Out of the Box: Look of the Week

27 Oct

Bold pattern and color dominate this week’s “Out of the Box” rundown with stripes, florals and a variety of other fun prints. We’re in the pre movie award season gauntlet and magazines continue to celebrate the best of the year (even though it is only October).

Oh, and Stranger Things is back today, but I am sure you are probably already aware of this.

For all things Halloween TV from teen shows in the ’90s check out my round-up here. And I also interviewed 1922 costume designer Claudia Da Ponte about dressing for horror.“Women like looking sexy, but it doesn’t mean we want to fuck you.” Stitch Cate Blanchett’s words onto a cushion and I will visit your Etsy store. At the InStyle Awards, Cate Blanchett gave a blistering speech and as with last week’s Elle celebration, this is exactly the kind of thing I need to hear right now.

Blanchett was given the Style Icon Award and her striped Givenchy frock shows exactly why this was the right choice; she looks cool af posing next to Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi and he is also showing off his trademark sartorial prowess.  One of my favorite designers is Mary Katrantzou as her looks are never boring; this is once again the case at the InStyle Awards and this mixed textured frock on Lauren Cohan is serving up a heap of dramatic flair. Great lip color from the Walking Dead star too.Happy Stranger Things Day! At the premiere last night the younger teens show how to do the whole red carpet thing as they continue to embrace the fun side of fashion. From colorful pants to all the flashy accouterments; they have this thing down. Caleb McLaughlin has the perfect answer to the LA heatwave in shorts and Finn Wolfhard is giving off super ’70s vibes in a Prada turtleneck and suit.

Joined by season 2 newcomer Sadie Sink dressed in a very cute Chanel. Millie Bobby Brown’s leather Calvin Klein frock is maybe not the best idea considering the weather and it is a slightly more edgy look than her usual offerings, but it still feels age appropriate. Of course they all have stylists, but their individual personalities are still shining through. Combining two of my favorite trends—florals and ladysuits—is Kerry Washington at the 2017 GLSEN Respect Awards in Roberto Cavalli Resort 2018. This is a lot of suit to pull of and Washington does just that.

My only quibble is I wish it was hemmed slightly higher as we’re probably missing out on some fabulous shoes. Issa Rae joined CoverGirl senior vice president Ukonwa Ojo at the Fast Company Innovation Festival and both women went super colorful with their outfit choices; bold tones are not just for summer.

Ojo paired her canary yellow with leopard print pumps and Rae has gone full sequin trend in Diane von Furstenberg. It reminds me of another Issa Rae stunning outfit from 2017.Wearing all Kate Spade New York at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund show is a very fun spin on the whole preppy look and this is a sartorial path Laverne Cox doesn’t often take. It is a super cute look on her and I am definitely coveting this dress.Jenna Coleman could step right into the 1960s scenes of Outlander in this head-to-toe Burberry ensemble at the BAFTA Breakthrough Brits reception. It is also part Audrey Horne school uniform chic with a dash of ’90s with those red laced boots. A very fun segment on Late Night with Seth Meyers is “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” and the latest edition is no different.

I would also very much like to know where Amber Ruffin’s shirt is from because it is an astronomical delight. In other excellent Amber Ruffin news; she is looking to making the switch from late night to prime time and I am thrilled.Bookending this week’s “Out of the Box” with Cate Blanchett. Here she shares the cover of Australian Vogue with Thor: Ragnarok co-star Chris Hemsworth. A shot that is both moody in focus but fun in fashion and set-up. Also this new Thor is ridiculously enjoyable and had me laughing throughout. Some really fabulous costuming from Mayes C. Rubeo.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Oct

Film festival season continues and we are definitely in fall fashion territory with outerwear and lots of long sleeves. Patterns dominate and the Thor premiere was a delightful display of sartorial fun.

