Best of the 2018 SAG Awards: Sparkle Motion

22 Jan

Happy Monday! And now time for more awards. The SAG Awards is always a slightly more relaxed occasion than the Oscars, style choices reflect this because while it is still a fancy affair there is also less pressure to wear the gown. So what we get is bold ensembles often playing with color and texture.

One of the big trends so far this year has been sequins and metallics aplenty.  Check out the first part of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s SAG coverage below, which includes lots of fun pairings and group shots. Allison Janney looks like a warrior in sequined armor in custom Yanina Couture. A sleek look with dramatic shoulders to match. And in a very different, but just as effective spin on sequins is Danielle Brooks in an ombre Marc Bouwer gown.Another double delight, Lupita Nyong’o is also working the dark silver trend in Ralph & Russo complete with feathers. Yara Shahidi continues to stun in what looks like a classic black jumpsuit and tuxedo jacket. But wait! This Ralph Lauren Collection ensemble has surprise train and Shahidi is very much pulling it off. Bonus berry lipstick points too. Team Lady Bird all got the sparkle memo and have each put their own spin on it. Well, not Timothée Chalamet, but he’s got the red racing pant stripe thing working for him in Calvin Klein. Laurie Metcalf’s Sachin & Babi is the most traditional of the three and also my favorite.

Saoirse Ronan continues to switch up her look for pretty much every award show this time opting for Louis Vuitton. Studded Bottega Veneta is giving me slight ’70s vibes on Greta Gerwig, which I am of course here for.And now for another version of the metallic trend—there are so many—from Emily V. Gordon. And I really hope The Big Sick is nominated tomorrow because I would love to see a) the film get recognized and b) Emily and Kumail on that red carpet. Plaid but make it metallic. Betty Gabriel looks fantastic in Phuong My alongside Get Out co-star Bradley Whitford and his IRL gf Amy Landecker. The Stranger Things older teens (actually in their ’20s) are super coordinated with Natalia Dyer standing out in astrology inspired Christian Dior couture. Is it me or is Dacre Montgomery pulling off the pencil ‘tache? He looks like a dandy in Giorgio Armani and he managed to do up almost all his buttons.  Joe Keery keeps it classic in Saint Laurent. The really stylish member of the Stranger Things cast are the younger teens and they continue to experiment with formal fashion with aplomb. Caleb McLaughlin mixes a white Dior jacket with checked Antonio Marras pants and looks fabulous. A velvet suit is one of my favorite things, but a green velvet suit is next level and Noah Schnapp delights in Stella McCartney. And Gaten Matarazzo goes for a classic Kenneth Cole tux. *starts singing* “I believe the children are our future”

Yara Shahidi and Tracee Ellis Ross aren’t the only stylish members of the Black-ish cast; Marsai Martin in burgundy Miri Couture and Miles Brown in a MSGM tux with a floral pin tie excel at the fun formal wear. Keeping with this kids dressing better than adults theme. Sterling K. Brown is super stylish and crushes it at every event, Lonnie Chavis plays young Randall on This is Us and this Dolce & Gabbana tux might be the best of the night.Paying homage to her GLOW costuming in what turns out to not be a custom gown, but something from Dundas pre-fall 2018 collection. Brie fielded a question about allegations against her brother-in-law with grace in a moment that was unexpected from E!Rounding up the first part of this SAG rundown with the GLOW cast showing off a variety of styles; so much color and pattern. I cannot wait for season 2.

2017 Costume Designers Guild Awards Winners and Red Carpet

22 Feb

Celebrating all things costume design at the 19th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards last night in LA at the Beverly Hilton with accolades getting handed out to the best in television, film and short form.

These awards are split into contemporary, fantasy and period, which means that a wide range of work is acknowledged as opposed to say the Academy Awards which tends to lean towards the more period costuming when it comes to which projects are nominated.

The award season juggernaut that is La La Land is one of the rare non-period contenders – it isn’t always period as Jenny Beavan won for Mad Max last year – and it also won last night. And for fantasy it was all about Doctor Strange.

Two of my favorite overall contenders this award season are Hidden Figures and Jackie; both were in the period category and while Madeline Fontaine recently won the BAFTA for her incredible work on Jackie it was Renee Ehrlich Kalfus who was honored by the Costume Designers Guild for her take on the early 1960s.

On the TV side there were some repeat winners with Game of Thrones and American Horror Story taking home the fantasy and contemporary accolades. The Crown’s debut season receiving the period award and the work on all three of these projects is incredible.

