The pattern theme continues much to my delight and Look of the Week is awash once again with some bold ensembles. It’s summer so this makes total sense.
Plenty of premieres, more awards and July issues of magazines continue to wow. September, you have a lot to live up to.
For some sporty and sparkly chic check out style crush Tatiana Maslany and my article on the new (and wonderful) Netflix series GLOW.At the BET Awards Issa Rae is bold stripe delight in Balmain pairing a blazer with short shorts and sandals. Everything about this look is a dream and Rae tops it off with the perfect pink lipstick.
And while we’re on the subject of Issa Rae, here is the season 2 promo poster for Insecure and the premiere date is less than a month away! Never has a poster made me want to go for a swim more than this. Excellent swimsuit choice too.
The third week in a row for Zendaya as the Spider-Man: Homecoming promo tour continues. So far there has been a stunning Vogue cover, putting a bird on it and now mixing fun and sophistication in stripes and ruffled Altuzarra.
A velvet trench doesn’t really scream the month of June, but just know I am very much coveting Karen Gillan’s Self Portrait coat dress.
This week’s florals come from Jenny Slate at the Despicable Me LA premiere in Alice McCall. The heavy print and fringe makes this dress feel a little rug-adjacent, but the slightly sheer element gives it a much lighter look. Great gold sandals too.
At the Younger season 4 premiere, Sutton Foster looks like she came straight from rom-com set in the ’80s in polka dot Saloni. This is of course a compliment of the highest order.
In ‘July gives great cover’ news; bow down to Serena Williams and Vanity Fair. After letting my subscription lapse a few months ago, VF is making a great play to get me to sign back up again with two excellent cover stories in a row.
The interview goes into detail about how Serena and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian got together and what Serena did when she found out she was pregnant just before the Australian Open kicked off. A tournament she won without dropping a single set. It is a celebration of all things Serena and I cannot wait to pick up this magazine. In just over two weeks, Game of Thrones returns so get ready for TV talk to be dominated by this juggernaut. First up a super fun Time cover story and design that mixes religious iconography with Pop Art colors and Old Hollywood; you can read all about photographer Miles Aldridge’s concept here. There’s also a little Twin Peaks and my dream to now have Nikolaj Coster-Waldau playing the prime suspect in an Agatha Christie adaptation.
Sophie Turner in Gucci (currently crushing it as the brand of the moment) is my favorite of the portraits in a shot that looks like a fucked up and fashionable fairy tale.
Also over at Vanity Fair they picked out two important details from the piece and the first one is something I cannot wait to see in the new season.Preacher is back and the first two episodes are super fun. Plus Tulip is once again a major TV style crush mixing feminine summer dresses with edgy leather. Ruth Negga has been a regular presence here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and her cover/editorial for Town & Country is another style hit including the above dreamy shot of Negga in Fendi. In the piece Negga talks about how much she loves books and her favorite show growing up was My So-Called Life.
As if I needed another reason to think we could be besties, on a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Negga talked about how much she loves Grease 2, which is also my favorite of the Grease movies. So much so that I even managed to slip a reference to it in this Wonder Woman essay I wrote for Elle.
All my fave actresses talk about Grease 2 on The Tonight Show.
While stripes always work, this summer it is all about taking it to a statement level. This summer trends are focused on pinks, off the shoulder tops, stripes, floral and much more.