It is also time for the annual “Women in Hollywood” issue of Elle and in a week that has been tough when it comes to writing about this industry—because of the endless harrowing tales of sexual harassment relating to, but not just limited to Harvey Weinstein—these covers are a welcome sight.  The Thor: Ragnarok premiere was a sparkly clothes delight and Jeff Goldblum once again gave great shirt; switching pattern for a silver number to go with his silver fox vibes. Hard swoon. Tessa Thompson is being touted as the MVP of the new Thor and she was a rainbow pleats knockout at the Emmys. Here she keeps up the colorful gown theme in a glorious marigold Schiaparelli gown.Cate Blanchett looks like she is concocting a grand scheme and then is going to throw a martini in someone’s face in gold sequin Gucci. This is enough sparkle to overwhelm, but this being Cate she can and does pull it off.
The Fug Girls asked if “preppy Star Trek is a thing?” and sign me up if it is. I love the ’70s athleisure look of the new series (which I need to catch up on) and I am here for Saoirse Ronan at the On Chesil Beach LFF premiere in this Alessandra Rich dress too.Holy sophistication! Kristin Scott Thomas ticks the turtleneck and mustard coat casually slung over her shoulders boxes at the LFF premiere for The Party. Everything about this is perfect for a fall fancy event.Heritage patterns are on trend and Greta Gerwig’s Ralph Lauren Collection frock in Prince of Wales check is fit for an evening in the English country and the New York Film Festival. I’ve probably already said it numerous times, but I am so excited for Lady Bird.A T-shirt can say a lot and at Glamour’s “The Girl Project” event Yara Shahidi has an important message to deliver on the International Day of the Girl. This shirt is available from Hstry and comes in both short and long sleeve versions at a super affordable price. It also looks like the kind of shirt that could make an appearance on Insecure.I just read a profile of The Vampire’s Wife co-creator Susie Cave in British Vogue and this is a brand I am head over heels in love with. Ruth Negga, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Elisabeth Moss, January Jones and now Rachel Weisz at the New Yorker Festival have worn these super pretty frocks with signature frilled sleeves. Also at the New Yorker Festival is Tracee Ellis Ross in a fabulous floral Valentino jumpsuit. I love how much fun Ross has with fashion.

And it isn’t all big designer brands for Tracee Ellis Ross; this polka dot frock is from JCPenney and is part of Ross’ capsule line. Available from November 12 and everything is under the $75 mark. So many amazing women gracing the cover of Elle this month including one of the women of the year and a TV Ate My Wardrobe fave; Queen Laura Dern.
The icon levels are high and this Cicely Tyson cover is like a breath of fresh air because age is not and should not be a factor when a fashion magazine picks their cover stars. Take note, Vogue.

Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu Star-Studded Paris Fashion Week Shows

4 Oct

Paris Fashion Week finishes today! Marking the end of this very hectic Spring/Summer ’18 season and some of my favorite looks from those attending occurred over the last few days. Louis Vuitton has quite the set of brand ambassadors; pretty much all were there for both the runway show and the boutique opening the night before.

There’s a lot of leopard print infused in these outfits on both days and this is only adding to my desire to finally indulge in this style.

Over at Miu Miu the front row was a mix of newcomers and fashion week veterans. It feels like organizers for both shows reached into my brain and picked out some of my faves. So rather than making “Out of the Box” overstuffed, here is a rundown of the best looks from these Paris Fashion Week events.Michelle Williams has been part of the LV family since 2013 and for the Paris show she brought along bestie Busy Philipps. The trip lived up to the Busy brand and was well documented on Instagram Stories—much to my delight—including dancing to Will Smith and featuring a cameo from another TV Ate My Wardrobe regular.

Both of these outfits also look super wearable and I am particularly eyeing up Michelle’s jacket and Busy’s skirt. I also spent yesterday writing about turtlenecks and while I personally wouldn’t wear a cropped version, I am excited to see this kind of sweater doing the rounds.

Find yourself a BFF that looks at you the way Michelle looks at Busy.

And there are some fabulous accompanying Insta photos, which unlike Stories, stick around for more than 24 hours. Louis Vuitton, you really should.

All of me.