The red carpet was also awash with fabulous outfits from designers and those there to celebrate with them. This included some of the actors they dress on a daily basis and I want to take a moment to shine the sartorial light on both.michele-claptonThis is now the third win for Michele Clapton and Game of Thrones (sharing this award with April Ferry this year) as this show continues to dominate all things fantasy. Clapton was behind the incredible Cersei revenge ensemble and she will be returning to Westeros full time this season. This means she has to depart her other winning project and Clapton also won for The Crown last night; I particularly love all things Margaret on The Crown.

Clapton’s geometric patterned gown is a big departure from either GoT or The Crown, but there is a hint of Daenerys with her choice of choker. Plus those all important pockets tick all those boxes.hala-bahmetHala Bahmet is currently working on This is Us and she is responsible for making me want to dress like Mandy Moore in the late ’70s/early ’80s. Here she is giving great black frock and accessories.helen-huang-and-lou-eyrichThis is now Lou Eyrich’s fourth win for American Horror Story and this year she shares this with Helen Huang. I don’t always make it through a whole season of AHS (I’ve only seen Coven and Hotel in their entirety), but the costuming is always next level. As Ryan Murphy’s main costume collaborator it is no surprise to see Eyrich working on Feud and the promo shots from this mini-series are already making me drool all over the keyboard in anticipation.

Eyrich delivers on the dramatic here in a fabulous green ladysuit, oversized glasses and earrings, whereas Helen Huang is going more classic all in black. ane-crabtree-and-jimmi-simpsonAne Crabtree looks like a host from the future in a Westworld park that has yet to be made and I love the high collar detail coupled with the texture and pattern of this frock. And Jimmi Simpson has left the hat at home, but scrubs up well.lily-collinsAt first I thought this was Valentino, but instead it is Alexander McQueen and it is just as intricately beautiful on Lily Collins.amy-landeckerAmy Landecker in another fabulous ladysuit and she injects even more color by pairing it with yellow pumps. Love this entire ensemble.matt-bomerHello, handsome. Matt Bomer serving up a classic look in a white tuxedo jacket as he presents the Lacoste Spotlight Award to his Last Tycoon co-star Lily Collins.mandy-moore-cdgaHost Mandy Moore in red Jenny Packham and also as the human version of the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ kaomoji.

The dress looks really great in this posing in the hotel Instagram shot.octavia-spencer-renee-ehrlich-kalfus-jane-fondaOctavia Spencer with her Hidden Figures costume designer Renee Ehrlich Kalfus and among the many things I was raving about when I came out of this movie was the costume design and this win pleases me immensely.

The composition of this shot is great with Jane Fonda looking on and the image from Hidden Figures showcasing this costume excellence in celebratory poses.

More from the classic black attire category from both Octavia Spencer and Renee Ehrlich Kalfus. mamie-gummer-and-meryl-streepMeryl Streep was presented with the Distinguished Collaborator Award and she wore hot pink Valentino to accept this honor. Daughter Mamie Gummer’s short blonde messy bob and glasses is everything I want right now.lily-tomlin-and-jane-fondaJane Fonda not only delivers on dramatic shoulder in Versace, but she is also serving dramatic face with co-star Lily Tomlin. This photo makes me so happy.

Best of the 2017 SAG Red Carpet: Suits, Velvet and More

30 Jan

Now for part 2 of the TV Ate My Wardrobe SAG coverage. For speech highlights and all things that sparkle head here. On the menu we have plenty of suits, a whole lot velvet, the kids from Stranger Things and some classic style. maisie-williamsMaisie Williams looks like a 1940s movie starlet in a light pink satin Charlie Brear dress and now I want to see her in something set in this period.

Also, thanks to Racked for this lipstick post which includes details of how to get Maisie (and Evan Rachel Wood’s) killer lip color. evan-rachel-woodMore ladysuit goodness from Evan Rachel Wood and this time she has opted for a midnight blue double-breasted velvet by Altuzarra. This kicks off the big velvet trend of the night and I am all for this material making a comeback.judith-lightQueen Judith Light also taking in the blue velvet (*cue song*) and crushing it in Tom Ford.kirsten-dunstNewly engaged Kirsten Dunst (sadly no Jesse Plemons on the red carpet) looks like she might have wedding dresses on her mind and this Dior would work down the aisle, but isn’t so bridal that it is out of place here. The combination of the statement necklaces and metallic straps works like a charm.sarah-paulson-sagSarah Paulson has been all about the sparkles of late, but for the SAG awards she went classic in a black strapless Vera Wang dress and an amazing ivory cape. Red lipstick and big earrings are the way to go here.

