sight gag was perfect; right down to Ilana thinking the ear holes were for her hair and this sums up Ilana’s carefree (and cropped top loving) attitude toward fashion.

img_4411Best ’90s

The big ’90s fashion resurgence continued with gusto this year and Halt and Catch Fire delivered on a very time specific ensemble that wouldn’t look out of place in a current Topshop display. Ah, the cyclical nature of style.

Also this shot is great as it shows that costume designer Kathryn Morrison linked Cam and Joe together in black and white, but put distance between them as their outfits are the negative image of each other.img_3326 img_3325The Felicity ‘Queen of Sweaters’ Award

There is no doubt that Felicity Porter is the Queen of Sweaters and Keri Russell takes this title once again on The Americans. As this is a winter set show the knitwear levels are high and when I spoke to costume designer Katie Irish she explained that cable knits were one bump concealing solution. And for when the Jennings family go bowling, Elizabeth looks like she borrowed this one straight from Felicity’s closet.img_4617Bringing the Black Turtleneck Drama

Everyone needs a black turtleneck and Queen Judith Light (official title) delivers on the drama in this black turtleneck in front of a black backdrop on this season of Transparent. Yes I would buy tickets to her one-woman show (both IRL and Shelly Pfefferman’s).good-girls-revolt-1-02Cape Most Coveted

I love a cape. I love late ’60s fashion. I love knitwear. It is not surprising then that as soon as I saw Cindy’s green number in the second episode of Good Girls Revolt I wished for knitting skills. Amazon sadly hasn’t renewed this show and I’m hoping it will find a new home elsewhere; it still feels like there is a lot of story to tell and it was only just getting going. Plus I need my fashion fix from this era (especially as Masters of Sex has now also come to an end).tulipSunglasses I Need in My Life: The 2016 Edition

This year I picked up some very Gretchen sunglasses and there is another shades wearer to look to; Tulip from Preacher joined my list of TV style icons and Ruth Negga is also high up on the IRL style icons list after a run of red carpet and Vogue sartorial highs. Part of Tulip’s cool as fuck look is down to her choice of frames and her mix of feminine florals, cropped tops, cute formal wear and edgy leather makes her a costume standout in 2016.img_3965

Teen Bedroom Photo Accuracy

N.B. This is more an interior/production design award, but definitely worthy of a mention here.

There are a couple of reasons this very small moment in Stranger Things stood out to me; in part it is down to the very teen bedroom photo collage thing that always hits those nostalgia points and the other is because they took photos and didn’t just rely on stilted promo shots. There is nothing that takes me out of something quicker than awful photoshop on a picture (see Spectre for a recent offender) or if they have just taken a still from the promotional department; it really doesn’t take long to get results like this. Although I am now wondering why Nancy has two identical sets of the same photo booth shots. Oh hey, Barb those orange framed sunglasses are cute.

Best of the 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards Red Carpet

12 Dec

On the awards show rankings the Critics’ Choice Awards are mid-table at best, but they definitely deliver on the red carpet front and they happen to come nice and early in the cycle. Plus the combination of TV and film means this is a rather long round-up featuring ladysuits, so many florals, dudes in colorful/playful suits and some daring patterns.

For a full list of winners head here and check out this special appreciation post. Oh and the Golden Globe nominations will be announced later today!evan-rachel-woodEvan Rachel Wood has given us A+ cowgirl chic this year and she’s also high up on the #LadySuitWatch2016 rankings as she has delivered all year. Rounding 2016 out with this classic black belted Altuzarra stunner and I am full heart eyes for this.janelle-monaeJanelle Monáe goes big in a fantastic Nicci Hou gown that is giving me Alice in Wonderland adjacent vibes. Great lipstick choice too.portia-doubledayLove, love, love Portia Doubleday serving up glitzy futuristic seventies vibes in this long sleeve Jenny Packham number. allison-williamsQuickly followed by a gown that totally complements it and I would love to see Doubleday standing next to Allison Williams decked out in Balmain Resort; perhaps in a Studio 54 inspired shoot.  hailee-steinfeldHitting the floral portion of the red carpet and this is also a good time to say how much I love Edge of Seventeen and Hailee Steinfeld’s performance. This is a really fabulous Jason Wu gown and Steinfeld gets double bonus points because pockets and red lipstick.gillian-jacobsA playful twist on the botanic theme and there is so much about this Delpozo frock that shouldn’t work including the jagged hemline, but it looks fantastic on Gillian Jacobs.constance-wuConstance Wu demonstrates another fun structured take on flowers in Johanna Ortiz Resort and the splash of red on both the gown and with her lipstick really makes this pop.chrissy-metzThis is Us star Chrissy Metz also delivers strong on this very on trend pattern with a spin that feels winter appropriate. cynthia-nixonA striking mix of pink and red for Cynthia Nixon that stands out from all the blue on this red (okay it is actually blue) carpet.viola-davisViola Davis looks super sophisticated in a sparkly Michael Kors column dress and she never disappoints. Glad she has such a strong awards presence this year for both TV and movies.sarah-paulson-and-amanda-peetNow this is a power couple I want to see on screen with two very fun takes on the whole white dress thing that goes beyond bridal with Sarah Paulson in embellished Vera Wang and Amanda Peet in black and white. Both ladies also go bold with their lip color, much to my delight. er-reunionMaura Tierney gives casual cool ladysuit vibes in Styland and this pairing is giving me so many E.R. related feelings. For more Linda Cardellini reunion feels from the Critics’ Choice Awards head here.judith-lightBow down to Judith Light, always. shiri-appleby-and-constance-zimmerEverything looks so much happier IRL for this pair; Shiri Appleby in a sparkly Monique Lhuillier and Constance Zimmer’s sleek John Paul Ataker dress perfectly complement each other.stranger-thingsThe Stranger Things kids double down on their style domination and replace Jacob Tremblay as the kid to watch on this red carpet this year. rami-malekAnd Rami Malek continues his forever streak (hat tip to Ilaria Urbinati) of wearing interesting ensembles on the red carpet; this time in velvet green Burberry and Louboutin shoes.james-marsdenJames Marsden goes big in Salvatore Ferragamo and over the years he has shown how fond he is of grey plaid; we are very much here for this choice and the level of appreciation he is getting this year.sarah-paulson-and-sterling-k-brownLeaving on this because feelings and Sterling K. Brown is another dude who delivers on the non-black suit thing.