This is also amazing. After the very low turnout at Dior—where were all their ambassadors?—Louis Vuitton did not have this problem. A front row of Oscar winners and nominees. More coats to covet and Ruth Negga at the Louis Vuitton opening is everything goals. She’s even making the white boots work. Another lipstick brand/color to add to the forever list of cosmetics I am on the hunt for.Pattern clashing at its best and Alicia Vikander is looking the most ’90s. Now these are the LV boots I would like to stomp about in this winter.Maggie Gyllenhaal continues to do amazing things on The Deuce and on the sartorial front; giving off ’50s elegance vibes at Miu Miu with a dash of ’70s style platforms. I want her to star in screwball comedy after seeing this outfit. Or a sequel to The Secretary. It is a cliché to use the word chic when someone is in Paris, but Naomie Harris is chic af here. It is really nice to see Elle Fanning in something non-pastel and floaty; this jumpsuit didn’t picture so well while sitting down, but looks great here. More platforms from Miu Miu for Dakota and this color is stunning on her. I feel very protective toward Julia Garner and no doubt this is because of the character she plays on The Americans. I also really like how fashiony she is (as well as being a terrific actress) and Miu Miu feels like entirely the right brand for her style. This is slightly edgy, but with a playful side.Clemence Posey is another regular Fashion Week attendee and this sweater/skirt pairing is what I want to wear to the office. If I worked in an office. After starring in the highest-grossing horror movie of all time, It star Sophia Lillis continues her cute as hell fashion domination. Sparkly collar and kitten print are delightful. As is this cat number from Miu Miu’s online store. Gonna go get lost in this pattern dream of a RTW collection.

2017 SDCC Panel, Party and Interview Style Highlights

23 Jul

A very busy weekend for both TV and film at SDCC with lots of new trailers to click on (including the Stranger Things, which you can watch below) and plenty of panel fashion delights.

As I mentioned on Friday, the kind of outfits chosen for Comic-Con are right in my style wheelhouse. And this year did not disappoint. The Game of Thrones panel traditionally reveals very little, but where it lacked in new news it made up for with my favorite kind of outfit; yes the ladysuit.

The first glimpse I had of Sophie Turner in this amazing plaid number was an out loud scream moment. And it is still is.
And Gwendoline Christie is working another amazing oversized suit in pale blue Bella Freud. More menswear inspired looks and Cate Blanchett works a different kind of plaid in Monse, with the level of sartorial cool you would expect from this style icon. A red racing stripe and gold shoes really top this off.

Plus for the best in Cate Blanchett and Harry Styles check out the best thread on Twitter. Switching gears from ladysuits to fabulous frocks and jumpsuits that deliver on an explosion of color, print and texture at the Marvel panel.

Lupita’s Elie Saab Resort has me longing for a cocktail (good job I’m going out for brunch soon) and Danai Gurira is working the very on trend plaid with a twist. Letitia Wright is keeping things simple in white sneakers and a white frock; I cannot wait for this press tour. Also at Marvel yesterday; so much style yes from Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi. This is how you do it.
Style Queen Ruth Negga and constant TV Ate My Wardrobe presence looks cool as fuck on the IMDb yacht in a beautiful dress by The Vampire’s Wife. And I now want everything by this brand. As the Fug Girls like to say, everyone looks hotter in sunglasses and the Preacher cast live up to these accessory related words of wisdom. This is a show that gives great shades and style; season 2 has been a lot of fun so far and it is one of my favorite things on at the moment.

Working that strong collar is Naomi Watts, ticking another one of my big sartorial boxes and this is a very fun photo with Kyle MacLachlan.

Watts has been crushing the Insta game of late and also gave a different kind of insight into the mind of David Lynch through text convo revelations.I’m looking forward to seeing these three team up in The Defenders and while I’m not in love with Mike Colter’s hat, he gets a pass as sometimes bad hats happen to good people.

Krysten Ritter has also been giving great Insta and from this alone I’ve decided I now ship Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones. Oh, hi Charlie Cox.In actors I adore news; here is Judy Greer and Corey Stoll at the Entertainment Weekly and FX After Dark party. Greer is vision in gingham and also a really great addition to Casual this season. The Stranger Things kids always look like they have the most energy and there’s a lot of great patterns here (including newcomer Sadie Sink’s floral frock).

And while I do have Stranger Things fatigue because it has got quite exhausting talking about this show, they have delivered a really intriguing trailer.

And again the nostalgic elements of growing up in this period have been captured. Of course I will be watching and writing about it come October. More florals and Stranger Things from Natalia Dyer in a super cute red poppy number.

More Miu Miu delights for Karen Gillan and some super stacked platforms. And a good place to end.

Best of the 2016 Gotham Independent Film Awards

29 Nov

Award season is in full swing and last night the 2016 Gotham Independent Film Awards were held in New York and the list of attendees/winners are among some of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s faves. Here are the best looks from the night.