I mentioned it in the first post already and yet it is worth repeating that in Sarah Paulson’s speech she mentioned donating to the ACLU and you can do that here.mahershala-aliAnother speech I highlighted in part 1 of this SAG coverage was Mahershala Ali’s, which is both emotional and important. Ali continues his super suave domination and this time he wears a Ermenegildo Zegna Couture white tuxedo.michiel-husimanMore velvet and all the swoons because Michiel Huisman.rami-malekAn Ilaria Urbinati double bill coming your way and first up Rami Malek in a Dior suit that stands out and works because he is Rami Malek.riz-ahmedA touch of velvet is sometimes all you need as Riz Ahmed shows with the lapels on his Zegna tux.glen-powellFor delightfully classic in his tuxedo choice there is Glenn Powell.simon-helberg-and-jocelyn-towneThe most overt political statement on the SAG red carpet came from Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg and wife Jocelyn Towne who wore her feelings across her chest. Kudos to them for not keeping quiet and using this very public opportunity to demonstrate. It feels weird to bring fashion into this moment, but Helberg is also doing the velvet thing and it looks great on him. transparentLeopard print ladysuit! And Amy Landecker wasn’t the only person wearing this bold St John number and leopard continues to dominate. More blue velvet too from the Transparent cast and Alexandra Billings’ feather touch is fabulous. Oh hey Jay, you look lovely too.stranger-teensBarb got to come play! Stranger Things teens (well one of them is still a teen in this case – looking at you Shannon Purser) and the height of Joe Keery’s hair is maybe bigger than Jean Ralphio’s and I don’t know how that is possible. Natalia Dyer’s custom Miu Miu is both delicate and bold and I love that Shannon Purser has gone full black gown and red lip.stranger-kidsStranger Things kids continue to have the most fun and somehow it is still super charming. They’re also still some of the best dressed people on the red carpet in brands that are affordable (see Finn Wolfhard’s teal Topman suit) and on the splurge end with Millie Bobby Brown in red Armani.

From Teen TV to IRL Besties: Celebrating Busy Philipps and Michelle Williams

16 Nov

TV Ate My Wardrobe regular readers will know how much I love it when onscreen friendships blossom into IRL ones and the ultimate version of this is decades long relationships from the teen shows that shaped me; Devon Odessa who played Sharon Cherski on My So-Called Life was one of Claire Danes’ bridesmaids, Keri Russell is still super tight with her Felicity ex-roomie Amanda Foreman and Busy Philipps is often Michelle Williams’ date to big award season events like the Independent Spirit Awards, Oscars (see below) and the Tonysmichelle-williams-and-busy-philippsThe Philipps/Williams friendship is perhaps the most important thing to come out of Dawson’s Creek. Well that and my never ending crush on Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams being my forever hair icon.

Michelle Williams doesn’t have an Instagram, but Busy Philipps often uses her page to celebrate the achievements of her best friend including Broadway achievements and general hangouts. This week Philipps went to a screening of Manchester by the Sea; a movie that is getting a lot of award season buzz with Michelle Williams being hotly tipped in the supporting category. michelle-w-and-busy-pAt the after party a crab cake tray getting dropped all over Philipps led to an early exit that was documented on Philipps’ Instagram Story with Michelle Williams adorably asking if she can swear on this video. Here is a frame from that moment, but alas Insta Stories only last 24 hours before they disappear forever. Trust me, it was a delight.

They also went shopping in Beverley Hills this week and looked super cute while doing so.

michelle-and-busy

Later Busy Philipps wore this outfit to a Madewell event and this is a boozy brunch ideal line-up.

Plaid and stripes 4EVA.oscarsAnd ending things as I often like to with a Jake Gyllenhaal bonus at the 2011 Oscars when Busy Philipps was Michelle Williams’ date for that night too.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 Sep

The big Emmy weekend is coming, but before that we have a bumper “Out of the Box” with more from NYFW, TIFF and some great magazine covers.

For all the best looks from the Creative Arts Emmys held over two night’s last weekend head here.christina-hendricks-naeem-khanThere will be no Mad Men at the Emmys this year, but thankfully the cast has been doing the rounds at NYFW. First we had Jon Hamm rocking the shit out of a Tom Ford suit and now Christina Hendricks is giving off stunning vibes at the Naeem Khan show. There’s something a little nightwear about this and yet it is working. Great lip color too.