For a full list of winners head here.

judith-light-gotham-awardsJudith Light received a Made in NY Appreciation Award and we should all appreciate Judith Light; especially this magnificent giving none of the fucks posing. Great outfit too.krysten-ritterKrysten Ritter is going full drama in a Cushnie Et Ochs caped number paired with fabulous Nicholas Kirkwood heels. A bold red lip is the perfect finishing touch to this look.

And look who she was hanging out with at the event. All the swoons.cate-blanchett-and-amy-adamsSpeaking of swoons; Amy Adams is serving up a super hot ladysuit treat in Max Mara after receiving the career tribute honor from fellow award show royalty Cate Blanchett.

Blanchett is also crushing it in a super interesting ladysuit choice and her Christopher Kane ensemble is as bold as it is wonderful; the top looks like something you might hang on your wall.emily-mortimer-and-amy-adamsMore from Amy Adams as she poses it up a storm with the always delightful Emily Mortimer.naomie-harrisThe dress and pants combo is one I have complicated feelings about mostly because it reminds me of 1999, but Naomie Harris is pulling off this sequin split as the cast of Moonlight took home the ensemble award and the film picked up Best Feature and Best Screenplay. keegan-michael-keyA very dapper Keegan-Michael Key was on hand to host the event.winona-and-ethanPretty much a solid representation of 90s nostalgic feelings in 2016 picture form. Krysten Ritter agrees.

Best of the 2016 Tony Awards Red Carpet Part 2

13 Jun

More from the 2016 Tony Awards red carpet and we’ve got dramatic satin ensembles, some dresses I keep changing my mind about and an excellent assist from the wind on the posing stakes.

For more check out Part 1Danai GuriraDanai Gurira is a TV Ate My Wardrobe regular and she did not disappoint in bold yellow Rosie Assoulin.Danielle BrooksSatin is tricksy because creases, but Danielle Brooks slays in Derek Lam and I just remembered that OITNB is back this week! Claire DanesMore midnight blue and a Narciso Rodriguez dress that is very 90s; throw on a plaid shirt and Claire Danes is more than halfway to Angela Chase.Phillipa SooThe windy evening gives Hamilton star Phillipa Soo an extra dramatic walking and posing boost in a Prabal Gurung frock which is just the right side of bridal. Mixing textures is definitely a big look of the night.Sara BareillesFrom bridal to bridesmaid, which sounds like it isn’t a good thing; however I think Sara Bareilles looks fantastic in an ethereal Gomez Gracia frock with a metallic bodice. Waitress is on the list of things I want to see on my New York trip in the fall. You can watch the cast performance here.Jane KrakowskiEntering the red zone with Jane Krakowski in custom Michael Kors and another triumph on the texture front with a hint of sparkle.Keri RussellI’ve gone back and forth so many times on Keri Russell’s Monique Lhuillier crimson dress and I’ve come to the very surprising conclusion that it would work better as a jumpsuit (something I have never said before).

Front split dresses always looks somewhat awkward to me, but they were one of the style repeats from this red carpet (see also Michelle Williams). Russell only gave birth last month and she looks amazing regardless of my slight issues with the dress style. Plus, bonus red lipstick points.Rose Byrne and Bobby CannavaleFave couple alert and Rose Byrne is also doing the front split thing in red sequin Thakoon. Bobby Cannavale wears a silver ribbon (as did many others) as a way to acknowledge the Pulse shooting victims and the show also opened with a tribute to the gay club victims of this still hard to fathom extreme act of violence. Cate BlanchettAnother dress I found myself going back and forth on and I suspect that Cate Blanchett’s inherent ability to make anything work is why I am drawn to her in this patchwork Louis Vuitton frock. Blanchett also wears a silver ribbon as a show of support to the Pulse victims.

Best of the 2016 Oscars Red Carpet: Black, White and Block Color

29 Feb

Welcome to more Oscar red carpet highlights and part 2 is all about classic black frocks with a twist and we’ve got leather, cute couples, Darth Vader socks and more.

For part 1 of our red carpet rundown head here.Jennifer GarnerA big weekend for Jennifer Garner and after that killer Vanity Fair profile (which I have definitely read more than once) she made a fabulous dress choice with Atelier Versace that reads “Don’t worry about me, I’m fine (and not in a way where I’m not actually fine).”