Oh and for more Jon Hamm (this time with a bad haircut) check out our brand new Gilmore Girls chat.emily-bluntAt Michael Kors, Emily Blunt also gives great lipstick and ticks all the polka dot and large button boxes. The sleeves are a flare too far for me and I’d like to see the blazer without them, but that is a slight nitpick and I am thrilled we will be seeing a lot more of Blunt in the lead up to The Girl on a Train.cynthia-erivoMore patterned treats on offer at Michael Kors with some A+ pattern clashing from Cynthia Erivo and this time the sleeves are not a cumbersome detail. Between this and BrainDead I want to wear all the super cute bow/tie detail office attire. keri-russellAt the Gemfields in Conversation cocktail party Keri Russell is maybe a magical fashion unicorn in that she looks great in off the shoulder puffy sleeves. This event took place at the hotel where I am staying on honeymoon, which also adds to my excitement levels. Russell is definitely on my Emmy red carpet most anticipated list. david-oyelowo-and-lupita-nyongoMoving on to TIFF and at the Queen of Katwe premiere Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo look stunning in ensembles that strongly nod to the subject of their movie. The bold color of Lupita’s Carolina Herrera gown and head wrap are striking and you can see the intricate detail of the floral aspect of the dress here.

There are a few men we regularly feature when it comes to great red carpet style and Oyelowo is one of them as he has shown on a number of occasions that a black tux is not the only option; here he goes one step further and looks great doing so.lupita-and-david-oyelowoThe pair is also giving great airport style this week.evan-rachel-woodLadysuit treats this week and at the TIFF InStyle/HFPA party Evan Rachel Wood gives great tailoring and peek-a-boo color with green pumps. ruth-neggaTulip from Preacher is one of this year’s TV style icons for her bold mix of edgy with feminine and Ruth Negga has also been showing how it is done on the red carpet. At the same InStyle event, Negga goes for a soft and romantic sartorial choice with an injection of shoe color always does the trick. transparent-screeningAt a screening of Transparent in Washington D.C. – season 3 lands on Amazon Prime Friday, September 23 – there’s a whole lot of looks to love with pleated leather skirts (currently on my clothing wish list), stripes and flowers. Look for more of this cast at the Emmys this weekend.constance-zimmerAt a mid-week Emmy kickoff event Constance Zimmer also does the off the shoulder thing and maybe this is a trend I actually really love. One repeat look I am definitely here for is color pumps and Zimmer nails this one too.julia-louis-dreyfusW Magazine cover star Julia Louis-Dreyfus will also be hitting the red carpet at the weekend and she normally makes our best dressed list; this close up beauty shot is mesmerizing.lupita-vogueOctober continues to deliver on the much better than the September issue covers and Lupita Nyong’o for Vogue is another to add to this list. Shot by Mario Testino in her family’s Kenyan village celebrating Nyong’o’s heritage and this cover and accompanying editorial is stunning. And this might be an “Out of the Box” record with three different looks this week for Lupita.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

7 Aug

TCA continues and so do the cute patterned frocks on this week’s “Out of the Box.” a dash of a couple of other events and magazine covers.

Kerry WashingtonThis kind of reminds me of a colorful version of the wallpaper in Sherlock’s 221b Baker Street, which doesn’t necessarily sound like the compliment it is meant to be. Kerry Washington looks great in Mary Katrantzou at the ABC day at TCA.

Viola DavisViola Davis was also part of the TGIT panel at TCA and she switched out her heels for far more comfy looking flats for the photocall. They might not completely go with this patterned cocktail dress, but I’m all for her continuing this trend.

Elizabeth HenstridgeThere is a lot going on here with Elizabeth Henstridge in House of Holland and yet it manages to stay this side of psychedelic experiment. It feeds into everything I love about a very 70s sleeping bag I once had (but with less orange/brown). Once again this doesn’t sound like the good thing I was intending it too.

Camilla LuddingtonThis outfit is super cute and Camilla Luddington’s lipstick blouse gets added to the list of clothes I need with a makeup motif. Maybe I need to change this to “What Lipstick Top is She Wearing?”

Chace Crawford and Ed WestwickYou know you love me. xoxo

P.S. This really making me want to start that Gossip Girl rewatch that I am always talking about and have no time for right now.

TransparentAt the Transparent panel they announced the season 2 premiere date (December 4!) and Jay Duplass ditched the top button done up styling of his character Josh, while Judith Light is a vision in white.

Joanna FroggattThe Downton Abby cast are starting their final hurrah and Joanne Froggatt stood out at the TCA photocall in Ermanno Scervino’s fun take on houndstooth adding a pop of color with red strappy sandals.

Taraji P HensonAt the Empire panel on Thursday Taraji P. Henson went for simple chic in a long sleeve Cushnie et Ochs teal dress adding oomph to this look with embellished Alaïa sandals.

Christina BaranskiMoving onto the Ricki and the Flash premiere with Christine Baranski killing it off screen as much as she does when she is Diane Lockhart.

Laverne CoxA very fun twist to the standard mini dress from Laverne Cox in Elizabeth & James paired with studded white Louboutins. This blue is really great on her as is the vampy shade of red lipstick.

Christina ApplegateChristina Applegate goes for 70s inspired plunging glam in a stunning Naeem Khan at the 5th Annual Celebration of Dance Gala presented by the Dizzy Feet Foundation.

Idris ElbaIdris Elba is the first guy to appear on the cover of Maxim (this fact surprised me) and boy did they pick a very striking cover image. Never before have I considered buying this magazine, but they might have me with this fantastic editorial including Idris wearing so many good coats.

Jenji KohanThere’s no mistaking who the cover star of Variety’s female showrunner issue is this week with Jenji Kohan’s recognizable specs and colorful hair. This quote from The Affair’s Sarah Treem really resonates “This is not about rah-rah girl power. This is about advice on how to literally run a show and adapt to what you’re given in a way that can make it work. “It’s helpful to have people tell you you’re not crazy to be struggling with it, and also helpful to have people tell you you have to adjust the way you’re working.”

Kirsten DunstA couple of week’s ago I mentioned how my teenage love for Kirsten Dunst was likely to resurface as a result of Fargo season 2 and as if on schedule upon seeing her editorial in the September issue of Town & Country I clapped with glee upon seeing the photos. There’s a little 70s styling in the woodland shots which is entirely appropriate given the setting. In the interview Dunst mentions how she got some helpful advice regarding the TV transition:

“TV is a lot harder than film. A lot harder. When I got the part, my friend Lizzy [Caplan], who is on Masters of Sex, said, ‘Be sure to get B12 shots to get you through the week.’ I was like, ‘Really? That sounds very dramatic, Lizzy.’ By the third week I was all over the B12. It was one of the best roles I’ve ever played—the writing is spectacular—but by the end I was tapped out.”

Dunst also briefly discusses her Fargo character Peggy Blomquist “She is very much like me at my craziest, my mother at her craziest, my grandma at her craziest. I could really combine the nutsiest parts of the women in my family.”

Best of the Pre-Golden Globes Parties

11 Jan

Happy Golden Globes Day! It isn’t just about the dresses (and suits) on display from the awards show as there has been a lot of pre-gaming at various events over the past few days. Here are some of our favorite looks including a whole lot of pattern from W Magazine’s Golden Globes celebration and the 2015 BAFTA LA Tea Party.

Diane Kruger MarniDiane Kruger is serving up 1960s perfection in a lilac Marni frock at the party and the leopard-print A.L.C. ‘Davenport’ clutch is the perfect addition to an already fantastic outfit.

Amy Landecker Jay DuplassJay Duplass is wearing a shirt that is stylistically in tune with his character on Transparent in this fun shot with co-star Amy Landecker at W’s Golden Globe celebration.

Tracee Ellis RossThere is something a little upholstery about Tracee Ellis Ross’ dress but this is floral perfection nonetheless. Bonus red lipstick points awarded.

Gina RodriguezMoving on to the BAFTA Tea Party and starting with Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez in a very cute and fun Guishem dress. I’m looking forward to seeing what Rodriguez will wear on the red carpet later and I will also continue to lament the fact I have still yet to watch Jane the Virgin.

Joanne FroggattYes this is a playsuit and while I have my own play/jumpsuit concerns, over the past few months I have warmed to them on others and Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt in Emilia Wickstead is another I find myself liking a whole bunch. The flash of pastel color with the clutch detracts from the slightly blah nude strappy sandals.

Moran AtiasThis is a very delightful look from Tyrant’s Moran Atias with butterflies and plaid from Temperley London at the BAFTA Tea Party.

Gillian AndersonThis reads a little more beach and cocktails than tea party mostly because I think it needs a necklace; however Gillian Anderson is still resplendent in this ensemble.

Jamie DornanAnderson’s The Fall co-star Jamie Dornan shows how to do the suit without a shirt and tie thing with aplomb. The pocket square is a nice touch and while I’m all for beardy goodness this is entering the too grizzly stages.

Eddie RedmanyeEddie Redmayne’s suit game is consistently strong (as consistent as his pose leaning which I can’t unsee since Tom and Lorenzo mentioned it) and his Alexander McQueen electric-blue suit at the BAFTA event is no different. He is definitely my most anticipated dude for his evening.

Kit Harington BAFTAAnd finally wearing something that sits in the middle of Redmayne’s suit and Dornan’s jacket/no shirt and tie is Kit Harington looking far more casual than his Testament of Youth premiere attire from last week.

Come back tomorrow for a whole lot more dress (and suit) analysis.