I have a lot of love for Garner and all I want is for a TV project to come along that is worthy of her talents and if she gets to use some of her Sydney Bristow skills then I am down for that.Julianne MooreJulianne Moore wears the ideal presenting gown in Chanel; simple and stunning. I think I might actually like it better than the Chanel she wore last year when she won.Mark RuffaloThe couple that wears Valentino together stays together. Mark Ruffalo’s custom tuxedo has him standing out in blue and wife Sunrise Coigney’s Valentino Couture gown is the magical sheer unicorn in that I actually really like.Michael Sheen and Sarah SilvermanI don’t have a whole lot to say about their outfits as they’ve both gone for solid classic looks, but I just really like them as a couple so here are Sarah Silverman and Michael Sheen in their fancy threads. Kerry WashingtonA dress that looks better in motion and I am so here for a bit of leather on the Oscar red carpet; the bodice of Kerry Washington’s Versace frock is giving off great edge. My one issue is the giant slit and the Jolie posing as it really detracts from the rest of the gown. Washington is someone you can count on to pull out the big guns at an event like this and I can’t fault her bold choices when the overall outlook of the general red carpet is a little on the underwhelming side.Mindy KalingAnother dress with a caveat as Mindy Kaling’s Elizabeth Kennedy served up all the drama from the back and fell a bit flat from the front. This bow train is everything as are Kaling’s super stacked heels. That is a lot of inches.Brie LarsonAs with Alicia Vikander, Brie Larson was on the highly anticipated list and while there is a lot to love about this Gucci gown it doesn’t quite have the impact of her Golden Globes gold Calvin Klein or the Chanel she wore to the Independent Spirit Awards.

The color is fantastic and the combination of ruffles/pleats is definitely working for me, but it is lacking something. Regardless I am very happy Brie won and she delivered another fantastic speech.Cate BlanchettMy favorite thing about Cate Blanchett on the red carpet is you never know what you’re going to get, but you know it will be amazing. Amazing it is with Blanchett going fairy tale this year in floral Armani Privé.Tina FeyIn the battle of the strapless purple gowns Tina Fey is triumphant in Atelier Versace over Reese Witherspoon’s Oscar de la Renta similar choice. I guess it’s kinda awkward when something like this happens, but I also think this is a Tina Fey Top 5 red carpet moment.Rachel McAdamsAnother in the category of dresses that look better from a different angle and Rachel McAdams suffered in the crease department. However I love this shot which captures the drama of the emerald green August Getty Atelier dress.Jacob TremblayEnding things with the little dude of the hour and the suit is custom Armani, but it is the Darth Vader socks that are the most important accessory here.

Best of the 2016 Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet: The Ladies

28 Feb

Happy Oscars Day! What better way to kick off this red carpet extravaganza than with a rundown of the many amazing looks from one of the highlights in this super stacked award season.

The Independent Spirit Awards take place in a marquee on the beach in Santa Monica and so it has a very different vibe to what we will be seeing later today. Bold color and print reign supreme with a more chilled out aesthetic; here are our favorite looks from the ladies yesterday.Brie LarsonBrie Larson has been crushing it all year and this intricately beaded Chanel number is a contender for ultimate best (with her Golden Globes dress as a close second). Another win for Larson – her speech is definitely worth a watch – and it is likely that she will be adding another to her awards shelf this evening. As I mentioned on Friday, Larson is on my highly anticipated Oscar dress list.Cate BlanchettThird year in a row for Cate Blanchett at the Independent Spirit Awards (nominee in 2014 and presenter in 2015) and another triumphant frock choice. The Spring ’16 Gucci collection is pretty much the perfect for Blanchett and this event and as with Larson I cannot wait to see what she will be wearing tonight.Nicki ReedA strong 1970s influence for Nikki Reed’s Etro gown and the color/pattern mix is the kind of bathroom decor I dream of (this is a good thing I promise). Bonus points for the relaxed fishtail braid.Cynthia NixonAnother print delight and supporting actress nominee Cynthia Nixon has got the whole fancy daytime event at the beach thing down.Emilia ClarkeAt the recent Michael Kors Collection Fall 16 RTW show there was a whole lot of amazing collars on display and this dress is one I had saved in my “things I would definitely wear” folder (yes I have one of those). While I would stick with it buttoned up (as it was on the runway) the cuffs are much better this way and Emilia Clarke looks great. Excellent bag choice too.Mya TaylorMya Taylor made history by becoming the first transgender actress to win an Independent Spirit Award (or any major film awards) and her speech is an essential watch. Another fantastic dress which is giving me all the 1970s feelings and a sparkly patterned delight.Rachel McAdamsRachel McAdams has stepped up her red carpet game this awards season and this Solace London ensemble is equal parts grand and simple. Minimal makeup and fuss free hair adds to the chilled out vibe as this dress could be overwhelming at an event like this if the overall styling was different. Kate McKinnonIndependent Spirit Awards co-host Kate McKinnon sounds the #LadySuitWatch2016 klaxon and looks spectacular. Thanks to this one scene Carol parody I now want to see Kate McKinnon in a feature length version.Rooney Mara sunglassesGoing a little Gatsby with her sunglasses choice and Rooney Mara looking all kinds of relaxed out in the sun while wearing the most Rooney Mara dress in Hugo Boss. Rooney and CateA change in glasses and I think I just found my new Twitter cover photo.

Stay tuned as we’ve got dudes in suits and couples coming up next!

The 18th Costume Designers Guild Awards

24 Feb

Costume design took center stage last night at the 18th Costume Designers Guild Awards. A celebration that is TV Ate My Wardrobe award season high point as it showcases the incredible talent that has such a big influence on us here.

Film, TV and short-form are all included with period, contemporary and fantasy getting their own TV and film categories (this is the first year in which television has a fantasy option rather than the mini-series/TV one). Plenty of stars were in attendance both in a presenting capacity and to support the costume designers they have worked with and Besty Brandt was the evening’s host.

For the third year in a row Mindy Kaling wore a gown designed by The Mindy Project costume designer and Designers Guild president Salvador Perez; once again it is a look which shows how well Perez knows Kaling’s body and embraces her incredible figure. It is something he has done time and time again on The Mindy Project and of course it is bold in the color choice.Mindy KalingWinners included Michele Clapton taking home the first fantasy television award after winning for Game of Thrones last year when fantasy shared a category with period. Lou Eyrich also won two years in a row for American Horror Story despite a change of category (going from mini-series/TV movie to contemporary) and she can be seen in an incredible black ensemble with Beasts of No Nation winner Jenny Eagan below. Eagan won for True Detective in the contemporary category last year (and was also nominated for Olive Kitteridge).Lou Eyrich and Jenny EaganNon-costume designer special achievements were given to Quentin Tarantino who received the Distinguished Collaborator Award and Cate Blanchett was honored with the Lacoste Spotlight Award. Blanchett is in both films that Sandy Powell is nominated for this year (Carol, Cinderella) and she did not disappoint in her choice of custom Versace with a very impressive Tiffany necklace. Powell also looks fabulous with added mirrored and sparkle details.Cate Blanchett and Sandy PowellIn Blanchett’s speech she acknowledged the importance of working with costume designers saying “Everyone talks about their relationship with the other actors and the director, and of course those are important. But in the end, it’s in those costume fittings; those silent moments away from the rush, where you make manifest the psychological things you talk about in the rehearsal room. It’s the building blocks of a character.”

The Distinguished Service Award was given to master dyer Edwina Pellikka and The Knick’s Ellen Mirojnick not only won for The Knick this year, but she was also the recipient of the Career Achievement Award.Ellen MirojnickMirojnick’s work has spanned over 30 years and projects include many iconic costume moments such as Glenn Close rocking a lot of white in Fatal Attraction, all of those Wall Street suits, the Sharon Stone interview in Basic Instinct, recreating Charlie Chaplin’s famous look in Chaplin, Keanu Reeves in a white tee in Speed and so many flamboyant looks in the recent Behind the Candelabra. Some of Mirojnick’s pieces were on display as part of the stage decoration including Liberace’s incredible (and super heavy) fur coat that Michael Douglas wore in Behind the Candelabra and John Thackery’s signature white shoes from The Knick.Costume Designers Guild AwardsCostume Designers Guild Awards 2016Here is the full list of nominees and the winners have been highlighted.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

19 Feb

A mostly New York Fashion week edition of “Out of the Box” with plenty of famous faces flocking to runway shows to find out what they will be wearing come the next red carpet cycle/in their regular lives – they can probably afford the price tags.

This was going to be an all NYFW offering, but as I didn’t cover the BAFTAs (for other work/travel reasons) I wanted to include a couple of dresses from this event which wowed me.Diane Kruger, Jamie King, Jennifer HudsonIt’s New York in February and temperatures are on the chilly side so a coat casually slung over the shoulders is always a good choice and both Diane Kruger and Jennifer Hudson have opted for this at Jason Wu. If this was me I would definitely struggle with keeping it straight on my shoulders (you should see my oh so wonky gown graduation pictures). This is a fun blend of looks with Jennifer Hudson wearing the very on trend leather, Diane looking cool in cornflower blue and Jamie King rounding out the picture in a dress ideal for a weekend away in the country at Downton Abbey type venue.Claire DanesA beautiful and simple shot of Claire Danes watching the Narciso Rodriguez runway show on Tuesday. Kiernan Shipka, Amadla Stenberg, Marc JacobsThe Marc Jacobs presentation was packed last night and whenever I see a front row like this I just assume that this is the first time most of them are meeting each other. Not the case with our favorite teen BFFs Amandla Stenberg and Kiernan Shipka. Andra Day’s movie themed ensemble is super fun and that’s a whole lot of excellent bold lip colors from Day, Ashley Benson and Odeya Rush.  Amandla StenbergA clearer look at Amandla Stenberg’s fabulous Marc Jacobs ‘Scream Queens‘ skirt – Olivia Wilde wore the dress version recently – and pairing it with sneakers adds to the laid back vibe.Natasha Lyonne and Christina RicciWhile Stenberg’s gone for sneakers (a woman after my own flats loving heart) there are a lot of stacked platforms on display and I’m maybe coveting Christina Ricci’s ‘Edie Mary Jane‘ patent delights. There’s also something a little Wednesday Addams about her whole outfit and I’m so here for Natasha Lyonne’s bold red (pleather?) skirt.Juliet LewisJuliette Lewis looking like the coolest golfer that ever lived at Marc Jacobs. The pants maybe need a little hemming, but as someone who couldn’t see their shoes for the first half of the aughts I am also fine with this.Zosia Mamet - Marc JacobsSee the above comment about the pants and ribbons/ascots/scarves are really making a big swing for Fall 2016 with Zosia Mamet also working prints at Marc Jacobs. Ellie, Zosia, FriedaMore Zosia at the Kate Spade New York presentation – we picked out some outfits for Shoshanna in our Kate Spade Fantasy Costuming piece – and more excellent patterned attire. Posing with Ellie Kemper and Freida Pinto the trio stuck to the monochrome department rather than going for the bright Kate Spade color palette. Zoe Kazan Kate SpadeAdding a splash of color in a super pretty floral ensemble is Zoe Kazan proving that black tights can be worn with something this summer looking. It is still February after all.Zoe KazanMore Zoe Kazan and the Jill Stuart frock she gave a sneak peek look at on Instagram and I feel like I have very similar clothing taste to Kazan; this is right in my dress wheelhouse. And tights. I love tights.Naomie Harris - Michael KorsNaomie Harris was a knockout during the Spectre press tour last year and once again she is killing it at the Michael Kors Collection show in Michael Kors. Pink pumps add a touch of flair to this floral delight.Taraji P. Henson and Zoe KravitzWhile I still haven’t come up with a suitable term to describe something more than #SquadGoals here is the non-selfie version of Taraji P. Henson and Zoe Kravitz on the front row at Alexander Wang still looking super cool. Henson looked stunning in Alexander Wang at the recent Golden Globes and this is brand which suits her style well while avoiding any Cookie comparisons.Julia GarnerAlso at Alexander Wang – Julia Garner somehow looking cute and edgy all at once in leather. No word if she will be back for season 4 of The Americans but no doubt if she is then expect plenty of heartbreak.Alicia VikanderMore leather and Alicia Vikander’s BAFTA Louis Vuitton frock is a weighty 35 lbs. The last three big events has seen Vikander wearing a variety of looks from the brand she models for and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for her a week on Sunday. It’s weird to think award season is almost at an end.Cate BlanchettCate Blanchett also cranks it up a gear for the BAFTAs in a stunning Alexander McQueen dress of two halves and each one is just as spectacular as the other.
